Machiavelli And The Apology Of The Prince
Machiavelli writes The Prince centuries after Plato documents Socrates in Crito and The Apology.
Despite the different time periods, both Machiavelli and Socrates experience times of turmoil where
the concept of democracy was questioned. However, the different time periods cause the views and
purposes of Machiavelli s writing to largely differ from Socrates. Machiavelli writes in a time of
turmoil where Italy was a bunch of small, fragmented states and when the Medici s struggled to regain
power after being expelled. This causes his views to be more cynical and pessimistic in comparison to
Socrates. If Socrates were to read The Prince, he would disagree with Machiavelli s beliefs and deem
his portrayal of a prince as immoral. Their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Socrates contradicting views are presented when he claims, Not from money does virtue come, but
from virtue comes money and all of the other good things for human beings both privately and
publicly (Apology, 30b). Socrates disputes that fortuna comes from virtue and presents a cause and
effect relationship, contrary to the interconnected relationship as presented by Machiavelli. A prince
should use philosophical thinking to question and explore many ideas in order to amass success. Just
having money and luck, on the other hand, will not lead to more success because the prince is unable
to think about how he can execute his rulings. Through his views, he connotes how the ruler cannot
start his reign with both fortuna and virtue. This contradicts with Machiavelli s prince because
Socrates disputes the lack of emphasis on fortune.
However, it is plausible to argue that fortuna does not lead to success as seen in Socrates legacy.
Socrates legacy is evidence that virtue is the more valuable of the two and the unnecessity of fortuna.
Even if Socrates was a poor man, who has found his own philosophy in life, he is a heavily respected
figure today. He turned down Crito s fortune and power, and died as a martyr , leading to an increased
remembrance of his philosophy. His legacy has lasted thousands of years without fortuna. Although
Socrates was not a ruler, he is one of the fathers of democracy, so he is a figure that is

Terrorism is a Means of Serving Political Goals
While terrorism that is, violence or the threat of violence aimed intentionally at civilians has been
employed since time immemorial as a means of securing political goals, the 1960s ushered in an
entirely new form of political violence. Motivated by thinkers like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels,
this new breed of terrorism struggled in vain to halt the vehicle of Capitalism: as it was steered by the
opulent and sustained through exploitation of a bloodied working class. Significant amongst
likeminded New Left groups was the Weather Underground Organization (WUO), which conducted a
series of bombings in protest against perceived American injustice. This expression of hostility by
student activists, albeit far from a true revolutionary movement, stands out as one of the only so called
terrorist movements to consistently attack and antagonize on American soil. Although officially
formed in 1969, the writings had been on the wall since before 1959 and indicators of the Weather
Underground s impending conception were prevalent throughout the previous decade which had
served as the perfect mixing pot for cooking up a domestic terrorist cell. At that time, almost half of
the American population was under the age of eighteen. And the dawn of this period saw the
formation of WUO s precursor organization, Students for a Democratic Society, whose youthful
membership was eager to make a difference in an era defined by turbulence, prejudice, and bloodshed.

The Characters Of Harry Potter
The Harry Potter book series has sold over 450 million copies and is currently translated into almost
every language on the face of the earth ( Harry Potter ). Millions have faithfully followed the story
about this magical world and have fallen in love with the many enchanting characters. What most
readers do not recognize is the prominence that classical Greek/Roman mythological allusions play in
the beloved roles in Harry Potter through their names and personality attributes. The importance of
names is extremely significant to a person s identity, especially in literature where words are meant to
bring stories to life. Rowling continues this concept through her characters by linking her characters
names to classical folklore charismas that share similar personas. Rowling does a fantastic job with
cleverly connecting her characters to classical Greek/Roman mythological figures through the
etymology of their names and similar personality traits to their wizard counterparts, such as Professor
McGonagall and Filch. An apparent allusion to a classical mythological figure is the Hogwarts
transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall. Professor McGonagall is an extremely intelligent
woman, which is seen because she is tenured teacher who is respected by both her students and fellow
professors. She is also known as an excellent strategist in wizard duels, which can be seen clearly in
Rowling s last installment when McGonagall duels and defeats Snape when he is in search of Harry

Carlos Erikson s Theory Of Psychosocial Development
Presenting the Case
Carlos Sanchez is a 15 year old Puerto Rican male. He presents to my office today for a visit after a
referral from his school counselor. Mr. Sanchez s performance at school has been declining post a
fight in which he was involved in at school. According to the school, four White students engaged Mr.
Sanchez in a physical altercation, during which racial slurs were used. Mr. Sanchez s mother reports
behavioral changes; including loss of appetite, lack of sleep, physical decline, isolation, jumpiness,
and stress after the fight.
Theoretical Framework
Psychosocial Theory
Erik Erikson believed that the social environment plays an important role in personality development,
and thus he developed the theory of psychosocial development. Erikson believed that that personality
development occurs throughout our lifespan, and highlighted the influence of family system, society,
and culture in our development. Erikson accepted Freud s basic psychosexual framework and he
expanded on the development at each stage and expanded the stages to cover the lifespan. Erikson
believed that at each stage we gain attitudes and skills that make us active and contributing members
of society.
Per Erikson, our ego identity is constantly changing due to new experiences and information that we
acquire throughout our daily interactions with others. In addition to ego identity, Erikson also believed
that a sense of competence also motivates behaviors and actions, and that each

Samuel Taylor Coleridge Research Paper
Samuel Taylor Coleridge helped revolutionize literature and, along with William Wordsworth,
spearheaded the Romantic period in england. A world renowned Poet and Philosopher, Coleridge
achieved many great things during his lifetime, but he was no stranger to hardship. Living with
chronic pain, he was prescribed opium multiple times in his youth. It soon turned to recreational use
and, eventually, addiction. a habit formed early...and one to which he resorted for the rest of his life
(Bansal). In many ways opium was both a stimulant and a destructive influence on coleridge. A

The next few years were the most miserable in his life (World). He fell in love with Sara Hutchison,
the sister of wordsworth s wife to be (World) and saw her for some time but, because he was still
married, the affair was put to an end. As a result, Coleridge became terribly depressed. At this time he
was also feeling Life stifling fear (L32) and soul stifling shame (L32) as stated in his poem The pains
of sleep . These emotions stemmed from how little was understood about addiction in his time. Now,
we know that it s a physical dependency on the substance that causes addiction; back then it was just
seen as weak willed when you couldn t give something up, it was a character flaw. The poem is
conversational and is written in 3 stanzas. Each describes one night of sleep, and each is darker than
the last. The first stanza paints a truly beautiful picture of a soul in perfect harmony with his
surroundings. He feels weak, yet not unblessed (L11) because he recognises eternal strength and
wisdom (L13) are all around him. The Second stanza speaks of a much rougher night. He wakes in the
night plagued by an intolerable wrong , showing the anxiety and self loathing Coleridge must have
been feeling. The

Compare And Contrast The Renaissance Art And Paintings
When looking at the paintings that were created throughout the Renaissance art period, there are
multiple paintings that depict religious stories. The best of these paintings has Jesus depicted within
them. The majority of these paintings were created by those who had a large impact on the art world
today. One of the most famous paintings that reveals religion within it is The Last Supper by Leonardo
da Vinci, which is similarly to The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese. When analyzing these two
pieces of artwork, they are often confused for the other due to the fact that they are both based on
biblical stories as well as how they are organized. There have been multiple discussions about which
painting has more impact based on their physical effect. Based on the color and imagery depicted in
the painting, The Wedding at Cana, it is one of the most influential and inspiring stories ever told in a
religious painting.
The painting, The Wedding at Cana, was created in the year 1563 which was a mixed time between
two art periods. This was during the end of the Renaissance art period and right in the middle of the
Mannerism art period. The Renaissance was the most famous art period in which some of the most
influential pieces of work were created. The Renaissance is the time when artists were coming out of
the middle ages and were able to put more creativity within their art work. Cultures had mixed with
one another and this was shown in the work that was produced by the

Liberation Theology Essay
Introduction According to Enns (2008), liberation theology attempts to infer the holy writ through the
plight of the poor. This movement originated from South America in the early 1950s when Marxism
was the most popular theory among the poor. It was a response to the ill treatment and poverty facing
the ordinary people. It dealt with the issue of distribution of wealth among people in order to upgrade
the economic status in life. This movement had strong Romanian Catholic roots bolstered in Colombia
in 1968 at a conference where, the bishops proposed a merger between the Karl Marx teachings with
those of Jesus Christ. Liberation theology support was immense but various critiques across the
religious framework (Novak, 1991). This movement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, emergence of negative results due to black liberation was evident. This is because the theory
tends to separate the black and white Christian communities thus enhancing racism which is not
religious or biblical. By critically analysing the biblical way of life, a level of unity among the people
who share the same doctrine of Christ is expected. Black Liberation Theology initially intended to
assist the black community, but in reality it ended up hurting the more. It promoted negative values for
instance: racial tension, victimization, and Marxism ultimately leading to more oppression. Latin
American Liberation Theology The liberation theory originally developed from ideologies and
activities instigated by the Catholic missionaries in the colonial Latin America. Latin American
Liberation Theology says that there is oppression and exploitation of poor people by the rich capitalist
nations. The Latin people developed the theology by radical interpretation of the bible biased to the
people. The inclusion of armed pastors was one of the characteristics that brought this movement in
the limelight. This yearning for change got spurred by armed revolution. This is why; so many
churches had people carrying guns and other weapons to shoe how they were fighting for their
liberation. Critique of the Latin American Liberation Theology Latin American Liberation Theology is
one of the theologies that had a lot of impact on the

Literature Is At The Heart Of The Australia English...
Assignment 1A: Essay
Literature is at the heart of the Australia English Curriculum and is integral to the teaching of language
and literacy. Discuss how the children s literature can be used to develop an understanding of the
components of the language?
Children s literature has existed for as long as there have been stories to be told to children. Stories,
books, songs, poems are all made for children. Children s literature does not have a definite definition
of what it is; basically, it is anything a child reads (Lerer, 2008). Children begin to learn what reading
and writing are used for before even knowing how the system works. Children recognise the function
of written language by seeing examples of written language that are being used around them. Many
children know the difference between reading and talking, they are aware that written language is used
to do things in this world (Emitt, Zbaracki, Komesaroff and Pollock, 2015). Quintilian, John Locke,
Saint Augustine and Doctor Seuss speculated on the ways children learn the Australian language and
learn about their lives from literature (Lerer, 2008). In fact, Lerer states that the history of children s
literature is inseparable from the history of childhood, for the child was made through texts and tales
he/she studied, heard and told back, (2008, p.1). Children s literature nurtures an understanding of
narrative structures and visual images played in storytelling, this helps develop

Bronchogenic Cysts Research Paper
INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are formed due to abnormal budding of bronchial tree. They
are lined by respiratory epithelium. They are not air filled as they do not commonly communicate with
the bronchial tree. They are filled with fluid containing proteins, blood products and calcium oxalate.
One third are located in the lung parenchyma and two third are located in the mediastinum. 40 to 50%
of all congenital cysts in the thorax are bronchogenic cysts. On CT scans they appear as round mass
with attenuation similar to soft tissue or water.
Symptoms arise only when the cyst compresses surrounding structures. Most cysts are asymptomatic.

The age of the patient, non‑smoker status, absence of emphysema or abnormality suggesting a
previous tuberculosis insult lessens the possibility of a bulla. Cystic bronchiectasis is unlikely
considering the solitary nature, lower lobe location and lack of recurrent lung infections.
Treatment for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients is surgical resection. Surgical resection is
the treatment of choice in all patients including those who are asymptomatic considering the risk of
recurrent infections. If CCAM is detected antenatally or at birth, surgical resection is done between 1
and 6 months of age as the scope for compensatory lung growth after resection is much better in
infants compared to adults.
The standard therapy has been a posterolateral thoracotomy or median sternotomy with
intrapulmonary cysts requiring segmental or lobar resection.

What is President Kennedy s U.S. balance of payment problem?
In the 1960s, the United States was experiencing the balance of payment problem when its trade
balance was in a substantial deficit, the US dollar was under an attack and a massive amount of gold
flew out of its official reserve. Such issues in the balance of payment if exist for a long time can be a
threat to the whole economy because balance of payment closely interacts with key macroeconomic
variables such as GDP, exchange rates, interest rates and inflation rates. However, it was not an easy
task for the Kennedy government to solve the balance of payment problem as ... Show more content

The third option to solve balance of payment problem was to impose trade barriers and capital control.
On one hand, this would help to restrict import and capital outflow, thereby recover the trade deficit.
On the other hand, this policy was contrary to U.S. effort to liberalize the world trade. Economic
growth of the U.S and its allies would also be affected.
All three options directly address problem of the current accounts and financial and capital accounts.
While deflation and capital control can remedy both current account and financial and capital
accounts, devaluation only has immediate impacts on the current account. (Figure 1 bellow illustrates
direct impacts of each option to these accounts.) However, as exchange rates, interest rates, economic
growth and balance of payments are interacted, when one components of the balance of payment
improves, the other accounts will also recover. For example, when import demand increases, demand
for the dollar also increases, and therefore can prevent the outflow of gold from official reserve. That
being said, all three options can solve U.S balance of payment problem; however, there must be cost
incurred that Kennedy government have to consider.

Can any lesson be drawn from President Kennedy s balance of payment problem in the 1960s to

The Role Of Corruption In The Big Sleep
In The Big Sleep, author Raymond Chandler sets the scene in 1930 s America; a dark, dirty place
teeming with immorality and crime. The very thing the country blossomed from leads to its corruption
and decay: the American Dream. The Dream thrives on the thirst for money, drawing in people that
want bigger and better opportunities. By choosing Los Angeles as his setting, Chandler shows how the
last area of the States developed, the West, turned into a greedy place. Some of the most corrupt and
fame hungry people flock to Los Angeles. He also uses the time period itself because it takes place
immediately after the First World War and during the era of the Great Depression, which left lives in
shambles and people in despair. Some sank to new depths morally in order to stay afloat, which
Chandler portrays through the other characters in the story. Money motivates or corrupts nearly every
character in the novel. General Sternwood lives up on a hill, literally and figuratively, and his
immense wealth comes from the oilfields below, making it dirty in almost all senses of the word.

expenses, he receives small wages because he wishes to avoid becoming corrupted by wealth. He

motivates him to pursue the case of the missing Rusty Regan. Still, Marlowe has a few faults; drinking
excessively, treating others callously, and not reporting illegal activity to law enforcement make him
far from flawless. Chandler purposefully writes Marlowe as an imperfect but inherently good

New Journalism
Is New Journalism a literary genre? Analyse with reference to the literary techniques used in two
examples of New Journalism.
Word Count 2231
I suppose the most common sense point at which to start is by defining New Journalism, or Literary
Journalism, as Eisenhuth and McDonald (2007, p. 38) say it is called at the upper end of the spectrum.
The Collins Concise Dictionary (1999, p. 995) defines New Journalism as a style of journalism, using
techniques borrowed from fiction to portray a situation of event as vividly as possible.
Wikipedia (2010) defines it as a style of 1960s and 1970s news writing and journalism that used
literary techniques deemed unconventional at the time.
The meaning of New Journalism has evolved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interestingly, Capote, along with Mailer and many other authors, never agreed to their style s
comparisons to Wolfe s school of narration. Much to the contrary, many of these writers would deny
that their work was generically relevant to other new Journalists at the time.
In a 1966 Atlantic article, Dan Wakefield said that the non fiction work of Capote elevated reporting to
the level of literature. Although praising the work of Capote, this goes some way in saying that
literature is better than journalism. This is evidence for what Capote said his critics felt: Combining
literature and journalism is little more than a literary solution for fatigued novelists. (Plimpton, 1967,
p. 16)
Newfield (1967, p. 20) said that, This new genre defines itself by claiming many of the techniques that
were once the unchallenged terrain of the novelist: tension, symbol, cadence, irony, prosody,
imagination.
Gay Talese s 1966 article for Esquire magazine, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was a very influential piece
of New Journalism that gave a very detailed portrait of Frank Sinatra, without ever having interviewed
him.
Talese undertook huge amounts of research, as did many of the New journalists, including Capote
with In Cold Blood. Unlike Capote, Talese did not invent facts of characters. His article is, therefore,
an example of New Journalism that falls under the category of a journalistic genre, as opposed to a

Personal Branding In The Workplace
Before you can learn much about how to use personal branding for a competitive edge, it s important
to have an understanding of what personal branding is. Fortunately, it s possible to take a look at the
way many successful people have used personal branding to get a feel for what it is and how it can
work for you.
Personal branding is something that has been done by a number of well known people. Some of the
most well known among them are:
* Oprah Winfrey. Think what you will about Oprah s personality, but from the time that she branded
her show with her own name and aired a number of her personal struggles in a public way to the time
that she launched her magazine, her book club and the talk show careers of Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray,
Oprah has remained true to her personal brand. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

infomercials and has an internet connection, and, of course, The Apprentice also has a large audience
simply because of all that the man has done to establish his personal brand.
In addition to Oprah and The Donald , there are a variety of others who have built their identities and
empires on a foundation of personal branding. From Madonna to Bill Gates, from Rachael Ray (who
established her brand by promising to teach others to prepare meals in 30 minutes and helping
everyone to recognize that cooking is something that everyone can do) to Richard Branson, personal

Language and the Human Understanding Through Time Essay...
If we were time travelers, would we be able to understand our ancestors? Would we even be speaking
the same language? Important questions about the definition of a language arise when temporal shifts
come into play. Where is the line between a new language, and simply a dialect? Were Shakespeare
and Chaucer writing in different languages? Does Barack Obama use a different dialect than George
Washington did? The deciding factor of whether a language has evolved past the point of dialectical
variation is mutual intelligibility, which can apply to linguistic changes based on geography, ethnicity,
and, although it is less concrete, time. But this begs an important question: how can we test this?
Because we are relying solely on textual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If two dialects of a language change enough because of the combination of geographic distance and
time so that the dialect from one region is not understandable by the people using the other dialect,
then the two are no longer dialects of one language. Instead, they have become two entirely different
languages. Although it is, for the most part, impossible to isolate geography from time, it is possible to
isolate time from geography. The rule of mutual intelligibility still applies: when a language changes
to the point where its modern users cannot understand its traditional texts, then the traditional
language and the modern one can be considered two separate languages. Mutual unintelligibility is not
the case with the English used today as compared to the English used in the late 1770s. For example,
Barack Obama and George Washington, although there may have been small discrepancies,
undoubtedly would have been able to understand each other s writing and speech. We, as students at
the University of Chicago, frequently read texts written in the 1770s and before, and are able to
comprehend them even if they are unabridged. English has not changed enough in the last two
hundred years to constitute two separate languages. However, when it comes to Shakespeare and
Chaucer, it is difficult to say whether they would have been able to understand each other. Although
the time gap between them was roughly the same as the one between Obama

G Metallireducens Research Paper
Kilometers underground, microbes live to tell the tale without oxygen or daylight via feeding on
metals such as iron and manganese. One of these simple microorganisms, Geobacter metallireducens,
comes with an uncommon survival tactic for a lifetime in the underworld: it makes use of a sensor in
order to sniff out metals. In case steel is not nearby, G. metallireducens can spontaneously develop
flagella whip like cellular propellers to discover new energy sources. Metal inhaling microbes are
furthermore beneficial sharers. Different Geobacter species can build the network, allowing them to
trade resources (Dalke, 2002).
When living cells make energy, they make electrons, and these must be dumped somewhere.

If they run out of dissolved metals, they have a plan b. By looking at the genome sequence of another
metal eating microbe of the same genus, scientists have now discovered that G. metallireducens
contains genes for flagella. The flagella genes surprised the scientists who had never seen G.
metallireducens swim. Looking back, the researchers realized that in past motility experiments the
organism had only been grown on soluble metals. After performing experiments with insoluble metals,
such as iron oxide, the team found their plan B. that G. metallireducens indeed develop a flagellum
and swim around looking for any metallic, dissolved or solid. Furthermore, in order to exchange their
electrons to strong metals, they develop nanowires referred to as pili. Quite simply, they re electric.
Metal inhaling microbes are also beneficial sharers, different Geobacter species can build a
community, making it possible for them to trade resources. For example, one might be able to
consume the surrounding nutrients but have nowhere to dispose of its electrons. In addition, the other
might have nothing to eat, but the right wires to dispose of electrons. Together, in a pili network
pulsing with electricity, they work collectively to stay in existence (Dalke,

Compare And Contrast The Civil War A Fight For...
¨Nobody can give you freedom, nobody can give you equality or justice, if you are a man take it¨
Malcolm X. The Civil War was battling for American freedom. During the time of the Civil War not
everybody was free to do as they wanted. Here are two texts that show us what it was like for them
before freedom had come to them. One of the texts is ¨Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an
American Slave¨. The other one is ¨Ain t I a woman¨. The Civil war was successful by redefining how
Americans felt about freedom. The Civil War was a fight for African American freedom. They are just
like us, but because of their skin tone we took advantage of them. The Civil War was trying to put an
end to this to finally get freedom and equality for everyone in our nation. The Civil War succeeded in

The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls
In The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poem talks about the never
ending cycle of life and death and how the world keeps moving on through it all. The theme is shown
through metaphor, repetition, personification, and symbolism. The line The tide rises, the tide falls is a
metaphor for the cycle of life and death. It compares the tide rising to a rise in a new generation. The
tide falling is a comparison for their passing away. This metaphor shows our journey up through life,
but everything must fall. It is not a positive comparison, nor is it negative. It is just a way of life and
showing that it goes on, even if your presence in the natural world may fall apart without a trace. The
repetition of these lines

Imagination in the Poetry of Wallace Stevens Essay example
What are Castratos of moon mash? Who are these seemingly real but only partially embodied figures,
which Wallace Stevens mentions almost in passing at line three in his poem, Men Made Out of Words.
As readers, how are we to understand this short ambivalent phrase, which while confounding us
appears to answer the question raised in the previous two lines: What should we be without the sexual
myth, / The human revery or the poem of death (1 2). Stevens does not elaborate on the image of the
moon mashed castratos he has just presented, but instead using a hyphen formulates and finishes the
relatively short ten line poem. One can argue that this second part of the poem could even be a
separate strophe from the lines already noted, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stevens makes this fact apparent from the beginning of the poem, when he notes not only human
revery but also the sexual myth and the poem of death (1). Therefore, these defined formulations are
only categories of a greater whole, which remains unmentioned in the poem. In deliberating on
Stevens s poems, we can come to understand this encompassing whole as the imagination, which
impels an individual to make eccentric propositions about his or her life and fate (4 5, 10). In his
essay, Imagination as Value, Stevens reminds us that the imagination is the power of the mind over the
possibilities of things [...] it is the source not of a single value but of as many values as can reside in
the possibilities of things (136). With these words in mind and from what we have already noted in
Men Made Out of Words, we can assert that the possibilities of things, mentioned in the essay, are the
same as the reveries, poems, and myths, hinted at in the poem; however, one needs to clarify the
difference between the possibilities of things and the things themselves. For Stevens, the imagination
is metaphysical or something which resides in the abstract but at the time it serves as the only clue to
reality [i.e. things] (137); therefore it is through the imagination that reality derives its possibilities i.e.
its myths, reveries, and poems. In Stevens argument, the imagination is the liberator

Ponce De Leon Biography
Juan Ponce De Leon was a Spanish explorer. In addition to being an explorer, he was also a soldier,
governor, and farmer. Ponce De Leon s exact date of birth is not known. Many believe he was born
around 1460 to 1474 in Santervas De Campos, Spain. He died in July, 1521, in Havana, Cuba. He died
after he was shot by a poisoned arrow from the Indians who were trying to protect their land. Like
most explorers, Ponce De Leon explored for the fame and fortune. He needed a job because he worked
as a squire for a knight until the war ended. After the war ended around 1492, there was not a job for
him so he had to find something else to do. Ponce De Leon also became an explorer because he wasn t
the oldest child in his family. This meant he wouldn t inherit wealth or land when his parents died.
Ponce De Leon had to go out and find a way to earn a living. Ponce De Leon was one of about 1200
men who went with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to Hispaniola in 1493. Columbus
had left on his first voyage to search for a new trade route to Asia and ended up discovering new land.
Trading for jewels, spices and silks was very important to Spain and a new trade route was needed.
When Columbus returned to Spain, he told everyone about the new world he had discovered.
Columbus planned a second voyage to the new land and had a lot of people interested in going with
him to search for riches. Ponce De Leon was one of them. They had seventeen ships on the second
voyage. King Ferdinand

India and Pakistan are So Close and Yet So Far from Each...
Why is it that despite sharing so much in terms of ethnicity, culture, religion, and language, India and
Pakistan hold such animosity and bitterness towards each other? Since their emergence as independent
states from the British Indian Empire in 1947, India and Pakistan have sacrificed considerable blood
battling each other. As part of the independence, India was divided into two separate nations India and
Pakistan. The Hindu states of British India formed the new country of India, while those states with a
Muslim majority became part of Pakistan. The violent partition of India and Pakistan resulted in large
scale armed confrontations and has sustained a continuous distrust between the two countries. They
have been involved in four wars; the first immediately following independence over the state of
Jammu and Kashmir, another in 1965 over the same state, a civil war in 1971 that stemmed into the
creation of Bangladesh and the Kargil war of 1999 fought in Kashmir. The hostility that remains even
fifty five years later instigates questions in our minds as to what lies in the future of the relationship
between these two Asian countries. Is there hope for peace in the near future? Is the antagonistic
behavior between the two nations reflective of the attitudes of their respective citizens? How has this
bitterness affected the recent and current generations of Indians and Pakistanis? And will this continue

The Battle Of Midway, America And The Empire Of Japan
Decisive Point in the Pacific The Battle of Midway became one of the quintessential events in the
struggle between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan. Though the official battle
only lasted for three days, its outcome signified the turning point for the United States in the pacific
theatre as well as the western front where the Allies had begun to achieve a foothold against Adolf
Hitler s Nazi Germany. Though it is just one small piece of World War II, The Battle of Midway
shows how both technological and tactical advances by the United States Navy were able to outwit the
numerically superior Japanese Navy. Japan was a formidable foe, its unyielding resolve pushed the
United States to its limits and had it lost the battle it may have changed how historians view history.
The Midway Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1,486 miles to the west of the
island of Hawaii. The U.S. Navy first occupied the islands in the early 1940 s and used them as a
forward operations base, which included a seaport with multiple landing strips. Both sides saw the
island as a key asset to acquire which in turn would cut the vast size of the Pacific Ocean in half. The
Battle of Midway however was not the first time that the islands saw conflict. On December 7 1941,
about 30 minutes into the attack on the naval port of Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces made their first
attempt to claim the site. They were unsuccessful in there initial attempt but

Stonewall Lesbians In The Stonewall
No discussion of homosexual rights is complete without addressing the looming specter that is
Stonewall. According to Carter s (2005) account, on the night of June 28th, 1969, four plainclothes
police officers, two uniformed officers, a detective of the NYPD, and a deputy inspector approached
the doors of the Stonewall Inn and announced their arrival by shouting Police! We re taking the place!
Following this, they began arresting patrons of the Inn. The scene that night was one of unrest; even
before the riots, there was a general sense of unease and discontent. According to some accounts, the
police attempted to arrest a butch lesbian a stone dyke butch and cracked her over the head with a
baton. After several attempts to escape, as she was being forced into the squad car for the final time,
she shouted: Why don t you guys do something! At this point, the scene had gone from uneasy to
riotous. Although Carter questions whether the Stonewall Lesbian in fact existed, others, have claimed
that the mysterious figure was StormĂŠ DeLarverie (DeLarverie and Chu, 2010). Regardless, what is
clear is the crowd began to throw coins, then followed it up by larger objects such as stones, bricks,
and trash cans. The officers remaining on the scene and a nearby reporter who would publish his
account in The Village Voice took shelter inside the bar, and the former patrons began a siege. At some

Androids share similar features, when a sense of competition is presented, there has to be only one

Alternative A: Organic Structure (internal focus on environmental considerations)
To answer the many external environmental factors affecting IBM s personal computer business they
must raise structural complexity and decentralize decision making through increasing the number of
departments and personnel which individually address such boundary spanning environmental points
as pricing, customer representation, and new technologies. Human resources must be effectively
utilized as key personnel must be recruited both quickly in the transformation and in the future.
A less hierarchical organizational approach will allow for relevant information flow between
departments through the use of design tools such as taskforces and committees which can provide vital
information to decision makers who can quickly react to the changing environmental demands. The
enhancement of useful environmental information will aid in more accurate planning and market

The Mediterranean Diet Vs. Mediterranean Diets
I found the Mediterranean diet with high protein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the
comparison of an american diet to mediterranean diet, which diet would be recommended, and also,
comparing and contrasting health benefits/consequences. This essay is written to bring awareness of
both american and mediterranean diets. The american diet being high in carbohydrates, saturated and
transfats is not the recommended diet when compared to the wholesome fresh produce and high in
protien that the mediterranean diet has to offer. We live in an era where information is at our fingertips
and social media has revealed that other countries diets differ from the diets we have here in the US. I
recently saw a video on facebook comparing US school lunches to other countries school lunches. The
difference on what was provided to US school children was shocking. The most interesting thing was
that the other country schools provided lunches that contained fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and
even fish meanwhile the food being served in US schools is high in refined carbohydrates, sugars and
red meats. This realization made me wonder how different our diets in america is compared to other
diets worldwide. I have personally changed my diet to a mediterranean diet. In doing so I have noticed
major differences in food options, benefits and recommendations for both american and mediterranean

Marginalation Of Women In Tennessee WilliamsA Streetcar...
Women are marginalised in A Streetcar Named Desire through their economic status, their mental
health and their place as a woman in the society of 1940s. They are held as possessions for admiration
and housework. Neither of the men in the play treat them as they should be treated, and see them as
nothing more than a housemaker and a child bearer. Also, it is made prominently clear by Williams
that no woman would be able to survive without a man at that time. However, at some occasions,
Williams portrays that women can prove to be challenging if undermined.
Blanche Dubois is an epitome of this portrayal of women in the 1940s. She s portrayed as a character

They were meant to be flirtatious whist also being chaste. Blanche Dubois tries to maintain this image.
However, without any people witnessing her, she s antithesis to this role. Her solution to her problems
is via escaping to alcohol consumption, promiscuity and madness. This escape portrays that women in
the new emerging world can no longer keep up with the role of a Southern Belle. It is the character of
Stanley that forces her to fall out of this character and show other people who she really is. Here,
Blanche is shown suppressed by him, which leads to her becoming powerless. She cannot overcome
the power and dominance of Stanley. They have an ongoing feud with each other during the play. And
as we know, it is Stanley who prevails through his rape of Blanche. This victory isn t just of Stanley
over Blanche, it is a victory of masculinity over femininity, oppression over suppression, New
America over Old South. By Stanley winning the feud, Williams displays that it s the man who holds
all the cards. The rape implies the ultimate powerlessness of Blanche and women in the play. By
Stanley raping Blanche, it is not just defeat for Blanche, however, it is a defeat for all women in the
play. Through this gesture, Williams has shown that in the 1940s, a woman cannot take home the prize
in a man dominated world.
In addition to this, Williams decides to include the role of a Southern Belle. However, why does he do

The Prince Lessons
The Prince written by Niccolò Machiavelli was first published during the Italian Renaissance in 1532.
The book teaches politicians how to be powerful and yet viewed positively among the people.
Machiavelli discussed actions of past rulers of Europe and whether or not their actions were correct.
He analyzed how these men seized, retained and lost political power as well as land. The book has
lasted throughout the ages and is referred to as a classic by many. The reason behind this is that its
messages are applicable to all forms of government even in present day. However this was not what
Machiavelli intended when he first started writing the book. If read carefully, it can be seen that he

A key lesson is in chapter III when the reader learns how to retain land in a mixed principality. There
are two different types of rulers that Machiavelli talked about. The first one he talked about was King
Louis XII of France. He lectured that King Louis occupied Milan (an Italian state) and just as quickly
lost it (Machiavelli, 9). The author said that he seized it correctly but did not do anything to retain the
land he had captured. Machiavelli then introduces his ideas about retaining land and compares them to
the Romans in that same chapter. He then said the Romans captured and held massive amounts of
surrounding area as they followed the correct actions. Three main actions are taught in chapter three.
The first action is to make a ruler s land/country superior and the defender of your neighboring

  • 2. Machiavelli And The Apology Of The Prince Machiavelli writes The Prince centuries after Plato documents Socrates in Crito and The Apology. Despite the different time periods, both Machiavelli and Socrates experience times of turmoil where the concept of democracy was questioned. However, the different time periods cause the views and purposes of Machiavelli s writing to largely differ from Socrates. Machiavelli writes in a time of turmoil where Italy was a bunch of small, fragmented states and when the Medici s struggled to regain power after being expelled. This causes his views to be more cynical and pessimistic in comparison to Socrates. If Socrates were to read The Prince, he would disagree with Machiavelli s beliefs and deem his portrayal of a prince as immoral. Their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Socrates contradicting views are presented when he claims, Not from money does virtue come, but from virtue comes money and all of the other good things for human beings both privately and publicly (Apology, 30b). Socrates disputes that fortuna comes from virtue and presents a cause and effect relationship, contrary to the interconnected relationship as presented by Machiavelli. A prince should use philosophical thinking to question and explore many ideas in order to amass success. Just having money and luck, on the other hand, will not lead to more success because the prince is unable to think about how he can execute his rulings. Through his views, he connotes how the ruler cannot start his reign with both fortuna and virtue. This contradicts with Machiavelli s prince because Socrates disputes the lack of emphasis on fortune. However, it is plausible to argue that fortuna does not lead to success as seen in Socrates legacy. Socrates legacy is evidence that virtue is the more valuable of the two and the unnecessity of fortuna. Even if Socrates was a poor man, who has found his own philosophy in life, he is a heavily respected figure today. He turned down Crito s fortune and power, and died as a martyr , leading to an increased remembrance of his philosophy. His legacy has lasted thousands of years without fortuna. Although Socrates was not a ruler, he is one of the fathers of democracy, so he is a figure that is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Terrorism is a Means of Serving Political Goals While terrorism that is, violence or the threat of violence aimed intentionally at civilians has been employed since time immemorial as a means of securing political goals, the 1960s ushered in an entirely new form of political violence. Motivated by thinkers like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, this new breed of terrorism struggled in vain to halt the vehicle of Capitalism: as it was steered by the opulent and sustained through exploitation of a bloodied working class. Significant amongst likeminded New Left groups was the Weather Underground Organization (WUO), which conducted a series of bombings in protest against perceived American injustice. This expression of hostility by student activists, albeit far from a true revolutionary movement, stands out as one of the only so called terrorist movements to consistently attack and antagonize on American soil. Although officially formed in 1969, the writings had been on the wall since before 1959 and indicators of the Weather Underground s impending conception were prevalent throughout the previous decade which had served as the perfect mixing pot for cooking up a domestic terrorist cell. At that time, almost half of the American population was under the age of eighteen. And the dawn of this period saw the formation of WUO s precursor organization, Students for a Democratic Society, whose youthful membership was eager to make a difference in an era defined by turbulence, prejudice, and bloodshed. Nowhere near as radical as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Characters Of Harry Potter The Harry Potter book series has sold over 450 million copies and is currently translated into almost every language on the face of the earth ( Harry Potter ). Millions have faithfully followed the story about this magical world and have fallen in love with the many enchanting characters. What most readers do not recognize is the prominence that classical Greek/Roman mythological allusions play in the beloved roles in Harry Potter through their names and personality attributes. The importance of names is extremely significant to a person s identity, especially in literature where words are meant to bring stories to life. Rowling continues this concept through her characters by linking her characters names to classical folklore charismas that share similar personas. Rowling does a fantastic job with cleverly connecting her characters to classical Greek/Roman mythological figures through the etymology of their names and similar personality traits to their wizard counterparts, such as Professor McGonagall and Filch. An apparent allusion to a classical mythological figure is the Hogwarts transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall. Professor McGonagall is an extremely intelligent woman, which is seen because she is tenured teacher who is respected by both her students and fellow professors. She is also known as an excellent strategist in wizard duels, which can be seen clearly in Rowling s last installment when McGonagall duels and defeats Snape when he is in search of Harry ... Compare And Contrast The Renaissance Art And Paintings When looking at the paintings that were created throughout the Renaissance art period, there are multiple paintings that depict religious stories. The best of these paintings has Jesus depicted within them. The majority of these paintings were created by those who had a large impact on the art world today. One of the most famous paintings that reveals religion within it is The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, which is similarly to The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese. When analyzing these two pieces of artwork, they are often confused for the other due to the fact that they are both based on biblical stories as well as how they are organized. There have been multiple discussions about which painting has more impact based on their physical effect. Based on the color and imagery depicted in the painting, The Wedding at Cana, it is one of the most influential and inspiring stories ever told in a religious painting. The painting, The Wedding at Cana, was created in the year 1563 which was a mixed time between two art periods. This was during the end of the Renaissance art period and right in the middle of the Mannerism art period. The Renaissance was the most famous art period in which some of the most influential pieces of work were created. • 9. Liberation Theology Essay Introduction According to Enns (2008), liberation theology attempts to infer the holy writ through the plight of the poor. This movement originated from South America in the early 1950s when Marxism was the most popular theory among the poor. It was a response to the ill treatment and poverty facing the ordinary people. It dealt with the issue of distribution of wealth among people in order to upgrade the economic status in life. This movement had strong Romanian Catholic roots bolstered in Colombia in 1968 at a conference where, the bishops proposed a merger between the Karl Marx teachings with those of Jesus Christ. This is because the theory tends to separate the black and white Christian communities thus enhancing racism which is not religious or biblical. Black Liberation Theology initially intended to assist the black community, but in reality it ended up hurting the more. It promoted negative values for instance: racial tension, victimization, and Marxism ultimately leading to more oppression. Latin American Liberation Theology The liberation theory originally developed from ideologies and activities instigated by the Catholic missionaries in the colonial Latin America. • 10. Literature Is At The Heart Of The Australia English... Assignment 1A: Essay Literature is at the heart of the Australia English Curriculum and is integral to the teaching of language and literacy. Discuss how the children s literature can be used to develop an understanding of the components of the language? Children s literature has existed for as long as there have been stories to be told to children. Stories, books, songs, poems are all made for children. Children s literature does not have a definite definition of what it is; basically, it is anything a child reads (Lerer, 2008). Children begin to learn what reading and writing are used for before even knowing how the system works. Children recognise the function of written language by seeing examples of written language that are being used around them. Many children know the difference between reading and talking, they are aware that written language is used to do things in this world (Emitt, Zbaracki, Komesaroff and Pollock, 2015). Quintilian, John Locke, Saint Augustine and Doctor Seuss speculated on the ways children learn the Australian language and learn about their lives from literature (Lerer, 2008). In fact, Lerer states that the history of children s literature is inseparable from the history of childhood, for the child was made through texts and tales he/she studied, heard and told back, (2008, p.1). Children s literature nurtures an understanding of narrative structures and visual images played in storytelling, this helps develop ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the 1960s, the United States was experiencing the balance of payment problem when its trade balance was in a substantial deficit, the US dollar was under an attack and a massive amount of gold flew out of its official reserve. Such issues in the balance of payment if exist for a long time can be a threat to the whole economy because balance of payment closely interacts with key macroeconomic variables such as GDP, exchange rates, interest rates and inflation rates. The third option to solve balance of payment problem was to impose trade barriers and capital control. Economic growth of the U.S and its allies would also be affected. All three options directly address problem of the current accounts and financial and capital accounts. While deflation and capital control can remedy both current account and financial and capital accounts, devaluation only has immediate impacts on the current account. (Figure 1 bellow illustrates direct impacts of each option to these accounts.) However, as exchange rates, interest rates, economic growth and balance of payments are interacted, when one components of the balance of payment improves, the other accounts will also recover. In a 1966 Atlantic article, Dan Wakefield said that the non fiction work of Capote elevated reporting to the level of literature. Although praising the work of Capote, this goes some way in saying that literature is better than journalism. This is evidence for what Capote said his critics felt: Combining literature and journalism is little more than a literary solution for fatigued novelists. (Plimpton, 1967, p. 16) Newfield (1967, p. 20) said that, This new genre defines itself by claiming many of the techniques that were once the unchallenged terrain of the novelist: tension, symbol, cadence, irony, prosody, imagination. Gay Talese s 1966 article for Esquire magazine, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was a very influential piece of New Journalism that gave a very detailed portrait of Frank Sinatra, without ever having interviewed him. Talese undertook huge amounts of research, as did many of the New journalists, including Capote with In Cold Blood. Unlike Capote, Talese did not invent facts of characters. Important questions about the definition of a language arise when temporal shifts come into play. Where is the line between a new language, and simply a dialect? Were Shakespeare and Chaucer writing in different languages? Does Barack Obama use a different dialect than George Washington did? The deciding factor of whether a language has evolved past the point of dialectical variation is mutual intelligibility, which can apply to linguistic changes based on geography, ethnicity, and, although it is less concrete, time. If two dialects of a language change enough because of the combination of geographic distance and time so that the dialect from one region is not understandable by the people using the other dialect, then the two are no longer dialects of one language. Instead, they have become two entirely different languages. Although it is, for the most part, impossible to isolate geography from time, it is possible to isolate time from geography. The rule of mutual intelligibility still applies: when a language changes to the point where its modern users cannot understand its traditional texts, then the traditional language and the modern one can be considered two separate languages. Mutual unintelligibility is not the case with the English used today as compared to the English used in the late 1770s. For example, Barack Obama and George Washington, although there may have been small discrepancies, undoubtedly would have been able to understand each other s writing and speech. We, as students at the University of Chicago, frequently read texts written in the 1770s and before, and are able to comprehend them even if they are unabridged. In his essay, Imagination as Value, Stevens reminds us that the imagination is the power of the mind over the possibilities of things [...] it is the source not of a single value but of as many values as can reside in the possibilities of things (136). With these words in mind and from what we have already noted in Men Made Out of Words, we can assert that the possibilities of things, mentioned in the essay, are the same as the reveries, poems, and myths, hinted at in the poem; however, one needs to clarify the difference between the possibilities of things and the things themselves. For Stevens, the imagination is metaphysical or something which resides in the abstract but at the time it serves as the only clue to reality [i.e. things] (137); therefore it is through the imagination that reality derives its possibilities i.e. its myths, reveries, and poems. In Stevens argument, the imagination is the liberator ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. India and Pakistan are So Close and Yet So Far from Each... Why is it that despite sharing so much in terms of ethnicity, culture, religion, and language, India and Pakistan hold such animosity and bitterness towards each other? Since their emergence as independent states from the British Indian Empire in 1947, India and Pakistan have sacrificed considerable blood battling each other. As part of the independence, India was divided into two separate nations India and Pakistan. The Hindu states of British India formed the new country of India, while those states with a Muslim majority became part of Pakistan. The violent partition of India and Pakistan resulted in large scale armed confrontations and has sustained a continuous distrust between the two countries. They have been involved in four wars; the first immediately following independence over the state of Jammu and Kashmir, another in 1965 over the same state, a civil war in 1971 that stemmed into the creation of Bangladesh and the Kargil war of 1999 fought in Kashmir. The hostility that remains even fifty five years later instigates questions in our minds as to what lies in the future of the relationship between these two Asian countries. Is there hope for peace in the near future? Is the antagonistic behavior between the two nations reflective of the attitudes of their respective citizens? How has this bitterness affected the recent and current generations of Indians and Pakistanis? And will this continue to affect the future generations? During the British colonial rule in ... • 32. The Battle Of Midway, America And The Empire Of Japan Decisive Point in the Pacific The Battle of Midway became one of the quintessential events in the struggle between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan. Though the official battle only lasted for three days, its outcome signified the turning point for the United States in the pacific theatre as well as the western front where the Allies had begun to achieve a foothold against Adolf Hitler s Nazi Germany. Though it is just one small piece of World War II, The Battle of Midway shows how both technological and tactical advances by the United States Navy were able to outwit the numerically superior Japanese Navy. Japan was a formidable foe, its unyielding resolve pushed the United States to its limits and had it lost the battle it may have changed how historians view history. The Midway Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1,486 miles to the west of the island of Hawaii. The U.S. Navy first occupied the islands in the early 1940 s and used them as a forward operations base, which included a seaport with multiple landing strips. Both sides saw the island as a key asset to acquire which in turn would cut the vast size of the Pacific Ocean in half. The Battle of Midway however was not the first time that the islands saw conflict. On December 7 1941, about 30 minutes into the attack on the naval port of Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces made their first attempt to claim the site. They were unsuccessful in there initial attempt but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the comparison of an american diet to mediterranean diet, which diet would be recommended, and also, comparing and contrasting health benefits/consequences. This essay is written to bring awareness of both american and mediterranean diets. The american diet being high in carbohydrates, saturated and transfats is not the recommended diet when compared to the wholesome fresh produce and high in protien that the mediterranean diet has to offer. We live in an era where information is at our fingertips and social media has revealed that other countries diets differ from the diets we have here in the US. I recently saw a video on facebook comparing US school lunches to other countries school lunches. The difference on what was provided to US school children was shocking. The most interesting thing was that the other country schools provided lunches that contained fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and even fish meanwhile the food being served in US schools is high in refined carbohydrates, sugars and red meats. This realization made me wonder how different our diets in america is compared to other diets worldwide. I have personally changed my diet to a mediterranean diet. Women are marginalised in A Streetcar Named Desire through their economic status, their mental health and their place as a woman in the society of 1940s. They are held as possessions for admiration and housework. Neither of the men in the play treat them as they should be treated, and see them as nothing more than a housemaker and a child bearer. Also, it is made prominently clear by Williams that no woman would be able to survive without a man at that time. The book teaches politicians how to be powerful and yet viewed positively among the people. Machiavelli discussed actions of past rulers of Europe and whether or not their actions were correct. He analyzed how these men seized, retained and lost political power as well as land. The book has lasted throughout the ages and is referred to as a classic by many. A key lesson is in chapter III when the reader learns how to retain land in a mixed principality. There are two different types of rulers that Machiavelli talked about. The first one he talked about was King Louis XII of France. He lectured that King Louis occupied Milan (an Italian state) and just as quickly lost it (Machiavelli, 9). The author said that he seized it correctly but did not do anything to retain the land he had captured. Machiavelli then introduces his ideas about retaining land and compares them to the Romans in that same chapter. He then said the Romans captured and held massive amounts of surrounding area as they followed the correct actions. Three main actions are taught in chapter three. The first action is to make a ruler s land/country superior and the defender of your neighboring lands/countries. The second is to not alter a newly seized territories s way of life and to go and live there. These will both result in the people not viewing the prince as a foreigner therefore having a less chance of rebellion. Lastly keep out and limit foreigners in the prince s seized land.
