In the reviewed literature, a case is made for participatory action research and explanation given on its
composition and on how it enhances the quality of research (Greenwood et al, 1993). They define
participatory action research as a type of research that brings together a member of the organization
(insider) and an expert research to carry out the research process.
Gibbons et al (1994) talks about the knowledge production mode as well as a number of author later
(Huff and Huff, 2001; Huff, 2000; Starky and Madan, 2001; Tranfield and Starky, 1998). The

Safety We continue our educational and training sessions for our staff on all safety procedures on and
off the water. Over the past two months we have hosted regular first aid and CPR training. As the
venue grows the need for in house security has became a priority. Over the past two years we have
outsourced security. Beginning this month we will have one full time and one part time officer on
staff. We are estimating to have a budget saving with in house security. Operations Flood Recovery
During the recent flooding, we sustained damage to equipment, racecourse and docks. While majority
of the damage is covered under the Foundations insurance we do have several items that were not.
One of our large gangways south of the Chesapeake Boathouse washed off of its foundations. Both
Universities docks were washed out for the inlets and are considered a total lose. The foundation has
been working closely with both Universities and the dock manufacture to replace the dock system.
Both Universities have filed claims with FEMA for disaster relieve and are currently working through
the process. We too, filed a claim with FEMA but under the Non Profit guidelines we only qualify for
debris removal and emergency preventive maintenance funding. We will be submitting our staffing

this case, that something is the ancient metaphor of the tree, but what is the something new? Manuel
Lima believes that he has discovered a new metaphor that is on the horizon. In Lima s TED Talk
speech A Visual History of Human Knowledge, Lima discusses the metaphor of the tree of knowledge
and how it connects all things. Lima s primary concern is that this picture is outdated and offers a new
alternative: the network. Lima is correct that the metaphor of the tree is outdated; however, the
network is not a sufficient replacement. The metaphor is lacking in many areas ranging from
showcasing accurate connections to fulfilling the basic purposes of a metaphor. Lima begins his
speech by analyzing the ways humans have been organizing information throughout the centuries. He
discusses the origins of the tree metaphor to describe the wealth of information that was being
discovered at that time and how the metaphor essentially took the world by storm. He provided
examples of the tree in instances ranging from family lineage to Darwin s Tree of Life ; however,
Lima has come to the conclusion that the tree is outdated, and society is begging for a new, more

The first studied found there was a strong correlation between the rate at which someone is arrested
for an offense and the rate of the same offense (Tittle and Rowe, 1974). This was mostly seen in
robberies, when a robber was arrested the rate of robberies would slightly decrease. This poses two
reason of the decrease, either the other people who frequently rob people do it less frequently because
they are frightened to also be arrested, or that the robber who was arrested was a repeat offender. This
is interesting because it doesn t have to be one or the other, the reality is that there is most likely a mix
of both happening. This effect was examined by another researcher who coined the term the tipping
effect, and understood that clearance rates only affect some crime rates and not in others depending on
the offense (Bailey n.d.). This means that the clearance of a crime, which is the closing of an open
case, either by arrest, death, etc. could not always positively impact the crime rate. This is not only a
difference in violent crimes and property crimes because there was a negative association found in
property crimes and clearance rates (Logan, 1975).
This poses four main problems, first the fact that crime rates and clearance rates directly influence
each other. This is a major road block that is preventing the causal effect of the independent variable
on the crime
