The Importance Of Water Infrastructure Financing
Water Infrastructure Financing
Water and sewer utilities are faced with the task of ensuring water quality, addressing aging
infrastructure and meeting with innovations in the industry. There is an urgent need for capital
investment and infrastructure financing to address these issues. This requires hundreds of billions of
dollars and the active participation of both the policy makers and other stakeholders.
Water infrastructure financing comes from several sources, including federal, state, and local sources,
and also from private sectors. Various forms of financing exist including state revolving funds (SRFs),
non SRF state funds, private activity bonds (PABs) and Municipal Bonds (Vedachalam Geddes 2017).

The method of trenchless pipe repair is cutting down on disruptive digging (Bonura 2002).
The use of pipe bursting to replace aging pipes was employed by the city of Austin, Texas, thereby
reducing cost and limiting environmental impacts. Some other cities are moving towards newer
technologies like city of Saginaw, Michigan which replaced all service water pipes with C909 PVC
pipes (Brzozowski 2016).
The corrosive resistant nature of these newer material gives it advantage over corrosive pipes that are
over the country as was highlighted in Flint, Michigan. Utilities are breaking away from the old
methods and using newer materials (Brzozowski 2016).
Water and sewer utilities all over the nation are adopting and upgrading to new technologies like the
smart water meters. These technologies provide real time information on consumption data, monitor
and detects leaks leading to quick and accurate pinpointing of leaks, and they are essential tools in
management of water resources. Studies utilizing smart water meters have shown that information
from the data can be used as management tool, determine water usage patterns, and detection of
leakages (Gurung et al 2014).
Deteriorating Water Quality
Ground and surface water are the main sources for water providers. Many of these nation s waters are
contaminated by pollutants. There are several federal and state regulations to address the issues of
pollution of the waterways by industrial and other sources.

This Is Our Life Poem Comparison
Both of the poems mentioned that because of science fiction we are seeing the world differently.
Instead of seeing the real effects of how we are and what we do we see things to be a fantasy. Seeing
how we re not paying attention to the actual surroundings we don t really think about why things
happen. We just see things as normal because it s something we don t really think about. In the first
poem the opening started out with This is not a fantasy, this is our life. Throughout this poem it
mentions that we are the inventors and that we are the people who make the changes with our
surroundings. Being in charge of this gives us an important role on the things that we hold together.
The second poem just speaks about the negative things about this kind of genre because it denies how
things actually are. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They appear in many things telling us why our surroundings are a certain way and why we make
things be how they are. But the way that it is told on us it just makes us not see the reality of the things
and by that we don t really pay attention on what is occurring. The fact that people want to get rid of
the genre is reasonable because it s just like hearing false propaganda. We must be able to see how the
things we can cause and not be told we have nothing to do with everything that is around us. It s a bad
genre and the way it wants to get removed probably won t have a bad effect on people because then
they would need to stop believing the fictional things and start thinking about the things they

Analysis Of Still Life Flowers
Gloom and Formality: An Analytical Approach to Monnoyer s Still Life: Flowers
Still Life: Flowers is a 17th century painting by Jean Baptiste Monnoyer. It is an oil on canvas, and
presently resides in the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto. The piece is a traditional still life. It is
vertical in its organization; the viewer s eye lands on the bright flowers and scans from top to bottom.
There are indicated lines, where the flowers grow upwards and where they drape over the sides of the
pedestal. This formation of flowers creates a triangular like shape. At the same time, the draping
flowers direct the viewer s eye down to the carved relief sculptures on the ledge, concealed in the
shadows and break this triangular formality. The emphasis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The vertically arranged structure of the painting is translated through the indicated line of the growing
flowers. This line meets the horizontal line, which is set by the surface holding the flowers; creating a
uniform L shaped structure. However, there is some contrast to this traditionality. Only very subtly did
Monnoyer stray from this structure; through the draping flowers over the side of the ledge. The
formation of the flower arrangement indicates a triangular like shape, which creates a slightly more
dynamic focal point. It moves the viewer s eye away from the L structure, to focus on the rich colours
found throughout the triangular formation of the floral arrangement. Another line, this line being more
subtle yet still diverging the viewer s attention away from the formality of the perpendicular lines, is
created by the drapery in the dark background. It is one of the only visible features found in the
shadows, and guides the viewer s eye diagonally across the composition and to the vibrant floral
arrangement.
This oil painting displays great contrast between the lush, intense reds and pinks of the flower
arrangement and the shadowy, dark background. There is almost no definite setting, as the background
is not visible to the viewer, with the exceptions of the drapery hidden in the shadows and the sculpted
pedestal that the flowers sit upon. It is

The Mentality Of Baseball In Fences By August Wilson
August Wilson uses baseball ideology to construct the mindset of his protagonist, Troy Maxson, in
Fences ; however, Wilson also uses Troy to embody black America in the 50s. The metaphorical and
literal significance of baseball is the driving force Troy s subjectivity and ideology. Whether it be
comparing death to baseball pitch, warning his son to not strikeout, or complaining about being stuck
on first base, Troy uses baseball to explain life to those around him. Ironically, it is baseball that
actually leads to Troy s psychic castration. Although Troy was older when he was released from prison
and playing in the Negro leagues, racism held younger players from competing with white Americans
and there is no doubt that Troy saw this as what held him back as well. Unable to play in the major
leagues bitters Troy s attitude towards life and affects his relationship with his son, Cory, and wife,
Rose. While on a micro level, the rules and mechanics of baseball have a negative impact on Troy s
mentality, on a macro level Troy s loyalty to the game can be seen as an empowering force for black
America in the 50s. The idea of not striking out, and the fetish of the home run is meant to represent
the black community s resistance against society s racism during this time. Although the ideology of
baseball consumes Troy to the point of his own personal strikeouts, the ideology itself, and who Troy
represents, is suppose to represent black America s fight against a racist

Enron And Corporate Culture Of Enron
Introduction
In 1985 The Enron Corporation came into existence after a successful merger between two gas
pipeline companies. The company nurtured a very competitive culture, which encouraged employees
to win at any means necessary. Enron s culture led employees to cast loyalty and ethics aside in favor
of high performance (Ferrell, p. 494). The executives of Enron covered up their increasing debt by
using special purpose entities. Meanwhile, Enron continued to report increasing profits to their
investors, which led to more investors giving Enron their money. There were many factors that aided
Enron in their demise, but the largest was the greed of Enron s executives, the auditors, and the
attorneys. The corporate culture of Enron, their auditors bankers and attorneys and their Chief
Financial Officer played vital roles in the fall of Enron.
How did the corporate culture of Enron contribute to its bankruptcy?
In its wake, Enron s CEO, Ken Lay, wanted Enron to be a company which cultivated a culture that
allowed employees the opportunity to reach their full potential. Lay wanted to make Enron a company
that had high integrity and moral values, but as time progressed Enron became a company which
pushed its integrity aside to engage in fraudulent behavior so that the executives could earn more
profit (Ferrell, p. 487). Enron s corporate culture would be best described as very proud and arrogant.
The company even displayed a banner in their lobby which stated, The

Solon s Use Of Herodotus To Convey The Message Of Croesus
Herodotus book has, so far, contained stories that seem to emphasize the moral message of staying
humble and not taking things for granted. The stories tend to teach the lesson that if one is too prideful
or greedy, fate will intervene and ruin them. This is shown before Croesus is even introduced. One of
the first times this message can be seen is when Candaules boasts of his wife s beauty and in turn loses
his life for it.
Solon s poetry shows that he has similar values as Herodotus. In his poetry, Solon says that he desires
wealth, but that he knows that wealth held the wrong way often results in retribution. Solon also writes
about how fate is unavoidable and unpredictable, anything could happen whether it s good or bad.
Therefore, Solon is a useful character to convey the message about Croesus because Herodotus can
use a person in history whose beliefs support his own. Herodotus uses Solon to blatantly state that
having more wealth is not everything and to inform Croesus that he should be less greedy and to think
about what fate could have in store. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ode says that people should cherish the thought of being able to see the sunshine one last time and

Herodotus book, Solon says that he cannot judge someone s happiness until they are dead, because the
present realities for individuals are often only temporary. Both Bacchylides and Herodotus appear to

Satirical Techniques Used In Andy Weir s The Martian
Andy Weir never meant for his book to become a smashing hit turned into a movie. The Martian takes
place on the planet Mars with astronaut Mark Watney stranded on the deserted planet. Mark has a hole
in his stomach, no communication with NASA, is left with no choice rationing his food to save his
life. In this edge of your seat story, Andy Weir uses suspense as well as humor to make living on Mars
seem a little more bearable. Andy Weir originally wrote the novel The Martian for his science blog
readers with added elements of humor + suspense to create an award winning novel. Before becoming
a bestselling author, Andy Weir was just a science blogger who wrote The Martian for his science blog
readers, andnever dreamed of his novel evening going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another instance in which Weir blends suspense into his writing is:
Potatoes are now extinct on Mars. (Weir 171).
When the hab blows up, Marks potatoes were exposed to the frigid temperatures of Mars, in which
they almost immediately shrivel up and die. This is showing how one little thing gone wrong results in
chain event that doesn t end well. The book would be very predictable and boring without the element
of suspense.
By creating this bestselling novel, Andy Weir has set up a formula for any science fiction novel to be
written with his incorporation of sarcasm with the added sense of fear. Weir was a child raised under
two science involved parents, so it s no wonder where he got the inspiration from. By using sarcasm,
Weir developed a sort of Watney style of humor. The reader doesn t just see it as joking. Humor is one
of the main things that keeps Mark alive. By keeping the readers on the edge of their seat with twists
and turns no one saw coming, it s hard to find a chance to set this book down! Because The Martian is
such a enthralling novel, Weir could be on the way to writing another

The Picture Of Dorian Gray, And The Phantom Of The Beholder
There is an old saying that declares: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder . This suggests that beauty is
subjective, and lacks a concrete contextualized definition; what is perceived by one individual as
attractive, may be, by another, considered unattractive. Regardless of the subjective nature of beauty,
society still conforms to beauty ideals, which are propagated and fueled by the media. The beauty
ideals that are self imposed by society are problematic because they are unattainable, and galvanize
society to reject or promote people based on their outward appearance and hold people s inner beauty
in less regard. The imbalance between physical (outward) appearance and inward is a key theme in
both The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Phantom of the Opera. In both novels, the main characters
are subject to judgment that is overwhelmingly directed at their outward appearance, and we see an
over emphasis of the superficial, which ultimately leads to their downfall. Another important thematic
element present in both novels is that the main characters have conflicting dual personalities that have
changing roles as the story progresses. A contrasting thematic element in both books is the excessive
praise that the main character in The Picture of Dorian Gray received, and the excessive criticism that
the main character in The Phantom of the Opera received, both leading to negative outcomes, and the
characters ultimate demise.
Both the characters of Erik and Dorian in The

Marriage and Gender Roles Within Married Life
Marriage and Gender Roles Within Married Life
Marriage is one of the most sacred and intimate rituals or celebrations that exist in all religions. It is
often seen as an important and a defining step in your life. Traditionally, marriage is a ritual and
ceremony that celebrates the official joining of two people by law. This definition of marriage varies
from culture to culture since marriage can be viewed differently for them. The two religions of
Hinduism and Buddhism both allow marriages, but have many similarities and differences between
them in their wedding ceremonies, in the roles of husband and wife, and in their beliefs on divorce.
Wedding ceremonies are often seen as a big deal and is a cherished moment in the couple s
relationship. Many rituals and symbols are present in a wedding ceremony and are often unique to the
couple s religion or culture. In Hinduism, wedding ceremonies are a big deal and has many
components to create a very beautiful, and sacred ceremony. The ceremony often lasts for hours, days
and weeks since there are a number of ceremonies held prior to the wedding day. Some of the
ceremonies include the Misri (ring ceremony), the Mendhi Party, Raas Garba and the Ghari Puja.
Hindu weddings traditionally take place outside, in nature, under a canopy called the mandap. An
important symbol in the ceremony is to light a sacred fire which is placed under the mandap. The
sacred fire is lit to call Agni, the fire God, to bear witness to the wedding

A Observation Of My Observation
Lightbox:
At the beginning of my observation, the lightbox was a center that always had a child in it. The
children do spend a significant amount of time (about 10 minutes or more) in this center, building
things that are color see through. However, whoever was in this center spends a large amount of time
in it, since it s a small space as well it s limited to two children at a time. It gets less attention than the
other centers in the room. Later on in the end, of my observation period, it got less attention. I believe
it was a result of newer things that were introduced in the classroom that took the attention away from
this center. Another issue, it s located in an area that s almost hidden away in the back of the room in a
corner. The children would have to get through the other centers or areas on the way to the Lightbox.
It could be possible the children s interest changes on the way there seeing another child playing in
another center that looks more appealing. I would recommend changing the material in this center
weekly or bring in new materials to freshen up the center and to renew interests from the children.
Sensory:
This area always has at least one child at it at all times. The children really enjoyed feeling things with
their hands. The times that the sensory area was less populated depended on the materials that were
used in the sensory tub. When it was things like small toy balls, baking pans, and tongs it was a dry

Sigmund Freud Superego Essay
In the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud the idea of the super ego was developed. The superego
as defined by Britannica is the ethical component of the personality and provides the moral standards
by which the ego operates. The superego s criticisms, prohibitions, and inhibitions form a person s
conscience, and its positive aspirations and ideals represent one s idealized self image, or ego ideal.
Freud himself described the super ego as the long period of childhood, during which the growing
human being lives in dependence on his parents, leaves behind it as a precipitate the formation in his
ego of a special agency in which this parental influence is prolonged. It has received the name the
super ego.

We convince ourselves that the inner voice we hear is good but it is actually a false voice we have
fabricated for ourselves. The superego instils barriers in our lives, makes us less open to the world

unplanned experience reaching us. These barriers come from previous experience. The negative

Medieval Art Essay
Medieval Art
In the art world, the medieval periods were traditionally though to be the unproductive phase of
Europe between the decline of Rome and the Renaissance. Our modern feelings toward medieval art
are far more appreciative. The main intent of Medieval art was to express Christianity which was also
a common bond between a wide spread and diverse Europe. For this reason most of the art found from
medieval times originated in monasteries and churches. European art during the Middle Ages can be
divided into four periods. These four periods include Celto Germanic art which ranged from 400 to
800 A.D. and was important in metal work. Carolingian art ranged from 750 to 987 A.D. overlapping
50 years of the Celto Germanic period. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Carolingian style is of small dimensions. Most of this style pulls its influence from Byzantine
artwork. An explanation for the sudden change from Celto Germanic styling can be attributed to the
new minuscule form of writing, remarkable for its clarity and form (Pioch). Metal work from this time
period is rare although writings tell us that goldsmiths and enamel workers remained active.
Romanesque The art of the Romanesque period was characterized by the revival of sculptures and
fresco painting. These were common elements of architecture. Along with those architectural
advancements the period produced frequent examples of realism as well as a heightened emphasis on
emotion and fantasy. The crusades acted as a main contributor to this time period lending more
religious and revolutionary imagery. Examples of Romanesque sculpture are dated back to the last
decade of the eleventh century and then first decades of the twelfth. The primary source of artistic
patronage was provided by the monastic institutions, for whom sculptors executed large relief
carvings for the decoration of church portals and richly ornate capitals for cloisters (Cleaver 156)
Another aspect of the Romanesque revival was the production of metalwork objects, of which many
outstanding examples, such as crucifixes, reliquary shrines, and candlesticks, are still preserved in
church treasuries. It was

An Exploration Of Budgeting And Forecasting
Summary
This paper will be an exploration of budgeting and forecasting and how they are determined and why
they need to be re evaluated at the organization I work for. Furthermore, the hope is to uncover some
of the underlining causes that are the drivers that trigger the re evaluations in our organization as well
as discover ways to mitigate those factors.
Background
Like any other business we need to lower our costs, we apparently have difficulties creating a realistic
budget, at least initially, and also have great difficulties with accurately forecasting. Are budgeting
problems for new products could be due to the fact that prospective costs on new parts take a while to
get properly entered into the system, combine that fact with a 12 month projection, times the number
of parts missing cost information from our budget document and there will be quite a difference in
actual costs at the end. By using a bill of materials for as a guide for new products, items with over $5
per item actually cost difference can be off by as much as 80% overall.
We are not any better at forecasting or predicting are sales revenue. It is not as conservative as it
should be, we may be taking only the optimistic view or we do not have a good understanding of our

Ancient Egyptian religion was a complex system made up of polytheistic beliefs and rituals. Religion
played a large role in every aspect of the ancient Egyptians lives because life on earth was only seen

Although there was a clear disregard for the well being of others, members of the group had the
thought of justice instilled within them. And so, violence, arson, and stealing may have been viewed
as mainly positive, because it was done in the name of Gray. However, Gray s mother did not see it
that way, saying I want y all to get justice for my son, but don t do it like this here (Yan and Ford). For
protesters, Gray s death was seen as worthy of such an extreme response.
Type two, close mindedness, mainly sees a group disregarding outside opinions. In August of 2016,
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel staff reported riots breaking out in Milwaukee after officers shot and
killed armed suspect Syville Smith (Glauber et al.). With the exception of serious harm toward
officers, events occurred similar to that of the Baltimore riots. The factor that distinguished the two
was the protester s stereotyping of out groups . Which is described as a refusal to reason with out
groups due to stereotypes (Janis 86). Intern for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Asian American,
Aaron Mak experienced this directly. He along with another white photojournalist were reporting on
scene, when they needed to hide behind a vehicle to avoid violence. Protesters had spotted the
photographer, and Mak heard Get your white ass out of here! and You better not

Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease
Critical Analysis
Introduction
Hypertension impacts nearly 25% of the adult population around the world. It is considered one of the
foremost risk factors for mortality, and is responsible for 13.5% of all deaths. In addition, half of all
strokes and ischemic cardiac disease are triggered from high blood pressure (Pepin et al.2014).
According to the newest guidelines, hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure greater than
or equal to 140 or a diastolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 90 (Jin, 2014). Systemic
hypertension remains one of the most modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In
hypertensive patients, between 12% 27% require at least 3 medications to achieve sufficient control;
these patients are considered to have resistant hypertension. Furthermore, those with resistant
hypertension have a 50% greater chance of experiencing a cardiovascular event in comparison to
those without resistant hypertension, and according to the literature, the numbers of cases are
increasing (Martinez Garcia et al. 2013). As of recent, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been
recognized as a risk factor in the development of hypertension according to European and US
International guidelines (Pepin et al. 2014). Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by the collapse of
the upper airway during sleep, consequently ending in intermittent asphyxia. Moreover, this disruption
increases brain arousal, transient hypoxemia, and increased sympathetic flow.

Why Women Should Not Be Allowed in Combat Occupations Essay
Since 1901, women have served in some form of the military, however, dating back to the American
Revolution women have had an unofficial role. Women have had and will continue to have an
important role in the military, the question is whether women should be allowed to occupy specific
combat positions. Traditionally women have not been allowed in combat occupations, but recently
these restrictions have been somewhat lifted, making certain occupations available to women. Despite
the lift complications arise from women being in combat vocations and it s not just because of the
physical differences, there is also the increased risk of sexual assault. Due to the detrimental impact on
the military, soldiers, and society, women should not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In January 1994, the Secretary of Defense Les Aspin overturned the risk rule excluding women from
any positions that could expose them to direct combat, hostile fire, or capture; the rule was replaced by
the direct ground combat assignment rule, which more narrowly tailored the restriction to front line
combat positions. (Mackenzie) According to the 1994 Department of Defense policy, women were
limited from some occupational specialties if those specialties were physically located with direct
ground combat units. According to a press release the Army will begin implementing the DoD policy.
Removing the restrictions opened 13,139 Army positions to women, occupations like; Multiple
Launch Rocket System crewmember, MLRS operations fire detection specialist, Field artillery fire
finder radar operator specialist, M1 Abrams tank system maintainer, Bradley Fighting Vehicle system
maintainer, and Artillery mechanic. (Wong)
Regardless of the recent policy changes, the distinction between combat and support roles are still
unclear. Since women are permitted to serve in such support units, a major barrier designed to keep
them away from combat has vanished. (Mackenzie) In today s war there is no clear front line or a safe
area in the rear, making combat support operations

Myrtle Wilson And The Great Gatsby
On Thursday last week, two murders have taken place. Myrtle Wilson, wife to a small garage owner,
was hit and killed instantly by a speeding car two evenings ago. She had run out into the middle of the
street for unknown reasons when the death car hit her. The car was allegedly a yellow or green color
and was guessed to be traveling around 40 miles per hour when it hit Myrtle. This car was coming
from New York; it swerved a little but did not stop when passing Wilson s garage in East Egg. Wilson
himself could hardly gain composure after the accident. A few witnesses had seen what happened and
gave their testimonies to a local police officer. Bang, was the sound the body and yellow car made
when it made contact with the car, one witness said. There were no known suspects or motives at the
time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Between Ancient Chinese And Their Relationships With...
People sceptical of Chinese traditional culture s relevance to modern environmental concerns will
point out that ancient Chinese had no term for nature in, as it were, the David Attenborough sense
nature as what natural historians study, and what TV nature programmes are programmes about. This
does not mean that the Chinese were unable to talk about natural landscapes and wild things, nor that
their concept of nature were without implications for our relationship to nature in this sense. It does
indicate, though, that the Chinese were not wedded to a wilderness ideal and that they did not
emphasis a sharp distinction between the human and nature world.
Leisure in the ancient Chinese study will uncover the relationship between ancient Chinese and their
relationships with nature.
Echoing with the introduction chapter, the definition of leisure in ancient China refers to characters of
both xiu (a person leaning against a tree) and xian (refinement and the purity and peacefulness of
mind). As Shuowen has it, xiu character should depict such as scene also reflects the Chinese
understanding of man s relationship with and their worship of nature .
The concept of leisure contains harmonious relationships between human beings and nature, with
humans being considered part of nature. Thus, we should not want only offend nature, but should take
the reverence of nature to be natural. In ancient times, the Chinese used the term tiandi (heavens and
the earth) to mean nature and

Thanatopsis And Emerson s View On Nature
There are many different views of nature presented in the two poems and Emerson s article Nature.
Thanatopsis and Nature share their viewpoint on the beauty of nature. While The Subalterns has the
opposite view of the other two pieces of what nature really is. Nature , Thanatopsis , and The
Subalterns are very different pieces; Thanatopsis and Nature view nature as a beautiful paradise, while
The Subalterns looks at nature as a dismal prison. Thanatopsis and The Subalterns although similar in
structure are different in view. Thanatopsis views nature as a beautiful, serene place that sings to a
person. Bryant says that nature has a voice of gladness (Bryant, line 4). He says that it sings, Into his
darker musings, with a mild and healing sympathy (Bryant, lines 6 7). Bryant says that nature is

meanings of nature. Emerson thinks nature is beautiful and elegant. He describes nature as poetical.
When we speak of nature in this manner, we have a distinct but most poetical sense in mind (Emerson,
Page 897). He also describes how nature touches a child. The sun illuminates only the eye of the man,
but shines into the heart of a child (Emerson, Page 898). Bryant also discusses nature as a beautiful
and elegant part of life. She has a voice of gladness, and a smile and eloquence of beauty (Bryant,
lines 4 5) Bryant describes nature as majestic also. The venerable woods rivers that move in majesty

Addison s Disease
A disorder that takes place when your body produces an insufficient amount of certain hormones that
are produced by the adrenal glands is called Addison s disease. With Addison s disease, the adrenal
glands do not produce enough cortisol and often times an insufficient amount of aldosterone as well.
Doctors sometimes refer to Addison s disease as the illness of chronic adrenal insufficiency, or also
called hypocortisolism. In 1855, Thomas Addison first described adrenal insufficiency, which was
subsequently named after him. The basis of Addison disease has dramatically changed since its initial
description. Originally, the disease usually resulted from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A person should visit their doctor for the diagnosis of this disease if they have severe fatigue, muscle
or joint pains, salt cravings, unintentional weight loss, and gastrointestinal problems, such as vomiting
and abdominal pain and nausea. The cause of Addison s disease is the result of the adrenal glands
being damaged and producing insufficient amounts of cortisol and aldosterone as well. The adrenal
glands are located just above the kidneys. Being part of the endocrine system, the adrenal glands
produce hormones that give instructions to almost every organ and tissue in the body. The adrenal
glands are made up of two different sections. The interior (medulla) which produces hormones similar
to adrenaline. The (cortex) outer layer has the role of producing a group of hormones that are called
corticosteroids; these include mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids and the male sex hormones known
as (androgens). Addison s disease takes place when the cortex is damaged and does not produce
hormones in adequate quantities. Doctors often refer to this condition that involves damage to the
adrenal glands as a primary adrenal insufficiency. When the adrenal glands fail to produce
adrenocortical hormones it is commonly a result of an autoimmune disease where the body is
attacking itself. For an unknown reason the immune system sometimes views the

the most difficult issue with cybersecurity is implementing policy controls that are applicable and

controversial topic that policy controls need to address is Meta data collection and its terms of usage

It is for these reasons that the collection, retention, and sharing of that data must be regulated.
Government regulations could help protect consumers in a variety of ways. The first policy suggestion
would be to provide users with increased control over their personal data. There are a few key
strategies that can be used to increase consumer privacy. The first one is the opt in rule, which means
collection of customer data does not happen by default, and can only happen after a consumer has
given explicit consent. The opt out rule is the collection of consumer data occurs by default and it is
up to the consumer to choose to have that collection stopped. A final strategy is the anonymizer, which
allows consumers to use a businesses services while being logged in under an anonymous log in
(Newman, 2014). Additionally, government policy and regulation should be aimed at increasing the
competition in the marketplace, hence the term marketplace competition, as means of ensuring that
there are multiple businesses that are able to offer varying degrees of privacy protection to consumers
(Newman, 2014). The government can also regulate private business collection and use

Analysis Of Nanook Of The North By Robert Faherty
Final Paper Early documentaries, like those done by Robert Flaherty have similarities with the Italian
neorealism films, especially by those of Vittorio De Sicca. De Sica pulled documentary filming
techniques to make his films seem realistic and to almost have a documentary feel to them. Italian
neorealism rejected the opulence of Hollywood and instead only wanted to portray real people and
their struggles. To do that De Sica borrowed some techniques that made Flaherty s films so successful
and seemingly real; like that of the long take, close ups, and unobtrusive editing. De Sica wasn t the
only one to borrow techniques, Flaherty also fictionalized part of his narrative in order for it to portray
the life he thought was accurate. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We see this in both Nanooks attempt to wrangle the large walrus, which we see in an unedited,
unobstructed view of his attempt to take it on shore to kill and eat. This is a long scene without
obvious editing that shows the entire task of harpooning the walrus and then dragging it ashore. As
well as the window making scene that the audience sees later. This scene occurs when Nanook and his
family are working on making the igloo and Nannok goes off to carve a large block of ice, as to act as
a window to let in light to the otherwise dark igloo. Once Nanook has this large block of ice and is
attempting to put it into the igloo, cutting the snow around it to make space, and then packing it back
in around the new window , this is the long take. It is an unbroken shot showing the viewer a complex
action. We also see other examples of this in some of the scenery shots. Examples of the Inuit
traversing the arctic plane from a wide angle are meant to impress upon the viewer how impressive the
scenery is, and that it is in fact very real and dangerous. Another technique Flaherty used were close
ups, which are a shot close to the subject of the scene, either human or object. Flaherty uses these
shots to fully immerse the viewer in the film, and to also impress upon the audience the humanity and
relatability of his subjects. We are shown close ups of mother and child, the child resting in the back
of her coat, sleeping on her shoulder. These shots

The Face In The Pool Analysis
G. R. Thompson s essay, The Face in the Pool: Reflections on the Doppelgänger Motif in The Fall of
the House of Usher , and Ki Yoon Jang s essay, Edgar Allan Poe and the Author Fiction: The Narrative
of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, both look at works of Poe in order to uncover a deeper
understanding of the text. Thompson uses formalist critical methods and Jang uses structuralist critical
methods in their essays, both of which are identified by examining each paper for the elements that
define their critical method. Thompson and Jang use Poe s works as the topic of their paper, but
address it in a different ways. Thompson uses a close reading to demonstrate the inability of humans
to know anything with certainty, exploring the layers of complexity within the text that create the
ambiguity found in Gothic and supernatural tales. He notes that Poe s images are doubled throughout
the text to give the eerie feeling of an internal spiraling into madness. Thompson tracks the physical
and mental state of the narrator in the house. The first half is doubled through the second half, but with
a quicker decline. In the end, Usher s face is symbolically double with the fallen house to reemphasize
the tale s madness. In contrast, Jang s essay argues that Poe is using the relationship between author,
narrator, and reader to show its place in the American literary tradition of the sovereign author. Jang
examines the Preface for Pym s authorial disposition (Jang 359) as he

The Hard Determinist Does Not Exist
People who believe that we have no free will, that there is no free actions are known as a hard
determinists. In other words, hard determinism is the doctrine that there are no free actions. To them,
everything is casually determined and no one acts freely. The hard determinist does not deny that it
seems that we have free will. What they deny is that the way things seems is the way they are.
Nothing could ever be any other way than the way it is. Choices do not exist, free will does not exist,
and randomness does not exist. What happens depends entirely on the previous arrangements of its
cause and could not be otherwise. Hard determinist argue that all human actions are casually
determined and therefore we act freely and cannot be held morally responsible for our actions. As an
example Bob and Tom are stuck in a room. In one hand, Bob has chocolate cake and in the other hand,
he has an apple, Bob is offering him one. Tom was given a choice to either choose the chocolate cake
or the apple and he chose the chocolate cakes. To Tom, in his mind, he would say that he chose the
chocolate cake on his own free will. If he wanted to, he could have chosen the apple, nothing forced
him to pick the chocolate cake, he chose it because he wanted it, and he was free to choose either. A
hard determinist would say that his past events made him chose the chocolate cake. Maybe as a child,
he was given the sweet sugary treat more often the healthy fresh apple and because of that reason, he

Mesopotamia vs. Indus River Valley Essay
Mesopotamia vs. Indus River Valley 9/26/12
Ancient Mesopotamia and the Indus River Valley civilization were two incredibly productive and
successful empires. While Mesopotamian politics were slightly less focused on religion and more on
other aspects, the two societies shared many social characteristics. They both had defined social
hierarchies, as well as similar views on gender roles. These traits are helpful in explaining the
similarities and differences between the two cultures. One of the key aspects of both Mesopotamia and
the Indus River Valley is their distinct social hierarchies. In the Indus River Valley, beginning with the

They did not have the right to divorce their husbands, and almost all women were uneducated. In
Mesopotamia, women were also treated very poorly. They were taught to attend to all of their husband
s needs, and could be punished severely if they did not do as their husband said. In Babylonia, during
Hammurabi s rule, there was even a law that stated that if a woman did not obey her husband or was
unfaithful to him in any way, he was legally allowed to throw her in the river, ultimately drowning her.
While Mesopotamian and the Indus River Valley were alike in their social characteristics, their
political views differed slightly. Records from the Indus civilizations have yet to fully been translated,
and therefore not much is known in the way of Indus political structure. What most historians assume
is that it was broken into city states with a common ruler, which is the way that Mesopotamia was
governed as well. Despite this similarity, the Indus government was more focused on religious aspects
than Mesopotamian government was. This can be deduced by the fact that Indus rulers were always
priest kings, while the highest status in Mesopotamia was achieved first by the king, and then by the
priests. These kings were also usually the head of the military, while the priests ran schools,
distributed land, were considered doctors, and were in charge of religion. Kings and

Current and Potentially Future control Strategies:
In 2003 a global disease outbreak of what is now known as Server Acute Respiratory Syndrome, but
was unknown to many scientists occurred. The epidemic s origin was in Guangdong province of

people in the countries of Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Thailand and the United

illness around the body. This aided in the prevention of spreading the virus as increases breathing rates
disrupted the virion cells, causing them to spread further to uninfected epithelial cells. (Cdc.gov, 2017)
While quarantine refers to the isolation of a person who, does not show any symptoms of the disease
but has been exposed to SARS and could potentially become infectious. (Cdc.gov, 2017)
A travel advisory was put in place so that travellers, airline crew and airlines where made aware of the
outbreak and told to report anyone displaying the symptoms of the virus. (Who.int, 2017) Quarantine,
the isolation of asymptomatic individuals who are thought to be incubating infection, was a prominent
control strategy used, which successful controlled the spread of the disease.
Currently there is no confirmed treatment or vaccine that works for every case of SARS. Over time
the body s immune system and in particular the third line of defence produces the effective B cell
(antibody) which can kill the virus. The presence of the virus will be detected and phagocytes engulf
invading virus cells and mark them as forging material otherwise known as antigens. B cells notice
that the antigens have been presented on the phagocytes and will begin to secrete large quantities of
the correct antibodies. This will take time as SARS is a new form of virus and has not infected human

Most OIT protocols include an initial dose escalation, followed by a gradual dose build up and a

Adam Smith s Economic Philosophy
If I was to create the perfect society today, I would use Adam Smith s economic philosophy. Adam
Smith is known today as a modern philosopher. In order for a society to prosper, Smith believed that
their economy would have to function as a capitalist economy. The perfect, most efficient, society
would include specifically Smith s capitalist ideas of the division of labor, the sufficient pay of
workers, and would not include the use of slavery. These ideas will make the perfect society prosper.
The most important component of having the perfect, most efficient society, would be the division of
labor. The division of labor consists of one person doing one small task, another person doing another
small task, and other workers continuing the same process until the final product is complete. An
example of this would be the use of an assembly line while making pins, as Smith mentions in his
book An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Smith explains that the larger
pin manufacture he saw with many workers, was more efficient than the small manufacture of only ten
employed workers who could make upwards of forty eight thousand pins in a day (Smith, 4). Smith
then goes on to explain that, But if they had all wrought separately and independently...in consequence
of a proper division and combination of their different operations (Smith, 4 5). Smith is saying that the
workers could have made more than forty eight thousand pins in a day if they divided there

Female Labor Force And Sterilization Practices
I would like to compare and contrast the subject of the Female Labor Force and Sterilization Practices.
As the progressive era began, there are a lot of changes for the women s labor force with respect to
politics. They were stronger because they stood up for themselves, refusing to be victims any longer
and they did so by way of going on strike and making demands (Dubois Dumenil, 2016). The labor
force at this time was 18.3% of women, which when compared to the 2014 statistic of 57%, shows a
substantial increase over this period of time ( Women in the Labor Force, n.d.). Wage rates for the
women in the early 1900 s continues to be approximately half of what the men earned, as well as there
was a division between occupations and business sectors between the sexes so women were not given
many options in the labor force. Many single women were limited to working in factories or domestic
labor. However, as time progressed, more opportunities such as clerical positions, which were once a
male dominated field, began to open for women. This gave them steady wages, clean and safe
working conditions but eventually had a similar setting as factories and some were even paid per piece
wages. Eventually, by the 1920 s, there were even professional fields opening up for the educated
female workforce. This gave women personal independence as they were in positions such as
medicine, law and teaching to name a few. However, these professional women would begin to have
problems as we

Essay about Incest
Incest
Incest is one of the most interesting taboos of our time. The definition of incest is a highly
controversial topic. Yet, the definition of incest is one of the most important definitions for the people
involved, though the law s and psychologists meanings are not much the same. Incest needs to be
similarly defined for the incestuous parties, both by the law and by psychologists. The definition of
incest should be determined by the cases of incest. The people who commit incest, and the types of
incest should be considered when making this definition for the law. Why incest occurs has a great
deal to do with the people and the types of incest. With the definition dissimilar between the law and
psychologists, it is very difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Armstrong, pg 235) If the daughter is seductive, then she might gain power over her father. This is
not always true for mother son incest. Mother son incest is usually brought on as a way to highly
express love, Asex education quot;, or the mother is promiscuous. If the mother feels like she is
expressing her love to her son, then she uses sex as a means of closeness. (Justice, pg 102) There is
either no husband or a passive husband. The mother can be very seductive and encourage the son to
have sex with her and limits the son s social life. She acts on a Adon t leave me quot; attitude to keep
her son tied down. Sometimes the son gets aroused my his mother and then becomes the aggressor.
(Justice, pg 103) If he isn t attracted to mom, why not be attracted to his sister? This is the case in
brother sister, or sibling incest. It is less traumatic and the guy acts kind of proud about it. The
brothers can become violent and force their sister to join in, although usually the sister is willing to
participate. (Justice, pg 105) When both of the children are shy, the girl sees him as the only boyfriend
she will ever have and becomes flirtatious. The two could also have mutual admiration, and then
become sexually attracted to each other. This leads into the most rarely reported incest of the four.
Father son incest is rarely reported because

We Must Educate Ourselves Before Passing Laws Restricting...
Biotechnology and genetic engineering involve the cloning of animal cells and organisms, but they
also involve the alteration of an organism in an effort to make it more perfect, whether it is a crop, an
animal, or even a human being. Obviously the cloning of humans or the cloning of human cells is
much different than the cloning of genetically superior livestock or a better quality, higher yielding
food crop, and people throughout the world realize this. The cloning of human beings has become one
of the worst fears in our society today and for that reason many laws have been passed throughout
European countries and North America in an effort to ban human cloning. For most people, it becomes
more of an issue of ethics and moral values ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These experiments were conducted using skin cells from frog embryos and used a method known as
nuclear transplantation, or nuclear transfer. This process utilized a procedure known as enucleation in
which the nucleus of an egg cell is removed and replaced with the nucleus of a parent cell. The new
nucleus in the egg contains the same genetic material as the parent cell, and then, the fertilized egg
becomes an embryo. The nucleus and all genetic material in the egg having been replaced with the
genetic material of the parent cell, would now become an exact replica, or clone of the parent
organism. John Gurdon, a molecular biologist at Oxford University in England, conducted further
research using the method of nuclear transplantation in the 1960 s and 1970 s. In 1966, he was able to
produce adult frogs using nuclei from tadpole intestine cells. Obviously, this proved that any cells,
whether they be skin cells, blood cells, or even cells from an organism s intestinal tract could be used
to create an exact replica of that creature.
In the early 1980s, a much simpler cloning procedure, which is known as artificial twinning, was
developed. In this procedure, the early embryo is split into individual cells or groups of cells, which
happens naturally with twins, triplets, and other multiple births. This obviously allows each new cell
to develop into its own embryo, and then those embryos are

Martha and Mary Magdalene by Caravaggio
The Painting Martha and Mary Magdalene is one of the many masterpieces in the DIA s collection in
Detroit. Although there is much more to understanding a work of art then just looking at it. In order to
understand a piece, you have to understand the Artist, the time period, and the symbols in that painting
that may have very different meaning today.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio better known as simply Caravaggio was an Italian Baroque
master painter born in Italy around 1571. After he apprenticed with a painter in Milan, he moved to
Rome, where he lived for most of his life. His work influenced painters around Europe. He s most
known for his gruesome subjects and use of Tenebrism, which was a technique that used heavy

From prostitute to sibyl to mystic to celibate nun to passive helpmeet to feminist icon to the matriarch
of divinity s secret dynasty. (James Carroll Who is Mary Magdalene ) What we know for sure is that
Mary Magdalene was a former sinner that became a leading figure in Jesus followers. She stayed by
Jesus side, to the end, she visited him at his tomb, and was the first person that Jesus appeared after his
resurrection and the first to preach the Good News of that miracle. During the time period of this
painting Mary Magdalene, a sinner and prostitute, illustrated the very essence of spiritual conversion.
(Ebert Schifferer 63) It s no stretch to say that the painting is meant to show the moment at which
Mary changes her ways, and becomes married to the word of god . The conversion of Mary was a new
concept to Rome, The book Caravaggio: The Artist and His Work claims that this painting is the first
to depict it.
There is no lack of symbolism in Caravaggio s Martha and Mary Magdalene . The painting shows the
contrast between the two sisters even though they are wearing the same colors. Martha is dressed
simply, while Mary is dressed elaborately and provocatively. Mary s fancy dress is said not to be
because of her prostitution, but because of her future loftier spiritual aspiration, in comparison to her
sister Martha. Although the way the two are dressed are far from being the only symbols in this piece.

Selective Writing Style Of The Blind Man
The authors selective writing style is through first person and we are told the story through the
narrator. He is married to his wife, who they are both not given names throughout the story. The wife
has an old friend, who is coming down for a visit due to the tragic event of his wife s passed due to
cancer. Throughout the story, the narrator struggles with insight of different lifestyles, prejudiced
opinions towards the blind man, and attempting to secure a way to adjust his life for a favor his wife
inquired. The narrator will soon realize that be needs to maintain an open mind to other people s
lifestyles and needs to sees struggle through a different perspective. The limited world that the
protagonist lives in is based off a very stereotypical mindset that the authors shows to the audience.
The ignorance that the narrator shows is due to the lack of interaction that he has ever had with people
who suffer from different disabilities; let alone being blind. Some of these limitations that the narrator
had could have been caused by the relationship that his wife and the blind man had. They
communicated by sending tapes to one another. They did this through everything, even after the
narrator s wife attempted suicide from swallowing pills and capsules and washing them down with a
bottle of gin. They had a very strange but powerful relationship. It is blatantly stated throughout the
story that the narrator is not a fan of the blind man. From the start he informed

Use Of Romantic And Identity Crushes In Shakespeare s...
Its clear to see that Shakespeare uses both romantic and identity crushes in the story Romeo and Juliet
but not only did Shakespeare show the different types of crushes but he revealed the danger of neglect
through the main characters parents. He got his audience thinking through his plays. One might
wonder if the parents neglect could have ultimately lead to the star crossed lovers death. The answer to
that would of course be yes and those inactive parents could have done as little as taking their children
s relationships seriously to have saved the doomed teenagers. In the Pickhart article, the author
explains how, Romantic crushes are formed by finding someone whom they find powerfully attractive,
who they feel excited to be around, and

Taking a Look at Horseshoe Crabs
Horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils or evolutionary survivors because the external
appearance barely changed in over 150 million years. The horseshoe crab is part of the arthropods,
which include organisms such as spiders and scorpions. The horseshoe crab is made up of the
prosoma, which is the head, opisthosoma, which represents the central part of the body and the telson,
which is the tail. The tail is harmless and is only used to help the crab flip itself over if it s turned over
on the wrong side. Horseshoe crabs have been researched numerous times. Findings include their,
ancestry, survival, morphological changes (if any) and phylogenetic research among the different
variations of horseshoe crabs. Studies have found information on ancestral species of current
horseshoe crabs. Xiphosurids, which are very old fossils that were not easily found; however, they
were compared in body structure of current time horseshoe crabs and showed that there was hardly
any change in the body structure. The body plan of a xiphosurid is described as having large crescent
like shield in the anterior portion of its body resembling an invertibrate with lateral compound eyes.
Xiphosurids are also classified as having opisthosomal tergites built into a thoracetron and having a
long styliform telson (Rudkin et al. 2008). Ancestry of xiphosurid has so far been researched as a
group of rare Middle Late Palaeozoic fossil arthropods, which are in the group of

There is an urgent need for capital investment and infrastructure financing to address these issues. This requires hundreds of billions of dollars and the active participation of both the policy makers and other stakeholders. Water infrastructure financing comes from several sources, including federal, state, and local sources, and also from private sectors. • 3. This Is Our Life Poem Comparison Both of the poems mentioned that because of science fiction we are seeing the world differently. Instead of seeing the real effects of how we are and what we do we see things to be a fantasy. Seeing how we re not paying attention to the actual surroundings we don t really think about why things happen. We just see things as normal because it s something we don t really think about. In the first poem the opening started out with This is not a fantasy, this is our life. Throughout this poem it mentions that we are the inventors and that we are the people who make the changes with our surroundings. Being in charge of this gives us an important role on the things that we hold together. The second poem just speaks about the negative things about this kind of genre because it denies how things actually are. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But the way that it is told on us it just makes us not see the reality of the things and by that we don t really pay attention on what is occurring. The fact that people want to get rid of the genre is reasonable because it s just like hearing false propaganda. We must be able to see how the things we can cause and not be told we have nothing to do with everything that is around us. It s a bad genre and the way it wants to get removed probably won t have a bad effect on people because then they would need to stop believing the fictional things and start thinking about the things they ... • 4. Analysis Of Still Life Flowers Gloom and Formality: An Analytical Approach to Monnoyer s Still Life: Flowers Still Life: Flowers is a 17th century painting by Jean Baptiste Monnoyer. It is an oil on canvas, and presently resides in the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto. The piece is a traditional still life. It is vertical in its organization; the viewer s eye lands on the bright flowers and scans from top to bottom. There are indicated lines, where the flowers grow upwards and where they drape over the sides of the pedestal. This formation of flowers creates a triangular like shape. At the same time, the draping flowers direct the viewer s eye down to the carved relief sculptures on the ledge, concealed in the shadows and break this triangular formality. The emphasis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The vertically arranged structure of the painting is translated through the indicated line of the growing flowers. This line meets the horizontal line, which is set by the surface holding the flowers; creating a uniform L shaped structure. However, there is some contrast to this traditionality. Only very subtly did Monnoyer stray from this structure; through the draping flowers over the side of the ledge. The formation of the flower arrangement indicates a triangular like shape, which creates a slightly more dynamic focal point. It moves the viewer s eye away from the L structure, to focus on the rich colours found throughout the triangular formation of the floral arrangement. Another line, this line being more subtle yet still diverging the viewer s attention away from the formality of the perpendicular lines, is created by the drapery in the dark background. It is one of the only visible features found in the shadows, and guides the viewer s eye diagonally across the composition and to the vibrant floral arrangement. This oil painting displays great contrast between the lush, intense reds and pinks of the flower arrangement and the shadowy, dark background. There is almost no definite setting, as the background is not visible to the viewer, with the exceptions of the drapery hidden in the shadows and the sculpted pedestal that the flowers sit upon. • 5. The Mentality Of Baseball In Fences By August Wilson August Wilson uses baseball ideology to construct the mindset of his protagonist, Troy Maxson, in Fences ; however, Wilson also uses Troy to embody black America in the 50s. The metaphorical and literal significance of baseball is the driving force Troy s subjectivity and ideology. Whether it be comparing death to baseball pitch, warning his son to not strikeout, or complaining about being stuck on first base, Troy uses baseball to explain life to those around him. Ironically, it is baseball that actually leads to Troy s psychic castration. Although Troy was older when he was released from prison and playing in the Negro leagues, racism held younger players from competing with white Americans and there is no doubt that Troy saw this as what held him back as well. Unable to play in the major leagues bitters Troy s attitude towards life and affects his relationship with his son, Cory, and wife, Rose. While on a micro level, the rules and mechanics of baseball have a negative impact on Troy s mentality, on a macro level Troy s loyalty to the game can be seen as an empowering force for black America in the 50s. The idea of not striking out, and the fetish of the home run is meant to represent the black community s resistance against society s racism during this time. Although the ideology of baseball consumes Troy to the point of his own personal strikeouts, the ideology itself, and who Troy represents, is suppose to represent black America s fight against a racist ... • 6. Enron And Corporate Culture Of Enron Introduction In 1985 The Enron Corporation came into existence after a successful merger between two gas pipeline companies. The company nurtured a very competitive culture, which encouraged employees to win at any means necessary. Enron s culture led employees to cast loyalty and ethics aside in favor of high performance (Ferrell, p. 494). The executives of Enron covered up their increasing debt by using special purpose entities. Meanwhile, Enron continued to report increasing profits to their investors, which led to more investors giving Enron their money. There were many factors that aided Enron in their demise, but the largest was the greed of Enron s executives, the auditors, and the attorneys. The corporate culture of Enron, their auditors bankers and attorneys and their Chief Financial Officer played vital roles in the fall of Enron. How did the corporate culture of Enron contribute to its bankruptcy? In its wake, Enron s CEO, Ken Lay, wanted Enron to be a company which cultivated a culture that allowed employees the opportunity to reach their full potential. Lay wanted to make Enron a company that had high integrity and moral values, but as time progressed Enron became a company which pushed its integrity aside to engage in fraudulent behavior so that the executives could earn more profit (Ferrell, p. 487). • 7. Solon s Use Of Herodotus To Convey The Message Of Croesus Herodotus book has, so far, contained stories that seem to emphasize the moral message of staying humble and not taking things for granted. The stories tend to teach the lesson that if one is too prideful or greedy, fate will intervene and ruin them. This is shown before Croesus is even introduced. One of the first times this message can be seen is when Candaules boasts of his wife s beauty and in turn loses his life for it. Solon s poetry shows that he has similar values as Herodotus. In his poetry, Solon says that he desires wealth, but that he knows that wealth held the wrong way often results in retribution. Solon also writes about how fate is unavoidable and unpredictable, anything could happen whether it s good or bad. Therefore, Solon is a useful character to convey the message about Croesus because Herodotus can use a person in history whose beliefs support his own. Herodotus uses Solon to blatantly state that having more wealth is not everything and to inform Croesus that he should be less greedy and to think about what fate could have in store. ... • 9. The Picture Of Dorian Gray, And The Phantom Of The Beholder There is an old saying that declares: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder . This suggests that beauty is subjective, and lacks a concrete contextualized definition; what is perceived by one individual as attractive, may be, by another, considered unattractive. Regardless of the subjective nature of beauty, society still conforms to beauty ideals, which are propagated and fueled by the media. The beauty ideals that are self imposed by society are problematic because they are unattainable, and galvanize society to reject or promote people based on their outward appearance and hold people s inner beauty in less regard. The imbalance between physical (outward) appearance and inward is a key theme in both The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Phantom of the Opera. In both novels, the main characters are subject to judgment that is overwhelmingly directed at their outward appearance, and we see an over emphasis of the superficial, which ultimately leads to their downfall. Another important thematic element present in both novels is that the main characters have conflicting dual personalities that have changing roles as the story progresses. A contrasting thematic element in both books is the excessive praise that the main character in The Picture of Dorian Gray received, and the excessive criticism that the main character in The Phantom of the Opera received, both leading to negative outcomes, and the characters ultimate demise. For this reason most of the art found from medieval times originated in monasteries and churches. European art during the Middle Ages can be divided into four periods. These four periods include Celto Germanic art which ranged from 400 to 800 A.D. and was important in metal work. Examples of Romanesque sculpture are dated back to the last decade of the eleventh century and then first decades of the twelfth. The primary source of artistic patronage was provided by the monastic institutions, for whom sculptors executed large relief carvings for the decoration of church portals and richly ornate capitals for cloisters (Cleaver 156) Another aspect of the Romanesque revival was the production of metalwork objects, of which many outstanding examples, such as crucifixes, reliquary shrines, and candlesticks, are still preserved in church treasuries. Even though the two countries are connected, Canadians pride themselves on being different from the United States and their standards. Although composed of individuals, a group functions as a separate entity, and it bears the capability to heavily influence the thoughts and actions of its members. This manipulation can alter the perception of the entire group and, as a result, lead to a psychological phenomenon known as groupthink . Research psychologist, Irving Janis, defined groupthink as . . . a deterioration in mental efficiency, reality testing and moral judgments as a result of group pressures (84). • 22. Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease Critical Analysis Introduction Hypertension impacts nearly 25% of the adult population around the world. It is considered one of the foremost risk factors for mortality, and is responsible for 13.5% of all deaths. In addition, half of all strokes and ischemic cardiac disease are triggered from high blood pressure (Pepin et al.2014). According to the newest guidelines, hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 140 or a diastolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 90 (Jin, 2014). Systemic hypertension remains one of the most modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In hypertensive patients, between 12% 27% require at least 3 medications to achieve sufficient control; these patients are considered to have resistant hypertension. Furthermore, those with resistant hypertension have a 50% greater chance of experiencing a cardiovascular event in comparison to those without resistant hypertension, and according to the literature, the numbers of cases are increasing (Martinez Garcia et al. 2013). As of recent, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been recognized as a risk factor in the development of hypertension according to European and US International guidelines (Pepin et al. 2014). Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by the collapse of the upper airway during sleep, consequently ending in intermittent asphyxia. People sceptical of Chinese traditional culture s relevance to modern environmental concerns will point out that ancient Chinese had no term for nature in, as it were, the David Attenborough sense nature as what natural historians study, and what TV nature programmes are programmes about. This does not mean that the Chinese were unable to talk about natural landscapes and wild things, nor that their concept of nature were without implications for our relationship to nature in this sense. It does indicate, though, that the Chinese were not wedded to a wilderness ideal and that they did not emphasis a sharp distinction between the human and nature world. Leisure in the ancient Chinese study will uncover the relationship between ancient Chinese and their relationships with nature. The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys. Being part of the endocrine system, the adrenal glands produce hormones that give instructions to almost every organ and tissue in the body. Analysis Of Nanook Of The North By Robert Faherty Final Paper Early documentaries, like those done by Robert Flaherty have similarities with the Italian neorealism films, especially by those of Vittorio De Sicca. De Sica pulled documentary filming techniques to make his films seem realistic and to almost have a documentary feel to them. Italian neorealism rejected the opulence of Hollywood and instead only wanted to portray real people and their struggles. To do that De Sica borrowed some techniques that made Flaherty s films so successful and seemingly real; like that of the long take, close ups, and unobtrusive editing. This scene occurs when Nanook and his family are working on making the igloo and Nannok goes off to carve a large block of ice, as to act as a window to let in light to the otherwise dark igloo. Examples of the Inuit traversing the arctic plane from a wide angle are meant to impress upon the viewer how impressive the scenery is, and that it is in fact very real and dangerous. Another technique Flaherty used were close ups, which are a shot close to the subject of the scene, either human or object. Thompson s essay, The Face in the Pool: Reflections on the Doppelgänger Motif in The Fall of the House of Usher , and Ki Yoon Jang s essay, Edgar Allan Poe and the Author Fiction: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, both look at works of Poe in order to uncover a deeper understanding of the text. Thompson uses formalist critical methods and Jang uses structuralist critical methods in their essays, both of which are identified by examining each paper for the elements that define their critical method. Thompson and Jang use Poe s works as the topic of their paper, but address it in a different ways. Thompson uses a close reading to demonstrate the inability of humans to know anything with certainty, exploring the layers of complexity within the text that create the ambiguity found in Gothic and supernatural tales. He notes that Poe s images are doubled throughout the text to give the eerie feeling of an internal spiraling into madness. Thompson tracks the physical and mental state of the narrator in the house. The first half is doubled through the second half, but with a quicker decline. In the end, Usher s face is symbolically double with the fallen house to reemphasize the tale s madness. In contrast, Jang s essay argues that Poe is using the relationship between author, narrator, and reader to show its place in the American literary tradition of the sovereign author. What most historians assume is that it was broken into city states with a common ruler, which is the way that Mesopotamia was governed as well. Ms. Gossa s has prior Security Clearance Processing Requests, as such, she would have knowledge that travel outside of the country could have an effect on employment with the USPS. ... • 41. Initial Dose Escalation OIT is accomplished by mixing the allergenic food into a vehicle and ingesting it in gradually increasing doses. Protocols have varied considerably with regard to dosing and the type of food used. Most OIT protocols include an initial dose escalation, followed by a gradual dose build up and a prolonged maintenance phase (Keet and Wood,2014). Initial dose escalation is typically conducted on a single day, beginning with an extremely small dose that is rapidly increased. In the build up phase dose escalations are typically conducted under a physician s supervision every 1 to 2 weeks, with daily home doses in between until the target maintenance dose is achieved. Studies also differ markedly in both the maintenance dose and duration of treatment, with doses ranging from 300 to 4000 mg and durations ranging from months to years. ... This lack of sustained protection has important implications for the future of food immunotherapy and reinforces the experimental nature of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Adam Smith s Economic Philosophy If I was to create the perfect society today, I would use Adam Smith s economic philosophy. Adam Smith is known today as a modern philosopher. In order for a society to prosper, Smith believed that their economy would have to function as a capitalist economy. The perfect, most efficient, society would include specifically Smith s capitalist ideas of the division of labor, the sufficient pay of workers, and would not include the use of slavery. These ideas will make the perfect society prosper. The most important component of having the perfect, most efficient society, would be the division of labor. The division of labor consists of one person doing one small task, another person doing another small task, and other workers continuing the same process until the final product is complete. An example of this would be the use of an assembly line while making pins, as Smith mentions in his book An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Smith explains that the larger pin manufacture he saw with many workers, was more efficient than the small manufacture of only ten employed workers who could make upwards of forty eight thousand pins in a day (Smith, 4). Smith then goes on to explain that, But if they had all wrought separately and independently...in consequence of a proper division and combination of their different operations (Smith, 4 5). Smith is saying that the workers could have made more than forty eight thousand pins in a day if they divided there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Female Labor Force And Sterilization Practices I would like to compare and contrast the subject of the Female Labor Force and Sterilization Practices. As the progressive era began, there are a lot of changes for the women s labor force with respect to politics. They were stronger because they stood up for themselves, refusing to be victims any longer and they did so by way of going on strike and making demands (Dubois Dumenil, 2016). The labor force at this time was 18.3% of women, which when compared to the 2014 statistic of 57%, shows a substantial increase over this period of time ( Women in the Labor Force, n.d.). Wage rates for the women in the early 1900 s continues to be approximately half of what the men earned, as well as there was a division between occupations and business sectors between the sexes so women were not given many options in the labor force. Many single women were limited to working in factories or domestic labor. However, as time progressed, more opportunities such as clerical positions, which were once a male dominated field, began to open for women. This gave them steady wages, clean and safe working conditions but eventually had a similar setting as factories and some were even paid per piece wages. Eventually, by the 1920 s, there were even professional fields opening up for the educated female workforce. This gave women personal independence as they were in positions such as medicine, law and teaching to name a few. However, these professional women would begin to have problems as we ... • 44. Essay about Incest Incest Incest is one of the most interesting taboos of our time. The definition of incest is a highly controversial topic. Yet, the definition of incest is one of the most important definitions for the people involved, though the law s and psychologists meanings are not much the same. Incest needs to be similarly defined for the incestuous parties, both by the law and by psychologists. The definition of incest should be determined by the cases of incest. The people who commit incest, and the types of incest should be considered when making this definition for the law. Why incest occurs has a great deal to do with the people and the types of incest. With the definition dissimilar between the law and psychologists, it is very difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Armstrong, pg 235) If the daughter is seductive, then she might gain power over her father. This is not always true for mother son incest. Mother son incest is usually brought on as a way to highly express love, Asex education quot;, or the mother is promiscuous. If the mother feels like she is expressing her love to her son, then she uses sex as a means of closeness. (Justice, pg 102) There is either no husband or a passive husband. The mother can be very seductive and encourage the son to have sex with her and limits the son s social life. She acts on a Adon t leave me quot; attitude to keep her son tied down. Sometimes the son gets aroused my his mother and then becomes the aggressor. (Justice, pg 103) If he isn t attracted to mom, why not be attracted to his sister? This is the case in brother sister, or sibling incest. It is less traumatic and the guy acts kind of proud about it. The brothers can become violent and force their sister to join in, although usually the sister is willing to participate. (Justice, pg 105) When both of the children are shy, the girl sees him as the only boyfriend she will ever have and becomes flirtatious. The two could also have mutual admiration, and then become sexually attracted to each other. This leads into the most rarely reported incest of the four. • 45. We Must Educate Ourselves Before Passing Laws Restricting... Biotechnology and genetic engineering involve the cloning of animal cells and organisms, but they also involve the alteration of an organism in an effort to make it more perfect, whether it is a crop, an animal, or even a human being. Obviously the cloning of humans or the cloning of human cells is much different than the cloning of genetically superior livestock or a better quality, higher yielding food crop, and people throughout the world realize this. The cloning of human beings has become one of the worst fears in our society today and for that reason many laws have been passed throughout European countries and North America in an effort to ban human cloning. For most people, it becomes more of an issue of ethics and moral values ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These experiments were conducted using skin cells from frog embryos and used a method known as nuclear transplantation, or nuclear transfer. This process utilized a procedure known as enucleation in which the nucleus of an egg cell is removed and replaced with the nucleus of a parent cell. The new nucleus in the egg contains the same genetic material as the parent cell, and then, the fertilized egg becomes an embryo. The nucleus and all genetic material in the egg having been replaced with the genetic material of the parent cell, would now become an exact replica, or clone of the parent organism. John Gurdon, a molecular biologist at Oxford University in England, conducted further research using the method of nuclear transplantation in the 1960 s and 1970 s. In 1966, he was able to produce adult frogs using nuclei from tadpole intestine cells. Obviously, this proved that any cells, whether they be skin cells, blood cells, or even cells from an organism s intestinal tract could be used to create an exact replica of that creature. In the early 1980s, a much simpler cloning procedure, which is known as artificial twinning, was developed. In this procedure, the early embryo is split into individual cells or groups of cells, which happens naturally with twins, triplets, and other multiple births. This obviously allows each new cell to develop into its own embryo, and then those embryos are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Martha and Mary Magdalene by Caravaggio The Painting Martha and Mary Magdalene is one of the many masterpieces in the DIA s collection in Detroit. Although there is much more to understanding a work of art then just looking at it. In order to understand a piece, you have to understand the Artist, the time period, and the symbols in that painting that may have very different meaning today. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio better known as simply Caravaggio was an Italian Baroque master painter born in Italy around 1571. After he apprenticed with a painter in Milan, he moved to Rome, where he lived for most of his life. His work influenced painters around Europe. From prostitute to sibyl to mystic to celibate nun to passive helpmeet to feminist icon to the matriarch of divinity s secret dynasty. (James Carroll Who is Mary Magdalene ) What we know for sure is that Mary Magdalene was a former sinner that became a leading figure in Jesus followers. She stayed by Jesus side, to the end, she visited him at his tomb, and was the first person that Jesus appeared after his resurrection and the first to preach the Good News of that miracle. During the time period of this painting Mary Magdalene, a sinner and prostitute, illustrated the very essence of spiritual conversion. (Ebert Schifferer 63) It s no stretch to say that the painting is meant to show the moment at which Mary changes her ways, and becomes married to the word of god . The conversion of Mary was a new concept to Rome, The book Caravaggio: The Artist and His Work claims that this painting is the first to depict it. There is no lack of symbolism in Caravaggio s Martha and Mary Magdalene . The painting shows the contrast between the two sisters even though they are wearing the same colors. Martha is dressed simply, while Mary is dressed elaborately and provocatively. Mary s fancy dress is said not to be because of her prostitution, but because of her future loftier spiritual aspiration, in comparison to her sister Martha. Although the way the two are dressed are far from being the only symbols in this piece. The use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The limited world that the protagonist lives in is based off a very stereotypical mindset that the authors shows to the audience. The ignorance that the narrator shows is due to the lack of interaction that he has ever had with people who suffer from different disabilities; let alone being blind. Some of these limitations that the narrator had could have been caused by the relationship that his wife and the blind man had. They communicated by sending tapes to one another. They did this through everything, even after the narrator s wife attempted suicide from swallowing pills and capsules and washing them down with a bottle of gin. They had a very strange but powerful relationship. It is blatantly stated throughout the story that the narrator is not a fan of the blind man. From the start he informed ... Its clear to see that Shakespeare uses both romantic and identity crushes in the story Romeo and Juliet but not only did Shakespeare show the different types of crushes but he revealed the danger of neglect through the main characters parents. He got his audience thinking through his plays. One might wonder if the parents neglect could have ultimately lead to the star crossed lovers death. The answer to that would of course be yes and those inactive parents could have done as little as taking their children s relationships seriously to have saved the doomed teenagers. • 49. Taking a Look at Horseshoe Crabs Horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils or evolutionary survivors because the external appearance barely changed in over 150 million years. The horseshoe crab is part of the arthropods, which include organisms such as spiders and scorpions. The horseshoe crab is made up of the prosoma, which is the head, opisthosoma, which represents the central part of the body and the telson, which is the tail. The tail is harmless and is only used to help the crab flip itself over if it s turned over on the wrong side. Horseshoe crabs have been researched numerous times. Findings include their, ancestry, survival, morphological changes (if any) and phylogenetic research among the different variations of horseshoe crabs. Studies have found information on ancestral species of current horseshoe crabs. Xiphosurids, which are very old fossils that were not easily found; however, they were compared in body structure of current time horseshoe crabs and showed that there was hardly any change in the body structure. The body plan of a xiphosurid is described as having large crescent like shield in the anterior portion of its body resembling an invertibrate with lateral compound eyes. Xiphosurids are also classified as having opisthosomal tergites built into a thoracetron and having a long styliform telson (Rudkin et al. 2008). Ancestry of xiphosurid has so far been researched as a group of rare Middle Late Palaeozoic fossil arthropods, which are in the group of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
