Flannery O Conner and the use of grotesque character in...
The representation of the grotesque is a characteristic of much 20th century writing (Holman 61).
Almost all of O Connor s short stories usually end in horrendous, freak fatalities or, at the very
least, a character s emotional devastation. People have categorized O Connor s work as Southern
Gothic(Walters 30). In Many of her short stories, A Good Man Is Hard To Find
for example,
Flannery O Connor creates grotesquecharacters to illustrate the evil in people.
Written in 1953, A Good Man Is Hard To Find is one of O Connor s most known pieces of work
and has received many awards. Throughout the story, you come across many twists and turns
when you least expect it. A Good Man Is Hard To Find is a story which includes religion,... Show

O Connor writes in ways that let us know the characters thoughts without really coming out and
telling us. O Connor often changes the mood of the story very quickly from amusement to horror
and vice versa. In her stories, grotesque is often used to tie together the seriousness and the
comedic situations. Flannery O Connor said of her work, the look of the fiction is going to be
wild... it is almost of necessity going to be violent and comic; because of the discrepancies it seeks
to combine. (Walters 7).
Many had their own opinions of O Connor s work. The literary works of Flannery O Connor
often contend that religious belief can only be consummated by direct confrontation with evil
and for those uncommitted and unprepared, tragedy seems inevitable. (Cook Online). Many of
the early critics never realized that O Connor s worked with revelation, which at the time, others
did not (Reagan Online). As Frederick Asals once said, Conflict, often violent conflict, is the
very center of Flannery O Connor s fiction (93). Although O Connor s work was awarded greatly,
it was also often dismissed because of its Gothic Violence (Reagan Online). I have to agree with
Dorothy Walters when she says, ...nothing is more striking than her remarkable capacity to blend
the comic and the serious in a single view of reality. (13).
O Connor was very successful each

Government Spending On Economic Performance Essay
Abstract
Government spending and its influences on economic growth is a hotly debated issues among
professionals. Policymakers are divided between whether an economy can expand or is stripped of
its potential to grow as government spending increase. Spending on for example infrastructure and
defense are constructive, many economists question that public spending has decreasing marginal
benefits and lead to crowding out of the the private sector. Supporters of larger government spending
claim that government programs offer valuable public goods such as education and infrastructure
which would not work efficiently if they were privately owned. Furthermore, an argument
advocates use is that in government spending can boost economic growth by putting money into
people s pockets. Proponents of smaller government have the opposite view. They argue that
governments which are too big destabilize economic growth by not allocating resources to the most
efficient user and take away from the productive sector of the economy to government. This paper
evaluates the influence of government spending on economic performance. It examines the
theoretical arguments, reviews evidence and highlights the latest academic research.

Bansky s Street Art
Street art is a form of public art that makes use of urban space, usually unsanctioned and in defiance
of typical art values. Although illegal in nature, street art has become increasingly popular within
the past decade, with the spotlight focused on anonymous graffiti artist, Banksy. His unique
stenciling style creates powerful subversive images incorporated into the urban landscape. His art
provokes thought about the content, context and authenticity in regards to both his work and the
art world entirely.
Street art functions as art for the public, meaning it can be enjoyed by the masses as opposed to
just those who make an effort to go to a gallery. This direct interaction with the public is effective
particularly because people s habits have become modified throughout the age of mechanical
reproduction, as explained by Walter Benjamin. Every day the urge grows stronger to get hold of
an object at very close range by way of its likeness, its reproduction (Benjamin). The instant a new
Banksy piece is discovered, the Internet is bombarded with pictures, opinions and the location of
the new art. Through pictures the viewer is still able to evaluate the content, but the context and
the aura of the original are destroyed. A picture of street art is exactly that, a picture, but street art
is an experience that can only have full impact when seen in person. Unfortunately the existence of
new street art can be brief and is often defaced by other vandals. In this case, a

Measuring Academic Procrastination in Australian...
Procrastination is an important individual difference construct that affects many areas of life, from
health care (delaying important medical visits or exercise) to finance (dealing with financial
troubles like credit card debt), to academic arenas. Procrastination, has been defined as the act of
needlessly delaying tasks to the point of experiencing subjective discomfort or putting off that
which is necessary to reach some goal (Lay, 1986, p474). Procrastination has been associated with
maladaptive behaviours and outcomes including anxiety, depression, stress, illness and low self
efficacy (Schouwenburg, 1995; Klassen, 2008). Academic procrastination, a unique form of
procrastination, has had minimal research compared to other psychological constructs. And as far
as the author is aware there has been no research on academic procrastination in the Australian
University context. A reliable scale measuring academic procrastination in Australian undergraduate
students is needed for the purpose of research in to theoretical foundations of academic
procrastination, who procrastinates, the reasons why, the implications, and so as to advance
understanding of this construct. In a meta analytic and theoretical review of procrastination, it was
estimated that between 80 95% of undergraduates experience problematic academic procrastination,
with up to 30% experiencing severe procrastination (Steel, 2007). Considering the effect of
procrastination on the general, work and academic

Descriptive Essay About Disney
Disney
The plane still struck the nerves in my stomach, it felt like 30 knives in my chest and if I made
one slight move, it was going to put a slice in my stomach open. It was the longest plane ride in
my life. When the plane landed, I was mixed with exhaustion, nausea, and excitement. Then all
of a sudden I was walking into this terminal that had trees inside and people were watching you
walk out of the gate way from the airplane. Then we went into this circular object with an LED
light and before I knew it, I was on a train with my family that goes to the bus station. The bus
seemed to take forever to board and leave! People were taking their time to get on a bus that is
only 20 minutes away from Disney and they couldn t just drop the luggage off with the bus
driver who take care of it, but no, they have to help and say Oh please let me do it, many fragile
things in here that I don t want to break ! Well this is a message to the people who do that, if you
don t leave your bag with the bus driver to put into the bottom compartment, they the fragile stuff
isn t the only thing that will break in your general area.
It was the fifth time my family went to Disney, we were still amazed that how one place on earth
can make you the happiest person in the world. There was just something in the air that made you
feel like you could do any wrong and that you didn t have to worry about things that are happening
in the world like wars because the only war you would need to worry

Beez R Us Essay
Growth Strategy
Beez r Us as one of the successful organic honey producer in Australia, it is planning to grow its
brand by increasing the market demand. Firstly, instead of selling raw products to other honey
brand, Beez r Us can sell its branded honey directly to supermarket and food stores within
Australia, therefore, they bring more customers into the market. Secondly, Beez r Us can expend
its brand to overseas, in order to bring customers from new markets. Especially export to China,
which may have a great market opportunity since it has a great population of potential customers.
To do this, Beez r Us need to face the great competition from other honey producers. It is significant
for Beez r Us to develop its distinctive assets to compete with other companies. As an organic
honey producer, Beez r Us has obtained an organic certification for its products. Because of its
unique and natural floral on Kangaroo Island, Beez r Us can produce higher quality honey than
other companies, which can be its core competence. This is a unique asset for Beez r Us, which is

need to buy a bigger size of honey, and people who live alone may need to buy a smaller size.
Moreover, Beez r Us can also develop a category extension. Some of the category extension has
already developed by Beez r Us such as soft toys of bees, honey flavoured ice cream and honey

To An Athlete Dying Young Summary
In every poet, there is a purpose in every poem they compose. In A.E. Housman To an Athlete Dying
Young (rpt. In Greg Johnson and Thomas R. Arp, Perrine s Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense,
12th ed. [Boston: Wadsworth, 2015] 983) Housman shared his philosophy on how an athlete feels
when they grow old into their late seventies. In To an Athlete Dying Young is about an athlete that
dies young. What is surprising is that Housman doesn t spend much time lamenting the young
athlete s death. Instead, he pitches the positive aspects of dying young, which is far from the
typical approach. It concludes that it s okay to let go of the athletic aspect of life.
The poem starts off cheerfully enough, with the speaker remembering when the athlete ... Show

Like death, fame is nothing new, but we never seem to get tired of it. Fame has been around for
as long as there have been people and language. Today, we live in what seems like a fame
obsessed society. The majority of what our social interactions revolves around has to do with fame.
Despite the fact that fame seems so important, most of us don t spend much time considering the
nature of fame and what we are putting such a high value on as individuals and as a society. A.E.
Housman s To an Athlete Dying Young gives us a chance to consider how high of a pedestal we
place fame on. We are challenged with the fact that the author thinks the athlete is a smart lad, or
lucky, for dying young and maintaining his hero status in the public eye. Normally, does fame seem
meaningless when faced with death? As seen in the poem, pride and competition often go hand in
hand. In To an Athlete Dying Young, pride plays an important role. The speaker suggests that, by
dying young, the athlete will never have to suffer the humiliation and wounded pride that comes
along with defeat and eventual weakening athletic ability. The bottom line, better dead than second

The American Dream By John Winthrop
What is the American Dream ? The American Dream has always been characterized by a thriving
job market, opportunities for advancement, stability, etc. It is the pursuit of individual
achievement without consideration for moral or legal restrictions (Angulski, 2013). This idea
dates back as far as 1630 to the puritan colonists. It was first established within a sermon given
by John Winthrop while sailing to Massachusetts. This sermon set into motion the ideals that we
have adapted today enveloping the American Dream . From then on Americans put their faith in
the theory that if you work hard and do the right thing you will manifest your goals and
eventually attain success and comfortability. The dream of the time was to live in a land where
there existed a right to religious freedom and opportunity. This ideal has stuck to this day,
however the validity may is no longer intact. The American Dream is a mere afterthought within
today s society, overtaken by massive debt and loss of opportunity. The American Dream is the
greatest asset we as a country possess, the fact that people from across the world still want to
come to America to fulfill their dreams, to join a society that they see as dynamic, exciting, and
full of potential, is a testament to the great potential of America to improve lives and offer
opportunity for all (Ross, 2016). America is a substantially different world now than it was at the
time of the initial American Dream . The optimism of the

Adam Sandler Essay
It seems you either love him or hate him but there s no avoiding him. Adam Sandler has risen to
the top, and he has his loyal fans to thank for it. While most actors fight their way to the top while
relying mainly on hype, for Sandler this was actually against him. No one thought he would
succeed, but the fans made it happen, carrying him to the top of the box office.
Sandler grew up in Brooklyn, New York and was born on September 9th, 1966. While this probably
doesn t come as a surprise, Adam was the class clown throughout high school. What was surprising
is that Adam never realized how useful his sense of humor would be. He got his start in stand up

Sandler began releasing audio tapes of his comedy routines and they were very successful. His
first, They re all gonna laugh at you! earned a Grammy nomination and spent over 100 weeks on
Billboard charts. Although dismissed by many as tasteless, they were a huge success.
After a series of disappointing big screen roles, Sandler finally had some luck. He co scripted the
movie quot;Billy Madison quot; and starred in it as a young man forced to repeat grades 1
through 12 in six months in order to earn his inheritance. The film was widely accepted and did
fairly well.
Sandler soon quit SNL in order to concentrate on movies. Happy Gilmore provided the break he
needed. A surprise success (due largely to a fight sequence with Bob Barker), the film made people
take notice of Adam Sandler. The Wedding Singer proved that Happy Gilmore was not a fluke, and
The Waterboy shocked even the last people when it opened to the tune of 39 million dollars in its
first weekend.
quot;Big Daddy quot; was Adams next big hit. He started making it even before quot; The
Waterboy quot;. The original title was quot;Guy Gets Kid quot;, but was given a major rewrite
by Tim Herlihy to more fit Adam s strengths. To sum it up, the movie is About Adam Sandler

Phones And Driving
Cell phone use continue to spread like wild fire for many Americans. Cellphones are a part of
everyday life and people depend on them to carry out daily operations and perform numerous
task. Unfortunately, many cell phone operations occur while driving, as a result fatal car
accidents take place daily. Distracted drivers using cell phones has joined alcohol and speeding
as a leading factor in fatal and serious injuries. According to the National Safety Council, cell
phone use is involved in more than a quarter of all vehicle crashes (Newswire, 2017). Parents are
no longer at ease as their teens obtain learners permit and begin driving among millions of
distracted drivers on their cell phone. The situation has heighten over the years to the point of
adults being distracted and driving just as careless as teenagers. It appears like drivers are
ignoring the risk taken by using their cell phones while driving. Major highway changes need to
be made as soon as possible by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The safety of
millions of American motorists should be considered more important than the convenience of
using a cell phone and lawmakers should put a bill in place to completely ban cell phone usage
while driving to limit countless accidents on highways. Despite offering huge benefits, cell phones
have become a grave concern and a major cause of road accidents. Drivers using cell phones are

Iontophoresis In Physical Therapy
Iontophoresis is one of many modalities used in Physical Therapy. The method behind
Iontophoresis was first described in 1747 when two well know scientist, Galvani and Volta put
together the knowledge that electricity can move different metal ions and that movements of ions
can produce electricity. Over time, transdermal administration of drugs has grown and found its
place in modern medicine. Two methods of transdermal administration are passive and active.
Passive administration uses a non ionized drug that passes through the semi permeable membrane
of the skin. Consequently, due to the fact that the skin is semi permeable, only a small amount of
the drug molecules penetrates the skin. In contrast to non ionized drugs, ionized drugs do not
penetrate and generally not considered suitable for transdermal application. However, when
combined with an external source of energy such as a direct low level electrical current, ionized
drug are quite effective at reaching the tissue. The principle behind... Show more content on

The electro osmosis is what produces that bulk of the motion of the solvent that carries ions or
neutral charges with the solvent stream. Many drugs can be delivered via iontophoresis however
in Physical Therapy, two main drugs are used, Dexamethasone and lidocaine. Another drug is
acetic acid. The theory behind the treatment is that the negative polarity of the electrode is used to
promote the penetration of the negatively charged Dexamethasone phosphate ion through the
skin. In contrast, a positive charge promotes penetration of the lidocaine ions through the skin.
For iontophoresis, the drug delivery electrode should have the same polarity as the polarity as
the active ion of the drug being delivered. In addition, the drug being delivered should be ionized

The Novel The Expedition Of Humphry Clinker By Tobias...
The epistolary novel, a novel that is written entirely in the form of letters, first gained traction in
the early 18th century. Two epistolary novels that encapsulated this style very well were
Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both
of these authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what
they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite the divide that separates them in genre,
both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey
their characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works.
We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few
reasons why Laclos letters provided a sense of importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was
not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective
(Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published
in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his
work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in
France. French literature in general did not implore this style; they usually followed a more
traditionalist model when it came to the novel. He was also the first French author to employ letters
that were not designed solely for reporting events.

The Death Penalty

English 112
Mr. Johnson
November 23, 2015
The death penalty is a permitted by law deprivation of life as a criminal punishment. This issue have
been of a great importance throughout centuries parallel to the existence of states. Massive wave of
failures of the death penalty use occurred only in the 90th of the last century. In 1991, from the 180
countries present on the map the death penalty was abolished only in 60. Nevertheless, the official
abolishment of the legislation referring to the execution and the end of its practical use in most
countries differed over time, and in the majority of the most European countries this kind of
punishment has not been carried out more than a century. In Western countries, there is no
unanimous opinion on the appropriateness of the death penalty expense. Government, the
legislature of the European countries took the decision to abolish the death penalty, without relying
on public opinion and on the basis of civilizational and religious principles.
Kvashis (1999) evidences that the world community is moving steadily toward a world without
death penalty (p.78). Now the death penalty is used mostly in Muslim countries, traditions of
which, in addition to what is meant punishment for a range of offenses that are not considered in

A Common Motif Of Mutual Death Essay
We are all the same, no one is better no one is less. We are all struggling to survive; be kind. That
s the rhetoric my parents so heavily ingrained in my mind. I was raised to take this passive
ideology and grow my life out of well intended passivism. Same became the degradation of
different; Struggles became insignificant and rooted in the pretense that everyone faces the same
challenges. So, I went through the motions stagnant and unmoved. Racismbecame unreal,
unfathomable and unlogical. I looked at St. Louis, my home, without truly seeing the deep
existence of division the deep truth of what it really holds. Like the Van Boucle painting, a
common motif of mutual death can be seen in the life of my home town. His strokes paint dead
turkeys all vaguely touching each other, as they are set up in different positions. Some are further
away from others, but all are at least a part of a pair. Like this image, the oil spills into blood and
death touches us all; linking our existence; linking the streets of St. Louis.

Reason For European Imperialism
Imperialism, a policy in which one country seeks authority over another country by economic and
political domination. The Europeans at this time in history, were looking for resources and
something to help them show their national pride; the best way to do that was to imperialize
different countries. Africa, which was not industrialized, was seen as not capable to lead
themselves into modernization. The europeans as well as many other countries began to seek land
in the divided, war filled country. The reasons for europeans seeking imperialismis because of the
strive for natural resources, the need to show national pride, and thoughts upon racism.

An empire such as Britain requires an imperial race (Primrose). People from all over saw how
different people and cultures came from all over the world which create hate and a variety of
disapproval for others. African people were seen as hated, uncivilized people only because, they
had so many different cultures and different ways of living. If Africa was to be industrialized
before other countries came it would have been seen as a land that is respected because the
people who live in it are capable of industrialization. But because the land was not industrialized
before imperialism racism became a strong attacking point upon the uncivilized. France went with
a fully developed race into territories marked by barbarism and people who cannot develop their
own land (Merlin). France in this description sees themselves as superior to the Africans because,
they do not have fighting within their country and they are industrialized. Without their ability to
come together as a country and grow an economy France would be another Africa. Racism drove
France to come to Africa and show their superiority over them. Racism was a large reason for
imperialism.
Africa was a resource rich, divided, different country. Every country that took a part in Africa s
imperialism saw this matter and took advantage. If Africa had time to figure out how to develop an
economy, unify with each other, and industrialize itself; imperialism from other countries would

Examples Of Bram Stoker As A Perverted Christ Figure In...
Dracula as a Perverted Christ Figure In Bram Stoker s novel, Dracula, is presented as a perverted
Christ figure because he imitates multiple actions of Christianity, and perverts those ideas. An
example of how Dracula is a perverted Christ figure would be when Dracula forces Mina to drink
his blood, he tries to mimic the Christian Communion, like when Christ gave up his blood for us. In
the novel Draculaalso takes the lives of numerous people, just two of them being Renfield, and
the mother looking for her child. Dracula also has the ability to transform into different figures,
for example a bat and a wolf. God is also has the ability to do this, but Dracula uses this power to

wolves. Monster, give me back my child!...there was no cry from the woman, and the howling of

Theseus And Phaedr The Value Of Family Loyalty
The value of family loyalty is important in any given society whether it s from 800 B.C. to 2016,
granted not all families work together the family members that show loyalty to one another tend to
be set up for admiration. All these different relationships are what makes a family, whether it s the
loyalty between Theseus and Phaedra or you re Theseus cursing his son into exile. The Athenian
hero Theseus, took part in many adventures and so many enterprises. He helps the Argives after the
War of the Seven against Thebes, when the Thebans refused to allow the defeated to bury their
dead, he helps Oedipusand his daughters, and prevents Hercules from killing himself after his
insanity. Theseus fights the Amazons twice, once attacking them, once defending their attack on
Athens and marries their queen,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though that wasn t showing loyalty to his own son he was showing loyalty to his wife. I
believe that this would still apply to today s society or at least should apply. There are so many
stories of women not being believed when they share their story of rape which is awful. Like any
good human should, one would hope that the woman s story is the side taken and the offender sent
into exile.
Another example of Theseus showing his loyalty is to his father when he goes on his quest to find
him. It s pretty uncommon for a child to want to go find their father after he abandoned him his
whole life. But he understands the importance of loyalty to his family. This commonly relates to
kids that grow up without a parent or parents that choose to go and find them, despite the
abandonment.
The lesson to be learned in these mythology myths is no matter what is thrown at your family, it is
important to keep loyalty in mind, any family can take this lesson into account to keep a strong

Mario Milkuliencer s Trouble With Trust
Trust can be a controversial topic for many, however the natural positive vibe that humans receive
from the word tends to override any reservations of it. According to the online Merriam Webster
Dictionary, trust requires assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or
something. In today s society trustis slowly starting to disintegrate with the lack of face to face
communication within the age of electronic communication. Because of this we have the inability
to trust others as it starts to develop into trust issues, especially among the younger generation from
the lack of physical connection among individuals. The first foundation that comes with developing
trust is reliability. Possessing reliability in someone or something is important to begin a
relationship. According, to Mario Milkuliencer in the online article Trouble With Trust by
Psychology Today there are three basic foundations. The first one is to have the assumption that if
you need a help you can turn to someone you trust. The second foundation is to have an assumption

Character Analysis Of Holden Caulfield In The Catcher In...
Friendships are like goals; they are easy to make but difficult to keep. J.D Salinger s character
Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye is a lonesome sixteen year old. Salinger s novel
follows the story of Holden as he tries to rescue children s innocence from being lost to the
crippling world of adulthood. Although he perceives his friends as fake, Holden tries to flatter
his roommate Stradlater and old friend Sally Hayes into becoming a person like Jane Gallagher:
someone that will listen to him. Ward Stradlater is Holden s smug roommate at Pencey Prep.
Conceited yet friendly, Holden often dismisses his roommate s phoniness because Stradlater is
capable of having a little intelligent conversation with Holden. While tap dancing, Holden jokes,
I m the goddamn Governor s son (Salinger, 34). Stradlater laughs, proving that he can understand
Holden s unique sense of humor. Only around Stradlater, Mr. Antolini and Phoebe, does Holden
ever expose his aloof side, as he knows that they will be able to appreciate Holden s wit.
Contrarily, Holden reigns a superior attitude over those he does not think are intelligent, such as
his next door neighbor, Robert Ackley. However, the approachable behavior Stradlater exhibits
causes Holden to seek more of his attention. For instance, he decides to write Stradlater s English
composition. Before agreeing to the task, a shocked Holden marvels, I m the one that s flunking
out of the goddamn place, and you re asking me to write you a goddamn composition (Salinger,
32). Afterwards, Holden asks Stradlater about what he should write his assignment on; this
indicates that Holden does not care if he writes Stradlater a faulty paper, he just wants to charm
him. Moreover, Holden later wonders, I wished I knew who d swiped my gloves at Pencey,
because my hands were freezing (Salinger, 99). Evidently, Holden does not appreciate lending his
clothes or doing anyone favors, yet he is incredibly generous with Stradlater. Holden gives
Stradlater his hound s tooth jacket despite knowing that Stradlater will stretch it and then even
writes his English composition. Satisfying Stradlater gains Holden his roommate s company, as a

Global Supply Chain
Abstract
The supply chain is a concept resulting from multiple independent entities that affect each other.
This paper will discuss about Wal Mart supply chain it will provide the six component, problems
and approaches to solve the problems. Wal Mart is one of the major retail in the world (Walmart
2011). Wal Mart is continuously developing its business by developing its services and product
portfolio. The supply chain of Wal Mart is also effective to enhance its effectiveness within the
industry (Hoppenstedt Rathkolb 2005).
Introduction
Wal Mart is the largest multinational company in the retail industry (Cullen and Parboteeah, 2008).

Wal Mart emphasizes on customer demands and determination of customer s satisfaction in
determining places for its stores. Identification of customer demand helps to determine the locations
for store and production facilities close to the consumers (Wal Mart 2011). The selection of
inappropriate locations in other region without considering income level and living standard of the
customers may create problem for Wal Mart in location selection. The analysis of macro and micro
environment before selecting location would be effective to increase the supply chain management
of the organization (Lambert 2008).
Transportation:
Transportation is intimately related to inventory decisions and also with the customer requirements
(Bolstorff Rosenbaum 2007). Wal Mart uses stores to offer its products to the customers and by its
own trucks for delivery (Wal Mart 2011). The use of store and its own truck for transportation may
create problem as strike by the employees may affect the delivery of its goods to the customers that
would affect its market share and customer base. To eliminate this problem, management of Wal
Mart could make arrangement with external transportation companies that will be used in the
situation of strike (Bolstorff Rosenbaum 2007).
Information:
Information is an important component of the supply chain of an organization as it includes
collection of information from end users and to link them with resources

James Joyce s A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man
The popularity of the coming of age novel in the Twentieth and the Twenty First Centuries reveals
a deepening understanding of the impact of childhood and adolescent experiences in the long term
development of adulthood. Such is the case of James Joyce s A portrait of the Artist as a Young
Man, which explores the lasting impact of Steven Dedalus boyhood and teenage years on his
destiny as an artist. The majority of the novel centres on these early years and draws upon the
conventions of the Bildungsroman. The narrativelargely is driven by impressionistic and sensory
language which initially focuses on Steven s encounters with the world but eventually turns
inwards to focus on his emotional development and understanding of himself.... Show more content

Furthermore Joyce s purpose is further revealed through his protagonist s view of the artist.
Steven expresses the view of the role of the artist as an individual who chooses to isolate
themselves; through the strict focalisation and the stream of consciousness the reader is able to
experience Steven s isolation and the development of his artistic expression (Belanger xxiv).
However, as a result of this isolation we are given limited insight into the way Steven is
perceived by others. One of the only descriptions given is from his rival at Belvedere, Heron. He
says, Dedalus is model youth. He doesn t smoke and doesn t go to bazaars and he doesn t flirt
and he doesn t damn anything and damn all. (Joyce 57). The repetition of doesn t implies that
Steven is reluctant to participate in the world around him, that in fact he does isolate himself from
others and to an extent becomes an observer of life. Ultimately, Joyce does not prioritise the
perception of Steven by others, choosing to focus on Steven s perception of himself.
The novel opens with the story of the baby tuckoo, which Steven realises is him, He was baby
tuckoo. The moocow came down the road where Betty Byrne lived (Joyce 3). This short tale
becomes a microcosm the entire novel and sets the tone for a narrative of self discovery and
realisation (Belanger ix). Following

Watada s Obligation
Though I cannot definitively say why Watada refused to deploy to Iraq, I can give ideas he
possibly contemplated in his mind. Watada likely viewed the deployment as illegal because he
thought the US did not have ad bellum issues which warranted war. Iraq had not violated our
nation s territorial integrity; they did invade Kuwait, but they had been pushed back onto their
territory. We invaded Iraq out of suspicion that they were constructing weapons of mass
destruction, but this was purely suspicion. Suspicion does not warrant a just cause because we are
not attacked in any sense. Despite this, our government viewed it as a just cause because of Iraq s

Themes Of Ireland In A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift
Ireland has a dreadful history of poverty, greed and an unfair treatment by the English. The rich
become richer and the poor become poorer is a cry heard throughout the whole civilized world
(Schiller, 1795). The poorest people of Ireland suffer extremely hard lives and no one seems to
care or even want to help. The middle class and the political Irish people only interests lie in
making themselves wealthier. The English had no intentions in helping these people so the poor
people were treated atrociously. This way of living was the Irish way of life in the 16th century

His themes range from inertia to the suffering poor people. Inertia is the resistance to any physical
modification, and Swift conception was anything but this. Swift s sole purpose in writing this
pamphlet in a satire method was to get people talking and doing something about these problems
as it would trigger a nerve in his readers. His satiric shots are assorted in with factual details that
highlight the rich citizens lack of action; But I am not in the least pain upon that matter because
it is very well known that they are every day dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and
vermin, as fast as can be reasonably expected (Swift, 1726). When he wrote about the suffering
people, he called out the landlords and how they mistreated their tenants. He has no time for
these people and even goes as far as comparing them to Egyptian slave drivers; Secondly, the
poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own which by law may be made liable to
distress and help to pay their landlord s rent, their corn and cattle being already seized, and money
a thing unknown (The Project Gutenberg EBook, 2015). His characters also have an important role
in his pamphlet and why this literature piece is still important to students these days, one example
is the children. They play a significant role in the pamphlet, but they aren t the luckiest characters
in A Modest Proposal . Swift uses linguistic to dehumanize the children entirely. He doesn t view
them as living, breathing beings, but considered them to be tomorrow s leftover lunch; I do
therefore humbly offer it to public consideration that of the hundred and twenty thousand children

However, does it happen in our civilisation? Practically, it does not. The rich, and influential
always find a way to manipulate the justice system and get away with their sins. The solicitors
defend the clients for their money not because they are right or did not sin, and the judges
justification for a judgment depends on their moods and politics not the real purpose of the law.
Ecolism has no racism or favouritism, places the right people in the right places based on their
merits, not colour, status, gender, or race.
Ecolism is the Eco society for the future of humanity, the right to live free but responsible, the right
to live secure, self sufficient and cared for from birth till death.
Ecolism does not believe in prison sentences or punishment but believes in removing the root
causes of failure. Reform or re educate those who fail, to re introduce them as reformed members
of the Eco society.
The Ecolist does not ask, how can I get more? But, how can I give more to the world. I have what I

Why Do Batteries Lose Voltage Output
Data Analysis Batteries lose voltage when used. The scientific question for this experiment was,
Which type of battery affects the voltage output over time? Five different batteries were tested to
see which battery would have the biggest drop. The hypothesis for this experiment was, If the type
of battery is tested to see which battery type would have the largest voltage drop, then the Alkaline
battery would have the largest voltage drop. The independent variable was the type of battery and
the dependent variable was the voltage drop. Some constant variables were the size of the battery,
having a fully charged battery, and the amount of time between checking the voltage (10 minutes).
The control group was the alkaline battery because

Benjamin Franklin, the Father of Foreign Diplomacy Essay
Some people will argue that the true birth of United States of America started with George
Washington leading the Continental Army against Great Britain s royal army in pursuit of freedom
from foreign dictatorship; seizing the opportunity to create and control their own government in the
manner in which they sought fit. One of the major forces in this battle for freedom was the
diplomatic travels of Benjamin Franklin. His travels to England and France set the foundation for
the dealings in foreign diplomacy that are still in effect today. Without Benjamin Franklin s
wisdom, knowledge and courage to address Kings and Parliament on the behalf of the colonies, the
American government, as we know it would not exist.

Upon his return to the colonies he was elected as the unofficial ambassador to England, and this
became a duty that he carried out for many years to come.
Over the next decade, hostilities grew between the colonies and England. Benjamin Franklin spent
his time as a delegate between the two lands and argued many of the colonies grievances toward
Britain s mistreatment. In 1765 at the age of 59, Franklin addressed Parliament regarding the
Quartering Bill, which allowed forceful housing of British soldiers in the homes of the Americans.
He argued on behalf of the colonies and Parliament amended the bill making the act illegal. During
this same year, Parliament passed the Stamp Act as a way of acquiring more money from the
colonies. This is where many of Benjamin Franklin s diplomatic duties began.
Franklin was called to testify in front of Parliment,
A questioner asked: Considering the resolutions of Parliament as to the right, do you think, if the
stamp act is repealed, that the North Americans will be satisfied?
Franklin responded: I think the resolutions of right will gibe them very little concern, if they are
never attempted to be carried into practice.
A adversary asked: If the stamp act should be repealed, would it induce the assemblies of America
to acknowledge the rights of Parliament to tax them, and would they erase their resolutions [of

ABSTRACT Fast advances in the wireless technology and the intensive penetration of cell phones
have motivated banks to spend large budget on building mobile banking systems, but the adoption
rate of mobile banking is still underused than expected. Therefore, research to enrich current
knowledge about what affects individuals to use mobile banking is required. Consequently, this

[2011] pointed out that main customer segments of mobile and Internet banking were not
necessarily the same, which might explain why Sadi et al. [2010] distinguished mobile commerce
from other electronic commerce.

Journal of Electronic Commerce Research, VOL 13, NO 2, 2012
Therefore, compared to huge online banking studies and relative few research available to help
banks understand the adoption of mobile banking [Suoranta Mattila 2003; Laukkanen Pasanen
2008; Puschel et al. 2010], more studies to investigate what influences people to adopt mobile
banking are necessary and demanded. Given that the chance of success in introducing a new
product or service is highly related to the depth of understanding of what influences consumers to
adopt this new product or service, this study employed the unified theory of acceptance and use of
technology (UTAUT) with age and gender as moderating effects to elaborately investigate what
affecting individuals to adopt mobile banking. The findings culled from this research can help
banks execute intricate marketing campaigns and customize service options to cater to specific
customer segments in the context of electronic banking. 2. Literature Review Literature reveals that
abundant research on electronic banking has focused on Internet banking (also called online
banking), whereas research focusing on mobile banking is relative little and receives underrated
attention [Suorantia Mattila 2004; Laukkanen Pasanen

also us. In addition, they can cause diseases in animals and also in people. Therefore, you must
prevent them from proliferating in your home. Know the best remedies to eliminate fleas and ticks
naturally.
Where can my dog catch ticks and fleas?
The tick is an external parasite (ectoparasite) of the family of arachnid mites. Its size and colour
vary according to its species. Ticks are, along with fleas, the most common external parasites in
the can. Small in size they measure a few millimeters and with eight legs, they feed on the blood
of the affected animal. When they reach their body, these parasites of the spider family cling to the

Russia, India, China, Mexico, and South Korea are commonly referred to as the Big Six ( B6 ) by
global management consulting firm Accenture, as they are the leading developing economies.
Earlier, owing to their low cost structures, the developing economies served as mere outsourcing
locations for the MultiNational Companies (MNCs) of the West. However, the changing global
economic scenario had brought down trade and investment barriers and integrated global supply
chains, thereby paving the way for the development of emerging markets. Some of the developing
countries were witnessing rapid growth and thus the nomenclature Rapidly Developing Economies
(RDEs) was assigned to them. The term Rapidly Developing Economies was used to denote
emerging markets such as China, India, Mexico, Brazil,
Russia, South Africa, Poland, Indonesia, Turkey, and South Korea.
Moreover, the importance of the emerging markets to the global economy came into sharp focus as
the world came out of the global economic recession. Experts said that the importance of emerging
economies to world trade had been steadily increasing. Between
1990 and 20 I0, the annual growth rate of exports and imports from emerging and developing
economies averaged around 7.5% compared to the figure of around 5% for developed economies.4
It was reported that the share of the RDEs in global trade was growing significantly. Notably,

small engine that could be easily get fitted into the paddle bicycle. But the drawback of that was it

World War I was the first time the motorcycle had been adopted for combat service. The U.S.
military purchased over 15,000 motorcycles from Harley Davidson during World War I. Harleys

incorporate the features of BMW s side valve and shaft driven R71, which Harley did successfully.
By 1920, Harley Davidson was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, with 28,189
machines produced, and dealers in 67 countries.
The Great Depression began a few months after the introduction of their 45 cubic inch model.
Harley Davidson s sales fell from 21,000 in 1929 to 3,703 in 1933. Despite this, Harley Davidson
unveiled a new lineup for 1934. In order to survive the remainder of the Depression, the company
manufactured industrial powerplants based on their motorcycle engines. They also designed and
built a three wheeled delivery vehicle called the Servi Car, which remained in production until 1973.
Present situation Presently Harley Davidson is doing what it does the best and the strategy is same
since 1987. Harley Davidson has maintained a unique position in US motorcycle market. They are

thought processes are diagnosed primarily when people with Schizophrenia are put under pressure
and make them feel anxious. Schizophrenia in a person is not always just one of the four types. It
can be a mixture of two types of Schizophrenia, where a patient will have symptoms which are
representative of both types of Schizophrenia. A patient is more likely to have the two types of
Schizophrenia in the early phase, compared to the later phases. In some cases, individuals may have
a certain type of Schizophrenia along with another mental disease. In such cases, the patient has the
symptoms common to both the diseases. People who have a type of Schizophrenia along with
another mental illness are given the name patients with the schizo affective type of Schizophrenia

  • 2. Flannery O Conner and the use of grotesque character in... The representation of the grotesque is a characteristic of much 20th century writing (Holman 61). Almost all of O Connor s short stories usually end in horrendous, freak fatalities or, at the very least, a character s emotional devastation. People have categorized O Connor s work as Southern Gothic(Walters 30). In Many of her short stories, A Good Man Is Hard To Find for example, Flannery O Connor creates grotesquecharacters to illustrate the evil in people. Written in 1953, A Good Man Is Hard To Find is one of O Connor s most known pieces of work and has received many awards. Throughout the story, you come across many twists and turns when you least expect it. A Good Man Is Hard To Find is a story which includes religion,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... O Connor writes in ways that let us know the characters thoughts without really coming out and telling us. O Connor often changes the mood of the story very quickly from amusement to horror and vice versa. In her stories, grotesque is often used to tie together the seriousness and the comedic situations. Flannery O Connor said of her work, the look of the fiction is going to be wild... it is almost of necessity going to be violent and comic; because of the discrepancies it seeks to combine. (Walters 7). Many had their own opinions of O Connor s work. The literary works of Flannery O Connor often contend that religious belief can only be consummated by direct confrontation with evil and for those uncommitted and unprepared, tragedy seems inevitable. (Cook Online). Many of the early critics never realized that O Connor s worked with revelation, which at the time, others did not (Reagan Online). As Frederick Asals once said, Conflict, often violent conflict, is the very center of Flannery O Connor s fiction (93). Although O Connor s work was awarded greatly, it was also often dismissed because of its Gothic Violence (Reagan Online). I have to agree with Dorothy Walters when she says, ...nothing is more striking than her remarkable capacity to blend the comic and the serious in a single view of reality. (13). • 3. Government Spending On Economic Performance Essay Abstract Government spending and its influences on economic growth is a hotly debated issues among professionals. Policymakers are divided between whether an economy can expand or is stripped of its potential to grow as government spending increase. Spending on for example infrastructure and defense are constructive, many economists question that public spending has decreasing marginal benefits and lead to crowding out of the the private sector. Supporters of larger government spending claim that government programs offer valuable public goods such as education and infrastructure which would not work efficiently if they were privately owned. Furthermore, an argument advocates use is that in government spending can boost economic growth by putting money into people s pockets. Proponents of smaller government have the opposite view. They argue that governments which are too big destabilize economic growth by not allocating resources to the most efficient user and take away from the productive sector of the economy to government. This paper evaluates the influence of government spending on economic performance. It examines the theoretical arguments, reviews evidence and highlights the latest academic research. • 4. Bansky s Street Art Street art is a form of public art that makes use of urban space, usually unsanctioned and in defiance of typical art values. Although illegal in nature, street art has become increasingly popular within the past decade, with the spotlight focused on anonymous graffiti artist, Banksy. His unique stenciling style creates powerful subversive images incorporated into the urban landscape. His art provokes thought about the content, context and authenticity in regards to both his work and the art world entirely. Street art functions as art for the public, meaning it can be enjoyed by the masses as opposed to just those who make an effort to go to a gallery. This direct interaction with the public is effective particularly because people s habits have become modified throughout the age of mechanical reproduction, as explained by Walter Benjamin. Every day the urge grows stronger to get hold of an object at very close range by way of its likeness, its reproduction (Benjamin). The instant a new Banksy piece is discovered, the Internet is bombarded with pictures, opinions and the location of the new art. Through pictures the viewer is still able to evaluate the content, but the context and the aura of the original are destroyed. A picture of street art is exactly that, a picture, but street art is an experience that can only have full impact when seen in person. Unfortunately the existence of new street art can be brief and is often defaced by other vandals. In this case, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Measuring Academic Procrastination in Australian... Procrastination is an important individual difference construct that affects many areas of life, from health care (delaying important medical visits or exercise) to finance (dealing with financial troubles like credit card debt), to academic arenas. Procrastination, has been defined as the act of needlessly delaying tasks to the point of experiencing subjective discomfort or putting off that which is necessary to reach some goal (Lay, 1986, p474). Procrastination has been associated with maladaptive behaviours and outcomes including anxiety, depression, stress, illness and low self efficacy (Schouwenburg, 1995; Klassen, 2008). Academic procrastination, a unique form of procrastination, has had minimal research compared to other psychological constructs. And as far as the author is aware there has been no research on academic procrastination in the Australian University context. A reliable scale measuring academic procrastination in Australian undergraduate students is needed for the purpose of research in to theoretical foundations of academic procrastination, who procrastinates, the reasons why, the implications, and so as to advance understanding of this construct. In a meta analytic and theoretical review of procrastination, it was estimated that between 80 95% of undergraduates experience problematic academic procrastination, with up to 30% experiencing severe procrastination (Steel, 2007). • 6. Descriptive Essay About Disney Disney The plane still struck the nerves in my stomach, it felt like 30 knives in my chest and if I made one slight move, it was going to put a slice in my stomach open. It was the longest plane ride in my life. When the plane landed, I was mixed with exhaustion, nausea, and excitement. Then all of a sudden I was walking into this terminal that had trees inside and people were watching you walk out of the gate way from the airplane. Then we went into this circular object with an LED light and before I knew it, I was on a train with my family that goes to the bus station. The bus seemed to take forever to board and leave! People were taking their time to get on a bus that is only 20 minutes away from Disney and they couldn t just drop the luggage off with the bus driver who take care of it, but no, they have to help and say Oh please let me do it, many fragile things in here that I don t want to break ! Well this is a message to the people who do that, if you don t leave your bag with the bus driver to put into the bottom compartment, they the fragile stuff isn t the only thing that will break in your general area. It was the fifth time my family went to Disney, we were still amazed that how one place on earth can make you the happiest person in the world. Arp, Perrine s Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 12th ed. [Boston: Wadsworth, 2015] 983) Housman shared his philosophy on how an athlete feels when they grow old into their late seventies. In To an Athlete Dying Young is about an athlete that dies young. What is surprising is that Housman doesn t spend much time lamenting the young athlete s death. Instead, he pitches the positive aspects of dying young, which is far from the typical approach. It concludes that it s okay to let go of the athletic aspect of life. The poem starts off cheerfully enough, with the speaker remembering when the athlete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like death, fame is nothing new, but we never seem to get tired of it. Fame has been around for as long as there have been people and language. Today, we live in what seems like a fame obsessed society. The majority of what our social interactions revolves around has to do with fame. Despite the fact that fame seems so important, most of us don t spend much time considering the nature of fame and what we are putting such a high value on as individuals and as a society. A.E. Housman s To an Athlete Dying Young gives us a chance to consider how high of a pedestal we place fame on. We are challenged with the fact that the author thinks the athlete is a smart lad, or lucky, for dying young and maintaining his hero status in the public eye. Normally, does fame seem meaningless when faced with death? As seen in the poem, pride and competition often go hand in hand. In To an Athlete Dying Young, pride plays an important role. The speaker suggests that, by dying young, the athlete will never have to suffer the humiliation and wounded pride that comes along with defeat and eventual weakening athletic ability. • 10. The American Dream By John Winthrop What is the American Dream ? The American Dream has always been characterized by a thriving job market, opportunities for advancement, stability, etc. It is the pursuit of individual achievement without consideration for moral or legal restrictions (Angulski, 2013). This idea dates back as far as 1630 to the puritan colonists. It was first established within a sermon given by John Winthrop while sailing to Massachusetts. This sermon set into motion the ideals that we have adapted today enveloping the American Dream . From then on Americans put their faith in the theory that if you work hard and do the right thing you will manifest your goals and eventually attain success and comfortability. The dream of the time was to live in a land where there existed a right to religious freedom and opportunity. This ideal has stuck to this day, however the validity may is no longer intact. The American Dream is a mere afterthought within today s society, overtaken by massive debt and loss of opportunity. The American Dream is the greatest asset we as a country possess, the fact that people from across the world still want to come to America to fulfill their dreams, to join a society that they see as dynamic, exciting, and full of potential, is a testament to the great potential of America to improve lives and offer opportunity for all (Ross, 2016). • 15. Iontophoresis In Physical Therapy Iontophoresis is one of many modalities used in Physical Therapy. The method behind Iontophoresis was first described in 1747 when two well know scientist, Galvani and Volta put together the knowledge that electricity can move different metal ions and that movements of ions can produce electricity. Over time, transdermal administration of drugs has grown and found its place in modern medicine. Two methods of transdermal administration are passive and active. Passive administration uses a non ionized drug that passes through the semi permeable membrane of the skin. Consequently, due to the fact that the skin is semi permeable, only a small amount of the drug molecules penetrates the skin. In contrast to non ionized drugs, ionized drugs do not penetrate and generally not considered suitable for transdermal application. • 17. The Novel The Expedition Of Humphry Clinker By Tobias... The epistolary novel, a novel that is written entirely in the form of letters, first gained traction in the early 18th century. Two epistolary novels that encapsulated this style very well were Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both of these authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite the divide that separates them in genre, both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey their characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works. We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few reasons why Laclos letters provided a sense of importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective (Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in France. French literature in general did not implore this style; they usually followed a more traditionalist model when it came to the novel. An empire such as Britain requires an imperial race (Primrose). People from all over saw how different people and cultures came from all over the world which create hate and a variety of disapproval for others. African people were seen as hated, uncivilized people only because, they had so many different cultures and different ways of living. If Africa was to be industrialized before other countries came it would have been seen as a land that is respected because the people who live in it are capable of industrialization. But because the land was not industrialized before imperialism racism became a strong attacking point upon the uncivilized. France went with a fully developed race into territories marked by barbarism and people who cannot develop their own land (Merlin). France in this description sees themselves as superior to the Africans because, they do not have fighting within their country and they are industrialized. Without their ability to come together as a country and grow an economy France would be another Africa. Racism drove France to come to Africa and show their superiority over them. Racism was a large reason for imperialism. Africa was a resource rich, divided, different country. Every country that took a part in Africa s imperialism saw this matter and took advantage. • 27. Character Analysis Of Holden Caulfield In The Catcher In... Friendships are like goals; they are easy to make but difficult to keep. J.D Salinger s character Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye is a lonesome sixteen year old. Salinger s novel follows the story of Holden as he tries to rescue children s innocence from being lost to the crippling world of adulthood. Although he perceives his friends as fake, Holden tries to flatter his roommate Stradlater and old friend Sally Hayes into becoming a person like Jane Gallagher: someone that will listen to him. Ward Stradlater is Holden s smug roommate at Pencey Prep. Conceited yet friendly, Holden often dismisses his roommate s phoniness because Stradlater is capable of having a little intelligent conversation with Holden. While tap dancing, Holden jokes, I m the goddamn Governor s son (Salinger, 34). Stradlater laughs, proving that he can understand Holden s unique sense of humor. Only around Stradlater, Mr. Antolini and Phoebe, does Holden ever expose his aloof side, as he knows that they will be able to appreciate Holden s wit. Contrarily, Holden reigns a superior attitude over those he does not think are intelligent, such as his next door neighbor, Robert Ackley. However, the approachable behavior Stradlater exhibits causes Holden to seek more of his attention. For instance, he decides to write Stradlater s English composition. Before agreeing to the task, a shocked Holden marvels, I m the one that s flunking out of the goddamn place, and you re asking me to write you a goddamn composition (Salinger, 32). Afterwards, Holden asks Stradlater about what he should write his assignment on; this indicates that Holden does not care if he writes Stradlater a faulty paper, he just wants to charm him. Moreover, Holden later wonders, I wished I knew who d swiped my gloves at Pencey, because my hands were freezing (Salinger, 99). Evidently, Holden does not appreciate lending his clothes or doing anyone favors, yet he is incredibly generous with Stradlater. James Joyce s A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man The popularity of the coming of age novel in the Twentieth and the Twenty First Centuries reveals a deepening understanding of the impact of childhood and adolescent experiences in the long term development of adulthood. Such is the case of James Joyce s A portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which explores the lasting impact of Steven Dedalus boyhood and teenage years on his destiny as an artist. The majority of the novel centres on these early years and draws upon the conventions of the Bildungsroman. The narrativelargely is driven by impressionistic and sensory language which initially focuses on Steven s encounters with the world but eventually turns inwards to focus on his emotional development and understanding of himself.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore Joyce s purpose is further revealed through his protagonist s view of the artist. Steven expresses the view of the role of the artist as an individual who chooses to isolate themselves; through the strict focalisation and the stream of consciousness the reader is able to experience Steven s isolation and the development of his artistic expression (Belanger xxiv). However, as a result of this isolation we are given limited insight into the way Steven is perceived by others. One of the only descriptions given is from his rival at Belvedere, Heron. He says, Dedalus is model youth. He doesn t smoke and doesn t go to bazaars and he doesn t flirt and he doesn t damn anything and damn all. (Joyce 57). The repetition of doesn t implies that Steven is reluctant to participate in the world around him, that in fact he does isolate himself from others and to an extent becomes an observer of life. Ultimately, Joyce does not prioritise the perception of Steven by others, choosing to focus on Steven s perception of himself. The novel opens with the story of the baby tuckoo, which Steven realises is him, He was baby tuckoo. The moocow came down the road where Betty Byrne lived (Joyce 3). This short tale becomes a microcosm the entire novel and sets the tone for a narrative of self discovery and realisation (Belanger ix). Following ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His satiric shots are assorted in with factual details that highlight the rich citizens lack of action; But I am not in the least pain upon that matter because it is very well known that they are every day dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and vermin, as fast as can be reasonably expected (Swift, 1726). When he wrote about the suffering people, he called out the landlords and how they mistreated their tenants. He has no time for these people and even goes as far as comparing them to Egyptian slave drivers; Secondly, the poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own which by law may be made liable to distress and help to pay their landlord s rent, their corn and cattle being already seized, and money a thing unknown (The Project Gutenberg EBook, 2015). Benjamin Franklin, the Father of Foreign Diplomacy Essay Some people will argue that the true birth of United States of America started with George Washington leading the Continental Army against Great Britain s royal army in pursuit of freedom from foreign dictatorship; seizing the opportunity to create and control their own government in the manner in which they sought fit. One of the major forces in this battle for freedom was the diplomatic travels of Benjamin Franklin. Franklin responded: I think the resolutions of right will gibe them very little concern, if they are never attempted to be carried into practice. A adversary asked: If the stamp act should be repealed, would it induce the assemblies of America to acknowledge the rights of Parliament to tax them, and would they erase their resolutions [of ...
