On Aug. 9, 2014, two unarmed teenagers were walking the streets of Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis.
The names of the two unarmed teenagers were Michael Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson. All of
sudden a police officer named Darren Wilson rushes towards them in his police car and begins to tell
them to get on the ground. The boys had committed no crime and were only one mile from their
destination, they were simply trying to get home and off the streets. Things escalated and the officer
pulled out his gun and told them that he would shoot them. As he was saying these words the officer
pulled the trigger and shot Michael Brown. Both of the boys started sprinting away from Officer
Wilson. The officer continued to pursue Michael Brown and then the unthinkable happened. Dorian
Johnson says in an interview, He shot again, and once my friend felt that shot, he turned around and he
put his hands in the air and he started to get down, but the officer still approached with his weapon
drawn, and he fired several more shots . Michael Brown was shot dead. The shooting immediately
caused riots around the community of Ferguson for weeks. This story is one of the many examples of
what is called biased based policing. The officer chose to do what he did because of his racial bias.
Not all biased based policing is sparked by racial bias but it is one of the bigger issues. The main issue

development. The human nervous system starts to develop at around day eighteen after conception
(Carlson, 2014, p. 55). The brain stem is vital to instinctive functions, such as reflexes, breathing, and
heart rate (Urban Child Institute , 2016). These are functions in the body that just happen without
thinking about doing anything. The cerebrum is a large portion of the brain, which connects the
cerebellum to the brain stem (Urban Child Institute , 2016). This part of the brain is where complex
processes like memory and learning take place. The exterior of the cerebrum is the cerebral cortex,
this part is not fully developed until adulthood and this is where sophisticated activities, such as

While Southwestern boasts itself as an extremely progressive, liberal institution. The university does
meet many of the requirements to call itself these things it s staff is not very diverse. In just the year
2015 Southwestern granted tenure to the first black male in its history Dr. Reggie Byron. Dr. Bryon
became one of just five males of color tenured at Southwestern out of 91 tenured faculty. This
represents that the faculty at Southwestern University strongly under represents racial minorities in its
tenured staff. This lack of diversity exemplifies a structure of privilege at Southwestern that
disproportionately furthers the interests of white students and professors and excludes racial minorities
from the same experiences. First, the possible causes for this lack of diversity must be shown as to
expose this structure of privilege here at Southwestern. One factor that plays a major role in the hiring
of racial minorities especially at positions thought of as very professional, which professors fall under
is how society defines professionalism. The way we visual the word professional in American society

Rock Canyon in Utah
Rock Canyon is an excellent site for geologic research and has been investigated by geologists from
around Utah and neighboring states. With outstanding extrusions of quartzite, tillite and limestone, it s
a favored destination for hikers, rock climbers and scientists. The quartzite is considered the most
unique feature of Rock Canyon as it s one of the few clear and distinct examples of the sedimentary
processes involved with a shallow marine setting. The tillite beneath the quartzite draws attention to
the ancient glaciers to the past. In conjunction with the active Wasatch Fault found at its doorstep,
Rock Canyon is an important place in Utah for geologists. To begin, the mouth of the canyon features
a hilly landscape with scars from landslides created from the uplifting of land by the Wasatch Fault.
The fault, responsible for the creation of the Wasatch Mountains 25 million years ago, is a normal
fault (Eldredge, 2014). Unlike some faults, vertical movement of the terrain is limited and slippage
only occurs every several hundred or thousand years. Signs of the fault at work can be seen through
the mouth of the canyon with the orange Tintic Quartzite which is dated back to the Cambrian Age.
Layered beneath the quartzite is tillite from the Precambrian Age. To the west and separate from the
Quartzite and tillite by the Wasatch Vault are limestone sections from the Missippian Age. (Rigby,
