Hmax Model Paper
Final Project: Research about HMAX model
Seok Hee Lee
Abstract In this paper, I investigated some of the models of computational neuroscience used in the
face recognition field. The model to be discussed is HMAX model. The paper contains what HMAX
model is, how it is derived in terms of biological background, and how it is being used for facial
recognition. Also, I simulated the simplified version of the model in MATLAB. The simulation of the
simplified version verified one cell in the highest hierarchy covers the entire retinal space of the given
image. INTRODUCTION First of all, I looked into the paper written by Riesenhuber and how HMAX
model is derived from a biological concept of a visual cortex. It begins with the power of cells found
in macaque inferotemporal cortex (IT). The cells in IT are considered as essential cells for recognizing
an object and IT is the highest area in the ventral visual stream. They are tuned to views of
complicated objects, for instance a face of human. Their response remains almost the same when scale
or position of an object changes, and it is one of the characteristic of these cells. This raises a question:
how can these cells distinguish similar faces? In the other words, this paper talks what mechanism
these cells use to respond differently from the similar inputs. This question is related to the model
proposed by Hubel and Wiesel. In this model, simple cells with neighboring receptive fields feed into
higher hierarchy cell and this

Geographic Disparity In Medical Care
Humans are one of the most vulnerable species that walk the earth. Their simple bodies are susceptible
to almost every type of bacterial or viral disease which could cause death in a matter of hours. From
the earliest nomadic tribes of humans, there has been a need for medical care. Whether the need for
healing comes from man s simple mistakes or from man s rivalry with nature, medicine and simple
bandages are some parts of the necessity to heal. The one advantage that humans have over all other
animal apexes in the world is man s ability to create. This ability gave humans modern technology and
medical care that is capable of curing almost every disease or disability known. Although this
technology is known, it is not always accessible to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the only two reasons that a person cannot receive said treatment is because there is no trained
professional that is capable of giving the treatment. The geographic disparity exists most The figures
are stark: the average density of dentists to head of population in Africa is 1 to 150,000; in
industrialized countries, the average is 1 to 5,000 ( High Risk 1). There is no shortage of capable
dentists in the world; there is only a shortage of capable dentists in the places that need them most.
The problem continues to escalate as fewer dentists want to open general practices in the most
desolate places in Africa. The problem escalates as the ...duties which traditionally have been
performed by assisting personnel are now being carried out by the dentists themselves ( WHO 2). This
fact only makes the problem of the lack of dentists worse. The few dentists there are in an area, some
of them have to help the others because there are not any capable people of helping the dentists, thus
slowing the process even further. The problems continue to snowball as Health care in rural areas can
suffer due to lack of expertise and trained professionals. Moreover, excessive workloads and long
working hours for the remaining staff can lead to demoralization, burnout, and decline in the quality of
care (Parkash 3). Due to the shortage of capable dentists in rural areas and the massive

Competitive Characters In The Odyssey
My goal of competing in a 5k is like odysseus s journey home because I am training very hard and
sometimes I plateau and even have to backtrack to see progress to where finally I will achieve my
ultimate goal. There are assertive characters in The Odyssey that stand out to me and represent my
training and the hard road it is. The characters I chose were Athena, the Cyclops, the Lotus Eaters and
Odysseus. These characters imitate my training because they all serve as a symbol for each part of
practicing for the 5k. Athena, Athena is a very important character in the book The Odyssey because
she is Odysseus s coach to get him back to his wife and son at home. My Athena as a part of my
guidance is probably my mom or my brother. My mom is essential as to getting the food I need to stay
healthy and to increase my performance as well as keep encouraging me to do my absolute best. My
brother is more of the trainer to where he pushes me to the limits and advises on what to do what not
to do and things like that. Either way they both find a way to keep me on track to reach my goal of
competing in and completing a 5k. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

you kinda know what to eat and what not eat to stay lean and healthy to increase your overall

Analysis Of The Book The Hobbit
The Hobbit, a novel by J.R.R Tolkien, was a prequel to The Lord of the Rings series. The Hobbit is
also an adventure story that follows the classic, hero s journey. The protagonist of the novel, Bilbo, is
much like the European explorers in the Age of Exploration during the 15th Century. For example,
Christopher Columbus was widely regarded as a hero during his time. Columbus was a Spanish
explorer that is known for discovering the Americas. In 1492, Columbus set sail west in hopes of
discovering a new route to the Indies, instead he found America. Like Bilbo, Columbus was an
ordinary person who went on an adventure, faced challenges, and in the end, became a hero.
Previously, a hero s journey was mentioned. The pattern that heroes go through in their journey was
discovered by writer Joseph Campbell. Campbell studied many adventure stories and noticed a pattern
that all of the heroes went through. He said that the journey they take happens in seven phases. These
stages take the hero out of the environment they are in, give them conflicts, make them face a big
challenge, sends them home, and finally the hero shares their gift to their society. This cycle is
demonstrated in many adventure stories and movies. In fact, many authors study Campbell s work
when they are writing stories. Bilbo goes through this hero s journey and this is shown when he goes
through stage one and two, four, and five. First, Bilbo goes through stage one and two of the hero s
journey. Stage one and

What Does Freedom Mean To You Essay
Abraham Lincoln said, Freedom is not the right to do what we want, but what we ought, we dare to do
our duty as we understand it. Freedom is the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement
or under physical restraint according to the dictionary. Freedom means the soldiers fighting in wars to
have our states remain free. Freedom means to have rights. Freedom means that I can freely say my
opinions. A symbol of freedom is the Statue of Liberty.
The first type of freedom I am going to talk about is the soldiers fighting in war for us to remain free.
The United States soldiers are a very important part of freedom to me. The soldiers give their lives to
keep us free. The U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marines are all part of our protection.
The next type of freedom I will talk about is to have rights and liberty in our government. We help
make our laws, and the right to do what we want to do. The laws we want to make we send to our state
capital. If they think the law or laws are good enough or think they ... Show more content on

We get to vote for our presidents, our governor, our mayor, and many other people. We also get to vote
where to put new building, if we should take down buildings, and to choose what laws we should have
and not have.
A symbol of freedom is the Statue of Liberty. She holds a torch and tablet upon which is inscribed the
date of the American Declaration of Independence. Liberty Island is federal property within the
territory of the state of New York, even though it is closer to New Jersey. The statues full name is
Liberty Enlightening the World. The statue was to be a symbol of welcome for all immigrants coming
to America, as well as a universal symbol of freedom.
In this essay I have talked about three forms and one symbol of freedom. The three forms of freedom
are the soldiers, the rights and liberty, to state my opinions freely. The symbol is the Statue of Liberty.

Genesis 24
A protagonist is the character that drives the action of the plot. In Genesis 24, the main character who
drives the plot of the story is Abraham s servant, who has been given the job to find a suitable wife for
Isaac. The entire story of Genesis 24 is revolved around the job of the servant and him being divinely
introduced to Rebekah, the wife Abraham said to find. Abraham provides specific instructions for his
servant in his task to find Isaac a wife; therefore, the action of the story moves from Abraham, which
most of this part of Genesis is about, to Abraham s servant. The servant finding Rebekah is a
fulfillment of God s promise to Abraham of many descendants given a couple chapters before in
Genesis. Additionally, the previous chapter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If Rebekah were the main character of the story, the story would have told of her actions before the
servant notices her. The writer of the story made sure to frame Rebekah as a secondary character
because she is only found because of the directions given to the servant. As mentioned before,
Rebekah responded to the servant s request just as he was told the proper wife would. In addition,
Rebekah is part of the house of [the servant s] master s kin (Genesis 24:27). The servant is the one
who asked that Rebekah come right away even though her family objected the notion, which was part
of the servant s initial directions (Genesis 24:56). Rebekah is the embodiment of the woman Abraham
described to the servant. Being the embodiment means being the outcome of the story, not the
protagonist. Also, even when Rebekah has been chosen by the servant, the wedding of Rebekah and
Isaac does not take up a large part of the chapter. Genesis 24:67 proclaims that Then Isaac brought her
into his mother Sarah s tent... and she became his wife . This act of marriage seems to be an
afterthought because the servant followed the directions of Abraham, so Isaac knew she was divinely
meant to be his wife. The largest part of the chapter was still the servant trying to find the wife for
Isaac. If Rebekah were the protagonist, a stronger emphasis would have been placed on this act of
marriage between Rebekah and

Mozambique Is A Poor Country Essay
Introduction
Mozambique is a poor country located in South eastern Africa, having a population of 25, 303, 113 it
suffers the risk of food insecurity. Food security is when all people at all times have physical and
economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food, that meets dietary requirements for a healthy
lifestyle. Mozambique has a high level of food insecurity, like many other countries in Africa, putting
individuals, families and communities at risk. Some major factors in Mozambique that affect its food
security are poor agriculture, the occurrence of natural disasters, and the presence of diseases
particularly HIV and AIDS. Along with many other minor contributors such as food prices, urban
migration, and pollution of surface and coastal waters.
Background
Mozambique is one of the world s poorest countries, sitting on the east coast of Africa bordering the
Mozambique Channel, it has neighbouring countries, South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania. Its current
population is 25, 303, 113 with the capital city Maputo having a population of 1, 191, 613. Out of this
massive population, 64% of people are food insecure, consuming 2,112 kilocalories per Capita per
day.
In Mozambique, 52% of the country is below the poverty line with the average life expectancy rate
being 52.18 years for males and 53.72 years for females. Out of this population, only 58.8% of people
over 15 can read and write, while a large 39.4% of people are unemployed. Children are also affected

Supply Chain Management at Airbus
Supply Chain Management At Airbus Implementing RFID Technology
INTRODUCTION
Airbus was the world s leading aircraft manufacturer in 2009 going by the number of aircraft
delivered during the year. The company had been using RFID in its operations since 1997 but on a
lower scale and targeted at improving its internal processes. In mid 2000s, Airbus started using RFID
technology more widely, starting with its spare parts supply chain. After sucessful pilot tests, Airbus
came out with the ambitious plan of adopting a holistic approach by implementing RFID at its
suppliers facilities, in its own operations, and at its customers operations in 2008. The plan was to
achieve higher efficiencies in its operations and also to reduce costs. The ... Show more content on

Within the Sourcing domain, potential suppliers were identified in a transparent manner, as they

The BuySide domain allowed purchasing managers in Airbus to select products to be purchased from
an electronic standardized catalogue and send the product list for approval from the concerned

products are not on the catalogue, quotations from suppliers are requested. It created automation

The eSupplyChain domain. Covered the entire supply chain right from forecasting product needs,
generating purchase orders, receiving and storing goods, conduct quality checks, and invoicing.

Pros And Cons Of Caging Hens
Caging hens is unacceptable and a barbaric way of keeping animals. In New Zealand, 80% of hens are
currently suffering in battery cages, living an unnatural lifestyle. This inhumane way of farming has to
stop as it s detrimental to the rights of hens and all animals to live and be treated without cruelty and I
believe it is simply unjust. Not only are these defenseless Hens killed, they are also denied the right to
move and walk, are arguably tortured and will never spread their wings. The ban of battery cages
needs to take a stronger stance as the phasing out of battery cages by 2022 serves only to make way
for colony cages which are just as cruel. Colony cages fail to meet the welfare of Hens and don t
provide them with the sufficient space they need. They re illegal ... Show more content on

I believe that the cost is well worth it because the welfare of animals is very important. The raise in
egg and poultry prices will have an impact on families all over New Zealand unless the government
subsidises the abolishment of battery farming and colony cages. If the government continues to keep
the prices the same as they are now while making NZ farms free range it will be a win/win situations
for both the welfare of animals and humans. The change in egg prices may not be as drastic for Kiwi
families as I have found there is just a mere $0.24 difference between a single size 7 factory farmed
egg and free range eggs at countdown. Is a couple of dollars per dozen eggs really worth the
exploitation of hens? Caged eggs may be cheaper but it comes at the expense of Animal welfare. New
Zealand needs to abolish not only battery cages but colony cages also. The effects these farming
methods have on hens is undeniably disgusting and needs to be stopped. In order for us to ensure
farmers are treating their hens ethically, routinely checks and stricter rules need to be

Dent V West Virginia
One of the most important decisions an individual can make is the type of occupation they choose.
Instead of being merely an economic necessity, an occupation is a reflection of an individual s
personality. For example, a more artistically inclined individual may choose an occupation that
requires creativity, such as hair dressing. Despite this, the government has a way of making it difficult
for people to follow their passions. Occupational licensing laws are the way the government does this.
These laws are government issued permits given once certain educational standards are met. Though,
having the freedom to choose the occupation that you want is not in the constitution, it is seen,
however, as a substantive right. Barriers to employment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
West Virginia is the constitutionality of a law requiring those specializing in medicine to attend
medical school (482). The Court upheld the constitutionality of the law, stating that it serves a
legitimate state interest to protect the public from fraud and other deceptive practices (482). Though,
the Court found this specific law constitutional, they emphasize that similar kind of laws are invalid
when [regulations] have no relation to such calling or profession . . . they can operate to deprive one
of his right to pursue a lawful vocation (482). San Francisco, California had a law that required those
who owned a wooden building and used it as a storefront for a laundry business to obtain a permit
from the board of supervisors. The board of supervisors were given great discretion in how they
granted permits under the law (482). The Court, in Yick Wo v. Hopkins, held that the law was
unconstitutional based on its discriminatory nature; Chinese owners of laundries were the victims of
this state sanctioned discriminatory, since they were usually denied permits when they applied (482).
Nebbia v. New York is the case that marks the beginning of the Court s constitutional deference to
state governments in regard to law and regulations that inhibit employment (482). This difference is
otherwise known as the rational basis test, which gives states great leeway to adopt whatever
economic policy [that] may reasonably be deemed to promote public welfare, in so far as the laws
passed are seen to have a reasonable relation to a proper legislative purpose, and are neither arbitrary
nor discriminatory

The Target Market of JetBlue and Southwest Airlines
The economy class is targeted at the leisure travel segment and the low cost business travel segment.
Contrast JetBlue and Southwest Airlines in terms of the following two aspects:
1. Compare and explain the impact of key external factors on each company (e.g., economic
conditions and the growing consumer interest in leisure travel).
The key external factors like the growth in the economy, disposable income, and fuel prices have
negatively affected JetBlue. It was compelled to change its strategy several times and in 2011 had an
income of $86 million down from $97 million in 2010. The growing consumer interest in leisure
travel has positively affected JetBlue. The success of JetBlue has been attributed to growing consumer
interest in leisure travel.
The economic factors like slow economic growth, low disposable income, and fluctuation in the price
of oil have been responsible for weak performance of Southwest Airlines. There are no adverse
political effects. Southwest Airlines has been positively affected by the increase in consumer interest
in leisure travel. The leisure segment is an important segment for low cost airlines. The net income has
declined from $459 million in 2010 to $178 million in 2011.
JetBlue Airways has been affected by key external factors. The political factor that has affected
JetBlue is the resentment towards union formation. Currently, JetBlue is a non union company. This
helps it keep its fixed costs low. Further, there are positive

Spiritual Reflection
I have been into the practicum for over a month now. It is beneficial for me to reflect on my learning
and practice in the past few weeks in the areas of class reading and teaching, triads, meeting with
directees in sessions and supervision. My class reading and teaching in the last few weeks provide me
with a solid idea about spiritual direction. My understanding is that in the spiritual direction session,
the director is to listen to on an ongoing conversation between the directee and God. The Holy Spirit
has already been working in the life of directee before the session and will continue to be at work after
the session is over. The emphasis of spiritual direction will be to enhance the relationship between the
directee and God. In a spiritual direction session, typical questions asked are Where is God in this? or
Where has God gone and why don t I sense any divine presence at all? I learn to know that spiritual
direction arises out of inviting and listening to God. One thing I am in tension with myself and need to
be reminded constantly is that I should not have the attitude or expectation to resolve the issue
mentioned in the session. The focus of the session should be about what goes on between the directee
and God. The triad experiences help me to put my learning into practice and they build my confidence
in carrying out sessions. Those questions raised in the triads on reflecting the experience of spiritual
direction help me to be aware of my

Fire Department Memo
The purpose of this memo is to discuss how I would improve my fire department, shift, working group
with the use of the management/leadership guidelines provided.
Summary
This memo will also review the pros of each guideline to change the department. The use of the
guideline can drastically change the success rate of how this fire department operates.
Discussion
There are 8 guidelines for management/ leadership which are participation, communication,
competence, satisfaction, reviews, coordination, norms, and goals. There are a variety of different
ways by using these guidelines that can improve this fire department. Such as, participation which can
greatly impact the outcome and service that this department provides. Also, participation can
encourage the crews to work together as a team to fulfill the mission statement that the department has
created. In fact, using participation to benefit the employees is a tremendous way to show the
community that your department is taking part of everything they can possibly handle, from
community events to a higher level of training to provide extra ... Show more content on

Without communication it will be nearly impossible for employees to complete the other 7 guidelines

be by doing team building exercises. Communication is one of the top priorities of operating an
effective fire department. A simple training exercise can enhance each firefighter skill in
communicating, employees can always benefit from this no matter what age they are or how many
years they have been in the fire service. Next, reviewing items are important in the fire service
because this career is always changing and improving. Reviewing not only shows the department what
needs to be worked on, but it also demonstrated how well each employee, shift and the fire house

specifically looks at how people recall the speed, vehicles were travelling at when involved in road
traffic accidents. The paper spoke in brief about other evidence to support their Hypothesis, this was

was the question around the speed the vehicles were travelling at when the collision occurred. The
results showed that subjects interrogated with Smashed give a mean speed of 10.46mph and those
with hit a mean of 8.00 mph which evidenced a significantly different result. One week later the
participants were invited back and interrogated as to whether they saw glass in the accident to which
there was none. The expectation was that the participants who had initially been questioned with the
Verb Smashed would be more likely to give a Yes result. Furthermore, when participants where asked
whether there was glass in the accident the results supported the expectation. With over double the
participants who received the verb smashed responding yes in comparison to the participants
questioned with hit. The results supported the Hypotheses, and the idea that we as humans have one

self and secondly information gained about the event that we gain afterwards. Experiment 1 comprised

Darwinism And Survival In White Fang, By Jack London
White Fang, written by Jack London, is a wonderful adventure novel that vividly depicts the life of a
wolf by the name of White Fang. Throughout the course of the novel, White Fang goes through
numerous learning experiences as he interacts with humans and other wolves from Alaska around the
turn of the century. Jack London uses the events that transpire during White Fang s life to illustrate
that only the cunning, intelligent, and strong will be able to survive. The ideas of Darwinism and
survival are reinforced by almost every action that takes place in the novel. Man is shown defeating
nature through superior intelligence, a wolf cub conquers his puppy hood, and a young wolf survives
despite the hardships placed upon him by man.

This concept of survival is reinforced as White Fang has his first encounter with man. His first instinct
is to attack when he sees his half wolf half dog mother recaptured by Indians, and he acts on this
instinct. The rocks thrown by the Indians, however, remind him that he is a mere pup fighting against
gods. Because of his intelligence, White Fang knows when to submit in order to keep his life. All of
his actions are predicated on the need to live.
White Fang spends the majority of his early life in retreat, but this quickly changes. He soon grows
into a savage and voluminous beast as a direct result of his persecution and mistreatment by human
and dog alike. The concept of eat or be eaten has been so perfectly been ingrained into his system, that
he loses any speck of compassion or kindness that was ever in him and becomes a terrible killing
machine. Whenever he sees he has the advantage over another living thing, he exploits it and drops the
creature dead in its tracks.
White Fang s reign of terror, however, only lasts until he encounters a stronger and more formidable
foe. Weedon Scott, a mining expert during the gold rush, narrowly saves him from the jaws of a
pitbull and teaches him one final lesson. This is that

What Role Did Locomotives Play In The Civil War
Jake Bohling
The Role of Locomotives in the Civil War
What was the role of locomotives during The United States of America s Civil War? There are many
things that locomotive did during the United States of America s civil war. First, locomotives were
used to transport people. Locomotives were also used to transport other resources, such as weapons
and food. Next, locomotives could be used very strategically, and cause confusion among enemies.
I chose the topic locomotives affects on the United States of America s Civil War because I have been

Locomotives could transport thousands of troops to there destination in a very quick manner.. For
example, Herman Haught rendered a strategy that was used at Gettysburg to transport the wounded.
Herman Haught s strategy was very effective in moving wounded soldiers. Two thousand to four
thousand injured troops at a time. Another, fantastic example is during the first Battle of Manassas
when the Confederates sent reinforcement troops with a locomotive causing a victory over the Union.
Another example, is the Battle of Chickamauga when President Abraham Lincoln sent twenty
thousand reinforcement troops in just eleven days from Washington, D.C. to Georgia. Locomotive
were used for transporting the wounded and reinforcements during the United States of America s
civil war, but locomotives were also extremely effective at transporting resources such as guns, horses,
food, and anything needed.
Next, Locomotives were used for transporting food, weapons, horses ,and many more things during
the United States of America s Civil War. Trains Could effectively carry large quantities of weapons at
a time. Locomotives could hold people on board to defend the large amounts of weapons, since
locomotives were so large. Trains would get their resources from a supply depot and then bring the
resources to troops located along the railroad track. Although, carrying weapons by rail is extremely
effective, it had multiple disadvantages. One disadvantage is that enemies

COMPARING ARTISTIC PERIODS
The Renaissance period was from roughly the 14th century to the 17th century of the common era
(CE) beginning in Italy later spreading throughout Europe. The word Renaissance comes from the
original Italian word Rinascimento or rinascere which means to be reborn according to Harper (2012).
The influence of the Renaissance movement can be observed in art, music, science, religion, politics,
philosophy, literature, as well as other areas of intellectual inquiry. The Renaissance brought about a

Another characteristic of this period is the lack of distinct or realistic perspective in renderings.
Michelangelo was one of the first artist who pioneered the Mannerism at the Laurentian Library in
Florence Italy according to Britannica (2012). One such painting that employed the Mannerism
characteristics such as eroticism and obscure imagery is the Madonna with the Long Neck painted by
Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, also known as Parmigianino (Artble, 2012). In 1520 the
humanistic model of the classical Renaissance such as the serenity, beauty, and order began to break
down as a negative world view began to emerge due to machinations and wars of Spain, France, and
the Holy Roman Empire. (Ozarks, 2012)
Both paintings represent the Madonna (the Virgin Mary) with the baby Jesus on her lap. In the
previous painting, the arch vault and throne on which the mother is seated is stylized very realistically
along with the saints surrounding them are all in proportion to themselves and to each other. In the
later painting the pose of the Madonna is elongated and exaggerated, the baby in the later painting is
quite large and the angels in the picture are crammed to one side with a prophet on the opposite which
is very small not coming up to the Madonna s knee.

Capssaicin Research Paper
Capsaicin is a chemical that is found in chili peppers which causes the heat when you eat spicy foods.
In order to detect the capsaicin that is found in the foods that you eat, your body has receptors on
sensory neurons. The receptors are known as capsaicin receptors and found in the dendrites of the
sensory neurons better known as nociceptors. (Caterina) When your body receives that feeling of pain
or heat, it is due to capsaicin receptor recognizing capsaicin, but also the ability of the capsaicin
receptor to act as an ion channel, which is found in a category known as the transient receptor
potential channels. (Fox) Capsaicin will stimulate and excite the capsaicin receptor. When the receptor
is excited it allows the entrance of Calcium (Ca+2) and Sodium (Na+). (Fox) When the calcium and

Gatsby Essay- the Pursued, Pursuing Busy and Tired
There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired To what extent does this sum up the
novel?
In The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald made all his characters with four predominate behaviours; the
pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired . Some may fall under only one of these groups, where
as the others may belong in all of them. This is not only a good summary of the novel but also of
people s life in general during the 1920s. Throughout the novel, there are characters who are being

However, those are extreme cases and will not likely to occur, therefore it is mostly the pursuers that
are eventful and exhausted. This is best represented by George, who spent his whole life in an effort to
achieve success, however in the end was unable to do so. As result he is only left with a run down
garage and living an exhausted life. When Myrtle, the love of George s life and probably the last thing
holding him together was killed, George was left with nothing despair. For this George was
determined to pursue for the avenge his wife and Gatsby became pursued for revenge. In the due
course, George kills Gatsby and ends his own life as well. Moreover, even Tom who was achieve
almost everything he desired, was eventually tired of his life, and decided to chase after Myrtle which
made him busy once again. Thus, the pursued may be troubled at times, but for the most part it is the
pursuing that suffers.
In contrast to other characters, Nick seemed exempt from being either pursued or pursuing. Being the
narrator of the novel, Nick is very voyeuristic and passive. Therefore instead of being caught up in
everyone else s business, he was very analytical, which provided him with experience for good
decision making. Therefore Nick wasn t an exhausted, nor a very busy man, however it is evident that

Leningrad Cemetery Winter Of 1941 Analysis
Sharon Olds, in her poem Leningrad Cemetery, Winter of 1941 , portrays the dreary and dire effects of
war. As one of the most destructive and longest sieges of history had just begun, the countless bodies
scarred the citizens of Leningrad. In order to convey horror, hopelessness, and death, Olds utilizes
simile extensively, corrupting images with typically hopeful connotation. As corpses permeate the
graveyard, the ability sustain life itself comes into question; Olds warps the significance of the tree to
argue that life is no longer sustainable. Due to the lack of enough wood for coffins, the disposal of
corpses exemplify desperation and require inhumane treatment. The sheer number of corpses

The Human Body s Defense System
The immune system is our body s defense system it is vital to our body s health and survival. We need
the immune system to fight off bacteria, viruses, and other foreign, harmful substances as well as our
own cells that have become bad or even cancerous. There are several building blocks that make up the
system as a whole, each just as important as the next, that work hand in hand. This includes the
lymphatic system, biological molecules, antibodies, white blood cells, the tonsils, thymus, bone
marrow, and the spleen. The tonsils and thymus both create antibodies, while bone marrow (among
other things) creates white blood cells, which are crucial to fighting off infection. The lymphatic
system carries waste as well as nutrients, and lymph fluid throughout the body in the blood stream.
The lymph nodes act as a strainer or filter, so when the lymph fluid travels through, it traps virus s,
bacteria, and any other substance that s foreign to your body. These things are then destroyed by
lymphocytes, which are specialized white blood cells. The spleen, which also works as a filter, gets rid
of aged or damaged platelets and blood cells, and also destroys bacteria and other harmful or foreign
substances. When an autoimmune disease occurs, it is because the body has triggered an inflammatory
defense response when there is nothing to protect the body from. Inflammation is what happens when
white blood cells and immune proteins are fighting off infection. The immune system

Characterism In The Black Witch By Laurie Forest
The Black Witch, a Novel written by Laurie Forest and published May 2017, attempts to tell a
fictional story about a young girl who confronts racism, elitism, and biasness; and grows into a hero
for not just her people, but of all races. It is meant to be a story of redemption and learning to trust
those she has been raised to hate and fear, a premise in which first intrigued me to purchase the book,
however upon reading it fails to succeed in its mission, thus leaving me disappointed in the story.
While it is the first book in a series, it is my belief that while there should be some lingering questions
that makes a reader want to continue the series, the initial promise of fully trusting the other races
should have been fulfilled. Elloren Gardner is the main character, and our POV for this story. We first
meet her living in a rural town with her uncle and unaware of her status within her people. Her entire
life she is raised with strict religious beliefs, for which she has no basis to question them. Part of these
religious indoctrinations is that her people are pure and that all other races are evil, a belief she holds
strongly to. We are first introduced to this belief in the very first chapter where Elloren states We
Gardnerians are a pure blooded race, free from the stain of the heathen races that surround us. This
ingratiates the reader that our main character is racist towards the other races that share this fictional
world. On initial reading, I placed this

In 1939 Hitler and Stalin signed an agreement that meant they formed a temporary alliance. This non

Stalin were complete political opposites; at one end of the scale was Communism, and at the other end

this treaty of peace would not last for long.
Western Europe had been safely conquered, except for Britain, which was so weak it would not be

would become even more fearful of their power.

The Origin Of The Banshee
Connor Harkins
Jonathan Tyler
English 102 10

The Banshee The banshee is a phantom that is said to wail whenever a person is about to die. It would
visit a friend or a family member of a Irish person who was dying. People are afraid of them because it
shows us our mortality. We are afraid of death because we do not know what is on the other side, so
naturally we would be afraid of the harbinger of death. The origin of the banshee is intertwined with
death as it is in its spectre form. There are many legends that the banshee came from. It ranges from
women who took alcohol to mourn the death a member of a powerful family to ancient goddesses that

The banshee is said to be a woman that were paid with alcohol to mourn the death of a person. The
family would pay the woman, who was normally and alcoholic, in drinks to cry at the grave a their
deceased loved one to make it seem like they were very respected. The Christian church did not like
this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are being punished
for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place unlike many ghosts.
The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life of mourning for the
family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more supernatural myth to it.
In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing that it
is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known as the
Tuatha De Danann. According to Carolyn White in A History of Irish Fairies, The Tuatha De Danann,
the divine folk descended from the mother goddess Dana or Danu, were gods from Greece (some say,
of the Golden race) who came to Ireland enshrouded by a magical mist which hid the sun and their
appearance for three days and nights... (White 18). This supports the idea of the church that the
banshee is a demon, because it is the descendant of a Pagan goddess. Women are that to be bringers of
life because they give birth to children. So the tale of the banshee being the

The show is full of excitement, it keeps you at the edge of your seat, and it grasps your imaginations.
It s not like any other show you ve seen live. The circus brings to life wonderment only seen in

found is sensational; Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil is an entertainment company that was co
founded in the 1984 at Baie Saint Paul, Quebec, Canada by Gilles Ste Croix and Guy Laliberté. It was

Barn Burning Sarty Character Analysis
Blinded by Loyalty
The word loyalty can be broken down into its main term, loyal. To be loyal is to show dedication to an
ideology, individual, or group whom presumably all share the same beliefs. For instance, many people
use either Apple or Android cell phones. It is not that one is better than the other, it is usually just what
a person has grown up using. This can be described as brand loyal. In Barn Burning the family loyalty
theme is made evident throughout the story by bringing to light the dynamic in which the Snopes
family is expected to act with emphasis on a strong, harsh father and a son with underlying values that
differ from those of his family.

Obeying is the basic principle in loyalty, one in which Sarty cannot differ between. For him loyalty is
pleasing his father no matter what the consequence. That is until he can break free from the oppression
of loyalty and finally see that it was loyalty that was blinding his true character. It is not until 20 years
later that Sarty realizes that society wanted only truth, justice (Faulkner 3). It was not society whom
demanded extreme loyalty, it was merely his family and more specifically his power hungry father.
Abner at one point in the story takes it as far as to tell Sarty to stick to his families own blood because
if not then he would have no one else to rely on (Faulkner 3). This shallow threat is yet another attack
on a boy that aims to please his father, but is so caught in the middle of his battle with loyalty and self
that he can be depicted as flying and being removed or suspended from the ground (Kirchdorfer 116).

where his feet do not feel the floor under them (Faulkner

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED)
This paper explores Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), a disorder categorized by the Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM 5) as an impulse control disorder. To
understand this disorder research was collected on predisposing factors that make an individual more
vulnerable to IED. Research was also collected on precipitating and perpetuating factors to explore
what factors trigger the disorder and subsequently prolong the symptoms. Finally, research was
collected on how the disorder is diagnosed and current treatment options for individuals diagnosed
with IED.

The optimal goal of treatment for patients with IED is remission, which is the resolution of symptoms
or improvement to the point where only one or two symptoms of mild intensity persist. If that goal is
unattainable a practical goal is stabilizing the safety of the patient and others as well as substantially
improving the number, intensity, and frequency of symptoms. To achieve these treatment goals studies
have shown the best treatment is a combination of medication and psychotherapy (Alpert Spillmann,
1997). The use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Fluoxetine has shown moderate to
large improvement in the reduction of impulsive aggressive behavior. The goal of the Fluoxetine is to
balance out the altered serotonin levels that are commonly altered in individuals with IED (Coccaro,
M.D., 2012). In addition to medication cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to reduce
impulsive aggression, anger, and hostile automatic thoughts. The therapies used include relaxation
training, cognitive restructuring, and coping skills training. The rates of full remission from IED were
29% with fluoxetine alone and 33% from cognitive behavioral therapy alone. When combined the
treatments are more effective for sustained remission because they work through different mechanisms
(Coccaro, M.D., 2012). Studies have shown that IED symptoms precede the onset of other comorbid
disorders and are persistent and follow a chronic course of at least 12 years. Intervention at an early
age is most effective before development of comorbid disorders (Coccaro, M.D.,

Murder Is A Homicide Crime
Murder Charges
Murder is a homicide crime where there is an intentional killing of a human being by another human
being with malice aforethought. Malice aforethought is what separates murder from other crimes such
as voluntary or involuntary manslaughter ( Free Advice: Law, 2015). Murder can be classified into
different degrees or types, but not all states break them up, but instead name the top type as capital
murder.
First Degree Murder
In most states, first degree murder is defined as the unlawful killing on an individual after planning or
lying in wait for the victim ( Find Law, 2015). The act must be performed out of willfulness,
deliberation, and premeditation to be considered first degree murder in most states. Other acts of
violent felonies such as arson, burglary, kidnapping, robbery, and rape that results in a death can also
be charged as first degree murder ( Diffen, 2014).
Willfulness is the intent to end human life, the life does not have to be a predetermined person so
much as it has to be the thought of carrying out the act on another human being. If a person sets out to
kill a human and unintentionally kills a different person the killer can still be charged with first degree
murder ( Diffen, 2014, para. 2). Deliberation and premedication is determined individually on a case
by case basis and it does not mean killer must think at any length of time or plan ahead for the murder
to be considered premeditated ( Find Law, 2015).

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy And Person Centered Psychology...
The counseling profession has a broad spectrum of possibilities when it comes to choosing which
psychological approach to take. The field of counseling takes many forms and offers many career
options, from school counseling to marriage and family therapy. As there are numerous styles in
existence, it is important to be aware of the many approaches available to take. For my research two
psychological approaches, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person Centered Psychology, will be
critically analyzed and discussed in depth in order to compare the techniques as well as effectiveness
of each.
Foundation of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was developed by Sigmund Freud during the Victorian
Era in Vienna, Austria. Sigmund Freud s psychological works set the base for the profession of
psychology as well as the practice of modern psychotherapy. Freud believed human behavior was
motivated by intrapsychic conflict stemming from the three areas of the subconscious: id, ego, and
superego (Murdock, 2009).
Freud s psychoanalytic approach to therapy had more of a negative view of human nature that Carl
Rogers view. Freud thought human dysfunction developed as a result of poor genetic make up, as well
as deficits (fixations) caused by missed psychosexual developmental stages. In short, human conflict
came about as a result of struggles between the id (primal, instinctual urges), ego (role of self in
reality) and superego (conscience/critic), manifested in the

The Importance Of Multiplicative Thinking
Multiplicative thinking, fractions and decimals are important aspects of mathematics required for a
deep conceptual understanding. The following portfolio will discuss the key ideas of each and the
strategies to enable positive teaching. It will highlight certain difficulties and misconceptions that
children face and discuss resources and activities to help alleviate these. It will also acknowledge the
connections between the areas of mathematics and discuss the need for succinct teaching instead of an
isolated approach. Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking is imperative to a child s
understanding of important mathematical concepts and is seen as the big idea in number that links
multiple key ideas and strategies (Vergnaud, as cited in Siemon, 2011). Commonly, children have a
procedural based view of multiplicative thinking which can hinder progress, as opposed to a more
conceptual view which is a far better learning framework (Hurst Hurrell, 2016). If teachers are to
maximise a child s learning, they must acknowledge this and help children maintain a conceptual
understanding of multiplicative thinking and emphasise this much more so than procedural rules.
Several key ideas and strategies underpin the success of multiplicative thinking and a greater
conceptual understanding. Hurst and Hurrell (2014) explain that children need to be acutely aware of

The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Robert Lewis Stevenson
The doctrine that there are two independent divine beings or eternal principles, one good and the other
evil. This definition of dualism and duality provide a great foundation to what I am attempting to
portray as one of the biggest themes in the book The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde Robert
Lewis Stevenson. Dualism and the idea of duality are the main theme I would like to focus on in this
essay. In reality, the duality of man is often analyzed as merely a possibility. We tryto investigate this
facet of human behavior and spend much time trying to determine the ways that a dual personality can
affect people. Today s movies and literature deal with the possibility of a good and evil twin residing
in the same body, sometimes in

Contribution Of An Ethnographic Research On Friendship
Throughout this essay I will be evaluating the contribution of an ethnographic approach to research on
friendship. I will be looking at, and including evidence to support both sides of the argument as to
whether or not this research method is in fact useful when it comes to gaining knowledge about
friendship. As well as evaluating this method, I will compare it against others to reflect on the
strengths, weaknesses and the typical data collected. I will look at some of the questions about
friendship that have been addressed, and then whether this is the best method or if there are others that
could have been more suitable.
Ethnography is a qualitative method of research in which the researcher takes part in the activities of a
group such that they are able to complete their observations over a period of time in a natural, real life
environment.
When it comes to investigating friendship, one question that has been raised is what is the role of
friendship in the life of a 13 year old? . Several sources of data include ethnographic notes taken
whilst spending time with a group of friends during school lunch breaks and diary/blog entries etc.
Firstly, in this case the researcher would need to carefully consider the strengths and weaknesses of
each type of data, for example, when looking at a blog the information/data available is likely to be
information that the author wants to share with a wider audience whereas a diary entry is more private.
In this case, both documents

Commended for efficiently arranging patient disposition, thus minimising disruption to flow.
First on call for consultation of a variety of ED referrals, which required prioritisation, patient
assessment, investigation requests, patient flow awareness and instituting management plans.
Co ordinated transfers via RFDS to tertiary hospitals for complex patients while managing up to 23

Japan s Change Of Modernity And Democracy
There are many things that contributed to Japan s change to modernity and democracy whether it was
between the political parties or if it was between their cultural system and the people s rights. Before
Japan changed to a more modern and democratic society it was a feudal government structure based
on Confucius views which was during the Tokugawa period. During the Tokugawa period there was a
separation between the social classes which was categorized in four groups the samurai, peasants,
artisans, and merchants. The two classes that had the most power were the samurai and the peasants.
The samurai had the most power because they created a moral example and the peasants came in
second into the social class since they produced food which was essential to survival of the people.
The last two classes the artisans and the merchants. Although the merchants were last in the social
class some were very wealthy and even owned their own monopolies, but since they were in the
bottom of the class the laws prevented them to come higher into power. Although Japan was a feudal
government and was more traditional the Japanese still developed some modernized urban influences
like expanding their trading of commodities, and their advancement in their science studies. Though
the Japanese had some of these modernized views the Tokugawa period soon came to an end due to
the lack of government control by the shogun which created the four classes to fall apart. The

Chesapeake Settlement In Virginia
Among the colonies occupied by English settlers was the Chesapeake colony of Virginia. Virginia was
described by Captain John Smith as a fruitfull and delightsome land . The Virginia Company settled in
Virginia hoping to achieve prosperity by finding gold and to dwell in a society intended to be a
pleasant, profitable, and diversified settlement. Instead they found that the only sure means of making
profit was through tobacco the crop that would eventually make life in Virginia rather unpleasant and
relatively short.
The Virginia Company of London, a joint stock company, was one in which investors offered funding
for an expedition to Virginia. It was evident that settling in Virginia would not be as pleasant and
uplifting as predicted when

Mindfulness Practice For Enhancing Educational Outcomes
Introduction Mindfulness practice has received immense attention in recent years. Specifically,
mindfulness practice has been explored by professional athletes, from organizations attempting to
improve productivity, and even politicians for stress reduction. Nevertheless, educators have begun to
explore mindfulness practice effectiveness for enhancing educational, emotional, and behavioral
outcomes for students. Fundamentally, mindfulness practice is established on spirituality principles
that teach attention focusing. Moreover, the technique facilitates open communication regarding
emotions and feelings. Thus, mindfulness practice aims to silence distractions of the mind while
enhancing awareness. As a relatively new practice, it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, a student making an offensive remark can disrupt the entire class as students start to
laugh. Nevertheless, mindfulness practice is unique as it focuses on emotional and awareness support
for students. Similarly, teachers can benefit from mindfulness practice as it allows them to establish an
effective buffer from distracting and stressful experiences. Thus, mindfulness practice can be valuable
for ensuring classroom focus remains on teaching and obtaining educational outcomes. While
mindfulness practice is relatively new in education, a magnitude of research has overwhelming
demonstrated how psychological wellbeing impacts educational outcomes. Specifically, research has
revealed that negative environments and feelings can lead to decreases in academic performance and
achievement (Singh et al., 2007). Examining mindfulness practice is important because it relies on
principles to improve emotional regulation, attention awareness, and learning focus. It is practical to
assume that enhancement in these areas will lead to a variety of classroom benefits. In addition to
educational benefits, the student and teacher will obtain personal growth as their psychological
capacity will be increased. Ultimately, the program is being proposed for schools as it promotes
emotional and social skill development, which will subsequently enhance teaching and learning
outcomes. The significance of the program is based on evidence that indicates children and youth

  • 2. Hmax Model Paper Final Project: Research about HMAX model Seok Hee Lee Abstract In this paper, I investigated some of the models of computational neuroscience used in the face recognition field. The model to be discussed is HMAX model. The paper contains what HMAX model is, how it is derived in terms of biological background, and how it is being used for facial recognition. Also, I simulated the simplified version of the model in MATLAB. The simulation of the simplified version verified one cell in the highest hierarchy covers the entire retinal space of the given image. INTRODUCTION First of all, I looked into the paper written by Riesenhuber and how HMAX model is derived from a biological concept of a visual cortex. It begins with the power of cells found in macaque inferotemporal cortex (IT). The cells in IT are considered as essential cells for recognizing an object and IT is the highest area in the ventral visual stream. They are tuned to views of complicated objects, for instance a face of human. Their response remains almost the same when scale or position of an object changes, and it is one of the characteristic of these cells. This raises a question: how can these cells distinguish similar faces? In the other words, this paper talks what mechanism these cells use to respond differently from the similar inputs. This question is related to the model proposed by Hubel and Wiesel. In this model, simple cells with neighboring receptive fields feed into higher hierarchy cell and this ... • 3. Geographic Disparity In Medical Care Humans are one of the most vulnerable species that walk the earth. Their simple bodies are susceptible to almost every type of bacterial or viral disease which could cause death in a matter of hours. From the earliest nomadic tribes of humans, there has been a need for medical care. Whether the need for healing comes from man s simple mistakes or from man s rivalry with nature, medicine and simple bandages are some parts of the necessity to heal. The one advantage that humans have over all other animal apexes in the world is man s ability to create. This ability gave humans modern technology and medical care that is capable of curing almost every disease or disability known. Although this technology is known, it is not always accessible to ... The geographic disparity exists most The figures are stark: the average density of dentists to head of population in Africa is 1 to 150,000; in industrialized countries, the average is 1 to 5,000 ( High Risk 1). There is no shortage of capable dentists in the world; there is only a shortage of capable dentists in the places that need them most. The problem continues to escalate as fewer dentists want to open general practices in the most desolate places in Africa. The problem escalates as the ...duties which traditionally have been performed by assisting personnel are now being carried out by the dentists themselves ( WHO 2). This fact only makes the problem of the lack of dentists worse. The few dentists there are in an area, some of them have to help the others because there are not any capable people of helping the dentists, thus slowing the process even further. The problems continue to snowball as Health care in rural areas can suffer due to lack of expertise and trained professionals. Moreover, excessive workloads and long working hours for the remaining staff can lead to demoralization, burnout, and decline in the quality of care (Parkash 3). Competitive Characters In The Odyssey My goal of competing in a 5k is like odysseus s journey home because I am training very hard and sometimes I plateau and even have to backtrack to see progress to where finally I will achieve my ultimate goal. There are assertive characters in The Odyssey that stand out to me and represent my training and the hard road it is. The characters I chose were Athena, the Cyclops, the Lotus Eaters and Odysseus. These characters imitate my training because they all serve as a symbol for each part of practicing for the 5k. Athena, Athena is a very important character in the book The Odyssey because she is Odysseus s coach to get him back to his wife and son at home. My Athena as a part of my guidance is probably my mom or my brother. My mom is essential as to getting the food I need to stay healthy and to increase my performance as well as keep encouraging me to do my absolute best. • 5. Analysis Of The Book The Hobbit The Hobbit, a novel by J.R.R Tolkien, was a prequel to The Lord of the Rings series. The Hobbit is also an adventure story that follows the classic, hero s journey. The protagonist of the novel, Bilbo, is much like the European explorers in the Age of Exploration during the 15th Century. For example, Christopher Columbus was widely regarded as a hero during his time. Columbus was a Spanish explorer that is known for discovering the Americas. In 1492, Columbus set sail west in hopes of discovering a new route to the Indies, instead he found America. Like Bilbo, Columbus was an ordinary person who went on an adventure, faced challenges, and in the end, became a hero. Previously, a hero s journey was mentioned. The pattern that heroes go through in their journey was discovered by writer Joseph Campbell. Campbell studied many adventure stories and noticed a pattern that all of the heroes went through. He said that the journey they take happens in seven phases. These stages take the hero out of the environment they are in, give them conflicts, make them face a big challenge, sends them home, and finally the hero shares their gift to their society. This cycle is demonstrated in many adventure stories and movies. In fact, many authors study Campbell s work when they are writing stories. Bilbo goes through this hero s journey and this is shown when he goes through stage one and two, four, and five. First, Bilbo goes through stage one and two of the hero s journey. Stage one and ... • 6. What Does Freedom Mean To You Essay Abraham Lincoln said, Freedom is not the right to do what we want, but what we ought, we dare to do our duty as we understand it. Freedom is the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint according to the dictionary. Freedom means the soldiers fighting in wars to have our states remain free. Freedom means to have rights. Freedom means that I can freely say my opinions. A symbol of freedom is the Statue of Liberty. The first type of freedom I am going to talk about is the soldiers fighting in war for us to remain free. The United States soldiers are a very important part of freedom to me. The soldiers give their lives to keep us free. The U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marines are all part of our protection. The next type of freedom I will talk about is to have rights and liberty in our government. • 7. Genesis 24 A protagonist is the character that drives the action of the plot. In Genesis 24, the main character who drives the plot of the story is Abraham s servant, who has been given the job to find a suitable wife for Isaac. The entire story of Genesis 24 is revolved around the job of the servant and him being divinely introduced to Rebekah, the wife Abraham said to find. Abraham provides specific instructions for his servant in his task to find Isaac a wife; therefore, the action of the story moves from Abraham, which most of this part of Genesis is about, to Abraham s servant. The servant finding Rebekah is a fulfillment of God s promise to Abraham of many descendants given a couple chapters before in Genesis. Additionally, the previous chapter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If Rebekah were the main character of the story, the story would have told of her actions before the servant notices her. The writer of the story made sure to frame Rebekah as a secondary character because she is only found because of the directions given to the servant. As mentioned before, Rebekah responded to the servant s request just as he was told the proper wife would. In addition, Rebekah is part of the house of [the servant s] master s kin (Genesis 24:27). The servant is the one who asked that Rebekah come right away even though her family objected the notion, which was part of the servant s initial directions (Genesis 24:56). Rebekah is the embodiment of the woman Abraham described to the servant. Being the embodiment means being the outcome of the story, not the protagonist. Also, even when Rebekah has been chosen by the servant, the wedding of Rebekah and Isaac does not take up a large part of the chapter. Genesis 24:67 proclaims that Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah s tent... and she became his wife . This act of marriage seems to be an afterthought because the servant followed the directions of Abraham, so Isaac knew she was divinely meant to be his wife. The largest part of the chapter was still the servant trying to find the wife for Isaac. • 10. Pros And Cons Of Caging Hens Caging hens is unacceptable and a barbaric way of keeping animals. In New Zealand, 80% of hens are currently suffering in battery cages, living an unnatural lifestyle. This inhumane way of farming has to stop as it s detrimental to the rights of hens and all animals to live and be treated without cruelty and I believe it is simply unjust. Not only are these defenseless Hens killed, they are also denied the right to move and walk, are arguably tortured and will never spread their wings. The ban of battery cages needs to take a stronger stance as the phasing out of battery cages by 2022 serves only to make way for colony cages which are just as cruel. The raise in egg and poultry prices will have an impact on families all over New Zealand unless the government subsidises the abolishment of battery farming and colony cages. The change in egg prices may not be as drastic for Kiwi families as I have found there is just a mere $0.24 difference between a single size 7 factory farmed egg and free range eggs at countdown. Is a couple of dollars per dozen eggs really worth the exploitation of hens? Caged eggs may be cheaper but it comes at the expense of Animal welfare. Instead of being merely an economic necessity, an occupation is a reflection of an individual s personality. For example, a more artistically inclined individual may choose an occupation that requires creativity, such as hair dressing. Despite this, the government has a way of making it difficult for people to follow their passions. Occupational licensing laws are the way the government does this. These laws are government issued permits given once certain educational standards are met. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... West Virginia is the constitutionality of a law requiring those specializing in medicine to attend medical school (482). The Court upheld the constitutionality of the law, stating that it serves a legitimate state interest to protect the public from fraud and other deceptive practices (482). Though, the Court found this specific law constitutional, they emphasize that similar kind of laws are invalid when [regulations] have no relation to such calling or profession . . . they can operate to deprive one of his right to pursue a lawful vocation (482). San Francisco, California had a law that required those who owned a wooden building and used it as a storefront for a laundry business to obtain a permit from the board of supervisors. The board of supervisors were given great discretion in how they granted permits under the law (482). The Court, in Yick Wo v. Hopkins, held that the law was unconstitutional based on its discriminatory nature; Chinese owners of laundries were the victims of this state sanctioned discriminatory, since they were usually denied permits when they applied (482). Nebbia v. New York is the case that marks the beginning of the Court s constitutional deference to state governments in regard to law and regulations that inhibit employment (482). This difference is otherwise known as the rational basis test, which gives states great leeway to adopt whatever economic policy [that] may reasonably be deemed to promote public welfare, in so far as the laws passed are seen to have a reasonable relation to a proper legislative purpose, and are neither arbitrary nor discriminatory ... Contrast JetBlue and Southwest Airlines in terms of the following two aspects: 1. Compare and explain the impact of key external factors on each company (e.g., economic conditions and the growing consumer interest in leisure travel). The key external factors like the growth in the economy, disposable income, and fuel prices have negatively affected JetBlue. It was compelled to change its strategy several times and in 2011 had an income of $86 million down from $97 million in 2010. The growing consumer interest in leisure travel has positively affected JetBlue. The success of JetBlue has been attributed to growing consumer interest in leisure travel. The economic factors like slow economic growth, low disposable income, and fluctuation in the price of oil have been responsible for weak performance of Southwest Airlines. There are no adverse political effects. Southwest Airlines has been positively affected by the increase in consumer interest in leisure travel. The leisure segment is an important segment for low cost airlines. The net income has declined from $459 million in 2010 to $178 million in 2011. It is beneficial for me to reflect on my learning and practice in the past few weeks in the areas of class reading and teaching, triads, meeting with directees in sessions and supervision. My class reading and teaching in the last few weeks provide me with a solid idea about spiritual direction. My understanding is that in the spiritual direction session, the director is to listen to on an ongoing conversation between the directee and God. The Holy Spirit has already been working in the life of directee before the session and will continue to be at work after the session is over. The emphasis of spiritual direction will be to enhance the relationship between the directee and God. In a spiritual direction session, typical questions asked are Where is God in this? or Where has God gone and why don t I sense any divine presence at all? I learn to know that spiritual direction arises out of inviting and listening to God. One thing I am in tension with myself and need to be reminded constantly is that I should not have the attitude or expectation to resolve the issue mentioned in the session. The focus of the session should be about what goes on between the directee and God. • 29. The Human Body s Defense System The immune system is our body s defense system it is vital to our body s health and survival. We need the immune system to fight off bacteria, viruses, and other foreign, harmful substances as well as our own cells that have become bad or even cancerous. There are several building blocks that make up the system as a whole, each just as important as the next, that work hand in hand. This includes the lymphatic system, biological molecules, antibodies, white blood cells, the tonsils, thymus, bone marrow, and the spleen. The tonsils and thymus both create antibodies, while bone marrow (among other things) creates white blood cells, which are crucial to fighting off infection. The lymphatic system carries waste as well as nutrients, and lymph fluid throughout the body in the blood stream. The lymph nodes act as a strainer or filter, so when the lymph fluid travels through, it traps virus s, bacteria, and any other substance that s foreign to your body. These things are then destroyed by lymphocytes, which are specialized white blood cells. The spleen, which also works as a filter, gets rid of aged or damaged platelets and blood cells, and also destroys bacteria and other harmful or foreign substances. When an autoimmune disease occurs, it is because the body has triggered an inflammatory defense response when there is nothing to protect the body from. Inflammation is what happens when white blood cells and immune proteins are fighting off infection. The immune system ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is meant to be a story of redemption and learning to trust those she has been raised to hate and fear, a premise in which first intrigued me to purchase the book, however upon reading it fails to succeed in its mission, thus leaving me disappointed in the story. While it is the first book in a series, it is my belief that while there should be some lingering questions that makes a reader want to continue the series, the initial promise of fully trusting the other races should have been fulfilled. The Christian church did not like this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are being punished for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place unlike many ghosts. The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life of mourning for the family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more supernatural myth to it. In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing that it is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known as the Tuatha De Danann. It is not that one is better than the other, it is usually just what a person has grown up using. This can be described as brand loyal. In Barn Burning the family loyalty theme is made evident throughout the story by bringing to light the dynamic in which the Snopes family is expected to act with emphasis on a strong, harsh father and a son with underlying values that differ from those of his family. If that goal is unattainable a practical goal is stabilizing the safety of the patient and others as well as substantially improving the number, intensity, and frequency of symptoms. To achieve these treatment goals studies have shown the best treatment is a combination of medication and psychotherapy (Alpert Spillmann, 1997). The use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Fluoxetine has shown moderate to large improvement in the reduction of impulsive aggressive behavior. The goal of the Fluoxetine is to balance out the altered serotonin levels that are commonly altered in individuals with IED (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). In addition to medication cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to reduce impulsive aggression, anger, and hostile automatic thoughts. The therapies used include relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, and coping skills training. The rates of full remission from IED were 29% with fluoxetine alone and 33% from cognitive behavioral therapy alone. When combined the treatments are more effective for sustained remission because they work through different mechanisms (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). Malice aforethought is what separates murder from other crimes such as voluntary or involuntary manslaughter ( Free Advice: Law, 2015). Murder can be classified into different degrees or types, but not all states break them up, but instead name the top type as capital murder. First Degree Murder In most states, first degree murder is defined as the unlawful killing on an individual after planning or lying in wait for the victim ( Find Law, 2015). The act must be performed out of willfulness, deliberation, and premeditation to be considered first degree murder in most states. Other acts of violent felonies such as arson, burglary, kidnapping, robbery, and rape that results in a death can also be charged as first degree murder ( Diffen, 2014). Willfulness is the intent to end human life, the life does not have to be a predetermined person so much as it has to be the thought of carrying out the act on another human being. If a person sets out to kill a human and unintentionally kills a different person the killer can still be charged with first degree murder ( Diffen, 2014, para. 2). Freud believed human behavior was motivated by intrapsychic conflict stemming from the three areas of the subconscious: id, ego, and superego (Murdock, 2009). Freud s psychoanalytic approach to therapy had more of a negative view of human nature that Carl Rogers view. Freud thought human dysfunction developed as a result of poor genetic make up, as well as deficits (fixations) caused by missed psychosexual developmental stages. In short, human conflict came about as a result of struggles between the id (primal, instinctual urges), ego (role of self in reality) and superego (conscience/critic), manifested in the ... • 40. The Importance Of Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking, fractions and decimals are important aspects of mathematics required for a deep conceptual understanding. The following portfolio will discuss the key ideas of each and the strategies to enable positive teaching. It will highlight certain difficulties and misconceptions that children face and discuss resources and activities to help alleviate these. It will also acknowledge the connections between the areas of mathematics and discuss the need for succinct teaching instead of an isolated approach. Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking is imperative to a child s understanding of important mathematical concepts and is seen as the big idea in number that links multiple key ideas and strategies (Vergnaud, as cited in Siemon, 2011). Commonly, children have a procedural based view of multiplicative thinking which can hinder progress, as opposed to a more conceptual view which is a far better learning framework (Hurst Hurrell, 2016). If teachers are to maximise a child s learning, they must acknowledge this and help children maintain a conceptual understanding of multiplicative thinking and emphasise this much more so than procedural rules. Several key ideas and strategies underpin the success of multiplicative thinking and a greater conceptual understanding. Hurst and Hurrell (2014) explain that children need to be acutely aware of the ten times multiplicative relationship between places and how this effects many aspects of mathematics. ... • 41. The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Robert Lewis Stevenson The doctrine that there are two independent divine beings or eternal principles, one good and the other evil. This definition of dualism and duality provide a great foundation to what I am attempting to portray as one of the biggest themes in the book The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde Robert Lewis Stevenson. Dualism and the idea of duality are the main theme I would like to focus on in this essay. In reality, the duality of man is often analyzed as merely a possibility. We tryto investigate this facet of human behavior and spend much time trying to determine the ways that a dual personality can affect people. Today s movies and literature deal with the possibility of a good and evil twin residing in the same body, sometimes in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Contribution Of An Ethnographic Research On Friendship Throughout this essay I will be evaluating the contribution of an ethnographic approach to research on friendship. I will be looking at, and including evidence to support both sides of the argument as to whether or not this research method is in fact useful when it comes to gaining knowledge about friendship. As well as evaluating this method, I will compare it against others to reflect on the strengths, weaknesses and the typical data collected. I will look at some of the questions about friendship that have been addressed, and then whether this is the best method or if there are others that could have been more suitable. Ethnography is a qualitative method of research in which the researcher takes part in the activities of a group such that they are able to complete their observations over a period of time in a natural, real life environment. When it comes to investigating friendship, one question that has been raised is what is the role of friendship in the life of a 13 year old? . Several sources of data include ethnographic notes taken whilst spending time with a group of friends during school lunch breaks and diary/blog entries etc. Firstly, in this case the researcher would need to carefully consider the strengths and weaknesses of each type of data, for example, when looking at a blog the information/data available is likely to be information that the author wants to share with a wider audience whereas a diary entry is more private. In this case, both documents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First on call for consultation of a variety of ED referrals, which required prioritisation, patient assessment, investigation requests, patient flow awareness and instituting management plans. Co ordinated transfers via RFDS to tertiary hospitals for complex patients while managing up to 23 patients with my supervisor. Commended by rural GPs whom I phoned prior to patient discharge to enable an effective handover. Recognised for completing quality discharge letters, leaving pending summaries to a record low. Worked efficiently for preparation of, and during, fortnightly multidisciplinary meetings that discussed management for patients with cancer. My performance was commended by my Professors.  To complete the Medical Service Improvement Program at Rockingham General Hospital in 2016.  Involved in DVT prophylaxis and APACHE audit in ICU SJOG Murdoch in 2015.  Involved in the National Stroke Foundation Audit 2015 at Fiona Stanley Hospital with Dr Ghia and Gill Edmonds (CNS) which aims to evaluate the process in stroke management.  AHC antimicrobial stewardship program 2014: this audit examined the use of intraoperative antibiotics used by anaesthetists. • 45. Japan s Change Of Modernity And Democracy There are many things that contributed to Japan s change to modernity and democracy whether it was between the political parties or if it was between their cultural system and the people s rights. Before Japan changed to a more modern and democratic society it was a feudal government structure based on Confucius views which was during the Tokugawa period. During the Tokugawa period there was a separation between the social classes which was categorized in four groups the samurai, peasants, artisans, and merchants. The two classes that had the most power were the samurai and the peasants. The samurai had the most power because they created a moral example and the peasants came in second into the social class since they produced food which was essential to survival of the people. The last two classes the artisans and the merchants. Although the merchants were last in the social class some were very wealthy and even owned their own monopolies, but since they were in the bottom of the class the laws prevented them to come higher into power. Although Japan was a feudal government and was more traditional the Japanese still developed some modernized urban influences like expanding their trading of commodities, and their advancement in their science studies. Though the Japanese had some of these modernized views the Tokugawa period soon came to an end due to the lack of government control by the shogun which created the four classes to fall apart. The differences between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Virginia was described by Captain John Smith as a fruitfull and delightsome land . The Virginia Company settled in Virginia hoping to achieve prosperity by finding gold and to dwell in a society intended to be a pleasant, profitable, and diversified settlement. Instead they found that the only sure means of making profit was through tobacco the crop that would eventually make life in Virginia rather unpleasant and relatively short. • 48. Mindfulness Practice For Enhancing Educational Outcomes Introduction Mindfulness practice has received immense attention in recent years. Specifically, mindfulness practice has been explored by professional athletes, from organizations attempting to improve productivity, and even politicians for stress reduction. Nevertheless, educators have begun to explore mindfulness practice effectiveness for enhancing educational, emotional, and behavioral outcomes for students. Fundamentally, mindfulness practice is established on spirituality principles that teach attention focusing. Moreover, the technique facilitates open communication regarding emotions and feelings. Thus, mindfulness practice aims to silence distractions of the mind while enhancing awareness. As a relatively new practice, it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, a student making an offensive remark can disrupt the entire class as students start to laugh. Nevertheless, mindfulness practice is unique as it focuses on emotional and awareness support for students. Similarly, teachers can benefit from mindfulness practice as it allows them to establish an effective buffer from distracting and stressful experiences. Thus, mindfulness practice can be valuable for ensuring classroom focus remains on teaching and obtaining educational outcomes. While mindfulness practice is relatively new in education, a magnitude of research has overwhelming demonstrated how psychological wellbeing impacts educational outcomes. Specifically, research has revealed that negative environments and feelings can lead to decreases in academic performance and achievement (Singh et al., 2007). Examining mindfulness practice is important because it relies on principles to improve emotional regulation, attention awareness, and learning focus. It is practical to assume that enhancement in these areas will lead to a variety of classroom benefits. In addition to educational benefits, the student and teacher will obtain personal growth as their psychological capacity will be increased. Ultimately, the program is being proposed for schools as it promotes emotional and social skill development, which will subsequently enhance teaching and learning outcomes. The significance of the program is based on evidence that indicates children and youth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
