Essay on Walt Whitman
Walt Whitman
In parting with traditional poetic formalities, Walt Whitman alleviated a burden that impeded his
ability to achieve full poetic expression. To Whitman, the strict boundaries that formal meter,
structure, and rhyme imposed set limits on his stylistic freedom. This is not to say that these limits
prevented Whitman from conveying his themes. Rather, they presented a contradiction to which
Whitman refused to conform. In Whitman s eyes, to meet these formal guidelines one would also
have to sacrifice the ability to express qualities and passion of living men. Thus, Whitman contested
traditional poetic protocol because it added a layer of superficiality that concerned itself with
creating perfect rhythmical, metrical, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This meant that stanzas consisted of a predetermined amount of lines or that the poem had a
predetermined amount of stanzas. Augmenting this formal structure were predetermined rhyme
schemes (such as abab cdcd efef gg in Shakespearean sonnets). Based on the above, we can describe
traditional poetic etiquette as adhering to the suggested formal patterns predetermined by the
tradition of British poetry. Just in reaching the above conclusion, a problem arises that all poets, not
just Whitman, face when trying to conform to this style. This problem is that all of these rules are
cumbersome. It is difficult for a poet to convey the theme of a poem when he or she is concerned
with whether or not each word fits into a designated formal pattern. Yet, some would argue that this
is what makes poetry such an elegant art form. Surely, Whitman recognized the genius found in
Shakespeare s sonnets and other constitutive examples of traditional British poetry. However,
whether or not Whitman recognized the genius of great traditional British poets, is inconsequential.
What did matter was whether or not Whitman felt that this style was appropriate for him. The
answer is no. Whitman found problems not simply with the fact that clinging to the traditional style
might be burdensome (surely this would not have been an insurmountable task for Whitman), but
his main issue with traditional style concerned the ornamental effect of formal regularity:

The Level Of Competition In The Soft Drinks Industry
The level of competition in an industry determines the number of profits made by players in the
industry. An industry with a high level of profits is likely to attract many players which erode
the profits made by firms gradually. A firm seeking to venture into a new industry should
evaluate the level of profits in an industry as well as how intense competition is in the industry
before making a move. Porter s five forces model provides a comprehensive framework that can
be used to evaluate how intense the competition is in the industry. The soft drinks industry is an
industry that is very profitable but also exhibits cut throat competition. Coca Cola and Pepsi
companies are the players with much dominance in the soft drinks industry. This paper explores
the competition between Coca Cola and Pepsi companies dubbed cola wars in the context of
Porter s five forces model. Threat of New Entrants (Low) This force analyzes the ease or
difficulty of a new player entering an industry. Industries that are profitable but have minimal
barriers to entry attract many players who make the profits to plummet. Profits decrease when a
large number of firms compete for a limited market share (Hill Jones, 2010). Therefore, existing
players, particularly in a profitable industry, should create extensive barriers to entry to deter new
firms from entering the industry. Coca Cola and Pepsi companies are the dominant players in the
soft drinks industry (Yoffie, 2011). The two companies

The Three Branches
The plan to divide the government into three branches was proposed by James Madison, at the
Constitutional Convention of 1787. He modeled the division from who he referred to as the Perfect
Governor, as he read Isaiah 33:22; For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is
our king; He will save us. http://www.eadshome.com/QuotesoftheFounders.htm The founding
fathers of the American Constitution divided the government up into the following three branches
to prevent the majority from ruling with an iron fist; legislative, judicial, and executive. The three
braches were created by the Constitution: Article 1, Legislative branch made up of the House and

Constitution, and appoints federal judges by advice and consent of the Senate (SITE, p.). The
judicial branch is comprised of the Federal, District, and Appeals Courts, which judge cases

Constitution. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080521155230AAz04SP Each of
the three branches is controlled by the other two in several ways. The president can veto a law
which was passed by Congress, yet Congress can override the veto with a two thirds vote of both
houses. Members of the Supreme Court, which are appointed by the president and approved by
Congress, can declare a law passed by Congress is unconstitutional. The U.S. Constitution, Article
1 Section 1, states that the legislative branch be created from two separate bodies: a House of
Representatives and a Senate, together is known as Congress. Legislative Branch The Legislative
branch has the power to pass federal laws, establish federal courts, override a Presidential veto, and
impeach the President. The size of the House of Representatives resulted out of the Great
Compromise. The number of Representatives is determined by Congress based on the state
population. At minimum each state would have one representative, with larger states having more.

2004 Boxing Day Tsunami
Good morning/Afternoon, Today I will be discussing the reasoning for why people live in disaster
prone areas and the detrimental effects it has on society. I will be mainly focussing on Tsunamis
and the effects it can cause when in action. The case study I have chosen to assist this task is the,
2004 Boxing Day Tsunamievent. Tsunamis can be shown as powerful waves that can rip through
anything taking anything down in its path. A tsunami cannot be prevented; however the impact of a
tsunami can be mitigated through community preparedness, timely warnings, and effective
responses.
A tsunami is a series of ocean waves that consist of very long wavelengths, they are caused by large
scale disturbances of the ocean, some including; earthquakes,

Ode On A Grecian Urn John Keats Analysis
In the poem Ode on a Grecian Urn, John Keats talks about three drawings that he sees on an
ancient urn. Throughout the poem, Keats uses rhetorical questions, imagery, and a change in tone
to explain to the readers what he sees on the urn and the feelings he is getting from the old urn s
pictures. He helps the reader understand there is a deeper meaning beneath the surface of the art
and how the urn is teaching life lessons while it stays there silent. In the first stanzalines 5 7, the
poem asks what leaf fring d legend haunts about thy shape of deities or morals or both... , and
this starts off the description of the first drawing Keats sees on the urn. The first stanza ends
with multiple rhetorical questions, and Keats uses these questions as a way to get the reader to
think about the images that he is seeing. He also personifies the urn and is asking these
questions to the urn. Even though the urn cannot respond, he still asks the questions to get the
reader to start visualizing what the drawing has. There are people present, but he s asking if they
are gods or mortal people. He s asking about the woman and what is going on between the men
and the woman, and he says what wild ecstasy (line 10) referencing a party that might be going
on. Now the reader can think about the kind of relationships the men and women had back then. It
could mean they would play with one another and be in a happy mood, or it could have been the

The Discovergence Project
Even at its best, the convergence project didn t account for all of the subtleties that would bring
its demise. According to an article by Ken Tysiac of the Journal of Accountancy, the project
formally ended in January 2013 when a joint meeting between FASB and the IASB resulted in an
announcement to continue increasing global comparability in different ways. Now, FASB
continues to strive for increased comparability among foreign standards to U.S. GAAP. The
FASB s strategy for doing so involves three methods. Firstly, FASB aims to develop high quality
standards for others to follow. In doing so, FASB intends to serve as a reference point and

across the globe, and it could be the best way to compare GAAPs across the globe. In an April
2015 study published by Tel Aviv University, researchers compared underpricing of IPO firms in
countries that use IFRS to IPO firms that used domestic GAAP. This study found that IFRS
adoption can generate a positive externality by enhancing comparability, but only when coupled
with high quality enforcement or strong firm level reporting incentives. This indicates that while
some countries would not experience improved comparability from IFRS adoption as a result of
systemic corruption, the United States still has potential to reap the benefits from adoption, in spite
of concerns from private

Politics And The United States Essay
Politics has always been a contentious and controversial issue in the United States; immigrants are
constantly discriminated from exercising their civic duty such as the right to vote and to be voted
for. Politics in American is divided based on ideological difference and approach on key issues,
which has led to the two major political parties the Republican Party (conservative) often referred as
the GOP and the Democratic Party (liberal). Both parties hasn t yet come forward to fully discuss
this discriminatory act against the immigrants. These are people with the same equal rights as the
citizens, yet little is done to quench the situation. According to the United Statescensus bureau,
there are about 42.2million foreign nationals residing in the United States, with about one in four
children under the age of 18 to having at least one foreign born parent. This makes to about 12%
of the U.S population, consisting mostly of Latino and Asian descent. This is a tremendous
number of people living in a country and can t be fully integrated and accepted into the society,
this is the same as the number of people living in Italy. It is, however, ironic that the same people
can serve in the military and other risk occupation in the country. These immigrants have mostly
lived their life in American, working towards the American Dream, pledging their loyalty and
allegiance to defend America, while upholding and abiding the laws and rules of the country.

The Effects Of Huey Long s Bills Affecting Our State
Has anyone here ever stopped and wondered why LSU is the size it is today or why there never
seems to be a shortage of schools wherever you go in the state. Whether you have or not, these
are both causes of Huey Long s bills affecting our state, also known as the reign of the Kingfish.
Huey Pierce Long was born on August 30, 1893, in the town of Winnfield located in Winn Parish
to Mrs. Caledonia Long and Mr. Huey Long, Sr. The young Huey was the seventh of nine children
(his younger siblings being named Earl and Lucille), and he lived the life of a farmer s child.
Although he lived in an environment that offered little time for leisure or even education, Huey s
parents emphasized education in each of their children s lives along with individual expression and
competition. The family was also a group of astute Christians with their daily Bible studies,
attending church twice a week, and frequent attendance to gospel revivals.
As Huey grew, there was no school for him to go too. Therefore, his mother home schooled him
with his eight siblings until a formal education was accessible. While being homeschooled, Huey
studied penmanship, writing, math, history, classic literature, and poetry along with the Bible
being the mainstay of his teachings. By age eleven, Long started going to a public school in fourth
grade. He was far ahead and bored by the teachings. He eventually persuaded his teacher to let him
skip seventh grade. He further continued onto the completion of

Exploitation of Imagery in The Dead and Araby by James Joyce
James Joyce, the author of both Araby and The Dead, exploits a sense of imagery throughout both
short stories. Araby and The Dead both share and differ from each other in the ways the imagery
is shown. The vivid imagery in Araby is applied to express feelings and expressions from one
character to another. The main character, an unnamed boy, has an undying admiration for Mangan s
sister. James Joycedescribes the boy s obsession with Mangan s sister in vast imagery. The Deadalso
includes many senses of imagery, but shows kinesthetic imagery rather than vivid imagery.
Kinesthetic imagery is an imagery that is portrayed through the movement and physical tension. In
The Dead, Gabriel, the main character, dislikes the country of Ireland he lives in, so he flees.
Throughout this, Gabriel describes how Ireland is boring and cold, displaying kinesthetic imagery.
The Dead and Araby both include vivid imagery, kinesthetic imagery, and auditory imagery.
Vivid imagery can be seen all throughout Araby. Vivid imagery is detailed writing that gives you
a sense of an image while you read. The story begins with North Richmond Street, being blind, was
a quiet street and continues to say, An uninhabited house of two storeys stood at the blind end,
detached from its neighbours in a square ground. The other houses of the street, conscious of
decent lives within them, gazed at one another with brown imperturbable faces ( Araby 1019). The
way this imagery is used shows

Sarbanes-Oxley s Code Of Ethics
First, we need to grasp how Codes of ethics were created and if formulated from a standard
boilerplate Ethics program. As stated by FindLaw.com under Corporate Ethics and Sarbanes
Oxley, in order to create code of ethics, an organization must define its most important guiding
values, formulate behavioral standards to illustrate the application of those values to the roles
and responsibilities of the persons affected, review the existing procedures for guidance and
direction as to how those values and standards are typically applied, and establish the systems
and processes to ensure that the code is implemented and effective. (Navran, 2003) A company
can work to promote ethical behavior; however, the process is not easily created from boilerplate.

Female Convicts As A Subject Of Historical Discussion
There has been a lack of interest in female convicts as a subject of historical discussion. The
history of female convicts has traditionally been incorporated into the framework of male convicts
with grave reference to the male convict experience. The convict women who were transported to
Australia on ships Elizabeth 5th and Henry Wellesley in 1836 faced extreme difficulty in
achieving freedom and reputability. It is the view of many historians that women were
incorporated into a pattern initially designed to accommodate men . This essay will investigate the
origins and characteristics of a sample of 10 female convicts arriving to Sydney in1836. The essay
aims to establish an alternative impression of the female convicts that were deemed damned
whores, skill less and prostitutes. In agreement with the 4 of the 5 studied historians, I hold the
view that the women were the victims of a repressive patriarchal society and the appellation of
female convicts as damned whores is totally inadequate. I believe they were not members of a
professional criminal class; they were humans with basic human needs, doing anything they could
to survive. The female convicts exported to Australia have been the subjects of investigation since
transportation commenced. Many historians set out to determine whether the female convicts were
vicious criminals or innocent victims . Garton s article researches the debate concerning the origins
and characteristics of the convicts being

Medieval Chivalry Essay
Western Civilization
Medieval Chivalry and Knighthood
During medieval times knighthood was a class culture, cherished and jealousy guarded by the
knightly caste. Knight had the honor of defending the king as well as their country. On the
bloody fields of battle a code of chivalry evolved that tempered anger and fury with mercy. It
created ways of turning the grim business of fighting into something tolerable, perhaps even
acceptable. Chivalry was not only looked upon as a code for war; it was looked upon as a setting
for stories of love and romance. Chivalry meant a higher social status as well as recognition.

Servants were taught exactly what it meant to be a knight. They were tight the responsibilities of
knighthood and what their duties exactly were in defending their lord.
Aside from the military training of a knight there was a certain set of manners and customs that
developed which is known as chivalry . Part of this was the cultivation of manners that should be
used in the courts. It furthered the idea of the social service as well as the ideas of loyalty, virtue
and generosity. It was the idea of noblesse oblige privileges, which came along with
responsibilities. Along with the courtly manners came the idea of romantic love and the chivalrous
devotion of a knight to his lady.
In the early history of knighthood there were two types of knights and two types of ceremonies
to convey honor. One of these knights was known as a knight of the sword; a knight who had
only been given an accolade. The other type was a knight who had been given a religious
ceremony before the accolade, these were known as knights of the bath.
There were also two ranks in dignity of knighthood. The first were youngsters aspiring to be
knights. They had to work for a prince or somebody f a high rank. The second rank was known as
the esquires. These men were

Offensive Speech
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a priority to protect all American citizens from offensive
speech/hate crime because it is believed its propagators are responsible for brainwashing Americans
into terrorism acts. All and sundry have the right to free speech as stated in the First Amendment of
the Constitution Congress shall make no law respecting...or abridging the freedom of speech, or of

government accountable and in check of its actions and ensures America is a state for the people
by the people themselves.
The federal government s perception of offensive speech has evolved over the years, for instance,
Manet s Olympia art masterpiece was considered offensive in the Nineteenth Century but in present
day it is regarded as a piece of great value and real craftsmanship. Just like art tastes and

Global Environmental Activism And Environmental...
Global Environmental Activism Vice President Joe Biden once said, No fundamental social
change occurs merely because government acts. It s because civil society, the conscience of a
country, begins to rise up and demand demand demand change. For society to rise up and demand
change like Joe Bidenis talking about there are ways to better understand what change needs to
happen and how to put that change into motion, especially with environmental sustainability. First
there must be an understanding of what ecological crises are and how they are negative affecting
the earth while exploring how sustainability can help with these crises. Then to better understand
sustainability one can explore sustainable practices around the world through case studies and even
local practices of sustainability. However one must understand the thought process behind
sustainability and how to make that work in favor of making change. This includes both the
Dominant Social Paradigm and the New Ecological Paradigm and how they both can be used to
facilitate change. Once there is an understanding of the problem and a plan to fix it then the action
must take place. While action can take many different forms, for many people it is structured as
environmental activism. To further study environmental activism once can use organizations such
as 350.org, Fossil Free, and The People s ClimateMovement to study how they are organized, their

Diaz has used is to order lesser inventory, more frequently. This would keep more cash in the
business, which would allow Ms. Diaz to take some salary for herself and to set up a payment
schedule for the business loan from her cousins. As noted by Sergeant (2009), it is best to keep
minimal inventory on hand. Excessive inventory, whether materials needed to perform services or
office supplies, ties up cash. More frequent orders would allow Ms. Diaz to order more accurately
based on actual consumption rather than estimating needs over the longer term, using the principles
of Just In Time (JIT) ordering. This alternative is dependent on shipping costs and order turn
around times as well as customer order lead times.
3Another alternative is for Ms. Diaz to keep only samples in her store. Customers pay a 50 %
deposit when they order the product and Ms. Diaz then orders the materials for that specific
order. When the materials arrive, Ms. Diaz fabricates the product and subsequently, delivery and
final payment take place. Again, she will use JIT principles to order only the materials for work
that has been ordered. In the situation where particular products are standard or quick turnover
items, an exception may be made to the no inventory rule. Again, the concept is that less cash is
tied up in inventory and is available for a salary for Ms. Diaz and her loan repayment.

Free Will Aristotle
In order to determine whether man has free will, it is important to define the notion of free will.
Free will, as defined by Kevin Timpe of the University of Tennessee at Martin, is the notion that
person has the capacity to choose his or her course of action. In basic terms, free will is the belief
that a person can make a choice without the choice being predetermined by a higher power. There
is a serious debate as to whether man has free willor if life is predetermined with choices already
made for a person. With such a contentious debate, there are various different beliefs on the
existence of free will within philosophy. In this paper, I will examine thinkers of Philosophy as well
as thinkers of the field of Jewish Philosophy. Philosophy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aristotle believes there is free will because of the belief in character of humans is a clean slate
and not predetermined. Also, he believes that nature helps us adapt our morals and virtues. To
add, Aristotle says that in metaphysics, an accident has no predetermined cause as it just
happens due to chance. Saadia Goan believes that there is free will for a few different reasons.
He outright explicitly says so in his writings as well as he believes that God would not have
given his the Commandments with punishments and rewards spelt out for humans if there was
not the ability to choose whether or not to follow God s rules. Alike Saadia Goan, Maimonides
says that if there were no free will, God would not have given us his commandments as a person
would just follow the predetermined fate that God would have set up which would be following
God s rules without any need to show the actual rules to the Jewish people. Overall, these three

mosque, and rarely outside of it. I think the art walk is a good place to express yourself fully,
since there are so many other things going on it wouldn t seem weird like it would in other
places. I also saw this in the demographic differences, since, like I mentioned in the observation
notes, most of the walkers were well dressed young white women, some with their boyfriends,
some with a few other friends. So those who looked alternative seemed most at home; others
were there in passing, observing the culture, enjoying the music and perusing the art. As someone
who didn t grow up anywhere near any kind of bustling city center, even the observers and the
observed seemed similar, in that they were at home in downtown Phoenix. A lot of people knew
exactly how to get around and navigate from stop to stop. The older folks on my shuttle had been
to a few art walks, too. This event seemed like a pretty good reflection of the art communities I d
encountered or heard of before: lots of young artists, pop culture, immigrants using and selling

The Batten Disease And Its Effects On The Nervous System

Batten Disease
The Batten disease is characterized as an autosomal recessive, fatal disorder that consists of
detrimental effects on the nervous system. Although the disease typically presents during
childhood, there are many forms that show signs at various ages. Batten disease, also known as
Spielmeyer Vogt Sjögren Batten disease, is named after the British pediatrician who first
correlated its symptoms with the disease progression in 1903. This disease is the most common
type of a group of disorders called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses, or NCLs. Although Batten
disease originally referred specifically to the juvenile form of NCL (JNCL), the term is now
increasingly used by pediatricians to describe all forms of NCL.
There are four main types of NCL: infantile, late infantile, juvenile and adult. The signs and
symptoms of these forms are extremely similar, with the main difference being the age at which the
disease presents.
Juvenile NCL is classified as the original Batten disease because it is the most common form of
the disorder and progresses less rapidly than other types. First symptoms of this progressive
disease typically begin to develop between the ages of four and seven, when a previously normal
child develops vision complications or seizures (Pearce, 2007). Although, in other cases, changes
may be more minor and manifest in behavioral changes, a decrease in learning capacity, or
clumsiness. However,

Lewis) One of the nation s most recognized novels is the renowned classic Till We Have Faces.
Written by C.S. Lewis, this classic is a one for one first person journalized memoir from the
perspective of a since exiled elderly ruler Orual, who has yet to meet her goals of castigating the
gods of her time. Throughout the novel, Lewis includes an interesting plot that encompasses a
strange but vivid course of elements. Moreover, Lewis manages to symbolically capture some of
the most fascinating aspects of human culture from past to modern day living. As for the story s

This process is completed by compelling the reader to include themselves in all manner of
physical senses. This will inevitably emulate an evocative inner world to the extent where the
reader can have an approximate understanding of the actual emotions and struggles dealt with by
the novel. On the second hand, with much trial and tribulation does much learning and upskill
come. As the title of the book suggests, Orual asks How can they (The gods) meet us face to
face till we have faces? (294). In a great deal of the book, Orual hides her ugliness behind a veil
which consequently causes her to be contextually blind from the aftermath of her actions. Thus,
the question implies the idea that one should come to a fuller understanding of themselves to
shave away their afflictions and illusions. This will allow others (Or the gods), to have the ability
to open up and express necessary material. Orual comes to this conclusion at the end of the book
during her judgment. A long tough ridden journey of trial and tribulation has eventually paid off
as greater knowledge and a wider perspective. To succor, many of the novel s symbols assist in
understanding the characters and plot. Like many other stories despite the novel s appalling plot,
some of the most prominent characters represent a somewhat Christ like exemplary figure in some
given manner. A prime example, for instance, is Psyche s appearance to

Major Work Review
Significance of title The significance of the title of Angela s Ashes is up for debate. The title refers
to McCourt s mother, Angela; however, the ashes can have several different meanings. The ashes
could be related to the destruction of her family and loss of her children: Margaret, Eugene, and
Oliver. When they died, Angela was deeply depressed. Throughout the book McCourt mentions that
his mother glares toward the ashes falling from her cigarettes. Ashes are associated with death, dust,
and cinders. When the family was living in Laman s home they must act like slaves when they
want something: Laman says I m a good boy and the bike is mine anytime I want it as long as
the chamber pot is empty and I m there to run to the shop for his cigarettes, go to the library for
whatever else he wants. He says, you have a great way with a chamber pot. He laughs and Mama
stares into the dead ashes of the fireplace (253). This passage describes what McCourt family is

How can we understand the world in which we find ourselves? In The Grand Design, a 2010 book
written by theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, two authors claim that
they have found a philosophical approach Model Dependent Realism (MDR) as the solution to this
fundamental question of philosophy. Combining the ideas raised from methodology of
mathematics and Physics, MDR leads a possible path to reconcile the uncertain nature of modern
science and the idealistic pursuit of absolute truth perhaps the theory of everything (TOE).
According to Hawking and Leonard, Model Dependent Realism is based on the idea that our brains
interpret the input from our sensory organs by making a model of the world. When such a... Show

According to the traditional conception of the universe, objects move on well defined paths and
have definite histories, Hawking writes, We can specify their precise position at each moment in
time.
The advent of modern physics, however, suggests that although such model explains everyday
observations, it fails to account for the behaviors of particles in a subatomic level. One of the most
famous is the Observer s Effect, according to which one can never determine a photon s path and
detect its existence at the same time, because while detecting its existence one has to collide it with
another particle and thus making it go to a certain direction. Therefore, when not detected, a light
beam behaves like a wave that goes to numerous possible paths simultaneously the light is at the
same time going through path A and non path A.
As the pluralistic view of MDR generates a freedom in explaining the reality, it also makes it
difficult for one to decide which model to choose. If several models of a set of events are offered,
one may ask, then what makes a more preferable model? According to Hawking, there are three
keys for a good model:
1.Occam¬¬ s Razor
2.Comprehensiveness
3.Preciseness and specificity
Occam s Razor means refers to simplicity when applied to qualitative principles. For instance, as
one looks at a pen, close his eyes, opens it again, and he sees the pen again, Occam s Razor makes

Clearly, the Medicaid program is ripe for a major overhaul, a task that the federal government
has thus far been unwilling to undertake. I chose this topic because I believe that the Medicaid
program can be rescued and revitalized by leadership; otherwise, it is likely to be eroded.
Medicaid is a government sponsored program whose objective is to provide patients with health
assistance upon meeting specific criteria. Medicaid is an insurance program that is available for
disadvantaged persons, including the elderly, who cannot afford health benefits because of low
incomes or other factors. This program is subsidized by government funds and in many instances,

There is a widespread belief that drug company s overcharge for their medicines in order to
increase profits. Many middle class and poorer families do not have health insurance because it s
too costly for them. It s a risk not to have it though, because if a person gets sick or injured, the
cost of a hospital stay is thousands per day. One group that is most affected of the high cost of
health care and medicines are senior citizens. It s gotten to the point for many of them that they
must choose between buying medicine or food, because they only have enough money for one of
them. The government needs to pass legislation and to work closely with the health insurance and
drug companies to develop a healthcare plan that successfully addresses the needs of all
Americans. This must include programs that enable the poor and elderly to receive the necessary
care needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The flaws in health care are a major priority that the
government needs to reform now. Although the government has already begun to change some of
the major problems, there is a lot of work that still needs to be done. Throughout history, both the
American citizen and the American government have often reacted to problems, crises, and social
injustices by instituting reform through new laws and practices. If America has done this before,
why shouldn t we be able to do it again?

The Civil Rights Movement Of America
America has experienced many periods in history that shape the social system we have today.
Many of our adopted attitudes and beliefs have outlined our present and nearing future into a
more liberal society. Following World War II, America was placed on a pedestal admired by the
world around it for success during the post war period. America had more internal damage that
was not reflective of the values the country was set on. Entering the post War period, a group of
college students advocated for domestic change writing a manifesto popularly known as the Port
Huron Statement on June 15 of 1962. Students desired change and became active in the Civil Rights
Movement in hopes to change the attitudes of the citizens in America. The Port Huron Statement
reflected ideas of these newly conscious middle American youth, increased Civil right activism,
and created the New Left in regards to form a more democratic society. The conscious youth
yearned for a more favorable democracy. Students were actively striving to create dialogue to
urge everyone to be more aware of the climate that exists. Born again Middle American, were the
words of Tom Hayden, former activist of the New Left, and author of the Port Huron Statement.
Shifting from ideals of a former left society into a new more liberal and optimistic system changed
the perceptions the new left had. In hopes to be the last generation in the experiment of living, they

Social networks have been increasingly used by people all over the world. Surging since the
creation of Facebook which now has over one billion active users. These social networks are
services that allow individuals to create an online profile and create their own group of friends
with whom to share a connection. They also allow users to share ideas, pictures/videos, posts,
events, activities and their interests with people in their chosen network. There are many
different social networks providing the same basic service to anyone who wishes to use them,
but also bringing the same problems and risks. Social networks were made for communication,
overcoming barriers like distance; however, it could also be that it is detrimental to
communication and reduces basic communication skills. Trends indicate that 47 percent of
American adults use a social network. A national survey in 2009 found that 73 percent of online
teenagers use social network sites, which is an increase from 55 percent three years earlier. It s
no wonder our real world social lives are seeing some changes. We once used to communicate
with a single person by telephone or letter; writing has now become a very social way of
communicating although it was once a solitary activity. Now, with one post we can reach
thousands of people. Personal barriers are quickly broken down through the use of social media.

Ohioan is credited with many invention that we use today and that many of us take for granted.
Countless hours of hard work went into everything he accomplished. That drive is what made him
the man he was and defined him as an individual.
Thomas Edison was born February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He was the seventh and last child of
Samuel Edison, Jr. and Nancy Elliot Edison. His parents had no special mechanical background.

Edison replied, Genius is hard work, stick to itiveness, and common sense . But his common
sense was very uncommon. More patents were issued to Edison than have been issued to any

idea. When Edison was 12 years old, he took a job as a train boy on the Grand Trunk Railway.
The train traveled from Port Huron, to Detroit, and back to Port Huron, all in one day. Thomas
sold newspapers and candy to passengers. He also printed a weekly newspaper, the Weekly
Herald. He spent all he earned on books and equipment for his chemical laboratory. After about a
year, he got permission to move his home science laboratory to the train baggage car. He did his
science experiments during the five hour layover in Detroit. But one day the train lurched, spilled
chemicals, and the lab caught fire. The train conductor threw Thomas and his chemicals off the
train. His next job was selling newspapers at stations along the railroad.
Nine years before Edison was born, Samuel F. B. Morse was famous for inventing the telegraph.
The telegraph sent messages over wires using Morse code . In Morse code, the alphabet and
numbers are written in combinations of dots, dashes, and short and long sounds. By the time
Edison began doing experiments, telegraph lines went across the country. He wanted to learn how

Swot Analysis Of Bean s New Multi Purpose Camping Unit Essay
With the introduction of a new product comes the potential for risk. Great care and thoroughness
should be taken to identify as many potential risks as imaginable since although it is not always
possible to control risk factors it is entirely possible to mitigate potential ill effects if a solid
strategy is in place. Some riskfactors identified may never actually be realized, but it is well
worth having a contingency plan in place rather than running the risk of causing detriment to the
financial well being of the business. Several possible risks have been identified in association
with the launch of L.L. Bean s new multi purpose camping unit, the first being the risk of losing
business to competitors with similar products. The mitigation plan to address this risk comes from
the very core of L.L. Bean s business. L.L. Bean will differentiate itself from its competitors by
offering a unique product of superior quality, shipped for free, and backed by their unsurpassed
customerservice and 100% satisfaction guarantee. This new product is multifunctional, and can
take the place of several other items. There is nothing quite like it on the market. L.L. Bean will
present a product of value to the customer, lessening the risk of competitors taking business away.
A second potential risk lies in marketing to the proper audience and reaching their target. The
mitigation plan to address this risk involves making use of L.L. Bean s already established

Minimalism Won T Work In Our Economy
Minimalism was first introduced in the early 1960 s as a new idea of thinking and a way of
creating sculptors and art work. Artist that were a part of this movement were called Minimalists
and took pride in allowing the materials they worked with to speak for themselves. Their works
involved extremely simple gestures and ideas. They started a movement of taking something
simple in its own form and finding the beauty in it. Currently there are groups of people

A short yes would be yes, but only in the short run. The real question should be in what area of

less of materialistic things and striving towards a more fulfilled life away from consumerism. If
more people practice minimalism, then less is consumed. But less of what? Less of fast moving
consumer goods. The disposable industry may get hit, as would fast fashion retail stores. This
would be the immediate effect. In the long term, even more durable goods would be affected. For
example, families may choose to drive the same car for another few years rather than replace it
after the usual 5 or 10. Thus, jobs in retail, automobile, manufacturing etc. would be affected but
would be required to adopted to the new demand of higher quality of goods. Therefore, taking their
business locally where the technology would be supported by more investments, if there is less
spending, then there is automatically more saving. Banks will now hold more deposits which they
can invest in other investments, ranging from energy, real estate and agriculture. Thus, creating
more jobs in these industries as they grow. Are economy has always struggled with unemployment

Music Synthesis Essay
The piece Touraman contains key structural principles associated with West African music despite
the different versions of Bembeya Jazz National and Lansana Diabate. The structural principles
include an ostinato pattern, improvisation, triple meter, ensemble stratification, and hocketing. In
the Bembeya version, the piece starts with a guitar flourish and then the test of the band comes
in. The bass is keeping the ostinato while the guitars interlock and at certain points improvise; the

The traditional version is likely to be played at a patron s event or accompanying a traditional
ceremony, while the modern version is more of a social music played at dance halls/concerts. A
couple reasons for the difference are the instrumentation and sociopolitical context of each
version. Diabate uses traditional jeli instruments, which are non electric and specific to jelis,
while Bembeya uses amplified big band instrumentation. A traditional ceremony in a village is
not going to use electric guitars and bass, just as a large cosmopolitan dance hall is not going to
use balas and Koran recitation. The two places are using music as a means for different ends one
as a vessel for history and one as a stamp of modernity. This leads to the sociopolitical context;
jelis are born into their profession and have certain rules around their music, while bands like
Bembeya Jazz National were formed by the state (Guinea) to play music around the country during
post independence. While state bands included jeli musicians, the instrumentation was different and
the purpose behind the music was different as well. State bands were Sekou Toure s way to
improve morale and encourage modernity during the unstable time following independence. So,

The Impact Of Computer Animation On The Entertainment...
EE Computer Animation From the very beginning of animation, artists created images on paper of
two dimensional animated characters. As time progressed, computers became an integral part of
people s lives. Technological advancements have allowed animators to use programs online that
would turn a two dimensional animated character or object into a three dimensional format. This
made it easier for animators to create whatever they wanted. Without the hassle of paper, these

evolution of movies dating back from 1908 to movies today involving Computer Generated Images

numerous potential applications owing to their distinctivetwo dimensional assembly and related
band structure. Graphenehas gained attention of many scientists since its innovation due to its
exceptional large surface area (2630 m2g_1),[11] high electrical conductivity at room
temperature[12,13](106 s cm 1), good mechanical properties (~1.1 TPa), fracturestrength[14] (125
GPa), breaking strength[15] (42 N m 1), excellent mobility as charge carriers[16] (~20 m2 V 1 s 1
), superior thermalconductivity (~5000 W m K 1 )[17], high carrier density (~1012 cm 2 ), good
optical transmittance (~97.7%),[18] specific magnetism,and chemical stability[1]. B
Graphene and its compositesare widely used in sensors, transistors, electronics, compositematerials,
photonics, bioengineering, energy production, and storage. Pure graphene is hydrophobic in nature
and cannotbe dispersed in aqueous solutions [19], therefore this factor limitsits application in water
purification. Chemically converted graphene, namely graphene oxide and reduced graphene
oxide, can be easily synthesized[20] and have shown numerous potentialapplications in water
purification [21]. For

Artificial Intelligence Is An Idea That Machines Can Think...
Artificial Intelligence is an idea. An idea that machines can think and make decisions just as us
humans can. With an ever growing knowledge of technology, we have seen a major impact from
Artificial Intelligence and it will continue to impact our lives. One future impact of AI is its use
in the judicial system. Judicial systems exist all around the world, in one form or anther, each
with different laws and policies, but all judicial systems can be significantly impacted by AI.
However, the question that arises is on a moral and ethical basis, should AI be used in the
judicial system? This issue brings much controversy as to whether AI can effectively make
correct decisions on its own based on the evidence that has been presented to them and in which
ways they are able to assist employees of the judiciary system. AI actually already play a role in
the judiciary process. They are used in evidence and document research to make lawyers jobs
much easier. I would suspect that AI use in data mining for e discovery might be one of the most
helpful advancements. This would include the ability to examine data for contextual relevance (5
Questions On Artificial Intelligence). E discovery is a very popular tool with lawyers as it is able
to perform tedious tasks, making their job much more time efficient. Artificial Intelligence has also
begun making serious strides in systems that can notify and update lawyer s research when relevant
changes to the law have occurred (5 Questions On

What Is The Effect Of Door-Holding Behavior On Door...
Introduction (half page max.) Method Participants Participants who were observed are students
and staffs in university of Toronto. Materials A sign with Be kind, hold the door was used in this
experiment to see the influence on the behaviour of participants. Procedure The whole experiment
is divided into three phrases. From first ten minutes, participants are observed in terms of door
holding behaviour. Then, the target behaviour(whether they hold the door) are recorded. In next 10
minutes, a sign is used to examine the difference in frequency of the target behaviour. In last 10
minutes, the sign is removed and the target behaviour is observed. Researchers need to observe
participants without any physical and verbal interference during the process. After data are
collected, researchers need to use statistical method to analyze it. Experimental Design DV IDV In
this study, quasi experimental method was used. The independent variable is the presence of the
sign, and the dependent variable is the door holding behaviour. Researchers aim to examine the

Simpson (2007) added that multidisciplinary input co ordinated by a case manager is a key feature
of most case management models in Australia and that case managers are more likely to be mental
health professionals (Simpson 2007). Contemporary mental health services use several models of
case management, such as the brokerage, clinical, strengths, rehabilitation, intensive case
management and assertive community treatment (ACT) models.
Preston amp; Fazio (2000) described one of case management models known as the intensive case
management program as a mobile multidisciplinary team, consisting of a psychiatrist, community
mental health nurses, social workers and occupational therapists. Elder, Evans amp; Nizette (2007)
stipulated that the majority of treatment occurs within the community, including medication
management and mental health examinations. Elder and his colleagues identified operational
definitions of the intensive case management as low patient to staff ratio, most services provided in
the community, rather than in the office, assignment of patients to a dedicated case manager, time
unlimited service and most services provided directly by the intensive case management team and
not brokered out (Elder, Evans amp; Nizette 2007).
Henderson et al (2008) commented that this model was designed for those clients who are defined
as high service users that is, the severely mentally ill and has been found effective in engaging

Essay Deforestation of The Pacific Northwest
Deforestation of the Pacific Northwest
One of the most controversial areas associated with the global problem of deforestation is the
Pacific Northwest of the US. The problem can be broken down into several issues that all tie in
together. These include the near extinction of the Northern Spotted Owl, the business aspect of
logging versus the environmental aspect, and the role of the government in this problem. In 1973,
the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed. This enabled the
Dept. of Commerce and Dept. of the Interior to place species, either land or marine, as either
threatened or endangered. Under these terms species could no longer be hunted, collected, injured
or killed. The northern spotted owl falls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Seeing an animal in an artificial environment can certainly not be compared to witnessing an
animal in its natural environment. In my opinion, there can be no price put on the existence of
any species on this planet, plant or animal. To think that money has become such an influential
part of our society that companies are willing to sacrifice a species in order to make a profit. The
northern spotted owl is only one of many species that are on the verge of extinction do to
deforestation. Another important consideration in the deforestation of the Pacific North Coast is
logging as a business. The investors of a publicly owned company sole concern is the growth of
their stock, and this for lumber companies is accomplished by harvesting trees in the most efficient
and cost effective manner. Clear cutting old growth is the best way to accomplish this. This
approach leads to quick financial gain but is not best for the long term or the trees. It is the
companies that use this process that is the most unfavorable to the forests and contributes to
deforestation the most. Another approach uses wise management techniques to maximize the long
term profit of the forest. Guest speaker Jerry
Howe would fall into this category as a private land owner. As a land
steward, he believes he can do what he wants with his land. The term
steward is used

The Millennium Development Goals ( Mdgs ) Essay
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were established in 2000 to determine, focus on and
put into action steps that will fight eight key areas to help underdeveloped countries. The eight
targeted areas which are poverty, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health,
disease, the environment and global partnership place attention on areas that will help the
improvement and betterment of underdeveloped countries.
MDGs goals and objectives are clear and concise with a development plan in place to make
changes with underdeveloped and middle income countries. Equally are all eight of the goals, but
focusing on poverty, hunger and child mortality, will bring these two goals to the forefront.
MDGs for poverty and hunger are looking for decreases by half between 1990 and 2015 in the
amount of people in underdeveloped countries who has an income of fewer than $1 per day (UN
Department of Public Health, 2010). Additionally, between the same timeframe, goals are set to
decrease by half the amount of people who experience and suffer from hungriness (UN
Department of Public Health, 2010). These goals were put into place in 2000, reviewed in 2015
and an updated plan to target these goals were set for 2020 (United Nations, 2015). Even though
many countries are a part of the MDGs, practical and reasonable goals and objectives can be met
with great emphasis, attention and action. The MDGs, even though, all goals and objectives are
different, they literally all

Joran Van Der Sloot Case Study
On Monday, July 4, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe were released, but Joran van der Sloot was
detained for an additional sixty days. In order to aid in the search, the Royal Netherlands Air Force
deployed three F 16 aircraft equipped with infrared sensors, without result. Satellite photos were
also compared with photographs taken more recently in an attempt to find unexpected shifts of
ground that might be Holloway s grave(Disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 2015). A small pond
near the Aruba Racquet Club close to the Marriott Hotel beach was partly drained between July 27
and 30 after an individual came forward. The gardener claimed to have seen Joran van der Sloot
attempting to hide his face, driving into the Racquet Club with the two Kalpoes brothers... Show

The two brothers were released on the following day. The prosecution appealed the Kalpoes
release. That appeal was denied on December 5 with the court stating that the file against the
suspect did not contain direct indications that Natalee passed away due to a violent crime. Van
der Sloot was released without charge on December 7, due to lack of evidence implicating him.
No further appeals were sought out (Disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 2015). Prosecutor
Hans Mos declared the case closed and no charges would be filed due to lack of evidence. Even
though the case was closed the prosecution continued an interest in the Kalpoe s and Joran van
der Sloot. The interest remained due to an alleged chat room message, where one of the three
had stated that Holloway was dead. This was contested by Deepak Kalpoe s attorney, who stated
that the prosecution, had misconstrued a reference to a teacher who had drowned as one to
Holloway. Attorney Ronald Wix also stated, Unless (Mos) finds a body in the bathroom of one of
these kids, there s no way in hell they can arrest them anymore (Disappearance of Natalee

Violence And Violence In Townie By Andre Dubus III
Townie, written by Andre Dubus III, is a memoir that portrays the detailed events, good or bad, of
Andre Dubus III s life as an adolescent until maturity. Dubus describes himself gaudily, explaining
his battles as a boy growing up in the Boston area. Growing up without a cookie cutter father, Andre
never had a strong and omniscient figure to help him throughout childhood. The only thing that
became a common theme in his life was violence. Violence is present in his lifetime through many
forms, starting as him getting beaten up by bullies and ending with him getting in fights as an adult
with little to no motive. This continual violence brings out a fury and terror that Andre has to fight
against his entire life. While he does eventually become content with his life without fighting, he
initially has to fight through many obstructions to get to this point. These hindrances, though from
an outsider s perspective are tragic, shape him into the person he is today. The memoir begins its
timeline in Andre s adolescence. Going to school, he is petrified of violence and refuses to
participate in any fights, despite them consuming his surrounding environment. It wasn t abnormal
for a fight to occur after school, and everyone in the area loved it. Throughout the multiple
neighborhoods he lived in, and at schools he attended, there were always kids that kept their eye
out for someone smaller than them to beat up and he was the perfect target. One of his very first

Palette Of King Narmer Essay
This artwork is known as the Palette of King Narmer. It is from Hierakonpolis in Egypt
(Predynastic period), made in circa 3000 2920 BCE, and is also a 2 1 feet high slate carved
from siltstone. This palette shows the unification of the two kingdoms of Egypt the Upper and
Lower Kingdoms under King Narmer, the founder of the first Egyptian dynasty. This theory is
not clear however, as some think it is not a record of true events and is instead an artwork
depicting Narmer s control over that Egyptian region. The intended audience for this palette was
perhaps an elite one, as not only was it utilitarian, but it s detailed design makes it considered a
ceremonial object. This piece of art, regardless of the factual basis, was made to show some sort
of union, and was made when King Narmer was ruling over Egypt.

On one side of the palette, known as the Serpopard side, the pharoah Narmer can be seen
walking along with many other figures in a large register towards the top of the palette. His
large size compared to the others shows hierarchy of scale, which signifies his importance and
power compared to ones surrounding him. His attendant seen next to him also carrying his
sandals show that he is stepping on holy ground; Narmer is a powerful holy figure, and
wherever he steps, the land becomes holy. Narmer himself is wearing the red crown of Lower
Egypt on this side of the palette, and the white crown of Upper Egypt on the other side, showing
his authority over the two sections of Egypt and the sense of unification his leadership brought,
since he ruled over both. On both sides of the palette, he wears a bull tail, which signifies power in
the sense that man has triumphed over nature, in this case the animal known as a bull. On the

The Friar and the Pardoner The Canterbury Tales, retold by Geraldine McCaughrean, is
composed of many stories told by different characters on the road to Canterbury. On their
pilgrimage, each of the characters tells a different story in a contest to win a free dinner when
they get to Canterbury. Many of the tales have similar morals, but the tellers are very different,
such as the tales of the Friar and the Pardoner. Though both of these tales have a similar plot and
can be interpreted in a similar way, their tellers are significantly different. Although the Friar and
the Pardoner are very different people, they both have a similarly structured story, using a
symbolic demons as the antagonist, and with very similar plotlines. In the Pardoner s Tale, three
unintelligent men want to find and murder someone named Death who is killing many people.
The three men stumble upon a pot of gold, which happens to be Death s pot of gold. They all
split the money in the pot and become rich. While one of the three leaves to buy wine to
celebrate their fortune, the two guarding the gold become greedy and plot to kill the other so
they can keep his gold. However, the one who left had a similar idea, and poisons the wine he
brings to dinner. That night, the two who guarded the gold kill the other one, but then drink the
poisoned wine to celebrate. They all die, and Death takes back his gold. In the Friar s Tale, a

Nothing feels quite like waking up refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead of you. However,
while we all know how important sleep is, many of us still struggle to fall asleep at night.
Moreover, I am willing to wager that many of us also always seem to wake up fatigued, no matter
how long we have slept. If you have trouble sleeping it is possible that you may have one of
several common sleeping disorders.
The following guide is here to help you identify why you are struggling to get the satisfactory sleep
you need (and deserve).
Monkey Brain Syndrome A common disorder that owes its namesake to restless Buddhist monks.

Insomnia Insomnia is a sleeping disorder that is characterized by a general difficulty falling and/or
staying asleep. It can range in its effects and severity, though people with insomnia have one or
more of the following symptoms:
A difficulty falling asleep.
Waking up multiple times during the night, and struggling to go back to sleep.
Waking up early in the morning for no apparent reason.
Feeling fatigued upon waking.
Irritability.
Problems with concentration or memory.
Insomnia can range from being transient or acute (short term) to chronic condition (long term).
If you suspect you may have Chronic Insomnia, then that is best handled by a health professional as
chronic insomnia can be either a symptom of, or an eventual contributor to, severe health problems
such as depression, chronic stress, and serious physical health problems.
Acute Insomnia is generally related to stress factors, both emotional and physical. Generally short
term insomnia can be handled through simple lifestyle adjustments and successfully recognizing
what stress factors are causing poor sleep quality.

Taking a Look at Pneumonias
Pneumonias are respiratory infections that lead to inflammation of the lung structures such as the
alveoli and the bronchioles (Porth, 2011). It is also a significant cause of morbidity and mortality
among all age groups. The very young, the very old or those with chronic disease are more
susceptible to the disease. According to Driver (2012), 1.4 million people die each year because of
pneumonia. Pneumonias are categorized based on where the infection is acquired, types of
organisms that cause the infection, and the location of the lung that infection occurs. The presence
of signs and symptoms depends on types of pneumonia and hosts defense mechanisms and is the
result of the destruction of the alveoli and impairment of gas exchange. Types of Pneumonias
Pneumonias are respiratory infections that lead to inflammation of the lung structures such as the
alveoli and the bronchioles. There are many types of pneumonias and their classifications depend on
the source of infection, types of organisms, and the area in the lung (Porth, 2011). Community
acquired pneumonia occurs when a person gets pneumonia infection from organisms found in the
community. These organisms could be bacteria or viruses. However, a pneumonia that occurs as a
complication in hospital settings such as post surgery or artificial ventilation is called hospital
acquired pneumonia (Driver, 2012). Most hospital acquired pneumonias are bacterial and difficult
to treat since many of them have acquired

Media Violence And Stereotypes
Children who are exposed to various types of violence from a young age are more likely to initiate
and behave aggressively towards others. Kids may also take part in aggressive behavior if they feel
they identify themselves with hostile characters in the media. A study conducted on youth
investigated the relationship between prolonged displays towards media violenceand identification
with fictional characters (Mrug, Madan, Cook, Wright, 2015). The results concluded that with
increased exposure to high action movie scenes, there was a greater identification with the fictional
characters presented. A 1999 school shooting, at Columbine High School in Colorado, involved

Why Is Monty Python So Popular
Most comedy fans today can t see a can of spam, a dead parrot, or hear the sound of clanging
coconuts without immediately thinking of Monty Python. The British comedy group, Monty

that would influences comedians and entertainers for years and years to come. The troupe consisted
of six men: Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Jones, and Terry Gilliam

Carry On offered a coarse form of humor and starred actors Charles Hawtry, Joan Sims, Kenneth
Williams, Sid James, and Hattie Jacques. These men tackled revered British institutions in a
satiric and slapstick fashion the army, the medical profession, classical history, patriotism, leisure
life, and sports (Landy). The Carry On series also spoofed genre forms of empire films, medical
melodramas, and historical films. The Carry On films had many similarities to Flying Circus
including, the looseness of narrative structure, strings of unrelated and physically pointed gags, a
focus on institutions and a bawdy emphasis on gender and class stereotypes, a consistent refusal of
the realism of character acting, and the insertion of already familiar, usually crude jokes (). Both the
Carry On films and Monty Python discussed social institutions in a mocking fashion. Monty Python
often relied on direct address to the audience, often calling attention to the silliness of the actions
performed and to the artificialness of the medium which is something that is directly correlated to

  • 2. Essay on Walt Whitman Walt Whitman In parting with traditional poetic formalities, Walt Whitman alleviated a burden that impeded his ability to achieve full poetic expression. To Whitman, the strict boundaries that formal meter, structure, and rhyme imposed set limits on his stylistic freedom. This is not to say that these limits prevented Whitman from conveying his themes. Rather, they presented a contradiction to which Whitman refused to conform. In Whitman s eyes, to meet these formal guidelines one would also have to sacrifice the ability to express qualities and passion of living men. Thus, Whitman contested traditional poetic protocol because it added a layer of superficiality that concerned itself with creating perfect rhythmical, metrical, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This meant that stanzas consisted of a predetermined amount of lines or that the poem had a predetermined amount of stanzas. Augmenting this formal structure were predetermined rhyme schemes (such as abab cdcd efef gg in Shakespearean sonnets). Based on the above, we can describe traditional poetic etiquette as adhering to the suggested formal patterns predetermined by the tradition of British poetry. Just in reaching the above conclusion, a problem arises that all poets, not just Whitman, face when trying to conform to this style. This problem is that all of these rules are cumbersome. It is difficult for a poet to convey the theme of a poem when he or she is concerned with whether or not each word fits into a designated formal pattern. Yet, some would argue that this is what makes poetry such an elegant art form. Surely, Whitman recognized the genius found in Shakespeare s sonnets and other constitutive examples of traditional British poetry. However, whether or not Whitman recognized the genius of great traditional British poets, is inconsequential. What did matter was whether or not Whitman felt that this style was appropriate for him. The answer is no. Whitman found problems not simply with the fact that clinging to the traditional style might be burdensome (surely this would not have been an insurmountable task for Whitman), but his main issue with traditional style concerned the ornamental effect of formal regularity: In ... • 3. The Level Of Competition In The Soft Drinks Industry The level of competition in an industry determines the number of profits made by players in the industry. An industry with a high level of profits is likely to attract many players which erode the profits made by firms gradually. A firm seeking to venture into a new industry should evaluate the level of profits in an industry as well as how intense competition is in the industry before making a move. Porter s five forces model provides a comprehensive framework that can be used to evaluate how intense the competition is in the industry. The soft drinks industry is an industry that is very profitable but also exhibits cut throat competition. Coca Cola and Pepsi companies are the players with much dominance in the soft drinks industry. This paper explores the competition between Coca Cola and Pepsi companies dubbed cola wars in the context of Porter s five forces model. Threat of New Entrants (Low) This force analyzes the ease or difficulty of a new player entering an industry. Industries that are profitable but have minimal barriers to entry attract many players who make the profits to plummet. Profits decrease when a large number of firms compete for a limited market share (Hill Jones, 2010). Therefore, existing players, particularly in a profitable industry, should create extensive barriers to entry to deter new firms from entering the industry. Coca Cola and Pepsi companies are the dominant players in the soft drinks industry (Yoffie, 2011). The two companies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Legislative Branch The Legislative branch has the power to pass federal laws, establish federal courts, override a Presidential veto, and impeach the President. • 7. Ode On A Grecian Urn John Keats Analysis In the poem Ode on a Grecian Urn, John Keats talks about three drawings that he sees on an ancient urn. Throughout the poem, Keats uses rhetorical questions, imagery, and a change in tone to explain to the readers what he sees on the urn and the feelings he is getting from the old urn s pictures. He helps the reader understand there is a deeper meaning beneath the surface of the art and how the urn is teaching life lessons while it stays there silent. In the first stanzalines 5 7, the poem asks what leaf fring d legend haunts about thy shape of deities or morals or both... , and this starts off the description of the first drawing Keats sees on the urn. The first stanza ends with multiple rhetorical questions, and Keats uses these questions as a way to get the reader to think about the images that he is seeing. He also personifies the urn and is asking these questions to the urn. Even though the urn cannot respond, he still asks the questions to get the reader to start visualizing what the drawing has. There are people present, but he s asking if they are gods or mortal people. He s asking about the woman and what is going on between the men and the woman, and he says what wild ecstasy (line 10) referencing a party that might be going on. Now, FASB continues to strive for increased comparability among foreign standards to U.S. GAAP. The FASB s strategy for doing so involves three methods. • 10. Politics And The United States Essay Politics has always been a contentious and controversial issue in the United States; immigrants are constantly discriminated from exercising their civic duty such as the right to vote and to be voted for. Politics in American is divided based on ideological difference and approach on key issues, which has led to the two major political parties the Republican Party (conservative) often referred as the GOP and the Democratic Party (liberal). Both parties hasn t yet come forward to fully discuss this discriminatory act against the immigrants. These are people with the same equal rights as the citizens, yet little is done to quench the situation. According to the United Statescensus bureau, there are about 42.2million foreign nationals residing in the United States, with about one in four children under the age of 18 to having at least one foreign born parent. This makes to about 12% of the U.S population, consisting mostly of Latino and Asian descent. This is a tremendous number of people living in a country and can t be fully integrated and accepted into the society, this is the same as the number of people living in Italy. It is, however, ironic that the same people can serve in the military and other risk occupation in the country. These immigrants have mostly lived their life in American, working towards the American Dream, pledging their loyalty and allegiance to defend America, while upholding and abiding the laws and rules of the country. • 11. The Effects Of Huey Long s Bills Affecting Our State Has anyone here ever stopped and wondered why LSU is the size it is today or why there never seems to be a shortage of schools wherever you go in the state. Whether you have or not, these are both causes of Huey Long s bills affecting our state, also known as the reign of the Kingfish. Huey Pierce Long was born on August 30, 1893, in the town of Winnfield located in Winn Parish to Mrs. Caledonia Long and Mr. Huey Long, Sr. The young Huey was the seventh of nine children (his younger siblings being named Earl and Lucille), and he lived the life of a farmer s child. Although he lived in an environment that offered little time for leisure or even education, Huey s parents emphasized education in each of their children s lives along with individual expression and competition. The family was also a group of astute Christians with their daily Bible studies, attending church twice a week, and frequent attendance to gospel revivals. As Huey grew, there was no school for him to go too. Therefore, his mother home schooled him with his eight siblings until a formal education was accessible. While being homeschooled, Huey studied penmanship, writing, math, history, classic literature, and poetry along with the Bible being the mainstay of his teachings. By age eleven, Long started going to a public school in fourth grade. He was far ahead and bored by the teachings. He eventually persuaded his teacher to let him skip seventh grade. • 12. Exploitation of Imagery in The Dead and Araby by James Joyce James Joyce, the author of both Araby and The Dead, exploits a sense of imagery throughout both short stories. Araby and The Dead both share and differ from each other in the ways the imagery is shown. The vivid imagery in Araby is applied to express feelings and expressions from one character to another. The main character, an unnamed boy, has an undying admiration for Mangan s sister. James Joycedescribes the boy s obsession with Mangan s sister in vast imagery. The Deadalso includes many senses of imagery, but shows kinesthetic imagery rather than vivid imagery. Kinesthetic imagery is an imagery that is portrayed through the movement and physical tension. In The Dead, Gabriel, the main character, dislikes the country of Ireland he lives in, so he flees. Throughout this, Gabriel describes how Ireland is boring and cold, displaying kinesthetic imagery. The Dead and Araby both include vivid imagery, kinesthetic imagery, and auditory imagery. Vivid imagery can be seen all throughout Araby. • 13. Sarbanes-Oxley s Code Of Ethics First, we need to grasp how Codes of ethics were created and if formulated from a standard boilerplate Ethics program. As stated by FindLaw.com under Corporate Ethics and Sarbanes Oxley, in order to create code of ethics, an organization must define its most important guiding values, formulate behavioral standards to illustrate the application of those values to the roles and responsibilities of the persons affected, review the existing procedures for guidance and direction as to how those values and standards are typically applied, and establish the systems and processes to ensure that the code is implemented and effective. The history of female convicts has traditionally been incorporated into the framework of male convicts with grave reference to the male convict experience. The convict women who were transported to Australia on ships Elizabeth 5th and Henry Wellesley in 1836 faced extreme difficulty in achieving freedom and reputability. It is the view of many historians that women were incorporated into a pattern initially designed to accommodate men . This essay will investigate the origins and characteristics of a sample of 10 female convicts arriving to Sydney in1836. The essay aims to establish an alternative impression of the female convicts that were deemed damned whores, skill less and prostitutes. In agreement with the 4 of the 5 studied historians, I hold the view that the women were the victims of a repressive patriarchal society and the appellation of female convicts as damned whores is totally inadequate. I believe they were not members of a professional criminal class; they were humans with basic human needs, doing anything they could to survive. The female convicts exported to Australia have been the subjects of investigation since transportation commenced. Many historians set out to determine whether the female convicts were vicious criminals or innocent victims . It was the idea of noblesse oblige privileges, which came along with responsibilities. Along with the courtly manners came the idea of romantic love and the chivalrous devotion of a knight to his lady. In the early history of knighthood there were two types of knights and two types of ceremonies to convey honor. One of these knights was known as a knight of the sword; a knight who had only been given an accolade. The other type was a knight who had been given a religious ceremony before the accolade, these were known as knights of the bath. There were also two ranks in dignity of knighthood. It s because civil society, the conscience of a country, begins to rise up and demand demand demand change. For society to rise up and demand change like Joe Bidenis talking about there are ways to better understand what change needs to happen and how to put that change into motion, especially with environmental sustainability. First there must be an understanding of what ecological crises are and how they are negative affecting the earth while exploring how sustainability can help with these crises. Then to better understand sustainability one can explore sustainable practices around the world through case studies and even local practices of sustainability. However one must understand the thought process behind sustainability and how to make that work in favor of making change. This includes both the Dominant Social Paradigm and the New Ecological Paradigm and how they both can be used to facilitate change. Once there is an understanding of the problem and a plan to fix it then the action must take place. While action can take many different forms, for many people it is structured as environmental activism. The Batten Disease And Its Effects On The Nervous System Neuroscience 4100 Kristen Miller Extra Credit Paper Batten Disease The Batten disease is characterized as an autosomal recessive, fatal disorder that consists of detrimental effects on the nervous system. Although the disease typically presents during childhood, there are many forms that show signs at various ages. Batten disease, also known as Spielmeyer Vogt SjГ¶gren Batten disease, is named after the British pediatrician who first correlated its symptoms with the disease progression in 1903. This disease is the most common type of a group of disorders called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses, or NCLs. Although Batten disease originally referred specifically to the juvenile form of NCL (JNCL), the term is now increasingly used by pediatricians to describe all forms of NCL. There are four main types of NCL: infantile, late infantile, juvenile and adult. The signs and symptoms of these forms are extremely similar, with the main difference being the age at which the disease presents. Juvenile NCL is classified as the original Batten disease because it is the most common form of the disorder and progresses less rapidly than other types. First symptoms of this progressive disease typically begin to develop between the ages of four and seven, when a previously normal child develops vision complications or seizures (Pearce, 2007). The advent of modern physics, however, suggests that although such model explains everyday observations, it fails to account for the behaviors of particles in a subatomic level. One of the most famous is the Observer s Effect, according to which one can never determine a photon s path and detect its existence at the same time, because while detecting its existence one has to collide it with another particle and thus making it go to a certain direction. Therefore, when not detected, a light beam behaves like a wave that goes to numerous possible paths simultaneously the light is at the same time going through path A and non path A. As the pluralistic view of MDR generates a freedom in explaining the reality, it also makes it difficult for one to decide which model to choose. If several models of a set of events are offered, one may ask, then what makes a more preferable model? According to Hawking, there are three keys for a good model: 1.Occam¬¬ s Razor 2.Comprehensiveness 3.Preciseness and specificity Occam s Razor means refers to simplicity when applied to qualitative principles. Their works involved extremely simple gestures and ideas. They started a movement of taking something simple in its own form and finding the beauty in it. If more people practice minimalism, then less is consumed. But less of what? Less of fast moving consumer goods. The disposable industry may get hit, as would fast fashion retail stores. This would be the immediate effect. In the long term, even more durable goods would be affected. For example, families may choose to drive the same car for another few years rather than replace it after the usual 5 or 10. Thus, jobs in retail, automobile, manufacturing etc. would be affected but would be required to adopted to the new demand of higher quality of goods. Therefore, taking their business locally where the technology would be supported by more investments, if there is less spending, then there is automatically more saving. • 34. Music Synthesis Essay The piece Touraman contains key structural principles associated with West African music despite the different versions of Bembeya Jazz National and Lansana Diabate. The structural principles include an ostinato pattern, improvisation, triple meter, ensemble stratification, and hocketing. In the Bembeya version, the piece starts with a guitar flourish and then the test of the band comes in. The bass is keeping the ostinato while the guitars interlock and at certain points improvise; the trumpet improvises as well. The traditional version is likely to be played at a patron s event or accompanying a traditional ceremony, while the modern version is more of a social music played at dance halls/concerts. A couple reasons for the difference are the instrumentation and sociopolitical context of each version. Diabate uses traditional jeli instruments, which are non electric and specific to jelis, while Bembeya uses amplified big band instrumentation. A traditional ceremony in a village is not going to use electric guitars and bass, just as a large cosmopolitan dance hall is not going to use balas and Koran recitation. The two places are using music as a means for different ends one as a vessel for history and one as a stamp of modernity. This leads to the sociopolitical context; jelis are born into their profession and have certain rules around their music, while bands like Bembeya Jazz National were formed by the state (Guinea) to play music around the country during post independence. While state bands included jeli musicians, the instrumentation was different and the purpose behind the music was different as well. Growing up without a cookie cutter father, Andre never had a strong and omniscient figure to help him throughout childhood. The only thing that became a common theme in his life was violence.
