Epiglottitis is a bacterial infection of the epiglottis and surrounding tissues, most commonly caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b. It presents with a sudden onset of sore throat, fever, drooling, and difficulty swallowing in children ages 1-5 years old. On examination, the epiglottis appears red and swollen, often requiring intubation. Treatment involves antibiotics like ceftriaxone to treat the infection along with steroids to reduce swelling and prevent the potential need for tracheostomy. HiB vaccination has greatly reduced the incidence of this disease.
