1) The document outlines the daily class plan which includes an icebreaker, discussion on the potential of live television, analysis of Jon Stewart's appearance on CNN's Crossfire show, student reactions to the video, and rhetorical analysis of Glen Beck.
2) It provides context on Jon Stewart's 2004 appearance on CNN's Crossfire where he criticized the show's hostile debate format.
3) Students are assigned to read about the male gaze in advertising and post in the class forum defining a rhetoric term and giving an example. They are also told to continue working on their inquiry project.
An introduction to film/cinema as narrative for a 7th grade ELA class using "Citizen Kane" as our text. Lots about artistic intentionality, identity, and thinking of theme.
I revise this every year and there are many ideas for add-ons. Happy to share but also curious about feedback ideas.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

2. TODAY
1)Icebreaker
2)Quick commentary: the potential of
live television
3)The more you know: The Daily Show
and Crossfire
4)Jon Stewart on Crossfire (video)
5)React (writing)
6)A little more Jon Stewart; rhetorical
analysis of Glen Beck
7)Homework
3. Icebreaker
A simple one… this might be the last time
we actually use class time to break the ice.
I haven’t decided. :)
But here’s today’s prompt: what’s one
thing unrelated to school or work that you
do every single day? Try to be a little
creative and avoid things like “texting” or
“check my mail” or “brush my teeth.”
4. Television
We’ve talked a bit already about analysis
of video, but I want to spend some time
today deliberately lingering on television.
More specifically, I want to look at one of
the traits of TV that once made it
phenomenal but has slowly moved to the
backseat: live programming.
When something is “live,” there is little if
any time to adjust if something doesn’t
go according to plan. This can lead to
hilarity, but it can also lead to amazing
moments.
5. If you saw…
Last week I posted a “shoot” interview
from an airing of WWE Raw to sort of give
you a preview of what was coming today
in class. This was an instance where a
performer was given a live microphone
and allowed to go out and say whatever
he wanted to a live audience in front of live
cameras with approximately 2 seconds of
tape delay as the only safeguard.
You can go see what CM Punk did with
that chance, if you haven’t. But now…
6. Jon Stewart
Jon Stewart is now known, at least to
some degree, both for his political
activism and his job as host of Comedy
Central’s The Daily Show.
There was a time, however, when
Stewart was thought of primarily and
almost exclusively as a comedian. It was
during this time that he was booked to
appear on the CNN program Crossfire to
talk about his book America: The Book.
It was 2004.
7. Crossfire
Since the show has been off the air for
several years, most of you probably don’t
know CNN’s Crossfire, but the premise
was simple. It was hosted by a liberal,
Paul Begala, and a conservative, Tucker
Carlson. They would debate issues from
“both sides of the aisle” and often had
guests who they’d interrogate from both
sides of the aisle.
Basically, they’d yell at each other and
insult the opposite side’s views.
8. When Jonny met Paulie and Tuck
One day in 2004, Crossfire booked Jon
Stewart, comedian, to talk about his book
and his evening show that some felt
might be a little more political than it
appeared on the surface. And this
happened:
9. What?
Take the next ten minutes (or so) and write
about what you just saw, thinking about all
the things we’ve discussed in class.
Things I can tell you:
1) Begala and Carlson did not expect that
2) Jon Stewart planned it
3) Jon Stewart didn’t tell anyone he
planned it
Go forth and be rhetoricians!
10. Let’s talk about it
So what’s going on here?
This is a placeholder slide so we can
discuss your writing.
11. And if Jon were here…
This is a rare case where I can actually
show you someone we’re talking about in
class doing what we’re talking about in
class.
First, just ever so quickly (we won’t watch
all of this), observe Glen Beck.
12. And here…
…is a completely partisan, dripping with
irony, somewhat mean spirited rhetorical
analysis of Beck’s style of presentation.
14. Homework
Read for class: The Male Gaze in
Advertising
Forum Post: Go here:
http://www.virtualsalt.com/rhetoric.htm
and pick a term we haven’t talked about
in class. Define it in your own terms and
offer an example.
Keep working on your inquiry two
project!!
