Engineering materials are the materials used for engineering works and equipment and are classified as either metallic or non-metallic. Metallic materials are further divided into ferrous, containing iron, and non-ferrous, not containing iron, with common ferrous materials being cast iron and steel and common non-ferrous materials being copper, zinc, and lead. Non-metallic materials do not contain metals and examples include timber, abrasives, silica, ceramics, glass, graphite, and diamond.
