The document discusses brushless DC motors and their use in robotics. It begins with an introduction to robots and the types of motors commonly used, including brushed DC motors, brushless DC motors, servo motors, and stepper motors. It then focuses on why brushless DC motors are preferable for robotics uses. The document goes on to explain the principle of operation, torque-speed characteristics, and applications of brushless DC motors, particularly their use in radio controlled planes. It concludes with some disadvantages of brushless DC motors.

3. INTRODUCTION:-
Robots have become a subject
of great interest nowadays.
It is actually a man-made
mechanical device which can
move themselves.
Its motion can be
modelled,planned,sensed,actuate
d & also programmed.

5. WHY ONLY BRUSHLESS MOTORS ?
DC Brushed Motors DC Brushless Motors
High gear reduction & hence
more wear & tear.
Torque is very less.
Heating due to sparking in
brushes.
Lasts longer.
Higher torque over static &
dynamic motion.As a result
higher speed achievable.
No such problem arises.

6. Brushless DC Motors
Similar to AC synchronous motors.
Basic principle is similar to a DC motor.
Rotor is permanent magnet & stator with energized
windings.
Electronic control replaces the function of brushes &
energize the proper windings.
Uses a hall effect sensor-a sensor determining position
of rotor to decide which coil is to energize.

7. Brushless motors
are two types-
1) In-runner.
2) Out-runner.
Out-runners have
permanent
magnets on the
outside &
housing in the
axle.
In-runners have
permanent
magnets inside &
non-rotating
housing.

8. Principle of operation of a BLDC
motor:-
Operation of BLDC is based on the simple force
interaction of a permanent magnet & an
electromagnet.

Brushless motors(Out-runners) are used in large propellers due to more
torque & less speed.
ESCs used for providing an electrically generated three phase electric power
which is the source of energy of the motor.
Brushless controllers switch power between combinations of poles & thus
modulates the speed according to the given signal.
The input signal is pulse position modulated signal.
ESCs are programmable through a programming card & through transmitter
& receivers.
12. Disadvantages of BLDC motor:-
Torque ripple will occur.
Expensive due to permanent magnets.
Temperature limit on rotor because of magnets.
Demagnetization possibility limits the input
current of BLDC motor.
