Early English attempts to establish colonies in North America included Roanoke Island and Jamestown. Sir Walter Raleigh established the Roanoke colony in 1585, but the settlers mysteriously vanished when the leader John White returned from England three years later. In 1607, the Virginia Company founded the Jamestown settlement with 144 men. However, the swampy land lacked good farmland and the colonists struggled with disease, conflicts with Native Americans, and a lack of effective leadership. By 1608, only 38 settlers had survived at Jamestown.
