Plymouth Colony was settled in 1620 by English Separatists who arrived on the Mayflower to establish a religious community with beliefs different from the Church of England, as they had faced persecution in England. Upon arrival, they signed the Mayflower Compact which established a system of self-government based on majority rule to set laws and order for the colony. Many died the first year from disease and exposure to the harsh New England winter.
