Presented by Siu Fun Wong and Jason Yamaki Vertical- Pharmacy An every 3-week integrated examination is used for summative assessment in each of the trimesters throughout the didactic curriculum. To assure each of the examinations will appropriately represent the breadth, depth and content taught in each course, an examination blueprint is used to guide faculty from different courses to contribute to the integrated examinations and to evaluate its implementation. Each question submitted to ExamSoft™ are coded with 7 categories that include subjects related to the ACPE 2016 pharmacy accreditation standards and cognitive level. These serve as the tracking mechanism to meet the parameters in the exam blueprint. An item analysis will ensure the submitted questions are achieving the agreed upon outcomes and those considered satisfactory will be placed in the CUSP examination question bank for repeated use every 2-3 years as appropriate. On an annual basis, quality assurance review of the ExamSoft™ examination question bank will be conducted to assure the questions are current in content and in appropriate composition as guided by the CUSP Examination Blueprint. At the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1) Develop a personalized Exam Blueprint (Integrated vs. traditional examinations) 2) Design Examsoft™ category system to align with the Exam Blueprint 3) Maintain and optimize the use of the ExamSoft™ examination question bank

The program chose ExamSoft as the vendor to provide secured testing and assist in categorizing and documenting compliance with standards. The Categories feature offers users the ability to close the loop on accreditation standards and outcome documentation. During the implementation process, several solutions were identified while some challenges remain. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the faculty development team’s experience with creating, tagging and verifying outcomes and accreditation standards using the ExamSoft Categories feature. Additionally the process for using the Categories feature in ExamSoft to comply with standards across all levels of curriculum mapping will be demonstrated. The information in this presentation can be applied by any program seeking an efficient method of mapping the relationship between exam questions and accreditation. Implementing and Launching Rubrics in a Clinical Setting

Presented by Jayzona Alberton and Jorge Godinez Vertical- Dental The College of Dental Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences has been actively utilizing ExamSoft rubrics since the beta-test phase of the feature’s launch. After implementing ExamSoft rubrics in multiple parts of their curriculum through a full year, CDM’s Office of Academic Affairs worked diligently with Dental Center administration to develop a plan for launching this feature throughout the clinic. After months of preparation, the college went fully electronic with their clinical exams both at the Dental Center and at off-site clinics for the community-based dental education portion of their curriculum. Now, faculty are trained in grading rubrics using ExamSoft spontaneously at the clinic during students’ procedures on their patients. The journey to this pinnacle was quite a challenge, but is improving many aspects of the dental program at WesternU tremendously. Faculty, staff, and administration can generate more robust reports of institutional learning outcomes and competencies that combine both written exams with performance-based assessments. Incorporation of sound curriculum evaluation measures and related analysis can provide evidence to support changes within the curriculum that close content gaps, as well as support for individual interventions for academically at-risk students as early as possible in the course sequencing, to avoid the prospect of a “too little, too late” response to learning deficits. To promote the process of continual program evaluation and quality improvement, faculty are better defining the data they analyze to drive fine-tuning of curricula, with the ultimate goal of achieving all desired curriculum outcomes. However, many programs lack the assignment of these analysis tasks within their curriculum committee framework, and as a result, changes to testing policy may be implemented without much evidence-based reason, and may be carried out in a way that is irrespective of other curriculum revisions. In best cases, this lack of consistency with the analysis as well as the lack of attention to curriculum impact once these testing policies are implemented results in the lack of any observable increase in desired outcomes like improved pass rates. At worst, this situation results in the “wheels spinning” scenario, where faculty serving on the curriculum committee appear to make random but unrelated policy changes throughout the academic year, with no real clarity about what outcomes they are expecting from these interventions, and no way of accruing data after the fact that can be analyzed for any evidence of improvement. This webinar will address a common trend that is increasingly being adopted by faculty to avoid this type of scenario: the formulation of a testing committee. The discussion will encompass methods used to evaluate both total program outcome achievement and individual student performance, using methods for both internal and external curriculum evaluation, and will identify how faculty can incorporate consequences associated with students’ scores and other evaluation data within their testing policies that have been shown in research studies to improve outcomes. Another key role of the committee is the design and implementation of all testing-related policies within the curriculum, generally with approval of the overall curriculum committee, but also with input from the student affairs committee, as these testing policies relate to admission, progression, and graduation policies that are generally within the oversight of the student affairs committee. Finally, the testing committee will be described as the regulator of the school’s testing style manual with respect to item creation, editing, and removal of test items from the item bank used for teacher-made exams, based on a systematic review of item analysis data in concert with sound item writing skills designed to produce test items at the application-and-above level within the cognitive taxonomy.

Learning occurs when student have to assess another student’s work because it forces them to analyze the finer nuances of the assignment in order to grade and provide effective feedback to a peer. One of the most valuable resources of this evidence is a collection of student performance data from teacher-made and standardized exams used throughout the curriculum. How can faculty demonstrate that the exams they deliver to students are both reliable and valid? The purpose of this webinar is to discuss how faculty can incorporate assessment data and related analysis into their curriculum evaluation processes; establish that the teacher-made and standardized exams administered throughout the program are reliable and valid; and include assessment findings in the accreditation self-study that demonstrate compliance with nationally-recognized education standards in nursing.

ExamSoft Implementation at St. George’s University – A Recipe for Success

Presented by Sally-Ann Clement, Teah Cummings, Avril Best, Leisha Griffith-Mark, and Wayne Radix Vertical- Medical In an effort to find a user friendly and cost effective solution to administering examinations St. George’s University (SGU) researched several computer based options. After careful consideration, ExamSoft was identified as the best solution for its needs as it allowed for the easy handling of all major aspects of the exam process. The decision to transition was also based on the fact that computer based examinations have become the standard format for administering exams in higher education. The rollout of the computer based exams at SGU was phased, with an initial pilot in three School of Medicine (SOM) courses. Through our ExamSoft Pilot, the University was able to identify key resources needed as well as resolve major issues in preparation for a university wide rollout of the software. The Course Directors/Pilot Users were not only instrumental in this process but also helped boost the confidence of their peers some of whom had reservations about the transition process. After successful completion of the Pilot, the university felt confident about extending the use of ExamSoft to other schools specifically the School to Veterinary Medicine (SVM) and later the School of Arts and Science (SAS). Exam Managers found the unique capabilities of the software such as the use of categories, reports and the availability of certain security features for example exam password, snapshot etc. to be very useful. Additionally, the availability of the highlight features as well as the question review pane provides an enhanced exam experience. The development of student policies and guidelines for Exam Managers were beneficial as they provide clear procedures for the use of ExamSoft at SGU. This proposal will not only focus on both the successes and challenges SGU faced during the implementation of ExamSoft but will also focus on how faculty and students were engaged throughout the process. At the end of the session, participants will be: Equipped with guidelines for the successful implementation of ExamSoft at an educational institution.

Building a multiple grader rubric and assigning graders to student groups will be demonstrated. Procedures to track and categorize student performance data will be discussed and strategies for faculty collaboration will be shared. Physical and technological logistics associated with utilizing multiple grader rubrics for practical assessments will be outlined for replication. Utilizing audience response technology and small group discussion, participants will be actively engaged in an exchange surrounding the topics presented and how they can be applied in their academic setting. Restructuring a Capstone Course Based on Longitudinal Assessment of Module Exams

Presented by Karen Kier Vertical- Pharmacy Restructuring a Capstone Course Based on Longitudinal Assessment of Module Exams ExamSoft was utilized for all therapeutic modules for a 2-year cohort of pharmacy students. Prior to the students final capstone module, a pretest was given to the students (n=154). The pretest concept for the capstone module had existed for 15 years. This is the first time the pretest was constructed from the cohort of exams for those students. Previous pretests were derived by faculty teaching in the modules. The current pretest was based on evidence from ExamSoft categories and performance reports that allowed module coordinators to select questions which demonstrated a weak knowledge base for the class. The average score on the pretest was a 32% compared to past years performance of 55 to 63% averages. This demonstrated that the college did not have a good plan to help students remediate in their areas of weakness. If the student passed the module, they moved on to the next module but did not master material. The capstone course coordinator then created a dynamic class schedule that immediately took this information into account in designing the 7 week module for spring semester. The capstone module faculty created review materials on Moodle with review quizzes on ExamSoft. Any student that had a red weakness area on their Strengths and Opportunities report was required to do the review material and quizzes for each area. Any student could take advantage of this opportunity as well. Student progress was tracked in ExamSoft and Moodle. Post-test results are pending an April 17th exam and will be available for this session. The results of this cohort has started discussion on how to remediate students sooner in the modules. In addition, the faculty continue to use the rationale sections of the exam to provide immediate feedback to students on exams. The use of ExamSoft categories as well as student reports has created an opportunity to dialogue with students and faculty to improve student outcomes. At the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1) Understand the importance of tracking longitudinal outcomes to dynamically change a course to best suit student needs 2) Discuss the use of ExamSoft categories to pull relevant data for assessing outcomes 3) Discuss the ability to create an online review session and ExamSoft quizzes to allow students to improve knowledge base based on their individual ExamSoft Strengths and Opportunities Report

Assessing the Impact of Peer Instructor Generated Formative Self-Assessments

Presented by Melinda Lull, Jennifer Matthews, and Jane Souza Vertical- Medical/ Nursing In a graduate level course, peer instructors were trained to create online quizzes for use as optional formative assessments by students. These quizzes were created using ExamSoft, and designed to reflect the format of summative in-class exams. Quizzes were made available to students, and performance was recorded. At the conclusion of each semester, quiz and exam psychometrics were analyzed and compared to determine the effect of quizzes on exam performance in the courses. Comparisons revealed improvements in scores between quizzes and exams and a benefit to students utilizing the resources, making them a useful instrument in the self-directed learning toolbox. Self-testing, a type of formative assessment, provides students with a study tool that can help identify areas of weakness. Despite their usefulness, this type of additional learning resource can often be time consuming for faculty members, limiting its successful use across multiple courses. The use of peer tutors has been shown to provide advantages to faculty members as well as students utilizing tutoring services and the tutors themselves. This session will instruct participants on the implementation and analysis of self-assessments using ExamSoft. At the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1) Demonstrate the process of enrolling peer instructors as exam item writers. 2) Demonstrate the use of the internal comments box as a means of providing feedback to peer instructors. 3) Describe the process for analyzing ExamSoft data in the comparison of quiz and exam performance.

Gillespie, Ph.D., Professor, Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research, St. John's University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences Professional health science programs must now explicitly identify interprofessional education (IPE) activities that provide unique opportunities for student-to-student engagement. Offering IPE activities is essential to advance education in these fields. We actively identify IPE possibilities and a methodology to assess them using ExamSoft’s categorization system. Our faculty are content experts and are in the best position to categorize test-items with national exam blueprints, the essential hierarchical ontologies that drive programs. Blueprints contain goals, outcomes, knowledge domains, professional skills and attributes often required for proficiency in specific health care professions. Mapping between different program blueprints allows the College to identify parts of the curriculum that are shared between programs and are ideal targets for IPE efforts. We provide worked examples where we observed overlapping terms that serve as an impetus for faculty and administrators to capitalize, creating IPE opportunities. By the very nature of this activity, overlapping terms are associated with test items that can be used to establish a pre-IPE activity baseline, as well as, assess the IPE activity itself. Synergistic assessment of shared goals and outcomes (using ExamSoft categories) helps us prepare our students to be outstanding health care professionals in the 21st century.

In this webinar, we will discuss how a team of medical and biomedical faculty and staff developed an assessment monitoring system utilizing the category tool within ExamSoft. Presentation of critical outcomes will include: (1) the system design and implementation plan- including faculty recruitment and the roles and responsibilities of those involved with the project, (2) the development of targeted reporting - both for university leadership and students, and (3) how results from the project were used to improve discipline- and organ system-specific curriculum initiatives within the college. The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth. Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority. Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages. Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. • The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
