ExamSoft Implementation at St. George’s University – A Recipe for SuccessExamSoft
Presented by Sally-Ann Clement, Teah Cummings, Avril Best, Leisha Griffith-Mark, and Wayne Radix
Vertical- Medical
In an effort to find a user friendly and cost effective solution to administering examinations St. George’s University (SGU) researched several computer based options. After careful consideration, ExamSoft was identified as the best solution for its needs as it allowed for the easy handling of all major aspects of the exam process. The decision to transition was also based on the fact that computer based examinations have become the standard format for administering exams in higher education.
The rollout of the computer based exams at SGU was phased, with an initial pilot in three School of Medicine (SOM) courses. Through our ExamSoft Pilot, the University was able to identify key resources needed as well as resolve major issues in preparation for a university wide rollout of the software. The Course Directors/Pilot Users were not only instrumental in this process but also helped boost the confidence of their peers some of whom had reservations about the transition process. After successful completion of the Pilot, the university felt confident about extending the use of ExamSoft to other schools specifically the School to Veterinary Medicine (SVM) and later the School of Arts and Science (SAS).
Exam Managers found the unique capabilities of the software such as the use of categories, reports and the availability of certain security features for example exam password, snapshot etc. to be very useful. Additionally, the availability of the highlight features as well as the question review pane provides an enhanced exam experience. The development of student policies and guidelines for Exam Managers were beneficial as they provide clear procedures for the use of ExamSoft at SGU.
This proposal will not only focus on both the successes and challenges SGU faced during the implementation of ExamSoft but will also focus on how faculty and students were engaged throughout the process.
At the end of the session, participants will be:
Equipped with guidelines for the successful implementation of ExamSoft at an educational institution.

Successfully Delivering Secure Online Exams at ScaleAshley Wright
In Semester 1 of this academic year (2013-14) Newcastle University successfully delivered 71 exams, with more than 9000 student sittings across a multitude of venues across campus. The only additional software cost has been a site-wide Respondus Licence used to convert existing formatted questions and produce backup paper exam copies. By building on Blackboard's existing functionality, we have provided a streamlined process for building and running secure, locked down online exams with additional reporting and feedback functionality.
This presentation outlines how the OLAF (Online Assessment and Feedback) project has evolved since 2007 to its present state today. The stakeholders involved in a delivering a complex cross-institutional service and the tools we have developed to assist us to keep track of multiple exam delivery across multiple PC venues. Our technical support team have developed a free in-house solution for providing a locked down browser, using Firefox portable and a compatible extension. During the session we will explore the pros and cons of Blackboard as an assessment system, outlining what can be achieved and where we are hitting limitations and whether we can do anything about these limitations.
The existing assessment tools in Blackboard can meet the majority of needs for online examinations at present. We can use exported data from Blackboard to produce additional reports and student feedback. Yet there are limitations to the testing that can be conducted through Blackboard that will stop some users from fulfilling their requirements. There are still features that other software offers that staff would like to use, such as breaking tests into sections, more advanced text marking and so on.
Should institutions be aiming for more online assessments with more sophisticated features, or should we stick with what the majority need to use?
During the session we will encourage debate about short term/long term needs and strategies

Implementing and Launching Rubrics in a Clinical SettingExamSoft
Presented by Jayzona Alberton and Jorge Godinez
Vertical- Dental
The College of Dental Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences has been actively utilizing ExamSoft rubrics since the beta-test phase of the feature’s launch. After implementing ExamSoft rubrics in multiple parts of their curriculum through a full year, CDM’s Office of Academic Affairs worked diligently with Dental Center administration to develop a plan for launching this feature throughout the clinic. After months of preparation, the college went fully electronic with their clinical exams both at the Dental Center and at off-site clinics for the community-based dental education portion of their curriculum. Now, faculty are trained in grading rubrics using ExamSoft spontaneously at the clinic during students’ procedures on their patients. The journey to this pinnacle was quite a challenge, but is improving many aspects of the dental program at WesternU tremendously. Faculty, staff, and administration can generate more robust reports of institutional learning outcomes and competencies that combine both written exams with performance-based assessments. To learn more about launching ExamSoft rubrics in a simulated or clinical setting, check out WesternU CDM’s 90-minute interactive session!
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1) Develop a plan to implement ExamSoft rubrics on a large scale at their institution and in a clinical setting.

Developing a system function future state for online management of assessmentBlackboardEMEA
The Assessment Journey Programme at Sheffield Hallam University has been formed to investigate, define and deliver the changes needed to provide a seamless and improved assessment experience for students and staff, and improve the operational effectiveness of assessment and feedback delivery.
Working with students and staff as well as engaging with the JISC EMA Project, the Programme has developed a clear picture of what we currently do, and has identified good practices and the changes needed in order to shape the institutional vision for assessment and the technology required within it.
During this workshop, we will share Sheffield Hallam University’s principles and vision for assessment and the resulting lifecycle developed to frame and describe the assessment experience of each stage of the lifecycle and for each set of stakeholders, and how this will develop the Programme’s shape, the sequence of delivery and its component projects. We will also report on the proposed technological future state for online management of assessment, which builds on successful initiatives at the University to research, develop and promote efficient and effective assessment and feedback strategies through the use of Blackboard solutions. Using the lifecycle and the future state model, participants will be asked to reflect on how these look for their own institutions, and consider how Blackboard might realise the future state for online management of assessment through existing functionality or bespoke customisations.

In order for data to have a meaningful and lasting impact on the academic program, it is important to solicit diverse stakeholder perspectives and provide opportunities for faculty engagement at every stage of the assessment process development. Developing collaborations in order to achieve incremental goals helps to establish a pattern of success and creates a vision of future accomplishments and an institutional culture of assessment. Each institution has unique needs. This workshop is designed to provide small group interaction to help attendees target optimal strategies doe their institutions.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1) Identify why stakeholder buy-in is important
2) Formulate effective strategies for engagement of faculty and administration
3) Identify principles of Improvement Science to support a process of curriculum review
4) Review longitudinal assessment data to identify curricular gaps
5) Utilize assessment data to develop improvement plans

Presented by Dan Thompson, Sr. Manager of Education and Assessment, ExamSoft Worldwide
Computer-based assessment software is traditionally used to assess student performance, not necessarily drive new learning. Why stop there? There is an untapped potential in how these programs are utilized to affect more than just student evaluation. Educators can work smart and not hard by using assessment software as a method of content delivery, while still taking advantage of the valuable exam delivery and data aggregation features. This presentation addresses the process of using computer-based assessment software as a way to deliver content while simultaneously assessing students and providing immediate feedback on their performance.

Offering IPE activities is essential to advance education in these fields. We actively identify IPE possibilities and a methodology to assess them using ExamSoft’s categorization system. Our faculty are content experts and are in the best position to categorize test-items with national exam blueprints, the essential hierarchical ontologies that drive programs. Blueprints contain goals, outcomes, knowledge domains, professional skills and attributes often required for proficiency in specific health care professions. Mapping between different program blueprints allows the College to identify parts of the curriculum that are shared between programs and are ideal targets for IPE efforts. We provide worked examples where we observed overlapping terms that serve as an impetus for faculty and administrators to capitalize, creating IPE opportunities. By the very nature of this activity, overlapping terms are associated with test items that can be used to establish a pre-IPE activity baseline, as well as, assess the IPE activity itself. Synergistic assessment of shared goals and outcomes (using ExamSoft categories) helps us prepare our students to be outstanding health care professionals in the 21st century.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
