What is Directed Activities Related
Texts (DARTs)
DARTs are activities which get students to
interact with texts and challenge students to
engage with texts.
Purpose of Directed Activities Related
Texts (DARTs)
• Their aim is to improve students'
reading comprehension and
• To make them critical readers.
That can be done by individual
students or in groups
Type of Texts
• Poems
• Short stories, novels and plays
• Newspaper articles
• Pamphlets etc,
• Passages from history, geography, science
etc textbooks.
Advantages of DARTs
• Improves reading comprehension.
• Aware of how texts are constructed.
• Promote problem-solving and thinking skills.
• Provide active learning situations(4 Cs)
(collaborate/communicate/creative/critical)
Advantages of DARTs
• DARTs also help students learn how to use texts
without plagiarizing them.
• Improves students own writing.
• Interacting with text rather practicing poor reading
skills.
• Useful to introduce new topic or revise/consolidate a
topic at the end of the unit.
DARTs
• Underlining
• Labeling
• Completion of activities with disorder texts
• Predicting
• Segmenting
• Text Completion
• Table completion
• Diagram Completion
• Flow chart Presentation
• Cause and Effect

In a reference to the PPP and PML-N, Khan said the
opposition parties just want an NRO from us," he said. "I
want to give them a message: 'open your ears and hear this:
you can come out on the streets. We will give you
containers and give you food. You can do whatever you
want in the assemblies... (But) no one will get an NRO'," he
was quoted as saying by the Dawn. "No corrupt person will
be let go," Khan said, recalling that he had been elected by
the nation on the promise that he will "put the corrupt
people in jails".
Segmenting
Means of Communication
Devices used to talk, or to send message one end to other, or from one person to
other are called means of communication. There are many types of means of
communications like News Paper, Telephone, Mobile, TV, Internet etc. Telephones and
mobiles are most commonly used means of communication. They are not only very
fast but also link far distant location within no time. Letters are most common means
of communication. Postcards, inland letters, envelops, postage stamps, etc., are used
for writing letters. Newspapers are used to carry news of all that is happening all over
the world. The news paper and magazines are printed in different languages. In
modern age, Internet is very cheap and reliable mean of not only for communication
but also useful for employment and education. Internet has brought the whole world
to a very small workplace. E-mail can be used to send small or bulk of information to
any part of the world.

GLOBE- As our Earth is very big in size we cannot see the entire Earth at one time so
we use smaller models of the Earth to study its features. These models of Earth are
called GLOBE.
We use globe because it is the most accurate way of showing the World’s surface and
it also shows exactly how continents and oceans appear on Earth’s curved surface.
It is difficult to carry globe around and we cannot have a glance of the whole Earth at
one time.
MAP- A map is a drawing of the Earth’s surface or a part of it. Map can give more
details than a globe. A map can show the whole world at a glance. A map can be big or
small.
A book of maps is called ATLAS. Large wall maps can be hung on a wall for better
understanding of the world around us.Maps are not as accurate as globes because
they are flat but we prefer to use maps because they are easier to carry as they can be
folded.

The Story of Cotton
Cotton : From Seed to Fabric
Cotton grows best on fertile, well-drained soil. Cottonseed
are planted and plants are irrigated, fertilized and weeded,
as needed, during the growing cycle. After 16-20 weeks,
cotton ball are harvested by machine. Cotton is cleaned and
baled in 500 pound bales. Clean cotton which is called ‘lint’
is carded, combed and spun into yarn. Cotton yarn is dyed
and treated. Looms weave cotton yarn into fabric. People
use cottonseeds to make oil for cooking, cosmetics, and
soap. Livestock eat cottonseeds and the leftover parts of
cotton plants.

Participants’ Expectations
• I would like to connect with SIPD as I will enhance my
skills regarding professional development.
• To create interest among students on the basis of
new techniques and improve motivational skills.
• Understanding of directed activities
• Strategies and activities related to the topic.
• I want to gain idea of integrating the content with
other subjects .
DART?
• You don't need fancy equipment and resources
to use DARTs. DARTs can be used in under-
resourced schools.
• DARTs can make textbooks more interesting.
• Prepare them for the types of tasks they will
encounter in other subjects. For example,
filling in tables, labeling diagrams, completing
Venn diagrams etc.

  • 27. Compare and Contrast GLOBE- As our Earth is very big in size we cannot see the entire Earth at one time so we use smaller models of the Earth to study its features. These models of Earth are called GLOBE. We use globe because it is the most accurate way of showing the World’s surface and it also shows exactly how continents and oceans appear on Earth’s curved surface. It is difficult to carry globe around and we cannot have a glance of the whole Earth at one time. MAP- A map is a drawing of the Earth’s surface or a part of it. Map can give more details than a globe. A map can show the whole world at a glance. A map can be big or small. A book of maps is called ATLAS. Large wall maps can be hung on a wall for better understanding of the world around us.Maps are not as accurate as globes because they are flat but we prefer to use maps because they are easier to carry as they can be folded.
