A throwback to Simple Sentences
One subject and one verb
An independent clause
A complete thought
It is just not knowing sentence
structures or types. The core is utilizing
them to create smooth pieces of writing
that leave a lasting impression on the
audience. It makes the writing more
engaging for the reader.
Significance of sentence structure
The moon was bright, we could see our way.
Hydrogen has weight, you can’t weigh it on
ordinary scale.
The moon was bright.
We could see our way.
and
Hydrogen has weight.
You can’t weigh it on ordinary scale.
but
Two or more separate, independent clauses,
put together is a compound sentence.
Compound sentence
So, and is used to join them to make a compound
sentence. And is the coordinating conjunction.
Conjunction is the word which connects
two ideas, two simple sentences into one
e.g. She cooked. ( independent Clause)
He cleaned. (independent Clause )
Connect these two independent clauses and
make a single sentence.
She cooked and he cleaned.
We need or to join them to make a
compound sentence. Or is the coordinating
conjunction.
Conjunction is the word which puts two
ideas, two simple sentences into one
e.g. I will go shopping. ( independent Clause)
I will watch a movie. (independent Clause )
We want to connect these two independent
clauses and make a single sentence.
I will go shopping, or watch a movie.
Conjunctions are classified into two categories:
Salma’s a highly intelligent girl, but she’s
rather lazy.
But - Contrast
Do you like chocolate or vanilla
better?
Or - Choice
The weather was cold, yet bright
and sunny.
Yet - Contrast
The virus cannot live in immunized
individuals, nor in nature.
Nor - Choice
Earning a college degree requires
a lot of dedication, and it costs a
lot money.
And - Addition
I go to the library, for I love to read.
For – Cause
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
FANBOYS
I know you must be tired,
so I will let you rest.
So -consequence

2. Subordinating Conjunctions
After, Although, As if, As long as, Though,
Because, Before, Even though, Until, When,
Where, While
He won so many tournaments when he was young
Wise men speak because they have something to say. Fools
speak because they have to say something. Plato
You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.
We can never obtain peace in the outer world we make
peace within ourselves
We have to wash clothes, the maid will not
come.
We can never obtain peace in the outer world .
we make peace within ourselves.
until
We have to wash clothes.
The maid will not come.
if
A Complex sentence is made up of an independent clause
joined by one or more dependent clauses.
An independent clause can stand alone as a
sentence, but a dependent clause needs help, it
is dependent , not with a complete thought.
Complex sentence
When the cake is brown, remove it from the oven.
dependent clause independent clause
Errors students make with sentence types:
1. Including a coordinating conjunction without a
comma in a compound sentence
Teacher had taught so he announced the test.
Teacher had taught, so he announced the test.
2. Inserting a semi colon without complete clauses.
The sky; is clear the stars are twinkling.
The sky is clear; the stars are twinkling.
3. Lacking a comma after an introductory clause.
They spoke to him in Urdu but he responded in English.
They spoke to him in Urdu, but he responded in English.
1. Usage of subordinating conjunction and the dependent clause is to establish a
time, a place, a reason , a condition, or a comparison of the main clauses
Points to note:
e.g. They rested when evening came.
e.g. Humans can’t see well in the dark, nor can they hear sounds
more than about 1km away.
2. All the clauses in a compound sentence are equally important, the clauses
express related thoughts. They are connected by conjunctions, and they tell us the
simple relationship between them.
Now, it is your turn.
