DIGI-PAK ANALYSIS
1
CHARACTERS
The front and back cover are two places
that feature a character. They are the
same man wearing a white shirt on a
dark background smoking. Featuring
direct address on the cover, the model
looks to be general member of the
public and this is against conventions to
not use a model, but for the genre of
the music which is indie rock it is very
expected for them to go formatting
different. The model creates are very
relaxed sense about the image, like the
image isn't staged, and this does go
against convention of mainstream front
covers as they are usually heavily set up
and studio based
NARRATIVE
from this I could suggest that it
looks like the members have been on
a night out. It is very casual and looks
like it was a snapshot from the night
out and less of a shoot for the
digipak. I think that it works well
with the band and in a whole the
cover internals and cd all have
connotation of a "lads night out" and
we are looking into the bands lives,
which is something that I think works
well.
SETTING
similar to the narrative it looks to be
outdoors, and after some research it
is a fan that the members of the
band went on a night out with. The
front cover and back cover are the
same image with the model doing a
slightly different pose, both still very
candid. In an interview the lead of
the arctic monkeys Alex Turner
explained that the photo was taken
outside after a shower in a smoking
area and ended up making the final
digipak. This image encompasses the
relaxed and candid moment that the
model is showing.
TECHNICAL
There isn't anything incredible
technical about these images.
The look to be possible have
taken on film cameras as they are
slightly grainy and have an odd
hues about them. This use of old
film is again another common
theme that runs with indie/
alternative /rock bands as similar
to the narrative could be
snapshots and portray
spontaneity within the band.
ICONOGRAPHY
In this picture there isn't much in the way of strong
iconography, there is however items that connote the
genre such as the dark tones in the picture and the use
of smoking and cigarettes. The cd it's just a picture of
cigarettes which continue with the monochrome
theme. Cigarettes have connotations of rock and roll
and see as a ‘bad’ habit that have always been linked
to big rock stars and the idea of smoking being ‘cool’.
So it fits well with the rock band and the image they
are trying to portray through the iconography of
cigarette's and smoking.
CHARACTERS
On the cover and insert there isn't any
characters, the only time we see some
models is on a leaflet in digipak itself,
and these characters are the members
of the band. I think that this was done
because most of the digipak is very
minimalistic as the front cover is very
bright and abstract so if there was to
be images of the charters it could be
too much. There is strong colour
scheme of earth tone and white in this
digipak and this is continued onto the
images of the characters. They are on a
white background all wearing greens
blues and browns, this keeping the
digipak very harmonious.
NARRATIVE
SETTING
TECHNICAL
The digipak itself very technical
as it has intricate folds as to
where the cd goes and where
and the inner things. This paired
with the simple colour scheme
and bold front cover again are
very effective as they are
interesting and match
complexity of the cover. The cd
itself follow on with the white
that runs throughout the digipak
and have the names of each song
printed around the edges of the
cd in a very light colour and
reflect the simplicity of the entire
digipak.
ICONOGRAOHY
The main setting we see is that
of where the pictures of the
band members is taken, and all
we can see from that is a white
brick wall with lots of what
appears to be natural lighting. it
could be said that they were
inside of a building. and what
can be inferred from this is that
it is modern and simplistic s
that this picture teamed with
the overall packaging, this
possibly being a reflection of the
type of music .In terms of what is happening the images not much
is happening, and not really that of an enigmatic
narrative. However visual ties can be between that
in which we see and that of which we can aspect to
listen to when we listen to the album. for example
the very clean simplistic look could suggest newer
music. modern and interesting. The liad back
clothing the band are wearing suggest something
less obvious like indie/folk/ or alternative and the
earth earth colour scheme linking to again
indie/folk. And this being the narrative being given
from this digipak
Because the digi pak is so simple
there isn't a lot of iconography that
could be described on. However
on the cover we see an edited
and manipulated image of what
appears to be an areal shot of
lakes and rivers, this image being
very reminiscent of veins. This
could link to natural iconography
and again having ties with the
genre of music and repenting the
band music.
CHARACTERS
Only one character is the artist
Rihanna. We see her in the cover and
the inside. On the cover it is a close
up of her face. There is a lot red and
blues on the cover, could possibly be
holding a juxtaposition of he blue
representing sadness and the red love
and passion. She has her eyes closed
for the front cover and with full red
lips red hair I could be suggested this
she looks sultry. Also in the middle
section she is in a large white wedding
like dress sleeping in a bed of roses. A
white dress and roses very symbolic
of love again.
NARRATIVE
I think there is quite a strong
narrative being portaged in this
Digipak. There is a definite portrayal
of love with the red colors, poses
and body language of character, use
of symbolic flowers such as roses
and this in all; I think, has a strong
linear narrative of love and
relationship. And this is very clear
through the se of iconography and
setting. It could be suggested that
that the album is going to be based
on love and the loss of love through
the narrative that is being displayed.
ICONOGRAPHY
On the disc and middle section we can see
red roses and white roses. Flowers usually
being used to connote love and specifically
roses. The two colors of roses could be said
to be showing two different sides of the
character. Red roses could have been used
to show love and passion, strong emotions
and deep rich roses also having links with
roses having thorns and there being more
than just passionate love. White roses could
have been used to create a contrast showing
purity, faith and innocence, the white roses
also coinciding with the white dress. This
contrasting showing two sides of the
character and also showing the two sides of
love she could be singing about, the
passionate love with bad endings and pain
and the purity and softer love.
SETTING
This shoot seems to have taken place
in what looks to be a rose garden. The
front cover image was most likely
taken in a studio as they seems to be
high key lighting used. The use of the
rose garden works well with the
character and the narrative of love. In
the image she appears to be lay in the
roses or maybe even sleeping in the
rose bush. She looks very innocent
and like peaceful with the white
dress.
TECHNICAL
In terms of technicalities it could be
suggested that lots of studio lighting would
have been used as on the front cover the
models face is very light with a strong
shadow below the chin. And again in the fold
out all of the image is very clear and her skin
is glowing with lots of light. Something that
stands out with this digipak is the colours.
There is the red roses and red hair and red
lips, red having lots of links with love hate
and passion, the white dress and contrasting
nicely with all of the white and then the blue
shadows. it could be suggested that curves
where used to change the hue of the
shadows to a blue tone to help break up the
red and contrast with the warmer colours,
and this works very well.
