This document analyzes and summarizes the design elements of digipaks for albums by Tinie Tempah, Lana Del Ray, and Ariana Grande. For Tinie Tempah's album, the purple theme represents spiritual protection and the font is consistent throughout. For Lana Del Ray's album, the simple front cover focuses on her beauty and vintage style, while the back has bold colors representing powerful emotions. Ariana Grande's album uses black and white to signify her pop and R&B genre and illustrate that her songs are timeless.

2. What is a Digipak?
• Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card outer
binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD
attached to the inside. Digipak-style cases grew in popularity among record
labels and recording artists in the early 2000s.
• Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of
CD albums.

3. Tinie Tempah
The purple theme on this Digipak is a galaxy purple, which could symbolise spiritual protection. The white glow around the artist symbolises his importance
and fits in nicely with the theme and the album name. The three colour rule isn’t really applied to this Digipak, however, they are consistent in terms of
colouring for the space theme, which are carried from the front to the back of the album. This allows the white text to stand out against the colo7urs and
frames the album much more than if the text was black for example.
Only one font is used through-out the album cover, including the artists name and song names featured on the back. This font is Tinie Tempahs signature font.
It instantly relates to the artist.
The font cover of the album is eye-catching, it is a mid-shot of the artist and he seems to have his arms wrapped around what seems to be a city, from my
background knowledge it would be appropriate for it to be London as this is where he grew up and also where his music career started to flourish. He tends to
mention the famous city in a variety of his songs. He is shown as serious and he is dressed all in black wearing a pair of sunglasses, along with an expensive
bracelet and watch emphasising the stereotypical rapper image (‘flashy’)
On the disk itself a dark purple colour is used with the same font as the rest of the album, the disk is simple however this doesn’t really matter. The colour
scheme and text fits in with the galaxy themed digipak, that I believe the artist is aiming for.
They have followed the traditional conventions by including production information and barcode on the album.

4. Lana Del Ray
• Lana Del Ray is an artist who focuses on indie pop. Her album ‘Born to Die’ was released in January 2012. Lana Del Ray appeals to an indie and vintage style group of
young adults.
• The front cover displays a simple medium close up it frames the audience to Lana’s beauty and voyeuristic features. There is a common feature seen within the indie
genre to allow record labels to create a representation of the artist. The simplicity of the design allows us as the audience to focus on Lana’s vintage style seen within her
outfit, hair and makeup. Lana’s wavy hair, nude lipstick and pout is a reoccurring feature seen with her albums, posters and adverts. It has allowed her to create a visual
style which has a high demand seen within the record label and allows the audience to recognise her easier due to the vintage image. Her target audience define her for
beauty and a simple, sophisticated look.
• Lana has been pictured outside which is actually a typical feature seen within the indie genre. It displays her as exploring the world and to encounter on adventures
which allows her to write songs much easier. A filter has been used to soften the image which mirrors the artist and her music. The colours display simplicity, freshness
and youthfulness. Which relates to her target audience.
• A simple style of font has been used to display the artists title. This style is commonly seen within Lana’s albums, and adverts which allows her to create a visual style
and allows the audience to identify the artist almost immediately. The simplicity relates back to her simplistic music.

5. • On the back of the digipak, it displays redundant elements such as track listing. The same simple style of font that has been used for the track listening which again
creates a visual style. Again, the simplicity of the styled text connotes the simplicity of the album. Redundant elements such as the barcode, copyright issues and record
label can be seen on the bottom of the album.
• An entropic feature seen within the back cover is the change of colour scheme. The front cover displays fresh, young colours. Whereas the back displays dominant and
bold colours. I feel that the red and white colour scheme promote the idea of powerful emotions in scripted within the lyrics of the songs.
• The simplicity of the design relates back to the design of the digipak. I feel that the reason behind simplicity allows the audience to focus on the track, and to discove
the meanings behind the names of the songs.
• The inside of the digipak consists of a same style image of the artist seen within the front cover and it successfully draws our attention to her body language. The close
up of Lana allows us as the audience to focus on her serious facial expression which would be defining how she takes her music seriously as an artist. The close up
displays a voyeuristic theory where the audience can have an insight to the artists life. The repetition of the same styled image is allowing Lana to create a visual style
which is important to her album. By applying the image to the two windows shows Lana’s importance as an artist and how she should be recognised for her image along
with her music.
• The colour scheme displays young and fresh colours which displays a natural and organic element. Where as the back cover of the digipak display dark and bold colours
suggesting emotional elements. I feel this could be suggesting as an artist Lana goes out exploring and when she does she discovers emotional elements which create
emotional and darkening songs. I feel by keeping her theme fresh and youthful, it targets a wider audience.
• The simplicity of the white mainly filing the CD makes the colour scheme tie together and the roses become more prominent from the background. It seems like an
important theme throughout the digipak. The use of the roses could be suggesting the idea of love which is a common subject within her songs. By placing roses on a
white background could also symbolise innocent love that the artist possibly encountered.
• The fact the artists name is not displayed on the CD could suggest she feels she is important enough for her audience to recognise the CD immediately.

6. Ariana Grande
• The two colours used are a combination of black and white. The two colours signify more of the genre of her music which is pop as well as contemporary RnB. Also
since the olden days, before there was any colour on television, the use of the two colours black and white may illustrate that Ariana’s songs are timeless. His songs
