Caleb Wilcox created a business card and promotional poster for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust over the course of a week. Each day he focused on different production elements: choosing a background color, refining the logo, adding scenic elements like hills and flowers, and incorporating text. Throughout the process, Caleb used tools in Photoshop like the bucket, eraser, pencil, and text tools to carefully add details that would appeal to audiences and support the client's goal of promoting wildlife spaces. By the end of the week, Caleb had pieced all the elements together into a cohesive design for both the business card and poster.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2. Day 1-Production
• Today has seen the first day of production for me on my
client brief, which meant to be creating the first stages of
my production for the business card and promotional
poster. I made the decision to start of with my business
card as I thought that it would be the quickest to make
first, so therefore I can leave the bigger ‘promotional
poster’ to last. The first stage of my production was more
based around chasing a color for the background of my
production which I took a small amount of time to chose as
I wanted it to be something that I would be happy with as
it seen to be something that I need to be happy with, as it
is my production work. Once I had got that sorted I moved
onto getting the logo for ‘YWT’ sorted and placed into a the
Photoshop document, there were a few areas that I had to
tidy up as when I placed the image into the document I
found that there was some white areas around the logo
and some small areas that I thought I needed to tidy up so
that the logo looked neat rather then out of place/messy,
this took quite a while to do but once I had got it done it
looked much better. From todays work In m production the
main tools of which I have used are the bucket tool to
create the color for my background, the next main tool of
which I used was more the idea of the/an eraser tool, I
made use of this to remove any excess areas of which I felt
weren’t necessary to have in my production, especially
when it came to still having white background parts from
the logo of which I have used. The next stage of my
production for me is to get on with adding features/text to
my business card and once that is done be moving onto my
promotional poster.
3. Day 2-Production
• Today I have carried on with my production work
for my business card for the ‘ Yorkshire wildlife
trust’, I feel that today on a whole I have made
some form of good progress with my production
having got on with new aspects of the visuals for
my production, these include the sky and bird
feature placed behind the ‘YWT’ logo along with
starting to work on the design for the hill/country
greenery scenery of which I have planned to place
in my production, especially more aimed at the
business card . I feel that the next stage for me is to
be getting on with the hill/grass scenery and be
working on adding in small but worthwhile details
to it so that it will appear more appealing towards
people, more importantly the viewer. The most
frequently used tool of which I have used today has
been the pencil tool to mark out outlines for the
grass/hill scenery, I decided to use this tool to do
this as I felt that it would be more precise and
accurate to use then the brush tool , if I used the
brush tool then I feel that the first outline I created
would have seen to be to messy looking and I
would of just had to re-create it again, hence me
chosing to use the pencil tool. Overall today I
believe that I have worked well with my production
and have managed to make some good progress
with my production
4. Day 3-Production
• Today I have focused on adding in the
small but important features to the
grass/hill scenery that is on my business
card, I feel that this was important to
include because it makes my work look
just that bit more detailed and also shows
that I have tried to go that extra mile to
reach out to my target audience, not only
this but I feel that it also helps to to aim
towards the brief from my client ‘more
wildlife space’, so seeing wildlife
space/scenery on the business card would
maybe make people see that they need to
help protest for more wildlife space. The
Main tool of which I have used for the
creation of this was then pencil tool so I
could get accurate sketches/drawings
rather than it looking messy/un-tidy. The
next stage of my production for me is to
carry on doing this until I find myself
happy that I have added enough detail
into it and making sure that it looks good.
Once I have finished this I will need to be
moving on with adding in the text areas to
my business card, inparticually the ones
that give contact information and the
message ‘we need more wildlife
space’/’help us get more wildlife space’.
This screen grab of my production so far clearly isn't
one where this stage of my production is complete as
you can see only a certain area of it has been
completed, much more detail is needed to be added
to it, which will be done on my next day of
production and will be able to seen in the next
development diary slide.
5. Day 4-Production
• Today I have been more focused with my work around
adding in small details/features to my production, these
include the idea of adding in darker shades of grass,
small flowers and finally making a start on adding in
roses to the background of the grass hill/scenery. The
first thing of which I did was work on adding in the
darker shades of grass into the hill to give the hill more
contrast/appeal to the hill which I thought would be
good as it might help to appeal to the audience more.
The main tool of which I used for this was the paint
tool, I found that this tool would be more effective to
use as I feel that you have a bit more freeway when
adding this area in so it looks like it blends in better
with the lighter color hills. When it came to adding in
the flowers and roses to the grass/hill scenery I made
the decision to use the pencil tool as I saw this tool to
be much more accurate as I was able to add them into
the areas of which I wanted to ad them in to, again I did
the same when it came to adding in the roses onto the
hill scenery. On a whole I believe that I am getting on
well with my production and I am happy with the
processes of which I have been getting on with and at
the end of this I hope that I will be happy with my
production and get it all finished on time.
6. Day 5
• Today I feel that I have got on much better with
my production work and have managed to work
more on piecing my work together into one
which I found to be an important stage in my
production, the main idea for this is to see how
my production looks with everything being
together(towards a final state). I also have
worked on adding in the text areas to my
production, which I personally think to be one of
the more important stages that needs to be
added to my production, especially with it being
a business card, these text parts were seen to be
more the text parts that make the
viewer/audience to be aware of what the product
is based around. The main tool of which I used to
create the text areas for my production was
simply the use of the text tool in my Photoshop
document, I also worked on adding in some
features to the text as I thought that it helped to
make the text stand out to the
background/surrounding area which I see to be a
good thing as it will help the audience to
understand what the product is about. For the
colour of the font I simply chose colors from the
colour chart/wheel on Photoshop.
