But new research makes the case that some of the worst decisions made by individuals and nations are too often motivated by honest, yet misplaced, emotions, and specifically empathy. Do we have too little empathy? Or too much?

Why is it we can put ourselves in the shoes of certain movie characters and suffer, celebrate, smile and even cry right along with them? How can we express the powerful sense of approval we feel when someone understands us without judging us? Why do discussions about politics quickly degenerate into vicious arguments? A 'mini-workshop' on insights from current developments and practice in enterprise-architecture (BCS-EA conference, London, October 2012)
The main part of the presentation is split into eight 'chunks', each tackling a single 'lesson-learnt' from trying to explain EA themes to others in real-world EA practice. Each 'chunk' is timed as around two minutes of background and overview (the bulk of the slides, between the respective 'Challenge' and 'Practice'), and then four minutes pair-discussion around the questions summarised on the respective 'Practice' slide. With two minutes at the start for overall lead-in, and ten minutes at the end for general discussion about what came up for participants during the Practice sections, this fits exactly into a one-hour time-slot.

Our industry is abuzz with talk about Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) and with good reason: they are a great way to improve the experiences our users have on our sites, especially when it comes to performance. Using Service Workers—a key component of PWAs—we can manage network requests and the cache to an incredibly granular degree. We can also totally abuse the privilege Service Workers grant us when it comes to writing files to disk.

As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
