2. What is dengue ?
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection
causing
• a severe flu-like illness,
• sometimes causing a potentially lethal
complication called severe dengue.

4. How to identify dengue
• Aedes aegypti is a small,
dark mosquito that can be
identified by the white bands
on its legs and a silver-white
pattern of scales on its body.
It is a small to medium sizes
mosquito, approximately 4mm
to 7mm.

5. Risk factors
Living or traveling in tropical areas. Being in
tropical and subtropical areas increases your risk
of exposure to the virus that causes dengue fever.
Especially high-risk areas are Southeast Asia, the
western Pacific islands, Latin America and the
Caribbean.
Prior infection with a dengue fever
virus. Previous infection with a dengue fever
virus increases your risk of having severe
symptoms if you're infected again.

8. The time when dengue is active
the mosquito is most active during daylight, for
approximately two hours after sunrise and several
hours before sunset. The mosquito rests indoors, in
closets and other dark places
It requires warm climate for living and is unable to
survive in cold winters. That is why dengue fever
spreads mostly during summer and rainy months
when the moisture content and temperature is
usually high.

12. Where to stop mosquito breeding
Mosquitoes breed in still water, fresh or salty, and often in
puddles and containers.
•Cover rainwater tanks, septic tank openings, wells or
other large water containers with mosquito- proof mesh.
•Maintain roof gutters and remove leaves and debris so
that pools of water do not form.
•Keep edges of dams clear of vegetation.
•Empty and refill bird baths, stock troughs and pets’
drinking water containers at least once a week.
•Maintain and disinfect swimming pools.
•Empty wading pools at the end of each day.
•Ornamental ponds, unused swimming pools or other
water bodies should be either emptied or stocked with
small Australian native fish to eat any mosquito larvae
('wrigglers').

of dengue fever
• high fever — 104 F degrees
• Headache
• Muscle, bone and joint pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Pain behind the eyes
• Swollen glands
• Rash

16. Signs and symptoms of severe
dengue fever
• Severe abdominal pain
• Persistent vomiting
• Bleeding from your gums or nose
• Blood in your urine, stools or vomit
• Bleeding under the skin, which might look like
bruising
• Difficult or rapid breathing
• Cold or clammy skin (shock)
• Fatigue
• Irritability or restlessness

18. Prevention
• Wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants.
• Treat clothes with repellents like
permethrin.
• Use EPA-registered mosquito repellent
like DEET.
• Consider using mosquito netting if you
will be in an areas with many
mosquitoes.
• Make sure windows and doors screens
are closed to avoid allowing mosquitoes
into inclosed spaces.
• Avoid areas with standing water.
Especially at times of high mosquito
activity like dawn and dusk.
