This document discusses a novel approach to improving turbine wheel quality using eddy current inspection. It involves developing a flexible eddy current probe to detect small casting defects less than 1mm. The probe was tested and shown to detect artificial and real defects on turbine wheel components as small as 0.1mm below the surface. Baseline inspection of 576 turbine blades found defects distributed across blades, with varying voltage and phase angle readings. Further work involves testing 9 options with suppliers to improve casting quality and manufacturing steps.
