This document discusses computational modeling of cyclones. It describes three turbulence models that can be used - the k-epsilon model, ASM model, and Reynolds Stress Model. It also outlines the key forces on particles in a cyclone - drag, centrifugal, and buoyant forces. The document shows the geometry and meshing of a cyclone in ANSYS and compares the results to a paper. The velocity and pressure profiles from ANSYS agree with the paper, but ANSYS could not capture the full volumetric results or negative pressure zone seen in the paper.

This work deals with the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for cyclone modeling on three-dimensional unstructured mesh using the Reynolds Stress turbulence model, a standard k-ε or a k-É model and Large Eddy simulation. Large-eddy simulations (LES) is performed on the gas flow in a cyclone at Re = 280,000. Numerical analysis of flow characteristics and separation efficiency in a high-efficiency cyclone is carried out. The model is only estimated the cyclone's performance under the limited environments; it is difficult to obtain a general model for all the types of cyclones. The purpose of this study is to find out the flow characteristics and separation efficiency numerically using ANSYS Fluent software. The Reynolds stress model (RSM), standard k-ε model and Large Eddy simulations are used in this work to know the flow separation characteristics. The models represent the 3-D, time-dependent flow analysis. CFD velocity profiles, and pressure drops for all the time-dependent flows are compared and discussed. Some details of the flow in the relatively small region in the vicinity of the inlet have strong influence on the separation process is checked with the simulations. The cyclone flow field pattern is simulated and analyzed with the aid of velocity components and static pressure contour plots.

The seventh lecture in the module Particle Technology, delivered to second year students who have already studied basic fluid mechanics.

The Cyclone Engine is built of three major components, the Steam Generator, Piston Block, and Condenser. The working fluid, deionized water, travels continuously through these three components. Beginning in the steam generator, moving into the pistons, then to the condenser, and finally pumped back into the steam generator.
Simulation of segregated flow over the 2 d cylinder using star ccm+Burak Turhan
In this thesis numerical simulation for classical case of flow over a cylinder is accomplished for 2D models using commercial CFD code Star CCM+ with k-ϵ model approach. The results are validated by comparing the Drag coefficients to the previously published data. The simulation is carried out to for Reynolds number 3900 to investigate the turbulence modeling on separation from curved surfaces of two different sizes of a circular cylinder, a cylinder with triangular cross section and a rectangular cross section. Investigation of different turbulence models and Mesh convergence is carried out.
The investigation of the turbulence model of the circular cylinder is carried out by the drag coefficient obtained by four different turbulence models such as K-Epsilon Turbulence, K-Omega Turbulence, Reynolds Stress Turbulence and Spalart-Allmaras Turbulence. Drag coefficient found out by different turbulence model is compared with the experimental value of a previously published data. The Mesh Convergence have been carried out by implementing different base mesh size in a decreasing order and the convergence is obtained when the drag coefficient becomes constant

axially symmetric, esp. in the

• The forced vortex does not
coincide with the geometrical
centre of the cylindrical body
of the cyclone.
• The diameter of the forced
vortex is a little larger than
that of the vortex finder.

is a twisted cylinder.
• Its axis does not coincide with
the geometrical axis of the
cyclone and is not a line but a
curve.

radial velocity is much larger
than that of the cylindrical

• 1] The geometry in Ansys is exactly similar to the one discussed in the paper.
• 2] CFX-mesh generated warnings and also the numbers of elements generated were very large.
• 3] Solver run almost took 2 hours to compile the results since the number of elements very large.
• 4] Boundary condition given at the inlet was Mass Flow Rate instead of the inlet velocity.
• 5] The results were obtained only on the surface and not over the entire volume.
• 6] Velocity results agree with the paper velocity results, i.e. Fluid are accelerated as it enters and the
velocity decreases as the fluid reaches toward the bottom of the cyclone.
• 7] Pressure results agree the paper pressure results, i.e. Pressure decreases radially from the wall toward
the centre however a negative pressure zone was not seen in the ANSYS results probably since the results
of the whole volume of the cyclone was not seen (or calculated by ANSYS)
• 8] But, Mass Flow Rate at the top surface was negative indicating that the velocity is in the opposite
direction demonstrating the formation of the forced
