Cycloalkanes are hydrocarbons that contain one or more carbon rings. The simplest cycloalkanes contain a single carbon ring and form a homologous series similar to alkanes. Ring strain is highest in small 3-4 membered rings due to bond angles being distorted from the ideal 109.5 degrees. Larger rings 5+ members have lower strain and more stable conformations like chair and boat forms. Different types of ring strain exist such as angle strain when bond angles deviate from ideal values.
