Impact Of Ecological Modernization On South Africa And The Uk
Introduction
Ecological modernisation has not only found application around the world in empirical studies and
theoretical debates but politicians also are using it to shape environmental reform programs in both
developed and developing countries (Mol et al., 2010). It is a green ideology that accounts for changes
in national and regional environmental policies and regulation. Therefore, this essay seeks to compare
changes in national environmental policies and regulation in South Africa and the UK following the
influence of ecological modernization. Focussing on how the ideas of economic growth environmental
protection coexistence and market based environmental policy instruments have found overwhelming
acceptance in the UK and South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According Mol and others (2010), since the beginning of contemporary environmentalism around the
1960 sand 1970s (and with the Report to the Club of Rome, the Blueprint for Survival and the
inception of several new environmental NGO), we can deduce three landmark events that have
catalysed innovation in and reform of environmental policies, practices and awareness. Attracting
global environmental attention, these three events are crucial to understanding the genesis and
development of the ideas of ecological modernization and how these ideas have influenced change in
environmental policies and regulation in both the global North and global south since the 1980s.
The first event is the publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987, which is commonly known as Our
Common Future. Through this Report, the World Commission on Environment and Development
(WCED) made a decisive statement in support of sustainable development (WCSD 1987). The
Brundtland Report is considered to be central to ecological modernization such that Mol and others
(2010) argue that ecological modernization theory can be understood as the social scientific
elaboration and formalisation of the undergirding philosophy pertaining to environmental reform
enunciated in Our Common Future. Among other things, the Brundtland Report aimed to overcome
the North South divide on questions

Patient Safety Is Vital For The Practice Of Medicine
Patient safety is vital in the practice of medicine. In medical laboratory science, we may not have a
direct contact with the patient, but every duty we perform can affect the outcome of the patient s
health. Patient safety involves being able to collect samples and follow the protocols for the test result.
Accuracy in medicine may be a very high standard, but it is worth it when it comes to a patient s life.
A medical practitioner should always have the expectation not to incur more harm on the patient. A
patient comes to the hospital for a solution to their problem and should not go back home with more
problems. Patient safety includes interpreting results accurately, doing the right test and following
protocols. The protocol for testing may be long to read, difficult to follow when you have a large
workload but vital in medicine. A medical laboratory scientist should always have the code of ethics at
heart to perform an error free lab test on a patient. Shortcuts may look easy, but the result poses
damage to the patient. The moment you made up your mind to be a laboratory practitioner was the
when you decided to take responsibility of caring and ensured error free for your patient.
A laboratory safe practice impacts the safety of a patient, his/her whole life, and the performance of
other practitioners in the treatment chain. A wrong interpretation of laboratory result by laboratory
scientist can affect a physician s diagnosis and prescription. The wrong diagnosis

East Of Eden Essay
When thinking about the gift offering in the biblical story of Cain and Abel and its impact, one can see
many similarities in East of Eden. Cain brought to God the fruit of the ground and Abel offered God
the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof (Gen 4 KJV). God preferred the gift of Abel to the gift
of Cain. In the first generation of the Trasks, Adam and Charles both give presents to their father
Cyrus for his birthday. Although it is clear that Cyrus is no God like figure, in this story he still has the
same role as God. He is the one, to whom the children offer their gifts and he shows preference of one
over the other. David McCright generalizes this in claiming that, God, though for Steinbeck only

It is then, when Caleb plans to give Adam 15,000 dollars that he made by investing in bean business.
Caleb hopes that this money will make up for a great loss of money that Adam suffered when a plan to
send lettuce to the east coast in refrigerated train cars failed. Adam rejects Caleb s money, following
the pattern of God rejecting or rather neglecting Cain s gift as Cyrus ignoring Charles knife. On the
other hand, it seems that Aron does not give their father any apparent gift, although many scholars, for
instance David McCright argues that Aron s gift is a subtle one. He simply returns home from college
for Thanksgiving and he is warmly received (McCright 24). This time, Steinbeck let the readers know
the most information about the gift that Caleb plans to give Adam. In the first offering, we only knew
about it thanks to Charles and his memories of it, but this is different, the readers can actually see how
much thought Caleb gave to it. He talks about making the money with Samuel s son, Will Hamilton,
who is also very clever and business oriented man. Will asks him why he wants to make that money
and give it to his father and he directly asks him if he wants to buy Adam s love, to which Caleb
replies that yes, he wants (East of Eden

Marijuana Legalization Case Study
In the current state of our society, there are many issues that have the ability to affect citizens on a
daily basis. Some of these issues spark debates all the way up to presidential candidates, while others
continue to hide in the shadows. A major issue in today s society is the use of marijuana and other
elicit drugs. Marijuana legalization has been a topic on many state house floors and senate meetings.
Many states have legalized medical marijuana or some form of the two active ingredients: THC
(tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (Cannabidiol). Few states have legalized recreational use, which
allows citizens over 21 to purchase marijuana for personal use. I want to propose a study on the effects

about the youth using marijuana, but little to no evidence existed on the matter. The tricky problem

kids reported that marijuana would be easy to find, whether they smoked or not. With that being said, I
believe that marijuana has become prevalent enough in this country as it is, whether states that allow
legalization or not, the youth will still be able to get their hands on marijuana. My hypothesis is that
legalization does not have an outstanding affect on the youth in

Hershey Case Study
Case 1: Hershey Christopher Dobbins MBA 710 July 24th, 2012 Dr. Moscato Introduction to Hershey
Hershey Foods Corporation is number one in the confectionary foods market. Although many people
associate Hershey with chocolate, the company started when founder Milton Hershey decided to

Competitors are also well positioned in international markets in order to diversify economic stresses
of their business environments. Potential Entry of New Competitors In order to enter into the
confectionary market and compete with Hershey is impossible. Not only because they are number one
of the largest in their industry but because they are well established. Hershey has been doing business
for over a century. There is no way for a new entrant to achieve that level of brand awareness and
customer brand loyalty. It would also be impossible for an entrant to compete as an economy of scale
because of the large amount of start up capital it would require to compete. There is also the issue of
technological Know How. As stated earlier Hershey has been doing this sort of business for over a
century and is very efficient at what they do. Potential Development of Substitute Products Hershey
faces many issues when it comes to substitute products. In the confectionary industry there is a large
number of substitute products. If any of Hershey s competitors are delivering more value to consumers
through price, quality, or quantity they will lose customers. The only thing that separates Hershey
from everyone else is their brand recognition. Maintaining their image, product quality, and
competitive pricing is key to avoid losing customers. Bargaining Power of Consumer Consumers have
extremely high bargaining power when it comes to Hershey products. As

Leadership-Evolving Challenges
Leadership Evolving Challenges and Demands
In many ways, leadership to me is an art form. There are very specific challenges and demands an
artist will faces when completing a single piece of work. Artists will use their skills, abilities, creative
processes, behaviors, and tools to meet their challenges and demands, drawing from past experiences,
learning and input from trusted sources, time tested and proven techniques, and quite possibly a little
innovation to overcome adversity and produce something which is amazing and often times can be
closely replicated but never repeated. In essence, the results are unique because the situation is unique.

The Pros And Cons Of The Industrial Revolution
A series of agricultural advancements were made throughout 18th century Britain that improved
cultivation methods and allowed for more efficient crop production that helped pay off much of the
country s debt and create a more stable and affordable diet for everyone. These improvements paved
the way for many other revolutions to occur such as the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial
Revolution made manual labor much easier through the use of machines. The high demand for the
products Britain was producing called for many workers and machines to meet the need. It created
many jobs and allowed anyone willing to work to make a sufficient living
During the Industrial Revolution many new technologies were made that helped to expedite the
production of goods in high demand. Since Britain was producing these goods at a faster rate they
were able to meet the needs and supply surrounding areas with the goods. Britain was able to make a
good profit off of these goods because of how high the demand was for them. Textiles were one of the
products most requested because the people wanted more clothing options. Textiles were previously
made from woolen cloth until they discovered cotton was more efficient. The more popular cotton was
becoming, the more workers needed, as a result landowners turned to slavery. Many new machines
were created which dwindled the responsibility on the slaves. One of these inventions is the pulley, it
lightened the weight when lifting heavy objects. The

the possibility that he mays till be a little rusty from the offseason and have decided to dwell deeper

Greg is a very talented player, and we know he values all competition as a challenge no matter the
skill level of the opposing team. He also possess a great work ethic that contributes to the positive
view of this theory. Looking at what the negatives are of this theory he might not be use to the coaches

Modern society has many ills plaguing it. Some of these ills include excess stress and unacceptable
behavior, both of which can be caused by the same thing: unhealthy placement of sports in modern
society. By sports being considered practically ideal in society, many child athletes suffer from
pressure to win and numerous people suffer from the poor behavior exhibited by certain adult athletes.
Most children s sports leagues begin with children around the age of 5 because that is the age where
most children are able to understand the concepts and rules of sports. This is also when children are

It s Time To Get A Grade In High School
I would like to start out with a little Bible verse from Proverbs 20:15, it goes like this There is gold
and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. This verse is saying
that people are surrounded daily by tons of things that we believe are precious and costly. Yet the
people with real understanding, knowledge, of value are the most precious and rare of all. But what is
real understanding of value? In today s society people are taught to believe that knowledge is getting a
diploma and going to a four year university. To get your diploma you must make good grades in
school. For college, high test scores and good high school grades are the things that dictate what
college you can get into. But why? Why should a grade in subjects most students don t even really

Count the Costs is a collaborative project between a range of organisations that, while representing a
diverse range of expertise and viewpoints, share a desire to reduce the unintended costs of the war on
drugs. The Count the Costs project aims to highlight the negative impacts of the war on drugs in seven
key policy areas: Development and Security; Public health; Human Rights; Stigma and

UN agencies to quantify the unintended negative consequences of the current approach to drugs, and

Outlining the Problem
In 2008, the Executive Director of UNODC, Antonio Maria Costa, affirmed there is indeed a spirit of
reform in the air, to make the conventions fit for purpose and adapt them to the reality on the ground
that is considerably different to the time they were drafted. With the multilateral machinery to adapt
the conventions already available, all we need is: first, a renewed commitment to the principles of
multilateralism and shared responsibility; second, a commitment to base our reform on empirical
evidence and not ideology; and thirdly, to put in place concrete actions that support the above, going
beyond mere rhetoric and pronouncement . (UNODC, 2008)

Stradbroke Island Case Study
Stradbroke Island s sandmining industry grew from modest beginnings where as early as 1948 hand
mining using shovels and trucks on the beach was established. Over numerous decades this soon
developed into present days use of large scale dredging. The establishment of aerial ropeways to
transport minerals for processing to Dunwich began in 1956 where the commencement of dredge
mining was initiated. Only a decade later, the concentrations of the rich black mineral being mined
were exhausted to the point that the miners moved their operations to the fore dunes. Whilst the
mining only caused minimal disruption to the environment, as the industry began to expand in the
1970s so did the impact on North Stradbroke s ecosystem. Sand mining company Consolidated Rutile
Limited (CRL) instigated dredge mining on Stradbroke s high dunes in 1979, this radically altered the

Domestic Violence Affects Children s Development
Introduction
Thesis: Domestic violence can negatively affect children s development. (make more persuasive)
Children all around the world witness domestic violence. Whether it s between parents, partners or
even the elder. Does the parents, partners, or elder realize the affects that happen to their children?
Witnessing domestic violence, children become fearful and anxious. They become this way because
they never know when the next event may happen, fearing for themselves, mom or dad, and siblings.
Also becoming worthless and powerless, feeling the need to keep their family a secret and/or not
being able to talk to their own family about the abuse. Sometimes they feel like they are the reason
why there is domestic violence in their home. If they look fine to you or others in the world that don t
know about their family, they truly may not be fine at all inside. As reading it doesn t seem that the
children are being hit in any of the domestic violence, but the parent that is being hit from their partner
fear for the child/children. Domestic violence, can negatively affect children s development. (try to

General information about domestic violence

The Epic Of Gilgamesh Essay
Tonisia Tutt Professor Andre World Literature 1 October 11, 2015 The Epic of Gilgamesh does not
quite have a happy end. Truthfully, Gilgamesh is not successful in his mission. It is shortsighted and
deceived to expect that Gilgamesh, the saint, must be effective in his journey to hold the
characteristics of courage. An unsuccessful journey not harsh any more than a courageous ending is
essentially joyful. For recognitions of this, we need to look no more distant than the plenty of
thoughtful legends of great writing the stories of Homer, Virgil s Aeneid, and even Beowulf of the
Anglo Saxon abstract convention. The Illiad end with the slaughter of Troy and the passing of
Achilles. The Odyssey, in spite of the fact that it sees the saint restored home, in any case includes an
entirely tough cost. The Aeneid, in like manner, shows in disaster. Like Achilles, Odysseus, Aeneas,
and various other exemplary legends, Gilgamesh too shows those qualities vital to an ordinary
scholarly saint, none of which needs to do, truth be told, with the unique idea of pleasure. In spite of
the fact that achievement is quite unimportant to the bravery of a specific journey, maybe the first
indicate considered in Gilgamesh is that the legend might really make progress. His level of progress
depends to a limited extent on what he needs to accomplish and what he accomplish. Given the
included creative component of the epic that they are developments of one or more creators the

The Long Historical Journey Of Lebanon s Shia Community
Dr. Haytham Mouzahem a Middle Eastern writer describes the long historical journey of Lebanon s
Shia community. The Lebanese Shia s attained global identity in the 1980s, 5 years after Hezbollah
was founded in 1975, with military operations carried out opposing the Israeli occupation in Lebanon,
and the beginning of Hezbollah s relationship with Syria and the Islamic republic of Iran ever since.
According to some historians and Shia scholars in Lebanon and the west, the actual occultation of Shi
ism in Lebanon was incorporated by Abu Dhar Al Ghaffari , a companion of Prophet Muhammad and
also the fifth person to accept the religion of Islam. Abu Dhar moved to Jabal Amel in the south of
Lebanon where he began spreading the religion of Shia Islam where he later died in 652 AD; and that
is why the greater Shia population resides in the southern region of the country .
Additionally, other historians state that the Shia tribe from Hamadan migrating into Syria and Lebanon
increased the Shia population in the country during the time of the Umayyads reign, again creating
Southern Lebanon a important region for the Shia s, later spreading into the North. During the time of
the Crusades 85% of Lebanon consisted of Shia Muslims until Ibn Taymiyyah, a powerful extremist
clergy issued a fatwa to kill the Shia s, after which many died, fled the cities, converted to the religion
of Sunni Islam or Christianity and adopted Taqiyyah , a practice that meant hiding the

provide service, directly to patients in need of urological and surgical care. The IVU members
accomplish this by teaching doctors and nurses in resource poor areas of the world the skills they
need. In return the people in these communities will have greater access to services. The international
volunteer in urology has worked with many countries throughout the world. They ve worked with

the common myths that people have about world. He starts off the video by talking about
preconceived notions that his students had about the statistics of Child Mortality. He gave the students

Hans Rosling also talked about myths that were common in third world countries. Myths such as the

Most countries have moved towards a trend of smaller families and increasing life expectancy.
Countries in Africa were one area lagging in life expectancy, due to a HIV epidemic in the 90s.

Social Issues In Northanger Abbey, By Jane Austen
Northanger Abbey is a classic written by Jane Austen. The novel is celebrated as a literary masterpiece
that deals with the English social class system, along with the social rules and it shows the results of
choices made by the characters. The story follows Catherine Morland, a girl who is heavily influenced
by books, but is also very naïve to the outside world. Catherine lives in the modest town of Fullerton,
and her life there has been mostly very protected and sheltered from lifestyles and habits of people
outside of Fullerton. The Morlands are friends with another family named the Allen s. They are
wealthy members of society, and they extend an invitation to take Catherine with them to Bath, which
is a wealthy area for families that meet that clientele. Because her life in Fullerton has been so
sheltered and moderate, her experience in Bath is a whole new world and it excites and scares her
alike. While in Bath, Catherine is introduced to a young man by the name of Henry Tilney, a ... Show

The varying hierarchies between Catherine and Isabella and between Catherine and Henry are
interesting for one to read through. The effects the social classes had on Isabella were arguably greater
than any other major character in the story. She was attracted to the drama, gossip, and vigor of that
lifestyle. Isabella thrived on knowing the important information about people in the society, and she
was well learned on other people s personal lives. The idea of having a rich and popular and important
husband caught her attention more than marrying for love did. She was engaged to James for love, but
once a better offer came along in the form of Captain Frederick Tilney, she had a change of heart.
Suddenly, she was content with leaving behind her fiancé of humble beginnings and earning for

Why Are Historically Black Colleges Wrong
It is getting old hearing about what historically black colleges do wrong. Continuously hearing about
what historically black colleges cannot do and what predominantly white institutions can. Hearing the
phrase HBCU only to be followed by a negative comment. Mainly black colleges are needed for
African Americans who were unaccepted for their race or undereducated about their history, but with
such an adverse light on historically black colleges, it makes you think. Why are HBCU s so necessary
to save for survival and for the future?
African men and women deserve to get an education just as much as anybody and if a student wants to

The Importance Of Games In Soccer
El Salvador fans then had the home field advantage and returned the favor by harassing the Honduran
players and fans. Salvadoran fans caused noise in the streets to keep the Honduran players awake just
like the Hondurans did to them. This included the screaming crowd of fans breaking all the windows
in the hotel and throwing rotten eggs, dead rats and stinking rags inside (Carter, 2011). Come game
time there were riots in the stadium with violence between the two sets of fans. El Salvador even
decided to raise a tampered rag instead of the Honduras flag that cause uproar among Honduran fans.

Only a few days later El Salvador, who had had enough of Honduran violence, committed an act of
war against Honduras officially beginning the war. Rouquié and Vale (1973) recount the war in the
International Journal of Politics. Following the breaking off of all ties between the two countries,
numerous other Central American countries pushed for mediation. This did not help and on June 26,
1969, El Salvador enacted a surprise air raid attack followed by a ground attack on July 14th. The goal
of this surprise attack was to attempt to gain as much land and major cities as fast as possible. For a
geographically small country such as El Salvador, it was important to push Honduras back quickly.
Additionally El Salvador hoped to at least control the land that many Salvadoran immigrants owned
within the Honduras boarder. Following the bombings, El Salvador used their far more powerful army
to invade on the ground, quickly claiming about sixty kilometers of land. Despite lacking in military
strength, the geography of Honduras and the support from civilians helped in slowing down the
Salvadoran army. The following day the Organization of American States (OAS) held an emergency
meeting in which they requested El Salvador to discontinue their attack on Honduras. The
Organization of American States was a coalition of Latin American countries and the

`` For The Love Of Culture `` By Lawrence Lessig
Copyright Laws Need an Update Since the beginning, copyrights have existed to protect people from
theft of content, thus inspiring more creativity from the public. The interpretation of these laws has
been twisted by large corporations to serve as a legal means to restrict content for public use and to
gain from profitable licensing. It is essential that copyrighted materials are available to everyone for
our culture to grow. With the copyright laws so perplexing and different depending on the context,
individuals may not understand they are committing a crime by using information and be subjected to
lawsuits, despite good intentions. Lawrence Lessig s three proposals for copyright changes are key
concepts facing issues like this. It is crucial we pay attention because our cultural future is in jeopardy.
In Lawrence Lessig s article For the Love of Culture , he explains his concern that our copyright laws
are hampering our opportunity to learn about our past. Lessig gives us a good example in the
beginning about a daughter of a late great American documentary. She felt it was important to re
master her father s collections and make them available on DVD. Lessig describes the challenges she
faced clearing permissions because of the copyright laws. He also explains how copyright laws are
different when trying to access documentary films versus books. Lessig continues, explaining that
Google scanned eighteen million books to have them accessible to the public.

Analysis Of `` House Of Sand And Fog `` By Andre Dubus IIi
Alienation Throughout the novel House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III, the recurring theme of
alienation takes its toll on the lives of the two main characters: Kathy and Behrani. We see how the
isolation of both characters not only has an effect on them, but also on the lives of others who matter
most to them. Alienation is the act of being withdrawn or isolated from a life in which one is
accustomed or should be accustomed to. The incidents of alienation demonstrated in the novel
include, the relationship between each character and their families, Behrani and his family being
forced out of their home country and living in America, and Kathy getting evicted from her family
house. As we see these events occur throughout the book, we also learn that both characters will do
whatever it takes to claim ownership of what they both call home. This drawn out battle over a piece
of property ends up putting Kathy along with Lester behind bars, and with Behrani losing his son in
the process. Dubus illustrates many scenes where both Kathy and Behrani isolate themselves from
their families. For example, when Kathy is at the motel reminiscing of her phone calls with her
mother, we see how Kathy alienates herself from her family when she notes how after Nick left, she
would start lying about how well he was doing at his new job and how this used to be true (44). By not
telling her mother that Nick had left her, this demonstrates a clear example of her seclusion from her

Summary Of Minorities In The Rise Of The Rocket Girls
To be treated as lesser or unworthy is a terrible thing. What happened to all men are created equal ? I
guess that only applies if you are a straight, white man. A minority is a part of a population differing
from others in some characteristics and are often subjected to different treatment. That said, minorities
were mistreated and shoved to the back of history. In Aria by Richard Rodriguez the Rodriguez family
feel what it means to be a minority in their everyday life. They re held at arm s length by the people
around them, and struggle to assimilate. In Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt it s not race that
sets these women behind. It is simply the fact that they are women. In both novels society is
presenting more challenges to a certain group, but that does not stop them. Even today minorities are
still at a disadvantage. That does not stop people from pursuing their goals and dreams. As a student
perseverance is needed because you cannot give up easily or you just will not make it. Aria has many
counter arguments and debates revolving around assimilation. To better visualize the meaning of
assimilation imagine having a group of blue blocks all exactly the same. You bring in a few different
colored blocks red, yellow, green ones. In order for them to fit in you paint them all blue. Isn t that

By the turn of the twentieth century, the once powerful Ottoman Islamic Middle Eastern order was
rendered unstable by conflicts emanating from its core components to the challenge of European
dominance. Its economic order was restructured into different parts of the region. The Capitulations,
were transformed into tools of European economic and political control. In an effort to recover Middle
Eastern military strength and prevent rebellion and European imperialism, the rulers of Egypt and the

But by 1920, neither that state nor its Islamic institutions held prominence in the Middle East, and its
former Arab and Turkish subjects faded into obscurity. In its final century the Ottoman system
underwent considerable transformation. The reform movement strengthened the administrative
efficiency and the military capability of the empire, but at the same time the reforms were bound to
undermine the foundations on which the Ottoman order rested. Despite the administrative changes and
the spread of nationalist revolts in the Balkans, the Arab subjects of the empire neither wanted, nor
anticipated, its collapse and replacement by a regional Arab state system. The doctrine of Arabism
surfaced before the war, but it was not so much a program for political independence so much as a
demand for Arab autonomy within an Ottoman framework. Thus, at the outbreak of the war,
Ottomanism remained the dominant ideology in the Arabic speaking provinces. And despite all the
attention that Sharif Husayn s revolt later received, they did not detach the majority of Arabs from
their Ottoman loyalties during the war years. But by the end of the war in 1918, Ottomanism was
irrelevant. The French occupation of Damascus and the creation of regional states, compelled the Arab
elites to focus their attention on developments in their own new states. Arabs that had been formerly
occupants of Ottoman provinces, now had to create new identities as Iraqis, Syrians, Palestinians, etc.
One element in the post Ottoman Middle East did remain constant, the individuals who rose to
political prominence in the new states were mainly those who had held positions of power and or
influence within the Ottoman system, whether they were local notables or prior Ottoman civil servants

Adonia Research Papers
Miami was hot. It was an early Sunday morning in June when I found myself in Florida, driving to the
port of Miami. Still tired from the red eye flight the day before, my excitement pushed away the
grogginess that had enveloped me since touching down. The Adonia came into view, Carnival s new
cruise ship, offering travellers the opportunity to help local communities on existing projects while on
holiday. The ship sails from Miami to the Dominican Republic where we would be joining community
projects for 3 days, before sailing back.
When I first heard of Fathom and its volunteering cruise, I was intrigued. The last few years,
volunteerism has been on the rise. Travellers want to contribute to local communities and give back to
the environment on their days off. However, not everyone is able to spend months away from home to
volunteer abroad. Fathom seemed to offer this niche group a solution: providing travellers the

Pros And Cons Of Tattoos
Today, older generations view tattoos as trashy, unclassy, and unprofessional; while younger
generations think they are more acceptable, art like, and a way to further express yourself. Tattoos
today are becoming more accepted by the younger generations. As a result of this it is now much

The Tell Tale Heart Mood
This poem is about the murder of an old man. In The Tell Tale Heart, Edgar Allen Poe uses dark
details, diction, and imagery to convey a haunting mood. The murderer expresses how he killed the

haunted by the murderer stalking him. In the Tell Tale Heart the author uses dark details to show a
scary and spooky mood. The disease had sharpened my senses not destroyed not dulled them . This
illustrates that he is using negative and dark scary words to show spooky details about the old mans
disease. When I had made an end of these labors, it was four o clock still dark as midnight . This

  • 2. Impact Of Ecological Modernization On South Africa And The Uk Introduction Ecological modernisation has not only found application around the world in empirical studies and theoretical debates but politicians also are using it to shape environmental reform programs in both developed and developing countries (Mol et al., 2010). It is a green ideology that accounts for changes in national and regional environmental policies and regulation. Therefore, this essay seeks to compare changes in national environmental policies and regulation in South Africa and the UK following the influence of ecological modernization. Focussing on how the ideas of economic growth environmental protection coexistence and market based environmental policy instruments have found overwhelming acceptance in the UK and South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According Mol and others (2010), since the beginning of contemporary environmentalism around the 1960 sand 1970s (and with the Report to the Club of Rome, the Blueprint for Survival and the inception of several new environmental NGO), we can deduce three landmark events that have catalysed innovation in and reform of environmental policies, practices and awareness. Attracting global environmental attention, these three events are crucial to understanding the genesis and development of the ideas of ecological modernization and how these ideas have influenced change in environmental policies and regulation in both the global North and global south since the 1980s. The first event is the publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987, which is commonly known as Our Common Future. Through this Report, the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) made a decisive statement in support of sustainable development (WCSD 1987). The Brundtland Report is considered to be central to ecological modernization such that Mol and others (2010) argue that ecological modernization theory can be understood as the social scientific elaboration and formalisation of the undergirding philosophy pertaining to environmental reform enunciated in Our Common Future. Among other things, the Brundtland Report aimed to overcome the North South divide on questions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Patient Safety Is Vital For The Practice Of Medicine Patient safety is vital in the practice of medicine. In medical laboratory science, we may not have a direct contact with the patient, but every duty we perform can affect the outcome of the patient s health. Patient safety involves being able to collect samples and follow the protocols for the test result. Accuracy in medicine may be a very high standard, but it is worth it when it comes to a patient s life. A medical practitioner should always have the expectation not to incur more harm on the patient. A patient comes to the hospital for a solution to their problem and should not go back home with more problems. Patient safety includes interpreting results accurately, doing the right test and following protocols. The protocol for testing may be long to read, difficult to follow when you have a large workload but vital in medicine. A medical laboratory scientist should always have the code of ethics at heart to perform an error free lab test on a patient. Shortcuts may look easy, but the result poses damage to the patient. The moment you made up your mind to be a laboratory practitioner was the when you decided to take responsibility of caring and ensured error free for your patient. A laboratory safe practice impacts the safety of a patient, his/her whole life, and the performance of other practitioners in the treatment chain. A wrong interpretation of laboratory result by laboratory scientist can affect a physician s diagnosis and prescription. The wrong diagnosis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. East Of Eden Essay When thinking about the gift offering in the biblical story of Cain and Abel and its impact, one can see many similarities in East of Eden. Cain brought to God the fruit of the ground and Abel offered God the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof (Gen 4 KJV). God preferred the gift of Abel to the gift of Cain. In the first generation of the Trasks, Adam and Charles both give presents to their father Cyrus for his birthday. Although it is clear that Cyrus is no God like figure, in this story he still has the same role as God. He is the one, to whom the children offer their gifts and he shows preference of one over the other. David McCright generalizes this in claiming that, God, though for Steinbeck only psychologically speaking, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is then, when Caleb plans to give Adam 15,000 dollars that he made by investing in bean business. Caleb hopes that this money will make up for a great loss of money that Adam suffered when a plan to send lettuce to the east coast in refrigerated train cars failed. Adam rejects Caleb s money, following the pattern of God rejecting or rather neglecting Cain s gift as Cyrus ignoring Charles knife. On the other hand, it seems that Aron does not give their father any apparent gift, although many scholars, for instance David McCright argues that Aron s gift is a subtle one. He simply returns home from college for Thanksgiving and he is warmly received (McCright 24). This time, Steinbeck let the readers know the most information about the gift that Caleb plans to give Adam. In the first offering, we only knew about it thanks to Charles and his memories of it, but this is different, the readers can actually see how much thought Caleb gave to it. He talks about making the money with Samuel s son, Will Hamilton, who is also very clever and business oriented man. Will asks him why he wants to make that money and give it to his father and he directly asks him if he wants to buy Adam s love, to which Caleb replies that yes, he wants (East of Eden ... • 7. Marijuana Legalization Case Study In the current state of our society, there are many issues that have the ability to affect citizens on a daily basis. Some of these issues spark debates all the way up to presidential candidates, while others continue to hide in the shadows. A major issue in today s society is the use of marijuana and other elicit drugs. Marijuana legalization has been a topic on many state house floors and senate meetings. Many states have legalized medical marijuana or some form of the two active ingredients: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (Cannabidiol). Few states have legalized recreational use, which allows citizens over 21 to purchase marijuana for personal use. The reason the Carter administration s decriminalization plan failed was because parents were worried about the youth using marijuana, but little to no evidence existed on the matter. The tricky problem with this research question, is there are already findings, even in non legal states of high school aged kids reported that marijuana would be easy to find, whether they smoked or not. With that being said, I believe that marijuana has become prevalent enough in this country as it is, whether states that allow legalization or not, the youth will still be able to get their hands on marijuana. Competitors are also well positioned in international markets in order to diversify economic stresses of their business environments. Potential Entry of New Competitors In order to enter into the confectionary market and compete with Hershey is impossible. Not only because they are number one of the largest in their industry but because they are well established. Hershey has been doing business for over a century. There is no way for a new entrant to achieve that level of brand awareness and customer brand loyalty. It would also be impossible for an entrant to compete as an economy of scale because of the large amount of start up capital it would require to compete. There is also the issue of technological Know How. As stated earlier Hershey has been doing this sort of business for over a century and is very efficient at what they do. Potential Development of Substitute Products Hershey faces many issues when it comes to substitute products. In the confectionary industry there is a large number of substitute products. If any of Hershey s competitors are delivering more value to consumers through price, quality, or quantity they will lose customers. The only thing that separates Hershey from everyone else is their brand recognition. Maintaining their image, product quality, and competitive pricing is key to avoid losing customers. There are very specific challenges and demands an artist will faces when completing a single piece of work. Artists will use their skills, abilities, creative processes, behaviors, and tools to meet their challenges and demands, drawing from past experiences, learning and input from trusted sources, time tested and proven techniques, and quite possibly a little innovation to overcome adversity and produce something which is amazing and often times can be closely replicated but never repeated. • 10. The Pros And Cons Of The Industrial Revolution A series of agricultural advancements were made throughout 18th century Britain that improved cultivation methods and allowed for more efficient crop production that helped pay off much of the country s debt and create a more stable and affordable diet for everyone. These improvements paved the way for many other revolutions to occur such as the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution made manual labor much easier through the use of machines. The high demand for the products Britain was producing called for many workers and machines to meet the need. It created many jobs and allowed anyone willing to work to make a sufficient living During the Industrial Revolution many new technologies were made that helped to expedite the production of goods in high demand. Since Britain was producing these goods at a faster rate they were able to meet the needs and supply surrounding areas with the goods. Britain was able to make a good profit off of these goods because of how high the demand was for them. Textiles were one of the products most requested because the people wanted more clothing options. Textiles were previously made from woolen cloth until they discovered cotton was more efficient. The more popular cotton was becoming, the more workers needed, as a result landowners turned to slavery. Many new machines were created which dwindled the responsibility on the slaves. We are currently still in the middle of the season and I have ruled out the possibility that he mays till be a little rusty from the offseason and have decided to dwell deeper into Greg s situation. I plan on as the coach focusing on his traits and states that might cause our starting third basement to not show his full skill level during game day. We know from practice that Greg is a very talented player, and we know he values all competition as a challenge no matter the skill level of the opposing team. He also possess a great work ethic that contributes to the positive view of this theory. Some of these ills include excess stress and unacceptable behavior, both of which can be caused by the same thing: unhealthy placement of sports in modern society. By sports being considered practically ideal in society, many child athletes suffer from pressure to win and numerous people suffer from the poor behavior exhibited by certain adult athletes. Most children s sports leagues begin with children around the age of 5 because that is the age where most children are able to understand the concepts and rules of sports. It s Time To Get A Grade In High School I would like to start out with a little Bible verse from Proverbs 20:15, it goes like this There is gold and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. This verse is saying that people are surrounded daily by tons of things that we believe are precious and costly. Yet the people with real understanding, knowledge, of value are the most precious and rare of all. But what is real understanding of value? In today s society people are taught to believe that knowledge is getting a diploma and going to a four year university. To get your diploma you must make good grades in school. The project calls upon world leaders and UN agencies to quantify the unintended negative consequences of the current approach to drugs, and assess the potential costs and benefits of alternative approaches. (Count the Costs, 2012) Outlining the Problem In 2008, the Executive Director of UNODC, Antonio Maria Costa, affirmed there is indeed a spirit of reform in the air, to make the conventions fit for purpose and adapt them to the reality on the ground that is considerably different to the time they were drafted. With the multilateral machinery to adapt the conventions already available, all we need is: first, a renewed commitment to the principles of multilateralism and shared responsibility; second, a commitment to base our reform on empirical evidence and not ideology; and thirdly, to put in place concrete actions that support the above, going beyond mere rhetoric and pronouncement . (UNODC, 2008) There has been an increasing sentiment of discontent within the international community about the ineffectiveness of global drug ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Stradbroke Island Case Study Stradbroke Island s sandmining industry grew from modest beginnings where as early as 1948 hand mining using shovels and trucks on the beach was established. Over numerous decades this soon developed into present days use of large scale dredging. The establishment of aerial ropeways to transport minerals for processing to Dunwich began in 1956 where the commencement of dredge mining was initiated. Only a decade later, the concentrations of the rich black mineral being mined were exhausted to the point that the miners moved their operations to the fore dunes. Whilst the mining only caused minimal disruption to the environment, as the industry began to expand in the 1970s so did the impact on North Stradbroke s ecosystem. Sand mining company Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) instigated dredge mining on Stradbroke s high dunes in 1979, this radically altered the landscape of North Stradbroke Island (Sweet, C 2010). (make more persuasive) Children all around the world witness domestic violence. Whether it s between parents, partners or even the elder. Does the parents, partners, or elder realize the affects that happen to their children? Witnessing domestic violence, children become fearful and anxious. They become this way because they never know when the next event may happen, fearing for themselves, mom or dad, and siblings. Also becoming worthless and powerless, feeling the need to keep their family a secret and/or not being able to talk to their own family about the abuse. Sometimes they feel like they are the reason why there is domestic violence in their home. If they look fine to you or others in the world that don t know about their family, they truly may not be fine at all inside. As reading it doesn t seem that the children are being hit in any of the domestic violence, but the parent that is being hit from their partner fear for the child/children. • 18. The Epic Of Gilgamesh Essay Tonisia Tutt Professor Andre World Literature 1 October 11, 2015 The Epic of Gilgamesh does not quite have a happy end. Truthfully, Gilgamesh is not successful in his mission. It is shortsighted and deceived to expect that Gilgamesh, the saint, must be effective in his journey to hold the characteristics of courage. An unsuccessful journey not harsh any more than a courageous ending is essentially joyful. For recognitions of this, we need to look no more distant than the plenty of thoughtful legends of great writing the stories of Homer, Virgil s Aeneid, and even Beowulf of the Anglo Saxon abstract convention. The Illiad end with the slaughter of Troy and the passing of Achilles. The Odyssey, in spite of the fact that it sees the saint restored home, in any case includes an entirely tough cost. The Aeneid, in like manner, shows in disaster. Like Achilles, Odysseus, Aeneas, and various other exemplary legends, Gilgamesh too shows those qualities vital to an ordinary scholarly saint, none of which needs to do, truth be told, with the unique idea of pleasure. In spite of the fact that achievement is quite unimportant to the bravery of a specific journey, maybe the first indicate considered in Gilgamesh is that the legend might really make progress. His level of progress depends to a limited extent on what he needs to accomplish and what he accomplish. Given the included creative component of the epic that they are developments of one or more creators the accomplishment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Lebanese Shia s attained global identity in the 1980s, 5 years after Hezbollah was founded in 1975, with military operations carried out opposing the Israeli occupation in Lebanon, and the beginning of Hezbollah s relationship with Syria and the Islamic republic of Iran ever since. According to some historians and Shia scholars in Lebanon and the west, the actual occultation of Shi ism in Lebanon was incorporated by Abu Dhar Al Ghaffari , a companion of Prophet Muhammad and also the fifth person to accept the religion of Islam. Abu Dhar moved to Jabal Amel in the south of Lebanon where he began spreading the religion of Shia Islam where he later died in 652 AD; and that is why the greater Shia population resides in the southern region of the country . Additionally, other historians state that the Shia tribe from Hamadan migrating into Syria and Lebanon increased the Shia population in the country during the time of the Umayyads reign, again creating Southern Lebanon a important region for the Shia s, later spreading into the North. During the time of the Crusades 85% of Lebanon consisted of Shia Muslims until Ibn Taymiyyah, a powerful extremist clergy issued a fatwa to kill the Shia s, after which many died, fled the cities, converted to the religion of Sunni Islam or Christianity and adopted Taqiyyah , a practice that meant hiding the ... The interpretation of these laws has been twisted by large corporations to serve as a legal means to restrict content for public use and to gain from profitable licensing. It is essential that copyrighted materials are available to everyone for our culture to grow. With the copyright laws so perplexing and different depending on the context, individuals may not understand they are committing a crime by using information and be subjected to lawsuits, despite good intentions. Lawrence Lessig s three proposals for copyright changes are key concepts facing issues like this. It is crucial we pay attention because our cultural future is in jeopardy. • 31. Analysis Of `` House Of Sand And Fog `` By Andre Dubus IIi Alienation Throughout the novel House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III, the recurring theme of alienation takes its toll on the lives of the two main characters: Kathy and Behrani. We see how the isolation of both characters not only has an effect on them, but also on the lives of others who matter most to them. Alienation is the act of being withdrawn or isolated from a life in which one is accustomed or should be accustomed to. The incidents of alienation demonstrated in the novel include, the relationship between each character and their families, Behrani and his family being forced out of their home country and living in America, and Kathy getting evicted from her family house. As we see these events occur throughout the book, we also learn that both characters will do whatever it takes to claim ownership of what they both call home. This drawn out battle over a piece of property ends up putting Kathy along with Lester behind bars, and with Behrani losing his son in the process. Dubus illustrates many scenes where both Kathy and Behrani isolate themselves from their families. For example, when Kathy is at the motel reminiscing of her phone calls with her mother, we see how Kathy alienates herself from her family when she notes how after Nick left, she would start lying about how well he was doing at his new job and how this used to be true (44). I guess that only applies if you are a straight, white man. A minority is a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics and are often subjected to different treatment. That said, minorities were mistreated and shoved to the back of history. In Aria by Richard Rodriguez the Rodriguez family feel what it means to be a minority in their everyday life. They re held at arm s length by the people around them, and struggle to assimilate. In Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt it s not race that sets these women behind. It is simply the fact that they are women. In both novels society is presenting more challenges to a certain group, but that does not stop them. Even today minorities are still at a disadvantage. That does not stop people from pursuing their goals and dreams. As a student perseverance is needed because you cannot give up easily or you just will not make it. But by 1920, neither that state nor its Islamic institutions held prominence in the Middle East, and its former Arab and Turkish subjects faded into obscurity. In its final century the Ottoman system underwent considerable transformation. The reform movement strengthened the administrative efficiency and the military capability of the empire, but at the same time the reforms were bound to undermine the foundations on which the Ottoman order rested. Despite the administrative changes and the spread of nationalist revolts in the Balkans, the Arab subjects of the empire neither wanted, nor anticipated, its collapse and replacement by a regional Arab state system. The doctrine of Arabism surfaced before the war, but it was not so much a program for political independence so much as a demand for Arab autonomy within an Ottoman framework. Thus, at the outbreak of the war, Ottomanism remained the dominant ideology in the Arabic speaking provinces. And despite all the attention that Sharif Husayn s revolt later received, they did not detach the majority of Arabs from their Ottoman loyalties during the war years. But by the end of the war in 1918, Ottomanism was irrelevant. The French occupation of Damascus and the creation of regional states, compelled the Arab elites to focus their attention on developments in their own new states. Arabs that had been formerly occupants of Ottoman provinces, now had to create new identities as Iraqis, Syrians, Palestinians, etc. One element in the post Ottoman Middle East did remain constant, the individuals who rose to political prominence in the new states were mainly those who had held positions of power and or influence within the Ottoman system, whether they were local notables or prior Ottoman civil servants and ... • 36. Adonia Research Papers Miami was hot. It was an early Sunday morning in June when I found myself in Florida, driving to the port of Miami. Still tired from the red eye flight the day before, my excitement pushed away the grogginess that had enveloped me since touching down. The Adonia came into view, Carnival s new cruise ship, offering travellers the opportunity to help local communities on existing projects while on holiday. The ship sails from Miami to the Dominican Republic where we would be joining community projects for 3 days, before sailing back. When I first heard of Fathom and its volunteering cruise, I was intrigued. The last few years, volunteerism has been on the rise. Travellers want to contribute to local communities and give back to the environment on their days off. However, not everyone is able to spend months away from home to volunteer abroad. Fathom seemed to offer this niche group a solution: providing travellers the opportunity to help in some way on their holiday. Initially, I thought this was a great idea. But after my trip with Fathom and research into the cruising industry and volunteerism, I started to have a few reservations about this type of holiday. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With a maximum capacity of 777 passengers, the Adonia is a small ship compared to the mastodons that sail the seas these days, which can have over 4000 passengers. Nevertheless, the ship impressed me. It was my first time on a cruise, and while walking the many corridors, I jolt of excitement rushed through me. The Adonia had just undergone a major refurbishment, but I was glad to see it still kept an air of class and style reminiscent of the interiors of the olden days. The wooden panelled rooms and beautiful central staircase offer an elegance I ve come to appreciate at luxury ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If you compare these allusions to the headlines today, you ll see that our society s issues and interests haven t changed much. Political scandals, the race to space, pop culture, and best selling novels; all crucial to the shaping of our society. Even though the 60 s and today s world are decades apart, there are many similarities between society then and society now that suggest the more things change, the more they stay the same. Given this information, Americans have to decide for themselves whether or not she actually did something wrong, and whether or not we can trust her as the next president of the United States. No mater who you have in a government position, and no matter what country you re in, there will always be a scandal to talk about because even if you are someone held to the highest of standards, you are still prone to making poor decisions. Now, in this modern age, Twitter has proved to be a dominant platform for presidential candidates. But who are these two rival politicians, how do they campaign, and who outperforms the other? The two candidates are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton is the democratic nominee, she is the former Secretary of State under the Obama Administration. Both flounder in the face of Logos, although given the medium, Logos is rather difficult to use. Trump does promote himself using twitter, through Hashtags for topics, but Hillary succeeds at using twitter to it s fullest as she also retweets. • 41. The Tell Tale Heart Mood This poem is about the murder of an old man. In The Tell Tale Heart, Edgar Allen Poe uses dark details, diction, and imagery to convey a haunting mood. The murderer expresses how he killed the old man and tried to hide his body. The darkness was pierced by a beam of light as the old man was haunted by the murderer stalking him. In the Tell Tale Heart the author uses dark details to show a scary and spooky mood. The disease had sharpened my senses not destroyed not dulled them . This illustrates that he is using negative and dark scary words to show spooky details about the old mans disease. When I had made an end of these labors, it was four o clock still dark as midnight . This reveals the this happened very late at night and it gives you a spooky feeling throughout the story. No doubt I now grew very noel but I talked more fluently and with a heightened voice .
