SLINGSHOT CONTRIBUTOR: Phil Loria
This week I focus on two lead candidates that will be the main determinants in the success of their
respective companies over the next couple of years.
Arrowhead Pharma is a company with several potential catalysts over the next two years that will
determine if they make it as a company. After the first quarter they only have $77 million in cash, and
they burned an average around $22 million a quarter in 2015. They are currently presenting positive
Phase I data at The International Liver Congress, which sent their shares up 12% premarket on
Wednesday. Although they will not give any exact timeline on further data releases for ARC 520, they
have five ongoing Phase II studies, and we have a

World Trade Organization ( Wto )
World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international institution that supervises and ensures the
executions of trade agreements and treaties among economic entities. Its headquarter is located in
Geneva (Switzerland). It was called Economic UN for its status of international trade. The volumes of
trade of the members have become the majority international trade. It is the maker, supervisor and
executor of multilateral trade treaties and agreements. It is an important place to settle trade disputes.
It is an influential participant in the international economic cooperation with other global institutions
and one of the most important international organizations.
WTO was born out of the negotiations called the Uruguay Round and earlier negotiations under the
General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) on 15th April 1994, aiming at cover the shortages of
GATT. GATT, the product of international free trade, is the predecessor of WTO, which was an
intergovernmental agreement about the rules of tariffs and trade signed on 30th October 1947.
However, it had been an interim agreement but not a formal international institution since it came into
force, which had hugely limited its processes of executions. Firstly, it lacked of legal binding and
powerful measures. Secondly, the interim agreement had some grey area, which cause the agreement
could not be implemented accurately. Finally, GATT discriminated different social systems. With eight
multilateral tariff and trade negotiations

Comparing The Hadrian´s Pantheon And The Justinian s Hagia...
The Hadrian s Pantheon and the Justinian s Hagia Sophia are two beautiful buildings with different
features that make them unique in their own different ways. The Hagia Sophia basilica is located in
Istanbul, Turkey, and was built by Isidore of Miletus and Anthemois of Tralles. The building is a
former Greek Orthodox patriarchal basilica, it then became an imperial mosque then after it became a
museum. The Hagia Sophia was originally called Melge Ekklesia which means (Great Church) in 360
BC, the new name Hagia Sophia came into use around 430. The basilica was a symbol of the Empire;
and had a dome on top of a cube with 40 windows around the base of it. The central dome dimensions

Twelfth Night Shame Quotes
Although Twelfth Night is renowned for its comical nature and cross dressing, on closer examination
it appears that Shakespeare has used this comedy to have a greater effect on the audience than pure
humour, supporting Berry s statement. However, before attesting that Berry is entirely correct, we
must evaluate three things: the way in which Shakespeare makes the audience feel ashamed, whether
this shame is felt by both contemporary audiences and Elizabethan/Jacobean audiences, and whether
shame is, as Berry writes the ultimate effect .
One of the ways in which Shakespeare could be seen to cast shame upon the audience is through their
reaction to the characters treatment of Malvolio. On receiving the letter, Malvolio expresses I thank
my stars I am happy (...) Jove and my stars be praised! (...) Jove I thank thee. I will smile, I will do
everything that thou wilt have me. (Act II, Scene V, lines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, his statement Thou say thou art a man. (Act I, Scene V, line 30) Is short, blunt and definite,
proving that he is in fact oblivious to her deception. This is yet another example of dramatic irony, as
only the audience and Viola are aware of her true identity. This irony shows us that Orsino has been
outsmarted by a female, straying from the traditional patriarchal views of women and consequentially
reinforcing Dusinberre s critique of the text. In our modern society, with this current new wave of
feminism, this message is particularly relevant, and so would arguably have a greater impact on an
audience than the shame felt from Twelfth Night would. If it is to have a greater effect, then it is
superior to Shakespeare s evocation of shame, and thus feeling ashamed cannot be the ultimate effect
of Shakespeare s Twelfth

Driven by Determination
When I was 16 I left my parents home. One week before I left, I wrote this in my journal: Is that a
fluttering in my belly, something rising up through my chest? A sense of apprehension, fear, or
excitement? Am I anticipating a change, a falling down, or a caving in of something I expect to be
solid? I am in a strange place, moving slowly forward with nothing that can be measured; an internal
advancement or a shedding away of old selves. I m pared down. The story of my leaving still feels like
something written in code; a code no one could understand on the rational mind level except for me. It
was my soul s decision and no amount of explaining or writing has helped enlighten those who did not
understand it. It is odd but I barely understood it myself. But to those who did understand, I had to say
very little. Fortunately they knew within the first two minutes of my telling to them. They were
inevitably people; who at some point in their lives tried to bury their own soul s yearnings and had
decided to live a perfectly fine and reasonable life until the day they could not. The day of soul
excavation remains crystal clear in their minds. Just as does all the nudges and urgings from the
universe that led them there. However, once I left, I looked back and saw this path towards that day so
clearly to me it made perfect sense but to others it didn t. So much so that when friends later asked me,
Why would you leave such a life of having a nice house,

Tab was Coca Cola s first attempt to develop a diet soft drink, using saccharin as a sugar substitute.
Introduced in 1963, the product is still sold today, however its sales have dwindled since the
introduction of Diet Coke. The Coca Cola Company also produces a number of other soft drinks
including Fanta and Sprite. Fanta s origins date back to World War II when Max Keith, who managed
Coca Cola s operations in Germany during the war, wanted to make money from Nazi Germany but
did not want the negative publicity. Keith resorted to producing a different soft drink, Fanta, which
proved to be a hit, and when Coke took over again after the war, it adopted the Fanta brand as well.
The German Fanta Klare Zitrone ( Clear Lemon Fanta ) variety became Sprite, another of the
company s bestsellers and its response to 7 Up. During the 1990s, the company responded to the
growing consumer interest in healthy beverages by introducing several new non carbonated beverage

Isolation In Beechdel s Fun Home
Fun Home follows the story of Alison as she deals with a dysfunctional family and learns about
herself and her sexuality in the process. In addition to this, another major focus within Fun Home is
Alison s father and his struggles with his sexual identity, ultimately leading to him taking his life.
There are several times within the work that Alison draws maps in order to show the audience the
physical locations of where the events portrayed took place. But beyond this, the maps serve to both
demonstrate her father Bruce s feelings of isolation and how he was perceived by the community he
lived in. To begin, maps are used as a means to demonstrate the isolation felt by Bruce throughout his
life. In the top panel on page 126, Bechdel shows the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are no other cities located on this map and all of the other labeled places are a plateau, a valley,

these relate back to nature in some way or another. Because of this the audience gets the idea that their
town is alone with no other human civilization, or even signs of human existence to be found for miles
around. This is significant to Bruce s story as it demonstrates the feelings of isolation that he most
likely felt throughout his life in Beech Creek. As Alison stated on the page before, the town itself was
somewhat close minded. He killed himself because he was a manic depressive, closeted fag and he
couldn t face living in this small minded town one more second (125). Moreover, it can be assumed
that Bruce s sexuality would not have been tolerated. Because of this Bruce would likely feel isolated
and shut out from his community leading to his constant torment as he could not

Kitak Relationship In The Kite Runner
Thesis: Khaled Hosseini strongly argues the importance of family coming together despite their
differences because family is all a person has in the end.
Amir and his father s weak relationship in Afghanistan changes when Amir finally accomplishes
something Baba can be proud about, spreading light of a possible close relationship in the future. At
the beginning of the novel, Baba is talking with his friend, Rahim Khan, about his worries for Amir
not standing up for himself, when he is being bullied. Khan responds to Baba saying, Children aren t
coloring books. You don t get to fill them in with your favorite colors (Hosseini 21). This quote
illustrates the difficult relationship Amir and his father have with each other because Baba wants to
mold him into the perfect son, but Amir does not find appreciation in the same things as Baba, causing
this mold to be ruined. Amir and Baba being polar opposites causes them to naturally separate from
each other because Baba likes building luxury to fit his ego, but Amir values the smaller gestures
people do in life. Once Amir finally does something that makes Baba proud and improves their ego,
Baba starts to appreciate Amir more and tries to do more things with him. This is depicted when
Hosseini writes, Baba and I were finally friends (Hosseini 85). Although Amir thinks they are close,
they are not as close as they could be because Baba usually invites friends and family to join them on
their outings. Also, when they are alone it is very awkward for the two of them because they do not
know each other very well. The reason Amir feels like he is gaining his father s acceptance is because
he is taking him places, rather than ignoring his existence completely, which is a significant step
compared to their relationship before. This step in their relationship illustrates they have a chance at
becoming even closer in the future. The father and son relationship truly transforms when they move
to the United States and both find appreciation in the other s differences because they only have each
other. When they move it is very difficult for Baba to assimilate to life in America, causing him to get
very frustrated. He starts to rely more on Amir for help and as a

Robert Cohn Isolationism
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway perfectly encapsulates the confused, alienated, and
immoral generation that matured into adults by the end of World War I. Hemingway opens the novel
with the narrator describing a man named Robert Cohn. He was an insecure Jewish boxer from a well
off family. The narrator ponders the reasons for Cohn being a boxer despite not caring much for the
sport. Ultimately, he finds comfort in his conclusion that Robert boxes in order to let off steam, in fact
he says, being very shy and a thoroughly nice boy, he never fought anyone except for in the gym.
Hemingway is setting up Cohn s character as a metaphor for the older generation. Cohn is shown to
have a strict set of morals and believes only resorting to violence when necessary. ... Show more

Later on, the reader finds out that Cohn is not a war veteran, despite all of his friends having served.
Robert has not faced the violence that the others have. He, like the older generation, will never
understand the trauma and change brought on by WWI. He assumes he can still move on with the
morals taught to him by his parents, and their parents before them, despite all that has happened.
Correspondingly, Harding s presidency was founded on the same idea, a Return to normalcy . This is
proven wrong when Cohn breaks and attacks Jake, even though Jake had done nothing wrong to him.
This directly contradicted Cohn s beliefs and left him confused and upset. Afterwards, Jake returns to
the hotel to find Robert crying in the dark. He asks to shake Jake s hand through his tears. This is
representative of the shattering of previous beliefs and the desperate measures to get them back in the
early 1920 s. Cohn resorts to what he knows, despite it not fixing his actions. The damage had been
done, and no amount of pretending could change

The invasion of Normandy was one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. It took place in German

Big Time College Sports
Big time college sports... selects athletes mainly for their athletics, not academics, interests, and
abilities this shows that in reality colleges view athletes more as athletes students than student athletes
(Eckard 211). This only goes to show why the graduation rate for college athletes is so low. However
higher education make their graduation rate seem more favorable so that they can continue to get and
recruit more skilled amateur players to generate millions of dollars for their facilities. Although some
may say colleges do a effective job of taking care of and graduating their student athletes, conversely
colleges student athletes graduation rate is low and the student athletes don t get what they desire. If
colleges start putting the students first in the term student athletes then there would be more college
student athletes making the grade.
Many colleges say they have good graduation rates for athletes when the truth is their graduation rate

However higher education facilities are trying to improve their graduation rate for athletes. Some are
doing it by giving the students a valuable education, while others are doing is by using scandals. The

Was Magellan Worth Defending Research Paper
Was Magellan worth defending? There is a lot of controversy about Magellan. Some people believe
Magellan should was not worth defending, while others believe he should have been defended.
Magellan went to Spain to get his crew and get someone to fund his voyage. Magellan was a captain
of five ships. He died in the Philippine islands in a hand to hand combat with native Americans. When
people ask was Magellan worth defending it means that did Magellan deserve to get saved. I believe
that Magellan should have been saved and was worth defending, because he was firm not cruel, he
was a really good navigator, and he died for his beliefs. Magellan was firm not cruel. According to the

Tess Of The D Urbervilles By Thomas Hardy
The novel, Tess of the d Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy depicts the heroine, Tess and the tragedies that
are seemingly continuously finding their way to her. Tess s tragedy is caused by the societal
environment that she is in that finds value in gender divisions and economic growth as well as
religious beliefs. The internal strife that Tess faces along with those in Tess s life are the cause of her
downfall. Hardy shows that Tess is fated to fail throughout the novel by creating characters that
impede on her success who represent the values of era. The most prominent reason why Tess has such
a tragic ending is due to the people that have a great influence on her, these people being her parents,

When Alec and Tess are riding to Tantridge in the cart, he drives it wildly, scaring Tess and forcing her
to beg him to slow down. Alec states, If anyone can manage this horse I can... which feeds into the
ideology that men were to be in control (39). The societal rules are what controls the actions of the
characters throughout the novel which cause Tess s downfall.
During the novel, Europe is going through industrialization. The industrialization of cities around Tess
caused a sort of deconstruction for those who were living in more rural areas of Wessex. With the
growth of industrialization came the growth of capitalism. Tess s family is poor and large living in
rural England. Since Tess was the oldest of her siblings she faced most of the work load as her family
enjoyed the thrills of life. After the death of their horse, which impeded their means of income, Tess
was forced to meet with her estranged family, the d Urbervilles to claim kin in hopes of being given an
employment opportunity. After meeting with Alec for a short while at the d Urberville estate, Tess
finds herself to be overwhelmed with the riches of the d Urbervilles and demanding demeanor of Alec
and does not want to go back to the estate. The economic failures of Tess s family are a great factor of
Tess s downfall. She is unable to become the teacher she wanted to be and finish her education

Prince Qualities
The Qualities of the Prince, written by Niccolo Machiavelli, is one of his most celebrated works
(Prince 219). Machiavelli s work includes two contrasting forces called luck and character. When
Machiavelli mentions luck, he means one s fortune, chance, or fate. Machiavelli also includes
character; one s virtues or life values. Machiavelli writes about how a Prince should be. Many princes
are considered extremely virtuous or extremely cruel: one cruel, another merciful; one treacherous,
another faithful; one effeminate and cowardly, another bold and courageous; one humane, another
haughty; one lascivious, another chaste; one trustworthy, another cunning; one harsh, another lenient;
one serious, another frivolous; one religious, another unbelieving; and the like? (Prince 224) Should a
prince be nice and caring or evil and cruel? This question is what Machiavelli answers through his
writing. Machiavelli believes that a prince should know everything there is about war and needs to be
prepared for an attack at any given time, even if a nation is in a time of peace. Machiavelli proclaims
that a prince should know his own country because he needs to know how to better defend it. This is
an exceptional point because, if a prince does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Iran-Contra Affair
The Iran Contra Affair The Iran Contra Affair was an underground operation within the CIA that was
interwoven between two foreign policy issues that were unlikely to connect had the players in the
ordeal not utilized one to benefit the other. In the early 1900 s, the United States aimed to protect its
interests in Central America, specifically Nicaragua. The United States sent in troops of Marines to
help maintain order in Nicaragua due to civil unrest over a Presidential dispute. The United States was
willing to send in the troops over a concern about Mexico gaining prestige in Nicaragua by backing
Juan Bautista Sacasa, who was previously overthrown as Nicaragua s President. Sacasa was trying to
regain his status of President, though the United States supported Adolfo Diaz. Sacasa withdrew from
trying to claim the presidency after he made an agreement with the U.S., though in 1932 he did finally

subordinates. He was the head of the Nicaraguan National Guardsmen. In 1936, with the aid of the
United States, the National Guardsmen overthrew Sacasa. The United States was instrumental in the
efforts to overthrow Sacasa through providing food, training, and uniforms to the National

Nicaragua. The Somoza family dynasty remained in power for the next 46 years. A group of rebels

Powers of Horror by Julia Kristeva, Questions and Answers
To what extent are we all strangers to ourselves , even in our own countries? Answer with reference to
Kristeva s book.
Exile, the reality and practice of being barred from a native country, has prolifically influenced many
philosophers theoretical writings. Indeed, Julia Kristeva being in exile from her native Bulgaria is a
foreigner in an unascertained land. Being an outcast influence s her philosophical, political and
sociological extended essay Strangers to Ourselves published in 1991. The book addresses a problem
that Kristeva has experienced first hand: the struggle of being a foreigner in Western culture and the
difficulties that people and nations have with treating foreigners residing in their motherland. Jealousy
drives our nationalist temperaments and Kristeva explores the figure of the unconscious foreigner in
all of us. Strangers to Ourselves draws on the difficulty that natives have in accepting the stranger
within and if we can come to terms with this notion. The exile is often a foreigner in an unfamiliar
place or a foreigner repressed within the native s unconscious, however a feeling of strangeness can
also occur through an exclusion from the hegemonic rationalism of modern society (Lechte: 79).
There are at least two other forms of exile that can produce the foreign ness in us: being an exile as a
way to thrive intellectually and imaginatively and being alienated as a woman. Historically and in the
contemporary world, natives incite prejudice onto

Quotes For Lord Capulet
Essay Outline
The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees play at least 22 games a year just against each other,
not including playoffs. They are also the largest rival baseball team of all times. Romeo and Juliet
could be portrayed using the Capulets as Boston and the Montagues as New York. At one of the games
between them taking place in Fenway Park, Romeo and Juliet meet and hit it off right away. Although
their rivals, they do not realize who they are until after the game. In my favorite scene, Act 4 Scene 2,
Lord Capulet plays a very important part by talking to Juliet about the wedding with Paris.
I think that Lord Capulet is the most needed character in this scene because it is all based on his inner
attitude. When Juliet begs for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After her speech, he goes straight to business face. If I directed a play of this, then I would direct the
person playing Lord Capulet to walk around and talk to himself about random things like caterer,
flowers, place, etc... and then start talking about his rewards because, as it says above, all he cares
about is what is in it for him.
Staging is just one element in the theater genre, but it is a very important one. If I had the chance to
direct Romeo and Juliet in the modernized version I created, then the lights for Act 4 Scene 2 would
be bright, like fluorescent lights were everywhere. Even if Lord Capulet was not holding a phone that
lights up, we would need to signify that he is using one and what he is doing with it. That would need
it s own lighting. The camera angle if we ever filmed it would move from place to place. I believe that
it would start on Lord Capulet and then everyone else would answer while he is on his phone. The
camera when Juliet enters would be focused on her, maybe with her running into the room where her
father is. All of the actors need costumes to make the whole scene come alive. Lord Capulet would be
wearing a suit, black with a light blue undershirt and a red tie would be added to this to make the
audience believe that he had just come from work. The suit will also show that even at home, Lord
Capulet is all about the money.

Deception In A Scandal In Bohemia
Wit is defined as mental sharpness or inventiveness. In the Victorian age, women were supposed to be
inferior to men which is why this story is intriguing. In the short story , A Scandal In Bohemia , Conan
uses the character Irene to portray how deception in one s character is commonly overlooked, even by
people who think there is nobody better than themselves.
During the Victorian era, there were gender and class issues. These play a huge part in A Scandal In
Bohemia . Conan wrote this story around the late 1800s and early 1900s. In England, men were
considered the man of the house, and women were to stay at home. Also, princes were to marry royal
and not break the royal bloodline. That was their standards.
Holmes is too smart for his own good. He could never love anyone more than he loves his work.
While his best friend, Watson, is very social and outgoing, ...Holmes...loathes every form of society
with his whole Bohemian soul... (Doyle 3). Holmes did more observing than creating real
relationships with people because he sees through everyone, and nobody deems worthy in his eyes.
This is why his piqued interest in Irene is peculiar.

The men of the tribe built and used the tools. While making the tools and weapons, they followed the

The Theories Of Crime And Crime
Since long time immemorial, many of people figured out explanations and theories about crime and
those circumstances what encourage people to become criminals. Researchers of crime have looked of
issues from different approaches, such as biological, psychological, and sociological. These developed
thoughts created a fundamental basis of the criminology as a science and become to one of the most
important issues of discipline. Furthermore, they figured out thoughts about who are criminals and
how to recognize, and treat them. One of explanation of the term a criminal could be define as, a
person who has committed a crime. History knows many of scientists, such as Cesare Lombroso,
those sociologists of Chicago School, Nels Anderson, Ernest Burgess, Ruth Shonle Cavan, Edward
Franklin and others, who came up with different sociological theories, supported by evidences of
research work, about circumstances to commit a crime. These theories have looked to find solutions
for concern of criminals are born or created by society. However, to discover an answer to issues is

Student Diversity At Our School
When I went on stage during our weekly assembly and announced the start of affinity groups at our
school, I was oblivious to the reaction of the hundreds of students in the audience. I was focused on
speaking clearly and getting through my short speech, excited by what I was announcing. I didn t
know that the few sentences I read off a piece of paper would change my perception of my school, my
friends, and myself. Almost as soon as I got out of the assembly, before I even got to my next class, I
began hearing people criticizing affinity groups. Many people were saying that this was segregating
students, that we were being reverse racists , that there was no need for the groups or any discussions
about race, that SDLC (the diversity club I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only people who had had any experience with these groups were the people who had attended the
SDLC conference, where we participated in our respective affinity groups. Soon after we announced
the start of the groups, other students confronted me about the groups. Many people had an almost
visceral reaction against the concept of the groups, having been taught for so long that it is wrong to
single out people for their race. I understand why it was hard for people to acknowledge the need for
these groups, as it meant acknowledging that our whole system had flaws; that there was still racism
and prejudice within our community. This is not something people were comfortable discussing. My
school s motto is Excellence and Honor and many students are incredibly smart and high achieving.
We pride ourselves not just on our academic strength but on our honor code and ethical behavior. This
made people particularly hesitant to pop the bubble of excellence and perfection by discussing things
like racism. I d like to think that I am naturally an open minded and accepting person, but perhaps if I
hadn t been to the SDLC conference and participated in the affinity groups there, I too would have
been skeptical of the program. The introduction of something so new and unfamiliar was

Grant Wood’s American Gothic Essay
Grant Wood s American Gothic is one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art.
The painting brought Wood almost instant fame after being exhibited for the first time at the Art
Institute of Chicago in 1930. It is probably the most reproduced and parodied works of art, and has
become a staple within American pop culture. The portrait of what appears to be a couple, standing
solemnly in front of their mid western home seems to be a simplistic representation of rural America.
As simple as it sounds, when looking deeper into this image, it reveals something much more
complex. The first thing to notice about this painting is how incredibly involved and realistic the
brushwork is. The couple s faces are so delicately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is almost a reflection of the man s trident. That same pitchfork shape also appears in the window of
the house that sits in between both figure s heads. Repetition can also be seen in the dotted pattern of
the woman s outfit, which also appears in the material of the curtain that hangs in the house s window.
The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be
stretched, and narrowed. The pitchfork s slender prongs and the green stripes on the man s shirt also
add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood boards that make up the
house and the barn, keep the viewer s eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood s use of
verticality in this painting is overwhelming. There is also a striking luminosity to the painting. The
man and the woman s faces appear to slightly glow, as if you can really see the reflection of the sun
beaming off of their skin. This was achieved by a complex method of applying glazes. Wood would
apply a layer of oil paint, allow it to dry, and then varnish it. This tedious process would be repeated
numerous times. It was a process perfected by the 16th century Venetian painter, Titian. The series of
glazes seems to have created an overwhelming sense of depth and radiance within the paint. Wood s
use of glazes is not the only reference to early Italian painters. It is clear that Wood was inspired by

Marion was given the rank of first lieutenant in Captain William Moultrie s company of infantry.
In June, Grant led his expedition on the same route Montgomerie had taken. Sensing another ambush
at a pass near the site of Montgomerie s battle, Grant dispatched Marion with 30 men to flush out the
Cherokees. Using trees for cover, Marion s detachment cautiously advanced within range of the
Cherokees, whereupon the Indians sounded their war cry and fired. By the time the pass was secured,
only nine of Marion s men were left. Grant s column proceeded through the pass and engaged the
Cherokees for several hours, until the Indians fled. Marion s capture of the pass allowed Grant to
create a path of destruction in the Cherokee lands, burning 15 Indian towns and destroying their corn
crops. Finally, Chief Attakullakulla, known by some as Little Carpenter, surrendered.
Marion s courageous efforts in the Cherokee War did not go unnoticed. When he returned to his old
lifestyle by leasing farm lands along the west bank of the Santee River, he was accorded great respect
and became a successful planter. Although he spent considerable time hunting and fishing, he was well
acquainted with details of the surrounding lands. He also had an active social life and regularly visited
his brothers and neighboring Huguenot families. During this prosperous time, he attained a sizable
degree of wealth. In 1773,

Cultural Culture In Turkey
Culture is defined as the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time ,
according to Merriam Webster (2016). Even though Turkey as a sovereign nation is fairly young, it s
cultural roots can be dated as far back as Alexander the Great. The Turkic people have an extremely
long history and a very diverse culture. Long before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in
1923, the area had seen its fair share of war and strife. Since the Hellenization of the Anatolian
Peninsula by Alexander the Great, the area has seen a constant power struggle for an area that was
known as the Crossroads of the World (modern day Istanbul). Since Istanbul was once the main
trading hub of the known world, it s one of the most contributing factors for the countries rich and
diverse culture. It is important to understand the differences between cultures so that we may better
understand our similarities. When met with other cultures it is possible to be offensive without
knowing it. Being that Turkey has many cultures that differ vastly, it could be quite easy for an
unknowledgeable tourist to be offensive. Taking the time to do research before traveling to new areas
might allow a person to save face, and avoid offense or embarrassment when visiting foreign places.

Terra Nova Sparknotes
The play Terra Nova opens with the protagonist Captain Robert Falcon Scott, trying to write a letter to
the public. However, Scott was having difficulty to do so, as he s too weak and weary, he seems to
have suffered from frostbites in his hand but he continues to write, speaking his words out loud. At the
same time Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer also enters the stage, introducing Scott to the
members of the Royal Society, who gathered together in honored of him. Amundsen introduction of
Scott was the first hint to the audiences that Scott was already dead, and his story is told through the
journal and letters that were later found.
Captain Scott s exploration began with the scene of his four men s Oates, Bowers, Wilson, and Evans
crossing the Antarctic on foot, dragging along a one thousand pound sled with them. While their
competitor, Amundsen was much faster in the race by using sled dogs, later slaughtering them when
they re no longer in good used. Scott refuses the aid of dogs, as he perceives it to be barbaric. Each of
Scott s men has a different personality, bringing life to the play. Oates is a hardened soldier, while
Bowers keeps the men on their feet with his optimism, Wilson plays important roles, as he s the doctor
and Evans is the largest and strongest of the five men. However, Evan was the first one to fall.

The Battle Of The Second Punic War
Carthage and the Roman Republic fought the second Punic War for control of the lands bordering the
Mediterranean Sea, considered the entire civilized world at the time. The battles of the second Punic
War show Hannibal Barca to be not only the greatest military leader of his age, but perhaps one of the
greatest generals of all time. By examining one of Hannibal s most spectacular victories, the paradigm
for a battle of annihilation, military professionals can learn how the Roman commanders might have
defeated Carthage s General. In conducting an analysis of the Battle of Cannae, I will postulate an
alternate outcome by introducing intelligence utilization that would have turned this battle into a
victory for Rome.
Battle Analysis
Definition of the Subject
From audacious gambits to canny tactics, leaders scrutinize Hannibal s legacy of strategy even now,
almost 2200 years after his death. Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote (1948) that, every ground commander
seeks the battle of annihilation; so far as conditions permit, he tries to duplicate in modern war the
classic example of Cannae. (p. 325) The Battle of Cannae is eponymous for the village of the same
name, part of Apulia in a region of southern Italy. The generals for the Roman forces were the consuls
Gaius Terentius Varro and Lucius Aemilius Paullus, while Hannibal and his brother Mago Barcid led
the armies of Carthage. On the morning of the August 2, 216 BC, the armies of Rome took the field, in

Bilingualism
What does it mean to be bilingual? Is it as simple as having the ability to speak two languages? Or
does it have a deeper meaning? Martin Espada and Richard Rodriguez have opposite views on the
concept of bilingualism. Espada feels Latinos have the right to speak Spanish anywhere, considering
language is intertwined with identity. Conversely, Rodriguez believes that to truly understand a
language, you must forget the language that is already known to feel accepted in society. These ideas,
similar to mine are not as simple as speaking two languages. To me the idea of bilingualism is
respecting the two languages that are spoken by having the courage to speak them anywhere, at
anytime. According to Martin Espada the idea of bilingualism is way deeper than just speaking two
languages. Being bilingual to Espada means that both the languages spoken are intertwined with
identity. This claim is constructed in his essay The New Bathroom Policy at English High School. He
informs us of what he has learned about bilingual people in America: I have never met a single person
who didn t want to learn English. What they want to do is retain their language, culture and identity
(Espada 164 167). English is a powerful language in America, the Latinos that reside there feel that
learning English could jeopardize their ability to speak Spanish. Moreover, Espada also uses an
experience he had at META, in which the goal was to stop English from becoming the official
language in

On July 4, 1865 in Savannah, Georgia, the 22nd Iowa mustered out of federal service after a reading

Video Games And The Era Of Technology
Video games have been a favorite pass time for Americans and people all over the world for many
centuries. I have always loved video games ever since I was introduced to the Nintendo 64 when I was
a little girl. I found Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong very addicting when I began playing it.
However, a new level of game addiction has been introduced into the era of technology. Games on our
phones have been a new popularity in recent years. Usually when I hear the words video game, I think
of a console, like the Wii or PlayStation. I don t consider games that are on the app store like Flappy
Bird or Temple Run a legitimate video game. Even though they don t fall under that category, these
games are downloaded over a million times. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I played Angry Birds myself and found the game to be very addictive and fun. I remember playing it
consistently for about two weeks. I didn t play the game for five minutes at a time; I played for about
2 hours trying to pass as many levels as I could in one session. Angry Birds was an activity that took
time away from other things that needed to be done and was less and activity in [my] day than a blank
space in [my] day, (Anderson 66). Anderson argues that a phone like the iPhone became a legitimate
game console because of all the games available from the app store (Anderson 67). However, the
downside to a phone being a game console is that, it responds not to the fast twitch button combos...
but to more intuitive and intimate motion: poking, pinching, tapping, tickling, (Anderson 67). A
shooter game would not seem to work on a phone, which does not make it a game console in my
opinion. This type of game attracts the type of person who is not a high level gamer and would like a
game that does not cost a lot of money and strategy to play. Some people argue that these little
minisystems are better because they do not have the distraction of narrative, (Anderson 67). Besides
being a mini game that people like because of no narrative, stupid games have been said to be an
answer to humanity s problems, (Anderson 67).

Charlie Parker Take 5 Analysis
Introduction
This task requires the close comparison of two jazz pieces of different decades and their defining
styles. The musical styles, instrumentation, compositional techniques, structure, technology and role
of lyrics are key factors in the comparison and will be focused on. The artists lives as well as the
historical and social contexts of those decades will also be analysed because they played key roles in
the composition of the music.
Charlie Parker s 1945 Bebop recording Ko Ko will be compared to Take Five composed by Paul
Desmond and Dave Brubeck.
Context
Ko Ko was composed and recorded in 1945 which marked the end of the Second World War. The
original recorded version featured Parker playing alto saxophone, Miles Davis on trumpet, Curley
Russelland on double bass, Max Roach on drums and Dizzy Gillespie on piano, instead of his main

Take Five, a West Coast Cool Jazz piece, was composed by Paul Desmond during the Cold War and
performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out . The piece got its name due
to its 5/4 time signature, which is very unusual. This reflects the experimental nature of West Coast
Cool Jazz. I was breaking a whole bunch of rules. (Zollo 1991), but this evidently worked because it

The Effects of Violent Video Games on Young Children
Violence in video games is among one of the most controversial and discussed topics up to this day.
Many believe that the violence in said video game is an exact consequence of a child s behavior. There
has been proof that violence seen in young children has increased in the United States over the years,
however, this could be due to a multitude of other factors. Research and a meta analysis find positive
linkages between children s and young adults violent video game play and aggressive cognitions,
aggressive affect, aggressive behaviors, and desensitization to violence. Due to the rising levels of
aggression, it leads children to believe that violence is the way to deal with issues. The time children
spend on these new media is ten times as much as the time they spend on, for instance, reading for
pleasure. The violent nature of the television programs and video games to which children are exposed
is of specific concern (Polman et al. 256). The result is that limitations and barriers are placed to tone
down accessibility to these games, the limitations being the Entertainment Software Rating Board

The Common Core Standards For Students
The Common Core Standards are words that we are all formulary with. We all have heard those 3
words once before but I m sure most of us didn t know the real meaning behind it unless we work in a

academic standards in mathematics and English language arts with literacy, also can be known as
ELA. These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each
grade. We are told that the standards were created to make sure that when the time comes for the
students to graduate from high school they will have all the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed
in not only college, but their career, and life regardless of where they are from. The Common Core
focuses most on developing the critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills students will
need to be successful. Those are all things that students all around the world need in order to move
forward, and continue to get their education. Having these standers make it easier for all the teachers
around the world to know where they need to have their students be by the end of each academic
school year, but what if there was a different way for our teachers to know where each child should
stand without having to use the common core standards? What if some children don t work well with

The Crucifixion Across Biblical Writings
The Crucifixion across Biblical Writings
The Bible has been a major cultural influence throughout the world for centuries. This work has taken
roots in movies, music, literature, art, and more, and as a result the interpretations and spin offs are
endless. The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by José Saramago is one of these interpretations.
Saramago is knowledgeable on the Bible as well as information about the historical circumstances of
the time period. Putting these two factors together, he created a novel that humanizes the characters to
make it more understandable to readers, as well as sculpt a unique backstory that differs from anything
Christians would find acceptable. However, he was so efficient in doing so, that some would ... Show

Judas betrays Jesus and he is brought to the Prefect Pilate after being arrested based on the suspicion
of acting treasonably by declaring himself King of the Jews. Pilate interrogates him several times and
continuously finds that Jesus has done nothing wrong. After much time and the suggestions of the
crowd, Pilate sentences Jesus to death by crucifixion, and he ultimately ends up on the cross. Jesus
requests that Pilate write a specific inscription on the cross that says; Jesus of Nazareth, King of the
Jews. Pilate tells the others that what he had written he had written, and then Jesus begins to declare
that he is thirsty. At this point someone put of sponge of wine to his mouth and he says: It is finished

Saramago version of the story is much different. The scene starts by Jesus explaining to everyone how
they are going to die. He cooks up a plan that he thinks will save the people. So, instead of die on the

agree with his plan and think that if he is the Son of God, he should die as the Son of God. Judas
ultimately volunteered to help, Jesus thanks him, and he is arrested. When questioned by Pilate, Pilate

able to overcome some challenges. Only, to be pushed too far to death by his older brother who did
not want to pull his brother in a wagon.
With a family already preparing to bury this little baby boy in a coffin before he would see three
months Doodle has other ideas of when his life will come to an end. Wanting nothing else in the world
the narrator wanted a brother who was just as athletically capable as him, only with great fight would
that be possible. Everyone from the family knew that he would never be all straight in the head.
However, one afternoon as I watched him him, my head poked between the iron post of the foot of the
bed, he looked straight at me, and grinned. I skipped through the rooms, down the echoing halls,
shouting, Mama, he smiled. He s all there! He s all there! and he was. Doodle was given the adversity
of this heart condition but he had proved everyone wrong once and he would definitely do it several
more times and continue to fight for a better life. Trembling, he d push himself up, turning first red,
then a soft purple, and finally collapse back onto the bed like a an old worn out doll. Doodle did not
give up easily he wanted better for his life, just like his brother had wished for. Doodle may have been
born invalid at birth, but he sure wasn t going to stay that way. Doodle prevailed during his time he
also was a fighter and battled to get stronger and better with his older brothers help.
Not wanting to be pulled down by a wagon on the daily from pulling Doodle his brother set out to
help him learn to walk after showing Doodle the casket that was made for him when he was just a
baby. Teaching him to walk this would not be a easy process since he could only barely crawl. Doodle
would need to gather all the muscle he could and work very hard to accomplish being able to walk.
Working daily down in Horsehead Landing through the tough days they were able to get Doodles

Mrs. Buckley
8 November 2017
Therefore, as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of
you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put
on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Colossians 3:12 14 New International Version (NIV)
Everyone Deserves to be Happy:
Upholding all constitutional values for all American citizens despite Religious persecutions

While others may say that those who are deeply rooted in their religion have the right to express their
beliefs just as members of the LGBTQ community have the right to express their sexuality, it is
unconstitutional and frankly frowned upon in most religions to treat others with anything less than the
respect that they deserve solely because their choices may not align with a certain religion s beliefs.
As Christians, as with any other religion, you have the freedom to express yourself without
persecution but, as we all know, one of the greatest and most important commandments in
Christianity, as stated in Mark 12:31, is Love your neighbor as you love yourself (The Holy Bible).
Though the bill of rights states that any person born in America has the freedom of religion and the
freedom to practice whatever actions that belief may entitle, our constitution also states that we have
the freedom of expression. By passing bills such as HB1523, we are further proving that
discrimination is a prevalent problem in America s society. America is known to be the land of the
free. While some may say that this only means that American citizens are not kept in bondage and are
allowed to make their own decisions, it also means that we were born with the freedom to be who we
are. How can anyone live the American dream if they are constantly being frowned upon and judged
by others?

Essay on The Great Railroad Strike
The Great Railroad Strike
In the first half of the 19th Century the working class in the newly industrializing American society
suffered many forms of exploitation. The working class of the mid nineteenth century, with constant
oppression by the capitalist and by the division between class, race, and ethnicity, made it difficult to
form solidarity. After years of oppression and exploitation by the ruling class, the working class struck
back and briefly paralyzed American commerce. The strike, which only lasted a few weeks, was the
spark needed to ignite a national revolt by the working class with the most violent labor upheavals of
the century.
Railroads were the big business of the mid nineteenth century. The rail companies employed ... Show

During this period, many Americans, and particularly industrialists and the emerging middle class,
came to embrace the doctrine of laissez faire. The poor were so because they lacked ability and
determination. The rich were comfortable because of their superior talents and thrift, argued
supporters of a new ideology which turned Charles Darwin s theory of evolution into a new vision of
society s survival of the fittest.
As the rich became richer and the poor became poorer, it was realized by the laborers of the railroad
that their nation s economic growth and prosperity was not being equally shared among the people.
Coupled with years of wage cuts (35% over 3 years), and workforce reductions, that then required
remaining workers to work 15 18 hour days, the workers fought back.
In May of 1877 the Pennsylvania line announced another wage reduction of 10% to the worker s along
with speed ups (double the work). At this point the workers accepted it. Then in July of 1877 the
Baltimore Ohio line announced a 10% cut in pay. The workers questioned management, ‘how could
they survive on these wages and terms? But the owners did not listen, instead they took the position
‘quit if you don t like it .
On July 16, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, some of the workers decided to ‘quit and refused to work.
This spontaneous strike sparked protests in other cities including St. Louis,

How Jesus Christ Fulfilled The Covenants God Made With...
Introduction
Throughout the history of the world, God has been working to bring humanity back to him. Due to the
loss of constant communion in the fall, God set forth multiple promises to eventually establish his
eternal Kingdom, the New Testament, is the culmination of these promises. The Gospels are the most
specific in how Jesus Christ fulfilled the covenants God made with Abraham and David. More
importantly he is the fulfillment of the new covenant, which washes away sin and brings humanity
back into communion with God. What is modeled in the Gospels is reaffirmed in Acts, by the way the
church is to function according to the culmination of the Covenants. Acts begins to reveal the great
mystery that is the inclusion of the Gentiles in God s covenant. Paul s Epistles take the culmination a
step further and defend the idea that the fulfillment of God s covenants does not just affect the people
of Israel, but the Gentiles as well. The General epistles teach that the people are no longer bound by
the mosaic covenant since the New Covenant was fulfilled via Jesus Christ. Yet practice of the law is
still an important factor of the Christian life style even if superseded by the New Covenant. Revelation
shows that covenants are leading up to the lord s victory and salvation of his people. The sins of the
Jews and Gentiles are washed away by Jesus the blood of the lamb so in reality the battle is already
won because of the New Covenants fulfillment in Jesus. It is clear from

Analysis Of La Lengua De Las Mariposas
La Lengua de las Mariposas, directed by José Luis Cuerda, is a marvelous and powerful film that
explores Spain s past through the lens of education. Cuerda does this by exhibiting the contrast
between the 1931 1936 Republic and the dictatorships that ruled the country just before and after the
Spanish Civil War through the relationship between Moncho, a young boy, and Don Gregorio, his
teacher. The film depicts the Republic s aims for a liberal education and the pressures this produced
within the more conservative region of society. Overall this film portrays both the freedom of this
short period in Spain s history and the beginning of Franco s oppressive dictatorship. There are many
layers of themes that are subtlety imbedded into the film. The political theme of the film is a truly
intriguing portrayal of life in Spain during this tense time. The underlying message of the film is one
of defending the freedom of expression. It explores the importance of gaining knowledge through one
s own personal experiences. Culture is used as a pathway to achieve personal freedom. In addition, the
film attempts to break some of the taboos surrounding an adequate education, focusing instead on this
education through experience. Observation is used as a way to awaken the senses. Another theme that
was imbedded in the film was childhood with the inclusion of a vast number of topics. The film not
only contains scenes that deal with war but it includes scenes that include family, love, and

Memory Vs Bilingual And Memory
Bilinguals and memory Language is an important way to communicate with people around us in the
world, but many people around us speak more than one language. Bilinguals are people who can
speak at least two languages. There are a lot of debating on whether monolinguals have better memory
or bilinguals. Many research has shown similar results with the similar experiments. It is true that
monolinguals do know more words in a language but when it comes to memory, bilinguals have better
memory. Bilinguals do make grammar mistakes a lot, and mix up the languages to get their point
across but overall, they are better able to focus on what to remember.
Body
We always hear that knowing two languages is better than one, it will take you farther in future.
People who speak at least two languages are bilinguals. A study conducted by Blom et. al (2017)
compare bilinguals and monolinguals and their memory ability (p. 3). Bilinguals have outperformed
monolinguals in memory experiment (Blom et. al, 2017, p. 1). According to Blom et. al (2017)
bilinguals pick up cues to know remember and answer correctly (p. 2). If a bilingual knows both
languages really well than their cognitive ability is much higher than a monolingual (Blom et. al,
2017, p. 2). The study had 176 children from age six or seven participating in the study, all
participants Socioeconomic status, age, and intelligence matched (Blom et al, 2017, p. 4). The
researchers used different tasks to test participants

My Greatest Experience
The greatest experience of my life
Can you recall the greatest experience of your life? Football has been a love of mine since I was a
undersized kid. I really grew attached to a team called the Washington Redskins. A lot of my sundays
were spent in front of the television gazing as the Redskins put in work. On September 24th my dad
came home with pale papers in his rugged hand. He placed the papers in my grip which were tickets to
go see the Redskins play the Chiefs in Kansas City on October 2nd.
First off, the excitement I felt rush throughout my body was nothing i ve ever felt in the time that i ve
spent on this Earth. It was hard to believe that I was actually going to see the team I watched growing
up. One of the best parts about it was going to the loudest stadium in the United States. I knew going
into the game that the Kansas City Chiefs were no joke, because they were undefeated on the season at
that point.
Secondly, I woke up on the second of October smelling victory, which also smelt like pancakes. I
tasted a golden sticky syrup on my puffy pancakes. I had glorious pieces of bacon that tasted like god
made them himself. I made sure to get enough food to last me the lengthy excruciating car ride.
Next, it was time for a quick shower so I didn t smell funky. It was probably one of the quickest
showers I have ever taken due to being ready to get on the road for the game. Please don t take points
off for this but, I am always curious if teachers read

World Trade Organization ( Wto ) World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international institution that supervises and ensures the executions of trade agreements and treaties among economic entities. Its headquarter is located in Geneva (Switzerland). It was called Economic UN for its status of international trade. The volumes of trade of the members have become the majority international trade. It is the maker, supervisor and executor of multilateral trade treaties and agreements. It is an important place to settle trade disputes. It is an influential participant in the international economic cooperation with other global institutions and one of the most important international organizations. WTO was born out of the negotiations called the Uruguay Round and earlier negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) on 15th April 1994, aiming at cover the shortages of GATT. GATT, the product of international free trade, is the predecessor of WTO, which was an intergovernmental agreement about the rules of tariffs and trade signed on 30th October 1947. However, it had been an interim agreement but not a formal international institution since it came into force, which had hugely limited its processes of executions. Firstly, it lacked of legal binding and powerful measures. Secondly, the interim agreement had some grey area, which cause the agreement could not be implemented accurately. Finally, GATT discriminated different social systems. With eight multilateral tariff and trade negotiations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Twelfth Night Shame Quotes Although Twelfth Night is renowned for its comical nature and cross dressing, on closer examination it appears that Shakespeare has used this comedy to have a greater effect on the audience than pure humour, supporting Berry s statement. However, before attesting that Berry is entirely correct, we must evaluate three things: the way in which Shakespeare makes the audience feel ashamed, whether this shame is felt by both contemporary audiences and Elizabethan/Jacobean audiences, and whether shame is, as Berry writes the ultimate effect . One of the ways in which Shakespeare could be seen to cast shame upon the audience is through their reaction to the characters treatment of Malvolio. On receiving the letter, Malvolio expresses I thank my stars I am happy (...) Jove and my stars be praised! (...) Jove I thank thee. I will smile, I will do everything that thou wilt have me. (Act II, Scene V, lines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, his statement Thou say thou art a man. (Act I, Scene V, line 30) Is short, blunt and definite, proving that he is in fact oblivious to her deception. This is yet another example of dramatic irony, as only the audience and Viola are aware of her true identity. This irony shows us that Orsino has been outsmarted by a female, straying from the traditional patriarchal views of women and consequentially reinforcing Dusinberre s critique of the text. In our modern society, with this current new wave of feminism, this message is particularly relevant, and so would arguably have a greater impact on an audience than the shame felt from Twelfth Night would. If it is to have a greater effect, then it is superior to Shakespeare s evocation of shame, and thus feeling ashamed cannot be the ultimate effect of Shakespeare s Twelfth ... • 7. Driven by Determination When I was 16 I left my parents home. One week before I left, I wrote this in my journal: Is that a fluttering in my belly, something rising up through my chest? A sense of apprehension, fear, or excitement? Am I anticipating a change, a falling down, or a caving in of something I expect to be solid? I am in a strange place, moving slowly forward with nothing that can be measured; an internal advancement or a shedding away of old selves. I m pared down. The story of my leaving still feels like something written in code; a code no one could understand on the rational mind level except for me. It was my soul s decision and no amount of explaining or writing has helped enlighten those who did not understand it. It is odd but I barely understood it myself. But to those who did understand, I had to say very little. Fortunately they knew within the first two minutes of my telling to them. They were inevitably people; who at some point in their lives tried to bury their own soul s yearnings and had decided to live a perfectly fine and reasonable life until the day they could not. The day of soul excavation remains crystal clear in their minds. Just as does all the nudges and urgings from the universe that led them there. However, once I left, I looked back and saw this path towards that day so clearly to me it made perfect sense but to others it didn t. • 10. Kitak Relationship In The Kite Runner Thesis: Khaled Hosseini strongly argues the importance of family coming together despite their differences because family is all a person has in the end. Amir and his father s weak relationship in Afghanistan changes when Amir finally accomplishes something Baba can be proud about, spreading light of a possible close relationship in the future. At the beginning of the novel, Baba is talking with his friend, Rahim Khan, about his worries for Amir not standing up for himself, when he is being bullied. Khan responds to Baba saying, Children aren t coloring books. You don t get to fill them in with your favorite colors (Hosseini 21). This quote illustrates the difficult relationship Amir and his father have with each other because Baba wants to mold him into the perfect son, but Amir does not find appreciation in the same things as Baba, causing this mold to be ruined. Amir and Baba being polar opposites causes them to naturally separate from each other because Baba likes building luxury to fit his ego, but Amir values the smaller gestures people do in life. Once Amir finally does something that makes Baba proud and improves their ego, Baba starts to appreciate Amir more and tries to do more things with him. This is depicted when Hosseini writes, Baba and I were finally friends (Hosseini 85). Although Amir thinks they are close, they are not as close as they could be because Baba usually invites friends and family to join them on their outings. Also, when they are alone it is very awkward for the two of them because they do not know each other very well. The reason Amir feels like he is gaining his father s acceptance is because he is taking him places, rather than ignoring his existence completely, which is a significant step compared to their relationship before. This step in their relationship illustrates they have a chance at becoming even closer in the future. The father and son relationship truly transforms when they move to the United States and both find appreciation in the other s differences because they only have each other. When they move it is very difficult for Baba to assimilate to life in America, causing him to get very frustrated. He starts to rely more on Amir for help and as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Prince Qualities The Qualities of the Prince, written by Niccolo Machiavelli, is one of his most celebrated works (Prince 219). Machiavelli s work includes two contrasting forces called luck and character. When Machiavelli mentions luck, he means one s fortune, chance, or fate. Machiavelli also includes character; one s virtues or life values. Machiavelli writes about how a Prince should be. Many princes are considered extremely virtuous or extremely cruel: one cruel, another merciful; one treacherous, another faithful; one effeminate and cowardly, another bold and courageous; one humane, another haughty; one lascivious, another chaste; one trustworthy, another cunning; one harsh, another lenient; one serious, another frivolous; one religious, another unbelieving; and the like? (Prince 224) Should a prince be nice and caring or evil and cruel? This question is what Machiavelli answers through his writing. Machiavelli believes that a prince should know everything there is about war and needs to be prepared for an attack at any given time, even if a nation is in a time of peace. Exile, the reality and practice of being barred from a native country, has prolifically influenced many philosophers theoretical writings. Indeed, Julia Kristeva being in exile from her native Bulgaria is a foreigner in an unascertained land. Being an outcast influence s her philosophical, political and sociological extended essay Strangers to Ourselves published in 1991. The book addresses a problem that Kristeva has experienced first hand: the struggle of being a foreigner in Western culture and the difficulties that people and nations have with treating foreigners residing in their motherland. Jealousy drives our nationalist temperaments and Kristeva explores the figure of the unconscious foreigner in all of us. Strangers to Ourselves draws on the difficulty that natives have in accepting the stranger within and if we can come to terms with this notion. The exile is often a foreigner in an unfamiliar place or a foreigner repressed within the native s unconscious, however a feeling of strangeness can also occur through an exclusion from the hegemonic rationalism of modern society (Lechte: 79). The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The pitchfork s slender prongs and the green stripes on the man s shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood boards that make up the house and the barn, keep the viewer s eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood s use of verticality in this painting is overwhelming. There is also a striking luminosity to the painting. The man and the woman s faces appear to slightly glow, as if you can really see the reflection of the sun beaming off of their skin. This was achieved by a complex method of applying glazes. Wood would apply a layer of oil paint, allow it to dry, and then varnish it. This tedious process would be repeated numerous times. It was a process perfected by the 16th century Venetian painter, Titian. The series of glazes seems to have created an overwhelming sense of depth and radiance within the paint. By the time the pass was secured, only nine of Marion s men were left. Grant s column proceeded through the pass and engaged the Cherokees for several hours, until the Indians fled. Marion s capture of the pass allowed Grant to create a path of destruction in the Cherokee lands, burning 15 Indian towns and destroying their corn crops. Finally, Chief Attakullakulla, known by some as Little Carpenter, surrendered. Marion s courageous efforts in the Cherokee War did not go unnoticed. When he returned to his old lifestyle by leasing farm lands along the west bank of the Santee River, he was accorded great respect and became a successful planter. Although he spent considerable time hunting and fishing, he was well acquainted with details of the surrounding lands. He also had an active social life and regularly visited his brothers and neighboring Huguenot families. During this prosperous time, he attained a sizable degree of wealth. In 1773,

Even though Turkey as a sovereign nation is fairly young, it s cultural roots can be dated as far back as Alexander the Great. The Turkic people have an extremely long history and a very diverse culture. Long before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the area had seen its fair share of war and strife. Since the Hellenization of the Anatolian Peninsula by Alexander the Great, the area has seen a constant power struggle for an area that was known as the Crossroads of the World (modern day Istanbul). Since Istanbul was once the main trading hub of the known world, it s one of the most contributing factors for the countries rich and diverse culture. It is important to understand the differences between cultures so that we may better understand our similarities. When met with other cultures it is possible to be offensive without knowing it. Being that Turkey has many cultures that differ vastly, it could be quite easy for an unknowledgeable tourist to be offensive. Taking the time to do research before traveling to new areas might allow a person to save face, and avoid offense or embarrassment when visiting foreign places. However, Scott was having difficulty to do so, as he s too weak and weary, he seems to have suffered from frostbites in his hand but he continues to write, speaking his words out loud. At the same time Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer also enters the stage, introducing Scott to the members of the Royal Society, who gathered together in honored of him. Amundsen introduction of Scott was the first hint to the audiences that Scott was already dead, and his story is told through the journal and letters that were later found. Captain Scott s exploration began with the scene of his four men s Oates, Bowers, Wilson, and Evans crossing the Antarctic on foot, dragging along a one thousand pound sled with them. While their competitor, Amundsen was much faster in the race by using sled dogs, later slaughtering them when they re no longer in good used. Scott refuses the aid of dogs, as he perceives it to be barbaric. Each of Scott s men has a different personality, bringing life to the play. Oates is a hardened soldier, while Bowers keeps the men on their feet with his optimism, Wilson plays important roles, as he s the doctor and Evans is the largest and strongest of the five men. • 31. The Battle Of The Second Punic War Carthage and the Roman Republic fought the second Punic War for control of the lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea, considered the entire civilized world at the time. The battles of the second Punic War show Hannibal Barca to be not only the greatest military leader of his age, but perhaps one of the greatest generals of all time. By examining one of Hannibal s most spectacular victories, the paradigm for a battle of annihilation, military professionals can learn how the Roman commanders might have defeated Carthage s General. In conducting an analysis of the Battle of Cannae, I will postulate an alternate outcome by introducing intelligence utilization that would have turned this battle into a victory for Rome. Battle Analysis Definition of the Subject From audacious gambits to canny tactics, leaders scrutinize Hannibal s legacy of strategy even now, almost 2200 years after his death. Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote (1948) that, every ground commander seeks the battle of annihilation; so far as conditions permit, he tries to duplicate in modern war the classic example of Cannae. (p. 325) The Battle of Cannae is eponymous for the village of the same name, part of Apulia in a region of southern Italy. The generals for the Roman forces were the consuls Gaius Terentius Varro and Lucius Aemilius Paullus, while Hannibal and his brother Mago Barcid led the armies of Carthage. • 32. Bilingualism What does it mean to be bilingual? Is it as simple as having the ability to speak two languages? Or does it have a deeper meaning? Martin Espada and Richard Rodriguez have opposite views on the concept of bilingualism. Espada feels Latinos have the right to speak Spanish anywhere, considering language is intertwined with identity. Conversely, Rodriguez believes that to truly understand a language, you must forget the language that is already known to feel accepted in society. These ideas, similar to mine are not as simple as speaking two languages. To me the idea of bilingualism is respecting the two languages that are spoken by having the courage to speak them anywhere, at anytime. According to Martin Espada the idea of bilingualism is way deeper than just speaking two languages. Being bilingual to Espada means that both the languages spoken are intertwined with identity. This claim is constructed in his essay The New Bathroom Policy at English High School. He informs us of what he has learned about bilingual people in America: I have never met a single person who didn t want to learn English. What they want to do is retain their language, culture and identity (Espada 164 167). English is a powerful language in America, the Latinos that reside there feel that learning English could jeopardize their ability to speak Spanish. I have always loved video games ever since I was introduced to the Nintendo 64 when I was a little girl. I found Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong very addicting when I began playing it. However, a new level of game addiction has been introduced into the era of technology. Games on our phones have been a new popularity in recent years. Usually when I hear the words video game, I think of a console, like the Wii or PlayStation. I don t consider games that are on the app store like Flappy Bird or Temple Run a legitimate video game. Angry Birds was an activity that took time away from other things that needed to be done and was less and activity in [my] day than a blank space in [my] day, (Anderson 66). Anderson argues that a phone like the iPhone became a legitimate game console because of all the games available from the app store (Anderson 67). However, the downside to a phone being a game console is that, it responds not to the fast twitch button combos... but to more intuitive and intimate motion: poking, pinching, tapping, tickling, (Anderson 67). A shooter game would not seem to work on a phone, which does not make it a game console in my opinion. This type of game attracts the type of person who is not a high level gamer and would like a game that does not cost a lot of money and strategy to play. Violent Video Games On Children Gabriel Silva Janet Myszkowski English 1101 06 November 2017 The Effects of Violent Video Games on Young Children Violence in video games is among one of the most controversial and discussed topics up to this day. Many believe that the violence in said video game is an exact consequence of a child s behavior. There has been proof that violence seen in young children has increased in the United States over the years, however, this could be due to a multitude of other factors. Research and a meta analysis find positive linkages between children s and young adults violent video game play and aggressive cognitions, aggressive affect, aggressive behaviors, and desensitization to violence. Due to the rising levels of aggression, it leads children to believe that violence is the way to deal with issues. The time children spend on these new media is ten times as much as the time they spend on, for instance, reading for pleasure. The violent nature of the television programs and video games to which children are exposed is of specific concern (Polman et al. 256). The result is that limitations and barriers are placed to tone down accessibility to these games, the limitations being the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating system. Due to the loss of constant communion in the fall, God set forth multiple promises to eventually establish his eternal Kingdom, the New Testament, is the culmination of these promises. The Gospels are the most specific in how Jesus Christ fulfilled the covenants God made with Abraham and David. More importantly he is the fulfillment of the new covenant, which washes away sin and brings humanity back into communion with God. What is modeled in the Gospels is reaffirmed in Acts, by the way the church is to function according to the culmination of the Covenants. Acts begins to reveal the great mystery that is the inclusion of the Gentiles in God s covenant. Paul s Epistles take the culmination a step further and defend the idea that the fulfillment of God s covenants does not just affect the people of Israel, but the Gentiles as well. The General epistles teach that the people are no longer bound by the mosaic covenant since the New Covenant was fulfilled via Jesus Christ. Yet practice of the law is still an important factor of the Christian life style even if superseded by the New Covenant. Revelation shows that covenants are leading up to the lord s victory and salvation of his people. The sins of the Jews and Gentiles are washed away by Jesus the blood of the lamb so in reality the battle is already won because of the New Covenants fulfillment in Jesus. It is clear from ... Cuerda does this by exhibiting the contrast between the 1931 1936 Republic and the dictatorships that ruled the country just before and after the Spanish Civil War through the relationship between Moncho, a young boy, and Don Gregorio, his teacher. The film depicts the Republic s aims for a liberal education and the pressures this produced within the more conservative region of society. Overall this film portrays both the freedom of this short period in Spain s history and the beginning of Franco s oppressive dictatorship. There are many layers of themes that are subtlety imbedded into the film. The political theme of the film is a truly intriguing portrayal of life in Spain during this tense time. The underlying message of the film is one of defending the freedom of expression. It explores the importance of gaining knowledge through one s own personal experiences. Culture is used as a pathway to achieve personal freedom. In addition, the film attempts to break some of the taboos surrounding an adequate education, focusing instead on this education through experience. Observation is used as a way to awaken the senses. Bilinguals are people who can speak at least two languages. There are a lot of debating on whether monolinguals have better memory or bilinguals. I really grew attached to a team called the Washington Redskins. A lot of my sundays were spent in front of the television gazing as the Redskins put in work. On September 24th my dad came home with pale papers in his rugged hand. He placed the papers in my grip which were tickets to go see the Redskins play the Chiefs in Kansas City on October 2nd. First off, the excitement I felt rush throughout my body was nothing i ve ever felt in the time that i ve spent on this Earth. It was hard to believe that I was actually going to see the team I watched growing up. One of the best parts about it was going to the loudest stadium in the United States. I knew going into the game that the Kansas City Chiefs were no joke, because they were undefeated on the season at that point. Secondly, I woke up on the second of October smelling victory, which also smelt like pancakes. I tasted a golden sticky syrup on my puffy pancakes. I had glorious pieces of bacon that tasted like god made them himself. I made sure to get enough food to last me the lengthy excruciating car ride. Next, it was time for a quick shower so I didn t smell funky. It was probably one of the quickest showers I have ever taken due to being ready to get on the road for the game. Please don t take points off for this but, I am always curious if teachers read ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
