Disadvantages Of Plastic Vs Plastic
In modern times, there are numerous materials used to make the everyday necessities we need in life
such as our phones, clothes, shoes, plastic bags, and many more. However we could narrow the
materials down to metal based products, polymer based products/ plastics, and cellulose based
products/paper. To narrow things even down further so that we could have an argument, plastic and
cellulose could both be used to make the same type of material such as containers for juice, containers
for food, chairs, tables and many more. With this, we could now compare if plastic or paper is the
better material to make our basic necessities. I would say that plastic would be better because of its
durability, energy efficiency in making plastics, and the ability to mold plastic.
First of all, plastic materials are more durable because of their physical property. The perfect example
for this would be the paper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People would say that plastic in landfills would just stay there and if we keep on using plastic the
waste problem would just worsen. I think that the problem here is why do people put plastics in
landfills mixed with biodegradable materials. There are ways to properly recycle plastic. This comes
to my third argument for why plastic beats paper. It is better because we could change its physical
shape to things we really need. Richard Stein, from the University of Massachusetts, stated that
plastics could be melted and formed into different structures such as propellers for wind turbines, food
containers and many more [3]. Imagine being able to reuse plastic as long as the quality of it can still
be recyclable, but if it isn t anymore, Richard Stein also suggested that plastic could be converted to
energy by burning it since it is made of petroleum [3].
To conclude, plastic is better than paper because it saves energy in production, is durable, can be
recycled, and can be transformed into energy. I rest my

Madeleine Leininger s Cultural Care Diversity Theory
Nursing theory provides the basis, or framework, of the nursing profession and helps to identify the
unique qualities of the profession. Without theory to explain the focus of the nursing profession, the
profession may lose direction and its understanding of new knowledge to build upon the discipline
(CCN, 2014). Theories must be applied in various settings such as bedside nursing, lead nurse
management, and executive management. One of the issues that our local healthcare system has been
dealing with is an increase in culturally diverse patients. There has been a recent surge in Sudanese
and Hispanic populations seeking healthcare. The direct care staff treating these patients need to have
resources available to provided culturally competent care. This includes things such as translators,
translating devices such as the blue telephone , and culturally appropriate spiritual care.
The theory chosen for analysis in this paper is Madeleine Leininger s Cultural Care Diversity Theory.
Leinenger s theory looks at individual patients with relation to their cultural heritage. The pieces of
her theory include culture, culture care, and culture care similarities and differences pertaining to
transcultural human care (CCN, 2014). This middle range theory has the potential to influence nurses
to provide culturally competent care to patients such as Hispanics. The writer of this paper has
unintentionally used Leinenger s theory in practice while caring for patients. There

Cost of Capital at Ameritrade
Case Study of Cost of Capital at Ameritrade 1 a How can the CAPM be used to estimate the cost of
capital for a real business investment decision? CAPM results can be compared to the best expected
rate of return that investor can possibly earn in other investments with similar risks, which is the cost
of capital. Under the CAPM, the market portfolio is a well diversified, efficient portfolio representing
the non diversifiable risk in the economy. Therefore, investments have similar risk if they have the
same sensitivity to market risk, as measured by their beta with the market portfolio. So, the cost of
capital of any investment opportunity equals the expected return of available investments with the
same beta. This estimate is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then we noticed that in exhibit 4, the period of historical data is from 1992 1996. However , the stock
of Waterhouse Investor Srvcs only last to Sep 1996, in order to compare the data in the same time
horizon, we select the period of 5 years, started from Sep 1991 to Sep 1996. We use ri=(Pt Pt 1+Dt)/Pt
1 to calculate the monthly return rate of stocks. When the stock split, ri= (x/y*Pt Pt 1+x/y*Dt)/Pt 1 We
chose VW portfolio of NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ rather than EW of NYSE, AMEX, and
NASDAQ because the value weight portfolio can reflect the real market situation better. We use the
equation ri=(Pt Pt 1+Dt)/Pt 1 to calculate the monthly return of stock of Charles Schwab Corp, Quick
amp; Reilly Group and Waterhouse Investor Srvcs. Then we have two methods to calculate the Beta of
Equity for each company. The first method is using equation COV(Ri,Rm)/Var(Rm) to get the Beta.
Then we use BAsset=E/(E+D)*BE+D/(E+D)*BD to calculate the Beta of Asset. We assume that the
debt of these companies is risk free, because debt represents only a small fraction of the firm s value.
Here are the answers: | COV (Ri,Rm) | Var Rm | Beta | D/V | E/V | Asset Beta | Charles Schwab |

Child Custody Interests
Child custody arrangements have evolved over the years from a time when children were once seen as
property of the father. This began to change as society became more focused on the development of
children, understanding the formative years of childhood evolved into adulthood. Mothers have
historically been granted custody in the majority of custody cases as determined in nineteenth century
by the tender year s doctrine. Once the tender years doctrine had been determined to be in violation of
the fourteenth amendment the primary caretaker rule was developed based on who was the primary
caretaker prior to the divorce. With the increase in divorce rates and the legislation of Uniform
Marriage and Divorce Act of 1976 set the standard for the Best Interests of the Child. The best interest
of the child concept moved away from parental rights, focusing on several factors such as
relationships between parent and child, school and home adjustments, mental and physical wellbeing
of parents, and wishes of both parents. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was during this time that men began looking for work outside of the local area of farms, leaving
women behind to manage the house. This brought about a change due to the roles men took as wage
earners and women became the nurturer. Despite some vagueness of the Best Interests of the Child
concept, it has been beneficial in respecting parents rights who may have be living in nontraditional
parenting arrangements, are homosexual or have severe physical disabilities. Societal changes
influenced legal custodial arrangements to increase greater contact between fathers and their children
to decrease the negative psychological effects of divorce, such as feeling abandoned due to inadequate

Health Emergency Of International Concern Essay
The earth as a whole is pretty stable; lives on earth remain relatively safe, growing and increasing in
population every day. Diseases and sickness comes to play now and then, but, for the most part, affect
the poor and undeveloped countries most heavy; developed countries like the U.S.A. have solutions
and vaccine for diseases and thus fear of sickness do not arise often. However, when they do, it is can
become a pandemic, a massive widespread of hazardous disease that potentially threatens the human
population. To prevent epidemics, countries formed the World Health Organization (WHO) to create
the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) to help announce an event of an
extreme health hazard that spread (or is spreading) internationally and need international coalition to
cure or resolve. There are multiple phrases to pandemic before the PHEIC happens. To explore the
phases of a pandemic and when a PHEIC occur, I carried out simulation through a game called
Pandemic II to evaluate the phases and the reaction of the world and WHO. Before talking about the
simulation, there needs to be an understanding of the phases of a pandemic: Interpandemic phase,
Alert phases, Pandemic phase, Transition phase. Each phase carries a special role in how the world
react to solve a pandemic. The Interpandemic phase is more of a cautionary phase; nothing is
happening during this phase and life goes on normally. However, countries should be on the lookout
of potential arising

Cisco Systems
| Case Analysis CISCO Systems | | | | | | 1. How have Cisco s channels evolved in the last 10 15 years?
Why have they evolved that way? What does the future look like? Cisco is the leader in the switches
and router market. Cisco was described as a classic start up fairy tale. Indirect sales and distribution
through resellers was responsible for the small percentage of products delivered in the early 1990s.
Cisco model was praised as a successful indirect sales and channel strategy. In 1995, Chambers (CEO)
took the helm and the company played a leading role in the internet revolution. Market capitalization
exceeded $500 billion in 2000. Cisco s sales had crossed $18 billion and it boasted relationship with ...

Through voice VARs? Data VARs? or both? I would recommend the distribution of VoIP products
through both voice and data VARs. Even though voice channel was considerably more consolidated
than the data channel however it is agreed that voice needed to be added to the mix of already existing
data VARs. In the data market, margins for the resellers where in the region 12%to 20% due to the
channel competition. On one hand, it makes sense to stay with existing margin structure because the
new technology delivered huge cost advantage for the end user. But the Voice VARs were entrenched
with PBX firms and it would cannibalize introducing new product line. The maturing nature of the
networking market and opportunity provided Cisco to expand their business and needed to the keep
the productivity with the existing data VARs. 4. What are your reactions to the Pyramid model
advanced in Fig.C of the case? What is the core concept of the model? Is there an alternative
evolutional model that Cisco should adop? It was a completely different strategy adopted by Cisco
when healthy profit margins on routers and switches were the norm in 1990s. This offered value
addition to the resellers and sales volume was the key which showed Cisco s intention to improve the
market share. Gold , Silver or Premier status was awarded to the certified resellers who would in turn

Technology In Flowers For Algernon
Humans have created technology to benefit our lives. Technology helps our lives by accomplishing
tasks that are difficult without it. Occasionally, devices make problems for us. In Flowers for Algernon
Charlie had an operation to become smart but only temporarily. He learned the truth of certain parts of
his life which gave him pained him more than helping him. In The Veldt technology was misused and
killed the parents of the Hadley family. The Sea Devil had difficulties when the man caught the wrong
fish. His net becomes an issue because the fish pulls him into the lake nearly drowning him while
being attached to his hand. In the story by Stuart Mclean, Dave is unable to send Christmas cards to
friends as a result of being incapable of taking the letters out of a mail box.
Flowers for Algernon has a difficulty with technology when Charlie s brain begins to deteriorate.
Scientist Dr. Nemur and neurologist/psychiatrist Dr. Strauss did an operation on Charlie to higher his
I.Q. At first, the surgery seemed to be a huge success making Charlie even more intelligent than
themselves. Later in the novel, Charlie realizes his intelligence deteriorates and names it the Algernon
Gordon Effect . The operation did successfully able him to learn at an extreme rate although, the more
he learned, the faster his new intelligence would disappear. The technology made Charlie smart for
only a limited amount of time, this becomes burden on him. Charlie realized how his colleagues truly

Francis Galton Eugenics
Eugenics involves applying principles of genetics and heredity for the purpose of improving the
human race. The term eugenics was first invented by Francis Galton in the late 1800 s. Francis Galton
was an English intellectual whose body of work spanned many fields, including statistics, psychology,
meteorology and genetics (Shultz 114 116). Francis Galton was also a half cousin of Charles Darwin.
Francis Galton s first academic foray into eugenics analyzed the characteristics, such as superior
intelligence, of England s upper classes and concluded they were hereditary; therefore, desirable traits
could be passed down through generations (Shultz 116). Francis Galton elaborates on his idea that
although a person can improve his or her state, genes place limits on how far one can go and he uses
examples of physical prowess as an analogy to intelligence. Francis Galton s first ... Show more

Unfortunately, mental testing was also used to enhance unethical social programs. Ellis Island was a
place to hold immigrants that were being allowed to enter the country. These immigrants were being
psychologically analyzed, despite their unfamiliarity with American culture and the English language.
At least 80% of the immigrants coming to Ellis Island tested as mentally challenged also known as
feeble minded . The results of the individuals tested at Ellis Island were later used to create restrictive
immigration laws. Adolf Hitler proudly admitted to following the laws of several American states that
allowed for the prevention of reproduction of the unfit. The United States eugenics movement began
to lose power in the 1940s and was completely discredited following the horrors of Nazi Germany.
With modern advances in genetic testing, it is important to keep America s eugenics history in mind.
The Zeitgeist is the dominant set of ideals and beliefs and their work on behavioral psychology was

Manderly as an Appropriate Setting for a Gothic Novel
Manderly as an Appropriate Setting for a Gothic Novel A Gothic novel is characterized by picturesque
settings, an atmosphere of mystery and terror, and element of violence and the supernatural.
In Chapter 7, Manderly is being described and introduced.
On page 73, A thing of grace and beauty, exquisite and faultless, lovelier even than I had ever
dreamed, built in its hollow of smooth grassland and mossy lawns , Manderly is said to be very
beautiful, like a postcard image on the surface. There are symmetrical walls and terraces overlooking
lawns that slope to the sea. Also, there are swallows, bluebells, ... Show more content on

On page 3, a lilac had mated with a copper beech…malevolent ivy, always an enemy to grace, had
thrown her tendrils about the pair and made them prisoners
shows the presence of violence. These plants add to the atmosphere of gloominess and death, which
made an appropriate setting for a Gothic novel.
Moreover, Manderly appears differently after the cloud covers the moon.
(p.4) The house was a sepulcher, our fear and suffering lay buried in the ruins.
The house would then become an isolated tomb that will never be inhabited by anyone again. This
hinted a much more significant meaning under its surface beauty, which contributes to the setting of a
Gothic novel.
In addition, the library in Manderly is like a church (p.76) a room for peace, a room for meditation ,
with an ancient mossy smell, scrolled ceiling, dark panelling and heavy curtains, also giving a sense of
sacredness. (p.100) I must have lost my bearings What s more, Manderly is similar to a castle or a
maze, with many rooms and corridors, that the heroine couldn t make her way on the first day of her
arrival to Manderly. There are different verbs describing the movement to places, for example, went
up , went along , turned left , etc.. This gave a sense of mystery.
By this, the above images made Manderly an appropriate setting for a Gothic novel in spite of its
surface beauty.

How Does Tim O Brien Use Of Conceit
The Use of Conceit In The Things They Carried, conceit is used by taking two totally unrelated ideas
or symbols and making them relate to each other. Throughout the entirety of this novel, conceit is a
way for the readers to come to appreciate each character and story in a new light. The chapters, In the
Field, and The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong, use this literary device to truly paint a better picture
of the over all feeling of the book. These extended metaphors help the audience feel what the author,
Tim O Brien, was feeling as he lived and wrote about his experiences. The use of conceit in the
chapters, In the Field and The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong connects the themes of loss and
recovery to the audience, thus giving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conceit is shown through Mary Anne s character and mindset. She could be compared to all the
soldiers in Vietnam, especially since she becomes a shell of her former self and joins the foreign
world. She was different than the other soldiers, considering that the violent atmosphere of Vietnam
didn t affect her. She seemed comfortable and entirely at home; the hostile environment didn t seem to
register. (92) Mary Anne was comfortable in the country, and the fact that a war was going on did not
affect her in the slightest way. However, this quote foreshadows what happens to her, seeing as many
soldiers would be unnerved at Vietnam, yet Mary Anne, on the other hand, accepts her surroundings.
There was no emotion in her stare, no sense of the person behind it (105). As a result of her
acceptance, Rat comments on her having ...a necklace of human tongues (105). The end result of Mary
Anne s transformation is finally shown here. It ties back to Tim O brien s belief that the solders had,
...no sense of the person behind [their stare]. Mary Anne lost who she was, and became a typical
soldier like everyone else in the

A quantitative survey consisting of eight main sections and demographic information was given to
international students at a Western United States land grant university. The survey s eight sections
assessed students level of agreement in the eight following categories: personal life, cultural concerns,
academics, university programs, health care, safety, and the International Students and Scholars Office
(ISS). The questions were evaluated on a standard 5 point Likert type scale. In addition, open ended
responses were elicited for country of origin and religious beliefs to ensure possibly answers were not
omitted by the research team. Questions were divided into the eight categories to make the survey
process easier for respondents while also preserving internal validity of the questionnaire. The survey
was sent via email through the ISS office to the entire international student population of 862 students.

Powder Movie Analysis
There s a small film, Powder, that in my opinion, didn t receive the acclaim it rightly deserves.
Directed by Victor Salva, it is carried by an ensemble cast of A List character actors, Mary
Steenburgen, Lance Henrickson, Jeff Goldbulm, with Sean Patrick Flannery playing the title role.
There are few movies with the ability to crawl inside you, and grip your heart like this one. This
movie speaks to me on many personal levels, I hardly know where to begin and almost didn t. It s
easy, with my abandonment and bullying issues, to assume its attraction for me. I admit these are a
factor, but it s not the whole. This film unabashedly delves into the mystical, and Pantheistic belief

Frattached Ear Lobe Experiments
Introduction/Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the allele frequency of attached
versus detached ear lobes in our society and distinguish if there is a recognizable difference between
the two. This is a trait based on a single gene and is easily studied. Attached ear lobes connect directly
to the side of the head, while detached ear lobes hang down below the point of attachment. One
objective is to determine which earlobe is more dominant for our population.
Hypothesis:
If a large enough population is studied and all detached and attached ear lobes are counted, I conclude
the study will indicate both types of ear lobes will be relatively equal.
Methods:
I chose the Town Center Mall as a place for my study, having considered a mall was a great place to
reach a large segment of the population. There was a diverse population for both age and race as well
as an adequate number of males and females. I randomly determined the ear lobe type of the first fifty
people I came in contact with and noted this as my dependent variable. In order to ... Show more

The dominant allele was the unattached ear lobe with the attached being the recessive allele. The
Hardy Weinberg equation was used to find the frequencies of the dominant and recessive alleles. After
noting and calculating the results of the first fifty people at the mall, I tested a second experiment,
deducing that attached ear lobes seemed to be more prevalent in younger females. My new hypothesis
was females under age thirty had a higher frequency of attached ear lobes, so I then observed the next
fifty females that appeared under the age of thirty and recorded the results. The Hardy Weinberg
formula was again used in the calculations.
Results:
Several studies have Number of Detached Number of Attached

The Emancipation Proclamation By President Abraham Lincoln
After the Civil War the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 by President Abraham
Lincoln. The first paragraph of the Emancipation Proclamation states, That on the first day of January,
in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty three, all persons held as slaves within
any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United
States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United
States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of
such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they
may make for their actual freedom. These words to the African Americans were their saving grace.
This first section of the Emancipation Proclamation promises the freedom of African Americans
through the protection of the American Government and the United States military. This was the first
time this had been promised to African Americans because during the time of slavery all the protection
that they had was from their master, so the promise of protection from the American Government was
a step forward that many African Americans did not think that they would ever achieve.
Along with the Emancipation Proclamation came three Constitutional amendments. The very first
amendment added to the Constitution was the thirteenth amendment, and to fully understand the

High Glycemic Index Diet Associations With Depression
In this review, we highlight the recent findings on high glycemic index diet associations with
depression. We focus on GI, GL, high calorie diet and BMI and describe biological and behavioral
mechanisms in relation to GI Depression
Introduction:
The consumption of sweetened beverages, refined foods, and pastries has been shown to be associated
with an increased risk of depression in longitudinal studies. However, any influence that refined
carbohydrates has on mood could be commensurate with their proportion in the overall diet; studies
are therefore needed that measure overall intakes of carbohydrate and sugar, glycemic index (GI), and
glycemic load.
The glycemic index or glycaemic index (GI) is a number associated with a particular type ... Show

The glycemic load (GL) of food is a number that estimates how much the food will raise a person s
blood glucose level after eating it. One unit of glycemic load approximates the effect of consuming
one gram of glucose. Glycemic load accounts for how much carbohydrate is in the food and how
much each gram of carbohydrate in the food raises blood glucose levels. Glycemic load is based on
the glycemic index (GI), and is calculated by multiplying the grams of available carbohydrate in the
food times the food s GI and then dividing by 100.
Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person s thoughts,
behavior, feelings and sense of well being. People with depressed mood can feel sad, anxious, empty,
hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, ashamed or restless. They may lose interest in activities
that were once pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating,
remembering details or making decisions, and may contemplate, attempt or commit suicide. Insomnia,
excessive sleeping, fatigue, aches, pains, digestive problems or reduced energy may also be present.
Depressed mood is a feature of some psychiatric syndromes such as major depressive disorder, but it
may also be a normal reaction to life events such as grief, a symptom of some bodily ailments or a
side effect of some drugs and medical treatments.

Snow Day Research Paper
It s a cold, wintry day when the first flake falls. Everyone gets excited, but a lot of people don t know
much information about the fragile flakes that fall from the wintry sky. That information includes:
how the snowflakes form, their appearance, and the conditions of it snowing.
Before all else, most people may not know how the frozen flakes are formed. According to, Snow
Day! By Tabitha Walker, the process flakes of how the icy flakes are formed all starts when water
evaporates from the Earth and rises into the atmosphere. As the water reaches a certain level of the
atmosphere that is 32° Fahrenheit, it freezes. These tiny droplets of frozen water are called ice
crystals. These ice crystals then form around a dust or dirt particles. Some of the larger snowflakes can
have up to 200 ice crystals. These few steps are what form the beautiful snowflakes that fall from the
sky on a harsh winter day.
Additionally, many people don t know what the snowflakes look like. Although they may all look
white as they fall from the sky, but if you look at them through a microscope, each and every one of
them have a rare and unique shape and design. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, located in the Gulf of Mexico exploded killing 11
workers and injuring 17. The oil rig sank a day and a half later. The spill was referred to as the
Deepwater Horizon oil spill, BP oil spill, Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and BP oil disaster. It was first said
that little oil had actually leaked into the ocean but a little over a month later the estimate was 12,000
19,000 barrels of crude oil being leaked per day. Many attempts were made to stop the leak but all

How Is Iago Revengeful
Othello was written in 1603 and is one of many tragedies that Shakespeare wrote. It is set in Venice
and is about the downfall of a noble Venetian general, Othello, due to grudges harboured by his
second lieutenant, Iago. Iago is revengeful, for a number of reasons, the most prominent is the fact he
is angry at Othello and Michael Cassio (the man who Othello promoted), jealous of Othello and
Desdemona (Othello s wife) for their happy relationship and racist against Othello as he is a black
man in a white man s world . It is this racial prejudice and the jealousy Iago keeps against him, that
ultimately leads to the breakdown of Othello which results in the murder of his wife Desdemona.

An Egg Is A Terrible Thing To Waste Essay
This is your Brain on Drugs was a public service announcement created in 1987 by the Partnership for
a Drug Free America foundation. The ad was later re imaged in 1998 under the same title, and much
of the same premise. The arguments of both advertisements were the caustic effects of drugs on your
brain. The PFDA formed in the mid eighties with the simple idea of using ads to advocate the dangers
of drugs use. They believed the persuasive nature of advertisements could denounce a product as
effectively as they could promote them. Their first real success came with the original This is your

Nevertheless, one can sense the adverts lack of answers, as if there has been some omitted scene of
earnestly raised hands all begging, Yes, actually I do have a few questions. Namely, the claim
someone s brain would be irreparably damaged because they snort heroin once. As an example, it only
takes a single blow to destroy the egg, and there s no mention of contiguous snorting to implicate
prolonged use. The imagery used attempts to warrant that if you snort heroin you will destroy your
mind and body. The term for this type of circular reasoning is known as begging the question. Andrea
Lunsford and John Ruszkiewicz showcase the fallacy s central error as being made on grounds that
cannot be accepted as true because those grounds are in doubt (529). For instance, if simply snorting
drugs led to unequivocal brain damage there would be less addicts, and higher fatality rates from drug
use. Although the dangers of prolonged drug use are well known, this precise analogy only works if
one accepts that the human mind and body are tantamount to the fragility of an ordinary egg. The
image of the fragile egg plays well into the second fallacy: the often used scare tactic known as the
slippery slope. Lundsford and Ruszkiewicz describe this argument as one that portrays today s tiny
misstep as tomorrow s slide

Analysis Of Clip Analysis Un Chen Andalou
Clip Analysis
This clip is from the 1929 movie, Un Chien Andalou. This film uses two specific formal choices that
illustrate it s surrealism, including discontinuity editing and close ups. Discontinuity editing in this
film went against Hollywood s continuity rules of seamlessly blending scenes together that not only
made narrative sense, but visual sense as well. However in Un Chien Andalou, these rules are broken
by obscure, random images that don t seem to fit together and lack any narrative sense. In the clip, we
see a scene of a man staring at his hand where ants are crawling out of a hole, then we see an image of
a person s underarm hair that soon transitions into a picture of a sea urchin. These series of images
don t make much sense when put together, yet they illustrate the surreality of the mind and how our
thought patterns often lack any significance. The swarming of the ants in the hand is an example of
lack of pattern because it symbolizes the fragmented or swarming images of our mind. These scenes
are not only non linear, but they are also discontinuous and show that our reality is constantly
evolving; we walk away with a different interpretation of the movie each time. Another formal choice
that Un Chien Andalou uses is the close up, we see this used in the first few minutes of the clip when
the women s eye is cut. The use of the close up in this scene brings this grotesque act to the forefront,
where we cannot help but look away every time we see it.

A rich tradition from Socrates, Rousseau, Dewey, Piaget and onwards has emphasised the role of
teacher as promoter of questions and exchange within the context of a learning relationship.... Student,
staff, and learner engagement is promoted not by traditional leader characteristics (rational, analytic,
dispassionate) but rather by leaders with emotional intelligence, a coaching orientation, authenticity
and humility.... Making such a personal connection can simply involve talking to students on a more
informal level and engaging with them as people rather than exclusively as students. It also involves
raising our awareness and developing some understanding about the lives of students. Students often
lead complex lives and staff need to understand that wider context: perhaps adjusting to living on their

The term MSE can be used broadly to encompass any environmental intervention that promotes

Ethical Values From The Book The Dispossessed Written By...
What is ethics? It is a code of conduct that a human being lives by. Being ethical makes life a bit
easier and simpler because of the boundaries and code of conduct we set for our selves. Many authors
implement their own ethical values into their stories, which sometimes give the reader an insight into
the kind of person the author is. Making references to an article by Daniel P Jaeckle, I will be
analyzing the three ethical values from the book The Dispossessed written by Ursula K. LeGuin, that
have been layered together in a way that it creates interpersonal ethics, ethics of mutual aid, ethics of
shared pain, and ethics of the bond, designed to meet the needs of an anarchist society. Anarchism is a
philosophy based on voluntary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only weakness. (Ch. 7) In his article, Jaeckle hints that LeGuin borrowed this ethical value from the
work of a Russian anarchist Peter Kropotkin. It can be said that Shevek increases the variety of the
sociality to species way beyond human beings. He calls this so called species social species . The fact
that he does this is so important because it signifies that being social is not something that is
religiously necessary or related to someone s past. Being social or anti social can occur at any age
through out someone s life. From the above quote, Shevek s dialogue can be perceived as an
interpretation of Darwin s principle the survival of the fittest. Yes, it is somewhat true that people who
are social are the strongest and those who are anti social are weak, only because the social species
know how to get around people and the anti social ones are too afraid to speak to anyone else, hence
they sometimes get into trouble even if they didn t mean to. How does this relate to ethics? Well,
according to the quote above, a competitive society that focuses on domination rather than equality
will commit an unethical blunder. This blunder will lead to misunderstanding of the importance of the
forces that moves humanity and the other social species forward and to evolution. Where does mutual
aid come into play here? How is mutual aid connected to the social species? It is rather simple. Most
social species tend to live

Abolishment In Frankenstein
Despite how extravagantly different the creation scene is in Shelley s novel compared to what is
presented on screen, there is little to say on the subject. As already mentioned in the introduction, the
tradition of exuberant, showy creation scenes didn t begin with the original textit{Frankenstein}
(1931), but with the 1910 edition, where it lends half of its runtime to the conjuration of the monster.
Each iteration of Frankenstein thereafter copies this extravagant method of portraying the creation
scene, and as they do so, knowledge of Shelley s minimal description is lost. First, we must explore
why her version of events isn t inclusive of the embellishment and indulgence on screen.

In Shelley s text, the scene consists of a few ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet he acknowledges that this moment is not one to celebrate, and thus compensates for this using
other methods, turning the showy scene from a contradiction to a juxtaposition that emphasises the
monstrosity of not only the monster, but Victor s actions in creating it: First, the monster lunges from a
great copper sarcophagus filled with water to make it a kind of womb. After he lands sprawling in the
spill tank under it, Victor lifts him up, vainly tries to show him how to walk, then ties him standing to
a set of chains. But when the struggling creature is struck by a falling piece of wood and shortly goes
limp, Victor concludes that he himself has killed this luckless heir to massive birth defects. and that
this evil must be destroyed...forever. footcite{James Heffernan, Looking at the Monster: Frankenstein
and Film pp.143} This departure from the novel highlights Victor as a more paternal figure than the
text implies, making a point of the undercurrent of dread the scene should evoke, yet contrivedly
conveying Victor s repulsion at the creature in this scene, Victor is less repulsed by the creature, as
Shelley s text strongly emphasises, but more toward his own actions. It is only when Victor wakes up
to the sight of the lumbering creature in the next scene does he cry out No! . This decision creates a
confusing tone where it could initially be misconstrued by the audience that Branagh s Victor is
merely startled by the presence of a monster he had presumed dead, muddling up the message of
Victor s regret and of the repercussions of rebirth that Shelley intends on

Why People Commit Crimes And Explain How Judiciary...
When we were little children, an adult would ask you what you want to be when you grow up. Most

political. I would be fair. However, I would not make a very good political candidate. Even though

Because judiciary professionals face three main issues on a regular basis, the judge is responsible for
coming up with a decision. The prosecutor is responsible for having enough evidence to pursue a trial.
The prosecutor is the representative of the state and wields tremendous power (Wright, 2012). The
defense attorney is responsible for proving beyond a shadow and a doubt that the client is innocent.
The job of the defense attorney is, by any standard, difficult. It is difficult for a variety of reasons.
First, defendants often talk to the police without an attorney present. When they do this, they
themselves in crimes and to provide police with evidence that can later be used against them. Second,
defense attorneys often handle so many cases that it is simply impossible for them to understand the
details of each case. To manage the large number of criminal cases they are responsible for, defense
attorneys often have little choice but to spend only a few minutes with each defendant and to base
their legal recommendations on the information they receive from their clients and the prosecutor s
office. Third, most of the defendants in the criminal justice system are from the lower socioeconomic
classes. These defendants sometimes do not fully understand their legal rights, nor do they have

The Meltdown Of Nuclear Families In The 1900s
A nuclear family is a family composed of a married father and mother and their children. This type of
family became increasingly popular following the industrial age in the 1900s. The nuclear family soon
became the norm as people transferred from large kin groups to smaller independent families
(Pulsipher, 2015). This posed a problem in the beginning because close relatives no longer played a
role in raising children and no longer had anyone to look after them in old age as they did when kin
groups were common. However, as time went on, nuclear families faced challenges and soon began to

nuclear family, were a part of a single parent family. In fact, due to divorce, 43% of American children
spent at least part of their childhood in a single parent family in 1996 (Feder, 2001). Don Feder, author
on human events, explains that these shifts in attitude towards marriage and nuclear families has been
caused by changes in cultural influences such as media. In the early 1900s, marriage and family were
regarded as an integral part of existence, but as time went on the importance of nuclear families

Telecommunication Is The Electronic Transmission Of...
1. Introduction Telecommunications is the electronic transmission of signals used for communication
sent via means of telephone, radio, and television. The importance of telecommunication in business is
that it removes delays created by time and distance. With the proper setup it is possible for a company
to communicate with any business and affiliates quickly just about anywhere in the world. To fully
understand telecommunications it is important to understand the characteristics of telecommunication,
network types, and the medium used in telecommunications. 2. Abstract Basic telecommunication
characteristics are the medium that carries transmitted messages from point A to point B . There is the
simplex channel which is a communications channel that transmits data in one direction only, this
particular channel is not advantages for business due to its one way nature. There is the half duplex
channel which can move that data to multiple locations, however it cannot move them all at the same
time, in a company where speed is needed this may not be the best. Then there is the full duplex
channel which is similar to having two simplex channels, this one permits data to go both ways and

Trust Definition Essay
What is the meaning of trust? What does it take for a person to fully, unconditionally trust a person?
What can that person do, to change, for you to trust them? Merriam Webster s Dictionary defines Trust
as; the belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, etc. And I believe trust is
the number one key in healthy relationships. For others, especially in my story, I am still trying to
understand their warped definition of that fantastic word, trust.
My story originates from a few weeks ago, August 19th, 2015 to be exact. I am relaxing at home,
vigorously going through all of my new books for school, and making sure my book bag is neat and
orderly.
All of a sudden, the phone rings. On the other line, it is my good friend, my mentor, Police Officer
Steel. Good afternoon, Geneva, how are you? , she says. I am doing great Officer Steel, what may I
help you with today? She goes on to say, Well, I know your mother wouldn t be apart of this, so I am
calling to ask, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is taking a cab, as we speak, to the police department to turn himself in, says mom. Anger builds in
me thinking of what to say, a long pause goes by, and I decide to pipe up Good, That s what he should
have done in the first place, instead of lying to all of us, and he wonders why we can t believe him. I
don t know if I can ever believe him anymore; I ve lost every bit of trust I have. I just cannot think
about this anymore today, says mom. A dial tone comes over the phone, again.
Needless to say, my brother spent two hours in jail before he was bailed out by my mother. His bail
cost her $500.00 and was the last bit of money she had to live on until her payday. I heard he told her
he would pay her back, but he has said that about a thousand times in the past three years and she has
never seen a dime. He continues his crazy road of lies and still wonders why we don t believe him.
Wonders if we will ever trust him

  • 2. Disadvantages Of Plastic Vs Plastic In modern times, there are numerous materials used to make the everyday necessities we need in life such as our phones, clothes, shoes, plastic bags, and many more. However we could narrow the materials down to metal based products, polymer based products/ plastics, and cellulose based products/paper. To narrow things even down further so that we could have an argument, plastic and cellulose could both be used to make the same type of material such as containers for juice, containers for food, chairs, tables and many more. With this, we could now compare if plastic or paper is the better material to make our basic necessities. I would say that plastic would be better because of its durability, energy efficiency in making plastics, and the ability to mold plastic. First of all, plastic materials are more durable because of their physical property. The perfect example for this would be the paper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People would say that plastic in landfills would just stay there and if we keep on using plastic the waste problem would just worsen. I think that the problem here is why do people put plastics in landfills mixed with biodegradable materials. There are ways to properly recycle plastic. This comes to my third argument for why plastic beats paper. It is better because we could change its physical shape to things we really need. Richard Stein, from the University of Massachusetts, stated that plastics could be melted and formed into different structures such as propellers for wind turbines, food containers and many more [3]. Imagine being able to reuse plastic as long as the quality of it can still be recyclable, but if it isn t anymore, Richard Stein also suggested that plastic could be converted to energy by burning it since it is made of petroleum [3]. To conclude, plastic is better than paper because it saves energy in production, is durable, can be recycled, and can be transformed into energy. I rest my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Madeleine Leininger s Cultural Care Diversity Theory Nursing theory provides the basis, or framework, of the nursing profession and helps to identify the unique qualities of the profession. Without theory to explain the focus of the nursing profession, the profession may lose direction and its understanding of new knowledge to build upon the discipline (CCN, 2014). Theories must be applied in various settings such as bedside nursing, lead nurse management, and executive management. One of the issues that our local healthcare system has been dealing with is an increase in culturally diverse patients. There has been a recent surge in Sudanese and Hispanic populations seeking healthcare. The direct care staff treating these patients need to have resources available to provided culturally competent care. This includes things such as translators, translating devices such as the blue telephone , and culturally appropriate spiritual care. The theory chosen for analysis in this paper is Madeleine Leininger s Cultural Care Diversity Theory. Leinenger s theory looks at individual patients with relation to their cultural heritage. The pieces of her theory include culture, culture care, and culture care similarities and differences pertaining to transcultural human care (CCN, 2014). This middle range theory has the potential to influence nurses to provide culturally competent care to patients such as Hispanics. The writer of this paper has unintentionally used Leinenger s theory in practice while caring for patients. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

CAPM results can be compared to the best expected rate of return that investor can possibly earn in other investments with similar risks, which is the cost of capital. Under the CAPM, the market portfolio is a well diversified, efficient portfolio representing the non diversifiable risk in the economy. Therefore, investments have similar risk if they have the same sensitivity to market risk, as measured by their beta with the market portfolio. So, the cost of capital of any investment opportunity equals the expected return of available investments with the same beta. This estimate is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then we noticed that in exhibit 4, the period of historical data is from 1992 1996. However , the stock of Waterhouse Investor Srvcs only last to Sep 1996, in order to compare the data in the same time horizon, we select the period of 5 years, started from Sep 1991 to Sep 1996. We use ri=(Pt Pt 1+Dt)/Pt 1 to calculate the monthly return rate of stocks. When the stock split, ri= (x/y*Pt Pt 1+x/y*Dt)/Pt 1 We chose VW portfolio of NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ rather than EW of NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ because the value weight portfolio can reflect the real market situation better. We use the equation ri=(Pt Pt 1+Dt)/Pt 1 to calculate the monthly return of stock of Charles Schwab Corp, Quick amp; Reilly Group and Waterhouse Investor Srvcs. Then we have two methods to calculate the Beta of Equity for each company. The first method is using equation COV(Ri,Rm)/Var(Rm) to get the Beta. Then we use BAsset=E/(E+D)*BE+D/(E+D)*BD to calculate the Beta of Asset. We assume that the debt of these companies is risk free, because debt represents only a small fraction of the firm s value. • 5. Child Custody Interests Child custody arrangements have evolved over the years from a time when children were once seen as property of the father. This began to change as society became more focused on the development of children, understanding the formative years of childhood evolved into adulthood. Mothers have historically been granted custody in the majority of custody cases as determined in nineteenth century by the tender year s doctrine. Once the tender years doctrine had been determined to be in violation of the fourteenth amendment the primary caretaker rule was developed based on who was the primary caretaker prior to the divorce. With the increase in divorce rates and the legislation of Uniform Marriage and Divorce Act of 1976 set the standard for the Best Interests of the Child. The best interest of the child concept moved away from parental rights, focusing on several factors such as relationships between parent and child, school and home adjustments, mental and physical wellbeing of parents, and wishes of both parents. ... Diseases and sickness comes to play now and then, but, for the most part, affect the poor and undeveloped countries most heavy; developed countries like the U.S.A. have solutions and vaccine for diseases and thus fear of sickness do not arise often. However, when they do, it is can become a pandemic, a massive widespread of hazardous disease that potentially threatens the human population. To prevent epidemics, countries formed the World Health Organization (WHO) to create the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) to help announce an event of an extreme health hazard that spread (or is spreading) internationally and need international coalition to cure or resolve. There are multiple phrases to pandemic before the PHEIC happens. To explore the phases of a pandemic and when a PHEIC occur, I carried out simulation through a game called Pandemic II to evaluate the phases and the reaction of the world and WHO. Before talking about the simulation, there needs to be an understanding of the phases of a pandemic: Interpandemic phase, Alert phases, Pandemic phase, Transition phase. Each phase carries a special role in how the world react to solve a pandemic. The Interpandemic phase is more of a cautionary phase; nothing is happening during this phase and life goes on normally. Cisco is the leader in the switches and router market. Cisco was described as a classic start up fairy tale. Indirect sales and distribution through resellers was responsible for the small percentage of products delivered in the early 1990s. Cisco model was praised as a successful indirect sales and channel strategy. In 1995, Chambers (CEO) took the helm and the company played a leading role in the internet revolution. Data VARs? or both? I would recommend the distribution of VoIP products through both voice and data VARs. Even though voice channel was considerably more consolidated than the data channel however it is agreed that voice needed to be added to the mix of already existing data VARs. In the data market, margins for the resellers where in the region 12%to 20% due to the channel competition. On one hand, it makes sense to stay with existing margin structure because the new technology delivered huge cost advantage for the end user. But the Voice VARs were entrenched with PBX firms and it would cannibalize introducing new product line. The maturing nature of the networking market and opportunity provided Cisco to expand their business and needed to the keep the productivity with the existing data VARs. 4. • 9. Francis Galton Eugenics Eugenics involves applying principles of genetics and heredity for the purpose of improving the human race. The term eugenics was first invented by Francis Galton in the late 1800 s. Francis Galton was an English intellectual whose body of work spanned many fields, including statistics, psychology, meteorology and genetics (Shultz 114 116). Francis Galton s first academic foray into eugenics analyzed the characteristics, such as superior intelligence, of England s upper classes and concluded they were hereditary; therefore, desirable traits could be passed down through generations (Shultz 116). (p.4) The house was a sepulcher, our fear and suffering lay buried in the ruins. The house would then become an isolated tomb that will never be inhabited by anyone again. This hinted a much more significant meaning under its surface beauty, which contributes to the setting of a Gothic novel. In addition, the library in Manderly is like a church (p.76) a room for peace, a room for meditation , with an ancient mossy smell, scrolled ceiling, dark panelling and heavy curtains, also giving a sense of sacredness. • 14. Frattached Ear Lobe Experiments Introduction/Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the allele frequency of attached versus detached ear lobes in our society and distinguish if there is a recognizable difference between the two. This is a trait based on a single gene and is easily studied. Attached ear lobes connect directly to the side of the head, while detached ear lobes hang down below the point of attachment. One objective is to determine which earlobe is more dominant for our population. Hypothesis: If a large enough population is studied and all detached and attached ear lobes are counted, I conclude the study will indicate both types of ear lobes will be relatively equal. Methods: I chose the Town Center Mall as a place for my study, having considered a mall was a great place to reach a large segment of the population. There was a diverse population for both age and race as well as an adequate number of males and females. These words to the African Americans were their saving grace. This first section of the Emancipation Proclamation promises the freedom of African Americans through the protection of the American Government and the United States military. This was the first time this had been promised to African Americans because during the time of slavery all the protection that they had was from their master, so the promise of protection from the American Government was a step forward that many African Americans did not think that they would ever achieve. However, any influence that refined carbohydrates has on mood could be commensurate with their proportion in the overall diet; studies are therefore needed that measure overall intakes of carbohydrate and sugar, glycemic index (GI), and glycemic load. The glycemic load (GL) of food is a number that estimates how much the food will raise a person s blood glucose level after eating it. One unit of glycemic load approximates the effect of consuming one gram of glucose. Glycemic load accounts for how much carbohydrate is in the food and how much each gram of carbohydrate in the food raises blood glucose levels. Glycemic load is based on the glycemic index (GI), and is calculated by multiplying the grams of available carbohydrate in the food times the food s GI and then dividing by 100. Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person s thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well being. People with depressed mood can feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, ashamed or restless. • 29. Analysis Of Clip Analysis Un Chen Andalou Clip Analysis This clip is from the 1929 movie, Un Chien Andalou. This film uses two specific formal choices that illustrate it s surrealism, including discontinuity editing and close ups. Discontinuity editing in this film went against Hollywood s continuity rules of seamlessly blending scenes together that not only made narrative sense, but visual sense as well. However in Un Chien Andalou, these rules are broken by obscure, random images that don t seem to fit together and lack any narrative sense. In the clip, we see a scene of a man staring at his hand where ants are crawling out of a hole, then we see an image of a person s underarm hair that soon transitions into a picture of a sea urchin. These series of images don t make much sense when put together, yet they illustrate the surreality of the mind and how our thought patterns often lack any significance. The swarming of the ants in the hand is an example of lack of pattern because it symbolizes the fragmented or swarming images of our mind. These scenes are not only non linear, but they are also discontinuous and show that our reality is constantly evolving; we walk away with a different interpretation of the movie each time. Another formal choice that Un Chien Andalou uses is the close up, we see this used in the first few minutes of the clip when the women s eye is cut. The use of the close up in this scene brings this grotesque act to the forefront, where we cannot help but look away every time we see it. 2. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Threats To Internal Validity Research Methods Threats to internal validity There are several threats to internal validity related to participants based on lack of information about the individuals selected for the study. Maturation: What are the age differences among the students in each group? Are they similar in age, experience, knowledge, and wisdom? Regression: How were the students achieving in the first place? Selection: Was one group brighter than the other group to begin with? Mortality: Researchers need to choose a large sample and compare those who drop out with those who remain in the experiment on the outcome measure (Creswell, 2008, p.308). Making such a personal connection can simply involve talking to students on a more informal level and engaging with them as people rather than exclusively as students. It also involves raising our awareness and developing some understanding about the lives of students. Students often lead complex lives and staff need to understand that wider context: perhaps adjusting to living on their own for the first time, feeling lonely, making friends, caring for parents, dealing with grief, coping with a disability or simply juggling other commitments including family life or employment (Harding, J. • 34. Ethical Values From The Book The Dispossessed Written By... What is ethics? It is a code of conduct that a human being lives by. Being ethical makes life a bit easier and simpler because of the boundaries and code of conduct we set for our selves. Many authors implement their own ethical values into their stories, which sometimes give the reader an insight into the kind of person the author is. Making references to an article by Daniel P Jaeckle, I will be analyzing the three ethical values from the book The Dispossessed written by Ursula K. LeGuin, that have been layered together in a way that it creates interpersonal ethics, ethics of mutual aid, ethics of shared pain, and ethics of the bond, designed to meet the needs of an anarchist society. Anarchism is a philosophy based on voluntary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Only weakness. (Ch. 7) In his article, Jaeckle hints that LeGuin borrowed this ethical value from the work of a Russian anarchist Peter Kropotkin. It can be said that Shevek increases the variety of the sociality to species way beyond human beings. He calls this so called species social species . The fact that he does this is so important because it signifies that being social is not something that is religiously necessary or related to someone s past. Being social or anti social can occur at any age through out someone s life. From the above quote, Shevek s dialogue can be perceived as an interpretation of Darwin s principle the survival of the fittest. Yes, it is somewhat true that people who are social are the strongest and those who are anti social are weak, only because the social species know how to get around people and the anti social ones are too afraid to speak to anyone else, hence they sometimes get into trouble even if they didn t mean to. How does this relate to ethics? Well, according to the quote above, a competitive society that focuses on domination rather than equality will commit an unethical blunder. This blunder will lead to misunderstanding of the importance of the forces that moves humanity and the other social species forward and to evolution. Where does mutual aid come into play here? How is mutual aid connected to the social species? It is rather simple. Most social species tend to live ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Abolishment In Frankenstein Despite how extravagantly different the creation scene is in Shelley s novel compared to what is presented on screen, there is little to say on the subject. As already mentioned in the introduction, the tradition of exuberant, showy creation scenes didn t begin with the original textit{Frankenstein} (1931), but with the 1910 edition, where it lends half of its runtime to the conjuration of the monster. Each iteration of Frankenstein thereafter copies this extravagant method of portraying the creation scene, and as they do so, knowledge of Shelley s minimal description is lost. First, we must explore why her version of events isn t inclusive of the embellishment and indulgence on screen. In Shelley s text, the scene consists of a few ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet he acknowledges that this moment is not one to celebrate, and thus compensates for this using other methods, turning the showy scene from a contradiction to a juxtaposition that emphasises the monstrosity of not only the monster, but Victor s actions in creating it: First, the monster lunges from a great copper sarcophagus filled with water to make it a kind of womb. After he lands sprawling in the spill tank under it, Victor lifts him up, vainly tries to show him how to walk, then ties him standing to a set of chains. But when the struggling creature is struck by a falling piece of wood and shortly goes limp, Victor concludes that he himself has killed this luckless heir to massive birth defects. and that this evil must be destroyed...forever. footcite{James Heffernan, Looking at the Monster: Frankenstein and Film pp.143} This departure from the novel highlights Victor as a more paternal figure than the text implies, making a point of the undercurrent of dread the scene should evoke, yet contrivedly conveying Victor s repulsion at the creature in this scene, Victor is less repulsed by the creature, as Shelley s text strongly emphasises, but more toward his own actions. It is only when Victor wakes up to the sight of the lumbering creature in the next scene does he cry out No! . This decision creates a confusing tone where it could initially be misconstrued by the audience that Branagh s Victor is merely startled by the presence of a monster he had presumed dead, muddling up the message of Victor s regret and of the repercussions of rebirth that Shelley intends on ... Most children want to be dancers, singers, doctors, lawyers, etc. I always wanted to be a lawyer and advance to being a judge. Now that I am older, the judicial system is where I need to be, just not a prosecutor or judge. I have changed my mind about being a prosecutor and judge because it is too political. I would be fair. The defense attorney is responsible for proving beyond a shadow and a doubt that the client is innocent. The job of the defense attorney is, by any standard, difficult. It is difficult for a variety of reasons. First, defendants often talk to the police without an attorney present. When they do this, they themselves in crimes and to provide police with evidence that can later be used against them. Second, defense attorneys often handle so many cases that it is simply impossible for them to understand the details of each case. To manage the large number of criminal cases they are responsible for, defense attorneys often have little choice but to spend only a few minutes with each defendant and to base their legal recommendations on the information they receive from their clients and the prosecutor s office. • 39. The Meltdown Of Nuclear Families In The 1900s A nuclear family is a family composed of a married father and mother and their children. This type of family became increasingly popular following the industrial age in the 1900s. The nuclear family soon became the norm as people transferred from large kin groups to smaller independent families (Pulsipher, 2015). This posed a problem in the beginning because close relatives no longer played a role in raising children and no longer had anyone to look after them in old age as they did when kin groups were common. However, as time went on, nuclear families faced challenges and soon began to fallout as a result of changes in couples. In order for a family to be considered nuclear, the parents must be married and have children However, the number of unmarried couples in the United States nearly doubled in the 1900s as it grew more common for people to not further their relationships. This caused the number of homes consisting of nuclear families to reach their lowest level falling from 45% of all households in 1960 to just 25.6% last year (Feder, 2001). Not only did it grow common for couples to not get married, divorce grew common. This influenced the number of children who, instead of being a part of a nuclear family, were a part of a single parent family. In fact, due to divorce, 43% of American children spent at least part of their childhood in a single parent family in 1996 (Feder, 2001). Don Feder, author on human events, explains that these shifts in attitude towards marriage and nuclear families has been caused by changes in cultural influences such as media.
