Abstract
The sclerenchyma ring in the stem of Phaseolus lunatus, commonly known as lima bean, was
measured in relation to the wavelength of light they were grown in (650, 475 nm). It was hypothesized
that wavelength of light affects plant growth. It was predicted that plants grown when exposed to red
light (650 nm) would grow taller and therefore have thicker sclerenchyma cell rings . The results of
the t test failed to support both the hypothesis and prediction (P = 0.444599). When compared to other
studies, this experiment appears to have skewed data; therefore, although the hypothesis was rejected,
there is still evidence supporting the concept of a full spectrum of light is essential for proper plant
