Constructive plate boundaries create new crust as plates move apart, such as at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the Eurasian and North American plates are diverging. Conservative boundaries involve plates sliding past one another without creating or destroying crust, often causing earthquakes, like at the San Andreas Fault where the Pacific and North American plates slide in the same direction at different speeds.

4. Constructive plate margin Also called a tensional or divergent boundary This type of boundary is found mainly under the oceans. Here, two plates move apart. This lets the mantle rise up and reach the surface to make new crust (=construct).
