The document describes a method used to construct foundations on soft red mud deposits from an aluminum refining process. Red mud has properties similar to soft clay with low bearing capacity. The project site was underlain by 15-42 meters of red mud overlying shale bedrock. Foundations were constructed by improving the ground to 12-14 meters depth using granular piles, compacted gravel columns installed on a triangular grid. Load tests on an improved test pile indicated a bearing capacity of 42 tons. Settlement analyses predicted total foundation settlements of around 50mm under the design load, confirming the structure would be safe.
