The Computer Misuse Act of 1990 was introduced in the UK in response to increasing computer hacking incidents. The Act specifies three main computer-related offenses: unauthorized access to computer material; unauthorized access with intent to commit or facilitate further offenses; and unauthorized modification of computer material. These offenses carry penalties of up to 6 months in prison and unlimited fines depending on the severity of the offense. Prosecution under the Act can be difficult, as it is challenging to prove offenses and obtain evidence from companies, who may be embarrassed by hacking incidents. While hacking has increased in both hobby and criminal contexts, prosecution and punishment for Computer Misuse Act offenses often remain relatively small.
