Sea near Scotland and at Prudhoe Bayin Alaska.
BP LogoAmoco
Amoco began its life as a part of John D. Rockefeller s powerful Standard Oil Trust. Incorporated in
1889 as the Standard Oil Company (Indiana), the company s first challenge was to build a refinery in
Whiting, Indiana, specially designed to handle high sulphur crude oil from a field near Lima, Ohio.
In 1912, a year after dissolution of the Rockefeller Trust, company scientist William Burton and his
colleague, Robert Humphreys, received a patent for the thermal cracking process that doubled the
yield of gasoline from a barrel of crude oil, while also boosting its octane rating. Headquartered in
Chicago, Illinois, Standard Oil of Indiana remained the company s name until April of 1985 when it
became Amoco, reflecting a growing international presence.

Plato s Ethics: An Overview
This document explores the meaning of human life, its purpose, what it serves for and also what
factors affect them and how. We analyze Plato s expressions and thoughts about what makes us
humans. From virtues to building a perfect city, Plato tries to explain in different occasions the
morality behind humans. He is focused on understanding the why and how can humans reach their
highest potential with the given resources such as nature and others.
Plato begins explaining the beginning. The search for knowledge, the understanding what are things
and what are their purposes. As argued in the Meno, perplexity is an intermediary stage towards
knowledge. As we know, with knowledge comes everything else. It is explained also that in order to
want to seek knowledge, one must possess virtues, like courage. Courage is the one to push you into
knowing something. These are the things that will drive someone into knowing the basis of
everything. For example a square, in order to do one or understand it one must know what are lines,
points, etc.
Next, begins a discussion on what justice and injustice are, a virtue or not, whether they make us
happy or not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We need to be amazed and interested in something if we want to learn about it. For example, is as if a
boy watches a soccer game for the first time. He is intrigued by the players moves and tricks and if he
arrives at such point where he likes it, he would love to imitate them. Once he know the basics, or so
called definitions, everything else follows. I also agree that the next step is to have courage, courage to

Pregnancy And The Birth Of A Fetus
Since 1955, ultrasounds have been performed on pregnant women to search for imperfections and
abnormalities during gestation. 1 These ultrasound machines use non ionizing sound waves to produce
images of the growing fetus. When they re used in moderation and for diagnostic purposes only, they
re considered safe. However, different studies have shown that there are possible harmful affects that
can come from obstetric sonography that directly affect the fetus when they re improperly used. There
are a variety of types of ultrasounds that an expecting woman can receive throughout the duration of a
pregnancy. All of these types of ultrasounds use sound waves and have the same goal in tracking the
gestational age of a fetus, growth and development, placental location, to detect irregularities that may
occur throughout a woman s pregnancy, and to monitor amniotic fluid volume levels. 1 Obstetric
sonography can affect a fetus by creating mechanical vibrations, heat, and air bubbles in the fluids of
the baby s body. When women receive ultrasounds for medical use, they are performed by trained
technologists, supervised by doctors, and the principle of ALARA (As Low As Reasonably
Achievable) is applied during the exams. After the development of ultrasounds, people started to use
them for entertainment purposes and to have a souvenir picture of the baby.2 These unnecessary
exams were administered by untrained, unlicensed technicians, and often without a doctor s
supervision. 3

Instagram Is The World s Greatest Picture Sharing Social...
Introduction
Instagram is the world s greatest picture sharing social network. Instagram was created by Kevin
Systrom and Mike Krieger and then sold to Facebook s owner Mark Zuckerburg for $1 billion in cash
and stock. Just in three months Instagram gained one million users. Most apps that are on the top
charts paid tons of money to get there, but the photo sharing app, Instagram, easily sparked its way to
the top without spending a dime (Cutler). Today, Instagram has managed to rack up over 150 million
active monthly users, while also averaging around 40 million pictures that are shared on Instagram
(Patkar). Although Instagram is incredible in its accomplishments and is now worth about 35 billion
dollars, there are some policies that the average user would like to change about the app. When
analyzing the popular app, the sharing of user s photos to third parties, the inactive username policy,
and the usage of device identifiers have played a major role in the lost of many Instagram users in the
past few years.
Background/Issues
Although the issue regarding Instagram selling its users photos to third parties happened two years
ago, this was one of Instagram s biggest issues since its establishment. According to the CNET article
on cnet.com, Declan McCullagh wrote, Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users
photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public
outcry. Under the new policy, Facebook

Personal Narrative Essay On Being Homeless
No amount of sleep in the world could cure the tiredness I feel. I don t know where I found the quote,
probably on my endless hours scrolling through the internet, but it was my favorite quote and it
somewhat applied to my life. Although, my life wasn t the worst (I could have been homeless or had
cancer) it was generally unbelievably boring. You would expect a teenage girl like me to go to an
endless amount of parties... or maybe actually go outside once in awhile, but that was just not me. I
preferred to be on my bed, curled up in the blankets rereading my favorite books or thinking about
how my every action is all but insignificant in the grand scheme of things (Clarissa, she s my best
friend since pre k, calls those my existential crisis ). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My eyes shot open and I took a large gasping breath. For a moment I thought that I was in heaven
with all the bright white light around me. I tried to move my neck to see where I was or if anyone was
around me, but I felt a searing pain course through my body. It felt like someone was jackhammering
against my soul. I felt like I had been shoved down the garbage disposal, and I was in tiny chunks
where all my tiny nerves were being fried by electricity. I didn t have that moment of peaceful
forgetfulness that people have in the movies. I immediately remembered how I felt my bones snapped
seemingly in half and how I tried to call out to Clary, but my voice didn t work and I didn t know if
she was okay. Every bone in my body was aching, but I had to prioritize. First on my list was to find
Clary and apologize for us getting into a car crash. That s if she s even alive, said that ever present
pessimistic voice inside my head. But I refused to think about that, the only thing that was keeping me
from breaking down and sobbing was the hope of seeing my best friend. I got off of my mind tangent
and tried to stay focused. After apologizing to Clary, I would have to apologize to Katherine; I had
crashed her new car. Back on track, step one finding Clary. I slowly turned my head to the side to see

Franz Kafka s A Hunger Artist And The Metamorphosis
Self insertion, a literary device in which a character who is the real author of a work of fiction appears
as a character within fiction, either overtly or in disguise. Imagine yourself being unable to obtain the
recognition of your parents your whole life and leaving this world as a nobody. The writings of Franz
Kafka not only spoke of the absurdity of life, but also about who he was. They told about what type of
human being he was, and how he was feeling. You can see this in both of his well known short stories,
A Hunger Artist and The Metamorphosis. I believe that there is a personal link between author and
character and that it can be found in most of his works.
Franz Kafka was born on July 3, 1883, in Prague. The writer grew up in a middle class Jewish family
and studied law at the University of Prague. By the time Kafka was six he had lost his two younger
brothers, they were only infants, leaving Franz as the only boy in the family. This tragedy shaped the
family for the rest of their lives. Growing up Kafka s relationship with his parents suffered, neither of
them supporting his desire of become a writer. Hermann Kafka, Franz s father, was a forceful man and
made it apparent throughout the household. Kafka s father had a profound impact on both Kafka s life
and writing. He was a tyrant of sorts, with a wicked temper and little appreciation for his son s
creative side ( Franz Kafka. Bio. A E Television Networks). Although it was difficult to get along with

Stereotypes In I Want To Be Miss America
Both of these excerpts come from a new title called representation, and this is accurately shown in
both excerpts. It fits into this category, because it shows how Americans think of beauty as a
representation to your mentality . We see in I Want to be Miss America that Americans have a
predicament in the way we see women in terms of beauty and capability . The author of this excerpt
describes the ambition of young a girl , which is adjusting to an American lifestyle , to be Miss

Symbolism Of Humankind In Lord Of The Flies By William...
Humankind is an imperfect species with many flaws. Author William Golding shows these in the
novel Lord of the Flies. It is shown through a group of schoolboys crashing on an island without any
adults. Without the rules and constraints of civilization the children show humanity s true nature and
raw instinct. The imperfections of man are shown through symbols in the novel such as the scar on the
island, the beast, and the schoolboys who crashed onto the island.
The first symbol that is used in the novel was the scar on the island. The scar was where the plane
crash landed, leaving a destructive mark on the island. He looked up and down the scar. And this is
what the tube done. This quote explains that the scar was made by the fuselage crashing and ripping
into the earth leaving a giant gash on the island. The scar symbolizes mankind s destruction and how
humans can destroy nature just by entering it. The island was untouched and resembled paradise, at
the same time in the outside world a gruesome war was occurring. The carnage and havoc that reigned
over society is also evident on the island. There was a clean slate for them to build a society without
violence, but it did not happen because of destruction being a natural tendency of mankind. The scar
foreshadowed the destruction the island. During the children s stay, the island suffered through the
children s wrath. The children slaughtered pigs, picked the bushes dry of fruit, and also started forest
fires. What

Political And Historical Conflict Of India And Pakistan
Long history of political and historical conflict can trigger two countries to fight over a problem very
minimal. The Kargil war was fought because a country crossed another country s border. This was a
war between two countries India and Pakistan they are very similar countries they share common
cultural, geographical and similar economic. Before 1947 India and Pakistan was a whole country but
in 1947 after the British Raj new nations were formed. When the nation got divided into two India
ended up with a majority of Hindu and a minority of muslim population. In Pakistan the majority is
muslim with a minority of hindu, it emerged as a Islamic Republic. After the split of the two countries
have had three majors wars and one undeclared war. The Kargil war was fought in May of 1999 and
ended July of 1999, it was located in Kargin the district of Kashmir, India had named it operation
Vijay. This was an inter state war, it was fought in mountain range, which is called a high altitude
warfare. It was very dangerous because of the harsh cold and rough mountain, also both counties had
access to nuclear power. This was one of the first wars that was widely covered by the media. India
lost about 500 soldiers, and pakistan lost about 5000 soldiers. The difference is quite shocking but
India was more prepared and had more power than pakistan.
The war started when the pakistani military went on the Indian side of the Line Of Control. So india

Fate, Destiny, and Predestination in Beowulf Essays
Fate, Destiny, and Predestination in Beowulf
An epic story is one that combines elements of supernatural powers and heroic deeds with plebeian
troubles. In Beowulf , the unknown author paints a typical yet magnificent tale that is one of the great
epic chronicles of the Middle Ages. Like the poems of Homer, Beowulf possesses terrible monsters,
men with supernatural powers, the search for glory, and deadly defeats. However, this medieval
account brings a new element into the folds: the association between established religious forces and
personal choices. The concepts of predestination and fate intertwine in this work with the idea of free
will.
Throughout the poem, characters struggle to understand who and/or what is the guiding ... Show more

Noticeably present, in fact, are references to each important character s ancestors and lineage. With
each mention of a character, the father is also interjected (Beowulf, son of Ecgtheow or Wiglaf, son of
Weohstan). Destiny initially comes into play when Beowulf arrives at the shores of Denmark and is
unknown to the guards. King Hrothgar proclaims, I used to know [Beowulf] when he was a young
boy. / His father before him was called Ecgtheow (lines 372 3). Clearly, family ties are necessary to
succeed in the world of kings. Beowulf is immediately given leave to enter the country and to follow
up an old friendship (line 376) because the King is certain that the young man is destined to be a great
warrior in Denmark. Certainly, past conquests and victories play a part in Beowulf s renown, but
ancestry is initially more impressive. Beowulf s destiny is, therefore, partly determined by his father s
feats and legacy. The opportunities given to the now famous warrior are a result of the powerful
family that he comes from. Thus, destiny plays a prophetic part in shaping Beowulf s future.
While destiny and fate are related, in Beowulf the two ideas play different roles. Destiny is the
concept that allows sons to be marked for greatness before they have come of age, while fate is an
independent guiding force that does not rely upon worldly interactions (knowledge of lineage,

Implementing the Ramsar Convention in Developing...
Implementing the Ramsar Convention in Developing Countries: The Role of Local Community
Support and Involvement
Over the last two decades, a consensus has gradually emerged that long term conservation depends on
understanding and support from those closely connected to the environment and its resources (Shine,
Klemm, 1999.) Several international environmental conventions have reflected this consensus by
establishing a legal basis to involve local communities, especially those in developing countries, in
their implementation. Recent changes in the focus of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands are
consistent with this global trend towards emphasizing the importance of community support and
involvement. Adopted in Ramsar, Iran on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By contrasting and comparing case studies in developing countries with varying degrees of wetland
conservation success, it is clear that local community involvement and support of conservation is
critical to success. Acknowledging this, those sites with unsuccessful wetland conservation have
begun to plan initiatives to promote community participation and support.
This study focuses solely on wetland conservation in developing countries, where lifestyles and lack
of government capacity make community support and involvement in wetland conservation policies
and practices particularly important. People in the developing world are more closely connected to the
environment than those in developed countries. Since they rely more directly on the extraction of
natural resources and use of natural services for their sustenance and economy, their lifestyles have a
more direct impact on the immediate ecosystem. Given that all countries, but especially developing
countries...need to enhance their internal capacity to manage their environmental protection and
sustainable development, a lack of national and state government capacity results in a greater need for
the support and involvement of local communities in wetland conservation (Susskind, et al. 2002).
Since developing country governments may not have the finances, institutions, or knowledge to
strictly enforce their wetland conservation policies, community policy support is

PREDATOR PREY RELATIONS LAB Background Research: Predators and prey are organisms that
interrelate, and they can influence on another s success in reproduction. Predators are organisms that
consume other organisms their prey. These two organisms evolve together. They live in an
environment where they must develop certain adaptations to survive. When an adaptation is
developed, it gives an organism certain physical characteristics that create an advantage for survival
and can come to dominate in a population. An adaptation aids survival by either decreasing a prey s

area for fifteen seconds. When told to stop, each student will tally up his kills . If a predator is in the
process of capturing a prey when told to stop, he must drop it. 6. Repeat this process for each
generation and make the proper adjustments required for each. 7. At the end of the lab, share your data
with the class and add up the number of prey killed. Observations: In certain parts of the field, the
grass was very tall and the prey that were in that area were very difficult to find. Because of this many
predators ignored the grassy areas which caused a lot of competition for prey in the other areas of the
field. Certain prey such as the corn was easily concealed in the grass because of its small size.
However, in the dirt area, the color of the corn really made it stand out. In the dirt area of the field, the
pinto beans were concealed because its camouflage characteristics allowed it blended in with the dirt,
but it stuck out in the grass. The black beans were small black so it was concealed it both the grass and

2. Registering Property
According to the World Bank s report Doing Business in 2007 How to Reform , Nigeria s reforms
have led to a reduction in the time required to complete the process of property registration from
274 to 80 days, but a lot still needs to be done because it takes only 1 day in some other countries such
as Norway and Singapore. We should however note that part of the reduction in time is likely as a
result of improvements in property registration which has been implemented in Abuja and in
Lagos as well. In fact the Doing Business indication of 80 days is based on a test case of property
registration in Lagos. I urge other state governments to replicate the improvements achieved in the
Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) and Lagos State in their various states. Investors are
comfortable in environments where registration is automated and procedures are minimal, and will be
glad to invest in such places.
Automation though important, should be accompanied by changes in work culture in government
registries. The time taken to register property must be substantially reduced. The current time taken is
definitely unacceptable if we want to attract private investment.
The fees paid to register property in Nigeria are extremely high and have

The Human Race Capturing Marine Animals
The earliest records of the human race capturing marine animals, specifically fish, dates back over
40,000 years to the Upper Paleolithic time period (Endangered). Initially, fishing and harvesting
aquatic animals was for the sole purpose of survival and means of finding food. Fast forward 40,000
years and fishing has shifted from a necessity to big business, wiping out the majority of oceanic
resources and setting the marine apocalypse for the year 2048, when ecologists predict all species of
fish will have gone extinct. Oceanic resources are dwindling at a rapid rate. The pending bioethical
question is this: should further restrictions on fishing be implemented in the global fishing industry, as
well as sport fishing? The answer is still up for debate.
Because of overfishing, populations of saltwater fish have dwindled to surprisingly low numbers. But
what of the few populations of people that still depend on fishing for food? And what of people who
fish for sport, but only keep their legal limit? And how will placing restrictions affect both regional
and global seafood economies? In 2005, 24.1 million tons of seafood were available for consumption
in North America alone, with an astounding 107 million tons worldwide (Overfishing). And how
would restricting fisheries affect worldwide health? Nearly 16% of the world s protein consumption is
provided by fisheries. These questions have driven bioethical debates since the early 1960s and remain

Explain Mr. Proctor s Point Of View Of The Crucible
The Colony Abigail s point of view. I was awakened by the sunlight streaming through my curtains.
Yesterday was my eleventh birthday and the last spent with my family in my home. I was a live in

The Pythagorean Theorem Was Discovered And First Proven By...
Background:
The Pythagorean Theorem was discovered and first proven by the Greek mathematician, Pythagoras.
The Pythagorean Theorem states that the sum of the squares of the two legs of a right triangle equals
the square of the hypotenuse of the triangle. In simpler words, when looking at the right triangle
below, a²+b²=c². This major discovery in the history of mathematics lead to the accomplishments of
many other basic things we do in life. The Pythagorean Theorem does not just stop at the famous
equation of a²+b²=c², but it has many other aspects. Whole numbers that can fit into this theorem are
commonly referred to as Pythagorean Triples. The Pythagorean Theorem includes numerous amounts
of poofs, from the basic proof to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the concept of the Pythagorean Triples was discovered, mathematicians were eager to validate
the concept. Euclid created a widely accepted formula in deriving a Pythagorean Triple, which can be
proved with the help of the unit circle and algebra.
Euclid s Formula and its Proof
Euclid s formula for a Pythagorean triple is: a = 2mn, b = m^2 n^2, c = m^2 + n^2
The variables: m and n: stand for positive, rational integers. It is important to remember that m has to
be greater than n, otherwise the statement valuing variable b on a Pythagorean triangle would be false
because b cannot
This can be understood in terms of the rational points on the unit circle. A unit circle is a circle with
the radius of 1.
We can draw a right triangle: a and b are the legs c is the hypotenuse
In the next part, we must use the trigonometric identity of sin2+cos2=1. For representational purposes,
we must look towards the following diagram for how the triangle would be represented in this proof.
The next step in formulating this next equation would require us to find the sine and cosine of
triangleABC. The sine formula is opposite/hypotenuse, which would equate to a/c. Additionally, the
formula for cosine is adjacent/hypotenuse, equating to b/c. Knowing the trigonometric identity, we can
derive the new eqution:
For the next step, we will need to know the equation of a [unit] circle: x2 + y2 = 1
We know that

Of Mice And Men Prejudice Quotes
Hypocrisy is the mother of all evil and prejudice is still her favorite child. In the three stories Of Mice

by the use of symbols. Initially in the story Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, there are obvious
times where unequal distribution of wealth, power and privilege between men and women is shown.

Aliens Are Real Essay
Have you ever wondered if people actually got abducted by aliens? Will most people who say they got

people don t even know each other. This is super crazy to me because those people don t even know
each other. What are the odds people would tell the exact same story, unless they actually got
abducted. This proves that it wasn t a hoax and something actually did happen to these people. After
lots of research, I believe that aliens are real. There are too many galaxies and evidence out there that

Most people think that aliens are not real. I asked 26 people and 15 of them said no, they do not
believe in aliens. This proves my point that most people do not believe in aliens. I think this because
no one has ever seen one so how are they suppose to believe it. Also, the picture you see on the
internet of aliens are likely photoshopped. You would think people that took the picture would take
more than one. Also, why are all of the picture so blurry. Another, reason people do not believe in
aliens because they are not in the bible. We have been researching for like hundreds of years and we
haven t found anything so how do we know that we will ever find anything. It is also unlikely people
have the habitat it takes to live like we do. How come all aliens look the exact same. Our universe is

aliens are on earth, why haven t there been more pictures and videos. Like, the pictures people say

Fairytales In The Bloody Chamber By Angela Carter
Fairy tales often show that it is the boys and men who are the ones allowed to go on adventures and
save the day, Angela Carter changes that by making it that anyone even girls and women, can share
those same curious, adventurous, and even heroic characteristics. The term is mainly used for stories
with origins in European tradition and, at least in recent centuries, mostly relates to children s
literature. Fairytales have been around for a long time, starting off as oral stories later to be collected
by the Grimm brothers in the early 19th century. It is normally males that would gather fairy tales;
although women, especially elderly ones, were the best sources of fairy tales in many of the cultures.

Our names are what give us our identity. In fairytales it is no different, a name can be a powerful
thing. An example of this is in the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, just by guessing Rumpelstiltskin s name
breaks the bargain made for the first born child. In The Bloody Chamber, we know that the first person
narrator is female, but her name is unmentioned. This is difference between the original story and
Angela Carter s is in the original the wife is not addressed other than wife whereas as in the Bloody
Chamber is called by multiple names, but mostly pet names by her husband. She is called Madame by
workers at the castle and with some diminutive words such as My little nun, Baby (17), My little love,
and My child (18) by her husband. The female narrator labels herself by some words such as I, the
orphan, the châtelaine and I, the little music student (13), a little girl (18), child (18), and his bride
(13). It seems that she adopts the adjectives attributed to her by the outer world. On the other hand, the
man she marries to holds an ancestral name of The Marquis (36) which symbolizes mastery and
power, and the heroine calls the Marquis, my husband and my purchaser (15). Having these names in
the story not only gives the story a fable feel but also shows the power dynamic between the narrator
and the Marquis. The main character goes on to describe how the Marquis looks at her like a house
wife would look at meat at the supermarket, the narrator compares herself to a female figure in an
etching described as a lamb chop (17). Comparing herself to a lamb, which is normally seen as the
victim, and the Marques is equated to a lion, the hunter, shows that the narrator sees how the dynamic

Analysis Of Viola Hastings s She s The Man
a) First Topic
Viola Hastings, is the protagonist in the film She s The Man. She is a female soccer player at Cornwall
University, until the school cuts her soccer team off from the after school extracurricular activities
program. After the sexist coach refuses her suggestion of joining the male soccer team, she
impersonates her brother and tryouts for the soccer team at Illyria. She believes the only way to attest
her capability is if she is unable to join the male soccer team at Cornwall is to beat them. Viola s
character would be a negative realistic representation of women, because she s an athletic woman who
remains attractive in the male gaze perspective. In the male gaze we would expect her to be fragile,
delicate and helpless woman rather than goal oriented and driven woman in order for her to remain
attractive to the male audience and characters in the film.
Viola s devotion to soccer presents her as possessing too much boyishness to her mother and other
adult females in the debutante society. She lacks several feminine mannerisms. For instance, while
Duke and Justin are physically fighting over her, she jumps on Justin s back and later removes
popcorn from her top in an unladylike fashion, of which she is reminded by her mother. There is a
later scene in the film when the debutantes are having dinner, Viola is chewing the chicken with her
mouth open and Cheryl, the debutante coach, reminds her of her manners by saying Viola, darling.

Regents Of The University Of California V. Bakke

Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1976)
Facts of the case:
In the early 1970 s UC Davis decided to have a dual admissions program for their medical school. The
purpose of having two admissions programs in one would be for regular students and the other one
would be for disadvantaged students. Minority applicants could now say they were disadvantaged so
they were put in the special pool which would make it easy for them to get into the medical program.
One major differences between both programs is that through the disadvantaged program you could
have lower than a 2.5 and still be eligible to get into the school.
The controversy began when Allan Bakke applied to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the Superior Court of Yolo County stated that Bakke should not be admitted into the
medical school because he failed to show that he would actually be admitted if there was no special
admissions program. Both sides appealed because Regents of the University of California didn t
believe it was unconstitutional and Bakke wanted to be admitted into the medical program.
The next step was onto The Supreme Court of California. They said the same exact thing that the
Superior Court of Yolo County said, however they said that Bakke should be admitted into the medical
program because the University, not Bakke, failed to show that he would not be admitted without the
specialty program. Regents of the University of California appealed this because both courts did not
agree with the points that they made.
Petition before the Supreme Court:
Both sides had major arguments and reasons why they thought their side was right. Regents of the
University of California said that their special admissions program helped limit discrimination in our
society. Medical schools normally were discriminatory towards minors (by the admission process
based of credentials) so this program helped ease that problem. The Regents of the University of
California also stated that the program will help poor communities by giving them physicians that will
want to go and help out the cause of where they grew up. Regents of the

The Treatment Of Bibi Haldar By Jhumpa Lahiri
This excerpt from The Treatment of Bibi Haldar by Jhumpa Lahiri has multiple themes, but one that
really stands out above others is the effects of ignorance. One would disagree with my choice of
theme, but one must not be so rash with their disagreement, first you must look at the writing
techniques and the choice of words that Lahiri uses in the excerpt. The ignorance in which I talk about
circulates around Bibi s family. If Lahiri describes her events in chronological order, which I believe
she does, then we can see that in the first paragraph, the family first expresses their ignorance of this
poor girl s illness when they contact priests, religion, etc. in order to heal their daughter instead of
official medical specialists. In the following paragraph, the author informs us of the many specialists
in the medical field that the family had contacted in regards to Bibi s ailment. None of ... Show more

in winter. Small, stuffy rooms, such as Bibi s, are breading grounds for diseases and bacteria. On top
of that, she has to work in order to get cotton for clothes, not even clothes; she also had to work for
her daily meals, and provisions. These factors are not uncontrollable factors, nor are they factors that
are unchangeable, but do to her family s ignorance, these factors exist Unfortunately, Bibi is forced to
live like this, and due to her own ignorance, she doesn t know any better.
Ignorance can have so many negative effects. Lahiri shows us evidence of the ignorance in each of the
paragraphs from the excerpt; the words she chooses in the paragraphs help the reader recognize her
theme, being ignorance. Lahiri has taught us that ignorance is truly NOT bliss; in fact, it s the opposite
of bliss. Ignorance does not only cause sorrow, sadness, unhappiness, and pain unto yourself but also

Yeats Irish Identity shaped poetry, mythology and history, other Irish writers, folktales, Irish Theatre.
Many people say that William Butler Yeats was the greatest poem writer from the 20th century but to
him he was just an ordinary person that had a love for writing poems. William Butler Yeats was born

Graeco-Roman Tragedies
Lord, what fools these mortals be! The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those
who think. A tragedy is a tragedy, and at the bottom, all tragedies are stupid. Give me a choice and I ll
take A Midsummer Night s Dream over Hamlet every time. Any fool with steady hands and a working
set of lungs can build up a house of cards and then blow it down, but it takes a genius to make people
laugh. The combination of William Shakespeare, Horace Walpole, and Steven King run together to
speak on the topic of comedies. We as human beings, being social creatures, have a need to laugh. We
find many things humours, and there are many types of comedies, as well as uses for the comedies we
make. There are many different forms of comedy from many different time periods which all fall
within three overarching sections; verbal, physical, and literary.
The first of these, literary, takes different forms over time. The majority can be described as Graeco
Roman, Shakespearean, and new age satire. Each of these categories could continue to expand with
the different stylistic elements of each, but we will explore the major points of each. The Greeks and
the Romans were the first to discover many of the things we use day to day, including the begins of
comedies.
The Graeco Roman style comedies took two major forms of comedy. That comedy sprang up and took
shape in connection with Dionysiac and Phallic ritual has never been doubted, (Arnold,

The Proposal For Jewish Proselytization And John Crocker...
One can draw interesting parallels between the proposal for Jewish proselytization and John Crocker s
biography of Samuel Johnson. To quote the remarks of one reviewer of Crocker s book, the merits of
Mr. Crocker s performance are on a par with those of a certain leg of mutton on which Dr. Johnson
dined, while travelling from London to Oxford, and which he, with characteristic energy, pronounced
to be as bad as bad could be, ill fed, ill killed, ill kept, and ill dressed. Similarly, the aforementioned
proposal is ill conceived, ill advised, and unfortunately, illness inducing. It bears mentioning that the
ardent advocates of Jewish proselytization are not pious Haredim men who spend their days poring
over the timeless texts of tradition nor are they of the Modern Orthodox persuasion, a coterie who
attempts the Sisyphean task of synthesizing values both ancient and modern. No, these zealous
purveyors of Judaism have emerged from the lonely pews and desolate temples of the more
progressive Reform and Conservative movements, a truth which is acutely revelatory. Salvific
imperialism is a notion foreign to both Judaism and a historically conscious conservatism. As Jewish
apathy to conversion is a subject well tread, it suffices to repeat that there remains no indication
whatsoever within the Bible that the Jews sought out converts. This inattention to missionizing reflects
Jewish recognition that Gentiles could achieve moral perfection outside the suffocating strictures

Career In Surgery
The career of being a surgeon is one of the most elite professions in the world. Before the 1980 s,
interns worked 120 hours a week without any rest. Due to this, many interns often experienced
extreme exhaustion, fatigue, and could not promptly perform their job. After the death of Libby Zion,
a patient who died after entering a hospital and the intern on the clock not responding in time due to
exhaustion, the ACGME ratified a law which only allowed an intern to work a maximum of 80 hours a
week with the same amount of pay and to introduce the use of night floats. In Challenging Operations:
Medical Reform and Resistance in Surgery, Kellogg studies three different hospitals (Advent,
Bayshore, and Calhoun) reactions to the new regulations. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The initial response to the new regulations was that the three hospitals which Kellogg studied rejected
the laws due to the old system created by the senior surgeons. In the old system, interns and those
under the resident chief had to work long hours and had to conform to the commands and rules of the
chiefs. With the new regulations, the senior surgeons feared that the reduced number of hours the
interns were required to work would reduce the experience the interns would have on the job and this
would make them bad surgeons. The introduction of night floats would threaten the continuity of care
for the patients. This would then threaten the values and ideas of the old system. This rise in tension
caused an unstable environment, between the defenders and reformers.
In the first chapter, Kellogg describes the day in life of an intern. The intern begins her shift at 4 in the
morning and is constantly on the move throughout the day. Kellogg followed and interviewed the
intern. Karen noted frequently how physically tired she was. Even though Karen frequently told
Kellogg how she was exhausted, she also noted how she needed to work the long hours to gain
experience and to ensure the care of the patients under her

A Look Into the Chicago Race Riots
The Civil War was fought over the race problem, to determine the place of African Americans in
America. The Union won the war and freed the slaves. However, when President Lincoln declared the
Emancipation Proclamation, a hopeful promise for freedom from oppression and slavery for African
Americans, he refrained from announcing the decades of hardship that would follow to obtaining the
new won freedom . Over the course of nearly a century, African Americans would be deprived and

The Negro Migration caused the population in the Chicago black belt to more than double from
50,000 to 125,000 making Chicago have the third or fourth largest black population next to New York,
Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington (7).
A large influx of colored people created many problems. First, there was a major problem in the
availability in housing, of which was responded to with racism. This is the root for the hatred between
the black and white communities. There wasn t enough housing in the black belt community, so
Negroes began to spill into white neighborhoods. The very existence of a colored person in a
neighborhood would lower the property values. When a house was sold to a colored person, the rent
for the house would be higher than the previous, white owner s rent. Real Estate companies believed
that it is a matter of common knowledge that house after house...whether under white or black agents,

Not knowing what to expect when I took my seat at the Atlanta Symphony Hall, I was anxious. I loved

We got to our seats early so we could be sure we were in a good location. The instrumentalists

Condom Distribution Essay
Condom Distribution
Condom distribution to adolescents has always been a very controversial subject. Margaret Pruitt
Clark display s her views on this issue in her short essay entitled, Condom Availability Promotes
Health, Saves Lives. Clark has many good points about distributing condoms to adolescents and the
reasons that these types of measures should be taken. I agree with many of her proposals but do not
believe that the school environment is the right place to do this.
The threat of HIV, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) among adolescents, has
become a life threatening issue and measures should be taken. The Center for Disease Control issued a
survey stating that, 31.9 percent of ninth grade girls and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her essay she states that, teens who are exposed to risks need and deserve the best means possible
for protecting themselves: knowledge, skills, and access to latex condoms (Clark 117). I strongly
agree with her point that something must be done, and that teens deserve the best possible protection.
Condoms should be made readily available to adolescents, but schools are not the place to distribute
them. School is a place for education; students should be taught about the dangers of sex, and be
informed about where they can receive condoms. There are numerous free health clinics and similar
places that readily provide free condoms to adolescents. If condoms were provided in the schools, I
think that it would be made as more of a joke than a serious issue. Distributing condoms in schools
makes it seem like sex is OK, which is not the message we want to convey to our youth.
Another point that Clark addresses is changing the culture of our youth. In order to accomplish this,
she believes that the school should be a place where students can openly talk about sex, and also

The Half-Brothers by Elizabeth Gaskell Essays
The Half Brothers by Elizabeth Gaskell This story, The Half Brothers, written by Elizabeth Gaskell is
set in 19th century Cumberland. This story is based on some of things that happened in Mrs Gaskell s
life such as her losing her children. The half brothers are Gregory and his younger brother whose
name we never find out. Their mother loses her first husband and she re marries William Preston.
Their mother, Helen, dies in childbirth leaving Gregory to be brought up by his stepfather. Even
though he had been badly treated by him, Gregory shows throughout that he is a true Christian. Mrs
Gaskell in this story makes Helen into a very sympathetic character. The very first sentence My

Most of the stock had already died by this time. There was another child coming . This means that she
cannot work. Also because she has another child to look after. Helen cannot afford to look after
another child. She was sad and sorry . This alliteration emphasises her despair with the soft sounding s
on both of the words. She is unable to have help from neighbours because she is on a remote farm and
has no neighbours. She only has her sister to help her. A dreary winter she must have had in her
lonesome dwelling are dragged out to make it seem longer and make us feel sorry for her. These are
the emotive words. There is no one for miles around so she cannot go begging for money. She is
severely in debt and there is nothing she can do apart from her sister s help. Sympathy by this time is
growing very deep for Helen and then there is one last blow and this is when her little baby daughter
is struck ill with scarlet fever and she dies in Helens arms. She did not cry this makes us feel that she
has had too much stress in her life and that she cannot take any more and she cant cry. The death of
the baby girl is emphasised by the dialect that is used such as wee lassie . This emphasises the fact that
she is small and the ie on the end of lassie makes her seem even smaller because lass is just a girl and
lassie is a small girl. Helen

Traumatic Experiences And Depression Among Vietnamese...
Since Indochinese refugees started arriving in the United Sates, the main concern have been voiced
about consequences of the war and their experiences on their mental health. There haven t been any
studies that examined the complex relationships between psychological traumatic experiences and
depression among Vietnamese Americans. Studies on the mental health status of people after traumatic
experiences in war, Nazi concentration camps, and natural disasters found that traumatic social and
natural events are related to various forms of psychological problems among the victims (Tran, 1993).
Most refugees fled from Vietnam to the United States to get away from the horrifying tragic.
According to (Kunz, 1973), refugees are pushed out of their country, whereas immigrants are pulled
away from their homeland. Vietnamese respondents in this study were conceived and grew up amid
the war, and a significant number of them were specifically included in battle or invested years in
death camps, either in comrade detainment facilities or in refugee camps. While others witnessed
violent death of family members, or experienced rape, robbery, or starvation as they escaped from
Vietnam.
Psychological trauma is a result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security,
making you feel helpless in a dangerous world. As if, Depression (depressive disorder) is an illness

Sexual Selection and Sexual Conflict Essay
Charles Darwin characterized sexual selection as variance in the number of mates . The purpose of
sexual selection is to perfect the secondary sexual characteristics, which are the morphological
differences between the two sexes. On the other hand the primary sexual characteristics are the
differences between the reproductive genital systems of the two sexes. Sexual selection instead of
adapting the individual to the environment, like natural selection, it does enhance traits involved in
mate acquisition. Sexual conflict, on the other hand, occurs when males and females have different
reproductive interests and deriving from the urge of sexual reproduction. This is boosted by
promiscuity when males and females have several partners. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In 1990 Barette and Vandal studied sparring in caribou. From the 713 matches between males of
different antler sizes, 90% of the time males with the smaller antlers retreated. Also there is the
intersexual selection, which is also known as the female choice. There are three cases of intersexual
selection. Firstly, the female choice co evolved with trait exaggeration, otherwise called Fisher s
process. Secondly, the choosy females gain direct benefit and thirdly, females are choosy because of
sensory bias. Fisher s process is divided in two phases. At phase one, the female preferences evolve
because the trait that they prefer is favored by natural selection and as a result, their offspring are more
likely to have the beneficial trait. When there is a distinct difference in a species, which is linked with
the selective advantage, the females tend to choose the males that clearly distinguish the difference
that is to be observed and they will prefer the most advantageous type. As for phase two, once the
female preferences exist, males with the specific trait are more fit, which is both a natural and a sexual
selection advantage. As a result there will be an increasing selective force favoring stronger
preferences and more extreme traits. The runaway process will eventually stop, when there is no
longer genetic variation for further trait or preference exaggeration or when the viability costs of the
trait, balance sexual

Integrated Marketing Communications Is Defined As A...
According to Ang (2014), Integrated Marketing Communications is defined as a research based,
audience focused, communication planning process that aims to execute a brand communication
program over time and this is achieved by coordinating different communication disciplines and
integrating the creative content across different media. The aim is to achieve short term financial gain
and long term brand equity. Since IMC is all about using different Media vehicles, the most effective
one is Television; such as Reality television shows which has many benefits and contributions
especially when it comes to creating a successful brand. There are two reality television shows that
has been analysed from the first part of this assignment and they are: Keeping up with the Kardashians
and My Kitchen Rules, which I will then discuss how it relates to branding.
Brand equity is important to create and maintain as it is an intangible asset of added value as well as
goodwill that will then result from the favourable image, impressions of differentiation and the
strength of consumer attachment to brand name, company name or trademark. The stronger the equity
the better it positions the company as well as its brand which is only often reinforced through
advertising or even sponsoring. For example, Breville appliances command good quality kitchen
appliances and represents higher price than the other brands as it is being used by the contestants of
My Kitchen Rules. In other words, it is the

The stationary phase will absorb or slow down different components of the tested solution to different
degrees creating layers as the components of the solution are separated. Chromatography was invented
by the Russian botanist, Mikhail Tsvet. Chemists use this process to identify unknown substances by
separating them into the different molecules that make them up.
(c) Suppose I melted a grape (purple) popsicle and ran a chromatogram of the resulting substrate.

Answer: Once the chromatogram has been completed and is ready to be measured and calculated, on
the plate that was used to perform the chromatogram you should see where the red and blue have
completely separated. The red food coloring dye should be lower on the plate than the blue food
coloring dye.

Gradually creating a feeling of getting car of their own ideas. As we go through the sales details after
the implementation of new customization its crystal clears that even though external factors increase
the customer won t hesitate to buy his customized car. ANALYSIS: BMW was established in1918 as
an engine supplier for military aircraft. Their first production of car was at 1928 and at 60 s the
company entered a strong product line. In 1970 s the famous BMW 3, 5 and 7 series were introduced.
Till 2007 the sales was having a small progress but when the global financial crisis and the increase in
the cost of fuel decreased the sales of BMW (30% decrease and 50% decrease in sales of SUV). BMW
had an evolutionary approach on marketing and advertising. Its sales increases from 2000 that is by
introducing Efficient Dynamics Concept which means that all BMW s Group have lower emission.
One of the main success of BMW was the introduction of the concept KOVP, or Customer oriented

Western Culture And Its Influence On Modern Culture
Institutions, or groups or societies formed from similar interests and ideas, have become a
commonality in modern society. Politics, acadamia, even specialized groups to the minutia of specific,
singular beliefs or ideas dominate today s American society and these examples barely begin to
scratch the surface of institution s influence on America. This is not to say that the prevalence of these
institutions is not specific to the United States culture, but present in all cultures labeled as inherently
western. The concept of institution is an idea constructed by humans, and as a human construct, the
idea must have implemented itself successfully into human culture to be present today. Western
culture (today primarily North America and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a religion still practiced today, the text s influence on people is clear. An institution requires a
unifying factor between those involved. The Torah explicitly details the Jewish ideology and beliefs
something needed in any successful institution. After the creation of this text, the unifying concepts
that can result from an idea are present. Without this unification, this text s influence and practice
would not occur today. What can be inferred from this text is the actual creation of institutions that
support the practice or action of a single group or people. This constructed idea of an institution is
crucial in the development of western society because it allows for positions of power to arise from
said belief, and these positions of power eventually become the most influential. The most important
text in the development of Western Society, The Bible, is like previous examples. The development
from myth (or hereafter religion), to organized grouping, to a mode of power can be summed up in the
influence of The Bible. Somewhere throughout history, an individual or group realized the influence
of a religion on a group of people. In getting a group to believe something as explicit and detailed as
this text is, having these followers support an agenda that, on the surface parallels their beliefs, but in
reality is a power ploy by those in high positions, creates an environment that breeds influence and

Incorporated in 1889 as the Standard Oil Company (Indiana), the company s first challenge was to build a refinery in Whiting, Indiana, specially designed to handle high sulphur crude oil from a field near Lima, Ohio. In 1912, a year after dissolution of the Rockefeller Trust, company scientist William Burton and his colleague, Robert Humphreys, received a patent for the thermal cracking process that doubled the yield of gasoline from a barrel of crude oil, while also boosting its octane rating. Perplexity In The Meno Pérez 1 Ana Pérez Professor Sara Solorzano Philosophy 16 December 2014 Plato s Ethics: An Overview This document explores the meaning of human life, its purpose, what it serves for and also what factors affect them and how. We analyze Plato s expressions and thoughts about what makes us humans. From virtues to building a perfect city, Plato tries to explain in different occasions the morality behind humans. He is focused on understanding the why and how can humans reach their highest potential with the given resources such as nature and others. Plato begins explaining the beginning. The search for knowledge, the understanding what are things and what are their purposes. As argued in the Meno, perplexity is an intermediary stage towards knowledge. As we know, with knowledge comes everything else. It is explained also that in order to want to seek knowledge, one must possess virtues, like courage. Courage is the one to push you into knowing something. These are the things that will drive someone into knowing the basis of everything. For example a square, in order to do one or understand it one must know what are lines, points, etc. Next, begins a discussion on what justice and injustice are, a virtue or not, whether they make us happy or not. ... • 5. Pregnancy And The Birth Of A Fetus Since 1955, ultrasounds have been performed on pregnant women to search for imperfections and abnormalities during gestation. 1 These ultrasound machines use non ionizing sound waves to produce images of the growing fetus. When they re used in moderation and for diagnostic purposes only, they re considered safe. However, different studies have shown that there are possible harmful affects that can come from obstetric sonography that directly affect the fetus when they re improperly used. There are a variety of types of ultrasounds that an expecting woman can receive throughout the duration of a pregnancy. All of these types of ultrasounds use sound waves and have the same goal in tracking the gestational age of a fetus, growth and development, placental location, to detect irregularities that may occur throughout a woman s pregnancy, and to monitor amniotic fluid volume levels. 1 Obstetric sonography can affect a fetus by creating mechanical vibrations, heat, and air bubbles in the fluids of the baby s body. When women receive ultrasounds for medical use, they are performed by trained technologists, supervised by doctors, and the principle of ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) is applied during the exams. After the development of ultrasounds, people started to use them for entertainment purposes and to have a souvenir picture of the baby.2 These unnecessary exams were administered by untrained, unlicensed technicians, and often without a doctor s supervision. 3 ... Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and then sold to Facebook s owner Mark Zuckerburg for $1 billion in cash and stock. Just in three months Instagram gained one million users. Most apps that are on the top charts paid tons of money to get there, but the photo sharing app, Instagram, easily sparked its way to the top without spending a dime (Cutler). Although Instagram is incredible in its accomplishments and is now worth about 35 billion dollars, there are some policies that the average user would like to change about the app. When analyzing the popular app, the sharing of user s photos to third parties, the inactive username policy, and the usage of device identifiers have played a major role in the lost of many Instagram users in the past few years. Background/Issues Although the issue regarding Instagram selling its users photos to third parties happened two years ago, this was one of Instagram s biggest issues since its establishment. According to the CNET article on cnet.com, Declan McCullagh wrote, Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public outcry. I don t know where I found the quote, probably on my endless hours scrolling through the internet, but it was my favorite quote and it somewhat applied to my life. You would expect a teenage girl like me to go to an endless amount of parties... or maybe actually go outside once in awhile, but that was just not me. I felt like I had been shoved down the garbage disposal, and I was in tiny chunks where all my tiny nerves were being fried by electricity. Franz Kafka s A Hunger Artist And The Metamorphosis Self insertion, a literary device in which a character who is the real author of a work of fiction appears as a character within fiction, either overtly or in disguise. Imagine yourself being unable to obtain the recognition of your parents your whole life and leaving this world as a nobody. The writings of Franz Kafka not only spoke of the absurdity of life, but also about who he was. They told about what type of human being he was, and how he was feeling. You can see this in both of his well known short stories, A Hunger Artist and The Metamorphosis. I believe that there is a personal link between author and character and that it can be found in most of his works. Franz Kafka was born on July 3, 1883, in Prague. The writer grew up in a middle class Jewish family and studied law at the University of Prague. By the time Kafka was six he had lost his two younger brothers, they were only infants, leaving Franz as the only boy in the family. This tragedy shaped the family for the rest of their lives. Growing up Kafka s relationship with his parents suffered, neither of them supporting his desire of become a writer. Hermann Kafka, Franz s father, was a forceful man and made it apparent throughout the household. Kafka s father had a profound impact on both Kafka s life and writing. • 11. Symbolism Of Humankind In Lord Of The Flies By William... Humankind is an imperfect species with many flaws. Author William Golding shows these in the novel Lord of the Flies. It is shown through a group of schoolboys crashing on an island without any adults. Without the rules and constraints of civilization the children show humanity s true nature and raw instinct. The imperfections of man are shown through symbols in the novel such as the scar on the island, the beast, and the schoolboys who crashed onto the island. The first symbol that is used in the novel was the scar on the island. The scar was where the plane crash landed, leaving a destructive mark on the island. He looked up and down the scar. And this is what the tube done. This quote explains that the scar was made by the fuselage crashing and ripping into the earth leaving a giant gash on the island. The scar symbolizes mankind s destruction and how humans can destroy nature just by entering it. The island was untouched and resembled paradise, at the same time in the outside world a gruesome war was occurring. The carnage and havoc that reigned over society is also evident on the island. There was a clean slate for them to build a society without violence, but it did not happen because of destruction being a natural tendency of mankind. The scar foreshadowed the destruction the island. During the children s stay, the island suffered through the children s wrath. In Beowulf , the unknown author paints a typical yet magnificent tale that is one of the great epic chronicles of the Middle Ages. Like the poems of Homer, Beowulf possesses terrible monsters, men with supernatural powers, the search for glory, and deadly defeats. With each mention of a character, the father is also interjected (Beowulf, son of Ecgtheow or Wiglaf, son of Weohstan). Destiny initially comes into play when Beowulf arrives at the shores of Denmark and is unknown to the guards. King Hrothgar proclaims, I used to know [Beowulf] when he was a young boy. / His father before him was called Ecgtheow (lines 372 3). Clearly, family ties are necessary to succeed in the world of kings. Beowulf is immediately given leave to enter the country and to follow up an old friendship (line 376) because the King is certain that the young man is destined to be a great warrior in Denmark. Certainly, past conquests and victories play a part in Beowulf s renown, but ancestry is initially more impressive. Beowulf s destiny is, therefore, partly determined by his father s feats and legacy. The opportunities given to the now famous warrior are a result of the powerful family that he comes from. Thus, destiny plays a prophetic part in shaping Beowulf s future. While destiny and fate are related, in Beowulf the two ideas play different roles. People in the developing world are more closely connected to the environment than those in developed countries. Fast forward 40,000 years and fishing has shifted from a necessity to big business, wiping out the majority of oceanic resources and setting the marine apocalypse for the year 2048, when ecologists predict all species of fish will have gone extinct. You would think people that took the picture would take more than one. Also, why are all of the picture so blurry. Another, reason people do not believe in aliens because they are not in the bible. We have been researching for like hundreds of years and we haven t found anything so how do we know that we will ever find anything. It is also unlikely people have the habitat it takes to live like we do. How come all aliens look the exact same. Our universe is over 100 billion years old why would other life wait for us. • 27. Fairytales In The Bloody Chamber By Angela Carter Fairy tales often show that it is the boys and men who are the ones allowed to go on adventures and save the day, Angela Carter changes that by making it that anyone even girls and women, can share those same curious, adventurous, and even heroic characteristics. The term is mainly used for stories with origins in European tradition and, at least in recent centuries, mostly relates to children s literature. Fairytales have been around for a long time, starting off as oral stories later to be collected by the Grimm brothers in the early 19th century. It is normally males that would gather fairy tales; although women, especially elderly ones, were the best sources of fairy tales in many of the cultures. It is a characteristic of fairy tales ... An example of this is in the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, just by guessing Rumpelstiltskin s name breaks the bargain made for the first born child. In The Bloody Chamber, we know that the first person narrator is female, but her name is unmentioned. This is difference between the original story and Angela Carter s is in the original the wife is not addressed other than wife whereas as in the Bloody Chamber is called by multiple names, but mostly pet names by her husband. She is called Madame by workers at the castle and with some diminutive words such as My little nun, Baby (17), My little love, and My child (18) by her husband. The female narrator labels herself by some words such as I, the orphan, the châtelaine and I, the little music student (13), a little girl (18), child (18), and his bride (13). It seems that she adopts the adjectives attributed to her by the outer world. On the other hand, the man she marries to holds an ancestral name of The Marquis (36) which symbolizes mastery and power, and the heroine calls the Marquis, my husband and my purchaser (15). Having these names in the story not only gives the story a fable feel but also shows the power dynamic between the narrator and the Marquis. The main character goes on to describe how the Marquis looks at her like a house wife would look at meat at the supermarket, the narrator compares herself to a female figure in an etching described as a lamb chop (17). She is a female soccer player at Cornwall University, until the school cuts her soccer team off from the after school extracurricular activities program. After the sexist coach refuses her suggestion of joining the male soccer team, she impersonates her brother and tryouts for the soccer team at Illyria. She believes the only way to attest her capability is if she is unable to join the male soccer team at Cornwall is to beat them. Viola s character would be a negative realistic representation of women, because she s an athletic woman who remains attractive in the male gaze perspective. In the male gaze we would expect her to be fragile, delicate and helpless woman rather than goal oriented and driven woman in order for her to remain attractive to the male audience and characters in the film. Viola s devotion to soccer presents her as possessing too much boyishness to her mother and other adult females in the debutante society. She lacks several feminine mannerisms. For instance, while Duke and Justin are physically fighting over her, she jumps on Justin s back and later removes popcorn from her top in an unladylike fashion, of which she is reminded by her mother. Minority applicants could now say they were disadvantaged so they were put in the special pool which would make it easy for them to get into the medical program. The Treatment Of Bibi Haldar By Jhumpa Lahiri This excerpt from The Treatment of Bibi Haldar by Jhumpa Lahiri has multiple themes, but one that really stands out above others is the effects of ignorance. One would disagree with my choice of theme, but one must not be so rash with their disagreement, first you must look at the writing techniques and the choice of words that Lahiri uses in the excerpt. The ignorance in which I talk about circulates around Bibi s family. If Lahiri describes her events in chronological order, which I believe she does, then we can see that in the first paragraph, the family first expresses their ignorance of this poor girl s illness when they contact priests, religion, etc. in order to heal their daughter instead of official medical specialists. A tragedy is a tragedy, and at the bottom, all tragedies are stupid. Give me a choice and I ll take A Midsummer Night s Dream over Hamlet every time. Any fool with steady hands and a working set of lungs can build up a house of cards and then blow it down, but it takes a genius to make people laugh. The combination of William Shakespeare, Horace Walpole, and Steven King run together to speak on the topic of comedies. We as human beings, being social creatures, have a need to laugh. We find many things humours, and there are many types of comedies, as well as uses for the comedies we make. There are many different forms of comedy from many different time periods which all fall within three overarching sections; verbal, physical, and literary. The first of these, literary, takes different forms over time. The majority can be described as Graeco Roman, Shakespearean, and new age satire. Each of these categories could continue to expand with the different stylistic elements of each, but we will explore the major points of each. The Greeks and the Romans were the first to discover many of the things we use day to day, including the begins of comedies. The Graeco Roman style comedies took two major forms of comedy. • 34. The Proposal For Jewish Proselytization And John Crocker... One can draw interesting parallels between the proposal for Jewish proselytization and John Crocker s biography of Samuel Johnson. To quote the remarks of one reviewer of Crocker s book, the merits of Mr. Crocker s performance are on a par with those of a certain leg of mutton on which Dr. Johnson dined, while travelling from London to Oxford, and which he, with characteristic energy, pronounced to be as bad as bad could be, ill fed, ill killed, ill kept, and ill dressed. Similarly, the aforementioned proposal is ill conceived, ill advised, and unfortunately, illness inducing. It bears mentioning that the ardent advocates of Jewish proselytization are not pious Haredim men who spend their days poring over the timeless texts of tradition nor are they of the Modern Orthodox persuasion, a coterie who attempts the Sisyphean task of synthesizing values both ancient and modern. No, these zealous purveyors of Judaism have emerged from the lonely pews and desolate temples of the more progressive Reform and Conservative movements, a truth which is acutely revelatory. Salvific imperialism is a notion foreign to both Judaism and a historically conscious conservatism. After the death of Libby Zion, a patient who died after entering a hospital and the intern on the clock not responding in time due to exhaustion, the ACGME ratified a law which only allowed an intern to work a maximum of 80 hours a week with the same amount of pay and to introduce the use of night floats. The initial response to the new regulations was that the three hospitals which Kellogg studied rejected the laws due to the old system created by the senior surgeons. With the new regulations, the senior surgeons feared that the reduced number of hours the interns were required to work would reduce the experience the interns would have on the job and this would make them bad surgeons. The introduction of night floats would threaten the continuity of care for the patients. This would then threaten the values and ideas of the old system. This rise in tension caused an unstable environment, between the defenders and reformers. In the first chapter, Kellogg describes the day in life of an intern. In her essay she states that, teens who are exposed to risks need and deserve the best means possible for protecting themselves: knowledge, skills, and access to latex condoms (Clark 117). I strongly agree with her point that something must be done, and that teens deserve the best possible protection. Condoms should be made readily available to adolescents, but schools are not the place to distribute them. School is a place for education; students should be taught about the dangers of sex, and be informed about where they can receive condoms. There are numerous free health clinics and similar places that readily provide free condoms to adolescents. If condoms were provided in the schools, I think that it would be made as more of a joke than a serious issue. Distributing condoms in schools makes it seem like sex is OK, which is not the message we want to convey to our youth. Another point that Clark addresses is changing the culture of our youth. In order to accomplish this, she believes that the school should be a place where students can openly talk about sex, and also receive information on the subject. Sexual selection instead of adapting the individual to the environment, like natural selection, it does enhance traits involved in mate acquisition. Firstly, the female choice co evolved with trait exaggeration, otherwise called Fisher s process. Secondly, the choosy females gain direct benefit and thirdly, females are choosy because of sensory bias. Fisher s process is divided in two phases. At phase one, the female preferences evolve because the trait that they prefer is favored by natural selection and as a result, their offspring are more likely to have the beneficial trait. When there is a distinct difference in a species, which is linked with the selective advantage, the females tend to choose the males that clearly distinguish the difference that is to be observed and they will prefer the most advantageous type. As for phase two, once the female preferences exist, males with the specific trait are more fit, which is both a natural and a sexual selection advantage. As a result there will be an increasing selective force favoring stronger preferences and more extreme traits.
