Speech On Amelia Earhart
I will be talking about the importance of Amelia Earhart. I didn t know a ton about her, except that she
was the first to fly a plane across the ocean. Big whoop. After I did some research I came to find out
how actually important she was/is and how important flying that plane was. Now I want to share that
information with you. Our world needs to accept change and the fact that men and women are equally
able to make this world a better place. Women have made a great impact on our world today, for
example, Amelia Earhart. Most of our lives, we ve only heard accomplishments that men have made
but, we need to realize that women play a huge part too and can do just as much. Just because men are
cast as the dominant figures, doesn t mean the ladies are just there on the side and Amelia Earhart
proved this. Today I would like to tell you about Amelia s early life, her accomplishments, and the
impact she has on us today.
To start off, Amelia Earhart saw her first plane at a state fair when she was 10. She didn t find planes
interesting until she went to a stunt flying exhibition. On December 28, 1920, a pilot named Frank
Hawks gave her a ride that would forever change her life. After she was up in the air, she knew she
wanted to fly. She had ideas that were strong, challenging, eye opening, but she was not going to give
up. Amelia was a graduate from Hyde Park High School and then attended Ogontz, a girl s finishing
school. In the middle of her second year, she had left to

The Effects Of Social Media On Teenagers
The Social Media Effect
When you were a teenager, did social media impact your life? If not, it certainly has had an impact on
the teenagers of America today. Social media has been around for a long time. There are many
applications for social media, some of which are Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook. With the rapid
evolution of social media, people believe that social media is impacting teenagers in a negative way.
However, some believe that there are positive effects. The negative effects of social media on
teenagers include poor student performance, lack of sleep, and increased vulnerability. However,
before any of these arguments can be talked about, it is important that people know the history of
social media. The development of social media started in the 1950 s with commercial computers. This
led to the creation of personal computers, which paved the way for the development of e mail. One of
the key developments of social media is the cell phone. They evolved into Iphones, which include
many features such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. These allow people to communicate
anywhere at any time. The first recognizable social network using the same definition as today s
Facebook and MySpace sites was SixDegrees.com, launched in 1997. (Amidon Lusted). From this
website, MySpace evolved. Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson created MySpace. They wanted this
site to have fewer rules, and they wanted people to communicate and share music. MySpace led to the

New England And Southern Colonies Dbq Essay
New England and Southern Colonies developed differently for several reasons. A few of the reasons
why the regions were so diverse include; religion, climate, and slavery. The religion caused the
colonies to conversed use to different beliefs. Climate made the region s live opposite lifestyles.
Lastly, slavery made the colonies unique from each other because it showed the difference in job
opportunities and amount of labor.
Religion makes New England and Southern Colonies very distinctive from each other. In the letter, A
model of Christian charity, it informs readers about New England s religion. The letter states ...shall
shame the faces of many God s worthy servants, and cause their prayers to be turned into curses upon
us. (Doc A). This part of the paper is making the point that if they messed up then God would put a
curse into them. The letter shows that puritans were a perfect group of people, and everyone should
act and live the way they did. (Doc A). New England was mostly made up of puritans. They felt the

In the graph The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History compares the amount of slave
population in the Southern Colonies and in New England. It is about enslaved people on the colonies,
1650 1710. (Doc. I) The Southern Colonies had about 27,000 more slaves than New England. (Doc I).
The reason why the south had more slaves is because they farmed, on the other hand, New England
was a prosperity based on industry. On the map The New England Colonies, it provides information
on what products were made there. New England mainly produces furs, fish, cattle, ships, lumber, and
iron based off of the map. (Doc. J) The postpone who live in New England enjoy/ want the jobs that
are available there, so there is less need for slaves. Slaves affected the religions life because it was

Ethics of Penn Square and Dow Corning Essay
Ethics of Penn Square and Dow Corning
Ethics of Penn Square Bank and the Dow Corning Bankruptcy Penn Square Bank: What were the
ethical pressures on the firm concerning documentation, credit extension, and revenue recognition that
lead to the final collapse? What should have been done to reduce or offset these pressures?
Penn Square Bank was a small commercial bank in Oklahoma City which made high risk financial
loans during the late 1970s in the oil boom. The bank ultimately collapsed during the early 1980s due
to their financing practices. The bank was overestimating and valuing its customer s gas and oil
reserves that let at that time to fund a bigger credit line. In addition, the bank didn t request clients to

Dow Corning Corporation was founded in 1943 as a jointly owned enterprise by The Dow Chemical
Company and Corning Incorporated to develop the potential of silicone materials. Dow Corning s
principal businesses were silicone materials and polycrystalline silicon.
In the early 1960 s Dow Corning supplied Texas plastic surgeons Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin
with silicone for their medical implant device research. Gerow and Cronin, using Dow Corning
silicone, invented the first silicone breast implant as a device to aid women who had undergone
mastectomies. At that time, the Food and Drug Administration had no regulations governing
implantable devices. Companies like Dow Corning had to determine the safety of devices on their
own. The surgeons conducted clinical trials of the implant prior to product introduction in 1964. In the
next several years, the implant grew popular for cosmetic surgery as well as reconstructive, and Dow
Corning cornered both markets. Between 1960s and the mid 1990s, about two million women
nationwide have received breast implants, most of them for cosmetic reasons. However, some women
have started to complain that the implants have ruptured, allowing gel to leak into the breast cavity
and migrate to other

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Alliances
Significant developments have occurred in the field of air transport. A large number of countries made
remarkable progress in liberalizing international air transport regulations, and became involved in full
market access arrangements. At the same time, the airline industry underwent a major shift and saw
the forging alliances and mergers between companies in order to consolidate their presence in a
market environment characterized by strong competition. (Icao.int, 2013)
Alliances between airlines have become a dominant feature in air transport, and a new global
phenomenon unfolding relatively quickly through multiple collaborative business arrangements.

Disadvantages of Alliances are
In spite of their major advantages, airline alliances were criticized on a number of points including:
Alliances may not respect antitrust rules. Thereby exclude certain companies from the market, and
promote fair competition standards.
Due to their management of many key points and their competitive and marketing powers, alliances
could lead to the downfall of some companies that have to compete as low cost companies.
Alliances have grown radically, making their partnerships increasingly complex. (Icao.int, 2013)
Here are few more different disadvantages of the Alliances
Weaker management involvement or less equity stake.
Fear of market insulation due to local partner s presence.
Less efficient communication.
Poor resource allocation.
Difficult to keep objectives on target over time.

success, with the help of his beloved family never undermined. Provided, the Zamperini family played
an instrumental role filled with unwavering support and dedication to their dear Louis throughout his
great feats and strenuous journeys. Pete Zamperini was the older brother of Louis, and while being

principal that Louie craved attention, but had never won it in the form of praise, so he sought it in the
form of punishment. If Louie were recognized for doing something right, Pete argued, he d turn his
life around (13). Growing up, no one was completely sure on whether or not Louis would amount to
anything, but with the help of Pete he became one of the greatest runners in the world. Training
constantly, Louis was pushed past his limits by Pete to achieve monumental heights in his running
career. Pete herded him out to train every day and rode his bicycle behind him, whacking him with a

The Diesel Hybrid Combustion Engine Essay
The Diesel Hybrid Combustion Engine
Two main types of engines powering everyday machinery are diesel and gasoline internal combustion
engines. Both vary on efficiency levels, but are still effective. Diesel engines have high efficiency
levels, such as producing great amount of torque at very low rpms. They are also known for their fuel
efficient behavior and capability to produce low emissions.
Their capability to produce power at an efficient rate with little wear on the engine, this makes these
engines ideal for hybrid integration. Hybrid integration takes a typical engine and combines it with an
electric generator and motor, with the application of other electrical systems applied. Allowing the ...

These tests represent the percentage of green house gases that the engine will produce over its
lifetime. The results are as follows: the gasoline combustion engine is 88%, the diesel hybrid engine is
56% (Weiss 29).
The MIT testing and research went into much more detail besides fuel efficiency and emission release.
These areas are still are very important in the mind of the everyday consumer.
Current Developments:
The diesel hybrid idea is now being applied to several different applications. It ranges from road, to
water, and railroad. In each scenario the applications are the similar but the designs are different.
In Vancouver, Canada, RailPower Technologies has designed a hybrid locomotive, the Green Goat,
which utilizes diesel fuel and electric motors. The basic design started with removing all the original
engine parts and replacing them with a 6.0L Daewoo diesel engine and 20 volt lead acid batteries
(Siuru 1). This design uses the diesel engine, which acts as a generator to charge the batteries. The
batteries are then used to power the locomotive. Batteries propel the locomotive leaving more empty
space under the hood. The result of all this is: ability to create a smaller hood increasing overall
visibility for locomotive engineers, fuel economy improvement of 35%, and a 90% reduction of
overall emissions (Siuru 1).

Should the Internet Replace the Book As the Chief Tool of...
At present, the Internet and other technology are well developed and keep improving. People use those
new tools to do everything, and try hard to make human life easier and more perfect. From business to
finances; industry to entertainment; services to education, the use of the Internet has increased and
become more mainstream. Some people believe that the Internet and other electronic technology can
replace all kind of jobs that humans do, including teaching students with screens and keyboards
instead of books. They emphasize that the Internet can help people interact to each other beyond the
barrier of distance, so books are somehow not necessary in human lives. However, in my opinion, this

. . . all it needs is light, a human eye, and a human mind (2008, ¶ 2). On the other hand, generally
speaking, the publishing process for the book is more stringent and credible than online resources. As
people realize the fact that the Internet is so open and free that everyone can write anything on the
web, a great amount of misleading information have been circulated for perusal around the network. It
is a great challenge to distinguish which of them is true or credible; however, information from books
is basically, generally believable. One of the reasons for this is that people can easily find out who the
author and publisher are of a book. In contrast, an article from a web page may have trouble to prove
its credibility. In short, the Internet cannot always provide valuable message and information that
respects to intellectual property rights. Therefore, people should keep using book as the chief tool of
learning. Another important reason why the Internet and other technology should not replace the book
is that the use of the Internet and other technology may be a travers of developing social skills. It has
been confirmed by sociologists and anthropologists that the face to face communication between
people is too important to be ignored in the society. To be honest, it is

When the Spanish arrived at the Incan borders in 1528, the Incan empire spanned a great distance,
from Ancs Maya, Blue River, in Southern Columbia to the Maule River in Chile. The Inca Empire
originated from a tribe based in Cuzco under the rule of Pachacuti, the Incan leader from 1438 to
1471/1472, Cuzco soon ended up being the capital of the Empire. Pachacuti s would later rule the

The Inca believed that harmony between the relationships of the human being, nature and gods was

On the 16th of November 1532, while the natives were in a celebration in Cajamarca, the Spanish
captured Atahualpa by surprise during the ensuing battle. When Huáscar was killed, the Spanish tried
and convicted Atahualpa of the murder, executing him by strangulation.
After the Spanish had risen to power and Atahualpa was executed, several of Atahualpa s generals
started rebelling against the Spanish. Quizquiz defended Cuzco from the Spaniards and Ruminahui
burned Quito instead of letting it fall into the enemies hands. Nevertheless, the Spanish remained in

The Benefit Of Bilingualism
Benefits of Bilingualism
In modern society, owning a place in the bilingual community is a special trait that allows for people
to have a true connection with one another. Bilingual is a term describing people who can speak more
than one language, and with more than 7000 languages inhibiting the world, the demand for bilingual
speakers is steadily growing (Okal, 2014). The number of people who speak more than one language
is increasing world wide as it is estimated that over a billion people in the world speak more than one
language fluently (Okal, 2014, p. 226). With that being said, some studies show that approximately
one in five Americans speak a language other than English at home, and that is just in the United
States alone. Moreover, the number of people who are able to speak more than one language is more
than likely going to exhibit an increase in the near future as well (Callahan Gandara, 2014). Along
with an increase in speakers, an increase in demand for these speakers will increase too. Bilingualism
opens the gateway to opportunities and benefits for people all around the world. However, many
people do not see the importance of increasing the spread of bilingual speakers throughout the nation s
communities. Without these bilingual speakers, various people and their neighborhoods would not be
able to communicate with one another because of the large language barrier sitting between them.
That is why being bilingual contains many benefits, including its brain improvements, career benefits,
and social skill boosts that will help out the speaker and his or her listeners in the long run.
Opposing Viewpoints
Of course, the art of being bilingual may display a few faults. One of these faults may be that both
languages can be present at the same time, which means that when a bilingual person hears a word, he
or she is able to make a connection with both languages based on the sounds. In a study by Dr. Viorica
Marian and Anthony Shook (2012), the authors explain how bilingual speakers connect sounds with
both languages. For instance, if an English and Spanish bilingual speaker hears the word to to, his or
her brain may instantly try to find words in both languages containing the sound to gives

September, 2012 1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of going public? Discuss the IPO
process. The Advantages of Going Public ï‚· Financial Benefit The financial benefit in the form of
raising capital is the most distinct advantage of going public. Capital can be used to fund research and
development, fund capital expenditure or even used to pay off existing debt. Moreover, once the
company is public, it has access to a new and liquid source of capital for any future needs it may have.

Investors can even attempt to unseat the management team by approving a different Board of
Directors if they feel that growth rates are below their expectations. IPO Process Once the decision to
go public is made the IPO process starts in full force. Typically the process from start to finish
normally lasts about 3 months. A brief process of implementing an IPO has been described below: ï‚·
Select an Investment Bank/ Underwriter The very first step in the IPO process is to select an
investment bank/ underwriter. Throughout the process, the underwriter is responsible for making the
issuance a success. Public offerings can be managed by one underwriter or by multiple managers. The
lead manager is responsible for assembling the group of underwriters. ï‚· Holding the all hands
meeting An all hands meeting should be attended by all members of the registration team company
management, independent auditors, accounting advisors, underwriters, the company s attorneys, and
the underwriters attorneys. The purpose of this initial organizational meeting is to discuss the nature of

Herding On The Major European Stock Exchange Index
2. Herding in European and U.K. markets a. Herding in Europe Feng and Seasholes (2004) wrote a
paper concerning the geographical delimitations of herding behaviour. They found that there is a
significant correlation of trading behaviour made by investors on stock markets and that this
correlation increases exponentially when investors are selling and buying within a specific
geographical area. Indeed, the study showed that trades, which can be either sales or purchases, are
deeply correlated when we split investors geographically. That correlates with the findings of Zhou
Lai (2009) who state that herding measures may differ in stocks according to geographic regions and
classification of industries. Stavroyiannis Babalos (2013) conducted an extremely relevant research
project by investigating the existence of herding behaviour on the major European Stock Exchange
Indexes. Indeed they gathered daily data during a period from the 15th of April 2005 to the 31st of
December 2012, and the results indicated that herding behaviour can be strongly identified in the
South European countries during the 2008 crisis period. When times are considered as normal periods
, models, mainly the rational asset pricing one, show that the distribution in cross sectional returns is
going to increase in the same trend as the absolute value of the returns on the markets, because
investors are usually trading with their diverse private information. Nonetheless, they also found that

Cider House Rules
The Cider House Rules The movie, The Cider House Rules, contains many different themes and
elements that could have been interpreted several different ways depending on the person and their
distinct preference. Some themes that are present within the movie include the dilemma of abortion,
the destiny of oneself, and other minor themes. These others which are spoken of, are not necessarily
main themes, but none the less remain pertinent and relevant to the way a movie goer views this film.
The debate was once dwelled upon in class concerning the appropriateness or the so called necessity
of certain portions of the film. These certain portions to which are being referred are as follows: first,
the sex scene in the woods; and second, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A fully clothed woman does not develop the same conclusion that was first intended by Manet. In
Classical art and in Renaissance art, nudity was relevant and useful to the expression of the idea that
the creator was trying to convey. Time has not changed the relevance or usefulness of nude art. First, it
must be stated that all nude art is not acceptable. Pornography and other forms should in no way be
considered as meaningful art. There is a certain underlying intelligence that cannot be separated from
nude art. Once this intelligence is removed, the nude art no longer holds any meaning or significance.
As can be seen from the previous evidence and other examples not mentioned, there are certain
patterns that art and artists have been following throughout the past years. One of the present
examples of the pattern is Cider House Rules. During the movie, there are two minor scenes which
present seemingly questionable material and which hold no meaning, but this is not the case. The first
scene, that needs clarification, is the sex scene in the woods. This scene involved the two characters,
Homer, played by Toby Macguire, and Candy, played by Charlize Theron. The second scene, that also
needs some clarification, was when Candy was laying on the bed only covered by a sheer white sheet.
Being sheer, the sheet allowed the viewer to see the complete naked figure of Candy. Some critics said
that these scenes did not

Securing and Protecting Information
Information is the most valuable commodity that individuals and global corporations use to grow
financially, economically, and independently. The protection and security of the information is
essential. One of the most vital foundations of protection information is the authentication process.
The authentication process is utilized to protect computer and network systems against various types
of security threats, such as password cracking tools, password dictionary attacks, mistreatment of user
access rights, and any potential unauthorized attacked. Understanding how to authenticate users and
the accessible information that is readily available on system networks can help prevent future issues
as well as provide insight into the developmental process for new systems. In addition, authentication
is simply determining whether someone or some machine is, in fact, who or what they declared there
to be. This process directly reflects on and correlates to the readiness and ease of access to information
and the protection of it.
Authentication is an essential tool of the standard security model layout for most designs from the
ground up to build off. Identifying the individual or machine that is trying to gain access to
information can be serious tasking, that companies do not have the luxury of relaxing on.
Authentication is similar but

How Do Elites Gain Power
Elites are people who get more of society s valuables, such as wealth and respect (Wasserman, pg. 4).
Power is the ability to influence another s behavior (Wasserman, pg. 3). It can be through rewards,
coercion, or persuasion. Legitimate power is power that is accepted as right (Wasserman, pg. 4) or
chose by using an agreed upon procedure (Wasserman, pg. 5), or authority deserving obedience
(Wasserman, pg. 5). Elites gain authority and authority gains power. People feel they should follow
authority. This power and authority control politics. If elites are expected to get the most and are the
ones who gain authority, etc., then the problem of economic inequality will affect the U.S. by lowering
the number of people with legitimate power.

A Short Horizon Model And The Relation Between The Stock...
In our analysis we used a short horizon model, meaning that we chose a window of 4 months before
the merger was announced and 4 months after the actual merger was completed, and studied the
security prices of the merging companies and their rivals over that time period. We then decided to use
a 3 day event window, CAR [ 1,1] first used by Andrade, Mitchell and Stafford (2001), in which the
event occurred on the 2nd day within that time frame. To do this, we used a market model to derive
the relationship between the stock price of the firms and our chosen index, the Standard and Poors
500. At this point we also examined changes in the R D intensity between companies that received a
second request and or complaint, and those that did not over the following 4 month period.
We then used regression analysis to elucidate the relationship between the different firms and the
reference index. Following this we then projected the normal returns using regression analysis for all
of the days which fell within the event window. We then took the expected returns and subtracted the
actual returns, and it was through this methodology that we could detect a relationship between
cumulative abnormal returns of the acquiror and the likelihood of receiving a second request. To
calculate the R D intensity, we take the cumulative R D for each firm in the 4 months prior to the
event and 4 months after the event and divide that by the their combined sales to reach a post merger

If you ask anyone in the SEC, they could list you several hundred strengths because it is almost like
they are perfect. Usually, a really good business has fantastic employees, and not to say players are
employees but same concept. Alabama has the very best players in the country. Since Saban has taken

the biggest contributor to the success of the program. However, these great athletes do not enter the

success of a program in the SEC. As we stated earlier, the weight room has been vital to the success of
the Tide. This is arguably the biggest strength of the program. Finally, one of the most substantial
reasons that recruits choose the college power house is because of the facilities. From the weight room

PTSD In Military
Mental health illness is a major issue that several United States systems faces daily. Mental illness can
contribute to high crime rates, suicide, drug addiction, mass shootings, prison overcrowding, and
several other problems. This paper will discuss and examine mental health issues as it develops and
result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the United States Military, and specifically how
PTSD can result in suicide among military service members. PTSD is commonly and well known to
infantry soldiers who were mostly deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq war between 2001 and 2003 due
to an overwhelming and challenging environment. The war in Afghanistan and the invasion of Iraq
conflicts, both have had a an actual impact on soldiers mental health. In addition, infantrymen are
most likely to experience at least one event as a minimum that may result in PTSD than any other
divisions in the military. According to Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Major Gary Wynn
provides statistics shows that 93 percent report coming under fire from artillery, rockets, and mortars.
91 percent say their unit has been attacked or ambushed. 87 percent say they know someone who has

Although PTSD is a somewhat new diagnosis that was related with military service members when it
was first introduced. During a period roughly from the end of the Second World War to the early
1990s, neither epidemiology, medical geography, nor medical sociology tended directly to study the
impact of the local social or physical environment on human health, according to Perspectives in
Medical Sociology (Brown 2008). PTSD was accepted everywhere when it was introduced as a
diagnosis in the early 1980s in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders (DSM III) of the American Psychiatric Association. Although PTSD diagnosis met largely
with skepticism by the public of the validity of the illness when first came out. Blair Wheaton and
Shirin Montazer provided a detailed definition of Traumatic Stress in their chapter of Stressors, Stress,
and Distress by stating, some stressors are thought to be so serious and so overwhelming in their
impact that we must give them a separate status to distinguish them from the usual class of events that
we designate as stressful. The most applicable term for these stressors is traumas (Wheaton Montazer
2010). In other words, PTSD is a complex mental disorder that develops in response to exposure to a
severe traumatic event that stems a cluster of symptoms. Being afflicted with the disorder is
debilitating and disrupt an individual s ability to function and perform the basic tasks. PTSD affects
3.5 percent of the U.S. adult population and approximately about 7 million Americans. Women
however are more likely to develop PTSD than men, and about 37percent of those cases are classified
as severe. Although PTSD can occur at any age, however the average is in the early 20s in person s

Globalization refers to the shift toward a more integrated and interdependent world economy. [Hill,
2003: pg6] South Africa provides a unique opportunity to observe the effects of globalization in that
the pre democratic period was a period of very little globalization, which can be contrasted with the
democratic period which has been characterised by rapid globalization. This sharp contrast emphasises
the effects that globalization has on a country.

The theory has implications for inequality within a country (Stopler Samuelson) and between
countries (Factor Price Equalization). The Stopler Samuelson theory, which builds on the Heckscher
Ohlin theory, predicts that with increased trade, the nation s abundant factor will gain and the scarce
factor will lose. In terms of income inequality within a country this means that by increasing trade the
lower income group, which control the abundant and cheap factor would realise an increase in income
and the higher income group controlling the scarce resources would see a fall in income. The assertion
by Stopler and Samuelson that increased trade would cause a decrease in inequality within a country is
not strongly supported by empirical evidence. A study by Dollar and Kraay [2001] shows that in the
period between 1960 and 1995, inequality has in fact slightly increased within countries that the
authors have termed globalizers .
The empirical evidence, however, does support the Factor Price Equalization theorem, which states
that the movement of factors between countries is replaced by trade in final goods, thus international
trade brings about an equalization of relative factor prices between countries. Dollar and Kraay [2001]
use empirical evidence to

The Definition Of Marriage And Family Relationships Essay
What is the definition of marriage in the Bible? Better yet what is the definition of family in the Bible?
In Scripture there are many families which could be studied in order to better answer this question, but
some of the most prominent choices are Abraham s family, David s family, and Solomon s family.
Each of these families in turn had their own sets of issues and problems, but there are also Biblical
solutions to these problems which shall be address through the course of this paper. But, before this is
done it is important to take note of what God s definitions are.
To begin, I will start by explaining what my understanding of marriage and family relationships
according to scripture are supposed to look like. Now, throughout both the Old Testament and New
Testament many commandments are given to both children and parents. For instance, one of the most
obvious commands given to children was, Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live
long in the land the Lord your God is giving you, (Ex. 20:12, New International Version (NIV)). To
honor someone means to treat him or her with respect and put them in a place of high esteem. Honor
and respect means a child should not speak back to their parents, they should not curse out their
parents in any way, and in general they should respect their parents wishes. But, going further than
this Colossians 3:20 says, Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord, (Col.
3:20, NIV).

salesman as his father had hoped, Biff decided to work with his hands the lifestyle which he new he

determination of Americans, but rather, it is achieved by the theft of self determination from Native
Americans. The line, When the earth became owned , tells the reader that Americans only enjoy
success because they took America, the land of success, from its original residents, the Native
Americans (Bruchac l. 22). The poem America and I mentions the freedom gained once people are
liberated from constant hunger. It says, For the first time in America, I d cease to be a slave of the
belly. I d be a creator, a giver, a human being (Yezierska l. 16 17). When freed from the constant need
to find food, men can put their efforts towards achieving their dreams. In addition to showing the
relations of freedom to the American dream, the authors gave ideas on how the American dream is
achieved.

How Characteristics Of Culture Maintain Capitalist Society
The purpose of this paper is to examine how characteristics of culture maintain capitalist society. I will
be using Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer s The culture industry: enlightenment as mass
deception, as the backbone of my analysis. This will be accomplished by assessing aspects of society
such as: monopoly capitalism, the entertainment industry and relevance to modern day society. This
paper argues that capitalism transformed culture into an ideological means of domination, and acts as
brainwashing tool over the masses.
Capitalism in The Concise Encyclopedia of Sociology is defined as: the system that provides for needs
and wants, animated by a particular ethos, coordinated and organized by establishing practices,
regulations, and laws, privileging particular types of knowledge. (Weber 1927, 47). Theodor Adomo
and Max Horkheimer created a term known as culture industry which is the commercial
commodification, and the mass production of pseudo culture by corporations (1947, p.29). The
creation of the culture industry resulted in the standardisation of the cultural form, which eliminated
an individual s ability to think critically. This occurred because of the greed that capitalism creates, the
heads of production firms mass produce cultural goods that are aimed at people s desires to increase
profitability. They argued that capitalism abandoned its liberal roots and began to monopolize
industries, thus creating monopoly capitalism.
In society, the culture

The State Of The Michigan Legislature
The Michigan legislature has been considering an iGaming bill that may result in Michigan being the
next US state to implement iGaming. While iGaming would be a new step for Michigan, the state
already has some experience with forms of gaming on the internet. Michigan was one of the first
states to implement an iLottery, and it proved to be a popular venture. Over 276,000 residents of
Michigan have opened iLottery accounts and hundreds of thousands of tickets are sold per day
through the iLottery. So might Michigan be fertile ground for full iGaming? And might it be another
step toward the US industry getting to the critical mass it needs in order to keep growing? The most
recent activity on the newly introduced Michigan bill, SB889, was on June 9, 2016, when the bill was
amended by, and cleared, a key Senate committee. It remains to be seen whether the legislation will
pass the full Legislature and be signed by the Governor this session, as in other states, iGaming bills
have often languished for several sessions before finally becoming a reality. So what will the
Michigan bill do if enacted? The bill would make internet gaming available to any person who is
either physically present in Michigan or is otherwise permitted by law to place a wager in Michigan,
which contemplates future liquidity sharing or compacts with other states. The Michigan Gaming
Control Board would have oversight over all internet gaming operations (as it currently does with

Creation Story Of Judith
Dairy foods were not popular until the middle ages when the story of Judith emerged. Judith was a
beautiful woman who saved her village from the Babylonians when their army was besieging the
village. Judith took it upon herself and bravely charmed her way into the enemy camp with a basket of
wine and cheese which she presented to the General. He ate and because the salty cheese made him
thirsty he drank more wine which was what Judith had hoped for. Once drunk Judith beheaded the
General and returned to her village with his head in a basket. The Babylonians then left and so it
became traditional from then onwards to eat dairy in honour of her bravery.

Although chicken, lamb and short ribs are often eaten, braised brisket remains a firm favourite. It is a

Curriculum Of American Education Essay
Malala Yousafzai, Bill Gates, Michelle Obama, and Emma Watson. What do all of these people have

In recent years, the United States has fallen behind other countries in education. While we might not
be seeing the immediate effects right now, but unless we make education more accessible and

In most other countries, children begin learning a second language very early in their schooling. Most
American schools, however, do not begin foreign language instruction until middle or high school. It
is clear to see the detrimental effects of this. If you ask anyone who took a foreign language class in
high school, chances are that they have retained none of it, unless they continued to study it in college.
This is because by the teenage years, it is much harder for the human brain to learn a second language.
If more schools began teaching a second language in elementary schools, it is more likely that students
will retain more language skills. As a result, more individuals will have the language skills required in

The Tipping Point By Malcolm Gladwell
Many phenomena exist within the world; whether it be the butterfly effect, the small world theory, or
even the laws of gravity, these entities shape reality. In the book The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell
analyzes an effect he coins the tipping point . The tipping point essentially is the point at which small,
seemingly insignificant changes become significant enough to cause a large and often times important
change . Throughout the text of this novel, Gladwell explores this notion more in depth; he utilizes
real world examples such as the re emergence of Hush Puppies, a popular footwear item, and dissects
the epidemic of the syphilis outbreak in Baltimore, Maryland in order to achieve this purpose. The

His ability to make relationships and acquire information made him the best person to take the role as
initial adopter. The qualities of Paul Revere allowed him to initialize a complete cascade in his
network of early American settlers during his Midnight Ride . The final connection between The
Tipping Point and diffusion in relation to the Law of the Few deals with the importance of weak ties.
Weak ties allow for information to be relayed across clusters of a network. Without the appearance of
weak ties, diffusion would be rather difficult to accomplish. The prime example of an individual who
possessed many weak ties goes by the name Roger Horchow. In The Tipping Point, Horchow is a
master at creating relationships and bonds in areas of life in which he had no real expertise. Horchow
had social connections in the arts, technology, agriculture, architecture, business, law, health care, and
any other occupational field . Horchow and his social connections were edges in which information
could be passed along seamlessly from one cluster to another, making the possibility of a complete
cascade much more probable regarding diffusion. Besides the Law of the Few, Gladwell attributes the
occurrence of a tipping point and its relation to diffusion with the Law of Stickiness as well.
The Law of Stickiness bases much of its philosophy upon the notion that there are certain factors that

The Ethnic Cleansing Of The United States
The ethnic cleansing of the United States has been a topic of discussion in Germany for more than a
century. Authors like Karl May and James Fenimore Cooper popularized western fiction. Adolf Hitler

the Munich putsch of 1923, Karl Haushofer taught Hitler of lebensraum, the idea of Manifest Destiny

the racial stereotypes, the philosophies, the national policies, the military strategies, and the role of
massacre in both Manifest Destiny in the United States and Hitler s war in East Europe. Westermann
concludes that, while Hitler did envision his war in East Europe as Manifest Destiny in the United
States, the two national projects did not share a common goal. Westermann concludes that Hitler
demonstrated his limited understanding of U.S. history in his belief that intent of the U.S. Army was
genocidal. Investigation

  • 2. Speech On Amelia Earhart I will be talking about the importance of Amelia Earhart. I didn t know a ton about her, except that she was the first to fly a plane across the ocean. Big whoop. After I did some research I came to find out how actually important she was/is and how important flying that plane was. Now I want to share that information with you. Our world needs to accept change and the fact that men and women are equally able to make this world a better place. Women have made a great impact on our world today, for example, Amelia Earhart. Most of our lives, we ve only heard accomplishments that men have made but, we need to realize that women play a huge part too and can do just as much. Just because men are cast as the dominant figures, doesn t mean the ladies are just there on the side and Amelia Earhart proved this. Today I would like to tell you about Amelia s early life, her accomplishments, and the impact she has on us today. To start off, Amelia Earhart saw her first plane at a state fair when she was 10. She didn t find planes interesting until she went to a stunt flying exhibition. On December 28, 1920, a pilot named Frank Hawks gave her a ride that would forever change her life. After she was up in the air, she knew she wanted to fly. She had ideas that were strong, challenging, eye opening, but she was not going to give up. Amelia was a graduate from Hyde Park High School and then attended Ogontz, a girl s finishing school. In the middle of her second year, she had left to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effects Of Social Media On Teenagers The Social Media Effect When you were a teenager, did social media impact your life? If not, it certainly has had an impact on the teenagers of America today. Social media has been around for a long time. There are many applications for social media, some of which are Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook. With the rapid evolution of social media, people believe that social media is impacting teenagers in a negative way. However, some believe that there are positive effects. The negative effects of social media on teenagers include poor student performance, lack of sleep, and increased vulnerability. However, before any of these arguments can be talked about, it is important that people know the history of social media. The development of social media started in the 1950 s with commercial computers. This led to the creation of personal computers, which paved the way for the development of e mail. One of the key developments of social media is the cell phone. They evolved into Iphones, which include many features such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. These allow people to communicate anywhere at any time. The first recognizable social network using the same definition as today s Facebook and MySpace sites was SixDegrees.com, launched in 1997. (Amidon Lusted). From this website, MySpace evolved. Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson created MySpace. They wanted this site to have fewer rules, and they wanted people to communicate and share music. MySpace led to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. New England And Southern Colonies Dbq Essay New England and Southern Colonies developed differently for several reasons. A few of the reasons why the regions were so diverse include; religion, climate, and slavery. The religion caused the colonies to conversed use to different beliefs. Climate made the region s live opposite lifestyles. Lastly, slavery made the colonies unique from each other because it showed the difference in job opportunities and amount of labor. Religion makes New England and Southern Colonies very distinctive from each other. In the letter, A model of Christian charity, it informs readers about New England s religion. At that time, the Food and Drug Administration had no regulations governing implantable devices. Companies like Dow Corning had to determine the safety of devices on their own. The surgeons conducted clinical trials of the implant prior to product introduction in 1964. • 17. The Benefit Of Bilingualism Benefits of Bilingualism In modern society, owning a place in the bilingual community is a special trait that allows for people to have a true connection with one another. Bilingual is a term describing people who can speak more than one language, and with more than 7000 languages inhibiting the world, the demand for bilingual speakers is steadily growing (Okal, 2014). The number of people who speak more than one language is increasing world wide as it is estimated that over a billion people in the world speak more than one language fluently (Okal, 2014, p. 226). With that being said, some studies show that approximately one in five Americans speak a language other than English at home, and that is just in the United States alone. Moreover, the number of people who are able to speak more than one language is more than likely going to exhibit an increase in the near future as well (Callahan Gandara, 2014). Along with an increase in speakers, an increase in demand for these speakers will increase too. Bilingualism opens the gateway to opportunities and benefits for people all around the world. However, many people do not see the importance of increasing the spread of bilingual speakers throughout the nation s communities. Without these bilingual speakers, various people and their neighborhoods would not be able to communicate with one another because of the large language barrier sitting between them. That is why being bilingual contains many benefits, including its brain improvements, career benefits, and social skill boosts that will help out the speaker and his or her listeners in the long run. Opposing Viewpoints Of course, the art of being bilingual may display a few faults. One of these faults may be that both languages can be present at the same time, which means that when a bilingual person hears a word, he or she is able to make a connection with both languages based on the sounds. In a study by Dr. Viorica Marian and Anthony Shook (2012), the authors explain how bilingual speakers connect sounds with both languages. For instance, if an English and Spanish bilingual speaker hears the word to to, his or her brain may instantly try to find words in both languages containing the sound to gives ... Herding in Europe Feng and Seasholes (2004) wrote a paper concerning the geographical delimitations of herding behaviour. They found that there is a significant correlation of trading behaviour made by investors on stock markets and that this correlation increases exponentially when investors are selling and buying within a specific geographical area. Indeed, the study showed that trades, which can be either sales or purchases, are deeply correlated when we split investors geographically. That correlates with the findings of Zhou Lai (2009) who state that herding measures may differ in stocks according to geographic regions and classification of industries. Stavroyiannis Babalos (2013) conducted an extremely relevant research project by investigating the existence of herding behaviour on the major European Stock Exchange Indexes. Power is the ability to influence another s behavior (Wasserman, pg. 3). It can be through rewards, coercion, or persuasion. Legitimate power is power that is accepted as right (Wasserman, pg. 4) or chose by using an agreed upon procedure (Wasserman, pg. 5), or authority deserving obedience (Wasserman, pg. 5). Elites gain authority and authority gains power. People feel they should follow authority. This power and authority control politics. If elites are expected to get the most and are the ones who gain authority, etc., then the problem of economic inequality will affect the U.S. by lowering the number of people with legitimate power. ... • 27. A Short Horizon Model And The Relation Between The Stock... In our analysis we used a short horizon model, meaning that we chose a window of 4 months before the merger was announced and 4 months after the actual merger was completed, and studied the security prices of the merging companies and their rivals over that time period. We then decided to use a 3 day event window, CAR [ 1,1] first used by Andrade, Mitchell and Stafford (2001), in which the event occurred on the 2nd day within that time frame. To do this, we used a market model to derive the relationship between the stock price of the firms and our chosen index, the Standard and Poors 500. At this point we also examined changes in the R D intensity between companies that received a second request and or complaint, and those that did not over the following 4 month period. We then used regression analysis to elucidate the relationship between the different firms and the reference index. Following this we then projected the normal returns using regression analysis for all of the days which fell within the event window. We then took the expected returns and subtracted the actual returns, and it was through this methodology that we could detect a relationship between cumulative abnormal returns of the acquiror and the likelihood of receiving a second request. To calculate the R D intensity, we take the cumulative R D for each firm in the 4 months prior to the event and 4 months after the event and divide that by the their combined sales to reach a post merger research and ... Usually, a really good business has fantastic employees, and not to say players are employees but same concept. Alabama has the very best players in the country. Since Saban has taken over the reigns as head coach, the Tide has posted a top five recruiting class. This has certainly been the biggest contributor to the success of the program. However, the Alabama Coaching Staff seems to prepare their athletes to win a National Championship game one which is vital to the success of a program in the SEC. As we stated earlier, the weight room has been vital to the success of the Tide. This is arguably the biggest strength of the program. Mental illness can contribute to high crime rates, suicide, drug addiction, mass shootings, prison overcrowding, and several other problems. This paper will discuss and examine mental health issues as it develops and result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the United States Military, and specifically how PTSD can result in suicide among military service members. PTSD is commonly and well known to infantry soldiers who were mostly deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq war between 2001 and 2003 due to an overwhelming and challenging environment. The war in Afghanistan and the invasion of Iraq conflicts, both have had a an actual impact on soldiers mental health. In addition, infantrymen are most likely to experience at least one event as a minimum that may result in PTSD than any other divisions in the military. According to Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Major Gary Wynn provides statistics shows that 93 percent report coming under fire from artillery, rockets, and mortars. 91 percent say their unit has been attacked or ambushed. 87 percent say they know someone who has been seriously injured or killed (Robson 2012). ... During a period roughly from the end of the Second World War to the early 1990s, neither epidemiology, medical geography, nor medical sociology tended directly to study the impact of the local social or physical environment on human health, according to Perspectives in Medical Sociology (Brown 2008). PTSD was accepted everywhere when it was introduced as a diagnosis in the early 1980s in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III) of the American Psychiatric Association. Although PTSD diagnosis met largely with skepticism by the public of the validity of the illness when first came out. Blair Wheaton and Shirin Montazer provided a detailed definition of Traumatic Stress in their chapter of Stressors, Stress, and Distress by stating, some stressors are thought to be so serious and so overwhelming in their impact that we must give them a separate status to distinguish them from the usual class of events that we designate as stressful. The most applicable term for these stressors is traumas (Wheaton Montazer 2010). In other words, PTSD is a complex mental disorder that develops in response to exposure to a severe traumatic event that stems a cluster of symptoms. Being afflicted with the disorder is debilitating and disrupt an individual s ability to function and perform the basic tasks. PTSD affects 3.5 percent of the U.S. adult population and approximately about 7 million Americans. The theory has implications for inequality within a country (Stopler Samuelson) and between countries (Factor Price Equalization). The Stopler Samuelson theory, which builds on the Heckscher Ohlin theory, predicts that with increased trade, the nation s abundant factor will gain and the scarce factor will lose. In terms of income inequality within a country this means that by increasing trade the lower income group, which control the abundant and cheap factor would realise an increase in income and the higher income group controlling the scarce resources would see a fall in income. The assertion by Stopler and Samuelson that increased trade would cause a decrease in inequality within a country is not strongly supported by empirical evidence. A study by Dollar and Kraay [2001] shows that in the period between 1960 and 1995, inequality has in fact slightly increased within countries that the authors have termed globalizers . The empirical evidence, however, does support the Factor Price Equalization theorem, which states that the movement of factors between countries is replaced by trade in final goods, thus international trade brings about an equalization of relative factor prices between countries. • 33. The Definition Of Marriage And Family Relationships Essay What is the definition of marriage in the Bible? Better yet what is the definition of family in the Bible? In Scripture there are many families which could be studied in order to better answer this question, but some of the most prominent choices are Abraham s family, David s family, and Solomon s family. Each of these families in turn had their own sets of issues and problems, but there are also Biblical solutions to these problems which shall be address through the course of this paper. But, before this is done it is important to take note of what God s definitions are. To begin, I will start by explaining what my understanding of marriage and family relationships according to scripture are supposed to look like. Now, throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament many commandments are given to both children and parents. For instance, one of the most obvious commands given to children was, Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you, (Ex. 20:12, New International Version (NIV)). To honor someone means to treat him or her with respect and put them in a place of high esteem. Honor and respect means a child should not speak back to their parents, they should not curse out their parents in any way, and in general they should respect their parents wishes. But, going further than this Colossians 3:20 says, Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord, (Col. 3:20, NIV). Children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The poem Ellis Island said that the American dream is not achieved with the self determination of Americans, but rather, it is achieved by the theft of self determination from Native Americans. The line, When the earth became owned , tells the reader that Americans only enjoy success because they took America, the land of success, from its original residents, the Native Americans (Bruchac l. 22). I d be a creator, a giver, a human being (Yezierska l. 16 17). When freed from the constant need to find food, men can put their efforts towards achieving their dreams. • 35. How Characteristics Of Culture Maintain Capitalist Society The purpose of this paper is to examine how characteristics of culture maintain capitalist society. I will be using Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer s The culture industry: enlightenment as mass deception, as the backbone of my analysis. This will be accomplished by assessing aspects of society such as: monopoly capitalism, the entertainment industry and relevance to modern day society. This paper argues that capitalism transformed culture into an ideological means of domination, and acts as brainwashing tool over the masses. Capitalism in The Concise Encyclopedia of Sociology is defined as: the system that provides for needs and wants, animated by a particular ethos, coordinated and organized by establishing practices, regulations, and laws, privileging particular types of knowledge. (Weber 1927, 47). Theodor Adomo and Max Horkheimer created a term known as culture industry which is the commercial commodification, and the mass production of pseudo culture by corporations (1947, p.29). The creation of the culture industry resulted in the standardisation of the cultural form, which eliminated an individual s ability to think critically. This occurred because of the greed that capitalism creates, the heads of production firms mass produce cultural goods that are aimed at people s desires to increase profitability. They argued that capitalism abandoned its liberal roots and began to monopolize industries, thus creating monopoly capitalism. In society, the culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While iGaming would be a new step for Michigan, the state already has some experience with forms of gaming on the internet. Michigan was one of the first states to implement an iLottery, and it proved to be a popular venture. Over 276,000 residents of Michigan have opened iLottery accounts and hundreds of thousands of tickets are sold per day through the iLottery. So might Michigan be fertile ground for full iGaming? And might it be another step toward the US industry getting to the critical mass it needs in order to keep growing? The most recent activity on the newly introduced Michigan bill, SB889, was on June 9, 2016, when the bill was amended by, and cleared, a key Senate committee. It remains to be seen whether the legislation will pass the full Legislature and be signed by the Governor this session, as in other states, iGaming bills have often languished for several sessions before finally becoming a reality. So what will the Michigan bill do if enacted? The bill would make internet gaming available to any person who is either physically present in Michigan or is otherwise permitted by law to place a wager in Michigan, which contemplates future liquidity sharing or compacts with other states. The tipping point essentially is the point at which small, seemingly insignificant changes become significant enough to cause a large and often times important change . Weak ties allow for information to be relayed across clusters of a network. Without the appearance of weak ties, diffusion would be rather difficult to accomplish. The prime example of an individual who possessed many weak ties goes by the name Roger Horchow. In The Tipping Point, Horchow is a master at creating relationships and bonds in areas of life in which he had no real expertise. Horchow had social connections in the arts, technology, agriculture, architecture, business, law, health care, and any other occupational field .
