A Mercy By Toni Morrison
A Mercy by Toni Morrison is a story of a sixteen year old slave girl named Florens. The story takes
place in the late seventeenth century and explores the experiences of African American through
slavery and freedom. The novel includes characters if mixed race; Portuguese, Dutch, English, Native
American and African American who are trying to settle down in the new world. Morrison focuses on
the ravages of slavery, both physical and emotional, that plagued the time. More specifically, she
writes about the complications that arise from slavery: strained relationships between mother and
daughter, the blurred lines of community ties. The story revolves around the main character Florens
who is grieved by the thought that her mother had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Morrison lets each of her key characters control the narrative at some point in A Mercy. Her choice
with both the treatment of time and the treatment of perspective makes it possible for her to capture
the reader s full attention and leave the reader disoriented and anxious for answers about the upcoming
events in the novel. The conflicts among the characters lay emphasis on novels structure. Morrison
writes each chapter of the book as if it is being told through the point of view of a different character
with only Florens points of view consistently repeating. The sequence of the narrative is as follows:
Florens /Jacob /Florens /Lina /Florens /Rebeka /Florens /Sorrow /Florens /Willard and Scully /Florens
/Florens Mother. The narrative structure of a Mercy is anything but a typical simple linear narrative
usually told by one narrator. The opening chapter of the novel is told by Florens point of view who is a
slave on a mission for her mistress. Florens point of view is told as her stream of conscious. This form
of first person narrative does progress in a linear fashion as Florens travels to find the blacksmith lover
who can possibly save her owner from dying of small pox. The last chapter of the novel is also written
as first person point of view by Florens Minha Mae. It is imperative that these chapters be written in
first person point of view because it makes the reader be able to be

Comment: I read this book and finished it in 3 weeks, short and fast for someone like me who doesn t
like to read. But I found this book very interesting; I usually read mystery books with crimes and
investigation because I like searching into the unknown. I found this book very interesting because it
was a crime and investigation novel, not only that. It opened up more Chinese knowledge for me. I
learnt a bit more about Chinese traditions and their beliefs and through this book I could say that it
was funny and suspending at the same time. I loved the plot as well; especially the part where in the
end we find out that the survivor who got shot in the chest was actually the whole mastermind behind
the crime was not foreseeable. It came totally out of the blue for me, it wasn t one of those read the
beginning of the book and then you could guess the rest of the story type, it kept me guessing the
whole way through the story. So I really enjoyed this book. But the worst part about it was the ending,
where the United States government allowed this to happen secretly in its waters so that it could have
a better relationship with China is just absurd, they need a better

The Creative Decision Making in a Documentary Production
This journal inspects the importance of creative decision making in various aspects of documentary
production, examines whether those decisions help to make the film an engaging cinematic piece, and
explores the influences it might have on the society, the cinema and the subject, in relation to my own
experience in producing a 15min documentary film Hackney Pirates, and my understandings of
relevant practice from the contemporary cinema.
Introduction
Films about education for children in critical situations have been seen in cinema since the 1990s. For
example, Zhang Yimou s 1999 film Not One Less tells a story about a teenage girl Wei Minzhi who
volunteers to teach in a one room primary school and her relationships with the pupils. And ... Show

Slightly frustrated at first, we realised that the interviews are actually not as necessary as in Être et
Avoir on a second thought, in that the theme of Être et Avoir also includes the teacher s devotion to his
pupils, while Hackney Pirates is purely about the children s learning experience, which satisfies the
objectives of Hackney Pirates; moreover, the volunteer training session facilitated by one of the
founders as part of the narrative structure we ve planned can provide essential information of the
organisation.
The opening
Être et Avoir opens with a scene of tough labour work and living conditions in a rural farm, followed
by a montage sequence of a classroom with warm and cheerful décor. The warm interior in contrast to
the cold exterior emphasizes on the light and positive tone of the film, which consequently helps to
attract the viewers attention and keeps them engaged in the following sequences.
Inspired by the opening sequence of Être et Avoir, we wanted to open the film with a train passing by
city landscape and finally arriving at Haggerston Overground station where Hackney Pirates is based.
At first, the director was not sure about what exactly she was expecting from the shot, whether just the
train passing by city landscape would be enough as an introduction or we have to let it come to a stop
i.e. Haggerston in order to provide extra geographic information. We travelled many times on the train
between Shoreditch

Essay on Causes of the American Revolution
On July 2, 1776, the second continental congress voted that the American Colonies were free from
British influence. (Danzer,102) On July 4, two days later, they adopted the Declaration of
Independence. These two events would begin what would become one of, if not the most important
events in American History. It began the war of Independence, when America won its right to be free.
There were many causes for the American Revolution. However most of them stemmed from paying
for the French Indian War. After the war, in 1763, the British began to feel the strain that often follows
the war.(Langley, 14) To raise money Parliament passed the stamp act in 1965, which required the
colonists to use special stamped paper for all legal documents, ... Show more content on

(Gottschalk, 31) Placing British officials among people who were not used to having their lives
scrutinized so caused the colonists to react violently, up to and including tarring and feathering British
officials.
The American Revolution began in a small Massachusetts town called Lexington. The governor of
Massachusetts, Thomas Gage, learned that the Militia was stockpiling weapons, gunpowder,
ammunition and other supplies. He ordered his troops to march on Lexington to confiscate the
supplies. On April 19, 1765 a force of 700 British troops faced 70 minute men lined up on the green.
The fighting was done in 15 minutes. 1 British soldier was injured and 8 minutemen were killed, 9
wounded. Gage did not find any supplies stockpiled however. On the march back, 3,000 4,000
colonials fired on the British, killing them by the dozens. Only reinforcements arriving from Boston
stopped it from becoming a complete disaster. (Danzer, 98)
According to The Americans, The popular gun during the early war was the brown Bess. Although
highly inaccurate at distance, it reloaded quickly and was deadly at close range. Troop movements
were by foot or boat. Horse was the fastest method of communication.
During the beginning of the revolution, the colonial radicals were outraged at the British butchers who
sought to retake control of America. The propaganda promoted Marylanders and Virginians to support
the revolution and Officials in South

Alana Thompson s Here Comes Honey Boo
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo follows the story of beauty pageant competitor Alana Thompson and her

Examples Of Faith In Night By Elie Wiesel
Death, murder, bloody horror! The death of many can destroy the minds of millions, just imagine what
the death of millions can do to one s mind and soul. The Holocaust was a horrific event, changing
people s hearts and even their relationships with god after millions were forced to watch others die, be
burned, and starved. This event of this mass murder is a great example of how man can be so
inhumane to one another and how those events can have a great effect on someone s faith.
Throughout the story Night, we followed Ellie throughout his experience in the holocaust. On many
occasions others were forced to watch other Jewish be killed. The first sign of this which caused loss
of faith was Moishe the Beadle, who was a very religious man, after ... Show more content on

Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled. Because He caused thousands of
children to burn in His mass graves? Because he kept six crematoria working day and night, including
Sabbath and the Holy Days? Because His great might, He had created Auschwitz, Birkenau, Buna, and
so many other factories of death. (Wiesel 67). This example shows how Elie is losing his faith. Wiesel
does not understand how if God, The Almighty , was real with the greatest power how he could allow
the burning and killing of so many innocent people and if He was then Elie would no longer want to
praise someone of that much cruelty. Later Wiesel gives a greater example of how he loses his faith in
god. And I, the former mystic, was thinking: Yes, man is stronger, Greater than God. When Adam and
Eve deceived You, You chased them from paradise, when You displeased by Noah s generation, You
brought down the flood... But look at these men whom You have betrayed, allowing them to be
tortured, slaughtered, gassed, and burned, what do they do? They pray before you! (Wiesel 68). This
continues to show that Elie is extremely confused how God could turn his back on them when they
worship him and didn t do anything to get this type of torture such as

The Four Steps Of The Two-Track Model Of Bereavement
The Two Track Model of Bereavement is a model that states loss is conceptualized along two axes.
Track I pertains to the biopsychosocial functioning in the event of a loss and Track II pertains to the
bereaved s continued emotional attachment and relationship to whoever is deceased. The effect of
Track I is seen through the bereaved s functioning, including their anxiety, their self esteem and self
worth, and their depressive affect and cognitions. Noting the ability of one to invest in life tasks after
experiencing a loss indicates how they are responding to the loss of the deceased. This Track is seen as
an expression similar to one of trauma, or crisis. Track II holds that the bereaved has difficulty
physically separating from the deceased. This can be seen in emotional, interpersonal, or cognitive
ways. It is shown through imagery and memories that the bereaved experiences surrounding the
deceased, whether positive or negative, as well as the emotional distance from them. These pictures in
the bereaved s head explain both the cognitive and emotional view of the person who has died (Rubin,
1999).
Four Steps of the Two Track Model of Bereavement
For those experiencing loss, it is common they experience similar stages while loss is assimilated.
Rubin (1999) states that in the first stage, the bereaved loses a close relationship, clearly impacting
them. One s homeostatic functioning will likely undergo changes, but these will return to normal, or
almost normal, once this

Rhetorical Analysis – Other Voices, Other Rooms
In this essay, Other Voices, Other Rooms , Professor Gerald Graff offers that education at a university
could be exciting and rewarding for students. However, it applies to those who have developed the
skills at summarizing, weighing arguments and synthesizing conflicting points. Unfortunately, not all
students possess these skills and as they start getting confused they will care more about appeasing the
professor in order to obtain good grades. In return, they will give their professors whatever they want
even though it seems contradictory to their beliefs (339). Graff believes that not all college students
possess the skills necessary to be successful and that professors are only making the issue worse by
teaching in a vacuum. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Graff says that contrast is fundamental to learning and in order to fully grasp the concept, and the
subject needs to be understood in relation to other ideas. In his second example, in attempting to
strengthen his argument, Graff uses an academic reference, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by
Thomas S. Kuhn. Kuhn says,
Both the literati and the scientist have remained largely walled up within their clashing assumptions
about objectivity, the smugness of which might have been punctured had these parties been forced to
argue with each other in their teaching (341). Even though Graff and Kuhn share the same thoughts,
Kuhn s reference does not provide any evidence to support his claims. He then introduces Gregory
Colomb, which his reference again doesn t add credibility; it detracts from the essay because readers
have to read the text several times just to get through this part of the writing. Graff says, Imagine
trying to write and academic paper when you send that almost anything you say can be used against
you and that the intellectual moves that got you an A in existentialist philosophy may get you a C
minus and a dirty look in Skinnerian behaviorism (342) . He goes on to say, When students fail to

Video Gaming And Its Impact On Society
Over the years, video gaming has become more and more popular and has started to become
something integrated in with society instead of being cast out of it. It has breached the generational
gap, joining the ranks of sports, movies, and other activities that people of all ages can enjoy.
Speaking of sports, gaming has spread its wings there as well, officially being dubbed esports or
electronic sports, gathering players from all over the globe and competing for trophies and cash prizes.
Two of the most popular esports are League of Legends, League for short, and Smite. However, being
similar games, many people claim that there is no difference between them, stating that one ripped of
the other and that the other is inferior in some way. However, just like football and rugby, while they
may look identical to anyone looking in from the outside, anyone who has participated in both games
for a decent time will tell you that they are drastically different in gameplay, game feel, and design
aspects. Before we compare the two of these games, we will briefly go over what they are. Both
League and Smite are MOBA s or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Just like there are certain things
that identify a car as a car and not, let s say, a toaster, there are certain aspects that most MOBA games
follow. In each game, there are two teams with a predetermined number of players on each side. The
goal of the game is to destroy the opponent s base before they destroy yours. Each player controls

Review Of Ayn Rand s Anthem
Anthem: A Review Anthem written by Ayn Rand is a novella about Equality 7 2521 and the dystopian
society he lives in. Everything is decided by a World Council and doing anything that makes you stand
out is classified as crime, your individuality is seen as a great evil. It is a warning of how putting
others in front of yourself is a great evil. So, after all 105 pages, how good was Anthem exactly? Plot
(6/10): The plot of Anthem is quite simple, almost everything you have seen in a dystopian novel is
also portrayed in Anthem. What is unique about Anthem however, is how the plot is given to you.
Pronouns in Anthem are quite unique, replacing words like I or me to those that refer to the group ( we
or our ). This little change causes the story feel more unsettling, as it gives the reader a sense that no

Theme Of Time In A Rose For Emily
In A Rose for Emily, Faulkner uses the aspect of time to accentuate details of the setting and vice
versa. By disregarding the chronological order of development of Miss Emily s life, at first Faulkner
gives the reader a finished complexity, and then allows the reader to examine this puzzle step by step,
piece by piece. By doing this, he enhances the plot and portrays two different angles of time held by
the characters. The first perspective, the world as the present, shows time as a progression and the past
is a shrinking road. The second perspective, the world of tradition and the past, views the past as a
huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches, divided from them now by the narrow bottleneck of
the most recent decade of years. (5) The first perspective is based on Homer and the modern
generation. The second is based on confederate soldiers and the older members of the Board of
Aldermen. Emily holds the second view too, however for her there is no bottleneck separating her
from the meadow of the past.
Faulkner starts off the story with Miss Emily s funeral, where the men see her as a fallen monument
(1) and the women are curious about the inside of her house. He draws a picture of a woman who is
fragile because she has fallen, but still symbolic and important like a monument. The particulars of
Miss Emily s house are very similar to her and symbolize what she stands for. It is set on what had
once been the most select street. (1) The narrator, which is the

Prof. Joe Ilsever
This paper will critically analyze a paper published in the International Journal of Production
Economics in January 2009 (Volume 117, Issue 1) (Schmidberger, Bals, Hartmann, amp; Jahns, 2009)
concerning the development and application of a Performance Management System (PMS) for air side
crews in some of the major European hub airports. This study is valuable in that the benchmarking
principles established here are relevant to other industries since the same process for developing this
holistic benchmarking process can be adapted and applied to generic business processes. This ... Show

Still others may simply allow for airlines to establish their own corporate ground service bases to
work independently of other generic airport services (Fuhr amp; Beckers, 2006). Applying any
standardized measurement system to something so non standardized presents quite a challenge, if the
PMS is too flexible or broad it will not be able to adequately express enough detail to be useful, if it is
too rigid it simply won t apply to all of the airports and doesn t allow for change in an inherently
volatile industry. Schmidberger s critique of the PMS established throughout European airports is very
positive, though it does not place a very high emphasis on establishing this need for balance between
detail and flexibility. Schmidberger s report contrasts his proposed PMS with the usual methods of
evaluation currently in use at several airports. Most of these measurement systems define airside
ground services as subsets of other larger firms (such as airport authorities or airlines) (Chow, Heaver,
amp; Henriksson, 1994), this is not necessarily an accurate representation of these ground service
entities seeing as in many cases they are quite separate from associated parent companies or
completely separate entities wherein logistics are a primary function. While the establishment of this
contrast in Schmidberger s report certainly has value, it fails to note that in

The Terrible Old Man Essay
The Terrible Old Man
The Terrible Old Man is a short story written in 1920 by H.P. Lovecraft, who was a famous author of
sciene fiction, fantasy and last but not least horrer. I will, by analysing the characters, the setting and
the ending, try to interpret and find the main theme of this story. People often judge each other by the
way that they dress, by the work they have or by their amount of money. Sometimes that judgement is
fair but at other times it is most definitely not. The short story The Terrible Old Man is one of those
other times. The main character in his story is the Terrible Old Man. He is a very mysterious man. He

He was by nature reserved, and when one is aged and feeble, one s reserve is doubly strong. Besides,
so ancient a sea captain must have witnessed scores of things much more stirring in the far off days of
his unremembered youth. (section 7, l. 4).The text somehow changes from being objective to being
subjectively written from the view of the citizens of Kingsport. The ending is written like there is no
way that the Terrible Old Man could be the killer, because he is old, weak and all alone. That is the
image of how people are seing the old man. They are not even giving it a second thought that he is not
shocked by the story. They are judging him by his cover . The main theme in this story is the old
saying: You can t judge a book by its cover . Through the whole story people are judging the Terrible
Old Man by his cover. They are seeing an old, weak, poor man who is unable to do anyone any harm,
or even to defend himself. And the truth is that he is quite dangerous and most certainly able to do
others harm. In the end it is the mistake that the robbers make by judging the Terrible Old Man on his

Minimum Wage Rise Proposal

Finally, they remain doubts about the reliability of the data collection. Have non random restaurants
incentives to misreport? Measurement error in independent variables generates attenuation bias, while
in independent higher standards errors. Even when heteroskedasticity corrected standard errors are
used, they are critical and, if high, the effect is less likely to be identified: if minimum wage rise had a
small but real (positive or negative) employment effect, random errors could produce a larger or
smaller misemployment effect than the true level, even zero . Given that probably remains some
measurement error problems in the study, could be that the employment rate effect is not correctly
identified. Results are the average wages effect valid only for the narrow definition of treated cases,
assuming constant effects on employment, and controlling for pre existing differences and time trends.
However, a bigger sample (more states, levels wages and law compliance) will serve to estimate
different effects as what happen at other levels of minimum wages? Is the effect constant above
income levels? We do not think so . Besides, the paper says nothing about long term effects. These
results are still sensible to economic downturns or variables changing over time. Longer data periods
would avoid time effects. What would happen if the rise coincides with an

A Report On The Marine Corps
A month after graduating high school, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In less than a year
after that, I found myself speeding in a Humvee on a dirt road in Habbiniyah, Iraq, just a mile of the
Euphrates River. Our mission was to assist a Marine Reconnaissance unit in securing insurgent
weapon caches. I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my veins, as I was ready to tackle my first
major op. My truck, along with another, responded to the recon unit when they radioed for help to
load a weapons cache. As we sped over to the site, an IED exploded and ripped apart the engine of the
following truck. The vehicle contained my squad leader, two marines, and our squad s only medic. As
a combat lifesaver (CLS), my secondary mission kicked in. My instincts were to assess the casualties,
triage, and treat the wounded. We were fortunate they only suffered concussions, with the gunner
having minor lacerations to the face. After dressing the wound, a MEDEVAC was secured to transport
them back to base. Within minutes of the helicopter leaving, another explosion was heard where the
cache was located. We rushed to the scene, only to see a truck engulfed in flames. When I reached the
casualty collection point, I was updated on what occurred. The truck hit a landmine as they were
backing onto the road, injuring everyone near the vehicle. Most of the passengers got out, but one was
unconscious and trapped inside. Much to my dismay, the Marine was my team leader. I fought

Data gathering, reviewing, and analyzation is a very important step in an effective evaluation or

specifically, Guerra Lopez (2008) claimed that an organizations internal sources of data input are often
used as a means to identify prior performance and assessments needs and results. These sources
identified by Guerra Lopez are as follows.
Strategic plan: Management s source for communicating the organization s vision, business plan,
goals, and objectives. Describes the organizations prior outcomes and outlook for the future of the
company.
Annual reports: Identifies the immediate and potential future financial standing for the organization.
Project plans: List individual areas of concentration that connect directly with the organization s
overall strategic plan. It compartmentalizes the objectives of different divisions within the
organization based on function and potential.
Consulting studies: An independent study focused on a narrow window of assessment. These studies
are not evaluations in that they are not geared towards measuring the outcome of a program or event
but instead they are formed to review processes without labeling or assigning judgment or

Heat Is The Transfer Of Thermal Energy Between...
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between substances. Thermal energy is the kinetic energy of
moving particles of matter. If you go camping, you usually build a fire to sit around at night. Have you
ever wondered why a marshmallow cooks without touching the flame, why the smoke rises, or why
water in a pan boils? Heat can move from one object to another in three different ways: conduction,
convection and radiation.
Some sources of heat may include the following: the sun, friction, and the earth. Life on earth depends
on the sun. The sun provides heat/light for the entire solar system. A person could generate a fire by
rubbing two sticks together. The Earth contains much heat seep inside. Some of the heat escapes to the
surface ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thermal energy radiates through air from a fire causing the fire s energy to transfer to the
marshmallow.
As stated before, thermal conductor occurs when particles of warmer matter bump into particles of
cooler matter and transfer some of their thermal energy to the cooler particles. Conduction is usually
faster in certain solids and liquids than in gases. Returning to the example of a camp fire; what
happens if you use an old metal hangar to roast hot dogs? As the hot dogs cooks, the fire heats the end
of the hanger. If we leave the hanger in the fire long enough, eventually the end we are holding will
become too hot for us to handle. The flames to the metal were transferred by the heat, and then from
molecule to molecule in the hanger. Now, what would have happened if you had chosen a stick to
roast your hot dog? Though the stick may have caught fire, it would not have conducted the heat to
your hand. This is because wood is a very poor heat conductor.
Heat insulators are materials that do not let heat move through them easily. They do not conduct heat
well. Plastic, wood and some fabrics are good thermal insulators. Thermal insulators are good at
keeping heat out and keeping heat in. A winter scarf is a good example of a thermal insulator. It stops
the heat from your body escaping into the cold air.
Temperature is defined as the average kinetic energy of the particles of matter. When

Flourishing North American Cultures
2000 years before Europeans began to arrive in the New World, the last era of the pre Columbian
development began. North American cultures such as the Mississippian culture, the Hopewell
Tradition, and the Hohokam culture experienced growth and environmental adaptation throughout this
era. Major contributions and innovations of Native Americans have developed and been passed on
through generations of ancestors. Originating in 700 A.D., the Mississippian culture expanded through
the Mississippi Valley and out into the southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia and Florida. For 800
years, until the 1550s, the Mississippian culture prospered. They cultivated a substantial amount of

At the peak of their dynamic culture, the Anasazi developed the Chaco Canyon. Within the canyon,
they constructed many pueblos, totaling nearly seven hundred rooms. In addition, they built water

fathers of America looked at the Iroquois, who lived along the St. Lawrence River in what is now New
York, as a model of democracy to base America s political system on. From the Iroquois, Europeans
learned of a well developed system of checks, balances and supreme law. Because the Iroquois
influenced the Articles of Confederation, they were one of the most important native groups in North
American history. The federation of the Iroquois enabled them to prosper in independence and protect
themselves from enemies. The Hohokam culture of present day Arizona existed from 300 A.D. to
1200 A.D. The earliest Hohokam people lived in unusually large lodges possibly with their extended

Mao Zedong Ideology
Mao Zedong as a Chinese Nationalist

Mao Zedong was a man who went down in history as a terrible person who ruled with an iron fist. He
was, however, a man who worked hard for his country. As defined by Merriam Webster dictionary,
loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation
above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to
those of other nations or supranational groups. Mao is certainly someone who would be called a
nationalist. While Mao was in charge he had a few big objectives which were all for, in his eyes, the
good of the country.
One of his objectives was unifying China by eliminating warlords and getting rid of outsider
influence. Mao initiated sweeping campaigns against bribery, corruption, and tax evasion, among
other things, in order to eliminate the previous chaos and instability that had been created in China s
fractious warlord ruled past. The warlords in the past had caused so many of the problems that Mao
had to live with as there was so much corruption which lead to there being many poor people. A series
of bad harvests in Hunan led to outbreaks of famine, and some of the desperate Hunanese formed a
group under the slogan Eat Rice Without Charge, and seized stores of rice from the wealthier farmers.
Among the shipments they seized was one that Mao s father was sending to the

Electronics, the headphones giant, for $3.2 billion. Apple has enough money to buy or build any

According to NBC News, Apple CEO Tim Cook told Re/Code that the company could build about

kindred spirits to company (Wagstaff, 2014). Given the years of musical experience that both Dr. Dre,

wonder that Apple would have made the decision to acquire Beats Electronics and Beats Music. In just
six years, Dr. Dre and Iovine has sealed the whole consumer market for high end headphones. Beats
also unleashed Beats Music, a streaming music service.
The negotiations take place at a critical time: the music market has seen a massive shift towards
streaming and away from downloads. U.S. revenue from downloads which iTunes dominates dropped

Should The Government Draw The Line Between Safety And...
Since the 9/11 attacks, concerns about the fine line between safety and privacy have arisen. It all
began after the Patriot Act was enacted by the government to protect the safety of our country. One of
its most controversial sections is section 215 which allows access to records and other tangible items
under FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act). Many Americans argue its right for the
government to have access to certain personal information for the safety of the country. Others allege
this goes against the fourth amendment of the constitution which states people are protected from
unreasonable searches and seizures by the government. However, it does not protect against all

television, in magazines, or here about on the radio; those are the celebrities I am referring to here, but
those aren t the only celebrities out there. There are also other interpretations for the word celebrity.
My favorite alternative to the typical thought of a celebrity is the term local celebrity. A local celebrity
or hometown celebrity doesn t have to be rich or world famous, they are known for doing something
that has either impacted the local area or has made his/her hometown proud. My focus is on the
quintessential definition of celebrity, the ones that are known for their influence on the current
generation, my generation.
The current generation is easily influenced because it is completely focused on being accepted by
society and trying to find ones individual identity. The youth of my generation believe that their
identity is based on society s acceptance; not on their own thoughts, desires, and opinions of
themselves. Most celebrities preach about individuality to

Stereotypes Of Generation Z
When hearing the term generation Z lots of different thoughts and stereotypes probably come to mind.
People born in the years of 1995 to 2010 just missed the age where technology took over childhood,
yet still made it to remember few historical events such as 9/11. Since the technology boom, Gen Z
humans have many more resources than ever before. With the whole world ahead of them, they can go
on to accomplish many things as long as they get passed the negative stereotypes. Generation Z has
been labeled lazy, impatient, and entrepreneurial. Although most of the stereotypes are negative, there
is some positive in this generation.
One of the many stereotypes Generation Z is referred as is lazy . In an article posted by The
Huffington Post, it is stated that Gen Z is often portrayed as less engaged in politics; they have short
attention spans and don t care about the weighty issues that confront their generation and the nation;
and they re more interested in technology and celebrity than staying active in their communities and
schools. (Micoleta) Because this generation grew up with google at the touch of their fingers and with
smartphones and other hand held devices, they can search anything at any given time without even
moving. Although some might consider this lazy, others might argue that it is resourceful. I agree with
this lazy stereotype because I have seen first hand how it has affected society. Online shopping has
taken a huge hit; people can order anything from

Jimi Hendrix Accomplishments
Jimi Hendrix was called the greatest electric guitarist. He was someone who was determined to make
his life worth his time. Hendrix wanted to go somewhere and he never stopped trying to get to where
he wanted to be. He started from having absolutely nothing, he barely had a family at some points in
his life. Then at the age Twenty Five he was standing on a stage in front of over half of a million
people, who were there to see him. All he was, was a frustrated artist, trying to learn to read music.
Jimi Hendrix was one of the most inspiring and remarkable musicians of the rock era. James Allen
Hendrix, who was better known as Al Hendrix was born in 1919, in Vancouver, Canada. Lucille Jeter
was born in 1925, in Seattle, Washington, where Al ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He worked with an electric ensemble called Gypsy Sun and Rainbows; featuring himself, Mitch
Mitchell, Billy Cox, Juma Sultan, and Jerry Velez (James Marshall Hendrix). Hendrix was to be
closing the show, which was a very high honour, considering who was on the roster; The Band,
Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Santana, The Who and Crosby, Stills,
Nash and Young, Sky and the Family Stone. Once Hendrix and his band finally took stage, the show
was already running way over schedule. The 500,000 young crowd members were exhausted from a
weekend full of huge performances and heavy rain. However when Hendrix started his set shortly
after dawn on that Monday morning, instead of Sunday night, he amazed the mud soaked crowds and
brought them to a frenzy with his performance (Unterberger 101). Hendrix performed his rock
interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner. He astonished the audience with his performance, it was
like no one has ever seen or heard before, one of a kind (Jimi Hendrix

The Cultural Diversity And Identity
Istanbul
One of the most captivating cities in the world, Istanbul, known for its western and eastern traditional
cities and being built on two continents has arguably one of the richest histories of architecture in the
world. Rich periods in time can be exemplified through architectural examples can be observed in
many structures throughout the country. Each defined period in Istanbul s history can be clearly
observed through its visual markers left in architecture. Even today, the cultural diversity and identity
can be pictured through architecture. History of Istanbul
Known today as Asian Istanbul, this land is believed to be inhabited as early as 3000 BC. The earliest
recorded history is in the 7th century, when Greek colonists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The city was rebuilt and featured incredible structures such as the Hagia Sophia which symbolize the
heights the Byzantine culture reached. Specific attributes that made living in such a city so desirable
were its trade locations and transportation between three different continents. However, what made the
city desirable also made it a target for those who wanted to take advantage of its attributes. Over the
next several hundred years, the city was subject to attacks from Persians, Arabs and nomadic people
trying to take over the city. Members of the fourth crusade, who also governed the city for a short
time, also attacked Constantinople. All these attacked lead to an attack in 1453 by the Ottoman Turks
led by Sultan Mehmet II. Due to the constant attacks led by others, the city s defenses were severely
weakened, allowing the Ottoman Turks to conquer the city. The city was then renamed to Istanbul,
which became the third and last capital of the Ottoman Empire. The city was the center for military
campaigns aimed at enlarging the Ottoman empire in a dramatic manor. By the mid 1500 s, the city of
Istanbul had a population of nearly 500,000. With a population this large, the city was a major
cultural, political and commercial nerve center. The Ottoman rule remained until its forces were
defeated in World War I and Istanbul was occupied by the allies. Today, this area is now known as the
Republic of Turkey, established in 1923 after the war of

Coastal Ecosystems In Florida
Florida s coastal ecosystems are one of the greatest assets that Florida has today. An ecosystem is an
interacting and interdependent community made up of both living and non living parts. Ecosystems
include the air, water, soil, and sunlight as well as all the living organisms present, from the simplest
amoeba to the plants and more complex animals that are all a part of the system. There is no size
limitation for ecosystems, the entire earth can be considered as a one ecosystem. And so with more
coastline than any other state in the contiguous United States, it is a source of economic,
environmental and recreational benefits. People come from all over the world to visit the beautiful
Florida beaches.1 Coastal uplands are composed of substrate and vegetation influenced primarily by
coastal maritime processes such as erosion, deposition, salt spray, and storms with storm surges.
Coastal uplands also consist of mesic or xeric communities restricted to barrier islands and near shore
with woody or herbaceous vegetation. Other communities that can be found with in south Florida s
coastal upland environments include beach dunes, coastal berms, coastal grasslands, coastal rock
barrens, coastal strands, maritime hammocks and shell mounds. The levels of these ... Show more

wind blows sand inland from the beach until trapped by

While this occurs during extremely harsh environmental weather, beach dunes are subject to drastic
topographic alterations during winter storms and hurricanes, taking the brunt of storm surges. As the
plants grow upward and burial continues, a fore dune is built. 2Dune height is largely determined by

My Interview With Mr. Simon
Before my interview with Mr. Alan Simon, I had been under the impression that the interviewee had
attended a business school. Thus, I was entirely caught off guard when I learned, scarcely a few
minutes into the interview, that Mr. Simon did not graduate college with a business degree, but instead
graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a computer science degree. Because the first
portion of the interview plan I had prepared focused on a business education and its applications
beyond the classroom, I was forced to immediately change my opening questions and adapt to the new
situation. Questions like why did you choose your particular business major were obviously no longer
applicable. However, my improvisational skills, unfortunately, were rather mediocre. I was unable to
immediately think of many new, solid questions and so instead chose to reframe my original plan to
accommodate for this unexpectedness. For example, I asked how beneficial he believed his computer
science degree was in the business world and whether business majors should look to possibly double
majoring and minoring in STEM fields, like computer science. Mr. Simon s computer science degree
definitely caught me off guard and I believe my hesitation in adapting to it was a big weakness of
mine. However, I think I did a relatively all right job in maintaining my composure during this, and
continued to maintain eye contact and speak steadily during this portion of the interview.
Overall, I felt

Analysis Of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
There is a great deal of tension about the ritual that surrounds the Lottery traditions in Shirley Jackson
s short story, The Lottery. Out of fear and superstition, the lottery ceremony continues to exist. In
short, the lottery is more of a tradition rather than a ritual at the point we witness in the story, but out
of respect and fear for tradition, the towns folks are more than willing to commit an act of mass
violence, simply for the sake of a tradition. Born in San Francisco, California on December 14, 1916,
Shirley Hardie Jackson was born to Leslie and Geraldine Jackson. Jackson was raised in quite a
traditional and well off household, which helped develop themes for later short stories. (Alessio 114)
As a young child Jackson loved the subject of witchcraft, and she often spent hours reading various
books. She spent a decent amount of her childhood writing poetry and short stories, and eventually
moved up north and attended the University of Rochester. (Biography.com) After completing her first
year of college, Jackson decided to take a year off and focus on her literature work before moving to a
new college; Syracuse University. During her brief pause in her education Jackson would at a
minimum, write a thousands of words a day to improve her work. Once the two were married, Hyman
received a job as a professor at Bennington College in North Bennington, Vermont where the two
settled and also modeled the setting for her well known short story The Lottery. On June

  • 3. A Mercy By Toni Morrison A Mercy by Toni Morrison is a story of a sixteen year old slave girl named Florens. The story takes place in the late seventeenth century and explores the experiences of African American through slavery and freedom. The novel includes characters if mixed race; Portuguese, Dutch, English, Native American and African American who are trying to settle down in the new world. Morrison focuses on the ravages of slavery, both physical and emotional, that plagued the time. More specifically, she writes about the complications that arise from slavery: strained relationships between mother and daughter, the blurred lines of community ties. The story revolves around the main character Florens who is grieved by the thought that her mother had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Morrison lets each of her key characters control the narrative at some point in A Mercy. Her choice with both the treatment of time and the treatment of perspective makes it possible for her to capture the reader s full attention and leave the reader disoriented and anxious for answers about the upcoming events in the novel. The conflicts among the characters lay emphasis on novels structure. Morrison writes each chapter of the book as if it is being told through the point of view of a different character with only Florens points of view consistently repeating. The sequence of the narrative is as follows: Florens /Jacob /Florens /Lina /Florens /Rebeka /Florens /Sorrow /Florens /Willard and Scully /Florens /Florens Mother. The narrative structure of a Mercy is anything but a typical simple linear narrative usually told by one narrator. The opening chapter of the novel is told by Florens point of view who is a slave on a mission for her mistress. Florens point of view is told as her stream of conscious. This form of first person narrative does progress in a linear fashion as Florens travels to find the blacksmith lover who can possibly save her owner from dying of small pox. The last chapter of the novel is also written as first person point of view by Florens Minha Mae. It is imperative that these chapters be written in first person point of view because it makes the reader be able to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But I found this book very interesting; I usually read mystery books with crimes and investigation because I like searching into the unknown. I found this book very interesting because it was a crime and investigation novel, not only that. It opened up more Chinese knowledge for me. I learnt a bit more about Chinese traditions and their beliefs and through this book I could say that it was funny and suspending at the same time. I loved the plot as well; especially the part where in the end we find out that the survivor who got shot in the chest was actually the whole mastermind behind the crime was not foreseeable. It came totally out of the blue for me, it wasn t one of those read the beginning of the book and then you could guess the rest of the story type, it kept me guessing the whole way through the story. So I really enjoyed this book. But the worst part about it was the ending, where the United States government allowed this to happen secretly in its waters so that it could have a better relationship with China is just absurd, they need a better ... • 5. The Creative Decision Making in a Documentary Production This journal inspects the importance of creative decision making in various aspects of documentary production, examines whether those decisions help to make the film an engaging cinematic piece, and explores the influences it might have on the society, the cinema and the subject, in relation to my own experience in producing a 15min documentary film Hackney Pirates, and my understandings of relevant practice from the contemporary cinema. Introduction Films about education for children in critical situations have been seen in cinema since the 1990s. For example, Zhang Yimou s 1999 film Not One Less tells a story about a teenage girl Wei Minzhi who volunteers to teach in a one room primary school and her relationships with the pupils. And ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Slightly frustrated at first, we realised that the interviews are actually not as necessary as in Être et Avoir on a second thought, in that the theme of Être et Avoir also includes the teacher s devotion to his pupils, while Hackney Pirates is purely about the children s learning experience, which satisfies the objectives of Hackney Pirates; moreover, the volunteer training session facilitated by one of the founders as part of the narrative structure we ve planned can provide essential information of the organisation. The opening Être et Avoir opens with a scene of tough labour work and living conditions in a rural farm, followed by a montage sequence of a classroom with warm and cheerful décor. The warm interior in contrast to the cold exterior emphasizes on the light and positive tone of the film, which consequently helps to attract the viewers attention and keeps them engaged in the following sequences. Inspired by the opening sequence of Être et Avoir, we wanted to open the film with a train passing by city landscape and finally arriving at Haggerston Overground station where Hackney Pirates is based. At first, the director was not sure about what exactly she was expecting from the shot, whether just the train passing by city landscape would be enough as an introduction or we have to let it come to a stop i.e. Haggerston in order to provide extra geographic information. • 6. Essay on Causes of the American Revolution On July 2, 1776, the second continental congress voted that the American Colonies were free from British influence. (Danzer,102) On July 4, two days later, they adopted the Declaration of Independence. These two events would begin what would become one of, if not the most important events in American History. It began the war of Independence, when America won its right to be free. There were many causes for the American Revolution. However most of them stemmed from paying for the French Indian War. After the war, in 1763, the British began to feel the strain that often follows the war.(Langley, 14) To raise money Parliament passed the stamp act in 1965, which required the colonists to use special stamped paper for all legal documents, ... (Gottschalk, 31) Placing British officials among people who were not used to having their lives scrutinized so caused the colonists to react violently, up to and including tarring and feathering British officials. The American Revolution began in a small Massachusetts town called Lexington. The governor of Massachusetts, Thomas Gage, learned that the Militia was stockpiling weapons, gunpowder, ammunition and other supplies. He ordered his troops to march on Lexington to confiscate the supplies. On April 19, 1765 a force of 700 British troops faced 70 minute men lined up on the green. The fighting was done in 15 minutes. 1 British soldier was injured and 8 minutemen were killed, 9 wounded. Gage did not find any supplies stockpiled however. On the march back, 3,000 4,000 colonials fired on the British, killing them by the dozens. Only reinforcements arriving from Boston stopped it from becoming a complete disaster. • 8. Examples Of Faith In Night By Elie Wiesel Death, murder, bloody horror! The death of many can destroy the minds of millions, just imagine what the death of millions can do to one s mind and soul. The Holocaust was a horrific event, changing people s hearts and even their relationships with god after millions were forced to watch others die, be burned, and starved. This event of this mass murder is a great example of how man can be so inhumane to one another and how those events can have a great effect on someone s faith. Throughout the story Night, we followed Ellie throughout his experience in the holocaust. On many occasions others were forced to watch other Jewish be killed. Because His great might, He had created Auschwitz, Birkenau, Buna, and so many other factories of death. (Wiesel 67). This example shows how Elie is losing his faith. Wiesel does not understand how if God, The Almighty , was real with the greatest power how he could allow the burning and killing of so many innocent people and if He was then Elie would no longer want to praise someone of that much cruelty. Later Wiesel gives a greater example of how he loses his faith in god. And I, the former mystic, was thinking: Yes, man is stronger, Greater than God. When Adam and Eve deceived You, You chased them from paradise, when You displeased by Noah s generation, You brought down the flood... But look at these men whom You have betrayed, allowing them to be tortured, slaughtered, gassed, and burned, what do they do? They pray before you! (Wiesel 68). This continues to show that Elie is extremely confused how God could turn his back on them when they worship him and didn t do anything to get this type of torture such as ... • 9. The Four Steps Of The Two-Track Model Of Bereavement The Two Track Model of Bereavement is a model that states loss is conceptualized along two axes. Track I pertains to the biopsychosocial functioning in the event of a loss and Track II pertains to the bereaved s continued emotional attachment and relationship to whoever is deceased. The effect of Track I is seen through the bereaved s functioning, including their anxiety, their self esteem and self worth, and their depressive affect and cognitions. Noting the ability of one to invest in life tasks after experiencing a loss indicates how they are responding to the loss of the deceased. This Track is seen as an expression similar to one of trauma, or crisis. Track II holds that the bereaved has difficulty physically separating from the deceased. This can be seen in emotional, interpersonal, or cognitive ways. It is shown through imagery and memories that the bereaved experiences surrounding the deceased, whether positive or negative, as well as the emotional distance from them. These pictures in the bereaved s head explain both the cognitive and emotional view of the person who has died (Rubin, 1999). Four Steps of the Two Track Model of Bereavement For those experiencing loss, it is common they experience similar stages while loss is assimilated. Rubin (1999) states that in the first stage, the bereaved loses a close relationship, clearly impacting them. • 11. Rhetorical Analysis – Other Voices, Other Rooms In this essay, Other Voices, Other Rooms , Professor Gerald Graff offers that education at a university could be exciting and rewarding for students. However, it applies to those who have developed the skills at summarizing, weighing arguments and synthesizing conflicting points. Unfortunately, not all students possess these skills and as they start getting confused they will care more about appeasing the professor in order to obtain good grades. In return, they will give their professors whatever they want even though it seems contradictory to their beliefs (339). Graff believes that not all college students possess the skills necessary to be successful and that professors are only making the issue worse by teaching in a vacuum. ... Graff says that contrast is fundamental to learning and in order to fully grasp the concept, and the subject needs to be understood in relation to other ideas. In his second example, in attempting to strengthen his argument, Graff uses an academic reference, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn. Kuhn says, Both the literati and the scientist have remained largely walled up within their clashing assumptions about objectivity, the smugness of which might have been punctured had these parties been forced to argue with each other in their teaching (341). Even though Graff and Kuhn share the same thoughts, Kuhn s reference does not provide any evidence to support his claims. He then introduces Gregory Colomb, which his reference again doesn t add credibility; it detracts from the essay because readers have to read the text several times just to get through this part of the writing. Graff says, Imagine trying to write and academic paper when you send that almost anything you say can be used against you and that the intellectual moves that got you an A in existentialist philosophy may get you a C minus and a dirty look in Skinnerian behaviorism (342) . Video Gaming And Its Impact On Society Over the years, video gaming has become more and more popular and has started to become something integrated in with society instead of being cast out of it. It has breached the generational gap, joining the ranks of sports, movies, and other activities that people of all ages can enjoy. Speaking of sports, gaming has spread its wings there as well, officially being dubbed esports or electronic sports, gathering players from all over the globe and competing for trophies and cash prizes. Two of the most popular esports are League of Legends, League for short, and Smite. However, being similar games, many people claim that there is no difference between them, stating that one ripped of the other and that the other is inferior in some way. However, just like football and rugby, while they may look identical to anyone looking in from the outside, anyone who has participated in both games for a decent time will tell you that they are drastically different in gameplay, game feel, and design aspects. Before we compare the two of these games, we will briefly go over what they are. Both League and Smite are MOBA s or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Just like there are certain things that identify a car as a car and not, let s say, a toaster, there are certain aspects that most MOBA games follow. • 15. Theme Of Time In A Rose For Emily In A Rose for Emily, Faulkner uses the aspect of time to accentuate details of the setting and vice versa. By disregarding the chronological order of development of Miss Emily s life, at first Faulkner gives the reader a finished complexity, and then allows the reader to examine this puzzle step by step, piece by piece. By doing this, he enhances the plot and portrays two different angles of time held by the characters. The first perspective, the world as the present, shows time as a progression and the past is a shrinking road. The second perspective, the world of tradition and the past, views the past as a huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches, divided from them now by the narrow bottleneck of the most recent decade of years. (5) The first perspective is based on Homer and the modern generation. The second is based on confederate soldiers and the older members of the Board of Aldermen. Emily holds the second view too, however for her there is no bottleneck separating her from the meadow of the past. Faulkner starts off the story with Miss Emily s funeral, where the men see her as a fallen monument (1) and the women are curious about the inside of her house. He draws a picture of a woman who is fragile because she has fallen, but still symbolic and important like a monument. The particulars of Miss Emily s house are very similar to her and symbolize what she stands for. It is set on what had once been the most select street. (1) The narrator, which is the ... Still others may simply allow for airlines to establish their own corporate ground service bases to work independently of other generic airport services (Fuhr amp; Beckers, 2006). Applying any standardized measurement system to something so non standardized presents quite a challenge, if the PMS is too flexible or broad it will not be able to adequately express enough detail to be useful, if it is too rigid it simply won t apply to all of the airports and doesn t allow for change in an inherently volatile industry. Schmidberger s critique of the PMS established throughout European airports is very positive, though it does not place a very high emphasis on establishing this need for balance between detail and flexibility. Schmidberger s report contrasts his proposed PMS with the usual methods of evaluation currently in use at several airports. Most of these measurement systems define airside ground services as subsets of other larger firms (such as airport authorities or airlines) (Chow, Heaver, amp; Henriksson, 1994), this is not necessarily an accurate representation of these ground service entities seeing as in many cases they are quite separate from associated parent companies or completely separate entities wherein logistics are a primary function. • 21. Heat Is The Transfer Of Thermal Energy Between... Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between substances. Thermal energy is the kinetic energy of moving particles of matter. If you go camping, you usually build a fire to sit around at night. Have you ever wondered why a marshmallow cooks without touching the flame, why the smoke rises, or why water in a pan boils? Heat can move from one object to another in three different ways: conduction, convection and radiation. Some sources of heat may include the following: the sun, friction, and the earth. Life on earth depends on the sun. The sun provides heat/light for the entire solar system. A person could generate a fire by rubbing two sticks together. The Earth contains much heat seep inside. Some of the heat escapes to the surface ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thermal energy radiates through air from a fire causing the fire s energy to transfer to the marshmallow. As stated before, thermal conductor occurs when particles of warmer matter bump into particles of cooler matter and transfer some of their thermal energy to the cooler particles. Conduction is usually faster in certain solids and liquids than in gases. Returning to the example of a camp fire; what happens if you use an old metal hangar to roast hot dogs? As the hot dogs cooks, the fire heats the end of the hanger. If we leave the hanger in the fire long enough, eventually the end we are holding will become too hot for us to handle. The flames to the metal were transferred by the heat, and then from molecule to molecule in the hanger. Now, what would have happened if you had chosen a stick to roast your hot dog? Though the stick may have caught fire, it would not have conducted the heat to your hand. This is because wood is a very poor heat conductor. Heat insulators are materials that do not let heat move through them easily. They do not conduct heat well. Plastic, wood and some fabrics are good thermal insulators. Thermal insulators are good at keeping heat out and keeping heat in. A winter scarf is a good example of a thermal insulator. It stops the heat from your body escaping into the cold air. Temperature is defined as the average kinetic energy of the particles of matter. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The youth believes that if they imitate these cynosures they will become affluent and legendary. Famous people imply that if the youth act insubordinately they will be successful in life. Celebrities of today are not appropriate role models for this generation. A celebrity is a famous or well known person, someone who has fame or is renowned (dictionary.com). When people think of a celebrity they think of someone they would see on television, in magazines, or here about on the radio; those are the celebrities I am referring to here, but those aren t the only celebrities out there. There are also other interpretations for the word celebrity. My favorite alternative to the typical thought of a celebrity is the term local celebrity. A local celebrity or hometown celebrity doesn t have to be rich or world famous, they are known for doing something that has either impacted the local area or has made his/her hometown proud. My focus is on the quintessential definition of celebrity, the ones that are known for their influence on the current generation, my generation. The current generation is easily influenced because it is completely focused on being accepted by society and trying to find ones individual identity. The youth of my generation believe that their identity is based on society s acceptance; not on their own thoughts, desires, and opinions of themselves. People born in the years of 1995 to 2010 just missed the age where technology took over childhood, yet still made it to remember few historical events such as 9/11. Since the technology boom, Gen Z humans have many more resources than ever before. With the whole world ahead of them, they can go on to accomplish many things as long as they get passed the negative stereotypes. Generation Z has been labeled lazy, impatient, and entrepreneurial. Although most of the stereotypes are negative, there is some positive in this generation. One of the many stereotypes Generation Z is referred as is lazy . In an article posted by The Huffington Post, it is stated that Gen Z is often portrayed as less engaged in politics; they have short attention spans and don t care about the weighty issues that confront their generation and the nation; and they re more interested in technology and celebrity than staying active in their communities and schools. (Micoleta) Because this generation grew up with google at the touch of their fingers and with smartphones and other hand held devices, they can search anything at any given time without even moving. Although some might consider this lazy, others might argue that it is resourceful. I agree with this lazy stereotype because I have seen first hand how it has affected society. The city was rebuilt and featured incredible structures such as the Hagia Sophia which symbolize the heights the Byzantine culture reached. Specific attributes that made living in such a city so desirable were its trade locations and transportation between three different continents. However, what made the city desirable also made it a target for those who wanted to take advantage of its attributes. Over the next several hundred years, the city was subject to attacks from Persians, Arabs and nomadic people trying to take over the city. Members of the fourth crusade, who also governed the city for a short time, also attacked Constantinople. All these attacked lead to an attack in 1453 by the Ottoman Turks led by Sultan Mehmet II. Due to the constant attacks led by others, the city s defenses were severely weakened, allowing the Ottoman Turks to conquer the city. The city was then renamed to Istanbul, which became the third and last capital of the Ottoman Empire. The city was the center for military campaigns aimed at enlarging the Ottoman empire in a dramatic manor. By the mid 1500 s, the city of Istanbul had a population of nearly 500,000. • 44. Coastal Ecosystems In Florida Florida s coastal ecosystems are one of the greatest assets that Florida has today. An ecosystem is an interacting and interdependent community made up of both living and non living parts. Ecosystems include the air, water, soil, and sunlight as well as all the living organisms present, from the simplest amoeba to the plants and more complex animals that are all a part of the system. There is no size limitation for ecosystems, the entire earth can be considered as a one ecosystem. And so with more coastline than any other state in the contiguous United States, it is a source of economic, environmental and recreational benefits. People come from all over the world to visit the beautiful Florida beaches.1 Coastal uplands are composed of substrate and vegetation influenced primarily by coastal maritime processes such as erosion, deposition, salt spray, and storms with storm surges. Coastal uplands also consist of mesic or xeric communities restricted to barrier islands and near shore with woody or herbaceous vegetation. • 45. My Interview With Mr. Simon Before my interview with Mr. Alan Simon, I had been under the impression that the interviewee had attended a business school. Thus, I was entirely caught off guard when I learned, scarcely a few minutes into the interview, that Mr. Simon did not graduate college with a business degree, but instead graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a computer science degree. Because the first portion of the interview plan I had prepared focused on a business education and its applications beyond the classroom, I was forced to immediately change my opening questions and adapt to the new situation. Questions like why did you choose your particular business major were obviously no longer applicable. However, my improvisational skills, unfortunately, were rather mediocre. I was unable to immediately think of many new, solid questions and so instead chose to reframe my original plan to accommodate for this unexpectedness. For example, I asked how beneficial he believed his computer science degree was in the business world and whether business majors should look to possibly double majoring and minoring in STEM fields, like computer science. Mr. Simon s computer science degree definitely caught me off guard and I believe my hesitation in adapting to it was a big weakness of mine. However, I think I did a relatively all right job in maintaining my composure during this, and continued to maintain eye contact and speak steadily during this portion of the interview. Overall, I felt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Analysis Of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery There is a great deal of tension about the ritual that surrounds the Lottery traditions in Shirley Jackson s short story, The Lottery. Out of fear and superstition, the lottery ceremony continues to exist. In short, the lottery is more of a tradition rather than a ritual at the point we witness in the story, but out of respect and fear for tradition, the towns folks are more than willing to commit an act of mass violence, simply for the sake of a tradition. Born in San Francisco, California on December 14, 1916, Shirley Hardie Jackson was born to Leslie and Geraldine Jackson. Jackson was raised in quite a traditional and well off household, which helped develop themes for later short stories. (Alessio 114) As a young child Jackson loved the subject of witchcraft, and she often spent hours reading various books. She spent a decent amount of her childhood writing poetry and short stories, and eventually moved up north and attended the University of Rochester. (Biography.com) After completing her first year of college, Jackson decided to take a year off and focus on her literature work before moving to a new college; Syracuse University. During her brief pause in her education Jackson would at a minimum, write a thousands of words a day to improve her work. Once the two were married, Hyman received a job as a professor at Bennington College in North Bennington, Vermont where the two settled and also modeled the setting for her well known short story The Lottery.
