Stephen King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies” Essay
examples
It was the summer of 1983; I was reading my first Horror novel by Jay Anson The Amityville
Horror , it was the scariest thing I had ever picked up. Despite the late hours I continued to read
into the early morning hours until my eyes burned for relief. Whenever I got up to use the rest
room I would stand on the end of my bed lean over and open the door and jump so not to be
grabbed by monsters that might be laying in wait under my bed. This started a long love affair for
horror stories.
For instance Stephen King is known as the master of horror; I have read all his older novels.
Watched a few of his movies and discovered the movies are B rated compared to the books. His
newer work is a little more farfetched for me more like Sci Fi, ... Show more content on

However, if I catch the movie before the book comes out I am able to enjoy it more, after watching
movie first; I like to read the book to compare the two.
Last year when the book, Shutter Island reached the book stores I purchased it immediately.
While I was in the middle of reading it the audio book was released, so I decided to download it
to my MP3 player. I located my place in the book and picked up there on my MP3 player so
while following along in my book I listened to the audio. To my surprise the two were very
different, not much that you would say they wrote two different books. Although enough you
could tell the reader was not reading from the same book you were. As I followed along
listening, the reader was adding parts that were not in my book, now these pieces could have
been in the original books manuscript from which he might be reading, but it helped to give
further insight into the story. Having really enjoyed reading this piece, however watching the
movie after reading the book anyone could pick out at least fifteen things that were in the book
that was left out of the movie. I personally believe this is what made the movie a major failure at
the box office. Now you can understand my reasoning for not watching the movies and why I d

Analysis Of The Poem Katherine Mansfield
Introduction: Katherine Mansfield was a well acclaimed author born in 1888. Her literature was in
the form of short stories spanning no more than several passages long. Many dub her as an
innovator in literature for her distinctive use of realism and symbolism which at the time was
foreign to short stories and writing in general. Most authors at the time fabricated fictional worlds
with fantastic characters in their stories but Mansfield was more interested in writing and emerging
her audience into stories about realistic people in everyday environments facing internal
struggle, which gained her much attention. Many of her pieces are also autobiographical as they
subtly reference many moments and mixed emotions that Katherine had... Show more content on

Ms Sheridan and her family are almost unconsciously obsessed by all things pristine and
beautiful, which is where Laura stands outs. She begins to see a new type of world that she was
originally timid of as she was permitted to stay away from people of less fortune. But after she
encounters the workmen preparing the marquee and witnesses there unexpected unintimidating
kindness she instantly turns a new leaf. Appearance also plays a big part in society, if you are
not well received at first glance or dress in a specific way, you will most likely be stereotyped
before you even introduce yourself. Its an arrogant act that is still very present today. A prime
example of this is where Laura complains to her sister Jose about canceling the party due to the
very recent death of a local working man. Joses response, You won t bring a drunken worker back
to life by being sentimental and Laura then furiously replys with Drunk!, who said he was drunk!
.Laura is very empathetic were as Jose is arrogant and blinded by the fantasy .Laura is constantly
battling between her open minded mentality and materialistic upbringing

Food Webs During Mass Extinction
Charles Marshall s article How Stable Are Food Webs During Mass Extinctions? reflects on the
current human driven mass extinction occurring today (Marshall). Researchers are wondering
what will happen to the food web after the mass extinction humans are creating occurs and
finishes. To find out the effects that may occur, Marshall brings up the subject of prehistoric food
webs and the changes brought upon them from mass extinctions. Using prehistoric fossil records
and devising these animals into guilds, either carnivores or herbivores, they made a food web for
these extinct creatures. Roopnarine and Angielczyk are examples of the people who work on
creating these food webs that Marshall uses in his article. These two people focus on the... Show

study earlier extinctions and how they happened and the events following them. This article is not
the best kind of article read, there are too many questions left that the reader feels left out. Also,
the article has many large words that do not make much sense to the average reader, causing
greater confusion on what is actually being read and how it relates to the lives of the reader. It

Dangers Of Sex Education
Surprisingly, only 24 states offer mandatory sex education in America. Most people who are
opposed to sex education say that they think their teenagers are too young and innocent to
understand sex education. However the website, ReCAPP.org reported in 2014 that 47% of 12th
grade high school students reported having sex of which thirteen to nineteen percent of U.S. teens
starting having sex at age 15. Teenagers obviously are having sex, and may not be forced to abstain
from sex. So mandatory sex educationmakes sense to teach as many teenagers as possible about
how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies, rape, and other dangers associated with
underage sex, especially STDs (sexually transmitted diseaseincluding HIV/AIDSand Herpes Virus).
Therefore, sex education should become mandatory for all 14 year old freshmen in high
schools, in order to guarantee these teenagers are not too young to understand about the dangers
of sex before many of them start having sex by age 15. One reason that sex education should
become mandatory in all high schools, is because many teens may otherwise live in denial or be
illiterate about sex due to lack of parental teaching, thereby being ignorant about how to avoid the
dangers of sex. Parents, above all should not live in denial about their teens having sex. Yet, too
many parents admit they simply avoid the topic, or fail to properly teach their children about the
dangers of sex. For example, college friends admit that they hide

Thief Film Themes
However, this rejection that these characters have also seems to be a symbol of male anxiety. The
characters always seem to be dispatched by their male equivalents. Looking at Heat again, when
Neil Mc Cauley is dying, he reaches out gesturing to hold Vincent s hand, squeezing it tightly. This
scene cries out as a testimony to Michael Mann s recurring interest in the relationship between the
professional opposites which almost always seems to result in a metaphysical displacement that is
strangely elevating.
In Thief (1981) which was Mann s feature film debut, laid out a thematic blueprint that his later
work would follow. Frank s character played by James Caan strives to create a family with Jessie

The double is the battle between the protagonist and the antagonist in Mann s film. The double
always seems to be men with opposite professions. But still professions that take place or follow
those that are in the urban night. In Collateral Vincent (Tom Cruise) is a hitman whilst Max
(Jamie Foxx) is a taxi driver. In Heat Neil Mc Cauley is a criminal whilst Vincent (Al Pacino) is
a cop. The expressionistic use of urban architecture in Mann s films (concreate, glass, steel)
highlights the estrangement that postmodernism creates between people. This mirror image theme
is most visible in the Manhunter . Will Graham (William Petersen), chases after the notorious
tooth fairy serial killer because he is able to place himself in the same mind set as the killer in
order to catch him. His psychological instincts and suppressed self, contain an inner self that is
unnatural and vexatious. This theme of mirror images is also present in Collateral . When Max is
forced to confront his boss about being exploited about, we see the contempt that Vincent has for
authority and power in general. Max wants to get rid of Vincent because he is a constant reminder
of his failure to take appropriate action in his life. Max is totally at the mercy of the social forces
and unable to negotiate which unlike Vincent who is a hitman has a detachment from this
empowerment that he has constructed through identifying his male

Explain Why Gay And Lesbian Parents Should Have A Home
Do you think that every child in an orphanage or the foster system should have a home? Is it fair to
deprive kids of a home because their parents would be gay or lesbian? How will Children who are
raised by gay or lesbian parents be effected when they are older? These are a few important
questions concerning same sex couples who are looking to adopt. Answering the first question,
yes I think every child deserves to have a home, and I think that most people would agree. The
answer to the second question, Is it fair to deprive kids of a home because their parents would be
gay or lesbian? is no it is not fair at all, and the answer to the last question is we cannot be sure
because every child is different, and so are every pair of parents. I am pro for same sex couples to

The rate of straight couples getting a divorce is at two percent, but the rate for lesbian couples is
1.6 percent and the rate for gay couples is even lower at 1.1 percent. This is good because that
means that a child who is adopted by a gay or lesbian couple is probably going to have a more
emotionally secure home, and their parents will probably stay together. Another reason that Gay
and Lesbian couples should be allowed to adopt is because there aren t many people willing to
adopt children, so any good people no matter what their sexuality is should be allowed to adopt.
These children could go into the foster system, but adopting is much better, and it can be safer.
Same sex couples have to plan to want children, instead of accidentally having them. This means
that because they cannot naturally have their own children with their spouse, so they have to find
a donor, surrogate or they have to adopt. This also means that the child will also know that they
were always wanted and were never a

Essay on The Adaptive Parasite
The Adaptive Parasite
Viruses are molecular sharks, a motive without a mind. They have sorted themselves into tribes, and
they infect everything that lives. . . . Unknown viruses are coming out of the equatorial
wildernesses of the earth and discovering the human race. . . . You might call AIDS the revenge of
the rainforest. (Preston 160 61)
After reading Richard Preston s ominous and threatening portrayal of viruses in his article Crisis In
The Hot Zone, one may be alarmed enough to invest in surgical scrubs and a space suit to wear as a
permanent precaution against these evidently vengeful creatures. In truth, there are lethal viruses
that exist for which there is currently no vaccine or cure, and there are various ... Show more content

The process of evolution results when organisms reproduce more individuals than the
environment can support, genetic variation naturally and inevitably occurs, the organisms that
are the most successful within their habitat survive, and those that are deficient and weak are
eliminated. The survivors of this ecological pressure are able to flourish, reproduce, and pass
their favorable genes onto subsequent generations. Many biologists believe that viruses evolved
after the appearance of the first cells and favor the hypothesis that they originated from
fragments of cellular nucleic acids, [DNA or RNA], that could move from one cell to another
within an organism (Campbell, Mitchell, and Reece 330). This theory asserts that a portion of
DNA or RNA initially became separated from the remainder of the cell s genome, and the newly
formed virus then migrated into another cell. Isolated fragments of DNA or RNA would be
biologically inert; therefore, viruses have been engineered by the forces of evolution to maximize
their survival as mobile, parasitic organisms (Preston 159). Viruses, as mere segments of nucleic
acids, have developed various adaptations that ensure their reproduction, their transport from cell to
cell, and their survival at the expense of another organism.
Viruses have adapted a dependency on the cells of another organism, termed a host, to provide both
shelter and a metabolic means of reproduction. Different viruses have evolved

A Historical Context Of Reinforcement
Part A: Historical Context of Reinforcement
In the behavioral science the term, reinforcement signifies strengthening a behavior. Many learning
theories consist of some form of strengthening or weakening a behavior, in which withholding or
presenting reinforcement may decrease or increase the future occurrence of a behavior (Skinner,
1953). The application of reinforcement varies between theorists and the type of learning implied.
Ivan Pavlov (1928) demonstrated the use of reinforcement was connected between the pairings of
an unconditioned stimulus (UCS) and a conditioned stimulus (CS). Pavlov s experiments consisted
of presenting meat powder, an unconditioned stimulus to a dog and as a result the dog produced
salivation. A bell tone,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His subjects were placed in a puzzle box and Thorndike timed how long it took for the cats to
escape. Throughout the experiment, the cats found a lever that opened the cage door. After their
escape, Thorndike placed the cats back into the cage and after repeated trials the cats learned
that pressing the lever would result in a satisfying consequence. The cats behaviors of opening
the lever were reinforced by the favorable consequence of escape. His work led to the
development of instrumental conditioning, which focuses learning from the consequences of
responses. Ten years after his first study, the notion of response reinforcement was introduced
through the Law of Effect , which stated, responses made to the same situation, those which are
accompanied or closely followed by satisfaction to the animal will, other things being equal, be
more firmly connected with the situation, so that, when it recurs, they will be more likely to
recur (Thorndike, 1911, p. 250). Essentially, a response that is followed by a favorable consequence
is likely repeat and a response that is followed by an aversive consequence will not reoccur.
B.F. Skinner modified Thorndike s law of effect principle into what Skinner (1938) called the term,
operant conditioning, in which through the application of reinforcement, a behavior changes for a
more desire response. Skinner (1948) observed operant conditioning through his experiment

ADI Egg Lab Report
ADI Egg Lab Ritika Sharma
Section 1:
During the egg lab there was one guiding question we were trying to figure out. Which was what
effect do different solutions (maple syrup, mouth wash, and saltwater) have on cell size? Before we
started this lab we had to have our background information which was osmosis is when water
moves from a high concentration to a low concentration through a membrane. We also had to
know that hypotonic is when water is moving into the cell and the cell swells/expands.
Hypertonic is when water is moving out of the cell and the cell is shrinking. Isotonic is when an
equal amount of water is moving in and out of the cell at the same rate. The goal of the experiment

The guiding question relates to our background info because in order to know the effect the
different solution had on the cell size we had to know our terminology, which was included in the
background information.
Section2:
For this lab we had to follow certain procedures. We had to first gather 3 eggs and 3 cups. Put
one egg in each cup then we had to get the 3 solutions that were being used for the experiment,
which was mouthwash, syrup, and salt water. We labeled the cups for which solution went
which what egg and then we had to measure each egg before putting it in the substance for 24
hours. To measure we got a string and wrapped it around each egg to get its circumference then
we took that measurement(the circumference of the string) and converted the string to a ruler to
find out the circumference. We did that for all three eggs and recorded that data down. Then we
put the eggs into their cup marked with their solution and waited 24 hours to record the data
again. We then got another egg for our control and measured it the same way as the other eggs
and put in water for 24 hours. The reason we used this set of procedures is so our experiment
would be very accurate, and easy to do so we would

Cormac McCarthy s thriller, No Country for Old Men, is a story exploding with violence, drug
deals, greed, murder, and the ongoing battle between good and evil in the world today. Driven
by the pessimistic belief that little can be done to right the wrongs in the world, Sheriff Ed Tom
Bell continually compares the world today to the world he grew up in one where good always
triumphed evil. It is clear that Sheriff Bell believes that evil is a side of human nature that little
can be done about to fix. Llewelyn Moss is a man caught in the midst of this great battle, often
having to choose one side for the sake of his life. Although he frequently chooses evil, he is

On September 11, 2001, the United States witnessed its worst attack on U.S. soil since the

aircraft and managed to crash two of them in to the Twin Towers in New York City. When the

the United States: the war on terror. These events left President George Bush with a complex and

Before diving into the changes, it is necessary to understand why Osama bin Laden orchestrated
such an elaborate attack on the United States. Osama bin Laden, although once an American
ally, turned enemy against the United States for several reasons. First and foremost, Bin Laden
condemns American support for Israel and the billions it received in aid. Moreover, the United
States being a foreign democratic power has no right to enter the House of Islam as it did during
the Persian Gulf War in 1991 with a military presence in Egypt. Politically and socially, the
United States is the diametric opposite of bin Laden s beliefs and goals. It is bin Laden s goal to
remove the United States out of the Middle East by crippling it domestically. However, President
Bush is in no position to acquiesce his wishes. Terrorism has no role in the modern world and on
September 20, 2001, President Bush made his intentions clear when he stated, We will starve
terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is
no refuge or no rest...Either you are with us or you are against us with the terrorists. President

Faulkner Writing Style
If the purpose of your story is to unfold the secrets at the center of your hero s life, then there is
no reason the key events or revelations need to be presented in the calendar order in which they
occurred. What is more important is that there is a march toward understanding, a sense we are
drawing ever closer to the truth wherever it may lie (Blake, 2). This statement sounds like
something I believe Faulkner would say. Faulkner s imagination was very great and this made him
a great writer. Faulkner even went to the extent of creating his own town in Yoknapatawpha
Mississippi (Meyer, 77). William Faulknerwas a great author that has amazed people throughout the
years. A statement he mentioned when he accepted his Nobel Prize really stuck to me. Problems of
the human heart in conflict with itself...alone can make good writingbecause only that is worth
writing about, worth the agony and the sweat (Faulkner, 77). Faulkner s writing style differs from
other authors because it is written in non chronological order, which opens the door to exciting
mysteries and excitement throughout the story unlike the film versions of stories such as A Rose
for Emily, which is predictable due to the sequence of event. Due to this, many individuals that
read books tend to like them more than the actual film that is developed. This can be said for many
movies including recent movies that have been released such as Harry Potter and Twilight.

Ever since I was young, I remember being completely fascinated with science, and specifically

many social issues that people are focused on, and some people have started to ignore other
living creatures. This has struck me. As I ve been getting older, I feel, more and more, like I can

Further I Prefer the realistic, because happily ever after in not a convincing endings except for

were more conservative than those days, it is not allowed to love or to date someone, and this is

Red Jacket and Olaudah Equiano have different opinions on the people of the United States of
America because they had different roles and were in different situations, they were in different
locations, and they experienced different types of treatment and behavior. Olaudah Equiano was a
captured African from Benin; his home in Western South Africa. He worked as a slave in Barbados
and Virginia but surprisingly bought his freedom and headed to England to support the British anti
slavery movement. He learned how to read and write in English while settled in Great Britain.
This led to him writing about his experience of being a slave and all the horrific sights he saw. He
wrote a piece about him being captured and sent to the ship. He talked about his journey, shows the
knowledge, and education he had back then. He wrote about the Americans and what he thought
about them. He also mentions the treatment the Africans were getting. On the other hand, Red
Jacket had the role of a Native American Chief, he was a prominent leader of the Native American

Female Frog Clovers
A news study has found that ponds in suburban areas have almost twice the proportion of female
frogs to male frogs than isolated, forest bound ponds. The estrogen in suburban wastewater disrupts
frogs reproductive systems, causing them to spawn far more female frogs than male frogs, and in
effect threatening the entire species and ecosystem.
The study was done by Yale University and compared the proportions of frog sexes between 21
suburban ponds and isolated ponds in southwestern Connecticut. Its findings were published in the
latest issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
End of an Era for Male Frogs
In the wild, the study found, male frogs outnumber female frogs, accounting for almost 60 percent
of the frog population. But in suburban areas, it s a different story: female frogs account for more
than 60 percent of frog populations, nearly doubling the rate of male frogs.

Suburban Housewives?
Actually, the estrogen that is bringing about so many female frogs has nothing to do with the
female humans who live nearby. But it has everything to do with clovers.
Clovers? Yes, clovers are just one of several common lawn plants that naturally produce
phytoestrogens. When plants like clovers occur in unnatural concentrations as they do in the grassy
suburbs, phytoestrogen levels in water become high enough to alter the biology of water bound
animals.
Amphibians are especially susceptible. While the study focused on green frogs as a common North
American amphibian species, the same results are predicted for toads, newts, and salamanders.
Further studies will investigate whether these phytoestrogens are even affecting the reproduction of
birds and mammals.

Friedel-Crafts Acylation Lab Report
The Friedel Crafts acylation reaction is an important and valuable electrophilic aromatic substitution
reaction. First introduced in 1912 by Charles Friedel and James M. Crafts, this reaction allows large
multi step reactions to take place, and creates numerous types of products.1 Today, Friedel Crafts
reactions are among the most used electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. In the electrophilic
aromatic substitution class of reactions, functional groupsare substituted onto an aromatic ring.2
Products such as ketones, hydrocarbons and phenols, phenol ethers, and keto acids can be produced
by electrophilic aromatic substitution.1 These products can then undergo other reactions, allowing
for the creation of many types of products. The products acquired can be used for a range of
purposes, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, etcetera.3 In particular, Friedel Crafts acylation
reactions result in a product containing a ketone.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The functional group added during a Friedel Crafts acylation reaction, deactivates the ring, resulting
in a mono substituted ring rather that a poly substituted ring, which is produced from a Friedel

substituted ring instead of yielding a product containing a ketone. To obtain the ketone product, an
acyl group is added to an aromatic ring. However, for this reaction to take place, no electron
withdrawing groups can be present on the aromatic ring, and an acyl halide must be used to obtain
the acyl cation.5 These limitations are met, in the Friedel Crafts acylation reaction of anisole with

Well, the sitting on 4 acres the hospital encompasses Ronald Regan UCLA Medical center,
Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA and Mattel Children s Hospital
UCLA. Some key features I found extremely helpful is their organization. Every floor of Ronald
Reagan UCLA Medical Center is devoted to a specific specialty and equipped with all of the
essential support equipment and supplies. Every floor has its own satellite pharmacy, dialysis
storage, respiratory therapy workrooms, and resident doctor sleep rooms. Additionally; each
patient room has the ability to convert into an intensive care unit (ICU) to allow for the
continuous care of a critically ill patient in one room. This makes caring for patients extremely

When it jumped into the spotlight in the 1060 s, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson quickly put a new
view on the impact of humans on the environment. The author of Silent Spring use ecocriticism to
persuade people and to think about the environment differently. We can see that Rachel Carson s

Western Imperialism Essay
Western Imperialism
Beginning in 1880, there was a growing desire for European countries to expand and control their
rule. The only continent at that time that was left uncontrolled and, in the European s eyes
uncivilized, was Africa. This was the start of Western Imperialism. All European countries wanted
their piece of Africa and to get it, they would let nothing stand in their way. They would change the
entire government, religion, market, and behavior of most of the African nation and affect almost
every person living there. An account of the impact of Imperialism is given in Chinua Achebes
Things Fall Apart. This book shows the changes that occurred in Africa during Imperialism and its
affect on the community and the people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Things Fall Apart there is a good example of this. The tribe of the main character Okonkwo
has a polytheistic religion that they have followed for as long as they can remember. When the
Europeans get there they build a church and the missionaries that came get many of the people to
convert to Christianity. Okonkwo is one of the few who sticks to the traditional view and keeps
his original religion. This changing of religion was a very important event that occurred in Africa
but another important result of Imperialism in Africa was a change in Government. When the
Europeans got to Africa they brought with them their governments and enforced them as if they
were the new governments of the Africans. Most African tribes had their own government system
that they had developed over time. When the Europeans settled in Africa they totally dismissed
these government and inflicted their own government on these people. In Things Fall Apart, the
elders of the village make the laws, which the people live by. They also have a ritual called the
Egwugwu in which the leaders of the village dress up as Gods and give laws and direction to the
villagers. When the Europeans get there they dismiss the laws the elders have made and live under
their own government. At one point a villager influenced by a European leader unmasks the leaders
during Egwugwu, which in their society is totally unacceptable. As more and more control was

Malaysian Airlines made no profit since 2010. In last three years, Malaysia Airlines booked
losses of US $1.25 billion. The company s stock fell by 20% following the disappearance of
Flight MH370 and had fallen 80% over the previous five years. Following the disappearance,
ticket sale had declined. Especially in China it was down by 60% in the month of March. Also,

Industrialization Impact
Industrialization
Industrialization had many different impacts in American history. One of the impacts that
industrialization had was increasing wealth in the U.S. Many business managers, and investors
/entrepunuer took financial risks of starting factories and they earned many rewards. By factory
s, the overall amount of goods and services started increasing, because of the fact that factory s
can produce goods much faster than a human. However men were still needed to operate the
machines, and there were job opportunities. This led to the increase of population in the United
States. Many immigrants traveled to the u.s to escape the harsh life s they have been living, they
thought these job opprutinitys were a way to start a new life, a new beginning, this is why
industrialization also increased population in the U.S. American ingenuity and also was on the rise
and people thought of many new inventions to make life easier. There was also an abundance of
resources so they did not need to worry about resources for their inventions.
There were many major inventions, however the Bessemer process was the first inexpensive
industrial process to mass produce steel from iron. It inspired and sparked the industrial revolution,
it was a big scale project. The Bessemer process worked by taking out impurities from pig iron
using as an air blast. Andrew Carnegie s time was dedicated to the steel industry. His business,

urbanization taking the heart and soul out of small rural towns is crushing. Growing up in a small

Public Employment Relations Boards ( Perbs )
Public Employment Relations Boards (PERBs) are federal government or state appointed agencies
that are responsible for resolving collective bargaining disputes, determining the bargaining units,
monitoring representing elections, selecting a bargaining agent and solving the employment and
labor related disputes of employees working in the public sector. Bargaining is the process
through which employers and employees negotiate the terms of work and set them down in a
formal contract that lays out all of the rules and regulations. Each side nominates a representative,
so both labor and management are able to convey their terms and conditions and reach a mutually
satisfactory agreement. Public Employment Relations Boards (PERBs) also ensure that the
employees of public sector departments are not at the receiving end of any unfair labor practices.
This paper will examine three Public Employment Relations Boards, the ones for California,
Delaware and the District of Columbia. The California Public Employment Relations Board is
responsible for governing a total of eight collective bargaining statutes relevant to public sector
employees of the state of California. These employees include those individuals, who are working

First Battle Of Ypres Essay
The last allied defensive line which stood in the way of the Germans from setting foot on
english territory resided in Ypres, Belgium. This was the last defence against the German army s
race to the sea. The significance of this battle for the allied forces, including the belgian army was
the importance of Ypres as it represented the last significant settlement in belgium before the battle
would have leaked into France, or the Atlantic Ocean. The German army lacked morality as they
annihilated the city of Ypres in the process of counter battery. The social impact for the allied

Perhaps it was because I m Catholic and not Pentecostal. Everyone in the sanctuary was moving
around and socializing. Members of the church walked to the front of the altar and praised by
the means of the Holy Spirit. It was a lot the different than my church but it was really a great
experience. The members of the church raise their hands, kneel to god, and speak in tongues.
Speaking in tongues simply means speaking to God in a way that they don t understand
themselves because the Holy Spirit fills their body. Another thing that was different about this
church was the choir. Their choir was amazing and every selection they sung made me feel good
inside. I got chills from some of the notes they hit. This church was very prompt and orderly. It
started with a prayer from one of the Deacons of the church. The deacon openly asked the
congregation for prayer requests and testimonies. One young lady gave a testimony about how
she wanted to thank God for letting her see another day and healing her from cancer. It was also
a special service honoring the Olive Branch Police Department. I ve never seen anything like that
during a church service, it was really amazing and touching. Another thing they did that was
uncommon to me was an altar call. Towards the end of the service Elder Shannon called for an
altar call. Altar call is when the members of the church go up to the altar for prayer.

Isolation In Art Analysis
Like all art, there are endless ways for this piece to be interpreted evoking countless emotions
depending on the experiences of the person. The goal of an artist, is to inspire thought and
conversation, which this piece does beautifully. The best thing about snow, is how it can
completely change the atmosphere of a scene. When I look at the piece, I can feel the cold and
hear the deafening silence that comes with a winter storm. I love that snow can lead to some many
sensations, from feeling cozy and safe by the fire, to a cold dreadful feeling of complete isolation.

The Recollection Of A Failure In My Family
Not every family is as picture perfect as they seem. In my family, we like to take family photos
to show our growth and to get to see each other all together. While these family photos are always
pleasant beforehand, they turn out to be a total disaster. Just a couple weeks ago my family had our
pictures taken. The photos turned out extremely well, but if only the camera could see the turbulent
ride that led to a disaster at our house. There were so many people with attitudes and the
atmosphere was so chaotic that everyone was stressed out of their minds.
My first recollection of an event like this would be at my aunt Lori s house. Her husband, my cousin
, and her two daughters live there as well. My cousin is thirty five and her two daughters are
fourteen and nine years old. We also have a black lab that lives with us as well. To start out the
day we all have breakfast at home. Which consisted of french toast, sausage, and hashbrowns. At
this point in time everyone is happy. No attitudes, fighting, or even a scent of bad behavior. After
breakfast is where it starts to go downhill.
It s about 10:30 AM and pictures are at 12:30 AM. We all go our separate ways and start to get
ready and not even 15 minutes my two cousins are fighting over a small, pink, hair brush. A stupid
hair brush. Which is crazy because they have about twenty in the whole house and they only fight
over it because the other one has it. After about three minutes, the anger spread to their mother who

Your Beliefs, Alignments, And Interest
Flexibility of your beliefs, alignments, and interest are the only ways to be truly authentic. No one
at any given moment should be ascribed a definition. The human spirt is simply too intertwined
with others and with the world to limit itself. Reasonably so, language the medium that facilitates
these interpersonal connections is also dynamic. Language, as well as people, can freely change
depending on the present situation. The ever flowing ways of language allows the user s identity
to effortlessly proceed. The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguist states that identities are how
we represent who we are to ourselves and others and how we interpret who others are (Joseph
2006). More importantly, to not establish a sole identity allows the other interlocutor more freedom
to use desired speech styles thus discover an aspect of their own identity. To test the strength of my
identity, I recorded two conversations with interlocutors that I have vastly different connections and
then analyzed the perceptions of myself to the outside world. The first conversation was with my
roommate and teammate, Baily Christian. Even though we have only known each other for one
month, during the past four weeks we have spent countless hours together and have slept within 5
feet every night. To say the least, we are pretty familiar with each other. The conversation took

this was based loosely on true events that were reported in New York papers in 1983. I think that
its greatest weakness was its break in its message. While Ouisa and Flan tell their story about Paul,
they constantly turn to the audience and break the fourth wall. While doing that sometimes can be
beneficial, they do it practically every other line. I got confused when they kept switching, always

Working Class Underachievement
Contemporary views are that class is still the most significant social factor for accounting for
differences in educational achievement. It seems that middle class children tend to do better than
working class children. Most sociologists believe that in every social class there is the same range
of ability, this means that class differences in educational attainment are not due to class differences
in intelligence, but due to other circumstances such as the home and socialization. However some
sociologists would argue that attainment in classes results from sifting, sorting and assessment of
pupils in terms of teacher s perceptions of class, ability and conduct. Throughout this essay, the
view that working class underachievers in schoolis... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory states that those at the bottom of the class system are deprived of important values,
attitudes, experiences and skills which are essential for educational success. Their home life lacks
the kind of stimulation needed for high attainment, for example, the absence of books and
educational toys. Basil Bernstein identified two forms of speech pattern, the restricted code and
the elaborate code. The restricted code is a kind of shorthand speech. In comparison, in the
elaborated code, meanings are made explicit, explanations are provided and details are spelt out.
According to Bernstein, most middle class children have been socialised in both the restricted and
elaborated codes whereas many working class children are limited to the restricted code. As
teachers use the elaborated code, working class children have an immediate disadvantage and may
be criticised for misunderstanding. Working class children learn this language code at home,
therefore being another reason for underachievement in school being related to home
circumstances. Further more, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu starts from the idea that
there is a dominant culture in society. Children born into the middle class have a built in
advantage. Their culture is closer to the culture of the school so they will be more likely to
succeed, their language is closer to that of the teachers so they will be more likely to

Robert Peel s Nine Principles
Sir Robert Peel is an icon in the history of policing, just as is Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Civil
Rights Movement. It is virtually impossible for one to learn police history, or study policing in
general for that matter, without gaining knowledge about Peel and his principles. Furthermore, the
same could be said for taking a political science class, and not learning the differences between the

destructions, of society s well being, depending on one s perspective. As we all are aware, the
emotions and temperaments of individuals are heightened when politics are involved. First and
foremost, Peel not only revised and organized the field of policing, he also was the blame for
destroying the conservative party in the nineteenth century (Evans, 2006). He perceived himself
as an economic reformist which lead to the creation of the Corn Laws (Evans, 2006). He had the
ideology that removing and/or reducing taxes would be in the best interest of society. Thus, he
went against his party s wishes and removed all tariffs from corn resulting in a crisis (Evans,

Essay The Importance of Fallout Shelters
A fallout shelter is a shelter that was used in a time of need. From 1947 to 1991, fallout shelters
were a big hit during the Cold war. The fallout shelter represents the atomic age and how families
got through nuclear attacks. A lot was contributed in the making of these shelters, and they kept
families together. Time and effort to keep America safe is what made these shelters important to
American History. Not only are the fallout shelters a symbol of the cold warand fear, but it also
significantly impacted America because they protected Americans from radioactive debris, gave
America shelter in a time of war, and it reduced casualties.

Along with packing enough material for the time being, a shelter plan is a must (Bomb Shelter
Guide). Before the shelters, the issue of the Cold War and nuclear attack were introduced and it
induced panic ( Kennedy Urges Americans to Build Bomb Shelters ). As the nuclear attack was
seen as a threat to Americans, Cuba had already received nuclear missiles. Cuba s nuclear missile
attack was known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, in which the USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba.
This event resulted in the 13 days crisis. The 13 days crisis was tense, and during this time
period, Americans began to stock up on canned foods. Canned food was the only food Americans
shopped for because none of the shelters had refrigeration, and there were no stoves or microwaves
( The Family Fallout Shelter Nebraska). Games like Monopoly, or cards were often played in the
shelters to pass time by. Girls often had diaries to write in about how living in the shelter was like.
We ve suffered a war, and one thing we know: Whenever our nation s faced war, whether it was
in the 1980s when we were winning the Cold War or in the 1940s during World War II, the
responsible thing to do has been to borrow money to win the war (Mehlman). On top of Americans
having shelter, fear and casualties were reduced ( Fallout Shelters).Washington was the main focal
point of the nuclear threat, and because of that, these shelters were offered for their protection and
safety. To promote fallout shelters in

Julian Bond Biography
There is a thin line between politics and theatricals Julian Bond, a government official, educator,
and civil rights activist. Born on January 14, 1940, at the age of 25 in 1965 he was elected for
Georgia s state legislature; died on August 15, 2015 ending his journey at the age of 75 but
leaving iconic history behind. Mr. Bond was born in Nashville, Tennessee. His family moved to
Pennsylvania at his age of five due to the fact that his father was the first African American
president of Lincoln University. In 1957, he enrolled in Atlanta s Morehouse College. He became
a member of a committee to appeal Human Rights while still being a student. Mr. Bond hosted
protests against segregation all over public places in Atlanta. Years later, in the 60 s he helped

Privatization Of Public Assets For New Public...
On March 26th, Finance Minister, Mathias Cormann announced that the Government owned health
insurance company, Medibank Private, would be sold on initial public offering. This announcement
made Commonwealth treasurer, Joe Hockey, confident toward selling billions of dollars of public
assets. In return, the Abbott Government will help unlock funding for new public infrastructure
projects through reinvestment of the sale proceeding from existing Government owned assets. The
Commonwealth will provide states and territories incentive payments of 15 per cent of the sale

Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, through a written letter in which Fraser clearly opposes
the proposed sale of Medibank Private in 2006. With this arguments, the article encourages the

Summary Of For That He Look Not Upon Her By George Gascoigne
The poem, For That He Looked Not upon Her by George Gascoigne exemplifies how the speaker
suffered from love, something that many people believe one should feel positive about. The title
delivers a despairing tone by allowing the audience to believe that the speaker can no longer look
the woman he loved in the eye. Conflicting with the despairing tone, the speaker develops a
complex attitude with the use of structure, metaphors, diction, and desire. The structure and tone
of the poem enhance the conflict and hopelessness the speaker is feeling towards the woman he
loves and desires. For the first twelve lines of the poem there is an abab rhyming pattern. This ties
into the despairing and desirable tone and how the rhyming scheme can be an example of the
speaker constantly going back and forth between emotions for this women. For example, And that
mine eyes take no delight to range About the gleams which on your face do grow. (Gascoigne 3 4)
are two phrases that contradict the speakers feelings. Stating that his eyes take no delight in range
can refer to the speaker finding no use or happiness in looking at the woman. Although, he then
mentions the gleams upon her face growing, giving the audience the idea that even though the
speakers lovefor the woman causes him deep despair, he still desires her enough to describe her
features in attentive detail; in this example the gleams on her face. This shows the back and forth
pattern and the speakers struggle when it comes

Cangrelor, a potent intravenous, reversible, platelet P2Y12 inhibitor, was recently approved by
both the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines
Agency (EMA) as an adjunct for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The approval was based
on Cangrelor versus Standard Therapy to Achieve Optimal Management of Platelet Inhibition
(CHAMPION) PHOENIX (1), a multi center, double dummy, double blind trial, which randomized
11,145 patients with stable angina, non ST segment elevation acute coronary syndromeor ST
segment elevation myocardial infarction to receive cangrelor or clopidogrel at the time of PCI.
CHAMPION PHOENIX (1) demonstrated that cangrelor significantly reduced the rate of ischemic
events without increasing severe bleeding. In the original analysis, bleeding was site reported by
the blinded investigators according to pre specified definitions and was not adjudicated. While
the EMA accepted this approach, during FDA review, the sponsor and the FDA independently re
evaluated bleeding in a post hoc, non blinded manner. This evaluation included potential bleeding
data not necessarily captured on the bleeding case report form (CRF) by the investigator, and
findings were categorized and interpreted according to jointly agreed criteria based on previously
published bleeding classifications. For example, there was a field in the CRF called drop in
hemoglobin or hematocrit ; the review re checked the laboratory dataset for

Pausanias Idea Of Love In Plato s Symposium
Eros, the God of Love, was held in high respect throughout all of ancient Greece due to Love s
contributions to the culture and relationships amongst individuals. However, in Plato Symposium,
each guest has their own unique perspective on the role Eros plays. Among those gathered at the
Symposium, speeches are offered with anything from exalting words of praise to honest words of
criticisms. Pausanias and Agathon, guests at the symposium, are romantic partners, each with their
own views on Love. Pausanias idea of Love is based off the idea that there are two different types
of Love, and he emphasizes the importance of intent and virtue. While Agathon, the more passive
of the two, expresses his praise for Erosas an entity and His divinity... Show more content on

Pausanias says People are right to condemn the hasty and immoral demands which the vulgar
lover makes upon his prey, (Plato, 181e 182a). His belief that lust for physical pleasure is
beyond the bounds of being morally justified and therefore believes that consequences should be
welcomed. Pausanias places value on the idea of intellectual growth between Lovers and
therefore opposes his formed concept of Common Love. In addition to criticizing the
undiscriminating nature of Common Love, Pausanias criticizes Heavenly Love s tendency to
instill in individuals the attraction to young boys. However, Pausanias does justify this
variation of Love by explaining that a prospering relationship can come from Heavenly Love
due to the naive nature of young boys being allowed to be nurtured mentally by somebody more
mature with virtue and merit. But in direct opposition, Pausanias also expresses how he
vehemently opposes those individuals who take advantage of the young and unwise boys and
women for a solely sexual relationship. Through these criticisms, he is proposing that Love isn t
always honorable. Pausanias states that Love, in and of itself, is neither honorable nor
disgraceful, since its character and quality must be determined by the way in which it is carried
out (Plato, 183d). He is expressing that Love alone can not be characterized as being entirely good
or entirely bad but the intent and way love is conveyed must also be taken into consideration when
judging

Thoughtful Word Choice In Toni Morrison s Strangers
Thoughtful word choice certainly gives substance and meaning to pieces of writing. This is
demonstrated in Toni Morrison s Strangers. Morrison explores the human tendency to make
presumptions and the causes and effects of it. She immerses the reader in her thought processes
after her experience. The images she sets for the reader are intensified with her emotional
descriptions and meaningful verbs. They vividly support Morrison s thoughts on the preconceived
notions one makes about people. Firstly, stages of emotions are prominent throughout the events.
Morrison pours out her personal feelings to reinforce the effects of her experience. She explains
feeling cheated, puzzled, but also amused (Morrison 130). The conflicting feelings of being

are short REM sleeps and long periods of deep sleep.
Stage 1 is a type of sleep where you drift in and out of your sleep. You can be easily awake. The

children experience bedwetting, sleepwalking, and or has night terrors. In 2008 the sleep
professionals eliminated the use of stage 4. And stages 3 4 are what most people experience.
Slow waves sleep comes mostly in the first half of your sleep. (REM) is the second half. Walking
may occur after (REM) if the walking period is long enough, the person may remember it the next
morning. Infants spend almost 50% of their time in (REM) sleep. Adults spend nearly half of their
sleep in stage 2, older adults spend less time in their (REM) sleep.
To get the most of our sleep both quantity and quality are important. Adults need about 8 hours and
on average 9 ВЅ hours of interrupted sleep. Sleep helps us thrive by contributing to a healthy
immune system, and can also balance our appetites by helping to regulate levels of the hormones
ghrelin and leptin which play a role in our feelings.

A Supposed Lower Status and The Ensuing Hatred Essay
The society of our modern world is one that has been bombarded with intolerance and
discrimination. People discriminate against the weak, the unintelligent, the uncool, and the racially

correcting this racial chauvinism, our modern day world reflects the reality that a prejudice still
exist, live and active, in our communities today. In the past, during the time of the Little Rock Nine,
prejudice was focused against the culturally and racially different, but today, while the prejudice
has been greatly reduced, it has refocused and is now directed on a greater scale against a larger,

Innovations In The Late 19th Century
1. Describe some of the events and scientific discoveries that shook the late nineteenth century s
confidence in the idea of progress. What effect did these events have on music, literature, and the
arts?
Despite the incredible advancements from the scientific world in the late nineteenth century, the
rapidly developing industry had its dark side. Telephones, automobiles, and airplanes were in their
early stages of development, and were all crashing into people s worlds at an a dangerously fast
pace. Contrary to the welcomed progress of such periods as the Enlightenment, the overwhelming
influx of new ideas was too much, and, as shown many times throughout history, the arts followed
the thoughts of the time. Although this time, it was not the celebration of progress, but a look into
the pessimistic side of it. Modernism. Feeling as though they could no longer put their faith in
anything, artists turned away from science, religion, and the reliability of the human mind. Painters
abandoned reality, writers shunned traditional structure, and musicians ignored logic. The faster the
innovations of the early twentieth shot up, the more its weak foundations crumbled, and the arts
left the structure completely.
2. Was early twentieth century musicresponsive to public opinion? Was emotional expression to an
audience important to early twentieth century composers? Explain.
As art continued to drift away from reality in the twentieth century, it inevitably become detached
from the ordinary public. Disregarding the conventional expectations of their audience, composers
became increasingly experimental. Although to some this was a breath of fresh air from the heavy
sentimentality of composers such as Tchaikovsky, many were driven away by the harsh separation
of music from feeling. Compared to the romantic sounds from the era of the same name, Modernist
music seemed cold and emotionless. One of the most influential composers of the time, Igor
Stravinsky, was an outspoken advocate for this detachment, or objectivity , as it was called, of
sentiment from music, and rejection of Romantic emotionality. Objectivity was the ideal, and this
more mathematical approach to music led to some interesting new sounds. Some

Socrates Self Confidence
Socrates was a philosopher in c. 470 BCE c. 399 BCE. He was a pioneer in an education method,

The Pilgrim s Progress By John Bunyan
The Pilgrim s Progress written by John Bunyan was a very deep and touching story to me. After
reading it and trying to interpret what it was saying I decided that I could actually relate more to
this story than I realized through my faith as a follower of Jesus Christ. John Bunyan uses a
dream of the main character, Christian, to describe a life changing event for Christian to grow
spiritually while traveling and meeting new people and having first time experiences. The Pilgrims
Progress is an allegory to the Bibleand Christianitythat portrays what we as Christians believe in.
Bunyan uses the pilgrimage of Christian to express this allegory using the experiences and
people Christian comes into contact with to explore the struggles and challenges of life on
earth Christians faces daily when seeking eternal life. The first challenge Christian faces is his
guilt. As a Christian, I was always taught right from wrong according to the Bible and when I am
in the wrong for something, I feel guilty because I know it is wrong and that it is not necessarily
how God wants me to live my life or what he wants from me. The guilt arises because I am
promised eternal greatness after my life here on earth as long as I believe in JesusChrist and I
continue to strive to be a Christian, and well lets face it, who would not feel guilty being
promised such an amazing thing in exchange for being a good person and following the biblical
scripture of Christ. I dreamed, and behold, I saw a man

  • 2. Stephen King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies” Essay examples It was the summer of 1983; I was reading my first Horror novel by Jay Anson The Amityville Horror , it was the scariest thing I had ever picked up. Despite the late hours I continued to read into the early morning hours until my eyes burned for relief. Whenever I got up to use the rest room I would stand on the end of my bed lean over and open the door and jump so not to be grabbed by monsters that might be laying in wait under my bed. This started a long love affair for horror stories. For instance Stephen King is known as the master of horror; I have read all his older novels. Watched a few of his movies and discovered the movies are B rated compared to the books. His newer work is a little more farfetched for me more like Sci Fi, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, if I catch the movie before the book comes out I am able to enjoy it more, after watching movie first; I like to read the book to compare the two. Last year when the book, Shutter Island reached the book stores I purchased it immediately. While I was in the middle of reading it the audio book was released, so I decided to download it to my MP3 player. I located my place in the book and picked up there on my MP3 player so while following along in my book I listened to the audio. To my surprise the two were very different, not much that you would say they wrote two different books. Although enough you could tell the reader was not reading from the same book you were. As I followed along listening, the reader was adding parts that were not in my book, now these pieces could have been in the original books manuscript from which he might be reading, but it helped to give further insight into the story. Having really enjoyed reading this piece, however watching the movie after reading the book anyone could pick out at least fifteen things that were in the book that was left out of the movie. I personally believe this is what made the movie a major failure at the box office. Now you can understand my reasoning for not watching the movies and why I d rather read the ... • 3. Analysis Of The Poem Katherine Mansfield Introduction: Katherine Mansfield was a well acclaimed author born in 1888. Her literature was in the form of short stories spanning no more than several passages long. Many dub her as an innovator in literature for her distinctive use of realism and symbolism which at the time was foreign to short stories and writing in general. Most authors at the time fabricated fictional worlds with fantastic characters in their stories but Mansfield was more interested in writing and emerging her audience into stories about realistic people in everyday environments facing internal struggle, which gained her much attention. Many of her pieces are also autobiographical as they subtly reference many moments and mixed emotions that Katherine had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ms Sheridan and her family are almost unconsciously obsessed by all things pristine and beautiful, which is where Laura stands outs. She begins to see a new type of world that she was originally timid of as she was permitted to stay away from people of less fortune. But after she encounters the workmen preparing the marquee and witnesses there unexpected unintimidating kindness she instantly turns a new leaf. Appearance also plays a big part in society, if you are not well received at first glance or dress in a specific way, you will most likely be stereotyped before you even introduce yourself. Its an arrogant act that is still very present today. A prime example of this is where Laura complains to her sister Jose about canceling the party due to the very recent death of a local working man. Joses response, You won t bring a drunken worker back to life by being sentimental and Laura then furiously replys with Drunk!, who said he was drunk! .Laura is very empathetic were as Jose is arrogant and blinded by the fantasy .Laura is constantly battling between her open minded mentality and materialistic upbringing ... • 4. Food Webs During Mass Extinction Charles Marshall s article How Stable Are Food Webs During Mass Extinctions? reflects on the current human driven mass extinction occurring today (Marshall). Researchers are wondering what will happen to the food web after the mass extinction humans are creating occurs and finishes. To find out the effects that may occur, Marshall brings up the subject of prehistoric food webs and the changes brought upon them from mass extinctions. Using prehistoric fossil records and devising these animals into guilds, either carnivores or herbivores, they made a food web for these extinct creatures. Roopnarine and Angielczyk are examples of the people who work on creating these food webs that Marshall uses in his article. These two people focus on the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Dangers Of Sex Education Surprisingly, only 24 states offer mandatory sex education in America. Most people who are opposed to sex education say that they think their teenagers are too young and innocent to understand sex education. However the website, ReCAPP.org reported in 2014 that 47% of 12th grade high school students reported having sex of which thirteen to nineteen percent of U.S. teens starting having sex at age 15. Teenagers obviously are having sex, and may not be forced to abstain from sex. So mandatory sex educationmakes sense to teach as many teenagers as possible about how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies, rape, and other dangers associated with underage sex, especially STDs (sexually transmitted diseaseincluding HIV/AIDSand Herpes Virus). Therefore, sex education should become mandatory for all 14 year old freshmen in high schools, in order to guarantee these teenagers are not too young to understand about the dangers of sex before many of them start having sex by age 15. One reason that sex education should become mandatory in all high schools, is because many teens may otherwise live in denial or be illiterate about sex due to lack of parental teaching, thereby being ignorant about how to avoid the dangers of sex. Parents, above all should not live in denial about their teens having sex. Yet, too many parents admit they simply avoid the topic, or fail to properly teach their children about the dangers of sex. For example, college friends admit that they hide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Thief Film Themes However, this rejection that these characters have also seems to be a symbol of male anxiety. The characters always seem to be dispatched by their male equivalents. Looking at Heat again, when Neil Mc Cauley is dying, he reaches out gesturing to hold Vincent s hand, squeezing it tightly. This scene cries out as a testimony to Michael Mann s recurring interest in the relationship between the professional opposites which almost always seems to result in a metaphysical displacement that is strangely elevating. In Thief (1981) which was Mann s feature film debut, laid out a thematic blueprint that his later work would follow. Frank s character played by James Caan strives to create a family with Jessie his girlfriend. He carries around with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The double is the battle between the protagonist and the antagonist in Mann s film. The double always seems to be men with opposite professions. But still professions that take place or follow those that are in the urban night. In Collateral Vincent (Tom Cruise) is a hitman whilst Max (Jamie Foxx) is a taxi driver. In Heat Neil Mc Cauley is a criminal whilst Vincent (Al Pacino) is a cop. The expressionistic use of urban architecture in Mann s films (concreate, glass, steel) highlights the estrangement that postmodernism creates between people. This mirror image theme is most visible in the Manhunter . Will Graham (William Petersen), chases after the notorious tooth fairy serial killer because he is able to place himself in the same mind set as the killer in order to catch him. His psychological instincts and suppressed self, contain an inner self that is unnatural and vexatious. This theme of mirror images is also present in Collateral . When Max is forced to confront his boss about being exploited about, we see the contempt that Vincent has for authority and power in general. Max wants to get rid of Vincent because he is a constant reminder of his failure to take appropriate action in his life. Max is totally at the mercy of the social forces and unable to negotiate which unlike Vincent who is a hitman has a detachment from this empowerment that he has constructed through identifying his male ... • 7. Explain Why Gay And Lesbian Parents Should Have A Home Do you think that every child in an orphanage or the foster system should have a home? Is it fair to deprive kids of a home because their parents would be gay or lesbian? How will Children who are raised by gay or lesbian parents be effected when they are older? These are a few important questions concerning same sex couples who are looking to adopt. Answering the first question, yes I think every child deserves to have a home, and I think that most people would agree. The answer to the second question, Is it fair to deprive kids of a home because their parents would be gay or lesbian? is no it is not fair at all, and the answer to the last question is we cannot be sure because every child is different, and so are every pair of parents. I am pro for same sex couples to be allowed to adopt because, it is unfair, and it discriminates... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rate of straight couples getting a divorce is at two percent, but the rate for lesbian couples is 1.6 percent and the rate for gay couples is even lower at 1.1 percent. This is good because that means that a child who is adopted by a gay or lesbian couple is probably going to have a more emotionally secure home, and their parents will probably stay together. Another reason that Gay and Lesbian couples should be allowed to adopt is because there aren t many people willing to adopt children, so any good people no matter what their sexuality is should be allowed to adopt. These children could go into the foster system, but adopting is much better, and it can be safer. Same sex couples have to plan to want children, instead of accidentally having them. This means that because they cannot naturally have their own children with their spouse, so they have to find a donor, surrogate or they have to adopt. This also means that the child will also know that they were always wanted and were never a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Essay on The Adaptive Parasite The Adaptive Parasite Viruses are molecular sharks, a motive without a mind. They have sorted themselves into tribes, and they infect everything that lives. . . . Unknown viruses are coming out of the equatorial wildernesses of the earth and discovering the human race. . . . You might call AIDS the revenge of the rainforest. (Preston 160 61) After reading Richard Preston s ominous and threatening portrayal of viruses in his article Crisis In The Hot Zone, one may be alarmed enough to invest in surgical scrubs and a space suit to wear as a permanent precaution against these evidently vengeful creatures. In truth, there are lethal viruses that exist for which there is currently no vaccine or cure, and there are various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The process of evolution results when organisms reproduce more individuals than the environment can support, genetic variation naturally and inevitably occurs, the organisms that are the most successful within their habitat survive, and those that are deficient and weak are eliminated. The survivors of this ecological pressure are able to flourish, reproduce, and pass their favorable genes onto subsequent generations. Many biologists believe that viruses evolved after the appearance of the first cells and favor the hypothesis that they originated from fragments of cellular nucleic acids, [DNA or RNA], that could move from one cell to another within an organism (Campbell, Mitchell, and Reece 330). This theory asserts that a portion of DNA or RNA initially became separated from the remainder of the cell s genome, and the newly formed virus then migrated into another cell. Isolated fragments of DNA or RNA would be biologically inert; therefore, viruses have been engineered by the forces of evolution to maximize their survival as mobile, parasitic organisms (Preston 159). Viruses, as mere segments of nucleic acids, have developed various adaptations that ensure their reproduction, their transport from cell to cell, and their survival at the expense of another organism. Viruses have adapted a dependency on the cells of another organism, termed a host, to provide both shelter and a metabolic means of reproduction. Different viruses have evolved ... • 9. A Historical Context Of Reinforcement Part A: Historical Context of Reinforcement In the behavioral science the term, reinforcement signifies strengthening a behavior. Many learning theories consist of some form of strengthening or weakening a behavior, in which withholding or presenting reinforcement may decrease or increase the future occurrence of a behavior (Skinner, 1953). The application of reinforcement varies between theorists and the type of learning implied. Ivan Pavlov (1928) demonstrated the use of reinforcement was connected between the pairings of an unconditioned stimulus (UCS) and a conditioned stimulus (CS). Pavlov s experiments consisted of presenting meat powder, an unconditioned stimulus to a dog and as a result the dog produced salivation. A bell tone,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His subjects were placed in a puzzle box and Thorndike timed how long it took for the cats to escape. Throughout the experiment, the cats found a lever that opened the cage door. After their escape, Thorndike placed the cats back into the cage and after repeated trials the cats learned that pressing the lever would result in a satisfying consequence. The cats behaviors of opening the lever were reinforced by the favorable consequence of escape. His work led to the development of instrumental conditioning, which focuses learning from the consequences of responses. Ten years after his first study, the notion of response reinforcement was introduced through the Law of Effect , which stated, responses made to the same situation, those which are accompanied or closely followed by satisfaction to the animal will, other things being equal, be more firmly connected with the situation, so that, when it recurs, they will be more likely to recur (Thorndike, 1911, p. 250). Essentially, a response that is followed by a favorable consequence is likely repeat and a response that is followed by an aversive consequence will not reoccur. B.F. Skinner modified Thorndike s law of effect principle into what Skinner (1938) called the term, operant conditioning, in which through the application of reinforcement, a behavior changes for a more desire response. Skinner (1948) observed operant conditioning through his experiment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. ADI Egg Lab Report ADI Egg Lab Ritika Sharma Section 1: During the egg lab there was one guiding question we were trying to figure out. Which was what effect do different solutions (maple syrup, mouth wash, and saltwater) have on cell size? Before we started this lab we had to have our background information which was osmosis is when water moves from a high concentration to a low concentration through a membrane. We also had to know that hypotonic is when water is moving into the cell and the cell swells/expands. Hypertonic is when water is moving out of the cell and the cell is shrinking. Isotonic is when an equal amount of water is moving in and out of the cell at the same rate. The goal of the experiment was to figure out what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The guiding question relates to our background info because in order to know the effect the different solution had on the cell size we had to know our terminology, which was included in the background information. Section2: For this lab we had to follow certain procedures. We had to first gather 3 eggs and 3 cups. Put one egg in each cup then we had to get the 3 solutions that were being used for the experiment, which was mouthwash, syrup, and salt water. We labeled the cups for which solution went which what egg and then we had to measure each egg before putting it in the substance for 24 hours. To measure we got a string and wrapped it around each egg to get its circumference then we took that measurement(the circumference of the string) and converted the string to a ruler to find out the circumference. We did that for all three eggs and recorded that data down. Then we put the eggs into their cup marked with their solution and waited 24 hours to record the data again. We then got another egg for our control and measured it the same way as the other eggs and put in water for 24 hours. The reason we used this set of procedures is so our experiment would be very accurate, and easy to do so we would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No Country For Old Men Analysis Cormac McCarthy s thriller, No Country for Old Men, is a story exploding with violence, drug deals, greed, murder, and the ongoing battle between good and evil in the world today. Driven by the pessimistic belief that little can be done to right the wrongs in the world, Sheriff Ed Tom Bell continually compares the world today to the world he grew up in one where good always triumphed evil. It is clear that Sheriff Bell believes that evil is a side of human nature that little can be done about to fix. • 13. President Bush s Response to September 11 and Islamic... On September 11, 2001, the United States witnessed its worst attack on U.S. soil since the bombings of Pearl Harbor in 1945. Members of the terrorist group Al Qaeda hijacked four aircraft and managed to crash two of them in to the Twin Towers in New York City. When the smoke cleared, there were 2,752 deaths. This day marked the beginning of a new type of war for the United States: the war on terror. These events left President George Bush with a complex and troublesome series of decisions to make. Before diving into the changes, it is necessary to understand why Osama bin Laden orchestrated such an elaborate attack on the United States. Osama bin Laden, although once an American ally, turned enemy against the United States for several reasons. First and foremost, Bin Laden condemns American support for Israel and the billions it received in aid. Moreover, the United States being a foreign democratic power has no right to enter the House of Islam as it did during the Persian Gulf War in 1991 with a military presence in Egypt. Politically and socially, the United States is the diametric opposite of bin Laden s beliefs and goals. It is bin Laden s goal to remove the United States out of the Middle East by crippling it domestically. However, President Bush is in no position to acquiesce his wishes. Terrorism has no role in the modern world and on September 20, 2001, President Bush made his intentions clear when he stated, We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is no refuge or no rest...Either you are with us or you are against us with the terrorists. • 14. Faulkner Writing Style If the purpose of your story is to unfold the secrets at the center of your hero s life, then there is no reason the key events or revelations need to be presented in the calendar order in which they occurred. What is more important is that there is a march toward understanding, a sense we are drawing ever closer to the truth wherever it may lie (Blake, 2). This statement sounds like something I believe Faulkner would say. Faulkner s imagination was very great and this made him a great writer. Faulkner even went to the extent of creating his own town in Yoknapatawpha Mississippi (Meyer, 77). William Faulknerwas a great author that has amazed people throughout the years. A statement he mentioned when he accepted his Nobel Prize really stuck to me. Problems of the human heart in conflict with itself...alone can make good writingbecause only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat (Faulkner, 77). Faulkner s writing style differs from other authors because it is written in non chronological order, which opens the door to exciting mysteries and excitement throughout the story unlike the film versions of stories such as A Rose for Emily, which is predictable due to the sequence of event. Due to this, many individuals that read books tend to like them more than the actual film that is developed. Middle school was when I realized how fascinated I am by animals, their behavior, and their welfare. I began to notice the overpopulation issue of strays and the overfill in local shelters. It opened my eyes to what seemed like a different aspect of the world. There are so many social issues that people are focused on, and some people have started to ignore other living creatures. This has struck me. As I ve been getting older, I feel, more and more, like I can make a difference, at least in my community. Raif English Comparison Essay Red Jacket and Olaudah Equiano have different opinions on the people of the United States of America because they had different roles and were in different situations, they were in different locations, and they experienced different types of treatment and behavior. Olaudah Equiano was a captured African from Benin; his home in Western South Africa. He worked as a slave in Barbados and Virginia but surprisingly bought his freedom and headed to England to support the British anti slavery movement. The estrogen in suburban wastewater disrupts frogs reproductive systems, causing them to spawn far more female frogs than male frogs, and in effect threatening the entire species and ecosystem. The study was done by Yale University and compared the proportions of frog sexes between 21 suburban ponds and isolated ponds in southwestern Connecticut. Its findings were published in the latest issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. End of an Era for Male Frogs In the wild, the study found, male frogs outnumber female frogs, accounting for almost 60 percent of the frog population. But it has everything to do with clovers. Clovers? Yes, clovers are just one of several common lawn plants that naturally produce phytoestrogens. When plants like clovers occur in unnatural concentrations as they do in the grassy suburbs, phytoestrogen levels in water become high enough to alter the biology of water bound animals. Amphibians are especially susceptible. While the study focused on green frogs as a common North American amphibian species, the same results are predicted for toads, newts, and salamanders. Further studies will investigate whether these phytoestrogens are even affecting the reproduction of birds and mammals. Burn the Clovers! Burn Them All! Well, it s not that simple. First introduced in 1912 by Charles Friedel and James M. Crafts, this reaction allows large multi step reactions to take place, and creates numerous types of products.1 Today, Friedel Crafts reactions are among the most used electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. In the electrophilic aromatic substitution class of reactions, functional groupsare substituted onto an aromatic ring.2 Products such as ketones, hydrocarbons and phenols, phenol ethers, and keto acids can be produced by electrophilic aromatic substitution.1 These products can then undergo other reactions, allowing for the creation of many types of products. The products acquired can be used for a range of purposes, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, etcetera.3 In particular, Friedel Crafts acylation reactions result in a product containing a ketone.... To obtain the ketone product, an acyl group is added to an aromatic ring. I honestly expected it to be a happy ending, but it surprised me when it wasn t. The story also interested me because all of this was based loosely on true events that were reported in New York papers in 1983. I think that its greatest weakness was its break in its message. While Ouisa and Flan tell their story about Paul, they constantly turn to the audience and break the fourth wall. While doing that sometimes can be beneficial, they do it practically every other line. I got confused when they kept switching, always having to go back and reread to see who they were talking to. Another way that they broke the message was interrupting each other. It seems that middle class children tend to do better than working class children. Most sociologists believe that in every social class there is the same range of ability, this means that class differences in educational attainment are not due to class differences in intelligence, but due to other circumstances such as the home and socialization. However some sociologists would argue that attainment in classes results from sifting, sorting and assessment of pupils in terms of teacher s perceptions of class, ability and conduct. Throughout this essay, the view that working class underachievers in schoolis... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This theory states that those at the bottom of the class system are deprived of important values, attitudes, experiences and skills which are essential for educational success. Their home life lacks the kind of stimulation needed for high attainment, for example, the absence of books and educational toys. Basil Bernstein identified two forms of speech pattern, the restricted code and the elaborate code. The restricted code is a kind of shorthand speech. In comparison, in the elaborated code, meanings are made explicit, explanations are provided and details are spelt out. According to Bernstein, most middle class children have been socialised in both the restricted and elaborated codes whereas many working class children are limited to the restricted code. As teachers use the elaborated code, working class children have an immediate disadvantage and may be criticised for misunderstanding. Working class children learn this language code at home, therefore being another reason for underachievement in school being related to home circumstances. Further more, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu starts from the idea that there is a dominant culture in society. Children born into the middle class have a built in advantage. Their culture is closer to the culture of the school so they will be more likely to succeed, their language is closer to that of the teachers so they will be more likely to ... • 46. Summary Of For That He Look Not Upon Her By George Gascoigne The poem, For That He Looked Not upon Her by George Gascoigne exemplifies how the speaker suffered from love, something that many people believe one should feel positive about. The title delivers a despairing tone by allowing the audience to believe that the speaker can no longer look the woman he loved in the eye. Conflicting with the despairing tone, the speaker develops a complex attitude with the use of structure, metaphors, diction, and desire. The structure and tone of the poem enhance the conflict and hopelessness the speaker is feeling towards the woman he loves and desires. For the first twelve lines of the poem there is an abab rhyming pattern. This ties into the despairing and desirable tone and how the rhyming scheme can be an example of the speaker constantly going back and forth between emotions for this women. For example, And that mine eyes take no delight to range About the gleams which on your face do grow. (Gascoigne 3 4) are two phrases that contradict the speakers feelings. Stating that his eyes take no delight in range can refer to the speaker finding no use or happiness in looking at the woman. Although, he then mentions the gleams upon her face growing, giving the audience the idea that even though the speakers lovefor the woman causes him deep despair, he still desires her enough to describe her features in attentive detail; in this example the gleams on her face. What effect did these events have on music, literature, and the arts? Despite the incredible advancements from the scientific world in the late nineteenth century, the rapidly developing industry had its dark side. Telephones, automobiles, and airplanes were in their early stages of development, and were all crashing into people s worlds at an a dangerously fast pace. Contrary to the welcomed progress of such periods as the Enlightenment, the overwhelming influx of new ideas was too much, and, as shown many times throughout history, the arts followed the thoughts of the time. Although this time, it was not the celebration of progress, but a look into the pessimistic side of it. Modernism. Feeling as though they could no longer put their faith in anything, artists turned away from science, religion, and the reliability of the human mind. Painters abandoned reality, writers shunned traditional structure, and musicians ignored logic. The faster the innovations of the early twentieth shot up, the more its weak foundations crumbled, and the arts left the structure completely. 2.
