Allegorizations of the Active and Contemplative Lives in...
Allegorizations of the Active and Contemplative Lives in Philo, Origen, Augustine, and Gregory
This paper examines the allegorical interpretations given to several Scriptural pairs as they relate to
the idea of the active and contemplative lives in Philo, Origen, Augustine, and Gregory. As will be
shown, Augustine combines elements found in the two previous writers to form his allegory of the two
wives of Jacob as representative of the active and contemplative lives.
In Philo, most of the essential elements of later Christian thought on the active and contemplative lives
are already present. The superiority of the contemplative life is given at the beginning of his treatise
on it: I have discussed the Essenes, who persistently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the former is mortal, the latter immortal, and indeed all the things that are precious to the senses
are inferior in perfection to beauty of soul, though they are many and it but one (Sob. 12). Elsewhere
Leah is effortless, perfected virtue, while Rachel is active, combative virtue fighting against the
temptations of the sensory world:
Thus one of the lawful wives is a movement, sound, healthy, and peaceful, and to express her history
Moses names her Leah or smooth . The other is like a whetstone. Her name is Rachel, and on that
whetstone the mind which loves effort and exercise sharpens its edge. Her name means vision of
profanation , not because her way of seeing is profane, but on the contrary, because she judges the
visible world of sense to be not holy but profane, compared with the pure and undefiled nature of the
invisible world of the mind. (Congr. 25)
Later in the same passage, Philo identifies Leah with the reasoning and Rachel with the unreasoning
faculties of the soul: For since our soul is twofold, with one part reasoning and the other unreasoning,
each has its own virtue or excellence, the reasoning Leah, the unreasoning Rachel. The virtue we call
Rachel, acting through the senses and the other parts of our unreasoning nature, trains us to despise all
that should be held of little account (Congr. 26 27).
Since Philo consistently takes Leah as representing the superior or perfected virtue that should

Peer Pressure In Shooting An Elephant By George Orwell
Most people believe that others have authority and control over their own actions. However, contrary
to belief, authority controls people s actions. Peer pressure can have an effect on the decisions people
make. In this short story, the policeman (the protagonist) is hated by the majority of people in the city
of Moulmein. He is hated because he is secretly on the Burmese people s side instead of the British.
Along with conflict of the British and Burmese people, an elephant escapes and causes chaos
throughout the city. It is killing people and destroying buildings. The policeman decides to step in and
help, but he is faced with the peer pressure of the crowd to kill an elephant that he has no intention in
killing. The protagonist is faced with lying to other people and regret for his actions. In, Shooting an
Elephant George Orwell explains how the policeman struggles between the decisions of shooting an
elephant to please the authoritarian crowd that can treat him better and accept him.
When the policeman decides to help the people of Moulmein, in lower Burma, he lets them believe his
gun is going to be used to shoot the elephant, because of the presser the crowd puts on him. The
protagonist struggles throughout life due to the fact that most people despise him. The text states that,
I was hated by large numbers of people the only time in my life that I have been important enough for
this to happen to me, (17). The people have the authority over the hatred that is directed towards the
protagonist. They control if he is accepted or outcasted. The policeman was looking for a way not to
be hated, so he decides to help with chaos that the elephant has created. He grabs his gun and then is
confronted with a crowd that normally would have no interest in him. For example, They had seen the
rifle and were all shouting excitedly that I was going to shoot the elephant, (19). The magical rifle in
his hands makes him seem worth paying attention to. This is because the policeman can shoot the
elephant and give the people what they want. The protagonist was not intending to shoot the elephant
so, he did not tell the crowd that he was going to use the rifle for protection. This may be because, he
was looking for a

Workaholic Deviance Examples
A perfect comedy show that I chose is called Workaholics, it s based off three main characters named
Blake Anderson, Adam DeVine, and Anders Holm. The characters met in college and after dropping
out they decided to move in together and continued to act as if they are still in college, such as doing
pranks, binge drinking and throwing parties at their house. From a functionalist perspective, their
harmonious relationship that share the same norms would be an example of social cohesion.
Additionally, they work in a small cubicle office at a telemarketing place, but with their disruptive
behavior they cause a lot of trouble with their coworkers and boss. The TV show demonstrates the

Opportunities For Sustainable Building Practices...
Opportunities in renewable energy in tourism Our initial assessment for The Birchwood Hotel down
town St. Petersburg focused on examining key areas for sustainable building practices consistent with
Green Key guidelines. The areas assessed were corporate environmental management, housekeeping,
conference and meeting spaces, food and beverage, engineering and maintenance. Summing up the
condition of each system served as a target for the property owners to make improvements for their
short and long term needs that will align the property s mission and goals to be more in line with
Energy Conservation and Sustainable Business practices. The refurbished property has been able to
achieve its own décor and exclusive identity, but after the assessment was graded, it was only able to
earn one Green Key certification.

situation to achieve the required economies of scale; and in these present hostile economic and

The Role Of The Axis Of Resistance In Iran
Iranian Shi a militants, the Assad regime in Syria, the Sunni Hamas, and the Lebanese Hezbollah have
all joined together to fight against western influence, such as that of the US, and Israel, in their
regions. Former President George W. Bush called them The Axis of Evil . This name was used around
the United States and around the world for some time. In 2010, however, they became known as the
Axis of Resistance after a Libyan news journalist used this to refer to them in his news article (CBS
News). In this group Iran has always been a major supplier of finances, training and equipment to all

What Is Erikson s Theory Of Spiritual Formation
SPIRITUAL FORMATION THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN
BY SOMMER BARNES
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY ONLINE
Abstract
In this research paper, I will try to illustrate my hypothesis of spiritual formation throughout the
lifespan by using my interpretation of a collection of theories. The theories I will refer to include
Piaget s Cognitive Development Theory, Erikson s Psychosocial Theory, and Kohlberg s Development
of Moral Reasoning Theory. In Piaget s Theory of Cognitive Development, he develops a theory of
cognitive development that occurs in stages from persons under two years of age through age 14.
Piaget s theory relates to the cognitive development of a human person. In Erik Erickson s Theory of
Psychosocial Development, Erikson describes a theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* * Erik Erickson s theory uses distinct critical crises that occur in one s life that require an ah hah
moment which leads to maturity. It is with this model I will now illustrate another perspective on
spiritual formation through the life cycle. Erikson puts a clear emphasis on society s role in the
development of n individual. Erikson advises that crises are never completely resolved and can re
emerge later in life, if left unresolve. I think that throughout ones spiritual journey we all have
different things that we question, learn, discover and each of these changes in thinking all come from a
moment that you decided that is your belief spiritually. Modeling Erikson s stages of psychosocial
development, the first stage is basic trust vs. mistrust. A spiritual leader, a church family, a version of
your bible; these things are all things that you rely on to get to know your higher power. These things
should align in most basic beliefs but when they contradict one another, a seeker of truth must ask
himself What do I believe? In the next stage of development, autonomy vs. shame are a crisis that
occur when the thinking becomes strong and confident when the spiritual journey is welcoming, joyful
and environmentally sound. In cases * If a believer is surrounded with unstable fellowship, lost in the
crowd churches and too many questions within, the seeker can

LEADERSHIP The leadership the Patriots had was a very big factor of their win in the Revolutionary

Similarities Between Gilgamesh And Genesis
There is a lot of evidence to prove and explain how the Israelite people might have known or heard
some Babylonian myths. This evidence is shown through similarities in the Genesis creation myths
and many Babylonian myths. As an example, there are many similarities shown throughout the
Gilgamesh story that relates to the Noah story in Genesis. Some similarities include the heroes
character, the order to build a boat, the number of animals, the means of the flood, and the action of
sacrificing after the flood. These are only a few of the many similarities interpreted in these stories.
The first similarity is that the character of the heroes in both the Gilgamesh story as well as the
Genesis/Noah story. In both stories, the heroes character is righteous. For example, in Noah s Arc, it
states that a righteous man (Genesis 6:9) was directed to build an ark to save a limited and select
group of people and all species of animals. Noah received these orders directly from God. On the
other hand, Utnapishtim received his order from a dream. The next similarity is the order to build a
boat. In the Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim is clearly instructed to build a boat and leave all wealth behind. O
man of Shuruppak, son of Ubartutu: Tear down the house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek
living beings! (Gilgamesh 23 25). In comparison at the beginning of the Noah flood story, Noah is
also instructed to build a boat or an arc for the flood. So make yourself an ark of cypress

Paris Opera Ballet Research Paper
A Brief History of the Paris Opera Ballet
It is during the 16th century that the French started ascertaining themselves using the art of ballet. The
early ballet dancing was mainly done by dignified dancers who used to entertain the royalty in the
main hall where other spectators would watch through the sides of the galleries. The ballet dancing
was majorly designed for the entertainment of the aristocracy and the high and rich people in Paris. In
the year 1661 Louis XIV founded the Academie Royale de Danse which is presently known as the
Paris Opera Ballet (Fisher, 2003, p. 146). In the early times of ballet dancing all the dancers were men,
and women roles were played by men wearing masks. It was during the year 1681 that the first female

Poetry Of Sappho And Catullus
The Ancient poetry of Sappho and Catullus has drawn many comparisons since their origins. In
particular, Catullus s poem 51 is a direct adaptation of Sappho s 31. This symmetricality of the two
poems allows for perfect comparison to highlight the ways in which the styles of the poets differ or
resemble the other. While both Sappho and Catullus write of love, uncontrollable desire, and the
overwhelming affect it has on them, Catullus brings a certain ego and self centeredness to his poem, in
turn changing the entire mood of the poem.
In both 31 and 51, the poets describe the overwhelming sensation of love and lust for a lover. Both
Sappho and Catullus manage to capture their affection and desire for their love, as well as the toll that
this lust takes on their psyche but in doing so shed very different light on the process. Sappho s poem s
depth and faith in love create a positive tone to the poem, while Catullus s ego and fear tinge his poem
with sadness and negativity. Sappho is able to portray this overpowering response as something
thrilling and exciting. She takes the nervous energy associated with attraction and with the love of
another, and shows that it is worthwhile. The positivity that she is able to weave through her poem
while at the same time portraying the nervousness at the beginning of attraction paints a realistic
picture of love. In the finale line of her poem, Sappho states, all is to be dared, illustrating how the
love of another, for Sappho, is

The Influence Of Family Sitcoms In The 1970 s
The family sitcom has always been a form of entertainment that has brought people together, and has
played a pivotal role in American society. Family values often change over time to reflect the issues
being faced by each family member generationally. Media and entertainment are often affected by the
social and political issues of their time. Many of these issues, and the way that these issues have
shaped American values, have often influenced the content of television sitcoms. Although family
sitcoms often reflect the values of real American families, in the 1970s, many television families had
very few flaws, as opposed to the real families of the 1970s. Meanwhile, television families more
accurately represented real families in the 1980s. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before the seventies, family values were more conservative and traditional with the popularization of
the nuclear family in the fifties and sixties. The nuclear family was ...built around the nucleus of the
mother and father... (Stanley, 2012). This changed in the 1970s due to the economic and social
struggle inflicted by the Cold War and Vietnam (Stanley, 2012). Family size began to go down
because people could not afford big families anymore. This trend continued into the eighties when,
...the average family size dropped from 3.58 people in 1970 to 3.29 people in 1980... (Suro, 1991).
Because of financial struggle, family size was less of a priority for the average family. Another change
in the 1980s was that marriage was not valued as much as it was in previous years. When a group of
high school seniors were surveyed, there was ...a modest (4% 5%) decline in the late 1980s in the
fraction of female seniors saying that they thought it very likely that they would stay married for a
lifetime to the same person... (Thornton Young Demarco, 2001). Because of the lack of optimism in
the 1970s, young women were not as enthusiastic about marriage as previous generations. Because of
social, political, and economic struggles and advancements, family values changed between these two

My Service Learning Hours At Asarese Matters Community Center
This spring semester I had the privilege of completing my service learning hours at Asarese Matters
Community Center. I chose to conduct my hours of service at this site because I felt like I could relate
to the kids that are experiencing a life of poverty with limited mobility opportunities. Most my time
spent there I interacted with a majority of the kids through basketball and competitive activities like
billiards, ping pong and talking sports. While observing relationships and interactions between staff
and youth that attend the community center I noticed the important role that sport and education
played in the life of the children. Using my sociological imagination, I would like to explore the role
of sport and the interactions and behaviors that takes place during competitive situations, also the role
of education and the kids perception on going to college and using sport and education as a way of
succeeding and escaping the concentrated poverty of the Buffalo communities. Using the lived
experience that I encountered and knowledge acquired in the past, I will try to piece together a
connection and express how the macro level expectations of a community to prosper influences the
self esteem, behaviors and attitudes among social groups at the micro level here in the city of Buffalo
and at Asarese Matters community center. Winning and Losing A majority of the kids families that

Cuneiform History
Cuneiform was an early form of wedge shaped writing developed by ancient Sumerians around the
late 4th millennium B.C. Named after the Latin word cuneus or wedge shaped , cuneiform was
recorded on clay tablets with pointed reed sticks. Archaeologists have located many of these tablets at
various archaeological sites in modern day Iraq. Only highly educated Sumerian scribes could actually
read and write cuneiform, creating social disparities between the educated rich and the laboring poor.
Other early forms of writing, such as Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Persian languages, were
based on the principles of cuneiform. This early language provided the roots for other written
languages all around the world (Nardo 81 84).
Ziggurats were tall pyramid shaped buildings that served as templates for local Mesopotamian gods.
With first versions built in Sumer in the later 4th millennium B.C. they evolved from a simple large
platform to intricately designed, multi story buildings. Ancient Mesopotamians saw the ziggurats as
the connection between humanity and their local god. Located in the center of Mesopotamian cities,
they symbolized the power of the gods and the priests who communicated with the gods ( Ziggurats

Romeo And Juliet Free Will Quotes Analysis
Rosa Parks overcame adversity in society to become an activist in the civil rights movement. In the
famous play Romeo Juliet, by Shakespeare, two teenagers from rival houses, Capulet and Montague,
meet at a masquerade, fall in love, get married, and meet a tragic end. The theme of Romeo Juliet is
free will is fundamentally more in control of determining our destiny than fate is.
In Act I, Scene iv, Romeo was complaining to Mercutio about how [Romeo] dreamt a dream tonight
and it gave him a bad feeling about going to the Capulet s masquerade (I, iv, 50). Mercutio replied
with True, I talk of dreams; which are the children of idle brains (I, iv, 98). Mercutio is telling Romeo
to do something rather than be depressed about Rosaline rejecting him. Mercutio is telling Romeo to
find someone new and forget about Rosaline. Romeo should go to the party and find someone to help
him forget about Rosaline.
In Act II, Scene iii. Friar John told Romeo and Juliet in one respect I ll thy assistant be; for this
alliance May so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love (II, ii, 90). Friar John hastily

The Dynamic Character In Carver s Cathedral By Raymond Carver
In the short story Cathedral by Raymond Carver, the narrator is a dynamic character because of the
way his thoughts adjust throughout the entirety of the story. The beginning of the story shows the
narrator only being able to see physical things with his eyes. By the end, the narrator sees a different
perspective through his imagination. Robert, the blind man that visits the narrator and his wife, brings
out the imagination from within the narrator. The narrator is a dynamic character because he changes
his judgment of Robert from a more prejudice view to a more acceptable one. The beginning of the
story presents the narrator s wife working for a blind man one summer by reading, stuff to him, case
studies, reports, that sort of thing (Carver, 34). She eventually extends an invitation for the blind man,
Robert, to stay at their house after Robert s wife had passed away. The narrator was not too happy
about having a stranger stay in his home by stating, I wasn t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no
one I knew. And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the
movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed (Carver, 34). The narrator seems very timid about
someone he had never met stay at his house who can see purely nothing. This gives off an impression
that the narrator doesn t want to have Robert stay with him because he will be a hassle to keep up with
since blind people in the movies progress, slowly and never

track to stop the oncoming trolley but he will die in the process. Most people would not push the
stranger onto the track (Greene et al., 2001). Not pushing the stranger is a deontological response (do
not kill innocents), whereas pushing the stranger is a utilitarian response (greatest good for greatest
number). In Choe and Min s study (2011), it was concluded that disgust propensity had a negative
correlation to utilitarian judgment, while trait anger had correlated positively to utilitarian judgment.
They had a variety of personal moral scenarios that were randomised and given to the participants,
who were asked to choose an emotion that they felt. In order to have a better understanding

Chapel Hill Accomplishments
Truthfully, I just want whoever reads my essay to know that this is a hundred percent me. I admire the
prestigious excellence of Chapel Hill and I would be more than honored to attend. Nonetheless, if I do
not make it, my perception and respect for Chapel Hill will not change. I am compassionate about
people which is why I am pursuing a career in the medical field. That is why going to a liberal
university such as Chapel Hill would be a fitting institution to attend. Chapel Hill is a place where I
can open my mind to more diversity and opportunity. Again, I am not someone who stays in my
comfort zone; I am all for new experiences and settings.
My mind set is more open minded, uplifting, and goal oriented, which is evident by my grades. This

The Similarities Between Sal And Lex In Jurassic Park
All the characters are different, but they all have a few key similarities. Tom wanted to be independent
and noble, but Sal and Lex both wanted to understand, from Sal wanting to know about her mom the
Lex craving to know her situation and safety. This shows how there can be connections between books
that do not have the same plot, story, characters, or even timeline as others.
For example, Sal s mother passed away in a bus accident and this consequently compels her to want to
know more. This is important for the reader to know as it helps them understand what is happening as
the story develops. It also helps them understand the reason that Sal went on this road trip, to see her
mother s grave. Because of this, it helps the reader understand that Sal is not bringing her mother
home physically, but mentally will never forget this journey. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Lex grew up in a suburban home with everything she ever wanted, but now that her parents are getting
a divorce she has a need to know. She wants to know why. This is also good for readers to know
because it helps them understand the mental changes she went through in Jurassic Park. She has come
accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, not having her life torn up and being in danger from savage
dinosaurs. This shows the change keeps the readers informed on why Michael Crichton is doing what

The Model Of Organizational Therapy
There are many different conceptual models available to occupational therapists today. These include
the Canadian model of occupational performance and engagement (CMOP E), the Model of Human
Occupation (MOHO), the biomechanics model, the Kawa model and the rehabilitation model. These
are very important to the profession and in guiding the occupational therapy process. The focus of this
essay will mainly be on the MOHO. The occupational therapy process is the client centred delivery of
occupational therapy services. (AOTA, 2008) There are many variations to the occupational therapy
process and how it is carried out but it does have a clear beginning point and stages throughout the
process. These are evaluation, intervention, revaluation and therapy outcomes. Evaluation (often
called assessment) is the gathering and analysing of information whose results are used by the
occupational therapist to organise and administer interventions to to help clients in changing their
occupational performance in a positive way. Intervention is the application of actions aimed at aiding

Metal Band Misconceptions
Misconceptions about Rock and Metal Bands.
Only talks about death? Screams all the time? Lyrics mean nothing? If the first thing you thought of
was a band you believe all those common misconceptions. How would you know if you refuse to try
and listen to it? Most people choose not to go out on a limb and give this music a chance because they
have a paranoia that it is evil. Kids who wear black and listen to rock music aren t all satan
worshippers or terrible people. ~Andy Biersack. There is no reason that this music shouldn t be
respected by society.
Where did the misconception that rock and metal bands have meaningless lyrics come from? In fact,
rock and metal bands tend to have deeper and more relatable lyrics than some(not all)songs that
everyone seems to enjoy. An example is that one set of lyrics in a black veil brides song called never
give in is Never give in, Never back down. When your life seems lost, fight against all odds.
Compared to Kanye West s song I am a God where he sings I just talked to Jesus, He said what s up

That misconception was caused when someone had mistaken death metal or deathcore for a metal or
rock song. Rock and metal songs almost never talk about death but when they do they are telling their
listeners that suicide is never the answer and that instead of hurting yourself listen to their music.
Rock and metal has actually reduced suicide rates by 89% When people hurt you over and over, think
of them as sandpaper. They may scratch and hurt you now but in the end you end up polished and they
end up useless. Andy stands up against bullying as do most bands which helps assist them in the
feeling that they belong and can recuperate to make it better in the end. These bands reassure the pain

Understanding Hate Crime Statutes And Building Towards A...
The topic of hate crime is so controversial because there can be different perspectives on the whole
issue, which can eventually cause a massive huge debate on the entire matter. In Ben Gillis article
called Understanding Hate Crime Statutes and Building Towards a Better System in Texas, the author
separates his points in a way that can give the reader a better way of understanding the Hate Crime
laws and the effects of it. Gillis s way of dissecting the article is extremely effective due to the fact
that not only he explains what exactly a hate crime is in its basic form but he also explains hate crime
in its entirety, and he also shows how some states adapt to the whole issue. People may ask in what
way does it make it in a sense illegal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now any one can take a jab at what they think a hate crime is but in the article Understanding Hate
Crime Statutes and Building Towards a Better System in Texas the author supports us with his
definition of a what is a hate crime a hate crime, at its basic level is an attack upon the person or
property of an individual motivated by hatred of a characteristic of that person, such as race, religion,
gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity (Gillis 199). Now that the definition gives us clarity on what
exactly labeled onto what exactly is considered a hate crime. For example, did you know that if
someone vandalizes a synagogue and they write something offensive to the Followers of that
particular religion that will be considered a hate crime because of the person is motivated by hatred
towards the Followers (Gillis 199). You may have your own perspective on a particular group but if
you so happen to put your hands on the person to harm them because of your belief it becomes a hate
crime. In its basic form of what is a hate crime Gillis uses the definition so that the reader aware hate
crime criteria. Let us take another article for example, In opening of Jesse Larner s article Hate
Crime/Thought Crime he alluded to a situation where two Caucasian men decided to go and attack
two African American with the intent to do some serious harm to them. There were no knowledge as
to what was motivated them to do so. One thing for sure according to Larner, Sean Riley Caught up to
one of the victims and remorselessly told her I m going to kill you, you black bitch . Without a doubt it
is extremely obvious that hatred of a specific race was the driving force behind the gruesome actions
posed by the two men especially Mr. Sean Riley. There s no way that the 1st amendment of the United
States correlate with the criminal acts that

What Is The Literary Criticism Of The Devil And Tom Walker
Luis Chavez
English IIIA
31 May 2017
Literary Analysis: The Devil and Tom Walker
The Devil and Tom Walker is a short story written by Washington Irving. The story is about a legend
of a pirates treasure hidden in a swamp and how a miserly man named Tom Walker finds it on his way
home through a swamp. When Tom is in the swamp a dark tall man, Old Scratch, who Tom recognizes
as the Devil, offers Tom a deal for the treasure. Tom goes home and tells his wife about the deal the
Devil gave him, her greedy made her to take all their valuable possessions and go bargain with the
Devil for the treasure. When she didn t return Tom Walker decided to go look for his wife. When Tom
was looking for her, he found her apron, liver, and her heart tied up to a tree. After seeing this Tom
decided to make the deal with the Devil. The Devil tells Tom that he must do services to the devil for
the treasure. He first tells Tom to become a slaver trader; however Tom refuses to become one. Finally
the Devil tells Tom to become a corrupted money loaner, which he agrees to, so he moves to Boston
and becomes a moneylender. While at Boston Tom regrets doing the deal with the Devil and tries
going to zealous church in a hope to redeem his soul for what has he done; however it was too late for
Tom Walker. One afternoon while Tom s victims were begging him for a delay, Tom lost his patience
and his pity and yelled The Devil take me... if I have made a farthing! (Irving, The Devil and Tom
Walker). Immediately after this statement Tom hears three knocks on his door and the Devil comes for
Tom and rides away with him on his horse. The next day Tom s house and all his belongings are burnt
down, and Tom is never seen ever again.
In this story we can see many interesting facts about the main character Tom Walker such as his
relations with other characters and his own beliefs. In the story we can see how Tom doesn t accept the
deal with the Devil at first, but when his wife dies in hands of the Devil, Tom Walker now accepts to
do the deal; however he doesn t accept because he feels like he has lost everything but because now
his wife can t take away any part of the treasure and now he will do the things he wants for his own
good and not to please

A Comparison of Two Commencement Speeches Essay
Graduating from school is only one of the essential tools for a young person to have a successful life.
A person endures many long years of schooling, and then the graduation day finally arrives. That
special day is one of the most momentous days in a young student s life. Happiness and sadness are
the two emotions a person will feel on that special day. A student will experience happiness because of
a significant milestone that was completed in the student s life. The sad emotions will arise because of
a terrifying new chapter in the book of life that is about to begin. Both Bradley Whitford and His
Holiness the Dalai Lama give their commencement speeches by using humor to relax the mood of the
crowd, making light of their fame, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Next, both of the speakers incorporate their fame to try and get a meaningful message across to the
young people before going out into the real world. Being famous does not mean that you are a perfect
person without flaws, and fame takes hard work and dedication. Whitford talks about why in the
world, the college would opt instead for a glorified circus clown from a television show (1). By
poking fun at himself and not acting superior, he is letting the audience know that everyone is equal.
Whitford establishes a common ground with the students, and it makes the students feel comfortable
listening to his words and advice. Whitford talks about how he only has two areas of expertise
reproduction and acting (2). That means that all people have an area in their lives where they can be
considered an expert. The Dalai Lama expresses to the students that he will try and speak directly
through broken English (1). Immediately that tells the graduating class that the Dalai Lama is not
perfect, and he has to work hard for his place in society. His English was not perfect, but he essentially
told the students with courage anything is possible. Some people look up to famous people, but both
speakers try and establish themselves as ordinary people trying to find success in their lives.
Incorporating their faults into the speeches lets the graduates know that it takes dedication and hard
work to achieve success. Even imperfect people can have what it takes to find a job that

Digital Media And Video Art And New Media Art
Pop culture and art have always intertwined, as art often reflect the culture and time of that period.
Now in this tech savvy culture of the 21st century, artists are trying to explain this weird new era of
technology seeping into our everyday lives, through video art and screen based media. There is no
doubt that the Internet has transformed our everyday lives, with useful apps, online banking and social
media, the world is not the same as it was 10 years ago. Future generations, wont even remember a
time without the Internet or touch screen devices. This type of new Internet culture opens and changes
the social dynamic and conventions, into a new language. For artists this opens up a new platform to
create, explore and to exhibit their work in a new space. Social media, allows people to connect and to
distribute content from all over the world, making it ever so easy to access anything now. However,
for the art world this raises questions as to who owns or curates content and whether new media art
that has emerged due to advancement of technology is considered fine art?
To understand this new wave of art, we first must define what is new media art is. New media art and
video art have very similar backgrounds and parallels. Video art emerged during the 1960 s, due to the
introduction of portable cameras, which allowed everyday people to create their own content. Similar
to video art, new media art or Internet art, emerged to the easy accesses of technology and the

Analysis Of The Story Edmund The Just
Why the author named a betrayer Edmund the Just ? In the story there is a character named Edumud
who is one of the main character. He is the betrayer at the beginning of the story and he changed at the
end. In my opinion, he does not deserve the name of king of just. In the story, Edmund betrayed his
siblings for some Turkish delight which is giving by the white witch. And he lied to his brothers and
sisters about he have been to Narnia once, the most importantly, after the beavers tell the truth, he still
choose to give information to the white witch. First of all, Edmund betrayed his siblings for Turkish
delights. In the story, the author illustrate a picture that Edmund wants more Turkish delight then he
wants to sell his siblings to the white witch. This means that Edmund is a greedy person and he can
sell his siblings for his own benefits. From here we can know that Edmund has no clear mind about
just . And for me, the name of king of just need a person to be clear for right and wrong, And clearly
Edmund does not fit this. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also shows he is greedy. In the story the author write that Edmund goes to Narnia and he told his
siblings that he does not believe about Narnia. He does these things because he think the white witch

Most importantly, after the beavers tell the truth about Narnia, Edmund still chooses the side of the
white witch. and he went to witch s house to sell whereabouts of his siblings . In the book the author
wrote about the situation that the beavers have to move fast in order to avoid the army of the witch.
This means in Edmund s heart, Turkish delight is more important then his sisters and brothers. If he is

Poverty Reflection
For my civic or political participation, I volunteered with CPS s GIV day for a poverty simulation.
This is a half a day on the Friday of orientation week is available to first year s students. The students
are able to learn about civic issues like poverty and how Gettysburg College works with the issue and
community. As a member of Gettysburg College, I have volunteered with CPS in many capacities and
have done the poverty simulation as a first year. I also choose this engagement because I have
volunteered or participated in it every year except when I was abroad. This opportunity also allowed
me to complete five of my required hours for my sorority and service fraternity. At the end, GIV day I
an amazing way to get involved on campus, and be reminds about key issues that affect the
community and world.
First year students will come to the College Union Buildings Ballroom on the Friday of Orientation
with little to no idea what they are going to experience for half of the day. They will be assigned a
discussion table, a community group number, and a poverty simulation table number. The day is spit
up in half, where for the first half of the students will go to the community site and the other will go
through the poverty simulation. After both are done, the group will switch.
The students in the poverty simulation are divided into tables, which becomes families, and their goal
is to survive the four weeks. Surviving includes going to work, if they have a job, buying food,

Analyzing The Poem Blackberries
The poem Blackberries is a deep and well thought out story of a man s time in slavery. As you read the
poem, there are obvious meanings the reader will pick up on right away, while there are also much
deeper meaning to many of his words. The title suggests that blackberries play a significant role in the
deeper meaning of the poem. When analyzing the text, it is easy to see the surface meaning saying that
the author is simply picking the blackberries from the field. After a deeper evaluation, it is clear that
he is referencing the hardships of his time as a slave. In the word blackberry, the root black can be
used to show that he views the times are harsh or dark. Black is often used to show either sadness or
nervousness, which can both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He could have chosen any other object to write about, but he chose blackberries because it has a deep
meaning that makes the reader truly think about what he or she is reading. After the reader is able to
understand his true intentions behind the poem, they are able to genuinely reflect. When he says,
Although I could smell old lime covered history, at ten I d still hold out my hands berries fell into
them. Eating from one and filling a half gallon with the other, I ate the mythology dreamt of pies
cobbler, almost. , he is saying that as a child he had a rough time. Again the deeper meaning of
blackberries is extremely prevalent because the darkness that is described by blackberries is shown
when he imagines eating pie and cobbler because he was not permitted to consume delectable
goods. In the middle of the poem, the author writes, The mud frogs in rich blackness, hid from
daylight. to describe the life he lived. He being the black mud frog, hides during the day. During slave
times he could not show his real self being because he would be prosecuted by the owners for not
doing his job. Just like the frog, he makes his true appearance at night time. Slaves were given strict
rules to follow and if they were not abided by they had a chance of being

Pig Taphonomic Bodies
A comparison of decomposition patterns in human bodies versus pig bodies and the reliability of pig
taphonomic facilities.
Taphonomy is described as the study of the stages of decomposition that lead to fossilization and it
originates from a subsection of Forensic Anthropology. All over the world there are various
taphonomic facilities, dedicated to the study of decay in both humans and animals, most notably pigs.
These facilities are founded to help Scientists gain an understanding of how human decomposition
progresses in various simulated conditions that are comparable to the conditions found at different
crime scenes. The information gained through this research is vital in enabling Pathologists and
Forensic Anthropologists to make advances in determining the time of death of recovered bodies. This
essay will cover the similarities between human and pig decomposition and consider whether pig
taphonomic facilities are a valid source of data to be used in the place of human taphonomic facilities.
There are six functioning human taphonomic facilities, known more commonly as body farms . In the
US, the first one was launched in 1981 in Knoxville, Tennessee by Dr William M. Bass. This facility

humans, the most frequently used being pigs, see Figure 2. There are also issues with the potential

  • 2. Allegorizations of the Active and Contemplative Lives in... Allegorizations of the Active and Contemplative Lives in Philo, Origen, Augustine, and Gregory This paper examines the allegorical interpretations given to several Scriptural pairs as they relate to the idea of the active and contemplative lives in Philo, Origen, Augustine, and Gregory. As will be shown, Augustine combines elements found in the two previous writers to form his allegory of the two wives of Jacob as representative of the active and contemplative lives. In Philo, most of the essential elements of later Christian thought on the active and contemplative lives are already present. The superiority of the contemplative life is given at the beginning of his treatise on it: I have discussed the Essenes, who persistently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the former is mortal, the latter immortal, and indeed all the things that are precious to the senses are inferior in perfection to beauty of soul, though they are many and it but one (Sob. 12). Elsewhere Leah is effortless, perfected virtue, while Rachel is active, combative virtue fighting against the temptations of the sensory world: Thus one of the lawful wives is a movement, sound, healthy, and peaceful, and to express her history Moses names her Leah or smooth . The other is like a whetstone. Her name is Rachel, and on that whetstone the mind which loves effort and exercise sharpens its edge. Her name means vision of profanation , not because her way of seeing is profane, but on the contrary, because she judges the visible world of sense to be not holy but profane, compared with the pure and undefiled nature of the invisible world of the mind. (Congr. 25) Later in the same passage, Philo identifies Leah with the reasoning and Rachel with the unreasoning faculties of the soul: For since our soul is twofold, with one part reasoning and the other unreasoning, each has its own virtue or excellence, the reasoning Leah, the unreasoning Rachel. The virtue we call Rachel, acting through the senses and the other parts of our unreasoning nature, trains us to despise all that should be held of little account (Congr. 26 27). Since Philo consistently takes Leah as representing the superior or perfected virtue that should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Peer Pressure In Shooting An Elephant By George Orwell Most people believe that others have authority and control over their own actions. However, contrary to belief, authority controls people s actions. Peer pressure can have an effect on the decisions people make. In this short story, the policeman (the protagonist) is hated by the majority of people in the city of Moulmein. He is hated because he is secretly on the Burmese people s side instead of the British. Along with conflict of the British and Burmese people, an elephant escapes and causes chaos throughout the city. It is killing people and destroying buildings. The policeman decides to step in and help, but he is faced with the peer pressure of the crowd to kill an elephant that he has no intention in killing. The protagonist is faced with lying to other people and regret for his actions. In, Shooting an Elephant George Orwell explains how the policeman struggles between the decisions of shooting an elephant to please the authoritarian crowd that can treat him better and accept him. When the policeman decides to help the people of Moulmein, in lower Burma, he lets them believe his gun is going to be used to shoot the elephant, because of the presser the crowd puts on him. The protagonist struggles throughout life due to the fact that most people despise him. The text states that, I was hated by large numbers of people the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me, (17). The people have the authority over the hatred that is directed towards the protagonist. They control if he is accepted or outcasted. The policeman was looking for a way not to be hated, so he decides to help with chaos that the elephant has created. He grabs his gun and then is confronted with a crowd that normally would have no interest in him. For example, They had seen the rifle and were all shouting excitedly that I was going to shoot the elephant, (19). The magical rifle in his hands makes him seem worth paying attention to. This is because the policeman can shoot the elephant and give the people what they want. The protagonist was not intending to shoot the elephant so, he did not tell the crowd that he was going to use the rifle for protection. This may be because, he was looking for a ... The characters met in college and after dropping out they decided to move in together and continued to act as if they are still in college, such as doing pranks, binge drinking and throwing parties at their house. From a functionalist perspective, their harmonious relationship that share the same norms would be an example of social cohesion. Opportunities in renewable energy in tourism Our initial assessment for The Birchwood Hotel down town St. Petersburg focused on examining key areas for sustainable building practices consistent with Green Key guidelines. The areas assessed were corporate environmental management, housekeeping, conference and meeting spaces, food and beverage, engineering and maintenance. • 8. What Is Erikson s Theory Of Spiritual Formation SPIRITUAL FORMATION THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN BY SOMMER BARNES LIBERTY UNIVERSITY ONLINE Abstract In this research paper, I will try to illustrate my hypothesis of spiritual formation throughout the lifespan by using my interpretation of a collection of theories. The theories I will refer to include Piaget s Cognitive Development Theory, Erikson s Psychosocial Theory, and Kohlberg s Development of Moral Reasoning Theory. In Piaget s Theory of Cognitive Development, he develops a theory of cognitive development that occurs in stages from persons under two years of age through age 14. Piaget s theory relates to the cognitive development of a human person. In Erik Erickson s Theory of Psychosocial Development, Erikson describes a theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... * * Erik Erickson s theory uses distinct critical crises that occur in one s life that require an ah hah moment which leads to maturity. It is with this model I will now illustrate another perspective on spiritual formation through the life cycle. Erikson puts a clear emphasis on society s role in the development of n individual. Erikson advises that crises are never completely resolved and can re emerge later in life, if left unresolve. I think that throughout ones spiritual journey we all have different things that we question, learn, discover and each of these changes in thinking all come from a moment that you decided that is your belief spiritually. Modeling Erikson s stages of psychosocial development, the first stage is basic trust vs. mistrust. A spiritual leader, a church family, a version of your bible; these things are all things that you rely on to get to know your higher power. These things should align in most basic beliefs but when they contradict one another, a seeker of truth must ask himself What do I believe? In the next stage of development, autonomy vs. shame are a crisis that occur when the thinking becomes strong and confident when the spiritual journey is welcoming, joyful and environmentally sound. • 10. Similarities Between Gilgamesh And Genesis There is a lot of evidence to prove and explain how the Israelite people might have known or heard some Babylonian myths. This evidence is shown through similarities in the Genesis creation myths and many Babylonian myths. As an example, there are many similarities shown throughout the Gilgamesh story that relates to the Noah story in Genesis. Some similarities include the heroes character, the order to build a boat, the number of animals, the means of the flood, and the action of sacrificing after the flood. These are only a few of the many similarities interpreted in these stories. The first similarity is that the character of the heroes in both the Gilgamesh story as well as the Genesis/Noah story. In both stories, the heroes character is righteous. For example, in Noah s Arc, it states that a righteous man (Genesis 6:9) was directed to build an ark to save a limited and select group of people and all species of animals. Noah received these orders directly from God. On the other hand, Utnapishtim received his order from a dream. The next similarity is the order to build a boat. In the Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim is clearly instructed to build a boat and leave all wealth behind. O man of Shuruppak, son of Ubartutu: Tear down the house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek living beings! (Gilgamesh 23 25). In comparison at the beginning of the Noah flood story, Noah is also instructed to build a boat or an arc for the flood. • 11. Paris Opera Ballet Research Paper A Brief History of the Paris Opera Ballet It is during the 16th century that the French started ascertaining themselves using the art of ballet. The early ballet dancing was mainly done by dignified dancers who used to entertain the royalty in the main hall where other spectators would watch through the sides of the galleries. The ballet dancing was majorly designed for the entertainment of the aristocracy and the high and rich people in Paris. In the year 1661 Louis XIV founded the Academie Royale de Danse which is presently known as the Paris Opera Ballet (Fisher, 2003, p. 146). • 13. Poetry Of Sappho And Catullus The Ancient poetry of Sappho and Catullus has drawn many comparisons since their origins. In particular, Catullus s poem 51 is a direct adaptation of Sappho s 31. This symmetricality of the two poems allows for perfect comparison to highlight the ways in which the styles of the poets differ or resemble the other. While both Sappho and Catullus write of love, uncontrollable desire, and the overwhelming affect it has on them, Catullus brings a certain ego and self centeredness to his poem, in turn changing the entire mood of the poem. In both 31 and 51, the poets describe the overwhelming sensation of love and lust for a lover. Both Sappho and Catullus manage to capture their affection and desire for their love, as well as the toll that this lust takes on their psyche but in doing so shed very different light on the process. Sappho s poem s depth and faith in love create a positive tone to the poem, while Catullus s ego and fear tinge his poem with sadness and negativity. Sappho is able to portray this overpowering response as something thrilling and exciting. She takes the nervous energy associated with attraction and with the love of another, and shows that it is worthwhile. The positivity that she is able to weave through her poem while at the same time portraying the nervousness at the beginning of attraction paints a realistic picture of love. In the finale line of her poem, Sappho states, all is to be dared, illustrating how the love of another, for Sappho, is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. The Influence Of Family Sitcoms In The 1970 s The family sitcom has always been a form of entertainment that has brought people together, and has played a pivotal role in American society. Family values often change over time to reflect the issues being faced by each family member generationally. Media and entertainment are often affected by the social and political issues of their time. Many of these issues, and the way that these issues have shaped American values, have often influenced the content of television sitcoms. Although family sitcoms often reflect the values of real American families, in the 1970s, many television families had very few flaws, as opposed to the real families of the 1970s. Most my time spent there I interacted with a majority of the kids through basketball and competitive activities like billiards, ping pong and talking sports. While observing relationships and interactions between staff and youth that attend the community center I noticed the important role that sport and education played in the life of the children. Using my sociological imagination, I would like to explore the role of sport and the interactions and behaviors that takes place during competitive situations, also the role of education and the kids perception on going to college and using sport and education as a way of succeeding and escaping the concentrated poverty of the Buffalo communities. Using the lived experience that I encountered and knowledge acquired in the past, I will try to piece together a connection and express how the macro level expectations of a community to prosper influences the self esteem, behaviors and attitudes among social groups at the micro level here in the city of Buffalo and at Asarese Matters community center. Named after the Latin word cuneus or wedge shaped , cuneiform was recorded on clay tablets with pointed reed sticks. Archaeologists have located many of these tablets at various archaeological sites in modern day Iraq. Only highly educated Sumerian scribes could actually read and write cuneiform, creating social disparities between the educated rich and the laboring poor. Other early forms of writing, such as Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Persian languages, were based on the principles of cuneiform. This early language provided the roots for other written languages all around the world (Nardo 81 84). The Dynamic Character In Carver s Cathedral By Raymond Carver In the short story Cathedral by Raymond Carver, the narrator is a dynamic character because of the way his thoughts adjust throughout the entirety of the story. The beginning of the story shows the narrator only being able to see physical things with his eyes. By the end, the narrator sees a different perspective through his imagination. Robert, the blind man that visits the narrator and his wife, brings out the imagination from within the narrator. The narrator is a dynamic character because he changes his judgment of Robert from a more prejudice view to a more acceptable one. The beginning of the story presents the narrator s wife working for a blind man one summer by reading, stuff to him, case studies, reports, that sort of thing (Carver, 34). She eventually extends an invitation for the blind man, Robert, to stay at their house after Robert s wife had passed away. The narrator was not too happy about having a stranger stay in his home by stating, I wasn t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed (Carver, 34). The narrator seems very timid about someone he had never met stay at his house who can see purely nothing. Moral emotions and intuition come first and directly cause moral judgment (Shweder Haidt, 1993). Researchers use personal moral dilemmas in order to test the association between moral emotions and moral judgment. Personal moral dilemmas and judgments concern the appropriateness of personal moral violations (Greene et al., 2004). The footbridge dilemma is an example of a personal dilemma (Thomson, 1986). A trolley is racing down a track towards five workmen on the track who will be killed if nothing is done to the trolley. You and a large stranger are standing in between the trolley and the five workmen. The only way to save the five people is to push the stranger next to you onto the track to stop the oncoming trolley but he will die in the process. Most people would not push the stranger onto the track (Greene et al., 2001). Not pushing the stranger is a deontological response (do not kill innocents), whereas pushing the stranger is a utilitarian response (greatest good for greatest number). In Choe and Min s study (2011), it was concluded that disgust propensity had a negative correlation to utilitarian judgment, while trait anger had correlated positively to utilitarian judgment.
