So we deleted the track from the session and the we unanimously decided it was
more advantageous to record the vocals and the guitar separately. Upon starting to
record the guitar , we decided that her guitar sounded far too bright by just
recording it with the small diaphragm condenser. We tried it with just my AT4040
but it was still giving us unwanted results I suggested we try a stereo mic recording
technique. We took both large diaphragm condenser microphones, a Blue Baby
Bottle and an Audio Technica 4040 and created an XY mic technique by stacking
the Blue mic on top of the AT4040 having their capsules at a forty five degree angle
from each other because in order to record the warmer sound of the opening of the
guitar resonating but also be able to hear the strings clearly on the neck of the
guitar. Both microphones have cardioid polar patterns. Which means they only
record whats in a bell shape in front of the capsule. With the XY pick up pattern
these two imaginary polar patterns overlap each other, and by having them the
same distance away form the guitar you don t have to worry about phase
cancellation. We gave it the stereo effect by forcing a full pan left for the Baby
Bottle and a full pan right for the AT4040. It gave it a more wholesome sound.
