This talk, originally given at WellRailed, dives in to what timing attacks are, some examples, and how to defend against them.
A timing attack is when an attacker can figure out stuff they shouldn’t by asking questions and measuring how long it takes for you to respond.

The Message Map is a visual aid. It allows you to prepare and to organize answers to the questions you are most likely to hear from the news media and from the public during a crisis. It is based on research that looked into how people process information when they are under stress.
Bad things happen; however, many organizations have not prepared a crisis communications plan.
How hard is it to prepare a custom crisis communications plan? What goes into a crisis communications plan? What is the difference between a crisis communications plan and an emergency action plan? What do you need to be ready for?
Answering these questions is easier now than during a crisis. This presentation outlines key things you should do to prepare for all types of potential crises and provides a simple action plan towards completing a preliminary crisis communications plan.

Emergency Management in the age of social convergencePatrice Cloutier
Conference on social media use in emergency management given at the Social Media in Government Conference on Oct. 3, 2011 for the Conference Board of Canada.
When an emergency or disaster occurs, leaders (in any organization) seek to quickly put out the "fire" with whatever resources they have at their disposal. There are hundreds of strategies, mnemonics, best practices, and training courses available that seek to instruct us on the best ways to respond to a crisis, but few of them address the single most important element of crisis communications success: preparedness. When crisis communicators do not adequately prepare and take advantage of data and information to understand their audiences, it is akin to trying to extinguish a fire with gasoline.
This presentation outlines the core elements to proactive crisis communications and identify key situational and environmental analyses needed to properly inform strategies, messaging, and resources needed to manage communications during a disaster or crisis situation in the digital age.
Crisis Communications Planning in the Social Media Age - On-Demand WebinarCNW Group
Dealing with a crisis is never easy, but it’s always more manageable when there’s a plan in place. Sometimes, however, it can be difficult to get everyone on a team to agree on a single crisis communication plan. The first step to implementing a crisis plan is to sell it to the rest of the team.
During an emergency, it is imperative that those within your organization know how to communicate effectively. This includes both internal and external communications. Join Agility Recovery as we share the steps and best practices for developing your emergency communication strategy.

Disaster Response Strategic Communications Brief - Gobi Wolf 2016Richard Packer
In 2016 I was selected by U.S. Army Pacific to be the senior U.S. professional communicator participant and lecturer during disaster response exercise Gobi Wolf 2016 held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. These are the slides I used to brief participants from the U.S., Mongolia, Japan and Nepal on the difference between Strategic Communications and a communications strategy/plan. I also briefed them on how professional communicators may employ each to effect post-disaster chaos and attain desired responses from various audiences through targeted messaging. The format was kept intentionally mundane to simplify the translation process. Coverage of the exercise can be viewed at https://mn.usembassy.gov/gobi-wolf-2016-tests-humanitarian-assistance-disaster-relief-capabilities-mongolia/
Conquering Tough Challenges for More Effective Emergency NotificationEverbridge, Inc.
In addition to new legal and regulatory mandates, there is an emerging expectation of the right to be informed and notified of critical incidents. Demonstrating emergency notification capabilities is no longer an optional activity, but one for which we are being held increasingly accountable. Despite new technologies, best practices, and lessons learned from highly publicized crisis response successes and failures, challenges abound. Distinguished crisis communication expert Dr. Robert C. Chandler discusses communication challenges and opportunities during emergencies and how to master the fine art of sending the right message to the right people when disaster strikes.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

Here’s a brief overview of what we’ll cover today …
Don’t hesitate to interrupt me !
Two perspective: from our audiences and from our own.
Everyone armed with a phone/camera
Twitter used extensively during the Mumbai crisis … 80 messages from witnesses every 5 seconds ! + blogs from hostages !
Pix and tweets seconds and minutes after Sunrise propane explosion/
People in their kitchen as fire approaches acting as “news gatherers” …
A communications response to a crisis must be:
immediate … occupy the public space … because of social media
being out there with relevant, accurate information within minutes will go a long way to establish your voice as one of authority … people will then look for you !

Proven record … lots of scientific evidence and research behind it.
Used by many large government organizations involved in emergency response/management.
Based on differences in how our brains process information in routine situations and during a crisis or stressful times.
Let me explain …
Let me explain …
Can we afford to wait hours before we talk to the media or our audiences?
Or wait hours for approval of a news release?
Brains turn mushy … diminished ability to process and retain info
Why should we continue to do things in the normal way … when our message won’t be heard ?
That’s a critical piece …
Whole way to structure our messages.
Media clips: about 9 seconds
North American: 3 words/second

If it works in a crisis situation and is easy to process … why not use the same process for communicating for special events … such as the G8?
Normally we write for about grade 8 level … papers, usually between grade 6 (sun) and grade 8 (star/globe) … academic paper: much higher …
During crisis: write for grade 2 or 3 to ensure right comprehension
No jargon, no technical terms
