What is Structure?
Structure is something that is built or constructed
and designed to sustain load.
Ex. Bridge or Building
What is Structural Analysis?
A detailed evaluation intended to assure that, the
deformations will be sufficiently below allowable values
that structural failure will not occur.

Geometrically Unstable: If reaction elements are
concurrent or parallel, even there are three or more
reaction elements, they are geometrically unstable.
When a structure is geometrically unstable it becomes indeterminate
So, stability of a structure is determined not only by the no. of reaction
elements but also their arrangement.

  • 5. What is Structure? Structure is something that is built or constructed and designed to sustain load. Ex. Bridge or Building
  • 6. What is Structural Analysis? A detailed evaluation intended to assure that, the deformations will be sufficiently below allowable values that structural failure will not occur.
  • 8. Common Structural Form Beam: Column: Frame: Truss: Plate: Shell: Composite Structures: Primarily subjected to bending Primarily subjected to axial compression Combination of Beam & Column Only subjected to axial forces Composed of planer flat or sheet like elements. Ex-Slab If the sheet like elements are curved rather than line elements. Ex-Dome Truss + Bridge

  • 11. Stability and Determinacy Statically determinate DOI = 0 Unstable Equilibrium Statically determinate DOI = -1 Unstable Equilibrium Unstable Equilibrium: Stable under specific types of loading but unstable under general types of loading
  • 12. Stability and Determinacy Statically indeterminate DOI = 0 Geometrically Unstable Statically indeterminate DOI = 0 Geometrically Unstable Geometrically Unstable: If reaction elements are concurrent or parallel, even there are three or more reaction elements, they are geometrically unstable. When a structure is geometrically unstable it becomes indeterminate So, stability of a structure is determined not only by the no. of reaction elements but also their arrangement.
