This document provides instructions for cataloging technical drawings. It explains that information should be taken from the drawing itself, its container, accompanying materials, and other sources. It describes the areas to include in a catalog record such as the edition, publication details, physical description including dimensions and materials, and notes on details like scale.

Information for the catalogue record is taken
from the following sources in this order:
1. The item itself. If there is more than one
title on the item, preference should be
given to information in the title block;
2. Container;
3. Accompanying material;
4. Other sources.

3. Edition area
(MARC field 250)
List the statement from a drawing which indicates
a particular edition. Examples of such phrases
are “tender drawing,” “contract drawing,” “as built
drawing.”
Publication, distribution, etc., area
( MARC field 260)
Most drawings are produced by the firm or
individual responsible for their creation. While
the firm or individual may sell the drawings in
some instances, they do not constitute a
publisher/distributor.
Date. List date of the latest revision.

4. Physical description area (MARC
field 300)
•Extent of item. List the number of technical
drawings using a specific term, such as structural
sketch, mechanical drawing. In cataloguing a set,
list the component parts in the following order:
architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical,
specialized drawings.
•Other physical details. List the method of
reproduction or the material of the drawing,
whichever term or phrase indicates whether a
drawing can be reproduced. For example, the
terms “mylar,” “tracing paper,” and white linen”
indicate reproducible drawings,” while
“whiteprints,” “blueprints,” and “blue linen” are not
reproduced easily.

5. •Dimensions. List height x width of the drawing
measured from the inside border. If the
drawing is folded, list these dimensions also.
Note Area (MARC field 5XX)
List the scale in the terms used on the
drawing(s). If the scales in a set vary, use the
term “scales vary” or list the range of scales.
List date of original drawing if different
from the date in the publication/distribution,
etc., area
