What is Listening?
Listening is an ability to listen to others, It could influence
person’s ability to fully and accurately appreciate the
message others are trying to communicate.
Why is it Important to learn the skill
of “Listening”
People who can’t listen well can’t relate,
Listening becomes important when it comes
to interpersonal skill. The ability to listen,
relate, and to fully understand what the other
person wish to communicate
It also Involves interpreting what has been
heard, and searching for the full and accurate
understanding of the meaning of one’s
message.

It involves listening for facts, ideas and themes that may
be of future use.
Comprehension listening

Listening is the kind of listening we engage in when
trying to assess the merits of another’s argument,
especially where the argument is intended to persuade.
Evaluative listening

Involves us in attending to and understanding the
thoughts, beliefs and feelings of the speaker, and in
communicating this understanding to the speaker.
Emphatic listening

It’s the kind of listening we engage in for pleasure.

Factors influencing our ability to listen effectively

Environment
Who the speaker is can affect how the message
is interpreted. Speech rate can also affect
listening. Emotionality can be an important
barrier to effective listening.
Background knowledge. The amount of detail,
Significance and order of presentation.
Premature formulation of response. Motivation
can influence how well we will attend to what
the speaker has to say. Physical condition is
another factor that can influence how well we
attend. Linguistic aptitude.
The environment is a variable which intervenes
between the speaker and the listener in a way that
can influence the quality of the message which the
listener receives. Auditory noise. Other noise.

verbal and non-verbal messages.
How to develop the skill of Active Listening?
Help speakers ‘tell their stories’ to the
best of their ability;
Keep our attention focused on the
speaker’s message;
Help us give appropriate weight to what
the speaker says;
Assist us in organizing the information
we receive so that we can make
Sense of even complex or badly
structured messages;
Minimize the problems of personal bias.

physically and psychologically
which involves receiving and
understanding the verbal and non-
verbal messages transmitted by
speakers
which involves listeners
understanding messages from within
the speakers’ frames of reference and
communicating this to them
Probing
Which involves encouraging and
prompting speakers to talk about
themselves and to define their
concern in more concrete and
specific terms.
Listening Skill
Listening skills will be discussed in this chapter under four
headings. The first is preparation, and the following three
are those labelled by Bolton as attending, following and
reflecting.
Bolton ( 1986 )
Personal skills
The kind of preparation we can
engage in involves:
Kind of Preparation
 Arranging important listening tasks for a time
when we are least likely to be stressed or
fatigued, or eating a light meal and avoiding
alcohol immediately prior to an important
meeting.
 Increasing receptivity by making a conscious
effort to temporarily put aside preoccupying
concerns, such as a recent row with a boss or
the need to book a holiday flight as quickly as
possible.
 Arranging an environment which contains as
few distractions as possible, thereby
encouraging all parties to concentrate on
communicating.
 Reviewing background material, such as
notes and reports, or issues to be discussed.
Preparation
Egan offers the mnemonic SOLER as an aid to
remembering ways in which we can project a sense of presence.

of your

the
speaker.

Maintain

contact.

Relaxed
DEVELOPING ATTENDING SKILLS
The first step involves
observing what others
do, and thinking about
what they could do
differently to listen more
effectively.
The second step involves
using these observation
skills to monitor and
assess how you listen
and to identify what you
could do differently to
improve your listening
skills.
The third step involves
experimenting with
new behaviours, taking
action to improve the
way you listen and
monitoring the effect
this has.
A three-step process can help you
develop many of the listening skills
referred to in this chapter.
Listening Skill
Following
Which include keeping the focus of
attention on what speakers have to say
and encouraging them to tell their story
of listening and can gently seek out more
information to help promote a better
understanding of the speaker’s message
by using door openers, minimal prompts,
accents, statements, questions, attentive
silences and a number of special
concentration techniques.
Important
DOOR OPENERS
One
A description of the other person’s body language,
Two
An invitation to talk or continue talking,
Four
Attending – engaging in the attending behaviours
already discussed,especially eye contact and a
positive involvement that demonstrates the
listener’s interest in and concern for the other
person.
Three
Silence – not rushing the other person but
giving them time to decide.
Careful attention to non-verbal clues can often signal
when somebody is pre occupied or worried and may want
to talk.
Effective response,
is when the listener
restates the feeling
and/or content of
what the speaker
has communicated
and does so in a
way that
demonstrates
understanding and
acceptance.
Summary
Which provide us with the opportunity to
check out our understanding and
communicate this to speakers and to help
speakers clarify their own thoughts.

  • 5. Type of Listening by Hargie ( 1994 ) It involves listening for facts, ideas and themes that may be of future use. Comprehension listening 01 Listening is the kind of listening we engage in when trying to assess the merits of another’s argument, especially where the argument is intended to persuade. Evaluative listening 02 Involves us in attending to and understanding the thoughts, beliefs and feelings of the speaker, and in communicating this understanding to the speaker. Emphatic listening 03 It’s the kind of listening we engage in for pleasure. Appreciative listening 04
  • 6. Factors influencing our ability to listen effectively Speaker Message Listener Environment Who the speaker is can affect how the message is interpreted. Speech rate can also affect listening. Emotionality can be an important barrier to effective listening. Background knowledge. The amount of detail, Significance and order of presentation. Premature formulation of response. Motivation can influence how well we will attend to what the speaker has to say. Physical condition is another factor that can influence how well we attend. Linguistic aptitude. The environment is a variable which intervenes between the speaker and the listener in a way that can influence the quality of the message which the listener receives. Auditory noise. Other noise.   • 7. Active Listening it involves the search for a full and accurate understanding of the meaning of another’s verbal and non-verbal messages. How to develop the skill of Active Listening? Help speakers ‘tell their stories’ to the best of their ability; Keep our attention focused on the speaker’s message; Help us give appropriate weight to what the speaker says; Assist us in organizing the information we receive so that we can make Sense of even complex or badly structured messages; Minimize the problems of personal bias.

Attending Empathy Listening which refers to the way listeners orient themselves to speakers, both physically and psychologically which involves receiving and understanding the verbal and non- verbal messages transmitted by speakers which involves listeners understanding messages from within the speakers’ frames of reference and communicating this to them Probing Which involves encouraging and prompting speakers to talk about themselves and to define their concern in more concrete and specific terms.

The kind of preparation we can engage in involves: Kind of Preparation  Arranging important listening tasks for a time when we are least likely to be stressed or fatigued, or eating a light meal and avoiding alcohol immediately prior to an important meeting.  Increasing receptivity by making a conscious effort to temporarily put aside preoccupying concerns, such as a recent row with a boss or the need to book a holiday flight as quickly as possible.  Arranging an environment which contains as few distractions as possible, thereby encouraging all parties to concentrate on communicating.  Reviewing background material, such as notes and reports, or issues to be discussed.   • 11. Egan offers the mnemonic SOLER as an aid to remembering ways in which we can project a sense of presence. S Face the speaker Squarely. O Adopt an Open posture. L Lean the upper part of your body towards the speaker. E Maintain good Eye contact. R Try to be relatively Relaxed
  • 12. DEVELOPING ATTENDING SKILLS The first step involves observing what others do, and thinking about what they could do differently to listen more effectively. The second step involves using these observation skills to monitor and assess how you listen and to identify what you could do differently to improve your listening skills. The third step involves experimenting with new behaviours, taking action to improve the way you listen and monitoring the effect this has. A three-step process can help you develop many of the listening skills referred to in this chapter.

Listening Skill Following Which include keeping the focus of attention on what speakers have to say and encouraging them to tell their story of listening and can gently seek out more information to help promote a better understanding of the speaker’s message by using door openers, minimal prompts, accents, statements, questions, attentive silences and a number of special concentration techniques. DOOR OPENERS One A description of the other person’s body language, Two An invitation to talk or continue talking, Four Attending – engaging in the attending behaviours already discussed,especially eye contact and a positive involvement that demonstrates the listener’s interest in and concern for the other person. Three Silence – not rushing the other person but giving them time to decide. Careful attention to non-verbal clues can often signal when somebody is pre occupied or worried and may want to talk.
  • 15. Effective response, is when the listener restates the feeling and/or content of what the speaker has communicated and does so in a way that demonstrates understanding and acceptance.
