The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela as a Reflection of the Mexican Revolution
In 1910, the first social upheaval of the 20th century was unleashed in Mexico. Known as the
Mexican Revolution, its historical importance and impact inspired an abundance of internationally
renowned South American authors. Mariano Azuela is one of these, whose novel, The Underdogs
is often described as a classic of modern Hispanic literature. Having served as a doctor under
Pancho Villa, a revolutionary leader of the era, Azuela s experience in the Revolution provides The
Underdogs with incomparable authenticity of the political and social tendencies of the era between
1910 and 1920. The Underdogs recounts the living conditions of the Mexican peasants, the ... Show

This is largely due to the fact that Diaz gave away the country s wealth to buy the loyalty of
some, by gifts of haciendas (large estates), concessions or cash. Under his leadership, the gap
between the rich and the poor grew undoubtedly larger due to his disregard of democratic
principles and the common folk, and his acute determination to keep his dictatorship by any
means possible. One of the most renowned opposition leaders of Diaz at the time was the
European educated Francisco Madero. Madero led a series of strikes in resistance to Diaz across
the country and eventually ran against him in the election for presidency in 1911. Although
Madero had a significant number of votes, Diaz had him imprisoned because he felt the people of
Mexico were not ready for democracy, and feared the loss of his own presidency. Madero was
not released until after the election so that votes could be tabulated in favour of Diaz. When
released from prison, Madero continued to fight against his former adversary. Madero led the first
phase of the armed revolution which resulted in Diaz s defeat and to his own presidency reign until
1913. It was during this time that many of the folk heroes of the Revolution emerged, including
Francisco Pancho Villa of the North, and Emiliano Zapata of the South. In 1913 Madero was
assassinated by A Mexican general by the name of Victoriano Huerta. Victoriano and his federal
army was defeated in a coalition of armies led by Alvara Obregon, who took

Example Of Multiculturalism In Counseling
Multiculturalism
The counseling profession it s self has progressed tremendously over the last century, with the
creation of ethical standards and concerns for multiculturalism. Before 1962, multiculturalism was
not identified as a concern; professional counselors could provide or deny services due to any
diversity. Counselors were stuck in stereotypical thinking and didn t take concern for other s
personal identifications. Wren was the first of many to bring the topic of multiculturalism to the
awareness of professionals. Issues and concerns continued to be identified over the years, causing
changes in the way professionals handled cultural diverse issues. In 1992, Multicultural
competencies and standards were published to assist professionals in working with people of
difference. Multiculturalism also is written in the ACA code of Ethics, taking into account
differences in language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, physical abilities, race,
culture, and ethnicity. Even aft the century of modifications of the counseling profession, there
continues to be new issues and concerns that will need to be addressed to continue improving the
lives of our society.
The main issues to remember when it comes to multicultural counseling is that everyone should be
treated as equal, no matter the differences in language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual
orientation, physical abilities or appearance, race, culture, and ethnicity. For a professional
counselor, it is

Themes Of Kipling
Orwell and the Underlying Themes of Kipling In an assessment of Rudyard Kipling s work,
George Orwell claims Kipling is is a jingo imperialist, he is morally insensitive and aesthetically
disgusting. Orwell assesses Kipling s work as being outdated from a nineteenth century
imperialist outlook that is no longer applicable to modern society. He disclosed Kipling s lack of
knowledge on economic forces giving reason behind Kipling s stories not syncing with the
natural history that took place after. He exposes Kipling s weaknesses as only being able to
write about things that have already happened, confining Kipling as only a writer of his time.
Orwell compares Kipling to a shameful pleasure, like the taste for cheap sweets that some
people secretly carry into middle life. Orwell is not completely critical of Kipling. For example,
he believes Kipling appeals to audiences by communicating as the voice of the common man. He
writes from the heart and appeals to audiences, not financially, but emotionally. Orwell also finds
Kipling s realistic vision of war to be impressive, since he had not physically been in battle.
Furthermore, Orwell defends Kipling against the false allegations of being a Fascist. Orwell
claims He [Kipling] was further from being one than the most humane or the most progressive
person is able to be nowadays. Though it is evident that Kipling s imperialist viewpoint heavily
influences his writing, Orwell s interpretations of The White Seal and

Media And Its Effect On Society
Since you know this world is a pure chaos in many forms in any name you can reference to. We,
Society, are the most distinctive cultural patterns and organized group of persons connected
together for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes you
can name of. There is many problems are happening nowadays, which it seems worsen than in
the past generations. Most of problem causing I am seeing in this generation is Media itself are
playing a significant role in our society today. It is all around us, from the shows we watch on
television, the music we listen to on the radio, and to the books and magazines we read each day.
Television, Camera, Computers, and other large to small things are the goal to interfere to
numberless of different goals, strategies, and other existence by trying to set for the range from
entertaining to educating which end up in confusion big time. What I see is what media nowadays
are showing are mostly women, race oppression, sexism, and perfection. As you see what s
happening to women s equality are in the lack system from the past to today. To the point where it
is media causing a negative problem about women is where feminine beauty are presented in
almost all forms of popular media, barraging women with images that expose what is considered to
be the ideal body. So, that means it is called Feminism. There is another name is Feminist, which a

Bonhoeffer s Life Together And Zizioulas The Church
Comparing the views of Bonhoeffer s Life Together and Zizioulas The Church
Bonhoeffer and Zizioulas offer interesting perspectives for conceptualizing the Christian theology
regarding the atonement. Indeed, one of the outstanding elements of Christianity practices, which
sets them apart from other religions, is atonement. In this case, atonement can be defined as the
process of sin reparation or expiation. There are four models of atonement. These include Christus
Victor, Satisfaction, Exemplar and Penal Substitution. A look at the differences between these two
theologians reveals a clear difference regarding their perspectives towards atonement, in which
Bonhoeffer tends to orient himself towards the model of Christus Victor, while... Show more

It affirms that God attributed the sins and guilt of humankind to Jesus, Who in place of man,
received that punishment that humanity would have otherwise deserved. Jesus actions signified
the payment of the sins of humankind, which settled both the righteousness and wrath of God so
that sinners could be forgiven without God Himself compromising His holy standard. In essence,
according to the penal substitution theory of the reformers, Jesus died in place of man, in the
process accounting for the sins of man and bearing them. The act of Jesus taking the sins of man
indicates that Jesus carried the cross of every believer, setting him free and safe from all the penal
demands of God s law. In this context, the holiness of God and the righteousness of His law are
accounted for by the substitution. Notably, in modern theology, the penal aspect has been a
stumbling block despite being regarded as one of the dominant atonement in the bible. According
to the model, Jesus paid man s ransom on his crucifixion. However, this view only works because
Christ was paying man s penalty. Therefore, Christians should be inspired by the self sacrifice acts
of Jesus on the cross. In addition, Jesus death and resurrection implied significant victories over
death, hell, and sin in our union with him and God. Lastly, God accomplished his mission to
reconcile the world with Him despite various trespasses by

Ophelia is piece of art that was painted by Sir John Everett Millais. It was painted in the Tate
Britain and completed in 1852 (Lewis par. 2). The painting shows a fictional actor from

out their work directly from nature. Their role model was John Ruskin who inspired artists to go to
nature and work wholeheartedly. John Everett Millais and his colleagues used pure color and

The Growing Problem of Food Intolerance
Food intolerance has been a growing problem. Symptoms can vary anywhere from nausea, skin
rashes, anemia, depressions to nutritional deficiencies as well as thyroid disease, kidney failure and
cancer. This research paper explores information regarding food intolerance looking specifically at
the role of gluten on the immune systemand how an elimination diet plays a role.
Gluten is a protein found in most cereal grains and is consumed in greater quantities than any other
form of protein. It has been estimated that 6% to 7% of the U.S population have been diagnosed to
be gluten sensitive, bringing that number to almost 20 million people. Intolerance to gluten relates
to gastrointestinal problems which include diarrhea, bloating and might result in consumption.
Other body systems that are affected are the central and peripheral nervous systems, the
integumentary system and the endocrine system. Berstad et al at Oslo s Lovisenberg Diaconale
Hospital studied 84 participants who have been referred to gastroenterologists for digestive
problems which the patients think are caused by sensitivities to certain kinds of foods. The results
of the study showed that all by one participant was qualified for irritable bowel syndrome. In
addition, 85% had symptoms indicating chronic fatigue syndrome and 74% showed symptoms of
fibromyalgia. In children, the neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD, autism spectrum

family member, or if they themselves have a serious health condition (Vikesland, 2006). In order
to be considered an eligible employee, you must work for a company that employs at least fifty
people, have worked there for a year and have worked a minimum of 1,250 hours in that year. The

The eligible employees are allowed to have up to twelve weeks of leave, but it is unpaid.
However, if the employee has sick time, or vacation leave they have not used then that pay could
be applied to their FMLA time off. So, if employee A has stored paid sick, or vacation time, then
the manager is required to pay him for the time that he has been gone. If employee A did not have
any paid leave to take, then it is considered normal FMLA leave an the manager is not required to
pay the employee for any time while gone. So, looking at the situation there has not been a
violation of the FMLA.

his/her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment, including hiring,

Because of companies wanting employees that were going to have longevity from their starting

to protect the rights of the older generation. The ADEA protects those rights; it forces employers

REVITAHIP Study Essay
Introduction and aim
Hip fractures result in a number of health related problems and even mortality among older people.
Hypovitaminosis D is one of the prevalent issues related to hip fracture. The REVITAHIP study is a
trial with multisite and randomized control investigating the effect of an initial loading dose
vitamin D on recovery consequences after hip fracture surgery. The aim of the paper is to compare
the REVITAHIP study with other studies using vitamin D to improve the rehabilitation after hip
fracture surgery based on the assessed baseline characteristics of participants, with a focus on
hypovitaminosis D.
Methods
Demographic and clinical data of the involved participants were collected before the trial. The
trial randomly allocated the participants who were aged over 65, from public hospitals in
Australia and had a surgery demand within 7 days after hip fracture into two groups. The two
groups were provided by a loading dose of vitamin D3 or placebo, followed by receiving oral
calcium vitamin D combination tablets and regular recovery pathway. The hypothesis about the
relations between baseline vitamin D level and other variables was examined by Person chi square

As we have seen the external environment has positive (opportunities) and negative (threats)
possibilities. A company should take advantage whenever it is possible of its opportunities coming
from its current weaknesses and strengths. An opportunity is usually completely or marginally out
of the range of the company s influence, meaning for instance the development of a new way of
making business for the firm, like the development of the e business a few years ago.
While the threats are a problem in the environment which can then get worse and become
hazardous for a firm s growth, such as new competition for example.
As we have seen previously the SWOT analysis can be consider as a picture of the company, which
can show some movements but will not provide the next pictures, or even a lead to know which
way things are moving. As an example we can use the case of IBM which was a leader in the IT
industry. A SWOT analysis conduct by the Yankee Group showed that IBM was immovable from
its leader position, but since that time the company has been overtaken by firms like Microsoft or
Intel. This shows one of the lack of this analysis which did not lead the firm into strategic decisions
when a different situation appeared (money loosing situation). And compared to its competitors
IBM reacted less adequately which conducted the firm to loose market shares, because the analysis
lean on unmoving factors more than on how the company

Families and Households attained via interviews and surveys, to re examine the relationship
between equality and labour. Greenstein (1996) found that egalitarian women are less likely to do

Challenging But Rewarding World Of A Hotel Manager
Challenging yet Rewarding World of a Hotel Manager
The hotel industry is one of the most important segments of the Hospitality in large. Working in
hotels allows its employees to have fun, emerge in new cultures on a daily basis and be able to
advance further in the career. The lodging industry is one of the most rewarding, yet most
challenging fields to work for. Confucius once said Choose a job you love, and you will never have
to work a day in your life . Some people will choose this career path in need of money, but those
who choose it out of passion will understand the power in the saying above. The lodging industry is
a more than $155 billion industry that includes approximately 53,000 properties with almost
5,000,000 guestrooms (Walker, 2015, p. 76). This field is continuously growing due to the trend
of using management contracts and franchising, since it allows brands to expand rapidly without
using their own financial resources (Walker, 2015, p. 76). In today s technology driven society it
is more important to deliver and over exceed guest expectations than ever. The influence of social
media has increased drastically, which can either help or hurt the business due positive or negative
word of mouth. Working in a hotel takes a lot of courage, hard work and perseverance, but it also
takes a lot of passion, love and hospitality spirit to overcome difficult situations. The purpose of

Religious Allegory In Life Of Pi By Yann Martel
Life of Pi written by Yann Martel uses many literary devices to present the different themes in the
novel; and allegory, along with its many examples, is prevalent in this novel as the number one
mechanism to demonstrate the character and theme growth. Through religious allegory,
symbolism, and imagery, Yann Martel
uses Piand his voice to make readers question the real
meaning behind Life of Pi.
Religious allegory is a large topic in this novel. Yann Martel parallels many characters in this
novel with Religion and Religious figures. When he meets Orange Juice for the first time, he is
overwhelmed with happiness. He even compares her to the Virgin Mary upon first seeing her. Pi
exclaims, Oh blessed Great Mother, Pondicherry fertility goddess, provider of milk and love,
wondrous arm spread of comfort, terror of ticks, picker up of crying ones, are you to witness
this tragedy too? (Martel, 139) The orangutan is not only a metaphor for a religious figure, but is
also a metaphor for his own mother. At the end of the novel, Pi retells the story using people
instead of animals, because the rescuers will not believe a story this fantastical using animals. His
mother is seen through Orange Juice s feelings and maternal actions; it was almost like she takes
on the feelings and experiences (and sufferings) of the passengers on the boat. The religious
allegory with the raft arises when the tiger surfaces onto the same level of the boat as Pi; where he
had been hiding. With these

Richard Wilbur s Boy At The Window
War has changed many people s lives, including Richard Wilbur. Richard is a poet who was in
the U.S. army in World War II. According to the Poetry Foundation, the war influenced his
poetry. He was born in 1912 in New York City and won the Pulitzer Prize two times and won
many other awards, such as the Wallace Stevens award. One poem Richard Wilbur wrote was
Boy at the Window . This poem is about a boy looking out a window at a snowman, but the
young boy does not quite understand why the snowman has to suffer out in the cold. The theme
of the poem is as one grows older they will start to understand the world more. This relates to
Richard s experience in the war. Richard was young when he went into the war and he had many
fears that he could not understand before going into the war. In the poem, Boy at the Window , by
Richard Wilbur, he shows a central idea of misunderstanding which shows the theme of as one
grows older they will start to understand the world more by the context, literary devices, and mood
in the poem.
In the poem, Boy at the Window , the first way that the theme of as one grows older they will start
to understand the world more is shown in the context of the poem. An example of how the context
of the poem helped to show is by the quote in line 1, Seeing the snowman standing all alone
(Wilbur). This quote is talking about a little boy looking out the window at the snowman. It helps to
explain the theme because he is young and does not understand

John Locke s The Second Treatise Of Government
Classical liberalism values the rights and freedoms of the individual, as well as the ability to have
limited government. John Locke s The Second Treatise of Government embraces fundamental parts
of the ideology, including self interest, consent of the governed, as well as equality between
citizens. With these principles being demonstrated, it allows Locke to be seen as the father of
Classical Liberalism. Self interest is one of the most important factors of classical liberalism, and
within the Second Treatise we are shown this through Locke s views on private property. The
purpose of conforming to a society as opposed to staying in the peaceful state of nature, is to make
laws... regulating and preserving property, employing the force of the community in the execution
of such laws, and in the defense of the commonwealth from foreign injury, and all this for the
public good. (pg 2) Conforming to a society ensures the protection... Show more content on

Locke pursues the idea that we are born with the choice to adhere to a government, and also the
extent to which the government can interfere. Since power is only legitimate with consent, the
laws are the same. People cannot be bound by any laws but such as are enacted by those whom
they have chosen and authorized to make laws for them. (pg 66) Absolute monarchs are not
appointed by the citizens, but instead inherit their position. Therefore, monarchies should have no
control over the citizens. Also, laws are not to abolish or restrain, but to preserve and enlarge
freedom... for liberty is to be free from restraint and violence of others; which cannot be where
there is no law. (pg 25) By allowing a government, it protects the individual and allows government
interference only when absolutely necessary. Liberalism has to do with remaining as free as
possible, so there is limited government to preserve

importantly natural resources like coal, steel, gold, silver and lumber. Coal was a valuable resource
needed to power factories and transportation like the transcontinental railroad that spanned across
the US. After the transcontinental railroad was built in 1869, more coal was found in the west that
could be mined and then transported to the factories in the east. This led to the increase in material
production and made manufacturing easier and cheaper. However, when coal is burned it gives off
pollution so an increase in coal usage also impacted the environment. Additionally, working
conditions in the factories back then were unimaginable. Workers were overworked and around
dangerous machines at a young age.
After the industrial revolution production of materials increased. According to Document 3, steel
production in 1865 was 3,100,000 tons and in 1900 production increased to 9,000,000 tons, over
triple the previous amount. During this time period the Bessemer Steel Process helped to increase
steel production by using less coal and making steel cheaper. This is significant because during the
industrial revolution steel was used to build the railroads, buildings and plows. As a result of
having more steel, more railroads and buildings can be built for cheaper, improving transportation

The End of Rhino Poaching414 Everyday more and more rhinos die from poaching. Did you

Everyday we lose more and more rhinos for their horns. In 2012, 668 rhinos died for their horns.
Then again, in 2013 by half the year 350 rhinos had already been lost to poachers. Once, a rhino

How will drones catch the poachers? The drones are hand launched so there is no need for a big
runway. Also, the drones are only 12 pounds. Drones also have a six mile range camera. The drones
computer calculates a hot spot for poaching and watches it from the sky. Next, if the drone sees a
poacher then it sends an alert to notify the game wardens. When the game wardens see the alert
they rush down to the poaching sight and try to catch the poachers before they attack. The drones
film a video of the scene including the weather, if there was a sun or moon, when it happened and
where. The drones film this to show the trends/patterns of poachers. Drone technology can be very
different. For example, they can have different features. Thomas Smith and team at the University
of Maryland have tested out drones to stop poachers. In the last six months Smith s team had
arrested a lot of poachers with not one single gunshot. Their drones have infrared cameras and the
camera sends live video to the command center on the ground. Air Shepherd is combining with the

Louis Farrakhan Nation Of Islam
The Nation of Islam is a subsection of the Islamic religion which aims to enlighten and engage
Black Americans, in hopes of freeing them from the oppression of their white counterparts.
Though the NOI make efforts to uplift Black people and teach respect for all people, it is often
contemplated whether or not the organization has pure intentions at its core. This can be due to the
fact that there have been leaders of the organization that teach ideologies that are those of hate,
which goes against what the NOI teaches as a whole. One such leader is Louis Farrakhan, the chief
spokesman of the Nation of Islam. An article revolving around Farrakhan s recent activities were

Muslims do not accept the group as being apart of their religion. I believed that if I went directly
to the NOI website, then I would find out more information on this topic. On the website, I found
a mission statement of sorts, which reads The Nation of Islam is one of the wealthiest
organizations in black America. The main purpose of the Nation of Islam is to teach the
downtrodden and defenseless Black people a thorough Knowledge of God and of themselves, and
to put them on the road to Self Independence with a superior culture and higher civilization than
they had previously experienced which, of course, explains the main purpose of the organization,
but does not explain how it is connected to Islam (NOI). If anything, the website pointed out all of
the ways in which the two religions were different, which can leave one fairly confused, as I

The Classical Film Grease Essay
Watch the classical film Grease and one can understand how relationships function in Western
Society. The film tells a story of a boy (Danny) and a girl (Sandy) who falls in love. Through a
series of misunderstandings they break up, but still somehow care for each other. Through
ballads such as Summer Night s that are still popular today, the film shows how differently
males and females view relationships. Films like Grease are like a mirror, reflecting societal
values and how it socializes its members. It makes it clear that in relationships, males are
socialized to view relationships as mostly a physical, sexual endeavor, while females view it as a
perpetual bond a deeper connection between the two individuals within a relationship.... Show more

A Careful Preponderance of Goodman s Some Moral Minima
Relativism is the philosophical viewpoint that there are no actions that are innately immoral or
moral, and that the morality of actions must be measured against the individual circumstances, from
a multitude of perspectives that include the actor as well as the myriad consequences (and victims,
potentially) of such an action. After reading Lenn Goodman s Some moralminima , it becomes
fairly apparent that Goodman is far from a relativist. After a lengthy, meandering introduction in
which the author spans a variety of topics and nothing too much in particular, he posits the notion
that there are certain acts which are in and of themselves morally wrong. Specifically, the author
proposes the notion that there are four categories for such acts including genocide, terrorism,
slavery, and female genital cutting and rape. A careful preponderance of Goodman s article and the
challenges the author presents to relativism indicates that such moral requirements are actually
valid.
At the heart of the issue that Goodman presents in this article is the unifying theme that runs
concurrent through all four stratifications of immoral acts: they all, essentially, present instances in
which someone is enforcing his or her will on another, to the contrary of the volition of that other
party. Such a practice appears to be morally incorrect, as a number of deontologists (most notably
Immanuel Kant) would vociferously argue. A consideration of the four types of actions delineated
by Goodman

Napoleon And Stalin Animal Farm Essay
Animal Farm is a political allegory concerning power about the Russian Revolution. At the
beginning of Animal Farm , power was used to achieve great things. It brought all animals of
Manor Farm together but after an initial influence of power, it began to destroy the community that
they had worked together to form. This can be seen by the character development of Napoleon who
is thought to potray Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Unionduring the mid 1920 s. They were
both leaders that abused their power and used ruthless methods to rule over the community. For
instance, Napoleon and Stalin both abused their given power, one of the similarities between them

In the novella, Animal Farm , by George Orwell, Orwell states, Napoleon had accepted, through
Whymper, a contract for four hundred eggs a week.... Their method was to fly up the rafters and
there lay their eggs, which smashed to pieces on the floor.... He [Napoleon] ordered the hens
rations to be stopped and decreed that any animal giving so much as a grain of corn to a hen
should be punished by death (pg.68). This means that Napoleon killed all the chickens because
they didn t want to give them anymore eggs. Napoleon never consulted with the hens to give up
their products. This is to symbolise what Stalin did in the past when he wanted to take the lands
away from profiting farmers because private property is against the government and socialism.
Both of them tried to control the food production and would not mind killing to get the production
process smoother. Furthermore, both dictators ruled over their subjects with an iron hand. Orwell
states, ...but it was cruel work, and the animals could not feel so hopeful about it as they had felt
before. They were always cold and usually hungry as well (pg 66). This means that Napoleon
would make the animals work hard no matter how the harsh conditions were. In relation to this,
Stalin made loyal proletariat workers work hard until they got too tired and incompetent. Overall,
both dictators governed their people

foundational fantasy novels, without a doubt, allegory is omnipresent. Furthermore, this literary

Creationist Argument Against Creationism
As seen from the infographic, Creationism meets absolutely none of the requirements to be
considered a science; for instance, Creationism has no physical evidence, is not repeatable, and has
no backing from any other branch of science. In this specific instance, evolution is the comparative
to Creationism. Unlike its counterpart, evolutioncan be repeatedly tested because it is still
happening to this day while the beliefs of Creationismseem to have occurred only once.
Additionally, if Creationism was to have any evidence, it would probably be the Bible, but not even
that has scientific backing. Along with this Creationism cannot be backed by any branch of science,
due to the fact that it does not follow the scientific method. Due to this, Creationism cannot be
considered a science and in turn cannot be taught in place of a science curriculum. Despite this,
Creationists still press for some form of their religious beliefs to be taught in the public school
system. Fundamentalist Creationists do not stop at just asking for Creationism to be taught in
public schools, as mentioned before, sometimes they turn to extremes. First, it is beneficial to
understand the basis on which Creationists attempt to discredit science. One of the most common
misconceptions from Creationism is that it is a suitable scientific alternative to the evolutionary
theory. This is simply not true, as evident from the aforementioned infographic. Using this as the

playwright and actress Carol Brown, disrupting the conventional assumptions about classic theatre
while injecting the familiar with spontaneity and vitality, bridge the divide between the plays of

Colin Ferguson Analysis
Cultural variability is evident in history, cross culturally, and between social groups within in today
s cultures. There are many things that impact cultural variability of norms such as race, gender,
social class, age, subcultural and religious affiliation (Velasquez, Andre, Shanks Meyers, 1987).
December 7, 1993, Colin Ferguson began to randomly execute the passengers on a New York
commuter train (Who is Colin Ferguson, 2017). After killing six passengers and injuring nineteen
others, he was finally subdued by three of the other passengers (Who is Colin Ferguson, 2017).
Colin Ferguson was born January 14, 1959 in Kingston, Jamaica. His father Von Herman was
the managing director for Hercules Agencies, a large pharmaceutical company. Mr. Herman was
highly regarded and recognized as a prominent businessman in Jamaica (Montaldo, 2017).
Ferguson had four brothers and afforded the privileges that wealth offers in an extreme poverty
area. He graduated from Calabar High School in 1969 with a grade average that was ranked in
the top third of his class (Montaldo, 2017). In 1978 his father was killed in a car crash and a
short time later his mother died from cancer. He would then suffer the loss of the family fortune.
At 23 years old Ferguson left Kingston, Jamaica and moved to the U.S. on a Visitor s Visa
(Montaldo, 2017). Ferguson arrived in America in 1978 into a time when there were mostly white
families holding privilege and wealth and leaving a cultural that was quite the opposite from
American. Ferguson also came from a prominent Jamaican family with wealth and privilege that he
would no longer have.
The only jobs Ferguson could get in America were low paying and menial. He blamed racist
Americans for this problem (Montaldo, 2017). He got married to an American citizen who was
also of Jamaican descent. They soon moved to Long Island but Ferguson continued to be frustrated
with reports of loss of temper, outrage, and racial bigotry toward white people who he felt stood in
his way (Montaldo, 2017). In Jamaica he was born into one of the top families in Kingston;
Government and top military members attended his father s funeral. In America he was not given
this honor which appeared to

Importance of the Eunuchs in Elizabeth Inchbald’s The...
Importance of the Eunuchs in Elizabeth Inchbald s The Mogul Tale
The eunuch is an integral part of the 18th century play The Mogul Tale, by Elizabeth Inchbald. He
serves a historical role by being the Mogul s advisor, watchman, and, most importantly, harem
guard. Eunuchs are generally defined as castrated males and are thus excellent choices to guard the
Mogul s women no fear of the guard taking the ladies for himself. Inchbald reinforces these noble
positions by showing the eunuch as the Mogul s right hand man . But with the passing of time
these traditional roles have died along with the people who embraced them. Eunuchs now exist in
an India that has all but forgotten their position as protectors. They are now part ... Show more

They will also sell their bodies for shelter. They will stay with men they call their husbands and
clean their homes for a space to sleep on the floor10. The older traditions of performing
ceremonious blessings are dying and more and more hijras are turning to prostitution as a means of
survival putting them at a high risk for AIDS11.
There are several roads that lead to a boy becoming a hijra. One way into the hijra life is to be
kidnapped. Organized gangs kidnap young boys from impoverished areas of India, or the boys
are sold by starving parents for a low sum of money. The boys are castrated and put out onto the
streets as beggars for up to forty years to prey on religious sentiments and collective psyche of
the Hindu community 12. These hijras are given protection and shelter for a percentage of their
earnings . There is still exist a risk today for young boys in these Mafia style activies13. Because
of the castration process, there is no way for the boys to escape and reintegrate back into
mainstream society. They are made permanent outcast.
Those with gender identities and orientations outside of the mainstream are welcomed by the hijra
communities. In Indian society boys must exhibit their heterosexuality by puberty if not, they are
labeled as hijras and put out of the family. There exist no place in Indian society for effeminate
homosexuals of transsexuals. Hijra

Essay about Hedda Gabler
Hedda from the play, Hedda Gabler by Ibsen is greatly affected due to her background. Hedda s
father being a general led her to control issues later on in life. She felt weak and needed control
over the people in her life.
Hedda was born to a great, wonderful, highly regarded and respected general, General Gabler.
Because she was his daughter people would show great respect and loyalty towards her. She was
used to people listening and obeying her; she just loved having power over others. When Hedda
and her husband, George Tesman got back from their honeymoon George s aunt, MissTesman was
telling the maid how particular Hedda is after growing up as General Gablers Daughter, Well of

Even on their honeymoon George spent most of the time gathering information for a book he
planned to write. George would also go out to parties all the time, for hours at a time and just
leave Hedda at home all by herself. Hedda wanted the praise and power that she got when she was
a child and tried to change George into her father. Although Hedda tried to gain control over her
husband she failed.
Hedda tries to gain superiority over George s aunt, Aunt Julie. Aunt Julie is the person that
raised George. In a conversation George once had with his aunt he said, You, who ve been a
father and mother to me both. When Aunt Julie stopped by to welcome Hedda and George back
from their honeymoon Hedda talked lowly about Aunt Julie s hat which she picked out just to
impress her nephews new wife. When talking about the maid Hedda said, See there! She left her
old hat lying on a chair. Suppose someone came in and saw it. Hedda also refuses to addressed
Aunt Tesman by her sir name and not as if she was family. George once said If only you could
bring yourself to speak to her warmly, by her first name.
No no don t ask me to do that. I told you this once before. I ll try to call her aunt. That should be
enough.
By acting this way Hedda tried to return to the life she knew when she was with her father.
Another person Hedda try s to take control over is Thea. Thea is an old class mate back from high
school who Hedda used to

Gregorio Cortez And High Horse Similarities
There are men in the world that are completely different, but happen to have a few similarities.
Gregorio Cortez and High Horse are two different men but also have little in common. For one,
Cortez is an outlaw and no matter how bad things are, he doesn t stop. On the other hand, High
Horse is a romantic, but doesn t give up because he knows who he loves and is willing to do
whatever he has to for the girl he is going to marry. And he said he loved the girl so much that he
was man enough to do anything Red Deer or anybody else could think up. Cortez and High Horse
have one similarity, which is truly believing in something. The differencebetween their beliefs is
that Cortez believes he is unstoppable. The Major Sheriff shot first, and he

Contributions Of The Vikings, Polynesians, And The...
The Vikings, Polynesians, and the Phoenicians explored vast areas around the world. They were
motivated to trade and conquest areas of the unknown. These groups of people traveled without
any modern technology and they still managed to arrive in hard to reach places around the
globe. Many people wonder what motivated these talented explorers to discover and create what
they did. The Phoenicians traveled to places such as, Spain, Africa, and Scilly Isles. They
explored places that were beyond the traditional safe limits in the Mediterranean and into the
Atlantic. The Phoenicians were driven to trade things for silver in Spain, Africa s wide variety
of gold, and tin from Scilly Isles. These people were also credited with the achievements of many
new nautical inventions. Their life was full of exploring new places, and that benefitted their
people very much. Exploration was the reason for many new advancements in this time. Masters
of the sea, is the name given to the Phoenicians for their ability to push beyond the limits of
traditional exploration. They were able to explore the seas with their ships built out of cedar
wood logs. The Phoenicians were famed in antiquity for their ship building skills, and they were
credited with inventing the keel, the battering ram on the bow, and caulking between planks. (cite

The Iowa State Fair is a big part of the culture of Iowa and has been for centuries. 1854 was the
first year of the Iowa State Fair and ever since then it has been a can not miss date on many
Iowans calendars. Every year the fair is held for ten days in the middle of August. Many
counties in Iowa hold county fairs, but the Iowa State Fair is the biggest fair of them all. People
from all around the state and even throughout the country come here to show off their
accomplishments, listen to live music, camp, and have fun at the Thrill Park. Just last year,
over a million people visited the fair throughout the ten days of activities. Many kids that I go to
school with prepare for this week all year round. They raise and take care of different animals
such as pigs and cows and show them at their local county fair and then if they get selected as
one of the top participants, they get to go on to show their animal at the Iowa State Fair. You can
also go to the state fair for creating art, projects, and photography. They have all the outstanding
artwork of the kids on display for everyone to see. The talent that the kids have is just remarkable.

Cajun Food Research Paper
Cajun American Culinary History
Cajun food comes from the deepest Southern parts of Louisiana and Mississippi. Like the area it
originated from, Cajun flavor is spicy, rich, and really, really good! A lot of people don t know that
the typical Cajun food was developed by extremely poor people. Refugees and farmers used what
they had to feed large families. If you ask a resident of the area, you will find out that Louisiana
Creole originated with the settling of European immigrants around 1690. These folks brought with
them the influences of European traditions including their cuisine.
Most were upper class aristocracy, so Creole today is seen as a classier, fine cuisine while Cajun
is more of a common cuisine. The main difference is that Cajun cuisine uses wild vegetables and

This is still evidenced today in the Creole cooking we enjoy. As a lot of these people were
probably second sons with no hopes of inheriting land or holdings at home in Europe, they arrived
here to search out their fortunes. Many of these immigrants were French. The classic French dish
named Bouillabaisse is a tribute to that heritage.
In reality, Louisiana Creole cuisine is a mixture of several different and varied cultures. Soon after
the immigrants arrived in the area, native Indians introduced the use of local grown vegetables like
corn, ground sassafras and bay leaves. Tomatoes from Central and South America were also
introduced. As these ingredients began to see utilization, the Creole cuisine we know today started
to take shape.
The Creoles that settled in the Louisiana area enjoyed a fairly rich lifestyle. A few years later, the
influx of African slaves brought okra seeds into the culture. Okra was added to some dishes,
especially soups, and since the African word for okra is gumbo , that is what we called the
signature dish of Louisiana Creole

Jon Krakauer
In his work Into The Wild , Jon Krakauer writes about a young man who escaped on an
expedition to invent a new life for himself. However, the reasons why he decides to partake on
such journey raises many questions because Christopher McCandless lives a life of valuable
possessions which his rejection of his economic class to disperse in a cultural background of
nature steers Krakauer decision to report his story. Krakauer believes that a young man with a great
amount of opportunities must have a logical reasons to abandon all the achievements and most
importantly his family to live in the Wilderness. Although, Krakauer intends to portray McCandless
as a genius of his choices and ethical to his ideas, as the book unfolds Krakauer... Show more

McCandless was eager to follow his dreams and achieve what he wants, but in doing so he fails
and became an outcast ignoring the help of others and the philosophy of other former

page 5 as Gallien tries to dissuade him on his hitchhiking scheme I said the hunting wasn t easy
where he was going, that he could go for days without killing any game, when that didn t work I
tried to scare him, Alex didn t seem too worried. Alex negligence to make friends and listen to
others resulted in his death. Alex had his own way and as a result he neglect other ideas, if he
did listen to Gallien and was fully equipped for his hitchhiking, there is a possibility he would
not die. Krakauer s comparison of McCandles to Rosellini, Waterman and McCunn only fails
krakauer intention of portraying McCandless as a man who was different and had reasons to
what he did. Krakauer writes on page 85 There are similarities among Rosellini, Waterman,
McCunn and McCandless, like Rosellini and Waterman McCandless was a seeker and had an
impractical fascination with the harsh side of nature. Krakauer s intention is to gain sympathy for
McCandless and most importantly to not regard to McCandles as an idiot because there are other
believers like him, however this idea only makes him more of an idiot because Alex is aware of

Nipah Virus Research Paper
For the Nipah Virus, fruit bats of the Pteropus genus have been identified as the natural reservoir.
The virus has been isolated in many bodily locations, such as the brain and spinal fluid, and from
environmental prototypes, like bat urine and partially eaten fruit, such as found in cases of
Malaysia. Antibodies of the Nipah virushave been found in the sera of fruit bats, which have been
collected in India, Indonesia, and many others such as Madagascar and Ghana. The presence of
these antibodies indicate that goats, horses, and some cats and dogs have been reported as

Poverty and the American Dream
The American Dream as defined by James Truslow Adams in 1931 is a national ethos of the
United States in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an
upward social mobility achieved through hard work. Truslow states life should be worse and
poorer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement
regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. The idea of the American Dream is rooted in the
United States Declaration of Independencewhich proclaims that all men are created equal and that
they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights including Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness. The American Dream is viewed by many Americans as not... Show more

As he noted in the preface, there was no shortage of such books. What he wanted to contribute was
broad interpretive sensibility that emphasized important historical themes. For Adams, no theme
was more important than what he called that American dream of better, richer, and happier life for
all our of citizens of every rank, which is the greatest contribution we have made to the thought and
welfare of the world. That dream of hope has been present since we became and independent
nation, each generation has seen an uprising of ordinary Americans to save that dream from the
forces which appeared to be overwhelming it.
While Adams may have the coined the phrase of the American Dream, it is apparent that the
notion of the Dream was a prevalent long before the term was engrained in the oral culture of
American society. The roots of the American Dream is evident even in the composition of the
Declaration of Independence. Written in 1776, Cullen suggests that the Declaration of
Independence is directly worded to invoke a spirit of the anything is possible at any moment. He
states: Maybe saying that the Declaration is central in contemporary American life seems odd, since
a few of us have actually read the entire document. And those of us who have can t help but notice
that this manifesto, like so much else about American Revolution, is remote, even tedious. The Key

This is largely due to the fact that Diaz gave away the country s wealth to buy the loyalty of some, by gifts of haciendas (large estates), concessions or cash. Under his leadership, the gap between the rich and the poor grew undoubtedly larger due to his disregard of democratic principles and the common folk, and his acute determination to keep his dictatorship by any means possible. One of the most renowned opposition leaders of Diaz at the time was the European educated Francisco Madero. Madero led a series of strikes in resistance to Diaz across the country and eventually ran against him in the election for presidency in 1911. Although Madero had a significant number of votes, Diaz had him imprisoned because he felt the people of Mexico were not ready for democracy, and feared the loss of his own presidency. Madero was not released until after the election so that votes could be tabulated in favour of Diaz. When released from prison, Madero continued to fight against his former adversary. Madero led the first phase of the armed revolution which resulted in Diaz s defeat and to his own presidency reign until 1913. It was during this time that many of the folk heroes of the Revolution emerged, including Francisco Pancho Villa of the North, and Emiliano Zapata of the South. In 1913 Madero was assassinated by A Mexican general by the name of Victoriano Huerta. Victoriano and his federal army was defeated in a coalition of armies led by Alvara Obregon, who took ... • 4. Example Of Multiculturalism In Counseling Multiculturalism The counseling profession it s self has progressed tremendously over the last century, with the creation of ethical standards and concerns for multiculturalism. Before 1962, multiculturalism was not identified as a concern; professional counselors could provide or deny services due to any diversity. Counselors were stuck in stereotypical thinking and didn t take concern for other s personal identifications. Wren was the first of many to bring the topic of multiculturalism to the awareness of professionals. Issues and concerns continued to be identified over the years, causing changes in the way professionals handled cultural diverse issues. In 1992, Multicultural competencies and standards were published to assist professionals in working with people of difference. Multiculturalism also is written in the ACA code of Ethics, taking into account differences in language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, physical abilities, race, culture, and ethnicity. Even aft the century of modifications of the counseling profession, there continues to be new issues and concerns that will need to be addressed to continue improving the lives of our society. • 6. Themes Of Kipling Orwell and the Underlying Themes of Kipling In an assessment of Rudyard Kipling s work, George Orwell claims Kipling is is a jingo imperialist, he is morally insensitive and aesthetically disgusting. Orwell assesses Kipling s work as being outdated from a nineteenth century imperialist outlook that is no longer applicable to modern society. He disclosed Kipling s lack of knowledge on economic forces giving reason behind Kipling s stories not syncing with the natural history that took place after. He exposes Kipling s weaknesses as only being able to write about things that have already happened, confining Kipling as only a writer of his time. Orwell compares Kipling to a shameful pleasure, like the taste for cheap sweets that some people secretly carry into middle life. Orwell is not completely critical of Kipling. For example, he believes Kipling appeals to audiences by communicating as the voice of the common man. He writes from the heart and appeals to audiences, not financially, but emotionally. Orwell also finds Kipling s realistic vision of war to be impressive, since he had not physically been in battle. Furthermore, Orwell defends Kipling against the false allegations of being a Fascist. Orwell claims He [Kipling] was further from being one than the most humane or the most progressive person is able to be nowadays. Bonhoeffer s Life Together And Zizioulas The Church Comparing the views of Bonhoeffer s Life Together and Zizioulas The Church Bonhoeffer and Zizioulas offer interesting perspectives for conceptualizing the Christian theology regarding the atonement. Indeed, one of the outstanding elements of Christianity practices, which sets them apart from other religions, is atonement. In this case, atonement can be defined as the process of sin reparation or expiation. There are four models of atonement. These include Christus Victor, Satisfaction, Exemplar and Penal Substitution. A look at the differences between these two theologians reveals a clear difference regarding their perspectives towards atonement, in which Bonhoeffer tends to orient himself towards the model of Christus Victor, while... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It affirms that God attributed the sins and guilt of humankind to Jesus, Who in place of man, received that punishment that humanity would have otherwise deserved. Jesus actions signified the payment of the sins of humankind, which settled both the righteousness and wrath of God so that sinners could be forgiven without God Himself compromising His holy standard. In essence, according to the penal substitution theory of the reformers, Jesus died in place of man, in the process accounting for the sins of man and bearing them. The act of Jesus taking the sins of man indicates that Jesus carried the cross of every believer, setting him free and safe from all the penal demands of God s law. In this context, the holiness of God and the righteousness of His law are accounted for by the substitution. Notably, in modern theology, the penal aspect has been a stumbling block despite being regarded as one of the dominant atonement in the bible. According to the model, Jesus paid man s ransom on his crucifixion. However, this view only works because Christ was paying man s penalty. Therefore, Christians should be inspired by the self sacrifice acts of Jesus on the cross. In addition, Jesus death and resurrection implied significant victories over death, hell, and sin in our union with him and God. Under the ADEA, it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because of his/her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment, including hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignments, and training (EEOC, 2008). Because of companies wanting employees that were going to have longevity from their starting point, or wanting to move the younger people up the corporate ladder, something had to be done to protect the rights of the older generation. The ADEA protects those rights; it forces employers to give benefits to employees over forty, it doesn t allow companies to advertise for jobs specifying an age, or age limit, and it does not allow a company to ... Hypovitaminosis D is one of the prevalent issues related to hip fracture. The REVITAHIP study is a trial with multisite and randomized control investigating the effect of an initial loading dose vitamin D on recovery consequences after hip fracture surgery. The aim of the paper is to compare the REVITAHIP study with other studies using vitamin D to improve the rehabilitation after hip fracture surgery based on the assessed baseline characteristics of participants, with a focus on hypovitaminosis D. Methods Demographic and clinical data of the involved participants were collected before the trial. The trial randomly allocated the participants who were aged over 65, from public hospitals in Australia and had a surgery demand within 7 days after hip fracture into two groups. The two groups were provided by a loading dose of vitamin D3 or placebo, followed by receiving oral calcium vitamin D combination tablets and regular recovery pathway. As we have seen the external environment has positive (opportunities) and negative (threats) possibilities. A company should take advantage whenever it is possible of its opportunities coming from its current weaknesses and strengths. An opportunity is usually completely or marginally out of the range of the company s influence, meaning for instance the development of a new way of making business for the firm, like the development of the e business a few years ago. While the threats are a problem in the environment which can then get worse and become hazardous for a firm s growth, such as new competition for example. As we have seen previously the SWOT analysis can be consider as a picture of the company, which can show some movements but will not provide the next pictures, or even a lead to know which way things are moving. As an example we can use the case of IBM which was a leader in the IT industry. A SWOT analysis conduct by the Yankee Group showed that IBM was immovable from its leader position, but since that time the company has been overtaken by firms like Microsoft or Intel. This shows one of the lack of this analysis which did not lead the firm into strategic decisions when a different situation appeared (money loosing situation). And compared to its competitors IBM reacted less adequately which conducted the firm to loose market shares, because the analysis lean on unmoving factors more than on how the company ... • 17. Religious Allegory In Life Of Pi By Yann Martel Life of Pi written by Yann Martel uses many literary devices to present the different themes in the novel; and allegory, along with its many examples, is prevalent in this novel as the number one mechanism to demonstrate the character and theme growth. Through religious allegory, symbolism, and imagery, Yann Martel uses Piand his voice to make readers question the real meaning behind Life of Pi. Religious allegory is a large topic in this novel. Yann Martel parallels many characters in this novel with Religion and Religious figures. When he meets Orange Juice for the first time, he is overwhelmed with happiness. He even compares her to the Virgin Mary upon first seeing her. Pi exclaims, Oh blessed Great Mother, Pondicherry fertility goddess, provider of milk and love, wondrous arm spread of comfort, terror of ticks, picker up of crying ones, are you to witness this tragedy too? (Martel, 139) The orangutan is not only a metaphor for a religious figure, but is also a metaphor for his own mother. At the end of the novel, Pi retells the story using people instead of animals, because the rescuers will not believe a story this fantastical using animals. His mother is seen through Orange Juice s feelings and maternal actions; it was almost like she takes on the feelings and experiences (and sufferings) of the passengers on the boat. The religious allegory with the raft arises when the tiger surfaces onto the same level of the boat as Pi; where he had been hiding. With these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The American Industrial Revolution The American industrial revolution took place from the late 1800s into the 1900s. An industrial revolution is a boom in industry and manufacturing. It requires a workforce, leaders, and most importantly natural resources like coal, steel, gold, silver and lumber. Coal was a valuable resource needed to power factories and transportation like the transcontinental railroad that spanned across the US. After the transcontinental railroad was built in 1869, more coal was found in the west that could be mined and then transported to the factories in the east. This led to the increase in material production and made manufacturing easier and cheaper. However, when coal is burned it gives off pollution so an increase in coal usage also impacted the environment. Additionally, working conditions in the factories back then were unimaginable. Workers were overworked and around dangerous machines at a young age. After the industrial revolution production of materials increased. According to Document 3, steel production in 1865 was 3,100,000 tons and in 1900 production increased to 9,000,000 tons, over triple the previous amount. During this time period the Bessemer Steel Process helped to increase steel production by using less coal and making steel cheaper. This is significant because during the industrial revolution steel was used to build the railroads, buildings and plows. A Careful Preponderance of Goodman s Some Moral Minima Relativism is the philosophical viewpoint that there are no actions that are innately immoral or moral, and that the morality of actions must be measured against the individual circumstances, from a multitude of perspectives that include the actor as well as the myriad consequences (and victims, potentially) of such an action. After reading Lenn Goodman s Some moralminima , it becomes fairly apparent that Goodman is far from a relativist. After a lengthy, meandering introduction in which the author spans a variety of topics and nothing too much in particular, he posits the notion that there are certain acts which are in and of themselves morally wrong. Specifically, the author proposes the notion that there are four categories for such acts including genocide, terrorism, slavery, and female genital cutting and rape. A careful preponderance of Goodman s article and the challenges the author presents to relativism indicates that such moral requirements are actually valid. At the heart of the issue that Goodman presents in this article is the unifying theme that runs concurrent through all four stratifications of immoral acts: they all, essentially, present instances in which someone is enforcing his or her will on another, to the contrary of the volition of that other party. Such a practice appears to be morally incorrect, as a number of deontologists (most notably Immanuel Kant) would vociferously argue. This means that Napoleon killed all the chickens because they didn t want to give them anymore eggs. Napoleon never consulted with the hens to give up their products. This is to symbolise what Stalin did in the past when he wanted to take the lands away from profiting farmers because private property is against the government and socialism. Both of them tried to control the food production and would not mind killing to get the production process smoother. Furthermore, both dictators ruled over their subjects with an iron hand. Lewis Fantasy Literature Novel: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe As we, University of Virginia students, took refuge in Bruce Holsinger s Masterworks of Fantasy Literature class back in August, Holsinger succinctly defined Fantasy Literature as, making reality more real, . Fantasy Literature is famous for its talking animals, magical powers, utopian/dystopian societies, and containing exceptionally imaginative plots. After reading and analyzing several foundational fantasy novels, without a doubt, allegory is omnipresent. Furthermore, this literary aspect can either hinder or liberalize reading. Reading is hindered by interpretation with a preconceived, objective notion. In clearly associating a distinct understanding while reading, ultimately the novel s freedom to draw conclusions is robbed. Furthermore, and unfortunately I must add, Fantasy Literature is often ... Unlike its counterpart, evolutioncan be repeatedly tested because it is still happening to this day while the beliefs of Creationismseem to have occurred only once. Additionally, if Creationism was to have any evidence, it would probably be the Bible, but not even that has scientific backing.
