The brain is located inside the skull and is made up of neurons that communicate via electrical and chemical signals. It is split into two hemispheres and connected to the spinal cord via the brain stem. The brain controls the body's functions and houses thoughts, memories, feelings and emotions. It receives sensory input and sends motor commands via different types of neurons. Major parts include the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem, each with distinct roles in voluntary movement, balance, involuntary functions and sleep regulation.
