Boring
 In machining, boring is the process of enlarging a
hole that has already been drilled (or cast), by means
of a single-point cutting tool (or of a boring head
containing several such tools), for example as in
boring a gun barrel or an engine cylinder.
 Boring is used to achieve greater accuracy of the
diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut a tapered
hole.
 Boring can be viewed as the internal-diameter
counterpart to turning, which cuts external
diameters.
History OF Boring Machine
 The first boring machine reported to have been built
was Henri-Joseph Maus' Mountain Slicer.
Commissioned by the King of Sardinia in 1845 to dig
the Fréjus Rail Tunnel between France and Italy
through the Alps, Maus had it built in 1846 in an
arms factory near Turin.
 The first successful use was on the Oahe Dam in
1952 by James S Robbins.
Types Of Boring
 There are various types of boring. The boring bar
may be supported on both ends (which only works if
the existing hole is a through hole), or it may be
supported at one end. Lineboring (line boring, line-
boring) implies the former. Backboring .

Line Boring
Line boring implies former .line boring machines
support boring diameters from 1.375 to 80 inches
(35 to 2030 mm), with the precision and speed of
stationary machines. Specially designed mounting
brackets, spherical bearings, self-centering setup
cones, and movable rotational drive and feed units
simplify setup and allow the tools to work in spaces
too tight for most line boring machines.
Back Boring Machine
Backboring (back boring, back-boring) is the process
of reaching through an existing hole and then boring
on the "back" side of the workpiece (relative to the
machine headstock).
Boring Machine
 A machine tool designed to machine internal work
such as cylinders, holes in castings, and dies; types
are horizontal, vertical, jig, and single.
Types OF Boring Machines
 The two types of the boring machine, each of which
has several varieties, are the horizontal boring and
drilling machine, and the vertical boring and turning
mill.
Horizontal Boring Machine
 A horizontal boring machine or horizontal boring
mill is a machine tool which bores holes in a
horizontal direction. There are two main types —
Table and Floor. The table type is the most
common and, as it is the most versatile, it is also
known as the universal type.A horizontal boring
machine has its work spindle parallel to the ground
and work table. Typically there are 3 linear axes in
which the tool head and part move.
 Horizontal boring machines are often heavy – duty
industrial machines used for roughing out large
components but there are high-precision models too.
Vertical Boring machines
A vertical boring mill is a machine used to bore holes
in metals, usually iron or steel. They are very similar to
a typical milling machine, where the workpiece is kept
stationary, and milling tools rotate at high speeds.
These tools are very similar to drill bits on a drill press
and come in many different shapes and sizes to
accommodate a variety of applications. A vertical
boring mill, however, primarily uses boring bits to
bore holes in metals vertically. Boring mills are
typically used for drilling holes, or machining the
cylinders of an engine block.
Tunnel Boring machine
 A tunnel boring machine (TBM) also known as a
"mole", is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a
circular cross section through a variety of soil and
rock strata. They can bore through anything from
hard rock to sand. Tunnel diameters can range from
a metre (done with micro-TBMs) to 19.25 metres to
date
Uses Of Boring Machine
 Boring machines are used to mill, drill, bore, cut
threads or face turn using a rotating tool, usually a
cutter, drill, boring rod or milling head. Boring
machines are used to drill closed and open openings
in solid material, boring, reaming, threading, milling
surfaces, etc. Drill bits, reamers, thread cutters,
milling cutters and other tools are used to perform
these operations.

  • 4. Boring  In machining, boring is the process of enlarging a hole that has already been drilled (or cast), by means of a single-point cutting tool (or of a boring head containing several such tools), for example as in boring a gun barrel or an engine cylinder.
  • 5.  Boring is used to achieve greater accuracy of the diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut a tapered hole.  Boring can be viewed as the internal-diameter counterpart to turning, which cuts external diameters.
  • 6. History OF Boring Machine  The first boring machine reported to have been built was Henri-Joseph Maus' Mountain Slicer. Commissioned by the King of Sardinia in 1845 to dig the Fréjus Rail Tunnel between France and Italy through the Alps, Maus had it built in 1846 in an arms factory near Turin.  The first successful use was on the Oahe Dam in 1952 by James S Robbins.
  • 7. Types Of Boring  There are various types of boring. The boring bar may be supported on both ends (which only works if the existing hole is a through hole), or it may be supported at one end.   • 8. Line Boring Line boring implies former .line boring machines support boring diameters from 1.375 to 80 inches (35 to 2030 mm), with the precision and speed of stationary machines. Specially designed mounting brackets, spherical bearings, self-centering setup cones, and movable rotational drive and feed units simplify setup and allow the tools to work in spaces too tight for most line boring machines.
  • 9. Back Boring Machine Backboring (back boring, back-boring) is the process of reaching through an existing hole and then boring on the "back" side of the workpiece (relative to the machine headstock).

  • 12. Types OF Boring Machines  The two types of the boring machine, each of which has several varieties, are the horizontal boring and drilling machine, and the vertical boring and turning mill.

  • 14. Horizontal Boring Machine  A horizontal boring machine or horizontal boring mill is a machine tool which bores holes in a horizontal direction. There are two main types — Table and Floor. The table type is the most common and, as it is the most versatile, it is also known as the universal type.A horizontal boring machine has its work spindle parallel to the ground and work table. Typically there are 3 linear axes in which the tool head and part move.

  • 17. Vertical Boring machines A vertical boring mill is a machine used to bore holes in metals, usually iron or steel. They are very similar to a typical milling machine, where the workpiece is kept stationary, and milling tools rotate at high speeds. These tools are very similar to drill bits on a drill press and come in many different shapes and sizes to accommodate a variety of applications. A vertical boring mill, however, primarily uses boring bits to bore holes in metals vertically. Boring mills are typically used for drilling holes, or machining the cylinders of an engine block.

  • 19. Tunnel Boring machine  A tunnel boring machine (TBM) also known as a "mole", is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of soil and rock strata. They can bore through anything from hard rock to sand. Tunnel diameters can range from a metre (done with micro-TBMs) to 19.25 metres to date
  • 20. Uses Of Boring Machine  Boring machines are used to mill, drill, bore, cut threads or face turn using a rotating tool, usually a cutter, drill, boring rod or milling head. Boring machines are used to drill closed and open openings in solid material, boring, reaming, threading, milling surfaces, etc. Drill bits, reamers, thread cutters, milling cutters and other tools are used to perform these operations.
