4. An Introduction to your BMI and how to calculate it.
By Jenni Storck and Erin Markus
5. The student will:
Know that BMI means Body Mass Index
Demonstrate how to figure out a BMI by
performing a mathematical equasion
Work with a partner to solve a BMI “real-life”
scenario problem
Calculate their own BMI and determine if their
own BMI is in a safe range.
6. BMI means Body Mass Index and is used to
calculate a healthy weight range from
underweight to overweight people. BMI is
often used by doctors, nutritionists, and
fitness professionals to determine the best
diet and exercise program for an individual.
7. Once your BMI has been calculated using a
mathematical formula, you can determine if
your BMI fits in a healthy or unhealthy range
by using the BMI Chart.
8.
9. The Formula that you will be learning today
looks like this:
[W ÷ (H)2] x 703 =
BMI
W= Weight
H=Height
10. Step 1: Square the height of the person (in
inches)
Step 2: Divide the person’s weight (in pounds)
by the squared height
Step 3: Multiply that answer by 703
Step 4: Now that you have the person’s BMI,
you can now look at the chart and find out if
it is a healthy or unhealthy BMI!
** WRITE THE EQUASION DOWN ON YOUR
PAPER BECAUSE YOU WILL BE USING IT TO DO
THE NEXT ACTIVITY!
11. For this activity, you will work with your
partner in your own chat room to solve the
problem on the next page. Once you are
finished solving the problem, we will share
our completed problem on the whiteboard
with the other groups.
12. Sarah is 14 years old and feels she is
overweight. She visited a nutrition counselor
who calculated her Body Mass Index to
determine if she is considered overweight.
Sarah is 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 125
lbs. What BMI did the nutrition counselor
come up with for Sarah? Is this considered
overweight, normal, or underweight on the
chart?
Please post your completed math problem on
the board and your answer to the question.
13. In this activity, you will use your own weight and
height to figure out your own Body Mass Index.
Please answer the following questions:
1. What is my BMI?
2. Is my BMI considered healthy or unhealthy?
3. What can I do to improve my BMI, whether I am
considered underweight or overweight?
Please submit your answer directly to the
instructor using our submission area. This
information will not be shared with the rest of
the class and is to learn about your personal
health. Please contact your instructor if you have
questions!
