Money Activities
Teaching Kindergarteners about money
and money management is an important
part of a Life Skills Unit. When you teach
children about money, you provide
opportunities for them to practice
counting, to work with the terms more
than and less than and to increase their
ability to understand other mathematical
concepts such as fractions and decimals in
later grades.
The value of money must be taught as a
"perception" to Kindergartners. They must
"perceive" the value of each individual
coin. This is really quite simple even though
it works counter intuitive to what we know to
be true. These fun, interactive activities help
the children visualize the coins and think
about the fact that they have value.

Pattern Activities
There are many opportunities throughout
the day for teaching patterns in
kindergarten. Children learn to recognize,
create, copy and extend patterns through
repeated daily activities. Integrating five
minute patterning activities into a daily
schedule is not only fun for the children, but
also helps them to be aware of patterns in
their daily surroundings.
In a Life Skills Unit, patterning can help with
teaching about memorizing of important
facts, such as phone numbers and
directions, or even dressing yourself.
Pattern recognition is very important to
teach at a young age.

K-1 LS1A The human body is made up of various external parts.
K-1 LS1B All plants and animals have various external parts.

Nutrition Activities
Healthy eating habits should be part of a Life Skills Unit for Kindergarteners. They
are at the point where they can control and make smart choices about their
nutritional intake. Once children start kindergarten, life takes on a new routine. A
regular intake of food is needed throughout the day to help keep children active
and able to concentrate while learning. Offer regular meals and snacks, and allow
your child to eat according to appetite without force or arguments.
