History
• A food pyramid or diet pyramid is a triangular diagram
representing the optimal number of servings to be eaten each day
from each of the basic food groups .
• The first pyramid was published in Sweden in 1974. The 1992
pyramid introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) was called the "Food Guide Pyramid" or "Eating Right
Pyramid".
• It was updated in 2005 to "MyPyramid", and then it was replaced
by "MyPlate" in 2011.
Food Guide Pyramid

adequacy and moderation
 Developed using consumer research, to bring
awareness to the new food patterns
 Illustration focused on concepts of variety,
moderation, and proportion

throughout five food groups and in the tip
 Included range for daily amounts of food across
three calorie levels
MyPyramid

updating of Food Guide
Pyramid food patterns for the
2005 Dietary Guidelines for
Americans, including daily
amounts of food at 12 calorie
levels
• Continued “pyramid”
concept, based on consumer
research, but simplified
illustration.
• Added a band for oils and the
concept of physical activity
• Illustration could be used to
describe concepts of variety,
moderation, and proportion

Differences & Similarity between
My Pyramid & My Plate
Conclusion
• As the field of nutrition science is
developing rapidly, new types of dietary
guidelines are preparing continuously.
• USDA have already undertaken working
on dietary guidelines for 2015-2020 &
dietary guidelines for 2020-2025.
• Bangladesh have also published a
dietary guidelines based on food guide
pyramid . Now we have to focus on
building My Plate for Bangladeshi
