3. INTRODUCTION
The Spaniards occupied the Philippines in the 1521. Rajah Sulayman was one of those who fought valiantly
to keep others from taking his post. However, the Spaniards eventually conquered his territory. The cannon,
which is still one of the most powerful weapons in use today, was one of their armaments back then. It was
created by a Filipino who hails from the Philippines' southern islands. In Tagalog, he is known as Blacksmith
or "Panday." Rajah Sulayman then tasked him with the fabrication of armaments in order to retake his
realm. Nonetheless, it was a failure. Meanwhile, Panday Pira moved to Pampanga to start a new life, but
Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, the first governor-general of the Philippines, sent him back to Manila because he
had to forged them cannons. He worked as a cannon manufacturer in the castle of Nuestra Senora de Guia
(Our Lady of Guia), which is now known as " Intramuros ". He eventually died in 1576 at the age of 88.

7. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Biography
Panday Pira (1488-1576)
Many of us don’t know who Panday Pira or what did he do back in 1500s. Teachers rarely teach us
the unfamous heroes that’s why we don’t know who he is. But who really Panday Pira is? Panday
Pira was born from the Southern Islands of the Philippines in year 1488. He grew up in the shade
of colorful houses perched on pillars on a little lake's shallow coast. He was troubled by the
village's peaceful existence. He used to spend a lot of time alone, throwing youngsters into the
lake. He could easily hit rocks with fish and eels trying to get away, and he was a good striker. He
reasoned that if the boulders were lighter, they could travel further.
Legaspi sought out Panday Pira for his useful knowledge after formally conquering Manila in 1571.
However, the cannon worker was nowhere to be located. Panday Pira fled to Bulacan after the
fight of Manila in 1565. He then traveled to Pampanga, where he lived at what is now known as
Apalit. He established a foundry there and created the first plow and plow. Pira made these tools
out of clay.
Panday Pira died at the age of 88 in 1576. Panday Pira's death was a huge blow to the Spaniards.
Panday Pira's replacement was desired by their ancestors in Spain. The Spaniards extolled a
Filipino's greatness.
A street in Tondo Manila has been named after the first Filipino to create a cannon.
9. INDICATORS/IMPACT
IMPORTANCE AND CONTRIBUTION
Panday Pira was regarded as the “First Filipino Cannon-Maker”. According to tradition, Panday Pira trained early villagers
in the metal smith industry as far as Ilocos and Isabela in the north and Batangas in the south of Luzon.
During battle, he invented the lantaka, a miniature cannon that could be spun or manipulated at any angle and
direction. As the Spaniards prepared to capture new areas in the archipelago and throughout Southeast Asia, the
Adelantado Miguel Lopez de Legazpi asked him to make lantakas for galleons and warships.

16. RELEVANCE
OBSERVE
We Filipinos have been taught about our
national heroes since the beginning of time in
countless history lectures. When people are
asked who our most prominent heroes are,
names like Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio
Aguinaldo, Apolinario Mabini, Melchora Aquino,
and Gabriela Silang immediately to mind. But,
behind the colorful, well-known stories shared
by practically all of our national heroes, there
were the unsung heroes, often known as
"forgotten folk," who were also part of the
Philippines' struggle for opportunity during
colonial times. We would not have the
freedom we have today if it weren't for their
commitments, no matter how big or small.
17. RELEVANCE

Despite the fact that Panday Pira died at the
age of 88, he made a significant contribution
to our country, particularly to Spaniards. His
skill in making weapons and cannons were
invaluable in defending our country from
Spanish invaders, as well as Spaniards who
benefited from Panday Pira's abilities.
18. RELEVANCE
INFER
Panday Pira's contribution is quite remarkable,
despite the fact that Filipinos are unaware of it.
His blacksmithing skills aided the Spaniards
and the Philippines considerably. It is unknown
when they began manufacturing cannons or
who introduced the technique of cannon-
making, according to the sources we studied.
Panday Pira, on the other hand, was the maker
of the artillery mentioned by the Spaniards. As
a result, we are convinced that the cannons
employed by the Filipinos and even the
Spaniards were designed by Panday Pira, a
well-known blacksmith. Panday Pira's skill and
intelligence must be recognized, as he is better
renowned for his expertise of forging, such as
the creation of numerous knives such as the
balisong, which is popular in Batangas.
