 The term "polymer" derives from the ancient Greek word polus,
meaning "many, much" and meros , meaning "parts", and refers
to a molecule whose structure is composed of multiple
repeating units.
 The term was coined in 1833 by Jon Jacob Berzelius.
 A polymer is a large molecule (macromolecules) composed of
many repeated subunits, known as monomers. monomers can
be linked together in various ways to give linear, branched and
cross linked polymers etc…….
• First use – catgut suture made from intestine of
sheep
• In 1920 – Hennery ford experiment with the use
of soya bean based plastic.
• In 1980 – concept of synthetic biodegradable
plastic and polymer introduced.
• In 1992 – International meeting was called.
• AS of 2013, 5-10% of the plastic market
focused on biodegradable plastic
• Non-Toxic.
• Non- inflammatory.
• Used for drug delivery.
• They should easily break down.
1. Medicinal :
• Used to carry anti cancer drug.
• Uses a drug delivery system.
• Poly lactic acid( PLA)
2. Tissue Engineering
Such as bone and joint
replacement
1.Take less time to breakdown.
2.Are renewable.
3.Good for environment.
4.Reduce CO2 emission.
5.Easier to recycle.
6.Are not toxic.
• Water Soluble.
• Biodegradable melts at or above 300o C.
• Heavy duty products can not be produced.
 Plant oil.
 Cellulose.
 Corn.
 Potato Starch.
Sugar Cane.
Conclusion :-
Thus I conclude here that we have learned
what is biodegradable plastic and polymer
with its types, advantages, properties and
application.

  • 3.  The term "polymer" derives from the ancient Greek word polus, meaning "many, much" and meros , meaning "parts", and refers to a molecule whose structure is composed of multiple repeating units.  The term was coined in 1833 by Jon Jacob Berzelius.  A polymer is a large molecule (macromolecules) composed of many repeated subunits, known as monomers. monomers can be linked together in various ways to give linear, branched and cross linked polymers etc…….
  • 4. • First use – catgut suture made from intestine of sheep • In 1920 – Hennery ford experiment with the use of soya bean based plastic. • In 1980 – concept of synthetic biodegradable plastic and polymer introduced. • In 1992 – International meeting was called. • AS of 2013, 5-10% of the plastic market focused on biodegradable plastic

  • 6. • Non-Toxic. • Non- inflammatory. • Used for drug delivery. • They should easily break down.
  • 7. 1. Medicinal : • Used to carry anti cancer drug. • Uses a drug delivery system. • Poly lactic acid( PLA)
  • 8. 2. Tissue Engineering Such as bone and joint replacement
  • 9. 1.Take less time to breakdown. 2.Are renewable. 3.Good for environment. 4.Reduce CO2 emission. 5.Easier to recycle. 6.Are not toxic.
  • 10. • Water Soluble. • Biodegradable melts at or above 300o C. • Heavy duty products can not be produced.
  • 11.  Plant oil.  Cellulose.  Corn.  Potato Starch. Sugar Cane.
  • 12. Conclusion :- Thus I conclude here that we have learned what is biodegradable plastic and polymer with its types, advantages, properties and application.
